three times faster than wages. That is all from BBC News at | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello and welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: The storms | :00:00. | :00:10.
keep on coming, flood warnings in place for coastal communities in | :00:11. | :00:12.
Cumbria. Also tonight, police release more | :00:13. | :00:15.
information about the death of a boxer at a New Year party. | :00:16. | :00:19.
Racing the tide, rescue services pull a woman from her car after it | :00:20. | :00:25.
lands on rocks at Whitley Bay. And The Railway Man, we meet the | :00:26. | :00:29.
stars of the new film about a Northumberland prisoner of war's | :00:30. | :00:33.
search for his tormentor. And in sport, Durham's Scott | :00:34. | :00:36.
Borthwick hopes to start the new year in style with an England debut | :00:37. | :00:40.
in tonight's final Ashes Test. But no New Year celebrations for our | :00:41. | :00:43.
football managers, who began 2014 with a whimper rather than a bang. | :00:44. | :00:57.
Coastal communities in Cumbria have been put on flood alert, as the next | :00:58. | :01:04.
storm system bears down on the west. The risk is at its highest tomorrow, | :01:05. | :01:07.
due to a combination of strong winds and very high tides. The Environment | :01:08. | :01:14.
Agency has issued a flooding warning for the Cumbrian coast running from | :01:15. | :01:18.
Gretna at the top of the Solway to St Bees Head. Mark McAlindon | :01:19. | :01:20.
reports. Storms from the Atlantic have | :01:21. | :01:23.
battered Britain in recent weeks, sometimes with tragic consequences. | :01:24. | :01:27.
One man was swept out to sea in Cornwall, while a woman drowned off | :01:28. | :01:32.
the coast in Devon. Here in Cumbria, there are warnings that coastal | :01:33. | :01:40.
flooding is likely tomorrow. We currently have two flood warnings in | :01:41. | :01:43.
place for the west coast of Cumbria, one from Gretna down to | :01:44. | :01:47.
select, and another down to St Bees Head, and the remainder of the coast | :01:48. | :01:51.
remains on flood alert, so the people in those areas need to take | :01:52. | :01:56.
immediate action to prepare for flooding and be aware of flooding. | :01:57. | :01:59.
In Whitehaven, people are braced for the worst, but it's hoped water | :02:00. | :02:02.
management in the harbour can help prevent flooding elsewhere. What we | :02:03. | :02:09.
can do is actually lower the level of water in the inner harbour, which | :02:10. | :02:13.
means that the run`off from the rest of the town and the surrounding | :02:14. | :02:18.
countryside can be absorbed into the inner harbour. So when the tide goes | :02:19. | :02:23.
out in the outer harbour, we can let water out again, shut the gates and | :02:24. | :02:28.
be prepared for the next heavy rainfall or tidal surge. In Cumbria, | :02:29. | :02:31.
the coastline is a popular place, and stormy seas make for a | :02:32. | :02:35.
spectacular sight. But the advice is it would be foolish to get too | :02:36. | :02:41.
close. The police income rear are | :02:42. | :02:44.
especially keen that people stay away from coastal paths and the | :02:45. | :02:50.
foreshore tomorrow if conditions that are predicted materialise. `` | :02:51. | :02:53.
the police in Cumbria. They believe there is an increased risk of people | :02:54. | :02:57.
being swept and it into the sea with tragic consequences. Rain is | :02:58. | :02:59.
predicted overnight, but strong winds and high tides will be at | :03:00. | :03:00.
their peak tomorrow lunchtime. Well, Hannah Bayman is with me now. | :03:01. | :03:14.
Hannah, why is there so much concern about our coastal communities in | :03:15. | :03:19.
Cumbria? It is a number of elements coming together, let's take a look | :03:20. | :03:22.
at this pressure sequence, a deep area of low pressure heading from | :03:23. | :03:26.
the west across the UK through tonight and into tomorrow morning. | :03:27. | :03:30.
