Good evening, welcome to Tuesday's Look North. Tonight: rising debts - | :00:03. | :00:06.
calls to crackdown on the doorstep lenders encouraging struggling | :00:06. | :00:10.
families to take out loans they can't repay. | :00:10. | :00:19.
Also tonight - what Yorkshire makes of the Olympic dream. We are life | :00:19. | :00:23.
at the Olympic park where it has been a grand Yorkshire Day Out. We | :00:23. | :00:28.
will discuss how benefits if -- businesses are benefiting from the | :00:28. | :00:32.
games and we will tour the stadium. And Speeding ahead - a petrol heads | :00:32. | :00:37.
paradise. The students who've designed their own racing car. | :00:37. | :00:42.
Richmond was looking great today, there could be more sunshine it in | :00:42. | :00:52.
:00:52. | :00:57. | ||
The South Yorkshire MP is calling for a change in the law to stop | :00:57. | :01:00.
companies from supplying loans to vulnerable people and charging | :01:00. | :01:06.
interest rates of up to 4,000 %. Dan Jarvis says several of his | :01:06. | :01:09.
constituents have come to him for help because they have got into | :01:09. | :01:14.
financial difficulty. This woman in Barnsley knows what | :01:14. | :01:19.
it is like to be targeted by doorstep lenders. She borrowed 100 | :01:19. | :01:26.
and pays back 150. We have protected her identity. Why did you | :01:26. | :01:31.
do it? Family circumstances. It was quick and easy and there were no | :01:31. | :01:36.
background checks. You could have money there and then. How did you | :01:36. | :01:42.
get out of it? I paid them off and said, please do not call any more. | :01:42. | :01:46.
I don't want to get into trouble. They badgered me every time I went | :01:46. | :01:54.
past on the street. This is where many come for help. Credit unions | :01:54. | :01:57.
like this one are seeing more and more people who have run up debts | :01:57. | :02:03.
with loan companies. People get to a point whereby if a doorstep | :02:03. | :02:07.
lender will not come the door. They are that desperate, they will take | :02:07. | :02:10.
it. It is only afterwards that they realise what they have got | :02:10. | :02:15.
themselves into. They are at the end of their tether. They don't | :02:15. | :02:21.
know what to do and who to turn to. The credit union now has more than | :02:21. | :02:27.
3,000 members. Around 80 % of them have borrowed money from loan firms, | :02:27. | :02:33.
at rates of up to 4,000 %. Working door to door in Sheffield, this man | :02:33. | :02:37.
used to offer loans to people needing cash. How did you feel | :02:37. | :02:43.
about the job you're doing at the time? If it was grubby. I wasn't | :02:43. | :02:49.
happy with it. I only did it for 12 months. It wasn't a pleasant job at | :02:49. | :02:57.
will. I was glad to pack it in. You realise when you were doing it, | :02:57. | :03:01.
that you were exploiting people. as people struggled to pay the | :03:01. | :03:05.
bills, it is not hard to see how loan companies get their business. | :03:05. | :03:13.
To many families, they feel they have no other option. | :03:13. | :03:21.
A number of you have been getting in touch about this issue. Peter | :03:21. | :03:25.
Golding said, I have had them come to my door selling their services. | :03:25. | :03:32.
Last time you could get 100 pounds of high streets for edges -- | :03:32. | :03:42.
:03:42. | :03:43. | ||
veggies and pay them back. -- and vouchers. Joanne says, the problem | :03:43. | :03:49.
is people on low income at don't have anywhere else to go. Who else | :03:50. | :03:58.
can help them at other than a loud -- loan shark? | :03:58. | :04:02.
London 2012 is drawing closer and today was the day Yorkshire | :04:02. | :04:05.
companies and athletes got to see behind the scenes of the Olympic | :04:05. | :04:09.
Park. Tanya joins us live from there now. | :04:09. | :04:18.
This of course is the Olympic stadium ready ahead of scheduling. | :04:18. | :04:21.
Further round there, that is where the basketball will be played. | :04:21. | :04:29.
