And we will be talking live to Dave Johns, about the success of the film

:00:00.:01:02.

I, Daniel Blake. And the Durham and Yorkshire players who are the new

:01:03.:01:05.

boys in charge of England's cricket team.

:01:06.:01:12.

Hundreds of mourners gathered in York Minster this lunchtime to

:01:13.:01:18.

celebrate the life of seven-year-old Katie Rough was killed in the city

:01:19.:01:22.

last month. As well as a private family service, members of the

:01:23.:01:25.

public were invited to help remember her short life. Her parents said

:01:26.:01:30.

they wanted a lasting memorial to their daughter so that people can

:01:31.:01:33.

remember her for who she was and not how she died.

:01:34.:01:37.

Outside York Minster this afternoon, the hearse arrived pulled by two

:01:38.:01:45.

white horses. Mourners and onlookers fell silent. Her parents, Paul and

:01:46.:01:51.

Alison, were met by the Archbishop of York, Doctor John sentiment, who

:01:52.:01:53.

was leading the thanksgiving service. The coffin was decorated

:01:54.:01:58.

with characters from one of the writers that she loved the most, Dr

:01:59.:02:04.

Seuss. The competition join to sing some of our favourite hymns, and her

:02:05.:02:08.

uncle Stephen held back tears as he paid tribute, describing her as a

:02:09.:02:12.

smart and beautiful child who will live on forever in our hearts. They

:02:13.:02:19.

came together as a family and the grief has brought them together more

:02:20.:02:26.

so. And I actually think Stephen has been a tower of strength. Before the

:02:27.:02:38.

funeral, Katie's family released a video which shows a compilation of

:02:39.:02:43.

photos of the seven-year-old's short light. They want people to remember

:02:44.:02:47.

her for what she was like, and not how she died. Katie was killed last

:02:48.:02:55.

month. She was found with serious neck and chest injuries on a playing

:02:56.:02:59.

field near her home and died later in hospital. A 15-year-old girl has

:03:00.:03:04.

been charged with her murder. Her tragic death has affected many

:03:05.:03:08.

communities across the city, and hundreds of people packed into York

:03:09.:03:12.

Minster today to pay their respects to the little girl they didn't know,

:03:13.:03:16.

but they wanted to remember. It has moved the whole city. We are helping

:03:17.:03:24.

to raise money for two your charities, one of them for

:03:25.:03:27.

disadvantaged children, and just to remember her as a lovely little girl

:03:28.:03:32.

and not leave a legacy that something awful happened. After the

:03:33.:03:37.

service, the coffin was carried out from York Minster with the hymn,

:03:38.:03:44.

he's got the whole world in his hands with the words change to he's

:03:45.:03:49.

got Katie in his hands. This personal family tragedy has become

:03:50.:03:54.

something very public. And now, her parents want to set up a lasting

:03:55.:03:58.

memorial to the daughter that they say made them so happy.

:03:59.:04:11.

The Prison Officers' Association says it's not surprised

:04:12.:04:13.

by the findings of a BBC investigation, which secretly filmed

:04:14.:04:15.

widespread drug abuse and security failings at one of our jails.

:04:16.:04:18.

A Panorama reporter spent two months undercover at HMP

:04:19.:04:20.

Northumberland near Morpeth, which is privately run.

:04:21.:04:22.

On the undercover reporter's first day inside, 2.5 kilograms of Spice

:04:23.:04:38.

an illegal high with a prison value of quarter of a million pounds

:04:39.:04:41.

Despite this, Panorama was told that there was no lock down

:04:42.:04:46.

so that the block could be completely searched.

:04:47.:05:08.

During filming, the BBC discovered a serious security breach.

:05:09.:05:10.

Alarms on two doors were not working.

:05:11.:05:22.

Nearby, officers found wire-cutting tools and later a hole

:05:23.:05:24.

The reporter asked the Governor what went wrong.

:05:25.:05:45.

A former officer says that the company that now runs the prison,

:05:46.:05:55.

