Hello. Welcome to Tuesday's Look North. In tonight's headlines: New | :00:00. | :00:10.
revelations of brutality at a former young offenders centre. | :00:11. | :00:14.
More than 100 people contact police. A damning report into a plane crash | :00:15. | :00:17.
that left a Sunderland co`pilot and five other people dead. Do never | :00:18. | :00:30.
supposed to be all that flight. Police step up their search for a | :00:31. | :00:34.
missing York student. We'll have the latest. | :00:35. | :00:37.
And wreckless driving. The pair who reached speeds of up to 144mph but | :00:38. | :00:40.
avoided jail. In football, new strikers are on the | :00:41. | :00:43.
way to both Sunderland and Newcastle. | :00:44. | :00:46.
But the Magpies' star man is on his way back to France ` and the fans | :00:47. | :00:49.
aren't happy. More than 100 people have now | :00:50. | :01:06.
contacted Durham police following yesterday's new revelations of | :01:07. | :01:08.
brutality at a former young offenders prison near Consett. The | :01:09. | :01:13.
BBC's Inside Out programme heard from some of the dozens of men who | :01:14. | :01:17.
were sexually and physically abused at Medomsley Detention Centre in the | :01:18. | :01:22.
1970s and 80s. Today, more came forward. Chris Jackson reports. You | :01:23. | :01:27.
may find some of the detail in his report distressing. I cried. | :01:28. | :01:39.
Paul Davidson's reaction to last night's Inside Out about the abuse | :01:40. | :01:46.
scandal at Medomsley. He was sent there as a teenager back in 1974 as | :01:47. | :01:50.
punishment for being caught in a stolen car. I was attacked 59 days | :01:51. | :02:02.
in a row. Some of the days I was hurt more than once. The worst | :02:03. | :02:07.
violence Paul saw was in the prison gym. He was screaming at him and | :02:08. | :02:20.
kicking him. And he witnessed other inmates self | :02:21. | :02:23.
harming to dry and escape the brutal regime. They were saying they were | :02:24. | :02:38.
going to break his leg. I heard the screams. | :02:39. | :02:43.
Paul is just one of more than 100 people who have come forward | :02:44. | :02:49.
overnight. They had no control over what was happening. There was | :02:50. | :02:54.
physical abuse, sexual abuse and mental abuse. | :02:55. | :02:55.
Victims are offered counselling to deal with trauma they may have kept | :02:56. | :03:03.
secret for all their adult lives. The National Society for the | :03:04. | :03:06.
Prevention of Cruelty to Children is also part of the inquiry team. | :03:07. | :03:18.
A lot of them have said it is like a hand grenades being thrown into | :03:19. | :03:27.
their brain. It is important for those victims. | :03:28. | :03:39.
It sends a very clear message that this will be taken seriously. | :03:40. | :03:44.
Detectives will follow up the new cases over the next few days. The | :03:45. | :03:48.
inquiry is still at an early stage and any potential criminal action | :03:49. | :03:51.
isn't expected for many months to come. | :03:52. | :03:56.
There is a helpline for anyone who has been affected by the issues | :03:57. | :04:00.
raised ` call the BBC Action line on 08000 566 065 or go to website | :04:01. | :04:11.
bbc.co.uk/actionline. Police investigating the alleged | :04:12. | :04:14.
sexual exploitation of women and girls on Tyneside have now made 21 | :04:15. | :04:19.
arrests. 15 of those have now been bailed pending further enquiries | :04:20. | :04:22.
with an additional six held today on suspicion of conspiracy to rape. | :04:23. | :04:26.
Searches have continued at homes Northumbria Police won't say how | :04:27. | :04:31.
many potential victims they've identified. | :04:32. | :04:37.
A highly critical report was released today into an air crash | :04:38. | :04:40.
which left a Sunderland co`pilot and five others dead. It happened as the | :04:41. | :04:46.
small passenger plane attempted to land in thick fog at Cork Airport in | :04:47. | :04:52.
