Hello, good evening from Look North. The trial began today of a

businessman accused of murdering his wife. Mark Arthur ran a computer

services company with his wife Heather, from their home in the

Newcastle suburb of Gosforth. It's where she was found stabbed to

death, last April. Our correspondent, Peter Harris sent

this report from Newcastle Crown Court.

She was a singer in a jazz band that had been having an affair with the

saxophonist. On the morning of 29 April, she told her husband that was

over. The prosecution alleges he could not handle that and he stabbed

her through the heart. From there, he went to a GP surgery and told the

staff he had hurt his wife. The court also heard the tales of text

messages she had said to her lover saying she was shaking in fear that

the prospect of telling him the marriage was over, and she also

periodically complained about his behaviour. He has admitted

manslaughter but the knives model around the trial continues. ``

demonise Marder. A senior MP has called for action

after a fire has been raging for five months. The fire broke out last

September, in a huge mound of waste carpet stored on land at Thrunton in

Northumberland. Putting the fire out risked contaminating the nearby

natural water supply, and so it was left to burn. Julie Smith reports.

This fire has affected daily life here in Thrunton for the last five

months. It's now around 85`90% out. But getting this far is down to the

daily efforts of the landowner. It's not his waste, but his concern is

bigger. He began this effort to protect the natural water supply

that lies beneath the land. And now that water is back under threat.

This is the type of stuff that is coming off it and it smells and

looks horrific. We are taking preventative measures but we know it

is percolating through the ground. The Environment Agency test the

water on a weekly basis. And three weeks ago they served an enforcement

notice on the site operator Blackwater North East. They have

three weeks left to remove all this waste or store it securely.

The environment agency permission for the material to be put there and

it is now their job to deal with the consequences of what I think was a

mistake in the first place. The fears this will eventually seep into

the aquifer and it will affect our water supply. If that happens we

will not have any water at all and they will have to find ways of

dealing with it. No one knows yet when the fire will be at or what the

long`term environmental impact will be.

The two soldiers who dry when their car hit a tree in North Yorkshire

have been named. Trooper Mark McKeen, who was driving the car, was

23 and from Northern Ireland. His passenger, Private Codie Richardson,

was 20 and from Stockton. They were killed when their car left the road

in Catterick Garrison just after eight o'clock on Saturday night.

Cumbria's former Chief Constable has broken his silence about his year

long suspension from the force in an exclusive interview with the BBC's

Inside Out programme. Stuart Hyde was investigated over allegations of

misconduct, but was cleared of all charges. He's now retired from the

force and has described how he felt when he realised he was under

investigation. 6pm I received a phone call to say could I go

immediately to committee room two and CD chair of the authority. I was

absolutely devastated and made this `` resuspended me. I felt as if the

bottom had dropped out of my life. And you can see the full report on

region. Nonetheless, Anne McIntosh was deselected by her local party

association on Friday. It's still making waves in her North Yorkshire

constituency. Jonathan Swingler has been hearing voters' reactions.

The next election will be an interesting one. Anne McIntosh has

said she plans to fight for the seat although she will not be the

Conservative candidate. I think it is wrong and it seems like they are

getting rid of her. Would it put you off voting Tory in the future? Yes.

Would you vote for him again? Yes, I would. She spent a lot of time in

London. You never really hear what she has done so I do not have a lot

to say. What do you make of it? I think she was fantastic. I think it

is a bad thing if they get rid of her. The MP in question didn't want

to be interviewed today. On Friday she was in fighting mood after being

deselected. I do not intend to be thrown aside

by a small group. It is for my constituency as a whole to dismiss

me if they wish to do so. Meanwhile the chairman of the local

party association has denied calling her a silly little girl and

accusations that he doesn't like working with women. It is totally

and utterly untrue. We want to go for an open selection. We will ask

for the best candidates to come forward and whoever returns, we will

support them. This political row has made national headlines.