Sodexo, is to blame for the influx of drugs, a situation that he

:05:56.:06:02.

describes as ballistic. Sodexo got the nose off with things like drugs,

:06:03.:06:06.

saying that they didn't have drug problems. If you can't catch drugs

:06:07.:06:11.

you can report drugs and you don't have a drug problem. I think Sodexo

:06:12.:06:18.

should have been in that special measures and consideration be given

:06:19.:06:22.

to taking the contract from Sodexo for that prison. What have the

:06:23.:06:34.

prison and the government got to say? We have had a short statement

:06:35.:06:38.

from Sodexo, the company that runs the prison. They say that safety of

:06:39.:06:45.

staff is their top priority. The government has said that it is

:06:46.:06:47.

determined to reform our prisons. "Panorama - Behind Bars: Prison

:06:48.:06:49.

Undercover" is on BBC One at 8.30pm. A father and daughter have appeared

:06:50.:06:54.

in court in Carlisle charged with the manslaughter

:06:55.:06:56.

of their 91-year-old relative. and 43-year-old

:06:57.:06:59.

Jacqueline Fairclugh, both from Cockermouth, deny

:07:00.:07:04.

unlawfully killing Maude White - their mother-in-law and grandmother

:07:05.:07:07.

respectively, who died last May. Police searching for a man

:07:08.:07:10.

who was last seen at Hartlepool

:07:11.:07:13.

Marina have found a body. 51-year-old Andrew Roy failed to

:07:14.:07:14.

show up for work on Friday morning. The body hasn't yet been formally

:07:15.:07:19.

identified but Mr Roy's

:07:20.:07:21.

family has been informed. A tanker's overturned and fallen

:07:22.:07:28.

30 feet down a railway

:07:29.:07:29.

embankment in Northumberland. The vehicle, which contained

:07:30.:07:31.

heating oil, left the road between Fourstones and Warden

:07:32.:07:33.

while travelling towards Hexham. The heating oil had to be

:07:34.:07:37.

removed before the tanker

:07:38.:07:39.

could be recovered. The driver escaped

:07:40.:07:40.

with minor injuries. Campaigners against fracking

:07:41.:07:44.

in North Yorkshire say they'll be fielding candidates in this year's

:07:45.:07:46.

local council elections, who will block planning permission

:07:47.:07:49.

for the controversial process. A new group called Frack Free

:07:50.:07:53.

United has been set up which will coordinate

:07:54.:07:57.

the new political strategy Protests, petitions,

:07:58.:07:59.

and legal challenges have become part of the anti-fracking story over

:08:00.:08:11.

the past couple of years But, so far, they have had

:08:12.:08:14.

little practical effect. If local councillors can't be persua

:08:15.:08:17.

to turn down planning permission, We've got County Council elections

:08:18.:08:22.

coming up in North Yorkshire. With several others right

:08:23.:08:28.

across the country. And we are looking for people

:08:29.:08:30.

who are going to stand political party who will,

:08:31.:08:39.

as part of their manifesto, We need people who are going to come

:08:40.:08:43.

to County Hall who are passionate about environmental issues,

:08:44.:08:50.

passionate about education, about child protection,

:08:51.:08:51.

about rural isolation, about maintaining

:08:52.:08:53.

a sustainable library service, Protests in the past outside

:08:54.:08:57.

North Yorkshire County Council headquarters in Northallerton have

:08:58.:09:06.

already failed to convince councillors who control the planning

:09:07.:09:10.

authority to turn down the one fracking application they have had

:09:11.:09:15.

to decide on so far. The real test as to whether this

:09:16.:09:24.

political initiative is going to work will only be known

:09:25.:09:26.

in May, after the local Across all those county councils,

:09:27.:09:29.

there are companies that asking them to grant permission

:09:30.:09:33.

for them to frack. Recruitment has begun for a new team

:09:34.:09:48.

building is full York Minster after 30 volunteers were sacked last month

:09:49.:09:52.

after concerns about safeguarding. Part of the role of head of the bell

:09:53.:09:57.

tower will include having to hire a team of volunteer bell ringers.

:09:58.:10:08.