That will cause very strong onshore winds, but it is combined with a | :03:31. | :03:34.
very high spring tides tomorrow lunchtime, that makes the weather | :03:35. | :03:40.
event that could cause coastal flooding. I will be back with a full | :03:41. | :03:44.
forecast later in the programme. The family of a former boxer who was | :03:45. | :03:48.
killed with an ice axe at a New Year's Eve party say they're | :03:49. | :03:51.
heartbroken and devastated by his death. 31`year`old Mark Denton from | :03:52. | :03:54.
Hartlepool was killed on Tuesday night despite brave attempts by | :03:55. | :03:57.
partygoers who desperately tried to save his life. One teenager and two | :03:58. | :04:01.
men in their twenties have been arrested on suspicion of murder, and | :04:02. | :04:04.
are being questioned by detectives. Stuart Whincup reports. | :04:05. | :04:13.
Mark Denton has been one of the country's best amateur boxers and | :04:14. | :04:17.
was well`known in Hartlepool. He had been at a party here when he was | :04:18. | :04:20.
attacked with an ice axe in front of guests. He died a short time later. | :04:21. | :04:26.
For a second day, forensics officers have been at the house while friends | :04:27. | :04:31.
continued to leave flowers outside. He was a lovely person, he was | :04:32. | :04:36.
dedicated, he put as much effort in as any boxer I have had in the gym. | :04:37. | :04:42.
A lot of my other boxers fed off that, and it is just tragic, like | :04:43. | :04:46.
you say, what has happened. He was the heart and soul of the party as | :04:47. | :04:51.
well, he would get on with anybody. A 17`year`old male and two men in | :04:52. | :04:55.
their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Detectives are | :04:56. | :04:59.
offering support to guests at the party who witnessed the brutal | :05:00. | :05:03.
attack. A number of people were trying to help him, but people were | :05:04. | :05:07.
in a state of chaos and fear, trying to leave the address. Police have | :05:08. | :05:11.
tried to speak to those at the time, but I have no doubt that there | :05:12. | :05:16.
will be people who have left who may have very significant information | :05:17. | :05:19.
into this inquiry. Hundreds of tributes have been added to a | :05:20. | :05:23.
Facebook page set up in memory of the former boxer. Late this | :05:24. | :05:28.
afternoon, his family released a statement saying they were | :05:29. | :05:30.
absolutely heartbroken and devastated to lose him in such a | :05:31. | :05:35.
tragic way. They said he was a much loved son, brother and uncle. He | :05:36. | :05:39.
will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, they added. | :05:40. | :05:50.
More news now. TheyA man found with stab wounds in Carlisle is fighting | :05:51. | :05:56.
for life in hospital. stab wounds in Carlisle is fighting | :05:57. | :06:04.
were called to an address in Raffles Avenue early yesterday and found the | :06:05. | :06:06.
23`year`old with serious injuries. He was taken to the Cumberland | :06:07. | :06:08.
Infirmary and is now at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. Eight men, | :06:09. | :06:10.
whose ages ranges from 23 to still being questioned. | :06:11. | :06:16.
Police say they're hoping someone returning from a Christmas break | :06:17. | :06:19.
might have the clue that will lead them to a missing Northumberland | :06:20. | :06:22.
woman. It's two weeks since 65`year`old Janis Hall was last seen | :06:23. | :06:25.
after leaving her home in the village of Catton. It's possible | :06:26. | :06:28.
somebody might have seen her after that, but because they've been out | :06:29. | :06:31.
of the region, they don't realise there is a search under way. Police | :06:32. | :06:34.
also say they've been overwhelmed with offers of help from the public. | :06:35. | :06:39.
Everyone who we have spoken to has been falling over themselves to do | :06:40. | :06:43.
what ever they can, we had the Salvation Army out of searching on | :06:44. | :06:46.
Monday, and obviously we give them guidance as to what they should and | :06:47. | :06:50.
shouldn't do, but everyone is very concerned and want to come home. | :06:51. | :06:55.
