Hello, welcome to Wednesday's Look North.

:00:07.:00:07.

Tonight: the operation that could change his life.

:00:08.:00:09.

We're with the family of Finley Ingles, the five year-old

:00:10.:00:11.

boy who's travelled to America, where doctors will try to shrink

:00:12.:00:14.

I cannot put into words just how much he needs this surgery. It will

:00:15.:00:26.

change his life. It is what we fought for four months.

:00:27.:00:27.

Also tonight: Anger as traditional school nurse scheme

:00:28.:00:29.

is axed across Cumbria - head teachers say it'll

:00:30.:00:31.

Going for gold: Ramsdens - the Teesside pawnbroker -

:00:32.:00:35.

Why a museum in Moscow is honouring a famous North Yorkshire vet.

:00:36.:00:43.

In sport, we hear from England's new cricket captain

:00:44.:00:46.

And The Magpies cling on to top spot after a thrilling

:00:47.:00:51.

They've travelled around 5,000 miles to the United States for the surgery

:00:52.:01:12.

Five-year-old Finley Ingles from Middlesbrough has a rare brain

:01:13.:01:17.

tumour which can't be operated on in this country.

:01:18.:01:21.

His family say he currently suffers up to 15 seizures a day.

:01:22.:01:24.

A huge fundraising campaign raised a staggering ?200,000 to pay

:01:25.:01:28.

for the ground-breaking surgery in Texas.

:01:29.:01:31.

Stuart Whincup is out there with Finley and the youngster's family,

:01:32.:01:34.

After years of planning and tireless fundraising, they made it to

:01:35.:01:50.

Houston. This trip, they say, is Finley's last hope.

:01:51.:02:03.

Finley's brain tumour can't be removed in the UK because it is too

:02:04.:02:11.

deep, so surgeons here at Texas's Children's Hospital will now use

:02:12.:02:15.

lasers to try to shrink it. It is everything. Just absolutely

:02:16.:02:18.

everything. I can't put into words just how much Finley needs this

:02:19.:02:23.

surgery. It will change his life and that is what we have fought for four

:02:24.:02:26.

months, but it is still quite nerve wracking to know that you're going

:02:27.:02:29.

to hand your child over for a procedure.

:02:30.:02:35.

Finley's online fundraising campaign started slowly, but support quickly

:02:36.:02:39.

grew, as a crusty side, people became aware of his story. --

:02:40.:02:40.

Teesside. Since leaving the UK a fortnight

:02:41.:02:53.

ago, Finley has had daily tests, scans and appointments. Entire days

:02:54.:02:57.

have been spent in waiting rooms, but he does have a way of passing

:02:58.:03:05.

the time. Bob the builder... Can we fix it?

:03:06.:03:12.

More than 1500 people donated to tee's fundraising cause so he could

:03:13.:03:16.

travel from Teesside to Texas for this surgery, and as well as the big

:03:17.:03:21.

cheques from local businesses, there were his classmates and school

:03:22.:03:23.

friends who donated their pocket money. Also, Finley can have the

:03:24.:03:29.

surgery Finley believes good changes lie. -- Finley's family believe.

:03:30.:03:35.

If you come across him, he is an amazing little boy, he is absolutely

:03:36.:03:40.

gorgeous. He just trundles and threw it all. Seizure after seizure,

:03:41.:03:43.

appointment after appointment. He just gets on with it, and... We

:03:44.:03:50.

can't ask for anything more. He is just an amazing little boy.

:03:51.:03:55.

And we'll be following Finley's progress throughout the rest

:03:56.:04:00.

Teachers in Cumbria say plans to scrap the county's school nurses

:04:01.:04:13.

The council says its six school nurses are "unaffordable".

:04:14.:04:19.

It's replacing them with a service based in Carlisle,

:04:20.:04:22.

and schools will have to pay for it from their existing budgets.

:04:23.:04:25.

Here's our correspondent Mark Denten.

:04:26.:04:33.

The school nurse, often cheaply dubbed the nit nurse, but only ever

:04:34.:04:40.

behind her back, used to be a key part of every school. Cumbria still

:04:41.:04:44.

has 11 of them for its 69,000 people, but not for long. The

:04:45.:04:50.

council says the ?927,000 service is unaffordable. It is being replaced

:04:51.:04:55.

by six school-age health coordinators, based in Carlisle.

:04:56.:04:58.

Schools will have to pay for them out of existing budgets.

:04:59.:05:04.

What we are being asked to do is buy back the school nurse service, but

:05:05.:05:08.

the implication of that is, the service that was previously paid for

:05:09.:05:13.

through financing and health, will be shifting to being paid for by an

:05:14.:05:16.

education budget. Is there a money for heads to say,

:05:17.:05:21.

we can pay for that? It sounds like there isn't.

