Hello and welcome to your Friday night Look North. In the headlines:

:00:00.:00:07.

Operation Sanctuary. Northumbria Police say they want to speak to 30

:00:08.:00:11.

women as they widen their sex abuse inquiry.

:00:12.:00:37.

In football, the latest comings and goings.

:00:38.:00:54.

Good evening. Police investigating alleged sex crimes on Tyneside have

:00:55.:00:58.

revealed they've identified dozens more women they need to speak to.

:00:59.:01:03.

Officers have spent the week raiding and searching homes and 27 people

:01:04.:01:07.

have been arrested. But now they say the names of 30 further women have

:01:08.:01:12.

emerged who could also be victims. Our News Correspondent Peter Harris

:01:13.:01:16.

is with me now. What do we know about these women? These women may

:01:17.:01:32.

or may not be victims. Their names have come up during the

:01:33.:01:36.

investigation. We are now looking at approximately 30 women. The majority

:01:37.:01:39.

are adults, who have come into the investigation. We need to speak to

:01:40.:01:42.

them. We also need to forensically examine some of the material. The

:01:43.:01:50.

fact that there are these 30 further women being interviewed does hint at

:01:51.:01:53.

the scale of the investigation, doesn't it? It does. It appears to

:01:54.:02:06.

be big. We don't know how big it could become. The police will go

:02:07.:02:20.

through the forensics. At the end of the week, 27 people arrested on

:02:21.:02:25.

conspiracy to rape. Some were in care. Now these extra 30 women who

:02:26.:02:36.

the police will talk to. It is a big operation and I can't speculate how

:02:37.:02:39.

big it will get. We have specialist detectives from specialist units

:02:40.:02:41.

working with the suspected offenders. We need to make sure that

:02:42.:02:44.

any potential victims are protected and safeguarded. Finally, what we

:02:45.:03:03.

should remember is the girls in care. The police say they are

:03:04.:03:15.

protected. The only female Conservative MP in

:03:16.:03:18.

our region has been deselected by her own constituency association.

:03:19.:03:20.

Anne McIntosh has been a North Yorkshire MP since 1997 but the

:03:21.:03:23.

Thirsk and Malton Conservative Association has voted not to

:03:24.:03:26.

re`adopt her as their candidate for the next General Election. However,

:03:27.:03:29.

Ms McIntosh has declared she will stand for the seat in 2015, even

:03:30.:03:33.

though she's been rejected by the local Conservatives. Len Tingle

:03:34.:03:34.

reports from Westminster. I do not intend to be thrown aside.

:03:35.:04:14.

It is my intention to stand and represent at the next general

:04:15.:04:19.

election. I will continue to fulfill my duties.

:04:20.:04:30.

Nuclear workers were turned away from Sellafield in West Cumbria this

:04:31.:04:35.

morning after a higher than normal radioactivity reading was picked up

:04:36.:04:38.

by a monitor on the site's perimeter. Only essential staff were

:04:39.:04:40.

allowed on site while Sellafield Limited investigated a potential

:04:41.:04:43.

leak. But at noon it was announced that higher`than`normal levels of

:04:44.:04:46.

naturally occuring radon gas had triggered the alert. It was early

:04:47.:04:53.

this morning than an alarm on the perimeter of the site was activated.

:04:54.:05:07.

That meant it had to be taken very seriously. These sensors are very

:05:08.:05:11.

sensitive. We were told that as a precaution all nonessential staff

:05:12.:05:15.

were told to stay away. Only some of the cleaning, laundry and canteen

:05:16.:05:17.

staff were told to attend. Investigations have now started,

:05:18.:05:20.

asking what's caused the level of radiation to be above normal levels.

:05:21.:05:24.

Earlier today, I spoke to Rory O'Neill from the site to find out

:05:25.:05:30.

more. We've been carrying out investigations all day and we're

:05:31.:05:33.

pleased to say that the alarm was triggered by normally`occuring,

:05:34.:05:39.

background radiation. Nothing to do with any of our operations. Now we

:05:40.:05:44.

need to find out why that monitor was particularly sensitive. We'll

:05:45.:05:48.

carry that out, but there's nothing significant to report. Just after

:05:49.:05:53.

lunch, we got a statement, saying there was no risk to the public or

:05:54.:05:58.

workers. It said it was actually a naturally`occuring gas in the air `

:05:59.:06:05.

something called radon gas. The alarm that went off was sensitive.