Equally, the family over Christmas and New Year, it has been a | :06:56. | :06:59.
difficult time. We are all out there looking for her. | :07:00. | :07:01.
Investigations are continuing after a car crashed through railings and | :07:02. | :07:04.
landed on its roof near St Mary's Lighthouse at Whitley Bay. The | :07:05. | :07:07.
emergency services had to free an injured woman from the vehicle as | :07:08. | :07:11.
the tide moved in around them. Amy Lea reports. | :07:12. | :07:13.
This was the dramatic scene just after midnight in Whitley Bay. The | :07:14. | :07:20.
car you can see here crashed through railings at the foot of St Mary's | :07:21. | :07:23.
Lighthouse south car park and onto the beach below. One of the main | :07:24. | :07:29.
concerns for rescuers last night was not only the cold, the wind and the | :07:30. | :07:33.
dark, but also the position of the car, around about here, and the | :07:34. | :07:37.
advancing tide, which meant water was lapping around the car. Dave | :07:38. | :07:40.
Bell, a captain with the Tynemouth Volunteer life Brigade, was there | :07:41. | :07:43.
helped by the police, the fire brigade and paramedics. We were on a | :07:44. | :07:54.
rising tide, it was on its way in, and at one point the waves were | :07:55. | :07:58.
splashing on the back of the car. Obviously, we are in a situation in | :07:59. | :08:02.
this location where the tide can run around behind us, so we have to | :08:03. | :08:07.
ensure that the rescuers were kept safe. The woman was the only person | :08:08. | :08:11.
in the car at the time and suffered spinal and pelvis interviews. She | :08:12. | :08:13.
was released from hospital earlier this afternoon. The paramedics and | :08:14. | :08:22.
the Fire Brigade actually put her on to a spinal board and recovered her | :08:23. | :08:28.
from the car. They packaged her up, and then we physically carried her | :08:29. | :08:31.
along the beach, up the stairs at the far end, trying not to fall in | :08:32. | :08:35.
the pool at the bottom of the stairs. And then up to the waiting | :08:36. | :08:39.
ambulance. Police say they are continuing their investigations into | :08:40. | :08:42.
how the car came to smash through the barrier and onto the sand and | :08:43. | :08:45.
are appealing for any witnesses. But they have praised the work of the | :08:46. | :08:49.
rescue teams, who say this is one lady who has had a very lucky escape | :08:50. | :08:58.
indeed. Police searching for a missing | :08:59. | :09:01.
mother of three who is believed to have been murdered say they'll | :09:02. | :09:04.
continue the hunt, as they did for the Moors murder victims. | :09:05. | :09:07.
25`year`old Rania Alayed vanished in early June, but extensive searches | :09:08. | :09:10.
of around the A19 near Thirsk in North Yorkshire have drawn a blank. | :09:11. | :09:15.
Now police say it's possible Rania's body may have been moved. Julie | :09:16. | :09:19.
Smith reports. Since last July, this stretch of A19 | :09:20. | :09:23.
near Thirsk has been at the centre of a cross`border police | :09:24. | :09:28.
investigation. Rania Alayed is thought to have been taken in a | :09:29. | :09:32.
white camper van in the early hours of June eighth from Manchester to | :09:33. | :09:35.
this area, where police believe her body was buried or concealed. Police | :09:36. | :09:41.
think the camper van pulled over on a northbound lay`by of the A19. But | :09:42. | :09:46.
extensive searches of land, including the use of forensic | :09:47. | :09:49.
experts and military expertise, have drawn a blank. It took us three or | :09:50. | :10:00.
four weeks before we knew Rania was dead, from the time that she was | :10:01. | :10:04.
killed. Now, we believe her body was brought here, and the question I got | :10:05. | :10:08.
to ask is, as she be moved within that period? You might have seen | :10:09. | :10:14.
somebody in one of these fields, these Labour eyes, something | :10:15. | :10:16.
