Hello, welcome to Thursday's Look North, on a day when we've been | :00:00. | :00:08.
battered by high winds. Roads closed, homes and business evacuated | :00:09. | :00:11.
this evening, as rivers flood in the high winds and tidal surge, testing | :00:12. | :00:21.
coastal defences. This is the big test. This is a one in 30 year high | :00:22. | :00:27.
tide, so it is a really big test of this ?25 million worth of | :00:28. | :00:29.
Environment Agency sea defences. It's been a day of disruption with | :00:30. | :00:32.
lorries overturned, trains and planes cancelled. We're live across | :00:33. | :00:35.
the region with the latest. Also tonight, Look North learns more | :00:36. | :00:39.
than 160 girls on Teesside are receiving counselling after being | :00:40. | :00:43.
groomed for sex. And ` staying warm. But how will the | :00:44. | :00:46.
Chancellor's cut in green levies affect the poorest in our community? | :00:47. | :00:52.
And in sport ` Plenty of goals last night but not always in the right | :00:53. | :00:55.
net. Newcastle's unbeaten run comes to an end in South Wales while | :00:56. | :00:58.
Sunderland push Chelsea all the way in a seven goal thriller at the | :00:59. | :01:00.
Stadium of Light. Homes and businesses evacuated. | :01:01. | :01:20.
Roads and bridges closed. Lorries overturned. Trains and planes | :01:21. | :01:24.
cancelled. Trees felled. Schools forced to shut. Thousands of homes | :01:25. | :01:29.
and businesses without power. And the coast battered by waves, with | :01:30. | :01:32.
sandbags lining the streets to guard against flooding ` and it's still | :01:33. | :01:37.
going on now. Just some of the disruption the region faced today, | :01:38. | :01:40.
due to the storm`force winds which touched 80 miles an hour in places, | :01:41. | :01:44.
along with the worst tidal surge in 30 years. And tonight, there remain | :01:45. | :01:49.
59 ongoing flood incidents across our region, with hundreds of people | :01:50. | :01:54.
evacuated from their homes. Very few rail services are operating to | :01:55. | :01:57.
Scotland on either the east or west coast mainlines. We've had reporters | :01:58. | :02:02.
out across our region since early this morning. In a moment, we'll | :02:03. | :02:06.
cross to Phil Connell, who's in Redcar. But first, let's join Andrew | :02:07. | :02:14.
Hartley in Newcastle. Andrew. I've been a journalist working on | :02:15. | :02:18.
Tyneside for 25 years, and I've never seen this before. The river | :02:19. | :02:23.
Tyne bursting its banks on Newcastle's quayside, one of this | :02:24. | :02:28.
country's most iconic places, around the millennium Bridge and the Tyne | :02:29. | :02:34.
Bridge. It's all caused by a huge tidal wave that was caused by the | :02:35. | :02:42.
wind that has reached this spot. Truly one of the most remarkable | :02:43. | :02:50.
windy days we've ever seen. A day of brutal winds caused | :02:51. | :02:55.
disruption across road and rail. Here on a bridge between Newcastle | :02:56. | :02:58.
and Gateshead, a lorry was blown on to a car. No one was seriously hurt. | :02:59. | :03:03.
Many other major routes across the region were closed at some time | :03:04. | :03:07.
during the day. Rail passengers also suffered. Here at Newcastle's | :03:08. | :03:10.
Central Station, many cancellations and delays, with no services in and | :03:11. | :03:20.
out of Scotland. Women to be going, but all the trains cancelled. Our | :03:21. | :03:23.
manager has sorted out and think Ralston was to go. I'm being paid, | :03:24. | :03:28.
so it's all right. The train from Edinburgh is cancelled, so I got one | :03:29. | :03:34.
of the trains out of Scotland, and I'm just going to wait and see what | :03:35. | :03:38.
comes up. I'm trying to get accident. I was trying to get direct | :03:39. | :03:41.
train, but now I'm going to go a different route that is changes. It | :03:42. | :03:42.
is a bit annoying. A timetable for yesterday 's game is a bit of an | :03:43. | :03:51.
advantage in terms of knowing was achievable to run today in order to | :03:52. | :03:54.
keep as many people living as was safely possible, but really, the | :03:55. | :03:59.
messages to check for you travel. The East Coast website, on Twitter, | :04:00. | :04:02.
and if you are planning on travelling today and would like to | :04:03. | :04:05.
travel tomorrow, your tickets will be valid tomorrow. Air travel was | :04:06. | :04:08.
also difficult. They diverted easyJet blamed was struck by | :04:09. | :04:12.
lightning approaching Newcastle Airport, and a ferry from Amsterdam | :04:13. | :04:16.
with more than 300 passengers was held up close to the mouth of the | :04:17. | :04:21.
