suitable chairman of the Co-op. That is all from the BBC News at six On

:00:00.3:59:59

BBC Tonight on Luton North, another

:00:00.:00:12.

council makes savings, hundreds of jobs are expected to go. Services

:00:13.:00:20.

are likely to be cut. The desperate search for a quayside man swept away

:00:21.:00:26.

by a river in south`east Asia. A critical report by a government

:00:27.:00:30.

health watchdog leads to suspension of a care home. And how homeless

:00:31.:00:34.

young people are transforming derelict young houses into homes of

:00:35.:00:38.

their own. And as Gateshead go for glory in the FA Cup, ugly scenes

:00:39.:00:40.

from one of last night's ties. 600 jobs will go, conference and

:00:41.:01:03.

training centres could be closed and non essential services cut. That's

:01:04.:01:08.

what Look North understands will be outlined at a meeting tonight as

:01:09.:01:10.

Middlesbrough Council announces its savings targets for the next

:01:11.:01:15.

financial year. Last month the council warned it would have to make

:01:16.:01:19.

major job cuts as it had to save ?106 million over the next six

:01:20.:01:23.

years. The meeting starts at seven o'clock and Stuart Whincup is in

:01:24.:01:33.

Middlesbrough for us now. As you can see, protesters have gathered. They

:01:34.:01:40.

are making the point that with cuts to staffing and services, the

:01:41.:01:43.

council will not be any longer to deliver the services people rely on.

:01:44.:01:48.

From what we understand, they will not like the message coming out of

:01:49.:01:52.

the meeting tonight. Around 600 jobs will be lost in the next financial

:01:53.:01:57.

year. That will change the way the council operates.

:01:58.:02:02.

What differences will people see, in things actually closing.

:02:03.:02:10.

We are expecting the registry office to close. Two training conference

:02:11.:02:19.

centres. Reduced hours and spot centres, things that we have seen in

:02:20.:02:22.

other areas. Recycling garden services. We also expect council tax

:02:23.:02:30.

to increase by 2%. And we're expecting a big change for

:02:31.:02:35.

one of Middlesbrough's attractions. That is right. The art gallery has

:02:36.:02:39.

always been a cause of concern to some people in town, seeing that

:02:40.:02:43.

difficult times we should not be funnelling ?1 million into the

:02:44.:02:51.

gallery. Supporters claim it is recognised here and internationally.

:02:52.:02:56.

We expect to make to hear that Teeside University will take over

:02:57.:02:59.

the day`to`day running of the gallery. That will save ?350,000.

:03:00.:03:10.

A similar story across the region. That is right. The government makes

:03:11.:03:14.

the point that it is not just this region but all local authorities

:03:15.:03:19.

have to face ethical decisions. `` financial. But looking at our

:03:20.:03:26.

region, Northumberland council is looking to save:

:03:27.:03:39.

thank you very much indeed. And BBC Tees will have more reaction from

:03:40.:03:46.

people in Middlesbrough to the council cuts, with Ali Brownlee

:03:47.:03:47.

tomorrow morning from six. A desperate search for a 35`year`old

:03:48.:03:58.

man from Middlesbrough ` swept away in a river in South East Asia ` has

:03:59.:04:02.

led to a remarkable fund raising effort back here. Jonny Conley was

:04:03.:04:12.

swimming in Laos when the current carried him away. It's hoped he's

:04:13.:04:16.

managed to make it ashore on the Mekong delta. But there's no search

:04:17.:04:20.

and rescue helicopter available. So Jonny's friends and his girlfriend

:04:21.:04:23.

Kate Downey are hoping to pay for a private helicopter. And their fund

:04:24.:04:28.

raising has made five figures in just 24 hours. Our Chief Reporter

:04:29.:04:33.

Chris Stewart has the story. Pictured the night before being

:04:34.:04:38.

swept away. Tonight, a second day of fruitless searching by local

:04:39.:04:50.

fishermen. Immediately we went to try to find him. When we could not

:04:51.:05:03.

see him we ran back to contact the emergency services. But we are on a

:05:04.:05:13.

small remote island. They don't have much in the way of an emergency

:05:14.:05:20.

service. Johnny is a darker and Kate and archaeologists. They had

:05:21.:05:23.

arranged the time off work for a year long trip. `` Johnny is a

:05:24.:05:38.

docker. Good talking to your sister make it harder for easier? I have

:05:39.:05:45.

been keeping busy trying to rally people. The emotional side has not

:05:46.:05:54.

kicked in yet. By tonight the fund to pay for a private helicopter

:05:55.:05:59.

search was at ?10,000. The search resumes tomorrow.