There is that beautiful curved roof which is the feller drone. There is | :04:29. | :04:33.
a huge amount of building still going on. Yorkshire has had a huge | :04:33. | :04:38.
part to play in this. From the footbridge to the roads, to the | :04:38. | :04:43.
steel girders, even the wild flowers that are going to be dotted | :04:43. | :04:48.
around here. Yorkshire has played its part -- it's part. If they have | :04:48. | :04:55.
spent quite a bit of money there. Marking the occasion and the page. | :04:55. | :04:59.
An Olympic branding. These products go on sale in August and every one | :04:59. | :05:05.
of them will have come from a warehouse in Pickering. Being part | :05:05. | :05:13.
of it in terms of a souvenir makes us proud. The forecast for the | :05:13. | :05:19.
Olympics products would mean our forecast is 20 % more next year in | :05:19. | :05:23.
terms of Paul Cooke related gives the sold. There is no doubt we | :05:23. | :05:33.
would have expanded. How much of the economy benefits are our art | :05:33. | :05:41.
remain to be seen it. 200 contractors have been involved. | :05:41. | :05:45.
Representatives from some of those firms have been given a chance to | :05:45. | :05:50.
witness their work first hand. David Preston's company has | :05:50. | :05:57.
transported Ovett 1,500 vehicles worth of steel to the side. -- over | :05:57. | :06:07.
:06:07. | :06:10. | ||
We have delivered steel and concrete. To see the culmination of | :06:10. | :06:14.
it up in the air and ready is incredible. It is a privilege to | :06:14. | :06:22.
see this. It gives me an immense sense of proud -- pride. It is hard | :06:22. | :06:27.
to put a figure on how much our economy will benefit. They have | :06:27. | :06:31.
spent time and money attracting local business to Yorkshire. | :06:31. | :06:38.
Perhaps the best place to decide what will be a success. | :06:38. | :06:43.
I caught up with the chairman of Yorkshire gold, Gary Verity, I | :06:43. | :06:47.
asked him how much money did need to be generated for this to have | :06:47. | :06:54.
been deemed a success? If it is difficult to put a figure on it. If | :06:54. | :06:59.
you look at the success Yorkshire has had so far, if you look at the | :06:59. | :07:09.
:07:09. | :07:10. | ||
smattering of people that have been here, they have produced 80 % of | :07:10. | :07:16.
the hard paving people will be standing on. 50 % of the timber has | :07:16. | :07:23.
been supplied by S. There is another 450 million of business up | :07:23. | :07:27.
for grabs and we need to make sure that we get some of that. | :07:27. | :07:31.
How much money has been spent trying to generate the Business and | :07:31. | :07:37.
teams come to the region? Generating teams has been peanuts | :07:37. | :07:42.
in the great scheme of things. There are many of these businesses | :07:42. | :07:46.
that you featured as had been featured in the past, who are | :07:46. | :07:49.
heavily into the construction industry which has taken a big dip | :07:49. | :07:57.
in the economic downturn we are in. It is -- it is clear to see what it | :07:57. | :08:01.
is doing for London. Thousands will be coming here and seeing London. | :08:01. | :08:06.
How does that affect Yorkshire? If they are not looking at Yorkshire. | :08:06. | :08:12.
They will be because they have spent six days coming through | :08:12. | :08:16.
Yorkshire. From the tourism point of view, people have a choice, if | :08:16. | :08:23.
they are coming overseas, they can either stop in London with all the | :08:23. | :08:28.
pluses and minuses of that, or they can come to Yorkshire. There are | :08:28. | :08:37.
many benefits for us. To give you an idea of some of the things up | :08:37. | :08:45.
for grabs, they want 23-27 temporary saunas. That contract is | :08:45. | :08:50.
up for grabs. Join me later when we will be taking a tour of the park | :08:50. | :08:54.
and going inside the stadium. A thank you for that. | :08:54. | :08:58.
Let us return to our top story and the South Yorkshire MP calling for | :08:58. | :09:01.
a change in the law to stop companies from supplying loans to | :09:02. | :09:05.
vulnerable people and charging interest rates of up to 4,000 cent. | :09:05. | :09:10.