Tyne for two hours. A number of different factors have occurred at | :04:22. | :04:23.
the same time to create the tidal swell, and we needed to wait for the | :04:24. | :04:27.
wind to drop in order to have a safer approach of the river. This is | :04:28. | :04:33.
really choppy weather. We were stuck outside the harbour for two hours. | :04:34. | :04:39.
It short and some people's trips, I imagine. Falling trees were never | :04:40. | :04:42.
have the will stop this scene on a road near Gateshead, and this across | :04:43. | :04:45.
the East Coast Mainline in Northumberland. And a narrow escape | :04:46. | :04:54.
a family from stock. `` Stockton. This tree missed a room where a | :04:55. | :04:57.
two`year`old girl was asleep, and came so close, it down the satellite | :04:58. | :05:01.
dish. At the heart of the storm, part of roof of Hartlepool College | :05:02. | :05:05.
was ripped off, and thousands of homes across the region were without | :05:06. | :05:09.
power. Another blow for the region on this windiest days. | :05:10. | :05:15.
As you can see, the river Tyne has completely subsided, so all of that | :05:16. | :05:18.
flooding has gone, but there are reports that the river Tees is | :05:19. | :05:21.
getting in on the act now with some reports of loading in Middlesbrough | :05:22. | :05:22.
and then, and there are scenes of flooding in the area around Blyth | :05:23. | :05:29.
harbour, with reports that hundreds of homes have been evacuated around | :05:30. | :05:35.
there. What is certain to night is that this is a story that has not | :05:36. | :05:39.
blown over. Well, the other big problem | :05:40. | :05:42.
alongside the wind was the high tide, which caused waves to come | :05:43. | :05:45.
crashing into the coastline. Many business closed for the day in case | :05:46. | :05:48.
of flooding. Phil Connell has spent the day in East Cleveland ` and is | :05:49. | :05:55.
in Redcar tonight. Phil. Well, dramatic scenes here along the | :05:56. | :05:59.
coast tonight. Here in Redcar, the high tide arrived 5:00pm. The sea | :06:00. | :06:04.
defences here have been largely successful, but you can see that in | :06:05. | :06:08.
certain places, they had been breached. The debris on the floor | :06:09. | :06:12.
here, and further down, the road has been closed because of localised | :06:13. | :06:15.
flooding. For residents here, it has been a day of watching and waiting | :06:16. | :06:22.
to see what the weather would bring. Battening down the hatches and | :06:23. | :06:24.
preparing for the worst. In Saltburn, this morning, shops along | :06:25. | :06:28.
the seafront were closing early. People here took all possible | :06:29. | :06:32.
precautions to protect their property. It will affect the | :06:33. | :06:37.
business. People will be able to come down and get their fish and | :06:38. | :06:44.
chips, the locals. The restaurant would maybe flood out. Concerns here | :06:45. | :06:48.
are understandable. These were the scenes in Saltburn in September, | :06:49. | :06:52.
with torrential rain causing extensive damage to several parts of | :06:53. | :06:57.
the town. The aftermath, really, all the debris that was left everywhere. | :06:58. | :06:58.
The owner of this shop business escaped being flooded by | :06:59. | :07:06.
just several feet in September. He was fearful that night's conditions | :07:07. | :07:10.
could be even worse. You can't do anything. It's in the hands of God. | :07:11. | :07:14.
