A political earthquake in Cumbria after Labour loses | :00:00. | :00:08.
Copeland to the Tories - a seat it previously held | :00:09. | :00:11.
The people of Copeland are going to see that they have elected a member | :00:12. | :00:19.
of Parliament who is going to listen to their concerns, | :00:20. | :00:21.
But she will ensure that she delivers for the people of Copeland. | :00:22. | :00:30.
We'll be live in Whitehaven with the latest. | :00:31. | :00:32.
People power - a lunchtime march to oppose plans | :00:33. | :00:35.
for a retail park and hundreds of new homes in Northumberland. | :00:36. | :00:38.
Thousands of jobs are promised when this fertiliser mine | :00:39. | :00:41.
Today it was named after the geologists who discovered it. | :00:42. | :00:45.
And the offensive, anonymous letter writer, targeting people who don't | :00:46. | :00:48.
In sport, the battle for Premier League survival and championship | :00:49. | :01:03.
promotion hots up this weekend. And it's tense at the top of League 2 | :01:04. | :01:10.
for Carlisle's Curle, head of a huge match with a special guest | :01:11. | :01:11.
appearance. They had a quiet confidence, | :01:12. | :01:19.
but no more than that. Just before three o'clock | :01:20. | :01:23.
this morning, though, that feeling among Conservatives | :01:24. | :01:28.
in Copeland turned to jubilation when they snatched | :01:29. | :01:30.
the seat from Labour. The area had been in Labour's hands | :01:31. | :01:32.
for more than 80 years, and yesterday's by-election came | :01:33. | :01:34.
about after the surprise Well, today Theresa May was among | :01:35. | :01:37.
the first to travel to Cumbria to congratulate the | :01:38. | :01:42.
new MP, Trudy Harrison. But there are huge | :01:43. | :01:44.
questions for Labour. Let's join Megan Paterson, | :01:45. | :01:47.
who's in Whitehaven tonight. Good evening. It's no exaggeration | :01:48. | :02:00.
to say that this was Labour heartland. The former MP Jamie Reed | :02:01. | :02:04.
retained his seat at the last general election in 2015, with a | :02:05. | :02:10.
majority of over 2500 votes. But this is Labour land no more. Trudy | :02:11. | :02:15.
Harrison, the Conservative candidate, took the polls yesterday. | :02:16. | :02:20.
She won the seat with a majority of over 2000 votes. Pushing into second | :02:21. | :02:24.
place, Gillian Troughton from Labour. And into third place, | :02:25. | :02:28.
Rebecca Hanson from the Liberal Democrats. Going into the polls | :02:29. | :02:32.
yesterday, the bookies were tipping the Conservatives as the favourites, | :02:33. | :02:35.
but this doesn't make it any less of a surprise. As much interest here in | :02:36. | :02:40.
Copeland and Cumbria as it is across the country. | :02:41. | :02:42.
Copeland was the focus of lots of media attention today. | :02:43. | :02:45.
Not so long ago the headlines here would have been | :02:46. | :02:47.
In this area's change from Red to Blue is a remarkable reality. | :02:48. | :02:58.
I'm absolutely delighted to be able to be here with the new member | :02:59. | :03:01.
of Parliament for Copeland, Trudy Harrison. | :03:02. | :03:03.
This is an astounding victory for the Conservative Party, | :03:04. | :03:11.
Campaigners fought on many issues here, but these two | :03:12. | :03:17.
were perhaps the most divisive - the protection of services | :03:18. | :03:19.
at the West Cumberland Hospital, and the future of nuclear power | :03:20. | :03:22.
For many voters, Jeremy Corbyn's previous views | :03:23. | :03:31.
The Corbyn factor was a reason for defeat. | :03:32. | :03:39.
But those in his campaign team say that's not the case. | :03:40. | :03:42.
Jeremy Corbyn's been the leader of the Labour Party | :03:43. | :03:46.
And Jeremy didn't certainly, as far as I was concerned, | :03:47. | :03:50.
Jeremy didn't crop up on the doorstep. | :03:51. | :03:56.
We think it's just a protest against Corbyn. Do you think the | :03:57. | :04:11.
Conservatives will represent people in Copeland better? Not really, no. | :04:12. | :04:16.
I think it's just a protest because people don't like Corbyn. The first | :04:17. | :04:21.
time in my life I've ever voted Conservative. Because we've got a | :04:22. | :04:24.