Coming up, the act of kindness. How Samaritan helped to turn around the

:10:09.:10:13.

light of this homeless man. And if you are fed up feeling frozen,

:10:14.:10:17.

things are going to become milder over the next few days. Join me

:10:18.:10:19.

later for the forecast. It's a hard-hitting story which has

:10:20.:10:26.

provoked a lot of political debate. Shot on Tyneside, "I, Daniel Blake"

:10:27.:10:29.

is a film about our benefits system. it starred a Geordie comic

:10:30.:10:32.

in his first ever feature. And last night it won Outstanding

:10:33.:10:38.

British Film at the Baftas, shining an even brighter

:10:39.:10:41.

international spotlight Our arts reporter Sharuna Sagar

:10:42.:10:42.

was at the ceremony and is in Central London

:10:43.:10:47.

for us tonight. I'm at Regent Street Cinema

:10:48.:10:49.

where, as you can see, they are screening the Bafta-award

:10:50.:10:59.

winning I, Daniel Blake. I can say that now because last

:11:00.:11:02.

night the honour was bestowed on the film at the 70th

:11:03.:11:05.

British Academy Film Awards. I was there for the build-up

:11:06.:11:12.

on an immaculate red carpet. You have to keep the red carpet

:11:13.:11:25.

clean because the stars will be out tonight for the BAFTAs this year.

:11:26.:11:29.

The question is will the Brits triumph over the glitz? The attempt

:11:30.:11:39.

to put Newcastle back on the cinematic map is up against the

:11:40.:11:44.

blockbuster Hollywood musical, La La Land.

:11:45.:11:50.

Hollywood royalty, actual royalty and Geordie royalty.

:11:51.:11:58.

Dave, you scrub up well. Yes, it is a long way from Byker to the BAFTAs.

:11:59.:12:11.

What an amazing journey. We shot this in 2015 and we never thought of

:12:12.:12:18.

anything like this. It started at Cannes and has just gone on and on.

:12:19.:12:20.

It is amazing. Ken Loach cast the standup

:12:21.:12:21.

comedian in the lead role of his hard hitting drama

:12:22.:12:24.

about the welfare state. But why did he decide

:12:25.:12:26.

to film it in Newcastle? It is a city with a strong sense of

:12:27.:12:35.

resistance. It is a fine city. It looks great but also, the people

:12:36.:12:38.

make you smile as well as break your heart.

:12:39.:12:40.

And that certainly had some bearing on

:12:41.:12:41.

the first award of the evening -

:12:42.:12:44.

Incredibly, this is the first Bafta Ken Loach has won

:12:45.:12:54.

and he has the people of the North East to thank for that.

:12:55.:13:01.

Thank you to the Academy for endorsing the truth of what the film

:13:02.:13:08.

says which hundreds of thousands of people in this country know, and

:13:09.:13:12.

that is that the most vulnerable and the purest people are treated by

:13:13.:13:16.

this government with a callous brutality which is disgraceful. And

:13:17.:13:20.

despite the glitz and glamour of occasions like this, we are with the

:13:21.:13:24.

people. Thanks, for this. I'm now joined by the bleary-

:13:25.:13:33.

eyed star of the film, Dave Johns. You have been up all night? Yes,

:13:34.:13:43.

with all the greats and the stars. That must of been a special

:13:44.:13:48.

occasion. Yes, it was. Such a great thing for the film. It keeps it in

:13:49.:13:53.

the public eye. It is great. Two years ago you were just a jobbing

:13:54.:13:58.

Geordie stand-up comedian. Now you are an international movie star.

:13:59.:14:02.

Where did it all go wrong? Where did it all go wrong?! It has been an

:14:03.:14:09.

incredible journey. From October 2015 it started in Byker, and now

:14:10.:14:21.

we're at the BAFTA awards. And you have all of these a list stars on

:14:22.:14:30.

speed dial now. Yes, yes. Meryl Streep and Isabel Huppert, my new

:14:31.:14:40.

pals. What is next for you? I am doing the Edinburgh Festival this

:14:41.:14:47.

year, at the Pleasance and I have just heard from my agent that I have

:14:48.:14:51.

got a film starting in April, May, so that is exciting. And you

:14:52.:15:02.

secretly want to be a Bond villain. Yes, how cool would that be? Living

:15:03.:15:09.

in an abandoned mine, riding a robotic pit pony. They have had

:15:10.:15:16.

