and on BBC One, we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:00.:00:00.

Hello and welcome to Monday's Look North.

:00:00.:00:00.

In the headlines tonight: 'An horrific ordeal' -

:00:07.:00:08.

Police confirm a mother snatched from Redcar seafront with her

:00:09.:00:11.

The victim was screaming for help as she was forced into the car, someone

:00:12.:00:26.

Durham Police say they'll give drugs to addicts to try to reduce crime.

:00:27.:00:32.

All I need is the air that I breathe.

:00:33.:00:34.

A radical plan to cut air pollution could take cars off the street.

:00:35.:00:37.

Could a Scottish tax cut spell trouble for North East airports?

:00:38.:00:45.

In this week's "Team Talk" we'll see which way the wind's blowing

:00:46.:00:48.

And we'll check out the "Teesside Tornado" -

:00:49.:00:51.

storming through to strike gold at the European Indoor

:00:52.:00:53.

A woman and her child abducted from the seafront at Redcar in broad

:00:54.:01:13.

The woman, who's in her 30s, was driven to a secluded lane

:01:14.:01:17.

in a nearby village before both men raped her.

:01:18.:01:19.

She and the toddler were then left at the side of the road nearby

:01:20.:01:23.

Our reporter Phil Connell is in Redcar tonight

:01:24.:01:28.

It is now three days since this horrific attack in Redcar. Our crime

:01:29.:01:44.

which really has shaken this local community. It is an abduction which

:01:45.:01:48.

happened hero in the seafront just behind me in broad daylight. What

:01:49.:01:54.

made it worse was the -- the women's young child was snatched as well.

:01:55.:01:59.

Both tonight were said to be receiving specialist support.

:02:00.:02:03.

It was say Cleveland Police aphoristic ordeal.

:02:04.:02:04.

In broad daylight on the seafront in Redcar, a woman and her young child

:02:05.:02:08.

were abducted by the two men lunchtime on Friday.

:02:09.:02:10.

They were bundled into the back of a dark blue saloon car

:02:11.:02:13.

and driven to the nearby village of Yearby where

:02:14.:02:19.

and driven to the nearby village of Yearby where the woman

:02:20.:02:22.

The ordeal is said to have five hours.

:02:23.:02:25.

At a press conference, the police confirmed they were

:02:26.:02:28.

looking forward two dangerous rapists.

:02:29.:02:29.

The victim was screaming for help as she was forced into the car.

:02:30.:02:32.

Someone must have seen and heard her.

:02:33.:02:34.

Both men did rape this woman which makes it even more

:02:35.:02:37.

horrific which is why both these men need to be identified and caught.

:02:38.:02:43.

This woman supports victims of rape in the

:02:44.:02:46.

Redcar area and says the victim and her child will now receive

:02:47.:02:49.

It was in broad daylight, they have obviously kept

:02:50.:02:59.

her for a number of hours and did whatever...the unthinkable

:03:00.:03:02.

That is unthinkable, the child was there and

:03:03.:03:05.

Police have released descriptions of the two men.

:03:06.:03:13.

The driver is described as white, in his late 20s or 30s,

:03:14.:03:15.

with the word "love" tattooed across his knuckles.

:03:16.:03:17.

The second man is also white, medium build with a local

:03:18.:03:20.

In a place like Redcar, how unusual is it for something like this

:03:21.:03:30.

This is extremely unusual for anywhere, not just Redcar.

:03:31.:03:36.

This is a very serious case but it is

:03:37.:03:38.

Police say additional officers are now patrolling the area

:03:39.:03:44.

and warn members of the public to be extra vigilant.

:03:45.:03:55.

Despite growing concerns hear tonight, police are trying to

:03:56.:04:02.

reassure local people. They say that is the possibility the victim may

:04:03.:04:07.

have known her attackers. They say incidents of this nature are

:04:08.:04:13.

relatively rare and believe this to be an isolated case. Thank you.

:04:14.:04:15.

Durham Police say it's the only option left

:04:16.:04:20.

to cut drugs crime - give some addicts

:04:21.:04:22.

By the end of this year the force says it could be giving a small

:04:23.:04:28.

number of the county's addicts free heroin.