suspicious, and we would like to hear from those people. `` these | :10:17. | :10:21.
lay`bys. Today Rania's uncle, Ali Aydi, was shown around the lay`bys | :10:22. | :10:24.
where police have been searching. He didn't speak to the press but in a | :10:25. | :10:27.
statement appealed to anyone with information to come forward. We have | :10:28. | :10:37.
had dogs out, as well as line searches, digging holes just to try | :10:38. | :10:44.
and get any gases off. But we have not found Rania. Look at the Moors | :10:45. | :10:48.
murderer is, we will not rest, we will revisit and revisit. By no | :10:49. | :10:52.
means is this finished, this part of it is finished, this had surge of | :10:53. | :10:58.
these lay`bys. Two men have been charged with the murder and one with | :10:59. | :11:03.
perverting the course of justice. The cost to the National Health | :11:04. | :11:06.
Service of patients missing appointments is running to tens of | :11:07. | :11:09.
millions of pounds, according to figures out today. Six North East | :11:10. | :11:12.
health trusts, including Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle, say 600 | :11:13. | :11:15.
people a day failed to turn up at hospitals last year, at an estimated | :11:16. | :11:23.
cost of ?24m. NHS managers also highlighted the knock`on effect on | :11:24. | :11:30.
waiting lists. Some of us call it the hole in the | :11:31. | :11:34.
wall, others the cash machine. Either way, it's often the easiest | :11:35. | :11:37.
way to get your money. Unless, that is, you live in Chopwell near | :11:38. | :11:40.
Gateshead. The village's only free cash machine has been broken for | :11:41. | :11:43.
weeks. Now one local supermarket says unless it's fixed, they could | :11:44. | :11:46.
go out of business. Here's our political correspondent, Mark | :11:47. | :11:50.
Denten. Chopwell, and a local convenience | :11:51. | :11:56.
store. If you have got any money left after Christmas and New Year, | :11:57. | :11:59.
this place as the only free cash machine in the village. Or not so | :12:00. | :12:03.
conveniently. Because the blank screen tells it all, it's out of | :12:04. | :12:07.
action and has been for weeks, and Lorraine, who runs the shop, says | :12:08. | :12:10.
that's threatening her business.And ironically the shop is also a | :12:11. | :12:13.
business customer of Chopwell's Lloyds Bank. We have lost 50% of our | :12:14. | :12:17.
turnover in the last few weeks. People are not spending the money, | :12:18. | :12:22.
so we don't have the cash flow, and we are very, very close to running | :12:23. | :12:28.
out of money. How long have you got? Probably five days. And for | :12:29. | :12:30.
customers, frustration. It is the only place | :12:31. | :12:36.
around here that has been free cash machine. I am on benefits, and I | :12:37. | :12:40.
cannot afford to keep taking money out when it is costing ?1.85 a time | :12:41. | :12:47.
to get the money. Ironically, the shop is a business customer of the | :12:48. | :12:51.
local Lloyds bank. Just last week, they ran out of money themselves | :12:52. | :12:55.
because obviously people cannot get the money from our cash machine, so | :12:56. | :12:59.
they have gone to the bank and they ran out of money, so they asked us | :13:00. | :13:04.
to pay our takings into give money out. | :13:05. | :13:07.
The local MP says a bank still nearly a third owned by the taxpayer | :13:08. | :13:11.
should do better. It is about public money, we have given them any to get | :13:12. | :13:16.
back on an even keel after the recklessness of the last decade and | :13:17. | :13:19.
yet they are treating people like this, ludicrous, it is not on. | :13:20. | :13:22.
Lloyds Bank say they've had problems with intermittent telecoms issues | :13:23. | :13:25.
and will replace certain parts today. | :13:26. | :13:31.
Still to come tonight, Dawn will be here with the sports news. And we'll | :13:32. | :13:39.
hear from the family of this loving couple who died within hours of each | :13:40. | :13:42.
other over Christmas but left this as their legacy. | :13:43. | :13:47.