:05:22.:05:24.

Quite simply, no, there isn't. There has been a 13% fall in

:05:25.:05:29.

November of school nurses since 2010, leaving 2606 NHS nurses across

:05:30.:05:33.

the country, according to recent figures.

:05:34.:05:36.

You know, children are many versions of us. They have mental health

:05:37.:05:42.

problems, stress, emotional concerns, they are victims of

:05:43.:05:45.

bullying, and all of those things, they need support from a health

:05:46.:05:51.

practitioner to deal with. But the County Council says

:05:52.:05:53.

scrapping its school nurses will actually result in a better service

:05:54.:05:58.

for the county's children. We are trying to integrate the whole

:05:59.:06:04.

service and make sure that more people are, I say, responsible for

:06:05.:06:07.

the health of our young people, rather than its just being, oh,

:06:08.:06:12.

well, we will wait until the school nurse comes and they can deal with

:06:13.:06:17.

it. It is everyone's responsibility. I don't like to really imagine

:06:18.:06:20.

children going out without the health care and support that they

:06:21.:06:26.

need, or children having their education impaired by loss of

:06:27.:06:31.

services, but it is quite clear that with fewer teachers, fewer school

:06:32.:06:36.

nurses, we are sailing into very difficult times.

:06:37.:06:40.

Cumbria's school nurses will be replaced from April.

:06:41.:06:42.

A wealthy businessman has told a court that claims he abused boys

:06:43.:06:46.

75-year-old Colin Gregg, from Gosforth in Newcastle,

:06:47.:06:52.

is accused of indecently assaulting four boys over a period

:06:53.:06:55.

Giving evidence at Leeds Crown Court he denied all the allegations.

:06:56.:07:00.

When asked by his barrister if he had ever sexually abused

:07:01.:07:04.

The court has heard Colin Gregg - a former head teacher -

:07:05.:07:10.

had helped build the Gregg's bakery chain, and raise millions

:07:11.:07:12.

He denies nine counts of indecent assault on boys aged 10 to 14,

:07:13.:07:17.

Unemployment in the north east has jumped by 11,000,

:07:18.:07:22.

to stand at 90,000 - that's 7% of the workforce.

:07:23.:07:25.

In Cumbria, 4,650 people claimed JobSeekers' Allowance in January,

:07:26.:07:30.

a rise of about 200 from the month before.

:07:31.:07:34.

And in North Yorkshire, the total stands at 4,540,

:07:35.:07:38.

Council tax in North Yorkshire is going up by almost four percent.

:07:39.:07:45.

The increase means an extra ?45 a year for an average house in band D.

:07:46.:07:50.

Two percent of the increase will go towards paying

:07:51.:07:53.

The Prime Minister has insisted she remains fully committed to plans

:07:54.:07:58.

for a new nuclear power station next to Sellafield amid growing

:07:59.:08:02.

Theresa May was in the Cumbrian constituency

:08:03.:08:06.

of Copeland, ahead of the upcoming by-election there.

:08:07.:08:09.

But she refused to be drawn on whether the Government will match

:08:10.:08:12.

Labour's pledge to underwrite the proposed plant at

:08:13.:08:15.

Yesterday the scheme's main investor Toshiba said it

:08:16.:08:20.

would look to sell its stake before construction began.

:08:21.:08:29.

It is the Conservative government that is putting nuclear back into

:08:30.:08:35.

the UK. It is the conservative government that has agreed new

:08:36.:08:39.

nuclear build. We recognise the importance of nuclear. Jeremy Corbyn

:08:40.:08:43.

was asked five times in one interview to back more side. He

:08:44.:08:48.

would not do it. It is the Conservative government that

:08:49.:08:50.

recognises the importance of Moorside and the nuclear industry in

:08:51.:08:51.

the UK. Well, the future of jobs

:08:52.:08:53.

in the nuclear industry is just one of the issues in next week's

:08:54.:08:55.

Copeland by-election. Labour is defending a 2,500 majority

:08:56.:08:57.

in the coastal constituency which the party has held

:08:58.:09:00.

for more than 80 years. But a strong challenge

:09:01.:09:02.

from the Conservatives have led Our political correspondent

on the campaign trail. The banners, the leaflets,

:09:12.:09:13.

the pets bearing party colours - it looks like typical by-election,

:09:14.:09:16.

but the result in Copeland The bookies have made

been Labour territory, and governing parties don't

worker Trudy Harrison. It is obviously huge ask after 68

:09:37.:09:49.

years of Labour rule, and it is testament to people wanting change

:09:50.:09:50.

here. -- And questions about the area's

:09:51.:09:54.

biggest employer Sellafield have Jeremy Corbyn, for many many years,

:09:55.:10:01.

has campaigned against nuclear. The evidence is there at Hinkley

:10:02.:10:04.