Dan Jarvis has said his constituents have come to him for | :09:10. | :09:15.
help because they have got into financial difficulty. He joins us | :09:15. | :09:20.
now from Westminster. How have your constituents been affected? It has | :09:20. | :09:26.
been clear that there is an issue in these difficult times, of people | :09:26. | :09:32.
who have been taken advantage of by the legal loan sharks who have | :09:32. | :09:36.
offered money at extortionate rates. Because of their lack of | :09:36. | :09:40.
availability of affordable credit, people have fallen into the trap of | :09:40. | :09:45.
taking these loans at a high rate. This has been a real issue. Tonight | :09:45. | :09:48.
we have the chance to persuade the Government to do something about it. | :09:48. | :09:51.
This was agreed in polymers five months ago that something would be | :09:51. | :09:59.
done. That hasn't happened. -- this was agreed in Parliament. We have | :09:59. | :10:05.
to regulate this market to reduce this problem. Many people will be | :10:05. | :10:08.
alarmed that there are interest rates of several thousand %. That | :10:08. | :10:18.
:10:18. | :10:19. | ||
It shouldn't be legal. In these difficult times when lots of people | :10:19. | :10:23.
are facing the pinch, if you do need credit, if you need to borrow | :10:23. | :10:26.
money to get through these difficult times, you should take | :10:26. | :10:33.
proper advice. In my constituency in Barnsley, from the South | :10:33. | :10:37.
Yorkshire credit union or other unions that exist across Yorkshire. | :10:37. | :10:45.
Not to take loans that are extortionate. It should not be | :10:45. | :10:48.
legal and we are trying to force the Government to bring in | :10:48. | :10:51.
legislation to make sure they are not able to do it in the way they | :10:51. | :10:57.
are at the moment. The effects on people are incalculable. Will the | :10:57. | :11:01.
Government listen and do something about this? I am not confident. We | :11:01. | :11:07.
still don't know what way the Government will respond. I hope the | :11:07. | :11:12.
Government will do the right thing, see sense and agree to this | :11:12. | :11:15.
amendment. It is in the interests of hundreds of thousands of people | :11:15. | :11:19.
across the country who have fallen into it vicious circles of debt | :11:19. | :11:23.
because they have taken out these loans at extortionate rates. I | :11:23. | :11:27.
don't think it is right that these companies should be able to operate | :11:27. | :11:32.
in a way that they do. They shouldn't be allowed to get away | :11:32. | :11:38.
with it. Thank you very much for joining us. | :11:38. | :11:42.
If tonight, the parents of a soldier from Wakefield to deaden | :11:42. | :11:45.
Afghanistan have collected a medal from the Queen on his behalf. | :11:45. | :11:48.
Corporal Matthew Stenton was shot as he attempted to rescue another | :11:48. | :11:52.
soldier. He was awarded a posthumous Military Medal for his | :11:52. | :11:57.
medal -- for his bravery. The great and the good went to | :11:57. | :12:03.
Buckingham Palace today to be honoured by the Queen. Unknown to | :12:03. | :12:11.
them, there was an earlier ceremony, and Military Cross given to | :12:11. | :12:16.
Corporal Matthew Stenton. He gave his life to his country and friend. | :12:16. | :12:21.
He tried to save a wounded soldier while himself under heavy fire in | :12:21. | :12:31.
:12:31. | :12:31. | ||
Afghanistan. For his comrades, the medal and a -- the man, a sense of | :12:31. | :12:37.
grief and pride. He was amazing. It is great that the country | :12:37. | :12:44.
recognises the extreme act of bravery. It is immense and we are | :12:44. | :12:52.
so proud of him. Matthew was buried last summer by his colleagues. A | :12:52. | :13:01.
tragedy for his family. They have spoken of their pride in their son. | :13:01. | :13:08.
Matthew Stenton chose to be buried here in a military ceremony among | :13:08. | :13:15.
the fallen. Amongst the graves of many before him. Confirmation that | :13:15. | :13:25.
:13:25. | :13:26. | ||
The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield welcomed its 100,000th visitor this | :13:26. | :13:30.
afternoon, less than five weeks after it was officially opened. The | :13:30. | :13:32.
gallery, which is the largest exhibition space outside London is | :13:32. | :13:35.
home to pieces created by Dame Barbara Hepworth, and other local | :13:35. | :13:40.
talent. The 35 million building has brought home some rare works | :13:40. | :13:50.
