Good evening and welcome to Look North. Our main news tonight: Lord

:00:02.:00:09.

Harewood, the Queen's cousin, has died at the age of 88. His name,

:00:09.:00:17.

and his home, at Harewood House became synonymous with Yorkshire.

:00:17.:00:21.

We'll look back at the life of a member of the royal family who

:00:21.:00:25.

loved the arts but was also no stranger to the scandal of the day.

:00:25.:00:29.

Also this evening - tragedy on the tracks. A man is dead and a three

:00:29.:00:32.

year-old girl critically injured after being hit by a train near

:00:32.:00:36.

Doncaster. And maize magic - we get a bird's eye view of the boy wizard

:00:36.:00:42.

as Potter-mania comes to York. And it is the of the 153rd Great

:00:42.:00:47.

Yorkshire Show. It is the biggest in England. But will there were

:00:47.:00:50.

thus defying? I will be live from the show ground later in the

:00:50.:01:00.
:01:00.:01:03.

programme. -- will the weather stay Tonight, he loved Opera and Leeds

:01:03.:01:09.

United - but most of all Harewood House. Lord Harewood admitted he

:01:09.:01:13.

didn't have enough money to run his estate, so he opened it up and

:01:13.:01:16.

created one of the successful tourist attractions in the country.

:01:16.:01:20.

He was divorced and remarried in 1967, which at the time was frowned

:01:20.:01:23.

upon by the Church of England. Tonight he's remembered though for

:01:23.:01:28.

his rich legacy to Yorkshire. As Ian White reports. Lord Harewood,

:01:28.:01:32.

born in 1923. He was well known throughout Yorkshire, simply for

:01:32.:01:38.

being a cousin of the Queen. But the rows more to the man who led an

:01:38.:01:41.

amazing and controversial life. These were the last pictures of an

:01:41.:01:45.

filmed in November. Despite his failing health, his sense of humour

:01:45.:01:50.

showed, as he talked about the statue of Adam that leaves nothing

:01:50.:01:54.

to the imagination. He remembers some admirers being shocked by what

:01:54.:02:04.
:02:04.:02:07.

the Max of. Adam was a very man, the original progenitor of the race,

:02:07.:02:15.

and he had sexual parts. And if that cause them pain, they must of

:02:15.:02:19.

lead a very sheltered life. He was born six than line to the throne.

:02:19.:02:24.

He was the grandson of King George that if the Queen Mary. This was

:02:24.:02:29.

his christening. As a boy unit in royal circles. He moved on to the

:02:29.:02:33.

Grenadier Guards and fork in Italy during the war, and was captured by

:02:34.:02:40.

the Germans and spent one year as a prisoner. He was able to

:02:40.:02:45.

concentrate on his love of opera in peacetime. I started working in

:02:45.:02:53.

1953, around the time of the Coronation. I Caine in three times

:02:53.:02:59.

a week than -- I was getting paid three times more than Joan

:02:59.:03:05.

Sutherland, and she was not getting very much! And Lord Taylor derived

:03:05.:03:12.

with his best man. Has managed to the constant PDS -- the concert

:03:12.:03:21.

pianist Marion Steen made news in 1959. He was later stumped by the

:03:21.:03:24.

Royals for a decade. He was not invited to the funeral of the Duke

:03:24.:03:29.

of Windsor. He was a keen football supporter, and passionate about

:03:29.:03:35.

Leeds United. He was the club president for almost 50 years. This

:03:35.:03:39.

was 1969, presenting the Charity Shield Trophy to Billy Bremner, at

:03:39.:03:45.

Elland Road. In latter years he was forced to Tom the family warm-up on

:03:45.:03:50.

an estate near Leeds into one of Yorkshire's most popular tourist

:03:50.:03:55.

attractions. Seales in public life recently, he will be fondly

:03:55.:04:02.

remembered, and succeeded by his son, David. That is an incredible

:04:02.:04:07.

legacy. I know that you spoke to him on his 80th birthday. What do

:04:07.:04:12.

you remember from that occasion? was a great character, always had a

:04:12.:04:17.

mischievous twinkle in his eye. He spoke about his Joe to. He talked

:04:17.:04:21.

about his cousin the Queen. And many of the people he had been

:04:21.:04:28.

fortunate enough to meet over the years. I was obliged to look back

:04:28.:04:33.

and produced this booklet about my life and looking over the

:04:33.:04:42.

photographs, you inevitably remember those days. I am quite

:04:42.:04:51.

amused to look back to deny was a little boy. When I was a little boy.