:04:29.:04:30.

It says that will cut crime and save lives.

:04:31.:04:33.

But critics say the idea will just attract addicts from across the UK -

:04:34.:04:36.

drawn to the North East for a free fix.

:04:37.:04:38.

Here's our News Correspondent Mark Denten:

:04:39.:04:51.

Some politicians say there should be a war on drugs - but how to fight

:04:52.:04:55.

In County Durham both the Police And Crime Commissioner

:04:56.:04:58.

and Chief Constable have long argued against arresting your way out

:04:59.:05:01.

Three years ago the BBC's Inside Out programme took

:05:02.:05:04.

Durham's Chief Constable Mike Barton to Compenhagen where legal

:05:05.:05:06.

consumption rooms allow addicts to have free injections in a safe

:05:07.:05:09.

In Denmark the addicts bring their own

:05:10.:05:11.

drugs but in Durham the police would supply them.

:05:12.:05:22.

Individuals will go to a centre and there is they will inject

:05:23.:05:30.

diamorphine and they do that with clean needles and be supervised and

:05:31.:05:34.

there will be a wraparound package to support those individuals, using

:05:35.:05:39.

the recovery community we have across Durham constabulary.

:05:40.:05:41.

The scheme is called heroin assisted treatment or HAT.

:05:42.:05:43.

A heroin subsitute Diamorphine would be prescribed for addicts

:05:44.:05:45.

Although there are thought to be around 2,000 heroin

:05:46.:05:50.

The scheme would be targetted at a small number of them.

:05:51.:05:58.

We are trying to prevent crime and it is part of a treatment plan. It

:05:59.:06:05.

is not just providing them with Edwin, it is seeking to get off

:06:06.:06:10.

heroin to improve their health and also for the wider community, so

:06:11.:06:14.

they stop committing the crime which funds their habits.

:06:15.:06:18.

But critics say the plans could do more harm than good.

:06:19.:06:22.

You have an obvious consequence where it will draw in other people.

:06:23.:06:29.

The message says you can get free drugs. I think it is a

:06:30.:06:34.

legitimisation of the euthanasia of people with mental illness. I know

:06:35.:06:41.

those are strong terms but it is the marginalisation of the mentally ill.

:06:42.:06:42.

Durham Police hope to have the new scheme operating

:06:43.:06:45.

So the police want to introduce this scheme by the end of the year.

:06:46.:06:51.

What are the chances of that happening?

:06:52.:06:53.

In some ways died in police a good position to face down their critics.

:06:54.:07:01.

A report last week said they are the only police force in Britain with an

:07:02.:07:05.

outstanding rating. That is paying for it of course. Some of the police

:07:06.:07:10.

budget will go towards it but the police are talking to Darlington and

:07:11.:07:17.

Durham Council. They have public health budgets so that is used for

:07:18.:07:20.

things like obesity programmes and projects in public park and we want

:07:21.:07:28.

to get a bit of that programme. A cautious statement tonight from

:07:29.:07:32.

Durham council who confirmed they have been asked by the police to put

:07:33.:07:36.

forward an options paper and are on the early stages of that one. Any

:07:37.:07:42.

such project would have to be part of a number of evidence -based

:07:43.:07:43.

treatment packages. Thank you. A 19-year-old man has been arrested

:07:44.:07:46.

on suspicion of murder in York. The police were called after reports

:07:47.:07:53.

of a man with blood on his hands near the railway station

:07:54.:07:56.

in the early hours of today. They later found the body of a man

:07:57.:07:59.

in his 50s in a flat nearby. It's claimed that thousands

:08:00.:08:02.

of people are dying unnecessarily every year from air pollution

:08:03.:08:05.

in our traffic congested In York alone it's estimated that

:08:06.:08:07.

a hundred people die But are we doing enough

:08:08.:08:10.

to find long term solutions This exclusive report

:08:11.:08:14.

from Inside Out's Chris Jackson. Latest figures indicate that air

:08:15.:08:19.

pollution is contributing to thousands of early deaths

:08:20.:08:21.

across the North - particularly for people

:08:22.:08:23.