Conservative government and I think she'll have more chance of accessing | :04:25. | :04:31.
the ministers. It all comes down to who is leading the party. That's | :04:32. | :04:33.
what it's all about. Whether it's the leader's | :04:34. | :04:38.
stance, or disaffection with the Labour Party as a whole, | :04:39. | :04:40.
the appetite for change was made The challenge for Trudy Harrison | :04:41. | :04:43.
is to meet the electorate's I'm really looking forward | :04:44. | :04:47.
to getting on with the job. I'm very much looking forward | :04:48. | :04:52.
to going down to London on Monday and making sure that we deliver | :04:53. | :04:55.
on the plan that I've been pledging Trudy Harrison and there, raring to | :04:56. | :05:11.
start work. Labour activists here say they have a job ahead of them as | :05:12. | :05:16.
well, trying to begin crucial support after that dramatic defeat. | :05:17. | :05:18.
Megan, thanks very much for that. Well, our Political Editor, | :05:19. | :05:23.
Richard Moss, is with me now. So what does this result mean for | :05:24. | :05:26.
politics in our part of the world? It's fair to say it was a safe seat. | :05:27. | :05:32.
The majority was relatively narrow for Labour. The nuclear industry was | :05:33. | :05:36.
a problem because of Corbyn's long-standing views on that. But | :05:37. | :05:40.
there was also a trump card. Major concerns about the NHS moving to | :05:41. | :05:50.
Cumberland Hospital. It highlights a new Conservative threat in some of | :05:51. | :05:53.
the seats in our region. The kind of swing we saw in Copeland would sweep | :05:54. | :05:56.
away the current boundaries. Middlesbrough South, Darlington, | :05:57. | :06:03.
Bishop Auckland. Even the Labour MP in Workington. But of course there | :06:04. | :06:06.
are other issues which came out of the by-election. Copeland shed a | :06:07. | :06:11.
light on those - the isolation of the constituency, the problems at | :06:12. | :06:15.
the hospital, the new Conservative MP will have to go down to London | :06:16. | :06:19.
and try to get those tackled. The Prime Minister was pretty equivocal | :06:20. | :06:23.
about the hospital on her visit. There are other issues - Road, rail, | :06:24. | :06:28.
broadband reception. A lot of politicians have been surprised by | :06:29. | :06:30.
what they found in Copeland. Now they have to rely on her to | :06:31. | :06:34.
incorporate both and get some action. Richard, thank you. | :06:35. | :06:39.
More than 1,000 demonstrators have been marching in Morpeth, | :06:40. | :06:41.
angry about plans for a retail park and hundreds of new homes | :06:42. | :06:44.
on the site of the current Northumberland County | :06:45. | :06:46.
Labour councillors insist redeveloping the 37 acres of land | :06:47. | :06:52.
and moving county hall to Ashington will save money | :06:53. | :06:55.
But protestors claim it'll destroy the town's historic character. | :06:56. | :07:00.
Here's our Political Correspondent, Luke Walton. | :07:01. | :07:06.
They've long had Northumberland County Council on their doorstep. | :07:07. | :07:11.
Today the people of Morpeth came out in force to accuse that same local | :07:12. | :07:15.
authority of threatening to blight their town. | :07:16. | :07:17.
Their target - a multi-million pound scheme to redevelop | :07:18. | :07:20.
The heart is being ripped out of Morpeth. | :07:21. | :07:24.
All the shops will lose out if they put supermarkets. | :07:25. | :07:29.
And my other big concern is putting a McDonald's opposite a school. | :07:30. | :07:32.
We're on the verge of having 3,300 new houses in this town. | :07:33. | :07:39.
And the character of Morpeth as a market town will change | :07:40. | :07:42.
These protesters say Morpeth's already had more than its fair | :07:43. | :07:50.
share of development, with housing estates | :07:51. | :07:52.
But Northumberland's Labour leadership see the proposals | :07:53. | :07:58.
as part of a wider plan to boost regeneration. | :07:59. | :08:00.
The retail park developers, Maple Grove, said in a statement | :08:01. | :08:04.
that the new shops will create employment and complement | :08:05. | :08:07.
What I fear will happen is that this retail edge town development | :08:08. | :08:16.
will take away people from shopping in the centre of Morpeth. | :08:17. | :08:20.