:06:06.:06:12.

Earlier, I spoke to a representative from the union that look after

:06:13.:06:18.

workers at the site. It's been a well executed response.

:06:19.:06:26.

Communications went out early, so a lot of people didn't set out to

:06:27.:06:34.

work. It was a good response. The wider community have been thanked

:06:35.:06:38.

today for their maturity. Sellafield have told us they're not going to

:06:39.:06:41.

apologise because they take safety very seriously. The good news is

:06:42.:06:51.

that weekend workers will be in as normal and the same goes for the

:06:52.:07:03.

start of the working week on Monday. Around 1,000 police officers will be

:07:04.:07:06.

on duty for tomorrow's Tyne Wear derby to ensure there is no repeat

:07:07.:07:10.

of the disorder that followed the fixture in Newcastle last year.

:07:11.:07:13.

Then, 150 people were arrested as violence broke out in the city

:07:14.:07:16.

centre. This time, Sunderland wanted their own fans to be barred from the

:07:17.:07:19.

match for their own protection unless they used official transport.

:07:20.:07:24.

But this has been dropped after a campaign by fans. Andrew Hartley has

:07:25.:07:29.

this special report. Disorder that disgraced a city. In its wake came a

:07:30.:07:34.

new idea to stop the violence happening again. The plan was that

:07:35.:07:37.

Sunderland fans would not have been allowed to make their own way to

:07:38.:07:41.

tomorrow's match. Instead, bussed in and out on official coaches. A

:07:42.:07:46.

system some call 'the bubble'. Three weeks ago, that plan was dropped.

:07:47.:07:51.

Had the bubble been in operation last April, all 2,500 Sunderland

:07:52.:07:54.

fans leaving the match would have all turned right at this spot `

:07:55.:07:57.

walking just yards to a heavily guarded convoy of coaches lined up

:07:58.:08:00.

along Barrack Road and whisked away back to Sunderland. But instead

:08:01.:08:09.

hundreds of fans were travelling by rail and so with heavy police

:08:10.:08:12.

protection they turned left towards a baying mob. There were a series of

:08:13.:08:18.

flash points across the city centre ` the police and Sunderland fans

:08:19.:08:22.

came under a hail of bottles and smoke bombs as they marched towards

:08:23.:08:25.

Newcastle Central Station to board trains home. Had we had the bubble

:08:26.:08:36.

none of that disorder would have happened because the Sunderland fans

:08:37.:08:39.

would have been escorted away in one large protected group. It doesn't

:08:40.:08:50.

look good. The bubble isn't a new idea. In South Wales it's been in

:08:51.:08:53.

operation for years for the Cardiff`Swansea derby ` a fixture

:08:54.:08:56.

with a long history of violence between rival fans. At last

:08:57.:08:59.

October's Premier League fixture 3,000 Swansea fans went to Cardiff

:09:00.:09:04.

with no arrests. Impressed, Sunderland announced it would copy

:09:05.:09:10.

that model. There are two main reasons ` firstly the safety of our

:09:11.:09:15.

fans. We want to get them safely to the game. Secondly, dismissing

:09:16.:09:19.

concerns the police have about kicking the game off later than

:09:20.:09:28.

1.30pm. We want to get back to traditional kick off times of 3pm

:09:29.:09:36.

and beyond. Ultimately our priority is public safety. If you look at the

:09:37.:09:41.

coaches from last year, the first Sunderland fans on those were back

:09:42.:09:44.

home before the first special football train had left the station.

:09:45.:09:45.

coaches from last year, the first Sunderland fans on those It's the

:09:46.:09:54.

safest and quickest way. But the plan was pulled after a campaign

:09:55.:09:58.

from supporters' groups. We didn't want fans to be told what to do.

:09:59.:10:02.

Sunderland fans were being punished for things beyond their control.

:10:03.:10:09.

Football fans shouldn't be told how to go to a football match. Football

:10:10.:10:20.

fans are needed. Hopefully they behave themselves on Saturday. It

:10:21.:10:25.

cuts a lot of the nonsense out. Good idea. It stops trouble and hassle.

:10:26.:10:37.

We should be allowed to go to the match the way we want to. They're

:10:38.:10:41.

not treating people as responsible adults.