We can't do anything about it. All we can do is make the try and stop | :07:15. | :07:19.
the always getting flooded, or something like that, but apart from | :07:20. | :07:22.
that, that is all we can do. Along the coast in Redcar tonight has | :07:23. | :07:27.
brought the first real test of the sea defences. Recently completed | :07:28. | :07:32.
here, they cost ?25 million. The council leader says he will be | :07:33. | :07:36.
watching closely. This is the big test. This is a one in 30 year high | :07:37. | :07:40.
tide, I am led to believe, so it is a really big test for this ?25 | :07:41. | :07:43.
million worth of Environment Agency sea defence, and it is really a very | :07:44. | :07:49.
big test indeed. Back in Saltburn, the peer was closed today for safety | :07:50. | :07:53.
reasons by the council. Our coastal towns ready and prepared to night | :07:54. | :08:01.
for whatever the weather may bring? Well, further north from here, 300 | :08:02. | :08:04.
homes have been evacuated at Port Clarence because of budding, with | :08:05. | :08:08.
residents being taken into emergency accommodation. `` flooding. The | :08:09. | :08:13.
concern is that while the high tide may have passed, tidal surge could | :08:14. | :08:16.
still cause further problems, and let's not forget, we still have that | :08:17. | :08:20.
further high tide to cope with at 5am. | :08:21. | :08:23.
Thank you. Well, it's been a similar situation | :08:24. | :08:26.
across in Cumbria, where many roads were closed and rail services | :08:27. | :08:29.
suspended. Damian O'Neill is in Carlisle tonight. Damian. | :08:30. | :08:36.
It's been a very wild and windy day right across Cumbria. The | :08:37. | :08:40.
hardest hit with the coast, which was battered by gale force winds and | :08:41. | :08:44.
lashed by the rain. Whitehaven harbour was closed and the police | :08:45. | :08:46.
sealed off large areas of it. They warn people not to go near it to do | :08:47. | :08:49.
any sightseeing, that didn't stop everybody. But there were really | :08:50. | :08:54.
some very scary looking scenes that you didn't want to get too close to. | :08:55. | :08:58.
There are still no train services from Carlisle running either to or | :08:59. | :09:01.
from Scotland. The West Coast line has been down all day. The latest | :09:02. | :09:06.
information from Virgin trains is that they will be down until about | :09:07. | :09:11.
11 o'clock p.m. , and meanwhile, there are still homes and businesses | :09:12. | :09:15.
across Cumbria without power. That was double the figure earlier on in | :09:16. | :09:18.
the day, and several roads across the county have been closed, | :09:19. | :09:23.
including the ASICS six. `` ASICS T6. | :09:24. | :09:26.
According to the Environment Agency, hundreds of homes are at risk of | :09:27. | :09:29.
flooding in what what we're told could be the most serious tidal | :09:30. | :09:33.
surge in decades. A number of flood warnings are in place. And amongst | :09:34. | :09:36.
the many incidents going on, we've heard in the last hour that the | :09:37. | :09:39.
Glass Centre and other premises at Sunderland have been evacuated as a | :09:40. | :09:42.
precaution. Our correspondent Mark Denten joins us live now from the | :09:43. | :09:45.
Tyneside headquarters of the Environment Agency. Mark. | :09:46. | :09:51.
This is the Environment Agency control room at neighbouring on the | :09:52. | :09:56.
river Tyne, just outside Newcastle, and I can sell you that there are 18 | :09:57. | :10:00.
flood warnings in force at the moment. The flood situation is the | :10:01. | :10:05.
highest tide for 60 years, something that has kept the buyer and agency | :10:06. | :10:09.
busy all afternoon, and no doubt will also tomorrow. I am joined by | :10:10. | :10:15.
Phil Wilton from the buyer and agency. What are the latest? We have | :10:16. | :10:20.