Next week, The Railway Man opens in cinemas across the country. Starring | :13:48. | :13:50.
Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth, it's the true story of a Northumberland | :13:51. | :13:56.
man, Eric Lomax. In 1942, Eric was sent to a Japanese prisoner`of`war | :13:57. | :13:59.
camp, where he was regularly tortured. To help ease his suffering | :14:00. | :14:04.
from post`traumatic stress, his wife Patti helped him track down and | :14:05. | :14:09.
confront his tormentor. Our reporter Sharon Barbour has been to meet the | :14:10. | :14:13.
stars of the film, and to talk to Patti in her Berwick home for this | :14:14. | :14:21.
Look North Report. Eric Lomax from Berwick in | :14:22. | :14:23.
Northumberland was a World War II prisoner. He was forced to work on | :14:24. | :14:29.
the Thai Burma railway and was horrifically tortured. His book, The | :14:30. | :14:32.
Railway Man, has now been turned into a movie with Hollywood stars. | :14:33. | :14:42.
That is it, sir. Bombing Germany 24 hours a day! His experiences lead to | :14:43. | :14:47.
decades of nightmares and post`traumatic stress disorder but | :14:48. | :14:49.
then he learned one of his tormentors was still alive, and he | :14:50. | :14:55.
set off to confront him. I suspected, and Eric told me later, | :14:56. | :15:00.
that I had been correct that he really wish to have his revenge. The | :15:01. | :15:05.
meeting was filmed by a documentary maker. | :15:06. | :15:11.
You are very well, that is very good. I am very sorry, we have done | :15:12. | :15:18.
very wrong things for you. It is kind of you to say so. In the film, | :15:19. | :15:26.
the older Eric Lomax is played by Colin Firth, his wife by Nicole | :15:27. | :15:31.
Kidman, huge stars who spent time in the Berwick home. By sheer | :15:32. | :15:37.
coincidence, there was a big picture of Colin and his wife on the front | :15:38. | :15:42.
page of the Daily Telegraph. Eric realised, he turned to me and said, | :15:43. | :15:46.
I think we have got somebody famous here! After meeting Eric and | :15:47. | :15:54.
learning about how much he had suffered, the role was the hardest | :15:55. | :15:57.
Colin Firth says he had ever taken on. I have rarely felt quite so out | :15:58. | :16:05.
of my depth, or as inadequate to capturing and experience, just | :16:06. | :16:10.
because it is so immense. My own limitations as an actor, combined | :16:11. | :16:15.
with the limitations of film`making, 90 minutes to get a | :16:16. | :16:19.
fragment of this, were all pretty overwhelming. | :16:20. | :16:27.
To build such a railway would not be an act of engineering but barbarity. | :16:28. | :16:31.
Playing the young Eric is a rising star, Jeremy Irvine. It is a role I | :16:32. | :16:36.
have not quite got over yet. I know you are close to his wife, | :16:37. | :16:42.
supporting each other. 100%! I have always said, you know, if she didn't | :16:43. | :16:46.
like it, all of this is for nothing. She is one of the most remarkable | :16:47. | :16:51.
women I have met. I am finding it very moving. Of course, the book by | :16:52. | :16:55.
Eric Lomax, The Railway Man, now made into this film, a story of | :16:56. | :17:02.
survival, a story of courage, but most of all a story of forgiveness. | :17:03. | :17:06.
And already veterans invited to see the film ahead of its release have | :17:07. | :17:10.
begun to share their experiences. I had the job, amongst others, to drag | :17:11. | :17:22.
out the corpses. It was the worst thing I ever did. Have you told many | :17:23. | :17:29.
people about your story? No, no, no! I think he would have felt immensely | :17:30. | :17:33.
proud that he got the message across, not for himself, but for the | :17:34. | :17:37.
other people that died on that railway. 90,000 people died. Eric | :17:38. | :17:43.
forgave and said he would not forget his cruel torture. He died last | :17:44. | :17:48.
year, but his story now lives on, a story of letting go of their hatred. | :17:49. | :17:58.