Ireland in 2011. The list of mistakes and problems highlighted by | :04:53. | :04:55.
the Irish Air Accident Investigation Unit goes on over more than 200 | :04:56. | :04:58.
pages. But how about these for starters? | :04:59. | :05:02.
Co`pilot Andrew Cantle had exceeded his safe working hours limit and so | :05:03. | :05:05.
was suffering from tiredness and fatigue. | :05:06. | :05:08.
The aircraft commander, the pilot, hadn't been properly trained. | :05:09. | :05:12.
There were mechanical problems with the aircraft. And due consideration | :05:13. | :05:16.
hadn't been paid to the weather conditions. Our Chief Reporter Chris | :05:17. | :05:22.
Stewart has the story. Andrew Cantle was 27. A fully | :05:23. | :05:27.
qualified pilot ` but new to the Belfast to Cork service. He died | :05:28. | :05:32.
with his captain, Spanish pilot Jordi Lopez, and four passengers. | :05:33. | :05:37.
Three times he'd tried to land ` on the last dry the captain took the | :05:38. | :05:41.
engine controls, for some reason putting the power into reverse. It | :05:42. | :05:47.
was catastrophic. But then more facts started to emerge. Lack of | :05:48. | :05:49.
training, questionable scheduling, maintenance problems, tired pilots. | :05:50. | :05:55.
Today Andrew's dad revealed something else. | :05:56. | :05:59.
The reason Andrew was flying on flight was because one of the pilots | :06:00. | :06:08.
had to go back to Spain. They had ran out of pilots. That is how bad | :06:09. | :06:16.
they were. They did not know who was flying. The Irish investigators say | :06:17. | :06:22.
it's the most complex inquiry they've had to handle, and eleven | :06:23. | :06:25.
separate recommendations will now go to aviation authorities. Manx2.com | :06:26. | :06:28.
from the Isle of Man, was the public face of the operation. It went out | :06:29. | :06:33.
of existence without ever apologising. I had to ring them up | :06:34. | :06:48.
to ask. Andrew Cantle squeezed a lot into life. He was also a lifeboatman | :06:49. | :06:52.
` at just 17, he became the RNLI's youngest helmsman. His dad says he's | :06:53. | :06:57.
not interested in blaming anyone for his loss ` but instead simply wants | :06:58. | :07:00.
small airlines to pay attention to the report into his death. | :07:01. | :07:29.
Two men who drove at more than twice the maximum national speed limit | :07:30. | :07:32.
have avoided going to prison. 21`year old Daniel Richardson and | :07:33. | :07:33.
James Burrow, who's one lunchtime by a police speed | :07:34. | :07:38.
camera doing 144mph on the A19 in North Yorkshire. Adrian Pitches | :07:39. | :07:40.
reports. This is dangerous driving. 144 mph | :07:41. | :07:43.
down the A19 on a Saturday lunchtime. | :07:44. | :07:46.
For North Yorkshire police, who filmed the cars on a mobile speed | :07:47. | :07:54.
camera, it was unprecedented. Never before have we had to the Eccles | :07:55. | :07:57.
travelling so close together on an dual carriageway. `` have we had two | :07:58. | :08:06.
vehicles. Richardson, in the lead car, and | :08:07. | :08:10.
Burrows had been go karting in Middlesbrough. They were speeding | :08:11. | :08:14.
home to Leeds in convoy down the A19 near Crathorne when they were | :08:15. | :08:16.
filmed. Such dangerous driving could have | :08:17. | :08:19.
meant a prison sentence but the men, neither of whom had any previous | :08:20. | :08:26.
convictions, just avoided jail. The chairman of the bench said this | :08:27. | :08:31.
was adolescent and selfish behaviour that could have caused the talent | :08:32. | :08:38.
is. `` that could have caused fatalities. They were disqualified | :08:39. | :08:47.
from driving for three years and ordered to do community service. | :08:48. | :08:57.
Police are continuing to search for Megan Roberts. She was last seen on | :08:58. | :09:10.