:13:50. | :13:51. | ||
from the Wakefield-born artist. Campaigners for a high speed rail | :13:51. | :13:54.
link to Yorkshire have gathered in Leeds Millennium Square today. The | :13:54. | :13:56.
Government has already backed a project to develop a high speed | :13:56. | :13:59.
line to Birmingham. But campaigners want to make sure plans to extend | :13:59. | :14:03.
the 200 mile per hour train service to Leeds are followed through. They | :14:03. | :14:06.
say the economic benefits of such a service would bring millions of | :14:06. | :14:13.
pounds worth of business to the region. We want to bring it to | :14:13. | :14:18.
Yorkshire to close the north, south divide. We want to reduce journey | :14:18. | :14:23.
times to London. We want businesses to invest in Yorkshire. I believe | :14:23. | :14:28.
by closing that gap and reducing journey times, we can bring that | :14:28. | :14:30.
about. Residents on an estate in | :14:30. | :14:34.
Chesterfield are campaigning to have a bus service reinstated. Last | :14:34. | :14:37.
month, the bus company diverted one of its services away from their | :14:37. | :14:42.
homes. Instead they face an uphill walk to the closest stop, and there | :14:42. | :14:47.
are fears some elderly people might now be stuck at home. | :14:47. | :14:51.
Still to come: Speeding ahead. The schoolchildren who've designed | :14:51. | :15:01.
:15:01. | :15:05. | ||
Well, let's go back to the Olympic Stadium. Tanya, you're one of few | :15:05. | :15:09.
people who's actually been inside. So, the burning question is, what | :15:09. | :15:15.
is it like? And we were very privileged. We | :15:15. | :15:21.
were allowed onto the bus! It is hard to explain. I have been in a | :15:21. | :15:27.
lot of stadiums, but it had a ready nice feeling about it. It might be | :15:27. | :15:33.
a strange thing to say, but it had a nice feeling to it. It is about | :15:34. | :15:39.
the sport, and we were very lucky to get a tour around the whole site. | :15:39. | :15:46.
It is about the size of Alton Towers. A couple of Yorkshire | :15:46. | :15:49.
athlete were with us, who will hopefully be competing here next | :15:49. | :15:55.
year. We had a special tour guide. The Olympic gold medallist triple- | :15:55. | :16:00.
jumper Jonathan Edwards. I have been involved in this since the bid | :16:00. | :16:08.
phase. We always said it was not just about two weeks of Olympic | :16:08. | :16:14.
sports and a weaker Paralympic sport, it was about the country -- | :16:14. | :16:23.
a week of Paralympic sport. This is great, coming here. I have been so | :16:23. | :16:33.
excited about this. Matin burn-out was also on board. | :16:33. | :16:37.
The aquatic centre where Jack hopes to dive is one of the iconic | :16:37. | :16:42.
buildings. This was as close as we got. It looks great from the | :16:42. | :16:48.
outside. It looks magnificent. It would be nice to go inside. It is | :16:48. | :16:51.
so much more impressive when you were here. It is bigger than I | :16:51. | :16:57.
thought it was going to be. lackeys around 450 hectors, about | :16:57. | :17:02.
three and a half kilometres long, and takes 20 minutes to walk from | :17:02. | :17:07.
end to end. We got to stop at the Olympic Stadium and get off to take | :17:07. | :17:17.
a boat aground. It is absolutely great. It is massive! Everything | :17:17. | :17:24.
looks fantastic. The it is lovely! It is nerve-racking. You get goose | :17:24. | :17:31.
bumps. We stared where you could be competing -- we are stowed away you | :17:31. | :17:37.
could be competing. Hopefully, it will not be as hard as this. I hope | :17:37. | :17:43.
above be here next year. You do tours like this regularly. Is the | :17:43. | :17:48.
reaction always the same? Completely. Even that I was here | :17:48. | :17:53.
three weeks ago, I get all struck. The transformation of this site is | :17:53. | :18:03.