They'll feel there's no need to go shopping in the centre of Morpeth, | :08:21. | :08:23.
and that will just kill Morpeth dead. | :08:24. | :08:25.
Northumberland Council wouldn't do an interview because the planning | :08:26. | :08:27.
application was active, but said all views would be | :08:28. | :08:30.
It's previously argued that moving its HQ from Morpeth to a smaller, | :08:31. | :08:37.
more efficient building in Ashington would save taxpayers' money | :08:38. | :08:39.
Claims hotly contested by critics, who vowed to fight on. | :08:40. | :08:50.
We'll take this to court, we'll fight it all the way. | :08:51. | :08:53.
There's grounds why this should be refused. | :08:54. | :08:54.
There's over 1,500 objections on the website against this. | :08:55. | :09:00.
Over 1,000 people turned up today to show the strength of the feeling. | :09:01. | :09:03.
With council elections also due in Northumberland this spring, | :09:04. | :09:10.
this bitter planning dispute looks set to become a bruising | :09:11. | :09:12.
An outbreak of avian flu has been found at a farm near Haltwhistle. | :09:13. | :09:22.
Defra says a three kilometre protection zone has been | :09:23. | :09:24.
The H5N8 virus was found in a flock of around 35 chickens. | :09:25. | :09:29.
Plans to move consultant-led maternity services out | :09:30. | :09:33.
of the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven were opposed by 85% | :09:34. | :09:38.
of the people who responded to a public consultation. | :09:39. | :09:41.
That's according to a report published today by Cumbria's | :09:42. | :09:43.
NHS managers say recruitment problems mean a number of services, | :09:44. | :09:54.
including maternity, would be better centralised | :09:55. | :09:56.
Pirelli's been given the go-ahead to expand its Carlisle factory, | :09:57. | :09:59.
in a move the firm says will secure almost 4,000 jobs. | :10:00. | :10:03.
The tyre manufacturer is set to add a new extension to the plant, | :10:04. | :10:07.
which will be used on tyres produced there to "cure" them - | :10:08. | :10:10.
that's a process which gives the product its final shape. | :10:11. | :10:12.
More than 100 teaching assistants held a protest outside | :10:13. | :10:14.
They're concerned they'll face substantial pay cuts | :10:15. | :10:18.
Plans to re-hire assistants on the new arrangement | :10:19. | :10:23.
were suspended, following strike action in December - | :10:24. | :10:27.
but Unions say the threat hasn't gone away. | :10:28. | :10:29.
What we want? Fair pay! | :10:30. | :10:32.
When do we want it? Now! | :10:33. | :10:35.
These teaching assistants say they're still facing a 23% pay cut. | :10:36. | :10:45.
Plans to re-hire them on a new contract are | :10:46. | :10:47.
But many staff are concerned it's a stalling tactic by the council, | :10:48. | :10:53.
and that they will, in the end, have the new contracts | :10:54. | :10:55.
I am going to be losing nearly 300 a week. | :10:56. | :10:59.
And I'm a single parent with a disabled son. | :11:00. | :11:01.
I've done this all of my working life. | :11:02. | :11:07.
They're actually cutting people who can help education. | :11:08. | :11:09.
And a 23% pay cut, a 23% pay cut is ridiculous. | :11:10. | :11:13.
Durham County Council says it's working hard with recognised trade | :11:14. | :11:18.
unions to complete the proposed review of the roles, functions, | :11:19. | :11:21.
job descriptions and activities of teaching assistants. | :11:22. | :11:23.
And that's being done with the support of two work streams. | :11:24. | :11:25.
One comprising of 15 teaching assistants, | :11:26. | :11:27.
But, clearly, it's going to take more than that to convince these | :11:28. | :11:33.
A new mine in North Yorkshire that'll create 1,000 jobs | :11:34. | :11:42.
The scheme, near Whitby, is to be called the Woodsmith Mine - | :11:43. | :11:48.
a contraction of the surnames of two geologists who worked | :11:49. | :11:51.
The duo identified the massive underground | :11:52. | :11:57.
resources of polyhalite - a mineral that can be used | :11:58. | :12:00.
Our Business Correspondent, Ian Reeve, reports. | :12:01. | :12:03.
The first work on the first mine to be sunk in this country | :12:04. | :12:06.
Officially unveiling the name of this new mine. | :12:07. | :12:16.