:10:42.:11:04.

You're watching Look North. Still to come this Friday evening, Jeff has

:11:05.:11:09.

all the weekend sport, including the Tyne`Wear derby preview. Plus ` keep

:11:10.:11:12.

dancing! The Strictly tour waltzed into Newcastle last night.

:11:13.:11:17.

Join me for the weather. He's one of the most powerful men in

:11:18.:11:41.

government but one Northern council says Communities Secretary Eric

:11:42.:11:44.

Pickles is ignoring the impact of cuts in the region. Gateshead

:11:45.:11:47.

Council ` which has made ?75 million of cuts since 2010 ` says it's

:11:48.:11:50.

repeatedly asked for a meeting with Mr Pickles, but without success.

:11:51.:11:53.

It's understood that he has only made one official visit to the

:11:54.:11:56.

region since the coalition was formed. Here's our Political

:11:57.:11:58.

Correspondent Mark Denten. Gateshead's Sunderland Road Library

:11:59.:12:02.

` still open but hit by cuts. There used to be council staff here. Now

:12:03.:12:05.

they're all volunteers. Overall the council has cut ?75 million from its

:12:06.:12:09.

budget over four years but it says it's struggling to get its concerns

:12:10.:12:12.

through to this chap ` Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric

:12:13.:12:15.

Pickles. I wrote in 2010, very shortly after this government came

:12:16.:12:21.

into power, asking him to meet us. I had to write again in January. I'm

:12:22.:12:29.

still waiting. He's Secretary of State for local government... The

:12:30.:12:33.

Sunday Politics programme made a Freedom of Information request. We

:12:34.:12:42.

asked where Eric Pickles has made official visits in England since the

:12:43.:12:48.

coalition was formed in 2010. We were told to provide that

:12:49.:12:50.

information would cost an excessive amount of money. It would involve

:12:51.:13:00.

going through his diary. But Mr Pickles has been a remarkably rare

:13:01.:13:04.

sight in the region over the last three and a half years ` that's

:13:05.:13:08.

unlike some of his colleagues. We understand Business Secretary Vince

:13:09.:13:11.

Cable's been to the North East and Cumbria eight times since 2010.

:13:12.:13:17.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg's made ten official visits. And the

:13:18.:13:20.

Prime Minister David Cameron has been to the region 12 times. Eric

:13:21.:13:23.

Pickles ` well, he's made one official visit to North East and

:13:24.:13:27.

Cumbria and that was back in June 2011. But only this week the Cities

:13:28.:13:30.

Minister, Greg Clarke, agreed to meet North East MPs regularly to

:13:31.:13:34.

discuss the economy. And this Conservative councillor says the row

:13:35.:13:37.

over missing Mr Pickles is nothing more than political mischief making.

:13:38.:13:43.

This is a Labour spin. A nice little trap to remove all blame from them.

:13:44.:13:49.

They have choices to make on their budget. There are modern ways you

:13:50.:13:57.

can communicate ` they're just moaning. This was Mr Pickles on his

:13:58.:14:02.

one official visit to the region in 2011. The DCLG say numerous

:14:03.:14:05.

ministerial visits have been made to the North Of England since then.

:14:06.:14:15.

They say ministers at Westminster have what they call an open door

:14:16.:14:21.

policy. And there's more on that story,

:14:22.:14:24.

including reaction from council workers, on the Sunday Politics at

:14:25.:14:27.

11am on Sunday morning here on BBC One.

:14:28.:14:30.

It's 50 years since the closure of the last ironstone mine in

:14:31.:14:33.

Cleveland. At one time there were 45 mines, digging out the essential

:14:34.:14:36.

iron`making ore, and employing thousands of miners. Half a century

:14:37.:14:40.

on from the last closure, it's been suggested by Middlesbrough MP Tom

:14:41.:14:43.

Blenkinsop that an East Cleveland mining museum be given national

:14:44.:14:45.

status in recognition of the importance of the industry. 50 years

:14:46.:14:55.

ago the last shift clocked on at the last ironstone mine in Cleveland.

:14:56.:15:01.