Europeans and posh English people, but now they need to have a Geordie

:15:17.:15:18.

Bond villain. Dave tells me he's available after

:15:19.:15:24.

the Edinburgh Festival - It is a great idea. I like it. He

:15:25.:15:37.

will have two toughen up and take his coat off.

:15:38.:15:38.

Now, how many times have you walked past a so-called

:15:39.:15:41.

down-and-out person in a doorway without a second thought?

:15:42.:15:43.

Well, Phil Webb was in that situation.

:15:44.:15:44.

Lots of people walked by when he was at rock bottom,

:15:45.:15:47.

As actor and director Chris Connel reports,

:15:48.:15:51.

that act of kindness helped turn Phil's life round.

:15:52.:15:58.

Phil Webb, a former soldier performing in brother 22 theatre

:15:59.:16:08.

company's war stories. 17 months ago, he was drunk and homeless in

:16:09.:16:14.

Carlisle. The main thing I remember is that it was cold and I felt

:16:15.:16:20.

pathetic. I just sat with my head down. Nobody could see me and I

:16:21.:16:27.

didn't want to see anybody else. It all changed when a passer-by decided

:16:28.:16:32.

to help. After a night in a bed and breakfast, Phil's good Samaritan put

:16:33.:16:35.

him in touch with the British Legion. It helped get him off the

:16:36.:16:39.

streets and back on his feet. And the stranger that helped him? Inside

:16:40.:16:50.

out tracked him down, Stephen Finlayson, fitness trainer and good

:16:51.:16:54.

Samaritan. He said that the look in Phil's eyes make them act. I have

:16:55.:16:58.

seen that look before. That is when you know that someone is at rock

:16:59.:17:03.

bottom. He doesn't need food, drink or a sleeping bag, he needs someone

:17:04.:17:06.

to pick him up and take him somewhere where he's going to be

:17:07.:17:13.

safer than on streets. I can tell you that Phil sees that moment as

:17:14.:17:17.

the pivotal moment of his life when everything started turning round and

:17:18.:17:19.

heading in the right direction. Would you be surprised to find out

:17:20.:17:25.

that Phil is in a play that I directed? No way. Literally one year

:17:26.:17:30.

from that night that you met him. You are kidding. Would you like to

:17:31.:17:35.

meet him? HE SOBS. Yes, I would love to come

:17:36.:17:56.

and meet him. So, do Stephen and Phil get to meet? You can see what

:17:57.:18:05.

happens tonight on Inside Out tonight.

:18:06.:18:06.

And Inside Out is here on BBC One at 7.30pm.

:18:07.:18:18.

Time for Team Talk with Justin and Steve.

:18:19.:18:22.

Thanks, Carol. Steve, we'll come to you and the football in a moment,

:18:23.:18:25.

but we HAVE to start with cricket tonight because,

:18:26.:18:27.

as you may have seen, England's new skipper

:18:28.:18:29.

and vice-captain come from our two first-class counties.

:18:30.:18:31.

In what must be one of the worst kept secrets in sport,

:18:32.:18:34.

Yorkshire batsman Joe Root's been named England captain,

:18:35.:18:36.

replacing Alastair Cook, who resigned last week.

:18:37.:18:38.

His deputy is 25-year-old Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes -

:18:39.:18:40.

continuing his incredible rollercoaster of a career so far.

:18:41.:18:46.

And it's hardly been plain sailing for our football clubs, either.

:18:47.:18:51.

Just the one winner this week among our league clubs.

:18:52.:18:53.

at the North East Football Writers' awards?

:18:54.:18:57.

It was nice to have my charity work award. And congratulations to Jordan

:18:58.:19:05.

Pickford and Jermaine Defoe, two worthy winners.

:19:06.:19:07.

And well done, too, to Middlesbrough -

:19:08.:19:10.

holding in-form Everton to a goalless draw.

:19:11.:19:11.

Creeping towards safety, in a monsoon at the Riverside.

:19:12.:19:18.

Did well at Spurs last week. Good performance from Middlesbrough. They

:19:19.:19:26.

needed the goalkeeper to play well. Best defence outside of the top six.