Thursday. The search for Megan Roberts has | :09:11. | :09:17.
moved to the river. 30 officers are working on the case. She has not | :09:18. | :09:25.
been seen since two o'clock on Thursday morning. She was at this | :09:26. | :09:33.
nightclub. It is near the river. That is where today's searches have | :09:34. | :09:38.
been concentrated. The search teams have been here most of the afternoon | :09:39. | :09:42.
rain stating we searching the river bank. The reason they are here is | :09:43. | :09:50.
that this is the last place Megan Roberts was seen before she | :09:51. | :09:56.
disappeared. Police say CCTV footage shows Megan Roberts leaving a | :09:57. | :10:02.
nightclub and walking to the South side of the bridge. Then the trail | :10:03. | :10:15.
goes cold. This group was seen as short time later on the other side | :10:16. | :10:20.
of the bridge. At that time Megan Roberts was not with the group. | :10:21. | :10:26.
Students have been quick to get the news out. | :10:27. | :10:33.
We have been sharing the story on Facebook. We are trying to make | :10:34. | :10:42.
students are where to trigger anybody's memories that might have | :10:43. | :10:50.
seen something on Wednesday night. Megan Roberts was studying at | :10:51. | :11:00.
university and also had a job. All the staff are making it public | :11:01. | :11:05.
on Facebook to dry and make everyone aware and keep an eye out for her. | :11:06. | :11:10.
`` to dry and make everyone aware. What is the latest on the police | :11:11. | :11:29.
investigation? We are on the South side of the | :11:30. | :11:33.
bridge, the last place that Megan Roberts was seen on CCTV. Our | :11:34. | :11:43.
understanding is that she could have taken another route home. She could | :11:44. | :11:52.
have gone a third way back towards the city centre. Many fast food | :11:53. | :11:58.
outlets would have been open at that time. Benji would have had to go | :11:59. | :12:04.
through the city centre and again she would have been picked up on | :12:05. | :12:05.
Canada. `` then she would have had As you may have seen, Britain's | :12:06. | :12:22.
economy grew by 1.9 per cent last year according to figures published | :12:23. | :12:27.
today. The Chancellor, George Osborne, said it showed the | :12:28. | :12:29.
Government's long`term economic plan was working. Labour, though said it | :12:30. | :12:34.
wasn't a recovery built to last. But what's the economic picture here in | :12:35. | :12:38.
the North? Does it mirror the national one? Our Business | :12:39. | :12:43.
Correspondent Ian Reeve reports. Catherine and Richard know about | :12:44. | :12:49.
recession. They set up their Consett Popcorn Company in 2008, just as it | :12:50. | :12:52.
hit. And so they should know if things are getting better. Our | :12:53. | :12:59.
business started picking up in April last year. There was a noticeable | :13:00. | :13:08.
trend. Our sales in November and December far exceeded previous | :13:09. | :13:15.
months. January has been one of the best months we have had. Like many | :13:16. | :13:18.
businesses that think the worst is over and the economy much improved, | :13:19. | :13:21.
this one's thinking of expanding. And it's not the only one. We are | :13:22. | :13:28.
looking for a larger premises. Six months ago it would have been | :13:29. | :13:32.
relatively easy to find one on the same site, but now it is virtually | :13:33. | :13:35.
civil and we're to look further afield. `` virtually impossible. | :13:36. | :13:46.
Turnover here could hit a quarter of a million pounds this year. And the | :13:47. | :13:49.
six`strong workforce doubled. That confidence was seen in the last | :13:50. | :13:50.
North East chamber of commerce quarterly survey. Its members are | :13:51. | :13:55.
the most positive since 2008. It is a sign that businesses in the | :13:56. | :14:00.
north`east are motoring. They are investing in their people. They are | :14:01. | :14:07.
training more. They are investing in plant and machinery and looking for | :14:08. | :14:11.
better premises. And what of house`building and | :14:12. | :14:14.
construction ` a real barometer of how the economy's doing? This County | :14:15. | :14:17.
