Good evening. Welcome to Look North. | :00:09. | :00:11.
Get tested - that's the message from a family of a Teesside | :00:12. | :00:15.
mum who died of cancer earlier this year. | :00:16. | :00:18.
Ferzana Khan was due to travel to Germany from her Middlesbrough | :00:19. | :00:21.
home for pioneering treatment for the disease after | :00:22. | :00:23.
But she died before she could make the trip. | :00:24. | :00:29.
Now a campaign's been launched to encourage other women from Black, | :00:30. | :00:31.
Asian and minority backgrounds to take a smear test. | :00:32. | :00:34.
That's how Ferzana Kahn's family described the mother-of-four. | :00:35. | :00:43.
She was 41 when she died in January - three years after being diagnosed | :00:44. | :00:46.
Now her relatives have started a campaign to encourage more women | :00:47. | :00:52.
from minority ethnic backgrounds to attend their smear tests. | :00:53. | :00:56.
I think seeing what her family went through, especially young children, | :00:57. | :00:59.
You know, it doesn't matter how old you are. | :01:00. | :01:05.
Even when you're 50, you still need your mum. | :01:06. | :01:08.
So to see a five-year-old crying for his mum is | :01:09. | :01:10.
And there has been, you know, so many other deaths | :01:11. | :01:14.
within the community, people who died of cancer. | :01:15. | :01:17.
With Ferzana, it's closer to home because she was so close to us. | :01:18. | :01:21.
A recent survey by Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust - | :01:22. | :01:25.
the UK's only dedicated charity - showed 30% of Asian women didn't | :01:26. | :01:28.
And a third more black, Asian and minority ethnic women | :01:29. | :01:35.
compared to white women said they had never attended screening. | :01:36. | :01:38.
There is a real fear around the test itself, | :01:39. | :01:44.
And also around what it was going to find. | :01:45. | :01:48.
And this feeling of rather not knowing, the fear about cancer | :01:49. | :01:52.
and cancer being a bit of a taboo subject. | :01:53. | :01:56.
And also embarrassment, being a really big factor in it. | :01:57. | :02:02.
Ferzana's family have now made a film as part of their campaign | :02:03. | :02:05.
to try to encourage more women to turn up for their appointments. | :02:06. | :02:11.
What it is, Doctor, we're going to Pakistan in the morning | :02:12. | :02:14.
Now a lot of people are mentioning | :02:15. | :02:23.
and realising factors affect every | :02:24. | :02:28.
age group, it's not just the old, | :02:29. | :02:31.
it's not just the young, it's indiscriminate. | :02:32. | :02:34.
Earlier screening, Ferzana's friends say, could have helped her, | :02:35. | :02:38.
allowing her more time with the family | :02:39. | :02:43.
Detectives investigating a report of rape in Redcar last Friday, | :02:44. | :02:52.
say the circumstances of the attack are not as first reported. | :02:53. | :02:55.
Cleveland Police say they're no longer looking for two men | :02:56. | :03:00.
who forced a woman and her child into a vehicle on Redcar seafront. | :03:01. | :03:03.
They say enquiries are ongoing into an allegation of rape | :03:04. | :03:05.
involving people who may have known each other. | :03:06. | :03:09.
They're appealing for anyone who may have seen a woman and toddler | :03:10. | :03:12.
in the area of Roseberry Road and Larkswood Road between 4pm | :03:13. | :03:15.
The Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust has issued a statement | :03:16. | :03:22.
the man in charge of Newcastle's hospitals, | :03:23. | :03:28.
The Trust says an investigation is being carried-out into | :03:29. | :03:32.
It said that placing him on extended leave is not an indication | :03:33. | :03:39.
that the matters raised against him will be correct. | :03:40. | :03:44.
They were conflicts which saw thousands of servicemen and women | :03:45. | :03:46.
Today a memorial dedicated to those who fought in the two wars in Iraq | :03:47. | :03:56.
and in Afghanistan was unveiled by the Queen in London. | :03:57. | :03:59.
But some of the families of those who lost loved ones say they feel | :04:00. | :04:02.
More than 800 British military personnel and civilians | :04:03. | :04:10.
Today 2,500 people were invited to this event in London | :04:11. | :04:17.
and a season for every activity under heaven. | :04:18. | :04:31.
?1 million had been raised for the memorial. | :04:32. | :04:33.
But some affected the most by the wars did not get an invite - | :04:34. | :04:37.
like Janice Procter, from Washington. | :04:38. | :04:38.
Her son, Michael Tench, was killed | :04:39. | :04:40.
I didn't even know when it was being unveiled. | :04:41. | :04:45.
Not any form of update to say that this was going to go ahead. | :04:46. | :04:49.
I just kicked out of common courtesy for the respect shown to | :04:50. | :05:02.
all fallen, it's not parents that need the recognition. | :05:03. | :05:05.
Among those at the service was Tony Blair. | :05:06. | :05:14.
The Chilcot Report last year concluded he overstated the threat | :05:15. | :05:16.
and sent ill-prepared troops into battle. | :05:17. | :05:26.
Janice has written to the Prime Minister | :05:27. | :05:31.
She's organising a charity event to raise money | :05:32. | :05:37.
for what's being called "The Peoples' Monument | :05:38. | :05:39.
Jog, walk, run a little from the lighthouse to the coast | :05:40. | :05:45.
road into Sunderland city, ending up at the square. | :05:46. | :05:49.
There's some comfort that a monument has been dedicated to | :05:50. | :05:52.
But there has been controversy today. | :05:53. | :05:58.