:04:51.:04:57.

There is one picture of me, unmistakably, with a lot of

:04:57.:05:03.

chickens. I do not remember that, at all. You have let a privileged

:05:03.:05:09.

life, not just because of all this but because of all them -- all the

:05:09.:05:18.

people you have made, politicians and sports personalities.

:05:18.:05:24.

remember back most of the people I have met, I have liked. A great

:05:24.:05:30.

character. We can going out to the gates of Harewood House. I am sure

:05:30.:05:37.

that the village is saddened. What has been the the action there?

:05:37.:05:42.

evening, the family of log here would are gathered at the estate,

:05:42.:05:46.

spending time at the House, in private, following the death of lot

:05:46.:05:52.

here would, clearly a difficult time, and for many people,

:05:52.:05:58.

particularly for the staff, who are extremely upset and shocked at the

:05:58.:06:03.

News of the death of Lord Harewood. He was a big figure in the village.

:06:03.:06:08.

Underside before the people of Leeds. The tributes to the show you

:06:08.:06:14.

how big an impact he had. He was due to celebrate his 50th year as

:06:14.:06:18.

president of Leeds United. The chairman, Ken Bates, has paid

:06:18.:06:23.

tribute to him. He said that although he was royalty he always

:06:23.:06:28.

treated me is an equal. I feel that I have lost a true friend, and

:06:28.:06:32.

Legion eight it has lost a true friend. He's a huge amount of money

:06:32.:06:37.

for hospitals in Leeds. One hospital chief executive has paid

:06:37.:06:42.

tribute to him. We have been very sad to hear about his death, and

:06:42.:06:47.

our sympathy is with his wife and family. He has been a great

:06:47.:06:52.

supporter over the years and he helped us with charity appeals,

:06:52.:06:58.

raising 1.5 million which helped us to refurbish the hospice. I have

:06:58.:07:03.

been told that a private funeral is to be held at a later date. Details

:07:03.:07:08.

should be announced tomorrow. A thanksgiving service and

:07:08.:07:12.

celebration of lot here with's life will be held at a later date. A

:07:12.:07:17.

book of condolence will be opened at Harewood House, and at All

:07:17.:07:27.
:07:27.:07:30.

Saints Church, here on the state. Also in tonight's programme: A

:07:30.:07:34.

man's been killed and a three year- old girl is in a critical condition

:07:34.:07:38.

this evening after being struck by a train in South Yorkshire. The

:07:38.:07:40.

accident happened between Adwick and Bentley. Train services were

:07:40.:07:43.

halted while the young girl was airlifted to Sheffield Children's

:07:43.:07:46.

Hospital and an investigation is being carried out. Our reporter Tom

:07:46.:07:50.

Ingall is at the scene. What do we know? I am here at the scene, on

:07:50.:07:54.

the East Coast main line between Doncaster and Leeds. This section

:07:54.:07:59.

was closed this afternoon because of a terrible accent that left a

:07:59.:08:03.

man dead and at the inaugural in critical condition in hospital, and

:08:03.:08:09.

halted train services. A passenger train stands stationary in the sun.

:08:09.:08:13.

This service running between London and Leeds struck the 28-year-old

:08:13.:08:17.

man and three-year-old girl, on a stretch of the East Coast Main Line

:08:17.:08:21.

north of Bentley station. What speed would the train have been

:08:21.:08:26.

going at? It would be a line speed, which is anything up to 100 miles

:08:26.:08:32.

an hour. Quite a speed, as you can imagine. This section of the East

:08:32.:08:36.

Coast Main Line has many access points were cars and pedestrians

:08:36.:08:41.

can get across. British Transport police say that the police were the

:08:41.:08:46.

man and a little girl were it was not a crossing. The man was

:08:46.:08:50.

pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl was airlifted to a

:08:50.:08:55.

children's hospital in Sheffield. The train was finally amount --

:08:55.:09:00.

allowed to move some hours later. Passengers were kept up to date by

:09:00.:09:05.

staff, but had to remain on board throughout, eventually reaching

:09:05.:09:09.

Leeds and Wakefield late in the afternoon. South Yorkshire police

:09:09.:09:13.

have joined the British Transport colleagues to search the stretch of

:09:13.:09:17.

line. The man is, local area, but his relationship with the three-

:09:17.:09:24.

year-old girl is not clear. The key question remains, what brought them

:09:24.:09:27.

to one of the faster stretches of railway line in the county, with

:09:27.:09:33.

such terrible consequences? Scene- of-crime officers have cleared the

:09:33.:09:37.

tax and the railway has reopened, so services are getting back to

:09:37.:09:43.

normal, but there will still be some disruption. The news is that

:09:43.:09:47.

the three-year-old girl is in a critical but stable condition in

:09:47.:09:56.

hospital in Sheffield. A new hard- hitting report out today says

:09:56.:09:59.

children with special needs have been failed by local authorities in

:09:59.:10:02.