:18:03. | :18:05. | ||
amazing. I think what has been achieved here is fantastic. | :18:06. | :18:10.
still live in the north-east, not a million miles from Yorkshire. Do | :18:10. | :18:16.
you feel you have to sell the games outside of London? There is a sense | :18:16. | :18:23.
of people thinking, it is fantastic the UK has the game's, but what is | :18:23. | :18:29.
in it for us? When I sit down with people and say this is our | :18:29. | :18:32.
education programme, these are the businesses which have won contracts | :18:32. | :18:39.
and this is what is happening, people think, there is a real | :18:39. | :18:42.
effort to here and a will to make the benefits of the game spread | :18:42. | :18:50.
beyond London. I think there is a lot to be proud of. Aalto people | :18:50. | :18:56.
disappointed they missed out on tickets. Using that has dented it? | :18:56. | :19:06.
:19:06. | :19:06. | ||
People are disappointed, obviously. I understand that. The reality is | :19:06. | :19:11.
that, there was only so many tickets. Many more people applied, | :19:11. | :19:15.
so there was always going to be that disappointment. They will be | :19:15. | :19:18.
about another million tickets released towards the end of the | :19:18. | :19:22.
year. They run lots of free events, like the road cycling, that should | :19:22. | :19:30.
be very good from the British perspective. When you're here, | :19:30. | :19:34.
looking around, do you wish you could roll back the clock and be | :19:34. | :19:39.
out there going for gold again? have never had that moment of | :19:39. | :19:47.
regret, but being here and thinking what it would be like, I would love | :19:47. | :19:52.
to have been competing here. It will be an experience like none | :19:52. | :19:56.
other for British athletes. Again she would expect someone like me to | :19:56. | :20:01.
be pretty excited by being here, but when you saw excitement from | :20:01. | :20:04.
Martin Byrne lad who has competed around the world, you raided got a | :20:04. | :20:14.
sense of what these games will mean. 's a Jonathan said he was awestruck. | :20:14. | :20:24.
-- Jonathan said he was awestruck. They are ban on track now and most | :20:24. | :20:32.
things that ahead of schedule. -- most things are ahead of Schedule. | :20:32. | :20:37.
The inside of the aquatic centre is spectacular. They have kept diving | :20:37. | :20:41.
boards. They are magnificent. Everything is very much going to | :20:41. | :20:47.
plan. It is a very calm feeling. There is no sense they are having | :20:47. | :20:54.
to rush. Thank you, Tanya. I am sure there is a sense of relief. | :20:54. | :20:57.
Just one update to bring you in other sporting news. Doncaster | :20:57. | :20:59.
Rovers have this evening announced the signing of defender Tommy Spurr | :20:59. | :21:02.
from South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday. The left-back, | :21:02. | :21:04.
seen here scoring against Barnsley in 2010, has signed a two-year | :21:04. | :21:08.
contract for an undisclosed fee. He made over 200 appearances for the | :21:08. | :21:11.
Owls, and is expected to be a much needed addition to bolster Donny's | :21:11. | :21:17.

we got to motor racing was watching it on the telly. But these days, | :21:21. | :21:24.
they do motor racing at school, if you're in Filey, that is. Eight | :21:24. | :21:27.
young teenagers at Filey School have been working for months on | :21:27. | :21:30.
their very own racing car, and they'll be taking it to compete at | :21:30. | :21:35.
the Croft Race Circuit next Wednesday. Cathy Killick's been to | :21:35. | :21:45.

The Filey Flyer is not your average racing car, and this is not your | :22:01. | :22:06.
average track. It is a school playground. But carries been put | :22:06. | :22:11.

There is no engine, just two 12 fault batteries. A favoured Pat has | :22:27. | :22:32.
been getting their car to work. We thought it would take ages and ages, | :22:32. | :22:37.
but we managed to get it working in the end -- my favourite part has | :22:37. | :22:46.
been getting their car to work. This is what it will before, a race | :22:46. | :22:51.
where it pays to be a tortoise, not a hair. We have to get as many | :22:51. | :23:01.
miles in four hours as we can. I am getting a bit nervous. There is | :23:01. | :23:09.
five drivers. You have to keep checking the batteries. As well as | :23:09. | :23:13.
the engineering involved, the children have learned to work as an | :23:13. | :23:23.

efficient pits stop team. What are the chances? Realistically, if we | :23:24. | :23:33.
can stay on there for four are was, that would be superb. If they make | :23:33. | :23:43.

the top three, Goodwood beckons for the Grand Final. | :23:44. | :23:54.
