Don't drink Carlsberg beer or any of their product - that is the | :00:08. | :00:12.
extraordinary view of one Leeds MP, who feels so strongly about what | :00:12. | :00:16.
has happened here today - the closure of the Tetley brewery in | :00:16. | :00:20.
Leeds, and the loss of 189 years of history. | :00:20. | :00:27.
Also: A trail of destruction - 7 family cars are torched as | :00:27. | :00:30.

And petal power - a flower arranging as you have probably | :00:33. | :00:39.

:00:52. | :00:59. | ||
Good evening. I am live outside the Carlsberg Tetley brewery in Leeds, | :00:59. | :01:03.
which to ride has closed. Some people just can't believe that this | :01:03. | :01:07.
day has actually happened. Many have come out over the last hour in | :01:07. | :01:13.
tears. This is why. It brings to an end 189 years of brewing history in | :01:13. | :01:19.
Yorkshire. Until recently, the site was producing around 16 that | :01:19. | :01:23.
million pints of beer every year. Now more than 100 people are losing | :01:23. | :01:29.
their jobs. In its heyday, more than 200 people were employed here. | :01:29. | :01:32.
Carlsberg has said that they have closed this down because of one | :01:32. | :01:37.
factor - fewer people are buying beer. But there is a deep heard | :01:37. | :01:44.
here tonight. They used to be a very close-knit community here and | :01:44. | :01:46.
Spencer Stokes has spent the day here. | :01:46. | :01:52.
The final pint brewed, the final shift over, Tetley staff walk away | :01:52. | :01:57.
from 189 years of history. Normal shift was suspended today. Some | :01:57. | :02:01.
workers gathered in the yard, with these men marking their last hours | :02:01. | :02:06.
with the photographs on an iconic sculpture. Staff talk not of their | :02:06. | :02:11.
colleagues or friends but of the Workplace family. We are still | :02:11. | :02:17.
mates on and off shift. We are a close family. We are a team. We are | :02:17. | :02:22.
a family. An emotional day for you today? The very emotional. It was a | :02:22. | :02:27.
long time coming but it is a sad day. Tomorrow, when the brewery is | :02:27. | :02:32.
closed and I come by it and it is not bear... It is there, but not | :02:32. | :02:39.
open - a sad day. My wife works here. She worked here for 11 years. | :02:39. | :02:44.
My son worked here. My other son's wife weightier, so it was a real | :02:44. | :02:51.
family business. A great company to work for. It is the end of an era. | :02:51. | :02:55.
Attention now turns to the future of the multi-million-pound complex. | :02:55. | :02:59.
Some staff will be retained to dismantle it. Next week, demolition | :02:59. | :03:04.
will get under way, but there is no long-term plan for the future of | :03:04. | :03:09.
the side. However, it city-centre location makes it an extremely | :03:09. | :03:13.
valuable asset for Carlsberg and some suspect that is the real | :03:13. | :03:18.
reason for the closure. So on times, big companies like the one that has | :03:18. | :03:23.
decided to close this place could have us all as well as a bank book. | :03:23. | :03:28.
At the moment, it is the bank book that his ruling their thoughts. | :03:28. | :03:33.
Beer making in Leeds will continue after today, with a host of smaller | :03:33. | :03:38.
breweries carrying on where Tetley left off. They want drinkers to | :03:38. | :03:43.
boycott the Carlsberg empire. Falling beer consumption increased | :03:43. | :03:49.
import costs and taxes. It is an economic decision, but | :03:49. | :03:53.
unfortunately the Tetley brewery hearing Leeds had to close. That | :03:53. | :03:57.
was never a decision that was taken lightly. A lot of consideration had | :03:58. | :04:02.
to go into it. From tomorrow, this will no longer be the home of | :04:03. | :04:06.
Tetley's - and within a year, there will be little evidence that this | :04:06. | :04:11.
was once one of the world's largest breweries. | :04:11. | :04:18.