:06:00.:06:08.

The total has in fact now reached ?14,000.

:06:09.:06:12.

The car owned by missing County Durham golf pro Peter Jackson has

:06:13.:06:16.

been found abandoned 55 miles away in Northumberland. The father`of`two

:06:17.:06:19.

set off from his home in Seaham to Castle Eden golf club last Tuesday

:06:20.:06:22.

but never arrived. Yesterday, his wife said she was at a loss to

:06:23.:06:26.

understand what had happened to him. His grey Ford Focus C`Max was

:06:27.:06:29.

recovered in Haltwhistle this morning.

:06:30.:06:35.

Admissions to a west Cumbrian care home have been suspended following a

:06:36.:06:38.

critical report by a government health watchdog. Inspectors from the

:06:39.:06:40.

Care Quality Commission found there'd been a number of incidents

:06:41.:06:44.

at the Dalton Court care home in Cockermouth. It's now been told to

:06:45.:06:50.

improve. Mark McAlindon is in our Carlisle newsroom now ` Mark, what

:06:51.:06:57.

exactly has happened? The home was the subject of an

:06:58.:07:00.

unannounced inspection from the Care Quality Commission are well this

:07:01.:07:10.

year. `` LL this year. A number of the residents have dementia, it is a

:07:11.:07:16.

spare cell of the home. `` speciality. The report does not go

:07:17.:07:25.

into a lot of detail but the Care Quality Commission issue an

:07:26.:07:29.

enforcement notice, an ultimatum for the service to improve.

:07:30.:07:35.

That has led to the suspension of admissions?

:07:36.:07:42.

That is right. In the meantime, it will not place people in the

:07:43.:07:47.

facility. What is the care home said?

:07:48.:07:54.

It is part of a larger company, the Priory group. They said nobody was

:07:55.:07:58.

available for an interview. But any statement they said an action plan

:07:59.:08:01.

was in place and making good progress.

:08:02.:08:07.

Ultimately, how do the inspectors make sure changes will be made?

:08:08.:08:13.

They will examine the action plan and then make another unannounced

:08:14.:08:18.

visit. If satisfied, the care home will carry on. If not, further

:08:19.:08:23.

action will be taken. The possibility of fines from ?4000

:08:24.:08:26.

upwards. There are fears that people living

:08:27.:08:30.

in one of the most remote parts of the Yorkshire Dales could be cut off

:08:31.:08:34.

this winter because of a one million pound road works programme, ahead of

:08:35.:08:37.

the Tour de France. The main road out of Swaledale will be closed for

:08:38.:08:41.

12 weeks from February so that it can be rebuilt. But that means

:08:42.:08:45.

residents, delivery drivers and the emergency services will all have to

:08:46.:08:48.

use diversions over the hills. Spencer Stokes reports. The

:08:49.:08:52.

temporary traffic lights have arrived. Work to patch up a

:08:53.:08:58.

deteriorating road surface is underway. But this is just the

:08:59.:09:03.

start. In February, this road will be closed for 12 weeks. The only way

:09:04.:09:09.

in or out of the valley will be an narrow murder and lanes. They are

:09:10.:09:15.

often shocked by heavy snowfall. `` narrow movieland `` moorland lanes.

:09:16.:09:28.

People are being cut off from a lifeline road. They will have to

:09:29.:09:34.

travel over the fails to get to the services they need. `` fells.

:09:35.:09:45.

Peoples lives will be put in peril. It would force residents onto

:09:46.:09:50.

exposed roots. This is the summit of what will become the main road at

:09:51.:09:55.

1400 feet, a difficult drive at the best of times. When the snow and ice

:09:56.:10:00.

comes, it is treacherous and frequently impassable. For the last

:10:01.:10:07.

number of years the eels have experienced long winters. `` Dales.

:10:08.:10:16.

