She's meant to be enjoying her teenage years -

:00:11.:00:15.

but instead Jade Gadd is trapped in her bedroom.

:00:16.:00:17.

The 16-year-old from Durham has a rare genetic condition that

:00:18.:00:20.

Despite this, Jade wants to be able to leave the house and for three

:00:21.:00:25.

years her family has battled for alterations to their home.

:00:26.:00:27.

Our health reporter, Sharon Barbour, has this exclusive report.

:00:28.:00:35.

I would have to use a wheelchair and then I would go to my stairlift

:00:36.:00:47.

and I can not use that while I am spasming so I get stuck.

:00:48.:00:51.

But when she turned into a teenager, she began to show the devastating

:00:52.:00:58.

symptoms of a rare genetic condition.

:00:59.:01:04.

One doctor described it as all body pain.

:01:05.:01:09.

As we filmed, Jade had numerous seizures.

:01:10.:01:24.

She insisted we show them because she says this is what living

:01:25.:01:27.

If Jade is well enough to go out, or if she needs to leave

:01:28.:01:35.

the house to go to hospital, the journey is a perilous one.

:01:36.:01:38.

She must get down a steep stairwell in the house

:01:39.:01:41.

And it's help with these stairs, access to the house and around

:01:42.:01:49.

the house that Jade's parents have been fighting for.

:01:50.:01:51.

We have had three ambulance crews here before to move her

:01:52.:01:53.

when she is having seizures and she has to have an

:01:54.:01:56.

And it's taking a tremendous toll on the family.

:01:57.:02:00.

Her father Tony, a former police officer, is now undergoing his his

:02:01.:02:05.

Neither can work, all of their savings have gone.

:02:06.:02:15.

Durham County Council have told Look North...

:02:16.:02:32.

They say it amounts to a loan which they cannot afford.

:02:33.:02:41.

It's a groundbreaking operation which could change his life.

:02:42.:02:44.

And today five-year-old Finley Ingles from Middlesbrough

:02:45.:02:51.

has undergone surgery in America to treat his rare brain tumour.

:02:52.:02:54.

Well, this is the day that Finley's parents desperately hoped

:02:55.:03:04.

He currently suffers up to 15 seizures in a single day and,

:03:05.:03:12.

for the last 3.5 years, he's tried many different forms

:03:13.:03:14.

of treatment and drugs but nothing has worked.

:03:15.:03:16.

That is why they have always seen this trip

:03:17.:03:18.

to Houston, this operation, as their last chance.

:03:19.:03:21.

They are also aware that this is a very difficult

:03:22.:03:24.

They arrived at Texas Children's Hospital in the early

:03:25.:03:27.

Before they went in, we had a quick word with Cara, Finley's mother.

:03:28.:03:36.

I'm a whole host of emotions rolled into one.

:03:37.:03:40.

I'm just praying that it's everything that

:03:41.:03:43.

He's excited to be at the hospital, believe it or not.

:03:44.:03:54.

Finley went into surgery at around three o'clock your time now.

:03:55.:03:57.

His family said at the time when he went down he was happy and smiling.

:03:58.:04:01.

For all that is happening, he just knows that doctors

:04:02.:04:03.

here in America are going to try and make him feel better.

:04:04.:04:06.

This procedure is being carried out by Daniel Curry,

:04:07.:04:08.

the man who developed laser ablation surgery.

:04:09.:04:10.

The operation is expected to take around six hours but it is thought

:04:11.:04:13.

it will be sometime tomorrow before we get the first indication of how

:04:14.:04:16.

And we'll have an update on Finley's condition

:04:17.:04:21.

A lorry driver from Darlington has appeared in court,

:04:22.:04:27.

accused of bringing down a bridge by driving dangerously.

:04:28.:04:31.

Alan Austen is also charged with criminal damage on the M20

:04:32.:04:34.

in Kent on the August bank holiday last year.

:04:35.:04:36.

He did not enter a plea and the case was referred to the crown court.

:04:37.:04:43.

Last month we told you about Fester, the boxer cross.

:04:44.:04:46.

But, after he featured on Look North, the shelter

:04:47.:04:51.

where he was staying was overwhelmed with offers of a new home.

:04:52.:04:54.

And, this afternoon, Fester left with his new owners.

:04:55.:04:58.

It is easy to look at Fester, a dog who has had a sound thrashing

:04:59.:05:10.

with the ugly stick, and conclude that only his mother

:05:11.:05:12.

But to his new owners, Fester is quite the Bobby Dazzler.

:05:13.:05:24.

He bounces around, he is so happy and loving

:05:25.:05:29.

He loves a good cuddle so it's all very nice.

:05:30.:05:33.

Since Fester's first appearance on Look North a month ago,

:05:34.:05:38.

the Dogs' Trust near Darlington has been overwhelmed with people

:05:39.:05:43.

Once our first appeal went out with yourselves, it was really good.

:05:44.:05:49.

We thank everyone who enquired, everyone that came down and everyone

:05:50.:05:51.

that has adopted another dog instead as well.

:05:52.:05:55.

So you were able to find homes for other dogs?

:05:56.:05:58.

We managed to find some and we have had a lot more visitors to the site

:05:59.:06:04.

He looks a bit like an extra from Lord Of The Rings

:06:05.:06:08.

but when you meet Fester, he is an excellent dog,

:06:09.:06:11.

He has found a home but they are keen to stress

:06:12.:06:14.

here that there are about 100 other dogs that need a home,

:06:15.:06:17.

although none of them are quite as distinctive looking as him.

:06:18.:06:27.

Before we go, the weekend weather with Jen Bartram.

:06:28.:06:38.

Good evening. It is going to be a mild weekend with a lot of cloud

:06:39.:06:45.

around and mad face rain as well. We start Saturday with a mostly dry

:06:46.:06:49.

Ned. There will be blue skies borrowed time but as we go through

:06:50.:06:52.

the morning and two this afternoon that this band of rain will spread

:06:53.:06:56.

in. Most the light and patchy with a lot of cloud around and it will

:06:57.:07:02.

clear later in the day. Temperatures up to a high of 11 degrees and a

:07:03.:07:06.

brisk south-westerly breeze. Sunday starts off with a few outbreaks of

:07:07.:07:10.

rain. That will sink away and we will be left with a dry day, some

:07:11.:07:15.

bright spells for the north-east, a lot of cloud for Cumbria but it will

:07:16.:07:19.

feel decent nonetheless. A brisk breeze from the west and

:07:20.:07:23.

temperatures around 11 or 12 degrees. Next week it is going to

:07:24.:07:27.

stay very mild. Quite windy and cloudy with temperatures up to 13

:07:28.:07:28.

degrees. part of next week, we could see 16

:07:29.:07:34.

Celsius in a few spots. Here is knit with the National output.

:07:35.:07:46.

We have turned things around in the space of a week, with a more

:07:47.:07:52.

springlike feel out there. Some places may get as high as 17 Celsius

:07:53.:08:00.

on Monday. That is the exception, and most of us won't see that.

:08:01.:08:04.

Plenty of cloud throughout this weekend. It is already producing

:08:05.:08:07.

some outbreaks of rain in western and northern parts overnight will

:08:08.:08:15.

stop not amounting to too much, affecting western Scotland later in

:08:16.:08:23.

the night. Early rain in Northern Ireland looks to pull away quite

:08:24.:08:25.

quickly in the morning, spreading south through Scotland. Not very

:08:26.:08:34.

much to the east of high ground. Much of England and Wales starts

:08:35.:08:38.

dry, but with plenty of cloud. Maybe a few

:08:39.:08:39.