In its heyday, 2000 people were employed by Tetley's in his brewery. | :04:18. | :04:24.
Suppose we use the term end of an era rather glibly, but I have to | :04:24. | :04:28.
say that many of the workers who have left here tonight - to those | :04:28. | :04:33.
who worked for the company over many years - a cherished the place | :04:33. | :04:41.
and its history. We all worked hard. My you could have an extra pint, as | :04:41. | :04:48.
long as nobody saw you! Memories and pints flow every Friday at this | :04:48. | :04:53.
social club. It is here that former Tetley's staff gather to reminisce. | :04:53. | :04:58.
The atmosphere was just great. You know everybody when you were going | :04:58. | :05:03.
around the brewery. You spoke to them, had a crack with them and, | :05:03. | :05:09.
had a bit of a laugh. Tetley's, established by Joshua Tetley, was | :05:09. | :05:14.
that, for many years, a family company. Until the 1970s, family | :05:14. | :05:19.
members were still on the board. An original Tetley landlord remembers | :05:19. | :05:24.
being vetted by the Tadley family before taking on his first bubble. | :05:24. | :05:29.
They took me up to the board room. There were pictures of people who | :05:29. | :05:34.
worked there. Not just people the word in the office - barmaids, | :05:34. | :05:40.
drain men, and it was a fantastic feeling. That age has come to an | :05:40. | :05:46.
end now and it is a sadness. brewery used to produce 200 million | :05:47. | :05:51.
pints of Tetley's every year - a beer love to buy casual drinkers | :05:51. | :06:00.
and connoisseurs. -- beloved by. remember being asked where I came | :06:00. | :06:05.
from and I said Leeds, and a man who did not speak any English said, | :06:05. | :06:11.
Tetley tea's! That gives you an indication of how the firm was | :06:11. | :06:17.
known. Five years ago, this was still the world's most popular cask | :06:17. | :06:23.
ale. Beer was shipped abroad and, until 2001, delivered to to Leeds | :06:23. | :06:33.
by great men. -- pied Dream men. was a really good firm to work for. | :06:33. | :06:39.
People used to look and take photos. It was daft, sitting there in the | :06:39. | :06:45.
rain, but it was a job and I enjoyed it. This move brewed since | :06:46. | :06:50.
1822 was the famous slogan. The brewing will continue but from now | :06:50. | :06:57.
one in Wolverhampton. That is what it means to so many | :06:57. | :07:01.
workers and has meant over the years, but with me now is Greg | :07:01. | :07:05.
Mulholland, B Leeds MP, who feels very strongly about what has | :07:05. | :07:10.
happened here. You want a boycott of Carlsberg products - is that not | :07:10. | :07:16.
too harsh? As consumers and upright citizens of Leeds, there is only | :07:16. | :07:24.
one thing we can do. Carlsberg refuse to engage in discussions. | :07:24. | :07:28.
All we can do is not buy their product. They turned their back on | :07:28. | :07:33.
Leeds, I think the people of Leeds should turn their backs on them. | :07:33. | :07:37.
Many people are very sad and drowning their sorrows, but isn't | :07:37. | :07:42.
this a reality check. Carlsberg had said that fewer people are buying | :07:42. | :07:49.
beer. Carlsberg have been dishonest in their reasons for closing at | :07:49. | :07:55.
this famous brewery. It is a sad day. It is about making money. | :07:55. | :08:00.
Tetley is still a huge seller. Another fact is that cascade beer | :08:00. | :08:07.
is actually increasing and expanding. -- task beer. We have | :08:07. | :08:11.
fantastic small breweries that are keeping the tradition alive. These | :08:11. | :08:16.
will be the theatre of Leeds brewing. The argument that micro- | :08:16. | :08:22.
breweries are doing a better job, cheaper to a certain extent, is not | :08:22. | :08:27.
valid? It is great that we have these wonderful breweries. I am | :08:27. | :08:33.
drinking a pint of Leeds Pale Ale. There are many others. They are the | :08:33. | :08:40.
future. Cars Bowe decided that not only do they not care about Leeds, | :08:40. | :08:44.
but they do not even want to brew Tetley's at all. Someone else is | :08:44. | :08:48.
brilliant for them in a Wolverhampton. It is time people it | :08:49. | :08:57.
showed how they feel about that. -- is brewing it for them up. | :08:57. | :09:03.