18 flood warnings across the North Coast line. We're not expecting any | :10:21. | :10:24.
further problems Cumbria, but in the North East, we still have flood | :10:25. | :10:27.
warnings. We are begging to remain in place tomorrow morning for them | :10:28. | :10:30.
where are the areas you are particularly worried about? There | :10:31. | :10:34.
are a number of areas. Live was a worry, that is its IP tide is | :10:35. | :10:40.
dropping there. The Northumberland coast and particularly on Teeside, | :10:41. | :10:42.
there are a number of flood warnings there. What about the situation? How | :10:43. | :10:49.
do we compare to the past, saying the situation is only comparable but | :10:50. | :10:54.
events of 60 years ago? But did their put it into context. This is a | :10:55. | :10:59.
really high tide. We have a wonder Lolita Sergent of the normal spring | :11:00. | :11:03.
tight, so this is the highest tide since 1953, when 300 people died on | :11:04. | :11:07.
this coast. We have come a long way since then intended defences. The | :11:08. | :11:10.
tide levels are not as I have come a long way since then intended | :11:11. | :11:12.
defences. The tide levels are not as IFR. But they are very high, and we | :11:13. | :11:15.
are respecting more floods the night. And the situation Cumbria, we | :11:16. | :11:18.
have a lot of power shortages and power cuts, but there is also an | :11:19. | :11:21.
issue of flooding, I gather. I never yes, there were a number of warnings | :11:22. | :11:24.
in Korea. For at one point today. But with the high tide at lunchtime, | :11:25. | :11:32.
people will not be affected. People will be worried into the early hours | :11:33. | :11:35.
and tomorrow. There is a number they can call if they want to get advice | :11:36. | :11:38.
and find out what the situation is. Could you give is that number? | :11:39. | :11:41.
and find out what the situation is. Could you give That is on screen. We | :11:42. | :11:46.
would ask people to call that number and ask for a service if they are in | :11:47. | :11:50.
an at risk area, and they can do that from the phone or the website. | :11:51. | :11:56.
It has been a busy day for many people, not least our weather | :11:57. | :12:03.
presenter. Are we over the worst two yes, the tides are turning out, the | :12:04. | :12:06.
winds are starting to ease, and we are seeing the last of the rainfall. | :12:07. | :12:09.
Here with the earlier radar picture. The raindrop drenched the east of | :12:10. | :12:18.
Cumbria. I will be back with a full forecast later. Thank you. | :12:19. | :12:21.
Other news, and the story from Teesside Crown Court of how | :12:22. | :12:23.
vulnerable young girls were befriended, groomed and then | :12:24. | :12:27.
sexually exploited. Some were given free taxi rides, drink and drugs. | :12:28. | :12:30.
Guilty verdicts have been delivered against 32`year`old Shakil Munir and | :12:31. | :12:33.
19`year`old Sakib Ahmed, both from Middlesbrough. Detectives said they | :12:34. | :12:42.
left their victims, six girls aged between 13 and 15, traumatised. But | :12:43. | :12:45.
tonight, Look North can reveal this isn't an isolated case. We've | :12:46. | :12:48.
learned a staggering 160 young girls on Teesside are currently being | :12:49. | :12:51.
supported by a North East charity after they were groomed and | :12:52. | :12:55.
exploited by older men. Stuart Whincup reports. | :12:56. | :13:00.
Some girls were picked up in the early hours of the morning. They | :13:01. | :13:06.
were given free taxi`rides, drink and drugs. At first they were | :13:07. | :13:09.
befriended, taken to nightclubs and parties. Then it all changed, and | :13:10. | :13:12.
they were exploited, assaulted and abused. This woman, whose words are | :13:13. | :13:15.
spoken by an actor, recently discovered her daughter was one of | :13:16. | :13:18.
six young girls sexually abused by the men. I felt sick. I was | :13:19. | :13:29.
devastated. I couldn't believe a person could do that to a child. | :13:30. | :13:34.
That's what she is, she is a child. You could tell what she was. He knew | :13:35. | :13:39.
what she was. She was a child. I felt physically sick. It's turned my | :13:40. | :13:44.
world upside down. I sleep in the living room now, by the door, so no | :13:45. | :13:49.
one can get in, and I know she will be safe. And this was the man who | :13:50. | :13:52.
abused her daughter. 32`year`old Shakil Munir. A local taxi driver, | :13:53. | :14:00.
he was more than twice her age. On one occasion, he picked one of the | :14:01. | :14:03.
girls up from her home in the early hours of the morning in his taxi. | :14:04. | :14:08.
She was wearing slippers and pyjamas and a dressing gown. He took every | :14:09. | :14:16.
drive around the area full. He found a lay`by in a secluded location and | :14:17. | :14:20.
there, he sexually assaulted her. The young girl was just 14. But | :14:21. | :14:24.