Today the last tonnes of will be blasted out of the mineface. When

:15:02.:15:09.

that's done, their work is finished. It will be closed. This man was

:15:10.:15:13.

there ` apprentice at 15. North Skelton was one of 45 mines that dug

:15:14.:15:21.

out 300 million tonnes of ironstone. `` 360. We weren't aware that around

:15:22.:15:26.

the world they were discovering ore of much better quality. In the end

:15:27.:15:38.

that put us out of business. Ironstone fuelled Teeside's boom,

:15:39.:15:44.

and the country's prosperity. Today it's remembered in this museum,

:15:45.:15:50.

itself once a mine. But the red rock could be forced to centre stage once

:15:51.:15:53.

more ` it's been suggested that this should become the national ironstone

:15:54.:15:57.

museum. It would be the site where all memorabilia would come to. We

:15:58.:16:10.

want to expand and improve the experience we currently provide.

:16:11.:16:16.

National status is in the gift of the government, but it could be a

:16:17.:16:20.

fitting memorial to an industry that died half a century ago. This is the

:16:21.:16:24.

last cargo. Tomorrow, the rails will be silent.

:16:25.:16:55.

Time for sport. We'll come to the derby in just a

:16:56.:17:00.

moment. But first ` with just over four hours to go before the transfer

:17:01.:17:03.

widow closes until August, what have the main talking points been so far

:17:04.:17:15.

today? Sunderland have signed Liam Bridcutt. He signed from Brighton.

:17:16.:17:26.

Lee Cattermole has been linked with Stoke. Newcastle looked to have

:17:27.:17:51.

missed out on a replacement for Cabaye.

:17:52.:17:54.

Back now to the Tyne`Wear derby, which kicks off tomorrow lunchtime.

:17:55.:17:56.

The toxic atmosphere surrounding this fixture in recent seasons has

:17:57.:18:00.

been criticised by many so it was refreshing to see girls representing

:18:01.:18:03.

Sunderland and Newcastle take part in a friendly football match this

:18:04.:18:06.

week as part of the FA's Women and Girls project. The initiative `

:18:07.:18:09.

supported by both clubs' charitable foundations ` aims to get more

:18:10.:18:19.

female players involved in football. Belmont Community School from Durham

:18:20.:18:22.

beat Ashington's Josephine Butler Campus ` but that may not be an omen

:18:23.:18:26.

for a red and white victory tomorrow. So how should supporters

:18:27.:18:29.

assess the prospects of both teams? Mark Tulip looks ahead. Last time

:18:30.:18:33.

out at St James's both clubs were equally desperate for the three

:18:34.:18:35.

points. This time it's just Sunderland in the relegation mire,

:18:36.:18:38.

although the Magpies are staring at a possible hat`trick of derby

:18:39.:18:41.

defeats. Will any of this week's new signings make a difference? It's

:18:42.:18:44.

interesting to have two strikes possibly making their debut. The

:18:45.:18:48.

lack of goals, for both teams, is a problem. Loic Remy is suspended for

:18:49.:18:53.

Newcastle and Sunderland strikers just can't score. Whichever forward

:18:54.:19:01.

line clicks... That's the defining area. It comes down to the attacking

:19:02.:19:08.

midfielders. The strikers aren't in form. You're looking at Newcastle...

:19:09.:19:17.

Ben Arfa will be influential. Adam Johnson for Sunderland. I suspect

:19:18.:19:36.

those two will have a big say. For so long it was Sunderland going into

:19:37.:19:40.

these games with the scars of previous defeats. They had a fear.

:19:41.:19:45.

Even when they played well they weren't winning. Newcastle have had

:19:46.:19:50.

two defeats in a row and they're in front of their own supporters. There

:19:51.:19:53.

is more pressure on them. How will they cope? A lot of people know what

:19:54.:20:04.

derbies are like. Players shouldn't be fazed. But you have to hold your

:20:05.:20:17.

nerve and keep 11 men on the pitch. There seems to be plenty of mutual

:20:18.:20:21.

respect between the managers. Big game for both clubs. No less

:20:22.:20:30.

important for us. To get to a cup final, be in the FA Cup and out of

:20:31.:20:34.

the relegation zone is a great achievement for Gus. They're in a

:20:35.:20:38.

better place than when we played them. We have to be at our best.

:20:39.:20:46.