We will have more reaction later on. If as you say, scores of you have | :09:03. | :09:07.
been contacting us soap we will be giving your reaction towards the | :09:08. | :09:12.
end of the programme. A grieving couple who lost their | :09:12. | :09:16.
baby after a series of delays during childbirth say they are -- | :09:16. | :09:22.
their confidence in the NHS is shattered. The couple endured a 60 | :09:22. | :09:26.
hour wait before their son Oliver was delivered by Caesarean. This | :09:26. | :09:31.
week, a coroner ruled that the that delay was largely to blame for the | :09:31. | :09:34.
baby's death and has criticised management practices and Dewsbury | :09:34. | :09:39.
hospital. Speaking for the first time, the heartbroken couple told | :09:39. | :09:43.
us their story. For Sarah Dawson and Phillip | :09:43. | :09:46.
Schofield, the joy of seeing their baby all other born last July | :09:46. | :09:55.
quickly turned to heartbreak. -- all over. He hit shortly died after | :09:55. | :10:00.
developing pneumonia. You forget for a time and then it comes back | :10:00. | :10:07.
to you. I felt like I was suffocating. From one day, go into | :10:07. | :10:11.
a healthy pregnancy to having nothing. All the preparations that | :10:11. | :10:18.
you have made - it all has to be spirited away. Philip took Sarah to | :10:18. | :10:21.
Dewsbury hospital for what they thought would be eight routine | :10:21. | :10:25.
birth. But an inquest this week said that Sarah should have been | :10:25. | :10:29.
given an assisted delivery after her waters broke. According to | :10:29. | :10:37.
national guidelines, pregnant women have a choice. Cerys baby was not | :10:37. | :10:43.
delivered until 61 hours after her waters broke. The hospital's policy | :10:43. | :10:49.
is not to carry out inductions at night. I would rather have been | :10:49. | :10:54.
induced to there and then, knowing that my waters had broken. If the | :10:54. | :10:59.
policy was different and they did induce on and night, this | :10:59. | :11:09.
:11:09. | :11:17. | ||
suggestion is this would never have There is absolutely no way that | :11:17. | :11:25.
this should ever happen again. No way at all. It completely ripped | :11:25. | :11:29.
our lives apart and there is no reason why it should ever happen to | :11:29. | :11:33.
anybody else. A while the pain of losing her first child will never | :11:33. | :11:38.
go away, the couple say they are now looking forward, not back. They | :11:38. | :11:41.
hope that lessons can now be learned so that others will not | :11:41. | :11:48.
have to ensure a similar ordeal. The Conservative MP for Shipley has | :11:48. | :11:52.
caused a stir by suggesting that disabled people should be allowed | :11:52. | :11:57.
to work for less than the minimum wage, in order to get a job. Philip | :11:57. | :12:00.
Davies said in the House of Commons that disabled people who were | :12:00. | :12:04.
struggling to find work she a DP a allow it to offer themselves for a | :12:04. | :12:13.
lower rate of pay. -- should be allowed. Given that some people | :12:14. | :12:16.
with the learning disability cannot be as productive in their work as | :12:16. | :12:21.
somebody who has not got a disability of that nature, it was | :12:21. | :12:26.
inevitable that, given the employer was going to have to pay them the | :12:26. | :12:29.
same, they would have to take on the person that would be more | :12:29. | :12:33.
productive and less of a risk. That was during those people a huge | :12:33. | :12:41.