Munir didn't act alone. His friend, 19`year`old Sakib Ahmed, admitted | :14:25. | :14:32.
sexually assaulting five girls. Quite frankly, their behaviour is | :14:33. | :14:35.
disgraceful. These men did realise there was a huge age gap between | :14:36. | :14:38.
them and their victims, and despite that, they have continued with their | :14:39. | :14:43.
behaviour, continued to abuse the girls, and as a result, they left | :14:44. | :14:48.
their victims in some cases quite traumatised. Worryingly, these cases | :14:49. | :14:51.
are not rare. Barnardo's says fewer young girls may be walking the | :14:52. | :14:54.
streets. But hidden from public view, inside flats and houses | :14:55. | :14:56.
they're still being sexually exploited. The charity has told Look | :14:57. | :14:58.
North it's currently young girls in Teesside alone who | :14:59. | :15:05.
have been groomed by older men. Some are as young as 12. We have seen | :15:06. | :15:13.
that typical grooming process happen in all of those cases. The friend I | :15:14. | :15:17.
slightly older or often much older men, or a friend of a male, applying | :15:18. | :15:24.
that young person with gifts, friendship, and love, with alcohol | :15:25. | :15:29.
and sometimes drugs, and then getting them into a state where they | :15:30. | :15:33.
feel they have to comply to what is going to happen. This afternoon, | :15:34. | :15:35.
17`year`old Ateeq Lateef was found guilty of helping Sakib Ahmed to | :15:36. | :15:39.
meet and abuse the girls. They and Shakil Munir will all be sentenced | :15:40. | :15:41.
at a later date. the Chancellor delivered his Autumn | :15:42. | :15:54.
statement today in one of the most widely trailed headlines has been a | :15:55. | :15:57.
reduction in green levies on energy bills, giving consumers a ?50 cut in | :15:58. | :16:00.
their annual payments. But will there be losers as well as winners? | :16:01. | :16:03.
Our Environment Correspondent, Adrian Pitches, has been to see how | :16:04. | :16:07.
that green levy money is being spent insulating people's homes on | :16:08. | :16:10.
Tyneside. The tenant of this Whitley Bay flat | :16:11. | :16:14.
spends every winter huddled in one room, unable to heat the rest of her | :16:15. | :16:21.
home. She has been living here for four years with little or no | :16:22. | :16:26.
heating. What heating she has had has been wholly inadequate. Spending | :16:27. | :16:34.
?35 or more per week purely on direct heating. But this winter will | :16:35. | :16:36.
be different. Central heating is being installed for free. There is | :16:37. | :16:41.
funding out there for people, we just need to get their message | :16:42. | :16:44.
across that it is there, all you have to do is ask, and we will try | :16:45. | :16:48.
to help where we can. There are criteria that have to be met. Not | :16:49. | :16:52.
everyone will get 100% of everything for free, but wherever we can, we | :16:53. | :16:56.
will do that. Warm Zone works across the North, funded by the energy | :16:57. | :16:59.
company Obligation. The Big Six have to help those who cannot afford to | :17:00. | :17:02.
heat their damp and draughty homes. But then they charge all of us for | :17:03. | :17:06.
carrying out that work. The average dual fuel bill is currently about | :17:07. | :17:11.
?1,325. Of that, ?115 pays for green energy or warmer homes. Just 9% of | :17:12. | :17:18.
the total bill. The Energy Company Obligation, or ECO, is ?55 ` almost | :17:19. | :17:24.
half of that ?115. While the Renewables Obligation, the subsidy | :17:25. | :17:29.
for green energy, is ?35. Slashing the ECO will enable energy companies | :17:30. | :17:33.
to cut bills. But the old and the cold could suffer. You will have | :17:34. | :17:42.
fewer people employed, more people living in cold, damp homes, and | :17:43. | :17:45.
that's just after we seen the recent excess winter death statistics, | :17:46. | :17:51.
people dying in this country. That is frankly a national scandal. We | :17:52. | :17:54.
need to invest in more of this to avoid that, pushed down excess | :17:55. | :17:57.
winter deaths, employ more people, boost the local economy. Eileen and | :17:58. | :18:00.