Millions of tonnes of the minimal polyhaylite are beneath | :12:17. | :12:28.
the surface here near Whitby, resourced to be used as a fertiliser | :12:29. | :12:31.
and identified by these two geologist whose surnames, | :12:32. | :12:33.
Woods and Smith, give the mine its name. | :12:34. | :12:38.
Very humbling. A very humbling experience. | :12:39. | :12:43.
It is rather rare for geologists to get this sort of recognition. | :12:44. | :12:46.
It's the Woodsmith Mine, in perpetuity. | :12:47. | :12:53.
1,000 workers will eventually be here. | :12:54. | :12:56.
It's more of a sort of symbolic mine, I guess, in terms | :12:57. | :12:59.
-- it's more of a sort of symbolic moment. | :13:00. | :13:12.
But it's a good one to recognise the contribution of a couple of key | :13:13. | :13:15.
individuals to name the mine and change it from being | :13:16. | :13:17.
Because it's bad luck to change mine's name once you've given it. | :13:18. | :13:23.
So therefore, hopefully, that name will be there forever. | :13:24. | :13:25.
And as the Woodsmith Mine, the government's claiming | :13:26. | :13:27.
it's the biggest project in the Northern Powerhouse. | :13:28. | :13:29.
And one of 13 being marketed to overseas potential investors. | :13:30. | :13:31.
If you look at what's happening in terms of foreign direct | :13:32. | :13:34.
investment in the north, it's growing at twice | :13:35. | :13:36.
So the efforts of the government and businesses themselves is having | :13:37. | :13:39.
a real impact in times of closing the gap between investment | :13:40. | :13:42.
The mine company has already raised ?1 billion, | :13:43. | :13:45.
though, and more will come, overseas investment or not, | :13:46. | :13:48.
with an eye to starting production in 2021. | :13:49. | :13:53.
Plenty more to come in Friday's Look North. | :13:54. | :13:56.
Mark Tulip will have all the weekend sport, | :13:57. | :13:58.
plus we take a look around the Lake District island that's just | :13:59. | :14:01.
And we go into the weekend with a yellow warning for heavy rain. I'll | :14:02. | :14:13.
have all the details later in the programme. | :14:14. | :14:16.
Now, do you bring in your dustbin as soon as it's been emptied | :14:17. | :14:19.
Well, in the North Yorkshire village of Osmotherly, offensive, | :14:20. | :14:30.
anonymous letters have been sent to some residents accusing | :14:31. | :14:34.
them of being "lazy" and leaving their bins on public view. | :14:35. | :14:37.
Phil Connell has been to investigate. | :14:38. | :14:40.
It's a sleepy North Yorkshire village where outbursts | :14:41. | :14:42.
Recently, though, the issue of household bins in Osmotherley has | :14:43. | :14:48.
triggered strong words and a series of mystery letters. | :14:49. | :14:51.
The anonymous letters are being sent to residents in the village | :14:52. | :14:56.
who are leaving their bins in areas like this. | :14:57. | :15:00.
Eight letters have so far been sent, with a Teesside postmark the only | :15:01. | :15:04.
clue as to who and where they've come from. | :15:05. | :15:07.
It's a quiet village, there's not a lot else going on. | :15:08. | :15:09.
For someone to have that bubbling resentment around something | :15:10. | :15:12.
as innocuous as wheelie bins, really, is quite surprising! | :15:13. | :15:15.
A lot of people think it's absolutely ridiculous. | :15:16. | :15:19.
Who has the time to even go out of their way to do this? | :15:20. | :15:22.
In the letters, the anonymous sender makes their feelings felt, writing, | :15:23. | :15:25.
"You obviously feel it's fine to leave your filthy, | :15:26. | :15:28.
Perhaps it is your upbringing, or laziness, or simply | :15:29. | :15:34.
Michael Rowe has received not just one, but two | :15:35. | :15:41.
This second letter is offensive, yes it is. | :15:42. | :15:46.
And the concern is that there's a third and a fourth, | :15:47. | :15:51.
and they get more offensive and they get more threatening. | :15:52. | :15:53.
Not at all. No idea at all, no. | :15:54. | :15:58.
The village is now watching and waiting to see what happens next. | :15:59. | :16:01.
And with bin day not till next Friday, it may be an anxious week. | :16:02. | :16:09.