Durham company saw last year end with a real flourish. There was a | :14:18. | :14:27.
high level of bonus paid across 500 staff. Everybody went away happy. | :14:28. | :14:34.
Now some companies and people won't be so optimistic. They'll still be | :14:35. | :14:38.
having a tough time. Much of the recovery is still anecdotal. But the | :14:39. | :14:43.
positive anecdotes are coming thicker and faster. | :14:44. | :14:50.
There's plenty more to come in tonight's programme. | :14:51. | :14:54.
The organisers of the Lakes Alive festival say it's on hold this year. | :14:55. | :15:02.
The soldiers sharing their harrowing stories on stage. | :15:03. | :15:08.
And the showers will turn increasingly wintry over the next | :15:09. | :15:11.
few days. Join me later for the forecast. | :15:12. | :15:20.
The organisers of the Lakes Alive Festival see is on hold this year. | :15:21. | :15:23.
Over the past five years, the programme has seen spectacular | :15:24. | :15:27.
events held throughout Cumbria. The free shows were initially part | :15:28. | :15:30.
funded by Olympic Legacy money with the rest coming from the arts | :15:31. | :15:33.
council and local organisations. But the major funders are no longer | :15:34. | :15:36.
contributing as Alison Freeman reports. | :15:37. | :15:37.
Its spectacular shows wowed audiences. Lighting up the skies | :15:38. | :15:43.
over Derwent Water two summers ago, the Water Fools show pulled in | :15:44. | :15:49.
12,000 people over two nights. Despite the performances being free, | :15:50. | :15:52.
the economic boost to Keswick was invaluable with many show`goers | :15:53. | :15:54.
travelling long distances to attend, staying at nearby hotels and eating | :15:55. | :16:00.
in the Town's restaurants. But the Lakes Alive festival, as we | :16:01. | :16:06.
know it, has put on hold. Local funding has failed to materialise in | :16:07. | :16:10.
the volume it has in the past and Olympic Legacy funding is no more. | :16:11. | :16:18.
It is more of a challenge. Economic times are hard. But we will continue | :16:19. | :16:30.
to look for opportunities. We know there is a massive love for the | :16:31. | :16:38.
events we have had in the past. It's hoped there will be some events | :16:39. | :16:41.
under the banner of Lakes Alive. But the festival ` with its huge, free, | :16:42. | :16:44.
crowd`pulling events is not happening this year. An Olympic | :16:45. | :16:52.
legacy which sadly did not last. And Alison joins us from our | :16:53. | :16:54.
Carlisle studio now, Alison, you mentioned Olympic legacy there. Was | :16:55. | :17:00.
the funding which formed part of that, always going to end? | :17:01. | :17:09.
Yes. Money from various bodies was always going to end. Last year it | :17:10. | :17:19.
was able to plug those gaps with money from local authorities and | :17:20. | :17:22.
businesses, but this has not been possible this year. They need tens | :17:23. | :17:29.
of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands to put on shows like we | :17:30. | :17:34.
saw last year and the year before. But Lakes Alive is keen to point out | :17:35. | :17:37.
that the street festival that happens in Kendal every year will go | :17:38. | :17:40.
ahead this summer. A new production's coming to the | :17:41. | :17:55.
region in the spring that's a unique collaboration between theatre and | :17:56. | :18:00.
the Armed Forces. Not only is the award`winning play, The Two Worlds | :18:01. | :18:03.
of Charlie F, based on the experiences of injured and wounded | :18:04. | :18:06.
service personnel ` they also make up the cast. | :18:07. | :18:11.
Stephanie Cleasby's been to meet some of the performers at the | :18:12. | :18:17.
Theatre Royal in Newcastle. Real soldiers take to the stage, | :18:18. | :18:20.
sharing their harrowing stories and their battle scars. I was blown up | :18:21. | :18:37.