Pierce had central heating installed a week ago and their home has been | :18:01. | :18:02.
transformed. This feels like Christmas has come early. In years | :18:03. | :18:17.
like this, our quality`of`life is lot there were a lot better, and I | :18:18. | :18:24.
hope that when thousands of pensioners die in the winter, they | :18:25. | :18:28.
are saying we have cold winter, but when you're young, you can take it. | :18:29. | :18:32.
As you get older, you really feel it. It has been heaven. It really | :18:33. | :18:38.
is. They have come straight in, and I could live in a little bit longer | :18:39. | :18:43.
in bed ! That was good. It is usually, you have to get up early to | :18:44. | :18:48.
get the heating ready and get the room warmer. Many people like Eileen | :18:49. | :18:51.
and Pierce will be warmer this winter, thanks to the ECO scheme. | :18:52. | :18:55.
But many more may miss out in future. | :18:56. | :19:06.
Football now. Not a great night and the football front. There was a | :19:07. | :19:09.
thriller on Wearside, , and if Sunderland do end up getting | :19:10. | :19:12.
relegated, it's clear that under Gus Poyet, they will have gone down | :19:13. | :19:15.
fighting. The Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho looked a relieved man at | :19:16. | :19:18.
last night's final whistle. He'd just watched his side win an | :19:19. | :19:22.
exciting game 4`3 at the Stadium of Light, leaving Poyet's men rooted to | :19:23. | :19:25.
the bottom. But there may be hope yet. | :19:26. | :19:30.
As Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet, a former Chelsea player, greeted | :19:31. | :19:33.
Jose Mourinho, late arriving fans held up by delays on both road and | :19:34. | :19:37.
rail were raising an eyebrow at Steven Fletcher starting on the | :19:38. | :19:39.
bench, with fellow striker Joze Altidore restored the the starting | :19:40. | :19:44.
line`up. But it proved an inspired decision, as Altidore, the USA | :19:45. | :19:47.
international, opened the scoring early on for the bottom club with a | :19:48. | :19:51.
smart finish. Too early, complained some home fans on Twitter, and so it | :19:52. | :19:55.
proved, as man of the match Eden Hazard, who terrorised the Black | :19:56. | :19:59.
Cats all night, set up Frank Lampard for the simplest of equalisers | :20:00. | :20:02.
before putting the visitors in front with a precise finish. But | :20:03. | :20:07.
Sunderland are improving and, when John O'Shea equalised early in the | :20:08. | :20:10.
second half, Chelsea knew they'd have to raise their game once again. | :20:11. | :20:14.
While Poyet, like Mourinho afterwards, was critical of his | :20:15. | :20:16.
side's defending, the Uruguayan conceded Hazard's masterclass was | :20:17. | :20:21.
unplayable. There were penalty shouts at both ends after that, and | :20:22. | :20:24.
when the tiring Bardsley put the ball into his own net to leave | :20:25. | :20:28.
Chelsea 4`2 ahead, that seemed to be that. | :20:29. | :20:30.
But back came Bardsley and Sunderland to suggest a thrilling | :20:31. | :20:35.
climax. It did fizzle out in stoppage time, with tired legs on | :20:36. | :20:38.
both sides, but Tottenham know they'll have to equal Chelsea's | :20:39. | :20:41.
class and commitment on Saturday tea`time. | :20:42. | :20:48.
We're probably looking at the games that Chelsea played this season, | :20:49. | :20:51.
they made extra effort today to beat us. We have to make sure that they | :20:52. | :20:55.
suffer a lot when they come here to beat us. | :20:56. | :20:58.
Despite Swansea having the bulk of possession, Newcastle had the best | :20:59. | :21:01.
chance in the early stages, but Loic Remy, who's scored eight goals in | :21:02. | :21:04.
nine league games, saw his shot brilliantly saved by Michel Vorm. | :21:05. | :21:07.