disservice. The chief executive of Mind is with us. Your reaction? | :12:41. | :12:47.
are astonished and quite horrified by these comments. It shows a real | :12:47. | :12:50.
lack of understanding of the experiences of the book with mental | :12:50. | :12:54.
health problems and learning disabilities. It also shows a view | :12:54. | :12:58.
that says that people with a disability should be treated as | :12:58. | :13:02.
second-class citizens, to suggest that somebody should be paid less | :13:02. | :13:08.
than the minimum wage because they have a disability. It feels to us | :13:08. | :13:13.
like it is thoroughly inappropriate and a very out-of-date view. | :13:13. | :13:17.
Davies claimed that he is merely reflecting comments made to him by | :13:17. | :13:23.
constituents. How would you reacted to that? We know that people are | :13:23. | :13:27.
extremely concerned about how they can find their help and support to | :13:27. | :13:32.
get into work, and we know that there is a big job for employers to | :13:32. | :13:36.
make sure they are giving people a fair chance. But to do this in the | :13:37. | :13:40.
context of the amount of money that is being paid feels inappropriate. | :13:40. | :13:44.
If somebody rang me to say that they were extremely cross about | :13:44. | :13:51.
this, because they currently earn the minimum wage and do a decent | :13:51. | :13:57.
job, I would agree. They are terrified that, if these | :13:57. | :14:00.
suggestions went through, they might be paid less to do the same | :14:00. | :14:05.
job. Briefly, do you feel bad to the campaigning you have done over | :14:05. | :14:11.
the years for a quality has been set back somewhat? We would like to | :14:12. | :14:15.
spend some more time with Mr Davies and encourage him to understand | :14:15. | :14:21.
more about mental health problems. We want to see the very strong | :14:21. | :14:27.
rally inquiry but we have seen from disabled people -- the very strong | :14:27. | :14:37.

Two 16-year-old boys were arrested in connection with a rape in Leeds | :14:37. | :14:40.
city centre. O'Gorman was approached by a group of men while | :14:40. | :14:46.
waiting for a bus, she was attacked on Fish Street. -- A woman was | :14:46. | :14:50.
approached. Seven cars had been damaged in a | :14:50. | :14:56.
random arson attack on the same Yorkshire's Street. Angry residents | :14:56. | :15:00.
on Cross Street in Royston said they woke to find vehicles ablaze, | :15:00. | :15:05.
even though some were parked on the run driveways. Police say it is | :15:05. | :15:09.
fortunate that there were not serious consequences of the fire | :15:09. | :15:14.
spreading. This man surveys the remains of his | :15:14. | :15:18.
wife's car. Earlier this morning, even though it was part well down | :15:18. | :15:23.
his drive, it was one of seven cars deliberately set alight in this | :15:23. | :15:28.
quiet or Royston Street. I have had their day off work because I have | :15:28. | :15:35.
to sort it all out. I am really upset and gutted by it. This | :15:35. | :15:39.
appears to be random and widespread. This is his car on the driveway, | :15:39. | :15:45.
the next car was just beyond here, then two silver cars on the corner | :15:45. | :15:49.
and then in the cul-de-sac on the corner, another three were burnt | :15:49. | :15:56.
out. It got everyone on the street talking. You lost two cars? Yes. | :15:56. | :16:02.
How do you feel? I feel a bit sick, actually. I feel sick knowing that | :16:02. | :16:06.
the house was close to getting burnt as well. This woman's car was | :16:07. | :16:11.
due for an MoT before being used on a family holiday. They were woken | :16:11. | :16:15.
in the early hours by a neighbour alerting them to the fire. They | :16:15. | :16:21.
must be off their heads to do something like this. Seven cars. | :16:21. | :16:24.