EZ, sometimes the hating has to stop, and that, I think, summed up | :17:59. | :18:02.
the man, and he has that inscribed on his headstone. The Railway Man | :18:03. | :18:08.
opens in cinemas on January the tent. | :18:09. | :18:15.
`` January the tent. An amazing story about an amazing | :18:16. | :18:18.
man. And the actors Colin Firth and Jeremy Irvine will be at a special | :18:19. | :18:21.
screening of The Railway Man in Berwick tomorrow evening ahead of | :18:22. | :18:24.
the film's general release in the UK on the tenth of January. | :18:25. | :18:28.
Now, here's a railway story of a very different kind. The | :18:29. | :18:32.
granddaughter of an elderly couple who died within hours of each other | :18:33. | :18:35.
over Christmas has told Look North they've left a living legacy which | :18:36. | :18:38.
has brought pleasure to millions. Tom Salmon was the founder of the | :18:39. | :18:42.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and his wife Erica is also credited with | :18:43. | :18:46.
much of its success. Joe Inwood has been to speak to their family. | :18:47. | :18:51.
They called in the father of the railway, 1969, this is Tom Salmon | :18:52. | :18:56.
signing the contract that laid the groundwork for its foundation. And | :18:57. | :19:02.
here he is just a few months ago, celebrating the 40th birthday of the | :19:03. | :19:06.
North Yorkshire Moors railway. At his side, his wife of 66 years, | :19:07. | :19:11.
arrogant. This project was his inspiration, and a huge part of | :19:12. | :19:16.
their lives. From the 1960s until the end of their lives, it played a | :19:17. | :19:20.
very big part in our lives. It was his vision to save the railway from | :19:21. | :19:26.
the Beeching cuts. My Nano was the greatest support to him, and he | :19:27. | :19:30.
always said that, so to both of them it was extremely important. And | :19:31. | :19:34.
important for this part of Yorkshire. His vision eventually | :19:35. | :19:39.
turned into the UK's most successful heritage railway, carrying hundreds | :19:40. | :19:43.
of thousands of passengers and contributing millions to the local | :19:44. | :19:54.
economy. Tom's legacy is the railway, and the effect it has had | :19:55. | :19:57.
of thousands of peoples lives, it will never die and he will always be | :19:58. | :20:02.
with us. Tom and Eric had been unwell for some time and both passed | :20:03. | :20:05.
away over Christmas less than 24 hours aboard. Without them, this | :20:06. | :20:10.
railway would not exist, the jobs, the tourism, the history. To mark | :20:11. | :20:15.
all that, red wreaths for the father of this railway. | :20:16. | :20:26.
A happy couple indeed. Time for the sport now. Not a great set of | :20:27. | :20:32.
results for the New Year. A pretty miserable start all around! | :20:33. | :20:35.
Not a happy start to 2014 for our Premier League clubs. Newcastle lost | :20:36. | :20:38.
their second match running, as well as key players to injury and | :20:39. | :20:41.
suspension. And if Sunderland fans thought the great escape was on, | :20:42. | :20:45.
they may be thinking twice about that this evening. Mark Tulip's | :20:46. | :20:48.
report begins at the Stadium of Light. | :20:49. | :20:49.
The optimism of youth. And that young man will have enjoyed | :20:50. | :20:52.
Sunderland's bright opening in one of those games against fellow | :20:53. | :20:55.
strugglers they really needed to win. They certainly need Steven | :20:56. | :20:58.
Fletcher to find his shooting boots soon. And the Black Cats could do | :20:59. | :21:01.
without the likes of Lee Cattermole committing early howlers like this | :21:02. | :21:04.
one. A gift for Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor, who scored the | :21:05. | :21:08.
only goal on Wearside 14 months ago. It could have been worse without | :21:09. | :21:11.
some sharp keeping from Vito Mannone. And even though there was a | :21:12. | :21:14.
sense of injustice that Fabio Borini's knock`down for Emanuele | :21:15. | :21:17.