The Swans with without their top scorers Wilfried Bony and Michu, but | :21:08. | :21:10.
it didn't seem to matter when substitute Nathan Dyer put Swansea | :21:11. | :21:14.
ahead on the stroke of half time. Mathieu Debuchy found himself on the | :21:15. | :21:17.
scoresheet at the wrong end after the break when Jonjo Shelvey's | :21:18. | :21:21.
strike went in off the Frenchman. The final word went to Shelvey | :21:22. | :21:24.
though, with Krul unable to keep out his fabulous strike from outside the | :21:25. | :21:27.
area. Newcastle barely threatened in the second half, but Alan Pardew | :21:28. | :21:30.
felt things might have been different if a couple of decisions | :21:31. | :21:33.
had gone their way, including a penalty appeal when Remy's goalbound | :21:34. | :21:37.
shot hit Ben Davies' arm with the score at 1`0. Big calls, and we | :21:38. | :21:45.
didn't get them. That's unfortunate, because we were on a great run, and | :21:46. | :21:50.
the brakes have gone against us tonight. It is a bit galling for us. | :21:51. | :21:53.
Middlesbrough were unlucky not to come away with a point when they met | :21:54. | :21:56.
former Manager Steve McClaren's Derby County. A warm handshake | :21:57. | :21:59.
between Boro's most successful manager and Chairman Steve Gibson | :22:00. | :22:01.
before kick`off. But new manager Aitor Karanka saw his side reduced | :22:02. | :22:05.
to ten men after half an hour when an unfortunate Curtis Main picked up | :22:06. | :22:09.
his second yellow card in ten minutes, the youngster distraught at | :22:10. | :22:12.
having to leave the field, and minutes later, Chris Martin put the | :22:13. | :22:15.
Rams ahead. Middlesbrough had a couple of chances before Mustafa | :22:16. | :22:18.
Carayol ran half the length of the pitch to see his cross eventually | :22:19. | :22:21.
converted by Dean Whitehead, his first goal for the club. On loan | :22:22. | :22:31.
keeper Shay Given kept Derby at bay until Connor Sammon snatched a last | :22:32. | :22:34.
minute victory as McClaren's success story at Pride Park continues. | :22:35. | :22:41.
Now, what is it about Gateshead FA Cup ties and extreme weather? The | :22:42. | :22:44.
club's first round replay against League Two leaders Oxford was called | :22:45. | :22:47.
off last month because of a waterlogged pitch. This evening, | :22:48. | :22:50.
they're hoping to defy the gales, with the winner travelling to | :22:51. | :22:53.
Wrexham for a televised second round tie this Monday. | :22:54. | :23:01.
Good luck to them ! Let's return to our main news now ` the severe | :23:02. | :23:05.
weather that's hit our region today. Many areas of the region remain | :23:06. | :23:08.
under water tonight, with homes and businesses evacuated and power off. | :23:09. | :23:12.
Middlesbrough town centre is one area that has been hit. Stuart | :23:13. | :23:15.
Whincup has just sent us this report. | :23:16. | :23:19.
This is the scene on one of Middlesbrough's busiest roads | :23:20. | :23:25.
tonight. Let me see `` show you the bus station. As you can hear, there | :23:26. | :23:29.
are sirens all around, the only side that would sound we are hearing. You | :23:30. | :23:33.
can see police cars and fire engines. Just behind me, or Newport | :23:34. | :23:38.
Road, one of the busiest roads in Middlesbrough, all of the lights | :23:39. | :23:43.
from the shops are out. I must they, shoppers we're spoken to, they are | :23:44. | :23:46.
in good humour. They are using phones and torches to see where they | :23:47. | :23:50.
are going. They are quite calm and relaxed. What we know is that just | :23:51. | :23:54.
after 5pm there was a massive power cut in Middlesbrough town centre, | :23:55. | :23:58.
and more than 10,000 homes have been affected. At this stage, we have no | :23:59. | :24:01.
indication when the power and lights will go back on. | :24:02. | :24:04.
And Stuart is back in BBC Tees, which thankfully has its own | :24:05. | :24:10.
generator. Stuart, what's the latest? | :24:11. | :24:16.
The situation is still the same. All those homes still without power in | :24:17. | :24:18.
Middlesbrough. The problem was called with the substation was | :24:19. | :24:22.
blooded. News coming in that all the traffic lights are out, shops and | :24:23. | :24:26.
businesses are still in complete darkness. Cleveland Police are | :24:27. | :24:29.
urging everyone to take care on the roads, and no trains will run | :24:30. | :24:30.
between Redcar and Middlesbrough. The line is. That is the news | :24:31. | :24:35.
tonight. That is how it is an Teeside. | :24:36. | :24:38.