The National Trust tries to ensure Britain's most beautiful scenery | :16:10. | :16:12.
and architecture is preserved and can be enjoyed by everyone. | :16:13. | :16:15.
One of its founding fathers was inspired to set it up | :16:16. | :16:18.
when he saw an island in the Lake District offered up | :16:19. | :16:21.
He was outraged that it would become private property, | :16:22. | :16:28.
rather than a space to be used by everyone. | :16:29. | :16:31.
Now the Trust has finally taken possession of Grasmere Island, | :16:32. | :16:33.
Grasmere Island lies at the heart of the Lake District. | :16:34. | :16:44.
Wordsworth is said to have picnicked here frequently. | :16:45. | :16:51.
But back in 1893, the island was put up for sale. | :16:52. | :16:53.
And the thought of this idyllic spot becoming private property | :16:54. | :16:56.
outraged local clergyman, Hardwicke Rawnsley. | :16:57. | :16:59.
Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley had a deep passion that everybody needed access | :17:00. | :17:03.
The journey to Grasmere Island is an idyllic experience in itself. | :17:04. | :17:14.
Back in 1893, the new owner decided to make a few additions, | :17:15. | :17:17.
which didn't go down too well with the locals. | :17:18. | :17:22.
A flagpole was erected and shrubbery planted, which caused a lot | :17:23. | :17:25.
A respectful letter was written asking him to reconsider | :17:26. | :17:30.
"If you and your friends felt so strongly about what happened | :17:31. | :17:38.
to the island, you were perfectly competent to turn up to the sale, | :17:39. | :17:42.
I suppose, really, that is exactly the issue that Rawnsley | :17:43. | :17:46.
That bits of the Lake District were being sold off to the highest | :17:47. | :17:52.
bidder, and they could do whatever they chose with them. | :17:53. | :17:54.
He was passionate that ordinary people had access | :17:55. | :17:57.
The loss of this island for public use proved the catalyst that | :17:58. | :18:09.
inspired Rawnsley to become a founding father of | :18:10. | :18:11.
But it's only now that the Trust has been able to take control of it. | :18:12. | :18:15.
The last owner bequeathed it to them. | :18:16. | :18:17.
Canon Rawnsley spent his final years at Allen Bank, | :18:18. | :18:19.
From here he could view the island that inspired him to help | :18:20. | :18:23.
And now, at last, that island is part of the Trust's portfolio, | :18:24. | :18:30.
to be preserved and enjoyed by everyone, forever. | :18:31. | :18:40.
Very nice indeed. It made you want to go out and spend the weekend | :18:41. | :18:45.
that! Especially with good weather like that. | :18:46. | :18:49.
After a break for the FA Cup, the Premier League returns | :18:50. | :18:52.
Sunderland's band of Everton old boys may feel they have a point | :18:53. | :18:56.
to prove at Goodison Park - a game they do really | :18:57. | :18:59.
And what about Boro - can they emulate the Black Cats' | :19:00. | :19:02.
victory at Big Sam's fellow strugglers Crystal, Palace? | :19:03. | :19:05.
They may be teetering on the edge of Premier League survival, | :19:06. | :19:08.
but they were certainly cheerful enough in training this week. | :19:09. | :19:10.
Middlesbrough have managed plenty of draws, but haven't picked up | :19:11. | :19:12.
three points so far in this calendar year - although that doesn't seem | :19:13. | :19:16.
The people who come to watch our training sessions | :19:17. | :19:24.
and to do interviews, or to do something, everybody says | :19:25. | :19:31.
that they don't realise they were watching a session | :19:32. | :19:37.
of a team which is in relegation position. | :19:38. | :19:39.
So the players know how good they are doing everything. | :19:40. | :19:41.
A high-scoring game seems unlikely on Saturday. | :19:42. | :19:43.
Boro's problems have been largely in front of goal, | :19:44. | :19:45.
with just two scored in the league in 2017. | :19:46. | :19:47.
Crystal Palace haven't faired much betterr. | :19:48. | :19:50.
With just three points seperating the two teams, | :19:51. | :19:53.
Aitor Karanka says his team don't need reminding of the | :19:54. | :19:56.
I can't and I don't want to put pressure on my players, | :19:57. | :20:01.
because we don't have that experience. | :20:02. | :20:05.
I can't be here telling them how important and massive this game | :20:06. | :20:08.
So my job is to transmit all my confidence. | :20:09. | :20:15.