22 years ago. The Two Worlds of Charlie F is based | :18:38. | :18:40.
on the experiences of injured and wounded personnel, who also make up | :18:41. | :18:44.
the majority of the cast, like Darren Swift from Cumbria. It | :18:45. | :18:50.
started out as a recovery project and it still is that. Some of the | :18:51. | :18:58.
younger people are new to the injuries whereas I am 20 years down | :18:59. | :19:03.
the line. The lead role of Charlie F is played | :19:04. | :19:07.
by trained dancer Cassidy Little. It was while serving on his second tour | :19:08. | :19:11.
in Afghanistan in 2011 as a marine that he lost a leg in an explosion. | :19:12. | :19:19.
One of the interesting things that happens when you are injured is that | :19:20. | :19:27.
you lose a chunk of your ego. I am not talking about the ego that you | :19:28. | :19:32.
associate with stardom order looks. I associate eagle with yourself, | :19:33. | :19:38.
with who you are. `` I associate eagle with yourself. There is a huge | :19:39. | :19:55.
wounded and sick service personnel population. For that good to have an | :19:56. | :19:59.
opportunity to see this is important. It is also important for | :20:00. | :20:05.
the general public to see this. Regardless of how we feel about war | :20:06. | :20:16.
this is about serving. Most importantly it is about the process | :20:17. | :20:21.
of rehabilitation. The play starts at Newcastle's | :20:22. | :20:25.
Theatre Royal on the 28th of April and will raise funds for the Royal | :20:26. | :20:26.
British Legion. Newcastle's star midfielder Yohan | :20:27. | :20:45.
Cabaye has surely played his last game for the Magpies ` who take on | :20:46. | :20:49.
Norwich City in the Premier League tonight. Cabaye is in Paris having a | :20:50. | :20:54.
medical, ahead of his proposed move to Paris St Germain after the clubs | :20:55. | :20:58.
agreed a fee of around ?20 million. Not surprisingly, the fans aren't | :20:59. | :21:01.
happy about losing their best player ` as Dawn Thewlis reports. | :21:02. | :21:13.
The supporters didn't want it, the manager didn't want it, but after | :21:14. | :21:17.
the big spending French side put in a bid of ?14 million a move to PSG | :21:18. | :21:21.
was almost inevitable. After thrashing out a deal worth nearer | :21:22. | :21:24.
?20 million last night, Cabaye got on the plane to the French capital | :21:25. | :21:28.
this morning to have a medical and discuss personal terms. He's been at | :21:29. | :21:31.
the heart of Newcastle's success this season. Stats show the Magpies | :21:32. | :21:33.
win twice as many games with him the team as they do without him. And | :21:34. | :21:39.
on the streets of Newcastle the news didn't go down well. As soon as any | :21:40. | :21:45.
player is worth any money they just sell him. It will cost four or five | :21:46. | :21:59.
positions independent mission. `` four or five positions in the | :22:00. | :22:06.
premiership. Our very good bit of business as far as I am concerned. | :22:07. | :22:11.
After what happened in the last transfer window, it could be a good | :22:12. | :22:22.
thing. If you do not want to play for Newcastle United, get somebody | :22:23. | :22:26.
who does want to play for Newcastle United. He has got a great role of | :22:27. | :22:42.
this football club. Taking him out at this time will leave as | :22:43. | :22:51.
vulnerable. Dutch striker Luuk de Jong is on his | :22:52. | :22:55.
way to Tyneside for a medical tomorrow, initially on a loan basis | :22:56. | :22:59.
with a view to making the deal permanent in the summer, but he wont | :23:00. | :23:02.
replace Cabaye. How much the talismanic midfielder's loss will be | :23:03. | :23:06.
felt by the rest of the squad may be evident tonight when they take on | :23:07. | :23:07.
Road. Commentary on BBC Newcastle with | :23:08. | :23:13.
Mick Lowes and John Anderson. Well at lunchtime on Saturday it's | :23:14. | :23:16.
the Tyne`Wear derby ` and both clubs could have a new face in the squad. | :23:17. | :23:20.
Sunderland are hoping to tie up the signing of Argentinian international | :23:21. | :23:22.
striker Ignacio Scocco. The 28`year`old has been playing for the | :23:23. | :23:25.