For those relying on their own car, the drive over the top could be

:10:17.:10:21.

challenging. Extract direct and players will be brought in to make

:10:22.:10:27.

sure minor roads are safe. Plans are in place. It will afford the same

:10:28.:10:36.

level of maintenance and treatment, and collectors will be out on a

:10:37.:10:44.

regular basis. `` characters. `` gritters. They need to guarantee a

:10:45.:10:59.

winter gritter permanently. Nothing less than that will do. The dividend

:11:00.:11:08.

for the community from the race visiting will be smooth, resurfaced

:11:09.:11:14.

roads. But it seems a long way off. It could prove to be a difficult

:11:15.:11:16.

journey for the residents. Still to come ` Mark's here with

:11:17.:11:23.

Wednesday's sport. And he home help scheme with a difference, on

:11:24.:11:32.

Wearside. The weather is set to turn quiet by the weekend. Showers in the

:11:33.:11:34.

meantime. Critics of the process say it can

:11:35.:11:48.

contaminate ground water and even cause small earthquakes.

:11:49.:11:54.

Nevertheless, the first planning application in the region for the

:11:55.:11:57.

extraction of shale gas from rock by the controversial process of

:11:58.:12:00.

fracking will be made within the next twelve months. Dart Energy

:12:01.:12:09.

wants to drill close to York. The Australian company behind the scheme

:12:10.:12:12.

says the cheap gas can cut domestic and industrial energy bills. Our

:12:13.:12:15.

Business Correspondent Ian Reeve reports. This is Dart Energy's

:12:16.:12:17.

Scottish project. The company that wants to extract shale gas by

:12:18.:12:21.

fracking from a site close to York is currently in limbo here. A public

:12:22.:12:26.

enquiry has stalled work at the coal bed gas development. It shows how

:12:27.:12:28.

controversial the issue of what's called unconventional gas is. And

:12:29.:12:36.

undoubtedly will be near York.Fracking sees water, sand and

:12:37.:12:39.

chemicals pumped into the ground at high pressure to fracture

:12:40.:12:41.

underground rock, and extract the gas trapped in it. The

:12:42.:12:50.

infrastructure required leads to a massive impact for local residents.

:12:51.:12:58.

According to the company eyeing up York it has many benefits. And using

:12:59.:13:02.

cheap shale gas could transform a place like this. We need it for

:13:03.:13:17.

decades to come. Jobs, taxes, controlling the environment in the

:13:18.:13:20.

UK, isn't that better than importing gas from Norway? Longer term, it

:13:21.:13:27.

would create security supply issues from other countries. Companies here

:13:28.:13:33.

at the Wilton chemical site on Teesside complain endlessly about

:13:34.:13:36.

the cost of energy. Much cheaper gas would give them more stability and

:13:37.:13:40.

mean they'd be able able to commit far more to job security. And the

:13:41.:13:49.

gas could come from all around us. A host of drilling licences have been

:13:50.:13:53.

issued in the region for possible fracking. One is in Middlesbrough

:13:54.:14:00.

stretching all the way to Redcar. A number are close to Malton in North

:14:01.:14:08.

Yorkshire. One centres on Pickering. Another covers an area from

:14:09.:14:11.

Scarborough to Helmsley. They are only exploratory licences though.

:14:12.:14:13.

Planning approval would have to be given, and regulatory tests passed

:14:14.:14:17.

before any gas comes out of the ground. York though is likely to be

:14:18.:14:20.

the first, with a planning application submitted by this

:14:21.:14:23.

company within the next 12 months. And if you have a view on that

:14:24.:14:27.

story, let us know what you think by logging on to the Look North

:14:28.:14:31.

Facebook page. The details on your screen now.

:14:32.:14:34.

Homeless young people in Sunderland have begun work on transforming 20

:14:35.:14:37.

derelict houses into homes of their own. It's a project being run by

:14:38.:14:42.

Sunderland Council and the homelessness charity Centrepoint,

:14:43.:14:44.

which has joint`funded the programme together with money from the

:14:45.:14:50.

government. It's hoped that the scheme will provide homes for up to

:14:51.:14:53.