already in poor health. I'm conscious of the fact that I'm

:08:24.:08:30.

walking in between exhausts and things like that and you can

:08:31.:08:32.

feel it on your chest. constantly covering up my face being

:08:33.:08:36.

conscious of the air around me. That isn't necessarily as clean

:08:37.:08:42.

as what I'd like it to be When you're exposed to exhaust

:08:43.:08:44.

fumes, particularly the fine particulates,

:08:45.:08:50.

then there is an acute risk to you if you have a background

:08:51.:08:52.

of heart problems, lung problems, it significantly increases your risk

:08:53.:08:56.

of having something like a heart There's an extensive programme

:08:57.:08:59.

of pedestrianisation, park and ride schemes and a fleet

:09:00.:09:03.

of electric buses - but even here in York health

:09:04.:09:10.

officials estimate that to around a hundred early

:09:11.:09:12.

deaths every year . So York is trying harder than most

:09:13.:09:15.

to cut air pollution - is one of the most environmentally

:09:16.:09:20.

friendly Cities in Europe and it's introduced some strict policies

:09:21.:09:26.

to get cars off it's streets. If you want to own

:09:27.:09:36.

a house that's fine - but if you also want to own a car,

:09:37.:09:38.

you have to buy a parking space and that will cost,

:09:39.:09:42.

wait for it, 20,000 euros. Do you have any evidence that

:09:43.:09:44.

by taking some of the cars out the city that pollution,

:09:45.:09:48.

air quality is improved in the city? We have good results in the last ten

:09:49.:09:50.

years in Freiburg, we reduced Whilst such radical solutions might

:09:51.:10:00.

raise eyebrows back in York - with growing evidence of the link

:10:01.:10:06.

between air pollution and poor health - doing nothing to tackle

:10:07.:10:08.

the problem isn't an option. And there's more on that story

:10:09.:10:13.

in tonight's Inside Out, Newcastle Airport is warning it

:10:14.:10:20.

could lose nearly one million passengers a year if plans to cut

:10:21.:10:34.

air taxes in Scotland - Figures released today suggest

:10:35.:10:37.

the change could also cost the North East economy hundreds

:10:38.:10:40.

of millions of pounds - Here's our Political

:10:41.:10:43.

Editor Richard Moss. But behind the bustle,

:10:44.:10:45.

there's worry. Next year Scotland takes

:10:46.:10:48.

control of its air taxes. The SNP - which runs

:10:49.:10:50.

the government there - That could offer long haul

:10:51.:10:53.

passengers like these a saving of at least ?75 per flight north

:10:54.:10:57.

of the border. We live in Cumbria so it is 18 miles

:10:58.:11:14.

to get hear so to go a little bit further to go up to Glasgow would be

:11:15.:11:21.

easier. We would consider that if there was a significant saving.

:11:22.:11:27.

Widget? Yes, we would. I think we would do that, it is all about

:11:28.:11:30.

suggest if Scotland abolished air taxes, the impact would be

:11:31.:11:35.

Newcastle could lose between 500 and 900,000

:11:36.:11:38.

passengers a year, threatening services, stalling expansion,

:11:39.:11:40.

and taking ?44 to ?78 million out of the North East economy.

:11:41.:11:47.

The Scottish government had signalled their intention to start

:11:48.:11:52.

reducing the rate of tax from next year so the impact could start to

:11:53.:11:57.

happen next year. Airlines are already making their decisions about

:11:58.:12:02.

next year now. That is why we are urging the government that now is

:12:03.:12:05.

there's concern in the business community too.

:12:06.:12:09.

This airport gales with freight as well as passengers,

:12:10.:12:11.

a trade that's grown enormously since Emirates began flights

:12:12.:12:13.

It started in September 2007, we were doing ?20 million worth of air

:12:14.:12:23.

freight out of this airport. This year we will touch 400 million. This

:12:24.:12:30.

just shows what we can do when we actually start something hear but it

:12:31.:12:35.

also reflects what will happen if we put it to risk. -- at risk.

:12:36.:12:38.

would make sure Newcastle Airport did not lose out.

:12:39.:12:43.

But it says it won't now take action until we've left the European Union.

