:04:23.:04:24.

in County Durham following the announcement that the Walkers

:04:25.:04:27.

crisp factory in Peterlee has been The plant's likely to shut before

:04:28.:04:30.

the end of the year. Our business correspondent

:04:31.:04:34.

Ian Reeve is live for us Well, the workers learnt of the

:04:35.:04:46.

likely closure of their plant had a meeting this morning. The lines were

:04:47.:04:51.

stopped and all staff sent home to contemplate the probable closure of

:04:52.:04:53.

a factory that has been here since 1960.

:04:54.:04:56.

It is one of the most popular of our brands,

:04:57.:05:03.

helped in part by adverts starring former footballer, Gary Lineker.

:05:04.:05:06.

But today, the maker of Walkers crisps had some unpopular news.

:05:07.:05:09.

The Peterlee factory is slated for closure.

:05:10.:05:12.

We can make crisps now in three factories rather than four.

:05:13.:05:23.

So that takes us to look at, around the UK, which factory do

:05:24.:05:26.

And when you look at where we deliver our products,

:05:27.:05:30.

then 80% of everything we make out of Peterlee is shipped south.

:05:31.:05:32.

After five and a half years here, her future is just as unclear

:05:33.:05:37.

Nobody wants to hear this news, but they took it really well.

:05:38.:05:45.

I think they understand it, but it is still very shocking.

:05:46.:05:50.

So, the way people took the news, I could not have asked for better.

:05:51.:05:54.

And I am not surprised because they are a fabulous group of people.

:05:55.:05:57.

The town council's worry, though, is that an employment staging post

:05:58.:05:59.

It is a stepping stone for a lot of people in education,

:06:00.:06:04.

from college and school who are leaving, school leavers.

:06:05.:06:07.

It is a step in the door into employment.

:06:08.:06:09.

If this goes, it is going to be high unemployment.

:06:10.:06:18.

The Peterlee factory has been here since 1960 and once made

:06:19.:06:21.

Can I take a few bags of Tudor out my wages?

:06:22.:06:26.

Nothing but the best for you, right, lad?

:06:27.:06:28.

And now the factory could be by the end of the year.

:06:29.:06:38.

Well, a 45 day consultation period now kicks in and the company has

:06:39.:06:43.

promised to consult all 380 employees. Sadly, after 57 years, it

:06:44.:06:48.

seems like this factory has had its day.

:06:49.:06:53.

Meanwhile, nearly 60 job losses have been announced at a Teesside

:06:54.:06:56.

engineering group which is being put into administration,

:06:57.:06:58.

with uncertainty facing a further 170 employees.

:06:59.:07:02.

50 redundancies had already been announced

:07:03.:07:04.

at the Stockton-based Cordell Group, which has been in business

:07:05.:07:06.

The company says it's suffered from a decline in the oil and gas

:07:07.:07:10.

sector over recent years, and made a loss on two contracts

:07:11.:07:13.

It says interest has been shown by potential buyers or investors.

:07:14.:07:28.

They've been jailed for four months and banned from keeping animals

:07:29.:07:31.

for life for what a magistrate described as "a barbaric act

:07:32.:07:34.

59-year-old Michael Heathcock and Richard Finch, who's 60,

:07:35.:07:38.

buried a dog alive after hammering a nail through its head.

:07:39.:07:44.

The men said they killed the animal because it was ill and they couldn't

:07:45.:07:48.

You may find some of the images in Stuart Whincup's report upsetting.

:07:49.:07:53.

They've received threats, had their properties damaged

:07:54.:07:55.

They arrived two hours before their sentencing was due

:07:56.:08:02.

to avoid confrontations and before the crowd of protestors gathered.

:08:03.:08:06.

I just can't believe it, and I've had nightmares

:08:07.:08:08.

You have got to actually hold that dog and drive that nail through,

:08:09.:08:15.

And to an animal that you love and you have had as part

:08:16.:08:20.

I just don't know what sort of mentality these people have

:08:21.:08:24.

There's something seriously wrong with these two.

:08:25.:08:27.

That little dog must have suffered hell.

:08:28.:08:30.

Michael Heathcock - here on the left -

:08:31.:08:32.

said his dog was ill and he couldn't afford to have him

:08:33.:08:35.

So he and Richard Finch hammered a nail through his head and buried

:08:36.:08:40.

The vet who tried to save the terrier described it

:08:41.:08:45.

as the worst case of animal cruelty he'd ever seen.

:08:46.:08:48.

It is very emotive about a horrific act that has happened to an animal

:08:49.:08:52.

and then subsequently has not died as a result of its injuries

:08:53.:08:56.

The dog was found in the woods by two walkers who heard grunting

:08:57.:09:04.

and snoring and were distressed by what they discovered.

:09:05.:09:09.