Let's cross to Scarborough now and join Jamie Coulson. Jamie, what's | :24:39. | :24:42.
the situation there? Over the last couple of hours, | :24:43. | :24:46.
conditions have changed dramatically here in Scarborough. When we | :24:47. | :24:49.
arrived, it was blue skies and a flat C. Then, the tide turned, and | :24:50. | :24:53.
crashing waves came in that breach the sea wall and started lapping up | :24:54. | :24:58.
against the shop fronts here. If you look behind me, it is actually quite | :24:59. | :25:01.
difficult to believe that the tide is now on its way out. A number of | :25:02. | :25:05.
businesses here have been flooded, and there is concern tonight because | :25:06. | :25:09.
there was another high tide early in the morning. | :25:10. | :25:14.
Thank you very much. Let's see what the weather is going to be like, | :25:15. | :25:15.
then. Is it over now? then. Is it | :25:16. | :25:20.
Yes, it is easing now. Let's look at how windy it has been. A league | :25:21. | :25:23.
table of gusts across the north`east. It was the North | :25:24. | :25:27.
Pennines that sure the strongest gusts, 112 mph, lasting for just the | :25:28. | :25:34.
few seconds, and sustained winds on that fell where hurricane force, | :25:35. | :25:37.
over 90 miles an hour this morning. Some great weather photos from | :25:38. | :25:42.
viewers. The storm surge at Whitehaven. Thank you very much for | :25:43. | :25:47.
that, braving the high water there, the big waves. And the headline for | :25:48. | :25:53.
the rest of tonight, the winds will ease. It turns clear and it turns | :25:54. | :25:57.
frosty. Just one or two showers possible in the Western. One or two | :25:58. | :26:00.
of them will be wintry, but otherwise, dry and clear, starry | :26:01. | :26:04.
skies, allowing it to get really cold. The coldest night | :26:05. | :26:09.
winter so far, temperatures as low as `2 Celsius in towns and villages, | :26:10. | :26:13.
colder in the countryside, so a frosty start, and possibly ice after | :26:14. | :26:16.
the rain earlier. First thing tomorrow, a very different day. | :26:17. | :26:20.
Lighter winds and brighter skies, especially for North Yorkshire, and | :26:21. | :26:25.
in the north`east. In Cumbria by tea`time, more rain on the way, | :26:26. | :26:28.
although it is light and patchy as we talk North Yorkshire, it is cold, | :26:29. | :26:32.
despite the sunshine. Temperatures just one or two degrees above | :26:33. | :26:37.
freezing. Notice the winds, much lighter than they were today. If you | :26:38. | :26:41.
snow flurries over the North Pennines in the Cumbrian fells. | :26:42. | :26:44.
Here, not quite as cold as in the north`east, for Celsius, the high | :26:45. | :26:48.
30s in Fahrenheit. Let's take a look at the next couple of days. After | :26:49. | :26:52.
tomorrow, you will be very pleased to hear it as a calmer, milder | :26:53. | :26:56.
weekend. Mostly fine and dry across the north`east. It will be drizzly | :26:57. | :27:01.
for a time in the West on Saturday and Sunday. But the temperature is | :27:02. | :27:06.
nowhere near as cold as they were will be tomorrow. Seven or eight | :27:07. | :27:12.
Celsius to Saturday afternoon, and on Sunday, looking like the best day | :27:13. | :27:15.
of the weekend, as high as 11 Celsius, the low 50s in Fahrenheit, | :27:16. | :27:19.
so the best day of the two. Some bright spells breaking through in | :27:20. | :27:21.
the north`east as well. Rusty tonight, I've finally, those winds | :27:22. | :27:29.
easing. All eyes on that second high tide first thing tomorrow morning. | :27:30. | :27:34.
What a day that has been ! Thank you very much. You can get the latest | :27:35. | :27:37.
updates on your local radio stations, and Hannah is here with an | :27:38. | :27:41.
update would meet with the | :27:42. | :27:42. |
