Hello, good evening. Stadium. Natalie

:00:09.:00:11.

The family of a Newcastle woman who died after a heart valve

:00:12.:00:14.

was put in upside-down, are taking legal action

:00:15.:00:25.

In 2015, she went into Newcastle's Freeman Hospital

:00:26.:00:32.

for a routine operation, but suffered massive

:00:33.:00:34.

Our News Correspondent Mark Denten reports.

:00:35.:00:36.

Laughing and joking with her friends.

:00:37.:00:38.

This is Sheila Hynes, the very picture of health.

:00:39.:00:41.

She was a lovely woman, wonderful mother, wonderful grandmother.

:00:42.:00:44.

But Sheila, who was 71, began to feel breathless, she was admitted

:00:45.:00:49.

to the Freeman Hospital for an operation

:00:50.:00:51.

A routine procedure, regarded as having just a 6% risk.

:00:52.:00:55.

The response I got from the nurse when I phoned,

:00:56.:00:59.

She started to say, "Where'd you live?"

:01:00.:01:06.

And she said, there's been complications in the surgery.

:01:07.:01:15.

Sheila Hynes had her operation on March 26 2015

:01:16.:01:17.

It emerged that during her surgery, a valve in her heart had been

:01:18.:01:22.

When they removed the valve, it forced a piece of equipment

:01:23.:01:35.

into the wall of her heart, puncturing it.

:01:36.:01:37.

The next time her heart ballooned up,

:01:38.:01:40.

The family say, while Sheila was fighting for her life,

:01:41.:01:48.

they were treated with gross insensitivity.

:01:49.:01:51.

We were told, it wasn't our choice to turn

:01:52.:01:53.

We said... We were told we had no say in that.

:01:54.:01:59.

In the same meeting, the secretary who was taking notes

:02:00.:02:02.

announced that she already had the coroner booked.

:02:03.:02:06.

This is while your mother is still alive?

:02:07.:02:08.

We applied to the coroner to have it look that as an Article II inquest

:02:09.:02:24.

and what that means is it a human rights consideration that Mrs Hynes

:02:25.:02:27.

lost her right to life as a result of this.

:02:28.:02:29.

This tragic event should never have occurred.

:02:30.:02:33.

Newcastle Hospital Trust has admitted the error

:02:34.:02:36.

and says its thoughts are with the family.

:02:37.:02:39.

They say a full independent investigation has taken place.

:02:40.:02:43.

An inquest into Sheila Hynes' death will take place in June.

:02:44.:02:46.

Mark Denten, BBC look North, outside the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

:02:47.:02:54.

A murder of "unusual savagery and brutality."

:02:55.:03:00.

That's how the judge sentencing a man to life described the attack

:03:01.:03:03.

which led to the death of a mother of two in Carlisle last year.

:03:04.:03:09.

Miklos Verebes will serve a minimum of 28 years after using used a sharp

:03:10.:03:17.

stone to stab his former partner Melinda Koroshi almost 30 times.

:03:18.:03:19.

In September last year Miklos Verebes

:03:20.:03:23.

broke into the home of Melinda Korosi,

:03:24.:03:25.

Neighbours called the police when they heard her screaming,

:03:26.:03:30.

but when officers arrived just four minutes later she was already dead

:03:31.:03:34.

Miklos Verebes standing beside her covered in blood.

:03:35.:03:40.

Initially, he admitted killing her, but later in court tried to claim

:03:41.:03:43.

In sentencing today the judge said that excuse was "absurd".

:03:44.:03:47.

The police today welcomed the sentence given and also read

:03:48.:03:50.

a statement from Melinda Korosi's father.

:03:51.:03:53.

When detectives came to tell me the news,

:03:54.:03:55.

I felt like the earth had been removed

:03:56.:03:57.

from under my feet and suddenly everything became

:03:58.:04:00.

I simply couldn't believe and comprehend something this terrible.

:04:01.:04:07.

If I see a mother walking with their child down a street,

:04:08.:04:10.

The couple originally from Hungary moved to Carlisle

:04:11.:04:20.

in 2012 between then and 2016 Miklos Verebes raped

:04:21.:04:23.

Just days before he murdered her he was released

:04:24.:04:33.

from prison on licence after assaulting her in July.

:04:34.:04:36.

While Verebes was in prison Melinda Korosi came forward

:04:37.:04:38.

to police and told them she'd been raped,

:04:39.:04:41.

he was arrested in relation to those allegations but he wasn't charged

:04:42.:04:44.

he could not to understand why that action was taken.

:04:45.:04:50.

That matter is now being investigated by the Independent

:04:51.:04:53.

Police Complaints Commission and we're told

:04:54.:04:56.

Cumbria Constabulary is fully cooperating with that matter.

:04:57.:04:59.

Detectives are still hunting two men who abducted a woman

:05:00.:05:02.

and her toddler from a busy street, before subjecting the mother

:05:03.:05:05.

The abduction happened on Redcar seafront on Friday lunchtime.

:05:06.:05:10.

Earlier today, officers made an arrest - but that man's been

:05:11.:05:12.

Well, the police had been hoping that this

:05:13.:05:21.

breakthrough that they had been working towards ever since the

:05:22.:05:25.

They released a short statement at lunchtime today to say that a

:05:26.:05:30.

31-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of rape and was being

:05:31.:05:33.

But around tea-time tonight, another statement

:05:34.:05:38.

came out to say that man had been released without charge.

:05:39.:05:42.

So, it could be that they are back to

:05:43.:05:45.

To remind you, the attack itself happened in broad

:05:46.:05:51.

daylight, here on the Redcar seafront, sometimes between 1130 and

:05:52.:05:54.