They could have lost lives. police want help to catch the | :16:24. | :16:30.
arsonist. It is a serious situation, it could have led to somebody being | :16:30. | :16:35.
seriously injured or killed. I would appeal to anybody with | :16:35. | :16:39.
information to contact the police. Frustratingly for the car's owners, | :16:39. | :16:43.
there doesn't appear to be a motive for the attack. For them, it is a | :16:43. | :16:48.
day wasted cleaning up the mess. Russell doesn't know if his wife's | :16:48. | :16:54.
car will ever take to the road again. | :16:54. | :16:59.
Stay with us, lots of reaction on the closure of Tetley's and also | :16:59. | :17:04.
saying it with flowers. York visitor attraction that has global | :17:04. | :17:12.
displays absolutely everywhere, even in bed. -- floral displays. | :17:12. | :17:16.
In the studio, we cannot see if it's raining or not, but we hear | :17:16. | :17:22.
that the rain is just about staying away at Headingley. It is the T20 | :17:22. | :17:27.
Roses match, Yorkshire versus Lancashire, Tanya is there. | :17:27. | :17:31.
We are staying dry at the moment, but we are looking to the heavens. | :17:31. | :17:36.
The rain was predicted at 7pm and we hope that that is wrong. | :17:37. | :17:44.
Lancashire won the toss. It is all going very nicely. With me is | :17:44. | :17:48.
Yorkshire's Joe Sayers, it would be very sad if the rain came, because | :17:48. | :17:52.
this is a great atmosphere. Yes, this is one of the highlights of | :17:52. | :17:57.
the domestic calendar. We beat our rivals at Old Trafford, hopefully | :17:57. | :18:01.
we can do the same tonight. Every time the ball comes to Lancashire, | :18:01. | :18:07.
they get booed to put them off. part of the occasion, difficult for | :18:07. | :18:12.
them to concentrate. Yorkshire are going well, hopefully they can | :18:12. | :18:16.
finish strong. How much confidence do you have getting those two tied | :18:16. | :18:21.
wins? We have a great deal of confidence, we spoke about it in | :18:21. | :18:24.
the dressing room, we know we have played good cricket in patches | :18:24. | :18:28.
through the season. Consistency has been our aim in the last few weeks | :18:28. | :18:34.
and it could be coming this way. Does the rain affect how you may go, | :18:34. | :18:37.
because there are limited overs and it changes what happens? It would | :18:37. | :18:41.
be in our thoughts. But as far as other players are concerned, they | :18:41. | :18:45.
will get their heads down and get on with the job. Is a frustrating | :18:45. | :18:50.
for you to be watching on the sidelines? I would love to be out | :18:50. | :18:53.
there playing, there is a lot of cricket to be played this summer, | :18:53. | :18:57.
along way to go, so hopefully I'll be there soon. Fingers crossed, we | :18:57. | :18:59.
can give you we doubled to celebrate! | :18:59. | :19:07.
Thank you. They move on to 151-2. It may seem like a few minutes ago | :19:07. | :19:10.
that the domestic football season finished but the fixtures for next | :19:10. | :19:15.
season are already upon us. Let's have a look at the first eight | :19:15. | :19:19.
fixtures. Leeds, Barnsley and Doncaster staff their championship | :19:19. | :19:24.
campaigns with a way matches. In League One, Chesterfield are away | :19:24. | :19:29.
to Tranmere and the date for Sheffield in October 15th, that is | :19:29. | :19:34.
the first derby at Bramall Lane. For the full list of fixtures, go | :19:34. | :19:38.
to the website. In rugby league, Featherstone and | :19:38. | :19:42.
Halifax have said they will ban fans found to be making trouble | :19:42. | :19:48.
after the Northern rail semi-final Cup match last night. A lot of | :19:48. | :19:52.
trouble at that, fighting inside and outside the ground, it marred a | :19:52. | :19:57.
great game that Halifax won 31-30 in sudden-death extra time. They | :19:57. | :20:04.
will face Jewsbury -- they will face Dewsbury or Leigh on Sunday. | :20:04. | :20:09.