Point C. We cannot afford to have that kind of concern in our

:10:05.:10:06.

community. It would be devastating. But Labour is fighting back,

:10:07.:10:08.

innsisting it not only supports the industry but is willing

:10:09.:10:11.

to underwrite a new Government needs to intervene now to

:10:12.:10:21.

make sure we have security of those jobs and that Moorside actually

:10:22.:10:24.

happens. This corner of West Cumbria is

:10:25.:10:29.

beautiful, but it is also geographically isolated, feeding the

:10:30.:10:32.

feeling among voters that they are too often forgotten by national

:10:33.:10:33.

politicians. A feeling that's heightened

:10:34.:10:35.

by a threat to services The proposals are opposed

:10:36.:10:37.

by all the parties. But Labour candidate

:10:38.:10:40.

Gillian Troughton, a former NHS doctor,

:10:41.:10:41.

points the finger at ministers. We need to make sure we get out and

:10:42.:10:51.

vote Labour and make sure we save our hospital, you know that.

:10:52.:10:55.

But what about that other tricky issue?

:10:56.:10:57.

Is Jeremy Corbyn a help or hindrance to campaign?

:10:58.:11:01.

Jeremy has been up to Copeland twice during this campaign, and I have

:11:02.:11:06.

spoken to him, and we have discussed the issues. This by-election is

:11:07.:11:09.

about what people are telling me on the doorstep. It is about investment

:11:10.:11:12.

in this area. Someone who definitely does see the

:11:13.:11:19.

Labour leader as an asset, at least to her campaign, is the Ukip

:11:20.:11:21.

candidate. We have been knocking on doors in

:11:22.:11:24.

Labour areas, and a lot of them are anti Corbin and have been saying, I

:11:25.:11:28.

am never voting Labour while we have the Jeremy Corbyn, so they are going

:11:29.:11:33.

to ask, because they are also saying, we could never vote

:11:34.:11:34.

Conservative. Majority here voted to leave the EU.

:11:35.:11:38.

But the Lib Dems say the Government's Brexit strategy

:11:39.:11:41.

Hard Brexit has huge implications, and people are only just starting to

:11:42.:11:46.

uncover some of them. So, for example, the government is

:11:47.:11:51.

determined to pull it out of Euratom, which has implications the

:11:52.:11:53.

nuclear industry here. For the anti-nuclear Green

:11:54.:11:55.

party, a constituency dependent on the industry

:11:56.:11:57.

might appear unpromising. We have had MPs for the past 70 odd

:11:58.:12:07.

years who have been pro-nuclear. I think it is time to think about

:12:08.:12:11.

diversifying our economy and providing better economies for

:12:12.:12:11.

people who want a well-paid job. Also standing in Copeland,

:12:12.:12:17.

independents Though it's the ebb and flow

:12:18.:12:18.

between Labour and the Conservatives that's likely to decide

:12:19.:12:22.

this crucial contest. The Teesside pawnbroker, Ramsdens,

:12:23.:12:25.

made its stock market debut today. The Midlesbrough-based business

:12:26.:12:28.

is probably best known for sponsoring the shirts

:12:29.:12:32.

of the town's football club - one of only four UK-based companies

:12:33.:12:35.

to do that in the Premier League. Starting with a single shop

:12:36.:12:38.

on Stockton, it's now worth more Here's our Business

:12:39.:12:42.

Correspondent, Ian Reeve. Mandy has worked for this Teesside

:12:43.:12:49.

pawnbroking business - Ramsdens - for more than 20 years.

:12:50.:12:53.

It's changed immensely. Gone up market...does far

:12:54.:13:00.

more than pawnbroking. When I started over 20 years ago, we

:13:01.:13:09.

had tee branches. Now we have over 130 branches. We offered three

:13:10.:13:13.

products, and pawnbroking was the key factor. Everybody used to use

:13:14.:13:18.

pawnbroking. Then we used to did cheque-cashing and if you sales.

:13:19.:13:22.

Now, you can see that we do over ten products and services.

:13:23.:13:24.

Three quarters of Ramsden's business is now in foreign exchange.

:13:25.:13:26.

It changed over ?300 million last year.

:13:27.:13:28.

And figures like that - and future growth -

:13:29.:13:30.

have brought it a stock market flotation today,

:13:31.:13:32.

But is there still something of a stigma about pawnbroking?

:13:33.:13:45.