As both men were jailed for four months, there were cheers and shouts

:09:10.:09:16.

of "justice" inside the court room and outside as a big crowd gathered.

:09:17.:09:19.

No, it was harrowing to sit through that.

:09:20.:09:22.

It really was. At least it is some form of justice.

:09:23.:09:25.

The chairman of the bench, Frances Linsley, said,

:09:26.:09:32.

this was a barbaric act which had caused untold suffering

:09:33.:09:35.

A charity which looks after victims of domestic violence

:09:36.:09:43.

in Sunderland says women will die because of council budget cuts

:09:44.:09:46.

Sunderland councillors have voted through over

:09:47.:09:55.

While council tax is going up by nearly 5%,

:09:56.:10:02.

groups representing vulnerable women and the homeless will lose

:10:03.:10:04.

The council says tight budgets have left it with very difficult choices.

:10:05.:10:11.

Here's our news correspondent, Mark Denten.

:10:12.:10:13.

A reception committee today for Sunderland's councillors.

:10:14.:10:18.

Wearside Women's Aid campaigners here because in one foul swoop,

:10:19.:10:24.

their current ?586,000 grant was axed this afternoon -

:10:25.:10:26.

part of a total of ?3 million of grants to charities for women

:10:27.:10:33.

and homeless people which will be removed from this summer.

:10:34.:10:35.

I can't imagine anything worse than waking up one morning

:10:36.:10:37.

in the future and hearing on the radio that a woman's

:10:38.:10:40.

It was a one-off input of cash for three years and the contract

:10:41.:10:49.

It does surprise me that the partner organisations who work

:10:50.:10:54.

with the council to deliver those services, who were fully aware

:10:55.:10:59.

of this, are complaining as bitterly about that as they are,

:11:00.:11:02.

given that my officers have been talking to them since 2015

:11:03.:11:06.

about the transition to what we have to do.

:11:07.:11:08.

The council's adament today's decisions won't put people at risk

:11:09.:11:13.

because other organisations will step in.

:11:14.:11:15.

We just can't believe they have come to this decision.

:11:16.:11:19.

The impact that this is likely to have, at its worst,

:11:20.:11:24.

People are saying that they are exaggerating and we're like, no.

:11:25.:11:28.

Two women a week are murdered in the UK.

:11:29.:11:33.

Currently, we have 500-plus women in our outreach of us have been

:11:34.:11:36.

designated as extremely high risk of murder or serious injury.

:11:37.:11:38.

It should move to dealing more with the perpetrators.

:11:39.:11:43.

If we don't deal with the cohort of men, primarily,

:11:44.:11:47.

because it is mostly men on women, domestic violence, if we don't

:11:48.:11:49.

deal with them better and cut their numbers,

:11:50.:11:51.

domestic violence will never go away.

:11:52.:11:55.

Sunderland Council's current grants for Wearside women

:11:56.:11:57.

Obviously, those protests captured attention today,

:11:58.:12:04.

but Wearside is facing wider cuts, isn't it?

:12:05.:12:08.

It is indeed. ?45 million of cuts overall. Also, council tax going not

:12:09.:12:19.

by 4.99%. Just under the threshold where it would have to be a local

:12:20.:12:23.

referendum. Cuts across-the-board, really. A cut in the library budget,

:12:24.:12:33.

a charitable trust to run Sunderland was not passed by 2019. Cuts in taxi

:12:34.:12:36.

marshalling and social behaviour support. At the same time, you don't

:12:37.:12:42.

have to look far to see big investment. The new we're crossing

:12:43.:12:47.

in the skyline as you head to Sunderland. Plans for a big

:12:48.:12:51.

manufacturing park as well. All important, says the council, in

:12:52.:12:55.

boosting local economy. Budget rules mean the council can just take money

:12:56.:13:00.

from those projects embedded into day-to-day expenditure, supporting

:13:01.:13:04.

some of the charities we have about. Council rules ban that from

:13:05.:13:09.

happening. The dilemma for the Council is something I1 its

:13:10.:13:13.

consultations. People tend to view all services as very important, with

:13:14.:13:16.

very few saying they were not important. In other words, we're at

:13:17.:13:20.

the stage where whatever the council does, it will get notices. -- it

:13:21.:13:25.

will get criticism. As of today, drivers caught

:13:26.:13:27.

using their mobile phone or any handheld device while behind

:13:28.:13:30.

the wheel will face a ?200 fine and six penalty

:13:31.:13:32.

points on their licence. During a one week

:13:33.:13:40.

campaign in January, Durham Police caught 72 drivers

:13:41.:13:42.

using their phone while driving. Meanwhile, during 2016, around 600

:13:43.:13:45.

people were caught in Cumbria, North-east lawyer Michael Robinson

:13:46.:13:48.

described what the increased One of the things is that if you are

:13:49.:13:58.

new driver, so you have been driving for less than two years, you'll find

:13:59.:14:02.

that automatically your license will be revoked and you will have to go

:14:03.:14:07.

through the driving process again. Also, if you happen to be the

:14:08.:14:10.

responsible driver with a learner driver and that learner driver is

:14:11.:14:15.

using a mobile phone, Q is the responsible driver can also get the

:14:16.:14:18.

finance points. If it is in your hand, that is you committing the

:14:19.:14:19.

offence. Cumbria's newest MP officially

:14:20.:14:20.

began her job today. Conservative Trudy

:14:21.:14:30.