Over on Wearside, it's been a difficult week, | :20:16. | :20:17.
with the announcement of upcoming redundancies at Sunderland | :20:18. | :20:19.
regardless of whether or not they stay up. | :20:20. | :20:25.
It's certainly affected me and all the players in the club. | :20:26. | :20:28.
We feel really sorry and sad for the people | :20:29. | :20:30.
On Saturday, Moyes returns for just the second time to his former club, | :20:31. | :20:40.
But in past great escapes Sunderland have beaten better | :20:41. | :20:45.
teams away from home, including Everton two seasons ago. | :20:46. | :20:51.
Towards the back end of the season there seems to be | :20:52. | :20:54.
Experience of players having played enough in the Premier League. | :20:55. | :21:00.
Also, players haven't been in this situation before. | :21:01. | :21:01.
I think the one thing we all know is we've been worse situation | :21:02. | :21:05.
and some managed to claw our way out of it. | :21:06. | :21:08.
As Sunderland continue their battle to stay up, they'll be joined again | :21:09. | :21:11.
by the embodiment of fighting spirit - cancer patient Bradley Lowery, | :21:12. | :21:14.
And when England play Lithuania at Wembley in March, | :21:15. | :21:19.
In the Championship, Newcastle United could | :21:20. | :21:33.
strengthen their hold on pole position tomorrow. | :21:34. | :21:34.
They're at home to struggling Bristol City, while second-placed | :21:35. | :21:36.
Brighton take on fourth-placed Reading. | :21:37. | :21:38.
The Magpies haven't always been at their best this season. | :21:39. | :21:40.
But the fact is they're unbeaten in seven games and, | :21:41. | :21:43.
as every supporter knows, what matters most is promotion back | :21:44. | :21:45.
And, you know, we know they understand that also. | :21:46. | :21:50.
Hopefully at the end of the year, if and when we get promoted, | :21:51. | :21:53.
everybody will be happy, whether we played | :21:54. | :21:55.
We feel pressure from the beginning, from | :21:56. | :21:59.
We lost two games, and everybody was like, "Ooh, it | :22:00. | :22:11.
Now we are much better, and we have two enjoyed | :22:12. | :22:15.
it and try to be sure, as I said before, that we are | :22:16. | :22:18.
Well, Newcastle aren't our only promotion chasers | :22:19. | :22:20.
After a recent dip in form, third placed Carlisle | :22:21. | :22:24.
are back to winning ways and chasing a third successive | :22:25. | :22:26.
Rivals Portsmouth are the visitors to Brunton Park on a day | :22:27. | :22:30.
which could prove pivotal on the pitch and emotional off it. | :22:31. | :22:32.
When Carlisle slumped to a heavy home defeat by Blackpool, | :22:33. | :22:37.
it looked as though the wheels might be coming off their promotion push. | :22:38. | :22:41.
But after a perhaps timely wake-up call, they beat the leaders | :22:42. | :22:43.
Doncaster in the very next game and then won at play-off hopefuls | :22:44. | :22:46.
Manager Keith Curle was sent to the stands near the end of that | :22:47. | :22:50.
game, but he was more relaxed this lunchtime, although he did issue | :22:51. | :22:53.
this rallying call to stay-away fans ahead of tomorrow's big game. | :22:54. | :22:56.
I want the whole of Carlisle bouncing. | :22:57. | :22:57.
We're trying to create a rhythm to what we're doing, | :22:58. | :23:00.
Yeah, it's frustrating when you get 18,000 against Everton, | :23:01. | :23:12.
and then now we're playing top against the of the league last | :23:13. | :23:15.
Now we're playing against a team that are potentially | :23:16. | :23:18.
That shows people are buying into what I'm trying to do | :23:19. | :23:24.
and what we're trying to do as a football club. | :23:25. | :23:26.
But tomorrow's game also sees former Blues and Workington midfielder | :23:27. | :23:32.
Tony Hopper make an emotional appearance as a special guest, | :23:33. | :23:34.
following his diagnosis with motor neurone disease. | :23:35. | :23:37.
Tony's three young sons will be mascots, and United plan to donate | :23:38. | :23:40.
50p from the sale of every match programme to the Hoppers' | :23:41. | :23:42.
Fightback Fund for the MND Association, as well as the club's | :23:43. | :23:45.
The people that I've spoke to that know Tony personally, | :23:46. | :23:50.