Police say, the woman, who was with a toddler, was

:05:55.:06:00.

dragged, screaming, into a dark coloured saloon car which was then

:06:01.:06:12.

driven to the secluded area in the near by village of Yearby.

:06:13.:06:14.

There, she was raped and subjected to a

:06:15.:06:16.

Then, the men dumped her and the toddler on

:06:17.:06:26.

Kirkleatham Lane which is just on the outskirts of Redcar.

:06:27.:06:29.

Now, some of you may have seen this incident

:06:30.:06:35.

It's not clear whether that appeal on that actually led to the

:06:36.:06:39.

development in today's investigation.

:06:40.:06:40.

But, tonight, the police are still anxious for more

:06:41.:06:43.

witnesses to come forward and, of course, because this abduction

:06:44.:06:47.

happened here in broad daylight, right in the middle of the day,

:06:48.:06:50.

they are hopeful that more witnesses will come forward.

:06:51.:06:52.

Two people who were jailed for their part in the murder

:06:53.:07:01.

of a Newcastle man with learning difficulties,

:07:02.:07:02.

have had their sentences increased.

:07:03.:07:04.

James Wheatley was jailed for life in December last year

:07:05.:07:06.

But prosecutors argued that the sentences handed

:07:07.:07:10.

his mother - and another man - Barry Imray were unduly lenient.

:07:11.:07:15.

This afternoon the Court of Appeal ruled that Julie Mills,

:07:16.:07:17.

James Wheatley's mother, will have her sentence for causing

:07:18.:07:19.

increased from eight years to 10 years.

:07:20.:07:23.

And Nicole Lawrence, his girlfriend, had her sentence increased

:07:24.:07:26.

Barry Imray's sentence of three years was unchanged.

:07:27.:07:32.

A 19-year-old man's been charged with a murder in York.

:07:33.:07:35.

The dead man's been named as Shaun Skelton who was 53

:07:36.:07:37.

and lived in Holgate Road in the city.

:07:38.:07:42.

Daniel Thomas Reed, who's 19 and of no fixed abode,

:07:43.:07:44.

appeared before city magistrates and was remanded in custody.

:07:45.:07:49.

A nine-year-old boy who was seriously injured

:07:50.:07:51.

after being struck by a car in Hartlepool, has died.

:07:52.:07:55.

Ethan Owens had been in hospital since the incident on Marina way

:07:56.:07:58.

Police are asking anyone who saw what happened to contact them.

:07:59.:08:03.

Plans to build a school, a retail park and hundreds of homes

:08:04.:08:06.

on the site of the current Northumberland County Council

:08:07.:08:08.

Protestors outside County Hall in Morpeth say the proposals

:08:09.:08:13.

will destroy the town's historic character.

:08:14.:08:17.

But Labour councillors insist redeveloping the site,

:08:18.:08:20.

and moving the headquarters to Ashington, will save money

:08:21.:08:22.

The prisons watchdog has raised concerns

:08:23.:08:27.

Inspectors say it's "unacceptable" that most inmates at the city centre

:08:28.:08:33.

prison had to eat their meals in their cells by an

:08:34.:08:36.

They also found that 60% of prisoners felt unsafe.

:08:37.:08:42.

Does the Secretary of State agree with be that it's hard for prison

:08:43.:08:45.

staff to keep themselves and prisoners safe with numbers being so

:08:46.:08:50.

reduced and what she going to do to improve prisoner safety now?

:08:51.:08:54.

The honourable lady is absolutely right

:08:55.:08:57.

about the concerning report about HMP Durham and we are addressing

:08:58.:09:00.

issues about recruitment in that prison, along with prisons

:09:01.:09:02.

What we have done is created 2000 new positions at a more

:09:03.:09:06.

senior grade for experienced officers with mental health

:09:07.:09:09.

training, with other types of training and those positions will be

:09:10.:09:11.

available in Durham which will help us retain some of our experienced

:09:12.:09:14.

In tonight's football - Newcastle edged closer to promotion

:09:15.:09:20.

after a nil-nil draw at promotion contenders Reading.

:09:21.:09:23.

But both their other closest rivals won tonight.

:09:24.:09:25.

In Scotland, meanwhile, a cracking game at Shielfield Park

:09:26.:09:30.

And Paul's here with the weather. A bit sunnier for many of us today.

:09:31.:09:47.

A spell of wet and windy weather spreading in from the west.

:09:48.:09:59.

Temperatures will drop down to 4-5dC at the lowest. A dry bright start to

:10:00.:10:09.

most others. Good sunny spells for many others. Temperatures milder

:10:10.:10:15.

than they have been. To about 12 Celsius. A couple of degrees higher

:10:16.:10:29.

than it has been recently. So there is a weather front coming in

:10:30.:10:34.

tomorrow night. Bringing showery rain but clears to leave a dry and

:10:35.:10:44.

fine day on Thursday. Much more cloud by the end of the week. Not

:10:45.:10:52.

much to choose, breezy on Wednesday than it will be on Tuesday. More

:10:53.:10:57.

cloud and rain by the end of the week. I'll leave you with

:10:58.:11:00.

rain on Saturday. The national picture now from Nick Miller.

:11:01.:11:07.

It looks like next week high pressure will become a player again

:11:08.:11:11.

in our weather, settling things down for some of us for a time but until

:11:12.:11:16.

then it is low-pressure, rain moving across the UK overnight but not wet

:11:17.:11:20.

all the time. Many of us at a fine day today, this was at you from West

:11:21.:11:23.

Yorkshire and Yorkshire and northern

:11:24.:11:25.