And on Monday, another sporting event, hurried Rasham will be | :20:09. | :20:13.

will stun you. Fairfax House is a refuge of George | :21:05. | :21:09.

have had 20 students involved in this project and three lecturers. | :21:40. | :21:45.
We have had lots of prep. The public will come and have a look at | :21:45. | :21:49.
this and say, that is different. We have had comments from people in | :21:49. | :21:53.
the house saying it is lovely, it is so different. Hopefully it will | :21:53. | :21:58.
inspire the public. In the dining room, floral puddings looked good | :21:58. | :22:03.

flowers to inspire them. Arrangements of real flowers just | :22:16. | :22:21.

She has a small vase with flowers stuffed in them. There is no idea | :22:28. | :22:35.
of arrangement. That is a much more recent idea. They might look like | :22:35. | :22:39.

Very wet this weekend. The 10 K and Sunday, looks better, sunshine and | :23:24. | :23:31.

This weather system for tomorrow, and lurking behind me, next week's | :24:10. | :24:14.
weather. Next week looks very unsettled with showers and longer | :24:14. | :24:18.
spells of rain. Headingley, what did Trant light we are getting, | :24:18. | :24:23.
attack from the West and the says. I reckon by 7:30pm, the rain will | :24:23. | :24:28.
move through West Yorkshire, so not long left. The rain, showery at | :24:28. | :24:33.
first merging to give longer had bits of brain tonight. Some of that | :24:33. | :24:37.
could be on the heavy side and temperatures drifting back to ten | :24:37. | :24:42.
degrees Celsius, 50 degrees in Fahrenheit. The sun will rise in | :24:42. | :24:48.
the morning at 4:34am. These are the high water times. A very poor | :24:48. | :24:52.
start to the weekend with showers and longer outbreaks of rain. Some | :24:52. | :24:57.
of the rain will be heavy and persistent. First into south | :24:57. | :25:01.
Yorkshire, this is buried will brighten up first. Open to question | :25:01. | :25:04.
if it will clear North Yorkshire. We think it could, but there will | :25:04. | :25:10.
be allotted showers and the sky should brighten a little bit. The | :25:10. | :25:16.
wind should be in the West, but East at first. The 15-17 Celsius | :25:16. | :25:21.
with sunshine and showers for Sunday. The June washout. | :25:21. | :25:26.
Sunday, not good. It is a better day, but there | :25:26. | :25:31.
should be more sunshine about. OK, not counting your chickens! | :25:31. | :25:34.

the closure of Tetley's, I know Harry is there, let's read some of | :25:38. | :25:43.
the things that have come into the office. John says it is the Leeds | :25:43. | :25:46.
brewery for me from now on, they keep jobs in the area. Linda says | :25:46. | :25:52.
it is a shame, there would be dreadful flats and offices on the | :25:52. | :25:56.
site after the glory. What an insult that would be. And Ian | :25:56. | :26:01.
Williamson said it is a very sad day, I worked there for six years | :26:01. | :26:05.
in the 1990s, and I ended up in California selling tatties to the | :26:05. | :26:10.
Americans. To see it no longer breeding Yorkshire is that true be | :26:10. | :26:19.
sad occasion. -- to see it no longer brood in Yorkshire. | :26:19. | :26:24.
We have found a lot of reaction on Facebook, Gary has said it is a | :26:24. | :26:27.
tragedy for the people that have supported the brand for years, | :26:27. | :26:34.
shame on Carlsberg. One person says, Tetley's was a rank, boring, brown | :26:34. | :26:39.
bear any way. He sounds like a nice chap! Dave and Carol are with me, | :26:39. | :26:45.
they worked for the company for 23 years. You're very sad tonight? | :26:45. | :26:50.
it has been fantastic working there. We loved every minute of it. I had | :26:50. | :26:55.
been there nearly 34 years, could not have wished to workaday Badger | :26:55. | :26:59.