Gave it everything that he had fully football club. | :23:51. | :24:00.
I think it's a great opportunity for the football club to recognise | :24:01. | :24:02.
Also up against promotion hopefuls for the second weekend in a row - | :24:03. | :24:07.
They're at Colchester, now just three points | :24:08. | :24:10.
Finally, away from the men's and women's six Nations Championship | :24:11. | :24:22.
there's a big weekend of club rugby - in both union and league. | :24:23. | :24:25.
Newcastle Falcons' away trip at Exeter tomorrow | :24:26. | :24:27.
At Kingston Park tomorrow, Newcastle Thunder are hosting | :24:28. | :24:30.
Workington Town is the stand-out tie in rugby league's Challenge Cup | :24:31. | :24:33.
with another regional derby, York versus Egremont, | :24:34. | :24:34.
Time for the weather now. I'm glad I did the garden last weekend, because | :24:35. | :24:50.
this weekend doesn't sound too much! It's not going to be great. We have | :24:51. | :24:54.
had a decent day of whether compared to yesterday. I have a few Weather | :24:55. | :24:58.
Watcher pictures to show you first of all. This picture, a very calm | :24:59. | :25:04.
bay earlier this afternoon. Come up a little higher and we have snow | :25:05. | :25:08.
over the hills. The highest of our pictures tonight, a snow-covered | :25:09. | :25:18.
summit looking very chilly indeed. This way can we are going to see | :25:19. | :25:23.
some heavy rain at times, cheaply across Cumbria and western parts of | :25:24. | :25:27.
Northumbria and County Durham. -- chiefly across. But it is going to | :25:28. | :25:32.
be a mild weekend. Let's take a look at why that's happening. A ridge of | :25:33. | :25:35.
high pressure calmed things today, but this area of low pressure pushed | :25:36. | :25:40.
on with ice bars packed tightly together, indicating a strong | :25:41. | :25:43.
south-westerly wind. -- with isobars packed tightly together. A little | :25:44. | :25:48.
respite, then another weather front will push in. This evening and | :25:49. | :25:53.
overnight, outbreaks of rain pushing into Cumbria, eventually getting | :25:54. | :25:56.
across to the north-east. It will be heaviest across the Cumbrian fells. | :25:57. | :26:01.
Further east we may seem rain on and off through the East. Temperatures | :26:02. | :26:04.
dropping down to around five Celsius. Through tomorrow, the rain | :26:05. | :26:08.
is likely to be heavy and persistent. The Met office has a | :26:09. | :26:15.
yellow warning in force chiefly for Cumbria and western parts of | :26:16. | :26:17.
Northumbria and County Durham, because that rain will be heavy and | :26:18. | :26:21.
persistent, coming down through much of the day. Western fells and up | :26:22. | :26:25.
slopes will be most likely to get the highest totals - 60-70 | :26:26. | :26:31.
millimetres. Further east, we mostly rain on and off. Through the | :26:32. | :26:36.
afternoon across Cumbria it will be wet and windy with temperatures | :26:37. | :26:40.
around 9-10 Celsius. For some northern parts of Northumberland, we | :26:41. | :26:44.
might see sunshine through the afternoon. Generally for the | :26:45. | :26:48.
north-east, one of those days with lots of cloud. Rain on and off. | :26:49. | :26:53.
Through Saturday night and into Sunday, the rain hangs around for a | :26:54. | :26:56.
time but eventually it will move away so we end up with a dry night | :26:57. | :27:00.
to take us into Sunday morning. Temperatures again dropping down to | :27:01. | :27:06.
around five Celsius. Sunday starts promising. Try and bright with | :27:07. | :27:09.
sunshine. But the wind still picking in the south-west. Sunday starts off | :27:10. | :27:15.
dry, turns a bit west later on in the day. Again, some of that name | :27:16. | :27:20.
will be heavy and persistent across Cumbria. Temperatures around 10-11 | :27:21. | :27:26.
Celsius. Into the start of next week, we will see some styles of | :27:27. | :27:29.
sunshine on Monday. Chan was, colder. | :27:30. | :27:33.
Thank you very much. The good news is it's Friday and the weekend | :27:34. | :27:39.
started. The bad news is it's the end of half term and all because | :27:40. | :27:45.
we're back on the road! Have a good weekend. Bye-bye. -- and | :27:46. | :27:47. |