:19:27.:19:29.

Many Middlesbrough fans would have taken a point before the game. With

:19:30.:19:34.

all these drawers, it shows some grit and determination. They need a

:19:35.:19:39.

few wins, though. Three goals in the last three games, they are going to

:19:40.:19:43.

have to win five out of the next 13. They have got seven winnable games.

:19:44.:19:49.

They almost pinched it right at the death. When you bring on Rudy

:19:50.:19:56.

Gestede, he's renowned for being good in you, and that was a save

:19:57.:20:04.

from Joel Robles. Once again, will we have played really well against a

:20:05.:20:11.

really good team who are in good form, so once again, we have to say

:20:12.:20:13.

well done to the players. Light snow, with temperatures

:20:14.:20:18.

dropping to minus 11! That's what Sunderland's players

:20:19.:20:20.

can look forward to, on their mid-season break

:20:21.:20:22.

in New York. Not sure if that was a distraction

:20:23.:20:24.

on Saturday, Steve - can't imagine it'll be a barrel

:20:25.:20:29.

of laughs I was on their trip to Dubai last

:20:30.:20:41.

year. It was a great warm weather trip, a great bonding trip. They

:20:42.:20:45.

actually started well on Saturday. First 20 minutes, pretty confident.

:20:46.:20:49.

Southampton get a lucky break and it seemed to knock the stuffing out of

:20:50.:20:53.

Sunderland. It came off the arm of Manolo Gabbiadini. This was the

:20:54.:20:58.

killer blow on the stroke of half-time. Yes, good play from him

:20:59.:21:04.

but a little bit too easy. How many goals how they conceded from crosses

:21:05.:21:09.

this year? They changed at half-time to a back three or a back four. But

:21:10.:21:13.

space doesn't score goals, you have two pick players up. You expect the

:21:14.:21:21.

reaction at 2-0 at half-time, but it didn't come.

:21:22.:21:26.

The expectation was on us to win and at times this season we have not

:21:27.:21:31.

taken it. We had a great chance to move out of the bottom three today

:21:32.:21:36.

if results are gone for us. Any game we don't pick anything up is a game

:21:37.:21:39.

lost because the games are running out, so we have to win some so that

:21:40.:21:43.

we can stay up. It is as simple as that.

:21:44.:21:45.

Newcastle reclaimed top spot in the Championship after beating Wolves at

:21:46.:21:47.

Molineux - Alexsandr Mitrovic the matchwinner, but he - and United -

:21:48.:21:50.

How many times do we see teams at the top of the league riding their

:21:51.:21:58.

luck? You have two. Teams at the top seem to get the lucky breaks. We

:21:59.:22:01.

have seen this many times this season. Aleksandr Mitrovic is

:22:02.:22:09.

involved in what. He plays on the edge, an old-fashioned centreboard.

:22:10.:22:11.

This is the one that cautioned. After that he is treading a fine

:22:12.:22:16.

line as an experienced manager can see. Wolves kept plugging away

:22:17.:22:23.

without really getting at Newcastle. This was the image -- the incident

:22:24.:22:33.

where he could have got sent off, Ikeme. You can see why the referee

:22:34.:22:37.

has given him the benefit of the doubt. They get another break. He

:22:38.:22:42.

becomes active. If you work hard, you get lucky breaks and Newcastle

:22:43.:22:46.

are working very hard. Off at half-time, managed to weather the

:22:47.:22:55.

storm but today, Benitez was still unhappy at the treatment of

:22:56.:22:56.

Aleksandr Mitrovic. He did absolutely nothing,

:22:57.:23:09.

absolutely nothing. And then the second one, you forget that and the

:23:10.:23:11.

third one is not there. -- not fair. In League Two, Hartlepool are being

:23:12.:23:15.

dragged into the relegation battle, and Carlisle are clinging to that

:23:16.:23:18.

third promotion spot after being hammered 4-1

:23:19.:23:20.

at home by Blackpool. Manager Keith Curle said some

:23:21.:23:22.

of the defending was "pathetic". You have to admire his honesty. It

:23:23.:23:28.

is too easy, here. They back off and back off. And a bad thing for

:23:29.:23:32.