40 young people. Damian O'Neil reports. These filtering tradesmen

:14:54.:15:01.

know what they are doing and do it for a living. `` full`time. Working

:15:02.:15:06.

alongside them his 19`year`old Daniel. He is putting new skills to

:15:07.:15:13.

practice in this house, which he will move into before Christmas. I

:15:14.:15:20.

was living elsewhere and had the opportunity to move up here. But my

:15:21.:15:25.

and ended up kicking me out. I have been on the streets ever since. This

:15:26.:15:30.

has turned around. It has given me the opportunity to work on my own

:15:31.:15:33.

house and get a qualification in decorating and joinery. Sadly there

:15:34.:15:40.

are more homeless people than homes, but they are learning valuable new

:15:41.:15:48.

skills. I am doing different courses. I have completed one and I

:15:49.:15:52.

am due to go on another. It goes on my CV. I have signed up for the RAF.

:15:53.:16:06.

Daniel likes doing all the work! This gives us the chance to get

:16:07.:16:15.

people many skills in one project. They'll get valuable experience of

:16:16.:16:21.

training and some of them may move into the homes which they have

:16:22.:16:26.

refurbished. Prince William visited on Friday and Daniel was selected to

:16:27.:16:31.

show him around. Time for this week's Sportskids now

:16:32.:16:35.

and tonight we meet a youngster from Newcastle who's aiming for Olympic

:16:36.:16:39.

glory. It's a sport where you have to be fast, strong and fit ` as well

:16:40.:16:43.

as very tactical, as Stephanie Cleasby has been finding out. I15

:16:44.:16:58.

years old and my sport is fencing. `` I am 15 years old. It is fast,

:16:59.:17:06.

frantic, it is fencing. You need quick feet. The fight in the last

:17:07.:17:10.

three minutes. I am really competitive. Always have been,

:17:11.:17:17.

always will be. Her love of the sport began at school when she was

:17:18.:17:21.

eight. She quickly realised it was for her. You can hit them anywhere

:17:22.:17:30.

on the body. Head to foot. If you hate each other at the same time, it

:17:31.:17:32.

of counts. She joined the Newcastle club when

:17:33.:17:49.

she was ten and has gone on to fence for England under fifteenths and

:17:50.:17:55.

great little under 17 is. What is your greatest achievement? Getting

:17:56.:18:05.

the Great squad. `` getting on the Great Britain squad. I would love to

:18:06.:18:15.

compete at the Olympic Games. The first time we held that she would

:18:16.:18:19.

fence the Great Britain was a great day. `` we had. Really proud. `` we

:18:20.:18:26.

had. She has got was she deserves as a result of the work. She is in the

:18:27.:18:32.

top 40 in Britain for her age. She is dynamic, athletic, lots of

:18:33.:18:41.

balance. Lots of explosive energy. She will use those skills when she

:18:42.:18:45.

flies off to Copenhagen to compete with the Great Britain squad next

:18:46.:18:52.

month. Is it all you think about? Yes. I just really want to train.

:18:53.:18:59.

And compete and win things. It looks very easy, I think. It is

:19:00.:19:10.

not. It is very technical and fast. There is only one way to settle

:19:11.:19:11.

that. A duel. As a European Cup winner, Gary Mills

:19:12.:19:49.

is used to setting the bar high. The Gateshead and former York City boss

:19:50.:19:53.

gave his new charges three targets ` win promotion back to the Football

:19:54.:19:56.

League, win the FA Trophy and reach the third round of the FA Cup. Well,

:19:57.:20:00.

having won nine of his 15 Conference Premier games in charge, Mills has

:20:01.:20:04.

seen his new side climb to within two points of the play`off

:20:05.:20:07.

places. And tonight in front of at least two and half thousand fans at

:20:08.:20:10.

the International Stadium, Gateshead will attempt to reach the FA Cup

:20:11.:20:13.

second round by beating the League Two leaders Oxford in a replay. The

:20:14.:20:21.

league is always your bread and butter. We want to get into the top

:20:22.:20:27.

five. Financially, with the award is coming with the FA Cup, that is

:20:28.:20:32.

massive for the football club. To beat Oxford on Wednesday is

:20:33.:20:36.

massive. Lots of money at stake. The chairman deserves a break. He is

:20:37.:20:42.

telling me that Gateshead have never reached the third round. We know it

:20:43.:20:51.

we need to have two do to get there. Yes, so the winner will travel to

:20:52.:20:57.