Harrison was sworn in after Prime Minister's Questions

:14:31.:14:34.

finished in the House of Commons. She won her seat last week from

:14:35.:14:36.

Labour in the Copeland by-election. She's the first Conservative

:14:37.:14:39.

to represent the area She succeeds Jamie Reed,

:14:40.:14:41.

who resigned earlier this year. You're watching

:14:42.:14:47.

Wednesday's Look North. Dawn Thewlis has tonight's

:14:48.:14:48.

sports news shortly. Why this West Cumbrian

man has set himself And plenty of dry weather coming up

in an exudate but it'll be breezy and cold as well. I will have little

:15:00.:15:06.

forecast later in the programme. -- coming up in the next few days.

:15:07.:15:13.

Now, what do you do if you're left with a mountain of cuddly toys

:15:14.:15:17.

once your children get too old for them?

:15:18.:15:19.

Well, an 11-year-old schoolgirl from Harrogate in North Yorkshire

:15:20.:15:25.

has come up with the perfect solution to the problem.

:15:26.:15:28.

Anna Crossley has been to meet Scarlett

:15:29.:15:31.

What started off as a teddy stall at a local church soon became

:15:32.:15:37.

And within a few days, this house in Harrowgate

:15:38.:15:44.

It was just an idea that popped into my head.

:15:45.:15:52.

Like, because I wanted to have my own business for a while,

:15:53.:15:54.

so my dad built me a website and then it built up from there.

:15:55.:16:01.

Initially, Scarlett just wanted to get rid of her old teddies

:16:02.:16:04.

But she was soon inundated with everyone else's cuddly toys.

:16:05.:16:12.

So, she decided to set up an adoption website,

:16:13.:16:15.

where unwanted bears and bunnies could be re-homed for a small

:16:16.:16:18.

She has really embraced the challenge and really enjoyed it.

:16:19.:16:22.

And she has learned a lot along the way.

:16:23.:16:24.

It has been a busy half term for her, and in the process,

:16:25.:16:28.

raised some money for an incredibly worthy cause.

:16:29.:16:30.

We have had bags and bags of donations.

:16:31.:16:36.

Once the stuffed animals arrive, they are washed and preened,

:16:37.:16:38.

ready to be photographed and put up for adoption.

:16:39.:16:40.

The only problem is that there are so many of them.

:16:41.:16:43.

What has been the most difficult thing about all these teddies?

:16:44.:16:46.

And especially having to photo them all.

:16:47.:17:00.

Well, you didn't think I would leave without one, did you?

:17:01.:17:02.

What a great young girl. That is amazing, isn't it?

:17:03.:17:23.

Now, in the past he's run from Land's End to John O'Groats.

:17:24.:17:25.

And he's also run all the way to the capital from his west

:17:26.:17:29.

Cumbrian home to take part in the London marathon.

:17:30.:17:31.

But now Cleator Moor man Gary McKee is going further,

:17:32.:17:33.

much further in his efforts to raise money for charity.

:17:34.:17:36.

He's been telling Mark Mcalindon about his latest little jog.

:17:37.:17:38.

I am running 100 marathons in 100 days for MacMillan Cancer Support.

:17:39.:17:41.

My dad was diagnosed with cancer in 1997,

:17:42.:17:43.

And he would have been 80 years old this year,

:17:44.:17:46.

In 100 days, Gary McKee will run more than 2620 miles.

:17:47.:18:04.

It is like running to North Africa and back from his home,

:18:05.:18:07.

When I am running, if I haven't got anybody with me,

:18:08.:18:14.

I think about what I am doing, who I am doing it for.

:18:15.:18:18.

The people who've been affected by cancer.

:18:19.:18:20.

Although I was touched by my dad's story, it extended into everybody.

:18:21.:18:23.

In his years of fundraising, Gary has raised more than ?150,000.

:18:24.:18:32.

Priceless support for many, been families.

:18:33.:18:38.

We give grants to people who are in financial difficulties

:18:39.:18:44.

So if you think back, with the money we use for grants,

:18:45.:18:53.

how many local people has Gary helped over the years?

:18:54.:18:55.

It is just phenomenal. He is number one, for me.

:18:56.:18:58.

Gary's final run will be the London Marathon in April.

:18:59.:19:01.

My joints, in the morning, a little bit stiff when I get out of bed.