Alan said until I was involved I wouldn't realise what it was like

:20:47.:20:54.

and he was right. It means so much to the fans. Crazy. I hope we have a

:20:55.:21:01.

proper game with passion and no incidents. I hope the fans enjoy the

:21:02.:21:15.

day. Middlesbrough are hoping to get on

:21:16.:21:18.

the coat`tails of the play`off positions when they visit in`form

:21:19.:21:21.

Doncaster tomorrow. Aitor Karanka's side will be without defender Rhys

:21:22.:21:24.

Williams who's due to undergo ankle surgery, which means he's out for

:21:25.:21:27.

the rest of the season. Behind the scenes ` as we heard earlier ` Boro

:21:28.:21:32.

are still going flat out to land a striker before tonight's 11pm

:21:33.:21:46.

deadline. It's difficult to win because they have confidence. Back

:21:47.:21:56.

to transfer news and Carlisle United have been busy, with the departure

:21:57.:21:59.

of midfielder Prince Buaben to Partick Thistle paving the way for

:22:00.:22:02.

the loan arrivals of two Manchester United youngsters. They've also

:22:03.:22:05.

confirmed Virgin Trains as their new shirt sponsor. The Blues are at

:22:06.:22:08.

League One strugglers Bristol City tomorrow. Follow every kick on BBC

:22:09.:22:11.

Radio Cumbria. Hartlepool are at home to League Two high`fliers

:22:12.:22:13.

Scunthorpe, who are second, while York City must travel to third

:22:14.:22:16.

placed Fleetwood after back`to`back defeats. Full coverage on all your

:22:17.:22:24.

BBC local radio stations. Well it's also a big weekend of

:22:25.:22:27.

international rugby union. It's the start of the Six Nations

:22:28.:22:30.

Championship ` and both England's men and women take on the French.

:22:31.:22:33.

Skippering the England women's team in Grenoble will be Darlington

:22:34.:22:36.

Mowden Park Sharks' fly`half, Katy McLean ` MBE! Katy, who's a

:22:37.:22:39.

schoolteacher from South Shields, will have Newcastle's Sarah Hunter

:22:40.:22:42.

as her vice`captain. They'll be looking to improve on last season's

:22:43.:22:51.

third place. He might not have had the lean body

:22:52.:22:55.

for spray tan and lycra, but it was Mark Benton's character that won

:22:56.:22:58.

hearts when he sashayed onto our screens for Strictly Come Dancing. A

:22:59.:23:02.

hit with viewers, the Middlesbrough actor made it as far as the tenth

:23:03.:23:06.

show with his partner Iveta Lukosiute. Tonight, Benton is back,

:23:07.:23:09.

dancing in front of a North East home crowd as the Strictly tour

:23:10.:23:12.

comes to Newcastle's Arena. Hannah Bayman caught up with him. Dancing

:23:13.:23:22.

live in front of millions ` not bad for a lad from Guisborough whose

:23:23.:23:25.

early acting experience was at Middlesbrough Youth Theatre. Who'd

:23:26.:23:31.

have thought I'd be dancing? I think I'm the only one who hasn't had a

:23:32.:23:37.

spray tan! I never dreamt I would do this. We became such good friends.

:23:38.:23:40.

We had a laugh. Sometimes I would say we need to focus and get the

:23:41.:23:48.

dance done! It was a fun experience. I enjoyed every minute of it. We had

:23:49.:23:52.

a great time. The hours went by quickly. Will you have anyone

:23:53.:23:57.

supporting you in the audience? I hope so. Friends and family. I'm

:23:58.:24:09.

really excited. I've heard so much. So I have two words ` go 'Boro!

:24:10.:24:31.

Now time for the weather. We're expecting hill snow. Three weather

:24:32.:24:49.

warnings in the forecast. Great image here. So, rain and hill snow

:24:50.:25:03.

across the region. Also a warning for ice. Snow to 200 metres. This

:25:04.:25:20.

evening, rain at first. Snow for the top of the hills. Later, it should

:25:21.:25:33.

clear and ice could be the problem. Temperatures just above freezing.

:25:34.:25:47.

Strong winds as well. Gusts for just a few seconds of up to 70 miles per

:25:48.:25:56.

hour. The weather warning is in place till the early hours of

:25:57.:26:11.

Sunday. Further hill snow and rain. Snow could find its way to towns and

:26:12.:26:15.

cities but we don't expect it to lie. It could be a snowy day! Six

:26:16.:26:26.