Wrexham in the second round. But I'm just hearing the game has been

:20:58.:21:08.

called off. We will try to confirm. Tough words now from Gary Mills's

:21:09.:21:12.

successor as York City manager, Nigel Worthington. He branded his

:21:13.:21:14.

side's performance in the first 70 minutes of their FA Cup replay

:21:15.:21:18.

defeat at home to Bristol Rovers as "pathetic" and "robbing good people

:21:19.:21:20.

of hard`earned money." Carlisle, meanwhile, required an injury`time

:21:21.:21:23.

winner to scrape past non`league Boreham Wood ` with ugly scenes at

:21:24.:21:27.

the final whistle. We'll come to the post`match controversy in a moment

:21:28.:21:31.

but first to the game itself which nearly ended in embarrassment for

:21:32.:21:34.

Carlisle. Conference South club Boreham Wood, who lie 74 places

:21:35.:21:37.

below the Cumbrians, went ahead through Luke Garrard's

:21:38.:21:39.

penalty.Garrard had another chance from the spot two minutes later but

:21:40.:21:42.

stand`in Carlisle keeper Greg Fleming kept the score at one`nil.

:21:43.:21:49.

It was only after 80 minutes and a poor display that the home side got

:21:50.:21:52.

back into it. Striker Lee Miller, just back from suspension, headed

:21:53.:21:57.

the equaliser. And then in stoppage time, substitute Mark Beck scored a

:21:58.:22:00.

dramatic winner, which saw Carlisle book a second round tie at home to

:22:01.:22:03.

Brentford.Bad tempered scenes followed Beck's goal with Carlisle

:22:04.:22:05.

players accused of goading their opponents and later Boreham Wood

:22:06.:22:08.

hitting back at suggestions their players urinated on the floor of

:22:09.:22:11.

their dressing room at Brunton Park ` blaming the mess on spilt orange

:22:12.:22:17.

juice. Alleged damage to a dressing room door is also being

:22:18.:22:20.

investigated. There were over 500 more fans at York City's Bootham

:22:21.:22:24.

Crescent than at Brunton Park last night. But if the majority of the

:22:25.:22:31.

2,000 crowd thought they were going to watch their side reach the second

:22:32.:22:34.

round against fellow League Two strugglers Bristol Rovers they were

:22:35.:22:38.

sadly mistaken. Manager Nigel Worthington felt some of his players

:22:39.:22:41.

weren't mentally right for the game and accused them of gifting Rovers a

:22:42.:22:45.

three goal lead. It was only in the last 20 minutes when Worthington

:22:46.:22:48.

felt his players had given the York fans value for money, Wes Fletcher

:22:49.:22:52.

scoring from the spot. And it was Fletcher who made it 3`2 from long

:22:53.:22:56.

range but the visitors held on. As the old cliche goes, the Minstermen

:22:57.:22:59.

can now concentrate on the league. The Gateshead game tonight is off.

:23:00.:23:04.

The bitch is unplayable. Good luck to Berwick Rangers. They are home to

:23:05.:23:10.

Montrose and Scottish league two. `` the patch is unplayable.

:23:11.:23:13.

They survived turbulent seas, competition from around the globe `

:23:14.:23:18.

and even a near miss with a cyclone. But now two sailors from our region

:23:19.:23:21.

are celebrating after becoming world champions for the second time.

:23:22.:23:24.

Graham Vials and Chris Turner won the Flying 15 Sailing Championships

:23:25.:23:27.

in Hong Kong. But their path to glory was far from straightforward.

:23:28.:23:33.

Peter Harris donned his life jacket and went to meet them. Even on the

:23:34.:23:43.

placid waters of this reservoir it looks difficult. Doing it for real

:23:44.:23:52.

men to the open sea. `` meant. A cyclone came through just prior to

:23:53.:23:56.

the one which hit the Philippines. It came within 200 kilometres of

:23:57.:24:00.

Hong Kong and got some pretty interesting weather. It is great

:24:01.:24:08.

fun, we enjoy it, it is part of the sport. Graham and Chris beat off

:24:09.:24:16.

teams from Australia, France and Spain among others to win in the

:24:17.:24:19.

Flying 15 world sailing championships. They go at the same

:24:20.:24:25.

speed. Tactics come into it. Different wind strengths, angles,

:24:26.:24:32.

teamwork, obviously, having a good team and the ability to seal well

:24:33.:24:35.

together, and know each other's thoughts, that is important. Both

:24:36.:24:41.