Carlisle is that the chasing pack have caught them up. If Lookman win,

:23:33.:23:37.

Carlisle can be out of the top three. Have you been given a back

:23:38.:23:43.

pass like that? Yes, probably a few, defensive lapses have cost them.

They will not want to watch that one again. No matter what the level,

:23:51.:23:55.

lapses in concentration did not help. And they have a sniff at the

:23:56.:24:05.

play-offs? Yes, just hovering some points outside there, and a good

:24:06.:24:09.

away win. FA Cup win next weekend and we will give you tonight. -- FA

Cup next weekend. On to rugby union,

:24:14.:24:17.

and Tamara Taylor - from Darlington Mowden Park Sharks -

:24:18.:24:19.

celebrated her 100th England cap in style at the weekend,

:24:20.:24:21.

as the Red Roses scored 11 tries On the scoresheet -

player of the match Katy McLean from South Shields and captain

:24:25.:24:28.

Sarah Hunter from Newcastle. Meanwhile, in the Premiership,

:24:29.:24:30.

Newcastle Falcons had to settle for two losing bonus points at Sale

:24:31.:24:32.

Sharks. Juan Pablo Socino grabbed

:24:33.:24:35.

the first try of the game, and there was a hat-trick

:24:36.:24:39.

for Vereniki Goneva, in a game where the lead

:24:40.:24:41.

frequently changed hands. But a late penalty saw

:24:42.:24:44.

Sale snatch the win. You could say that very slowly. Some

:24:45.:25:04.

snow yesterday on the Pennines. Yes, it has been Artic recently. And the

:25:05.:25:07.

weather pictures tonight sum that up. These have been taken over the

:25:08.:25:12.

past few days. This one from Swaledale. A lovely wintry scene.

:25:13.:25:20.

And the beautiful view. You can see the snow line on the fells. Thanks

:25:21.:25:25.

to Paul for that one. Over the next few days there is change on the way.

:25:26.:25:29.

If you are fed up with the cold weather, things should turn milder.

:25:30.:25:34.

Patchy rain at times and it will be breezy but temperatures and on the

:25:35.:25:37.

rise. Not writing off winter just yet, but the next few days, less

:25:38.:25:42.

cold. Tonight, lots of cloud around, misplaces dry, some breaks where you

:25:43.:25:48.

are sheltered from the breeze. Enough breaks in the cloud to keep

:25:49.:25:52.

most places frost free. Overnight lows around three Celsius. Tomorrow,

:25:53.:26:00.

starts off a dry day, cloud breaking more readily in eastern areas than

:26:01.:26:04.

it did today. As well as Cumbria seen some good, sunny spells, most

:26:05.:26:06.

of the North East and North Yorkshire should see some sun as

:26:07.:26:11.

well. That north-easterly wind not as strong as it was today so it

:26:12.:26:16.

should feel less cold. Temperatures at around sixes and sevens in the

:26:17.:26:21.

east. Milder in the West where you have more shelter from a breeze.

:26:22.:26:25.

High pressure in the least recently, low pressure to the South West, and

:26:26.:26:27.

the balance tips over the next few the balance tips over the next few

:26:28.:26:30.

days with low pressure going up to the north and high pressure becoming

:26:31.:26:33.

focused on the south, and that changes the wind direction. That

:26:34.:26:37.

brings as those milder south-westerly winds. There are some

:26:38.:26:42.

fronts around and there will be some rain and it will be breezy at times.

:26:43.:26:46.

Heading towards the middle of the week you will notice temperatures

:26:47.:26:48.

starting to climb into double figures by Wednesday, albeit with a

:26:49.:26:54.

fair amount of cloud. Enough cloud and a breeze to keep most places

:26:55.:26:57.

frost free over the coming few nights. There will be some rain at

:26:58.:27:02.

times on Thursday but many places will see temperatures reaching

:27:03.:27:05.

double figures. And if you think you have got the weather picture which

:27:06.:27:10.

should feature on February page of our calendar, let's it.

:27:11.:27:23.

Gerry Jackson will have the late news. Goodbye.