Giaccherini to slot home was ruled offside, the truth is that Villa had | :21:18. | :21:20.
most of the better chances. One step forward over Christmas, two steps | :21:21. | :21:24.
back at New Year. No wonder Gus Poyet is fed up. | :21:25. | :21:31.
Unfortunately, the mistake was against us, and after that too much | :21:32. | :21:39.
in attention, too much nerves, too many people in a hurry. It wasn't to | :21:40. | :21:42.
be. It was also a pretty miserable day, | :21:43. | :21:46.
in every sense, at the Hawthorns, not too many treasured memories on | :21:47. | :21:49.
those smartphones. Both Newcastle and West Brom were guilty of | :21:50. | :21:52.
spurning chances when it looked easier to score. But this game | :21:53. | :21:55.
wasn't destined to be goalless. Yes, Mathieu Debuchy got the ball, but | :21:56. | :21:59.
his reckless challenge cost him a red card which | :22:00. | :21:59.
Magpies did nearly hold until the end. But Tim Krul up`ended Vydra to | :22:00. | :22:05.
concede the penalty that Saido Berahino converted, to leave the | :22:06. | :22:08.
Magpies losing ground on the European places and losing key men. | :22:09. | :22:14.
It is a huge blow for us, because he has been to reflect for us, and | :22:15. | :22:19.
there was no malice in the tackle. But by the rules as they state, you | :22:20. | :22:23.
cannot do that, and that did change the game, and we were getting tired | :22:24. | :22:28.
and losing bodies, we lost Coloccini to an injury, so a tough day for us. | :22:29. | :22:31.
Fabricio Coloccini's knee injury could, it's feared, sideline him for | :22:32. | :22:36.
up to six weeks. Unfortunately, there wasn't much for | :22:37. | :22:39.
fans of our other football teams to celebrate yesterday either, on what | :22:40. | :22:43.
turned out to be a pretty dismal New Year's Day. | :22:44. | :22:46.
It turned out to be another frustrating afternoon for | :22:47. | :22:48.
Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka and one that Bolton defender Zat Knight | :22:49. | :22:52.
would probably rather forget. In a nightmare first half, two awful | :22:53. | :22:54.
mistakes allowed first Mustapha Carayol and then Curtis Main to put | :22:55. | :23:03.
Boro two up inside 20 minutes. But the joy was short`lived, Alex | :23:04. | :23:05.
Baptiste curling a lovely shot passed an outstretched Shay Given to | :23:06. | :23:10.
reduce the deficit at the break. A fabulous save from the on`loan | :23:11. | :23:13.
keeper kept this one out, but Middlesbrough missed the chance to | :23:14. | :23:15.
claim a fourth consecutive Championship win when not for the | :23:16. | :23:18.
first time this season they succumbed to a late equaliser. | :23:19. | :23:23.
Two second`half goals gave League One strugglers Crewe the upper hand | :23:24. | :23:26.
against Carlisle, and in dreadful conditions Tom Lawrence scored a | :23:27. | :23:29.
consolation goal with this great free kick, but the home side | :23:30. | :23:32.
survived a late barrage from the Blues to claim all three points. | :23:33. | :23:37.
Conditions not much better at Hartlepool, where there was a shock | :23:38. | :23:40.
result for Colin Cooper's side in League Two as Bury put three | :23:41. | :23:43.
unanswered goals past them at Victoria Park. | :23:44. | :23:47.
But York City provided some New Year cheer. They moved three points clear | :23:48. | :23:51.
of the relegation zone with a 1`0 win over Morecambe, thanks to a Ryan | :23:52. | :23:55.
Jarvis goal, their first win since October. | :23:56. | :23:59.
It's been a miserable winter for England's cricketers, but our region | :24:00. | :24:01.
could be celebrating another success story tonight. Durham all`rounder | :24:02. | :24:05.