Our region paid a heavy price in the conflicts. | :05:59. | :06:11.
The transport secretary Chris Grayling has been in Cumbria | :06:12. | :06:13.
today to announce road widening schemes at roundabouts | :06:14. | :06:15.
?2.6 million will be spent improving traffic flows on the A66 and A595 | :06:16. | :06:19.
ahead of major developments in west Cumbria such as the planned | :06:20. | :06:22.
And he's hinted there may be bigger announcements in the future. | :06:23. | :06:31.
This is a start to what I believe needs to be a rolling programme | :06:32. | :06:34.
There's a huge investment plan down by the coast, | :06:35. | :06:39.
We've got to make sure that this part of Cumbria has infrastructure | :06:40. | :06:45.
These are two small schemes for a start - | :06:46. | :06:52.
A Middlesbrough primary school has put up signs asking parents to put | :06:53. | :06:57.
away their mobile phones and smile at their children when they pick | :06:58. | :07:00.
The signs at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School in Longlands | :07:01. | :07:05.
say "Greet your child with a smile not a mobile." | :07:06. | :07:07.
The school says it's part of an idea to get families | :07:08. | :07:12.
talking at the end of the day - and first reactions seem positive. | :07:13. | :07:22.
Were you surprised when they went up? | :07:23. | :07:24.
When they come to pick their kids from school, they should | :07:25. | :07:28.
be here to do that and talk to them about the day, | :07:29. | :07:31.
not to be chatting on their phones. You know, it's wrong. | :07:32. | :07:36.
Now to what scientists hope will be a giant leap for mankind - | :07:37. | :07:39.
A spectacular event - has been taking place | :07:40. | :07:44.
in Durham tonight - marking the official opening | :07:45. | :07:46.
of an 11.5 million pound university building to house some | :07:47. | :07:48.
Their mission is to unravel some of the greatest | :07:49. | :07:54.
And a little earlier tonight - our reporter Sharon Barbour sent us | :07:55. | :07:59.
Here we are outside the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics | :08:00. | :08:09.
In a moment, were going to speak to a world renowned architect | :08:10. | :08:17.
But, first, let's just find out a little bit about what this | :08:18. | :08:21.
I'm joined by Professor Carlos Frenk, a cosmologist here. | :08:22. | :08:26.
Tell us why it's so exciting to have this building here. | :08:27. | :08:29.
Well, I had the privilege of working at Durham University for 30 years | :08:30. | :08:32.
and I can say without hesitation, this is the most exciting | :08:33. | :08:34.
Where we are opening this wonderful new building that will, | :08:35. | :08:38.
for the first time in the history of modern astrophysics in Durham, | :08:39. | :08:41.
all 150 astronomers in this university will be under one roof. | :08:42. | :08:47.
Now, the question for you, Damien, was to create a building. | :08:48. | :08:51.
Tell us what you've done with the building here. | :08:52. | :08:53.
Well, I wanted to create a building that was in | :08:54. | :08:56.
This is an ancient city with the best cathedral | :08:57. | :09:01.
in the world, so a building that has the robustness and also the softness | :09:02. | :09:04.
Local people, scholars, tourists, will be spending | :09:05. | :09:08.
So I wanted to make it, not an institutional | :09:09. | :09:12.
With wood, with warm materials, with the pleasure and joy | :09:13. | :09:16.
of being in the world of the intellect. | :09:17. | :09:19.
The building is based on geometries that relate to the cathedral, | :09:20. | :09:23.
to the cosmic ideas but it's really just a humble building | :09:24. | :09:25.
That's it from me. Now to the mysteries of the weather with Paul. | :09:26. | :09:54.
One or two eastern areas cold enough for a touch of ground frost. Most | :09:55. | :10:02.
places start fine and dry tomorrow. The cloud heading from the West | :10:03. | :10:11.
through the day. Generally, a lot cloudier than it has been for the | :10:12. | :10:16.
last couple of days. Temperatures should just scraped into double | :10:17. | :10:22.
figures. A light southerly breeze. Tomorrow, a warm front bringing the | :10:23. | :10:28.
cloud and rain. A cold front follows behind. Another one follows as we | :10:29. | :10:37.
head into Sunday. So an unsettled spell as we head into the weekend. | :10:38. | :10:44.
It will start to dry up and brighten up later on Saturday. Temperatures | :10:45. | :10:53.
still make it into double figures. Sunday, temperatures again just into | :10:54. | :10:59.
double figures. I'll leave you with the summary. | :11:00. | :11:01.
day. On Sunday, cloudier, maybe spots of rain. | :11:02. | :11:08.
Good evening, in the spring sunshine we saw temperatures as high as 17.5 | :11:09. | :11:15.
Celsius. Not as warm or Sonning on Friday. Still a lot of dry, settled | :11:16. | :11:19.
weather in the forecast for the next few days. This was the sunset | :11:20. | :11:23.
captured by one of our Weather Watchers. Clear skies there. We have | :11:24. | :11:26.
had increasing amounts of cloud moving in from the West. Through the | :11:27. | :11:30.
remainder of tonight we will continue to see that cloud across | :11:31. | :11:33.
the south-west of England, the Channel Isles, weaving in across | :11:34. | :11:36.
Wales, Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Bringing with it some | :11:37. | :11:40.
outbreaks of drizzly rain, particularly around the coast and | :11:41. | :11:44.
the hills. Further east, clear skies and the coldest temperatures. We are | :11:45. | :11:46.
likely | :11:47. | :11:47. |