:12:44.:12:46.

What is the point of talking about and Northern Powerhouse if you

:12:47.:12:53.

impact on what -- one of the most important part of a regional

:12:54.:12:57.

infrastructure. It is not good enough for the government to say

:12:58.:13:00.

they will look at after the event. We need some now.

:13:01.:13:02.

The government says it remains committed to supporting

:13:03.:13:12.

But airport managers fear without action soon damage

:13:13.:13:15.

to their business and the region is inevitable.

:13:16.:13:17.

Still to come - Jeff and Steve have all the weekend's football news

:13:18.:13:21.

Two young women meet to chat about family, friends -

:13:22.:13:24.

There is some rain in the forecast. Not all bad news, tomorrow looks

:13:25.:13:36.

like a decent day. Join me later for the full story.

:13:37.:13:38.

They live close to each other in Northumberland,

:13:39.:13:45.

Yet they'd never met - that was until they both discovered

:13:46.:13:50.

They now share their stories of major brain surgery,

:13:51.:13:54.

how they told their families, and fears over their next scans.

:13:55.:13:57.

In a special report to mark Brain Tumour Awareness Month,

:13:58.:13:59.

our health reporter Sharon Barbour has been to meet them.

:14:00.:14:10.

When we heard about the cancer, the as my mum, is she going to die?

:14:11.:14:19.

Natalie Sweeney and Angela Conway both 28, and from neighbouring

:14:20.:14:22.

Northumberland towns of Bedlington and Ashington have

:14:23.:14:24.

I had my surgery a year ago and a month later I decided I should be

:14:25.:14:34.

Angela's had major surgery, although the cancer is still there.

:14:35.:14:41.

We always knew they would not be able to take the entire tumour

:14:42.:14:47.

because of the location sold the surgery was to take as much as

:14:48.:14:51.

possible. We are living with uncertainty. It might never grow

:14:52.:14:56.

again, it could grow in 50 years, we do not know.

:14:57.:14:57.

I get scanned every six months and then they will decide whether to

:14:58.:15:20.

give me more chemotherapy or radiotherapy, they will do that

:15:21.:15:22.

until they cannot do anything anymore.

:15:23.:15:24.

They have both been awareness and money for brain tumour research

:15:25.:15:27.

and treatment and today visited the new Wolfson childhood cancer

:15:28.:15:29.

research centre in Newcastle to meet scientists developing

:15:30.:15:31.

This is not science that we do in a laboratory which has no relationship

:15:32.:15:43.

to the clinic. We work next to the hospital. What is exciting is the

:15:44.:15:49.

ability to turn that science into something which benefits patients.

:15:50.:16:01.

Brain tumours are the leading cause of death in children. Scientists are

:16:02.:16:08.

looking at this to discover what is happening at a cellular level and

:16:09.:16:13.

deliver precise and targeted treatments. Those latest treatments

:16:14.:16:16.

are already helping patients like Natalie. She has been fantastic

:16:17.:16:24.

throughout the whole thing. Good luck for the scan. Thank you.

:16:25.:16:28.

but she's about to undergo an MRI scan - to find out

:16:29.:16:37.

Our very best wishes. Now it is time for a team talk.

:16:38.:17:00.

Thanks, Carol. We're into March, the business end for the football

:17:01.:17:08.

season. Not the time for Middlesbrough and Sunderland to find

:17:09.:17:14.

themselves in their relegation zone. We have been talking about their

:17:15.:17:19.

lack of goals. The danger is that is a gap opening up between the bottom

:17:20.:17:25.

three and the rest. Swansea this weekend. It is a shame that game has

:17:26.:17:32.

been moved. It is clear why it does seem like both teams are going down.

:17:33.:17:36.