Scott Borthwick is tipped to make his Test debut in the final match of | :24:06. | :24:09.
the Ashes series in Sydney. The 23`year`old would be the county's | :24:10. | :24:13.
latest product to make it to the England team, following hot on the | :24:14. | :24:16.
heels of his Durham team`mate Ben Stokes. England may be heading for a | :24:17. | :24:19.
5`0 whitewash, but the youngster believes he can cope with the | :24:20. | :24:31.
pressure. I hope so, I have never played Test cricket before, but just | :24:32. | :24:35.
being in the squad and being on the DDF really excites me, I am thrilled | :24:36. | :24:41.
to be here. We are trying to do our best to get a good win in Sydney and | :24:42. | :24:44.
finished on a high. They could be five or and Yorkshire | :24:45. | :24:49.
players in the starting line`up tonight, hopefully a chance to get | :24:50. | :24:53.
one back. Time to hear more about those storms. | :24:54. | :25:04.
I thought I would start with a picture to cheer us up, a Viking | :25:05. | :25:11.
braving the weather at Whitley Bay! Definitely not beach weather | :25:12. | :25:13.
tonight, strong winds developing across the region, staying very | :25:14. | :25:17.
strong tomorrow, a weather warning for strong winds in force from | :25:18. | :25:21.
midnight tonight for Cumbria until midnight tomorrow night. Overnight | :25:22. | :25:25.
tonight, dry at first but it will not last. Through the early hours, | :25:26. | :25:30.
showers splashing in from the West, widespread by dawn, accompanied by | :25:31. | :25:34.
strong and gusty south`westerly winds. Those winds up over 25 mph | :25:35. | :25:39.
quite easily along the Camry and Coast, with top temperatures | :25:40. | :25:46.
overnight of around four or five Celsius. `` the Cumbrian coast. | :25:47. | :25:51.
First thing tomorrow, a miserable morning rush hour for those of us | :25:52. | :25:55.
who have returned to work, strong winds and spells of rain spreading | :25:56. | :26:00.
in from the south and west, falling as snow over the North Pennines and | :26:01. | :26:05.
the GBA tills. The winds by tea`time as strong as 25 mph for parts of the | :26:06. | :26:12.
north`east. Gusts of up to 40 or 50 mph. Sustained wind speeds could be | :26:13. | :26:23.
even higher in some spots. It will be feeling absolutely miserable out | :26:24. | :26:28.
there with continued strong winds, almost touching gale force in | :26:29. | :26:33.
Cumbria, even at tea`time tomorrow. Those are the sustained wind speeds | :26:34. | :26:36.
of five minutes or more, so the gusts lasting just a few seconds | :26:37. | :26:42.
could be up to 60 or 70 mph. Very, very unpleasant conditions there! | :26:43. | :26:46.
Taking a look at the big picture, the pressure sequence, that locals | :26:47. | :26:50.
in the wet weather will sweep away to the north, but it stays | :26:51. | :26:55.
changeable over the next few days. Prior art Saturday, but it will not | :26:56. | :27:00.
last. `` dryer on Saturday. Yet another system arrives at the | :27:01. | :27:04.
weekend, bringing more wintry weather. Over the next few days, | :27:05. | :27:09.
let's take a look in detail at the forecast. Dryer and brighter for a | :27:10. | :27:13.
time across much of Cumbria on Saturday, but turning wet and windy | :27:14. | :27:17.
on Sunday, very similar in the north`east, in fact a little bit | :27:18. | :27:22.
less in the way of dry weather here on Saturday, especially around | :27:23. | :27:26.
lunchtime. It is tomorrow lunchtime where those tides will be the | :27:27. | :27:30.
highest in Cumbria, all eyes on the coasts. | :27:31. | :27:33.
And he will bring us an update at 10:25pm. It is the first programme | :27:34. | :27:41.
with us all back, so can we say happy New Year? Happy New Year! | :27:42. | :27:44. |