People who don't understand it, yes, there is. People who use it now,

:13:46.:13:51.

because it is absolutely transparent. It is a loan against an

:13:52.:13:55.

asset, so the person has an asset to start with. They are raising cash

:13:56.:13:59.

against that asset, then they repay the loan and they get that asset

:14:00.:14:01.

back. That happens 80% of the time. Of course, on Teesside,

:14:02.:14:03.

the Middlesbrough-based business It's the football

:14:04.:14:05.

club's shirt sponsor. Something that's sent its logo

:14:06.:14:07.

around the world and brought I think the average figure is about

:14:08.:14:18.

20 million people watch a Premier League football match, so obviously,

:14:19.:14:21.

Ramsden's are enjoying that. The good thing about them is, they are a

:14:22.:14:26.

local company, and so obviously, from local company, they get access

:14:27.:14:30.

to the match day and can bring clients to the executive boxes to

:14:31.:14:33.

enjoy hospitality. They get advertising within the ground.

:14:34.:14:34.

And now Ramsden's is also Middlesbrough's only stock

:14:35.:14:36.

forecast. From tonight, a Moscow museum

:15:30.:15:32.

is hosting a special tribute The works of vet and

author James Herriot - real name Alf Wight,

:15:36.:15:41.

who was born in Sunderland - And the State Museum

:15:42.:15:43.

in the Russian capital has invited staff from the "World

:15:44.:15:49.

of James Herriot Museum" in Thirsk, after they sent material to help

:15:50.:15:52.

with the new exhibition. From the Yorkshire Dales to the

:15:53.:16:17.

world, the work of James Herriot, or Alf Wight, is still popular

:16:18.:16:21.

everywhere. And in return, the World Of James Herriot has had hundreds of

:16:22.:16:27.

visitors. In the next few days, the Russians will be paying tribute to

:16:28.:16:29.

the Yorkshire writer. There is going to be a large and

:16:30.:16:32.

very important exhibition in a museum in Moscow, and so it is

:16:33.:16:35.

fantastic, isn't it? It is just staggering. Dad knew how popular he

:16:36.:16:40.

was all over the world, before he died, thankfully, but still, these

:16:41.:16:44.

new things are happening. Still, the television series is not on

:16:45.:16:48.

prime-time TV, still there is this interest.

:16:49.:16:55.

An absolutely amazing legacy. Back the great man himself ventured to

:16:56.:16:57.

Russia. In 1961, a long time ago, he took

:16:58.:17:00.

some sheep on a boat to Russia as the vet in charge. He documented it

:17:01.:17:06.

in some of his books. He was able to ring home, and this was unusual in

:17:07.:17:10.

those days, but as I say, he was in this gale, and it was my mum and

:17:11.:17:16.

dad's when it an adversary when he rang, November the 5th, 1961. --

wedding anniversary. He had left a card with me for mum to open, and

:17:19.:17:26.

inside, it said" from Russia, with Love".

:17:27.:17:29.

Rather nice. From tonight, a small team from the museum in Thirsk is in

:17:30.:17:32.

Moscow to help launch the exhibition.

:17:33.:17:34.

I got an e-mail from the State Museum in Moscow and it said that

:17:35.:17:39.

they were going to put on an exhibition to celebrate the

:17:40.:17:44.

hundredth anniversary of the life of Alf Wight, James Herriot, and we

:17:45.:17:47.

were absolutely delighted and gobsmacked, really, because it is a

:17:48.:17:53.

tremendous accolade to have James Herriot, Alf Wight, being honoured

:17:54.:17:58.

in Russia. In the stately zein. And at the end of the trip, Ian will

:17:59.:18:02.

be presenting his Russian counterpart with a miniature

:18:03.:18:05.

statuette of Alf Wight, as a permanent reminder of this

:18:06.:18:06.

extraordinary exhibition. What an amazing story!

:18:07.:18:23.

Fantastic. I love the TV series. And now, the sport.

:18:24.:18:25.

England's new cricket captain Joe Root has been speaking

:18:26.:18:27.

for the first time about taking over from Alastair Cook

:18:28.:18:30.

Root was formally introduced as new skipper back

with Yorkshire before becoming an England regular.

:19:01.:19:03.

I could be within the team and helping support, and now I have this

:19:04.:19:07.

opportunity, it is a huge honour, and I am just really looking forward

:19:08.:19:09.

to putting my stamp on things. It could have been so much better

:19:10.:19:12.

but it could have been worse. With second-placed Brighton

The show itself is a visual feast, a dazzling combination

I certainly wouldn't advise you to try this one at home!

Expect the impossible becoming possible. There is a storyline where