They do not score enough goals. This has to be one of the worst free

:17:37.:17:57.

kicks have ever seen. A bit unlucky. He goes a little bit early, he is

:17:58.:18:06.

rightly called offside. They need these ones to go in. Good pass in a

:18:07.:18:13.

great effort but just cannot quite get on target. Sunderland did pretty

:18:14.:18:22.

well in the first half. Needed to hold on to half-time and did not

:18:23.:18:30.

manage it. A little unlucky year. A change of pace. Incredible skill, as

:18:31.:18:40.

was this one, the first Stoke goal against Boro. Well taken goal. Boro

:18:41.:18:49.

had been quite solid defensively but they are just leaking goals and not

:18:50.:18:56.

scoring. Yes, was the first contact and lost the second, very

:18:57.:19:02.

disappointing. They have got decent goalkeepers. Jordan Pickford is

:19:03.:19:07.

backing the team and that work for them. We have to keep going and

:19:08.:19:13.

grinding it out. Unfortunately they got two goals. We were chasing the

:19:14.:19:18.

game. These are the games we have to target and get the wins. On and off

:19:19.:19:24.

the pitch, we have good team spirit, we just have to keep plugging on to

:19:25.:19:30.

get a win. For any team at this time, there is speculation about the

:19:31.:19:34.

manager, do you feel safe about your position? My control is to work

:19:35.:19:48.

harder every day. We shall say. It looks like one or both of those

:19:49.:19:49.

teams will be swapping places. Well it's looking likely that one

:19:50.:19:52.

or BOTH of those teams will be swopping places with Newcastle

:19:53.:19:56.

United. Two tough-looking games -

:19:57.:19:57.

away at the sides immediately above and below them

:19:58.:19:59.

in the Championship - brought the Magpies all six points,

:20:00.:20:01.

taking them 11 clear And when you're on top,

:20:02.:20:03.

you tend to get the breaks, Steve? Just a little bit of contact, as you

:20:04.:20:11.

say, if you work hard to get the results. Newcastle have had a few

:20:12.:20:16.

breaks recently. A well taken penalty. When the Reading game and

:20:17.:20:26.

hopefully, home and dry. You would think so. He just wrestled this away

:20:27.:20:31.

from their goalkeeper. Does not get enough credit for this finish.

:20:32.:20:38.

Huddersfield got back into it but Newcastle just have that resilience.

:20:39.:20:43.

Goalkeeper made some good saves. There is a clever change from the

:20:44.:20:49.

manager later on. You will have sympathy for the keeper year? Yes,

:20:50.:20:56.

just catch it and take a red card. We all have some we want to forget!

:20:57.:21:01.

I will not mention them. They did very well. The work of the team was

:21:02.:21:10.

fantastic. You could say the players at the end, the wheelie celebrated.

:21:11.:21:14.

The connection with the fans. So I feel everybody was pushing, I feel

:21:15.:21:20.

these two games, really pleased. You conceive a response from your

:21:21.:21:25.

players. Great win for Hartlepool and Carlisle are just about managing

:21:26.:21:29.

to hang onto an automatic promotion place. Three defeats in a row. They

:21:30.:21:37.

are just tailing off in the patch are -- NAPAC are catching them.

:21:38.:21:58.

They just cannot keep a clean sheet. Two big wins for Hartlepool. A very

:21:59.:22:09.

bad first half but got a response. Six points just as there were

:22:10.:22:14.

looking to get caught. A great touch with his feet, opens up the goal and

:22:15.:22:20.

smashes it in. A big week for Hartlepool, definitely. It looks

:22:21.:22:24.

like David Jones is starting to turn things around. Gateshead are finding

:22:25.:22:31.

form at the right time. Just outside the play-offs. York City would like

:22:32.:22:38.

they will come off the bottom of the table. It has been a tough couple of

:22:39.:22:43.

years, good to see them coming off the bottom. Looking forward to next

:22:44.:22:45.

week's games. Thanks Steve -catch up

:22:46.:22:47.

with you again next week. Now - away from football,

:22:48.:22:49.

there was ANOTHER gold medal performance from Teesside sprinter,

:22:50.:22:52.

Richard Kilty. In Belgrade, over the weekend,

:22:53.:22:53.

the 27-year-old from Stockton successfully defended his 60m title

:22:54.:22:55.

at the European Indoor Kilty - known as the

:22:56.:22:57.

"Teesside Tornado" - won his heats and then went up

:22:58.:23:00.

through the gears in the final, I don't know what to say,

:23:01.:23:03.