:19:02.:19:09.

But after five minutes, I am fine and ready to go again.

:19:10.:19:16.

Despite the gruelling nature of this challenge,

:19:17.:19:18.

Gary has not ruled out further adventures in the future.

:19:19.:19:26.

His joints are little bit stiff in the morning? I would be like the tin

:19:27.:19:31.

man! I could not manage one marathon in 100 days.

:19:32.:19:36.

It is very impressive. Something else impressive as well last

:19:37.:19:37.

night... Newcastle United are back at the top

:19:38.:19:38.

of the Championship after beating They came from behind to snatch

:19:50.:19:54.

what Chris Hughton did seven years ago and take Newcastle back

Jennifer. How are we looking? Not too bad in an exudate. Sunny spells

:23:36.:23:40.

by rain in the forecast as well. I have some pictures from the Weather

:23:41.:23:44.

Watchers to show you. This was from Cumbria last night. Venus reflected

:23:45.:23:49.

in the Solway Firth. Another from Cumbria this morning. It was a

:23:50.:23:51.

lovely sunrise, pink and yellow skies. Moving to North Shields,

:23:52.:23:58.

there were a few showers this afternoon. A rainbow just popping

:23:59.:24:04.

through. In the next few days, we will see dry weather at times. Some

:24:05.:24:11.

rain as well in the forecast. Quite breezy in an exudate and overnight

:24:12.:24:16.

frosts and fog as well. Here is the map tonight. There will be some

:24:17.:24:19.

showers for a time. Heavy rain pushing into some parts of Cumbria

:24:20.:24:24.

and North Yorkshire. Some snow over the tops of the Pennines for a time.

:24:25.:24:27.

That will gradually sink southwards through the night and most parts

:24:28.:24:30.

will have a dry night with clear spells. Temperatures dropping to

:24:31.:24:34.

around freezing or just above. A cold start to your Friday morning.

:24:35.:24:38.

We should seize a decent spells of sunshine, especially the further

:24:39.:24:42.

east than you are. Some showers speckled around here and there but

:24:43.:24:45.

nothing too heavy or significant. Let's take a look at things closely

:24:46.:24:49.

at 3pm tomorrow afternoon. The western part of Cumbria 's quake

:24:50.:24:52.

lady by this point but there will be some breaks in the clay to let

:24:53.:24:55.

sunshine through. A few showers across parts of Northumberland, not

:24:56.:24:59.

too heavy, and the lion's share the sunshine will be in the north-east

:25:00.:25:04.

as yet through the afternoon. Still feeling quite cold with temperatures

:25:05.:25:06.

of seven or eight Celsius and a brisk westerly breeze. As we go

:25:07.:25:12.

through the night first into Friday, there will be rain into Cumbria for

:25:13.:25:15.

a time but generally another dry night with clear spells once again.

:25:16.:25:20.

Temperatures falling down to around three Celsius. We will see a touch

:25:21.:25:24.

of frost in places. Friday looks like this. Outbreaks of showery rain

:25:25.:25:29.

across Northumberland in the morning, otherwise, a dry start the

:25:30.:25:33.

day with sunny spells. We're keeping an eye on this area of rain pushing

:25:34.:25:36.

in from the south. Some uncertainty at this point as to how far north of

:25:37.:25:42.

rain will get the deluxe light by the afternoon, some parts of Cumbria

:25:43.:25:47.

and the north-east will see that we move through. Temperatures on Friday

:25:48.:25:52.

getting up to seven nine Celsius. This area of low pressure the rain

:25:53.:25:56.

through hangs around for Saturday. It looks like on Saturday we will

:25:57.:26:02.

see a breaks of rain. A gradually pushes away as we get into Sunday.

:26:03.:26:06.

Saturday will be wet for many others. Outbreaks of rain that heavy

:26:07.:26:13.

at times. Sunday, many parts try. Let's review that Cumbria. Decent

:26:14.:26:16.

day tomorrow with sunny spells. Rain overnight taking us into Friday.

:26:17.:26:20.

Friday is much cloudier before the weekend gets a little bit wetter.

:26:21.:26:24.

Very similar picture for the north-east. These and spells of

:26:25.:26:27.

sunshine tomorrow, clouding over as the head into Friday.

Hole-mac, dear. Thank you very much for that.

:26:31.:26:36.

That is all from us for now. We will be back at 10:30pm with

Sharon. For now, goodbye. I think my political beliefs are

:26:40.:27:06.

really quite straightforward. I believe that our country needs to

:27:07.:27:10.

work for everyone. Not just for the rich,

:27:11.:27:12.

not just for the privileged, not just for those who know

:27:13.:27:15.

the right people or who've got the loudest voices, but a country

:27:16.:27:18.

that really works for everyone, has the opportunity to be

:27:19.:27:23.

who they want to be.