Leeds. The Local Government Ombudsman has found three cases of

:10:02.:10:05.

serious shortcomings in Leeds Council's education and care

:10:05.:10:07.

services, and has ordered compensation to be paid to three

:10:07.:10:11.

families. Danni Hewson reports. The ombudsman highlighted three

:10:11.:10:14.

incidence is where children with learning difficulties were

:10:14.:10:18.

neglected. Assiduously disabled girl was left unable to communicate

:10:18.:10:21.

because the people caring for how did not know sign language. On

:10:21.:10:27.

another occasion there was might not enough staff to help to use the

:10:27.:10:32.

toilet, so she ended up with blisters and urine infections. The

:10:32.:10:36.

report pulls no punches. It talks of serious and extensive failures,

:10:37.:10:44.

substantial injustice or vulnerable children, and it describes this as

:10:44.:10:50.

inexplicable and inexcusable. feelings have been very serious for

:10:50.:10:53.

the children involved and indicated quite serious problems within the

:10:53.:10:58.

council. The authority accepts that it failed in this case but says

:10:58.:11:03.

changes have already been made. This February, I was allowed access

:11:03.:11:05.

to the children's services department to make a new team who

:11:06.:11:11.

had been rated "excellent" during a spot inspection by Ofsted. The

:11:11.:11:15.

council is keen not to play down the seriousness of the past

:11:15.:11:19.

incidents and has the compensation to the parents who cleaned -- who

:11:19.:11:23.

complained. A statement today said that no amount of compensation or

:11:23.:11:33.

apology could sufficiently make up for what had happened. Another

:11:33.:11:38.

family member said that the council should have listened to the parents

:11:38.:11:46.

and what happened could have been avoided. Earlier the Director of

:11:46.:11:49.

Childrens Services for Leeds, Nigel Richardson, reacted to these

:11:49.:11:53.

serious criticisms. It is very serious. We treated very seriously.

:11:53.:11:58.

We fully accept the findings of the ombudsman. We would like to

:11:58.:12:04.

formally apologised to the young people involved in what was clearly

:12:04.:12:09.

and an appropriate level of service. Why did it happen? That is a very

:12:09.:12:14.

good question. It should not have happened. Absolutely, it should not

:12:14.:12:17.

have happened, and I can say that with confidence because when you

:12:17.:12:22.

are dealing with the most vulnerable children, you get a

:12:22.:12:25.

statement of special educational needs, clearly labelling what it is

:12:25.:12:30.

that you have to do with that young person to best meet their needs,

:12:30.:12:35.

and, for whatever reason, we fell to do that. It was not on your

:12:35.:12:41.

watch, you and a new broom. Yes, we have to make sure that these things

:12:42.:12:47.

go right. How can you make sure that it never happens again? There

:12:47.:12:52.

is a range of things that we can do. It is pleasing that the ombudsman

:12:52.:12:58.

is satisfied with our work so far, and she is not asking us to do any

:12:58.:13:04.

further reduce because she approves of the work we're doing it.

:13:04.:13:08.

Everybody is talking about cuts, but what we have is priority in

:13:08.:13:12.

Leeds for children's services, particularly services for the most

:13:12.:13:17.

vulnerable. We have managed to negotiate what we refer to as a

:13:17.:13:22.

larger slice of a smaller cake. And there are things that need to be

:13:22.:13:28.

put right. People are working hard to make that happen. What happens,

:13:28.:13:32.

what tends to happen, without anyone deliberately going out of

:13:32.:13:37.

their way, people forget that they are there to meet the needs a child

:13:37.:13:41.

and they think more about the process and the systems than what

:13:41.:13:45.

is right for that child, and we are building a new service around

:13:45.:13:54.

people thinking differently, They 44-year-old man has been

:13:54.:13:59.

charged with murder after a mother was found with serious stab wounds

:13:59.:14:03.

in Sheffield. Dawn Backhouse was discovered at her house and died on

:14:03.:14:07.

the way to hospital. Mark Hatter Appeared before City magistrates

:14:08.:14:14.

today and was remanded in custody. For three people were charged

:14:14.:14:17.

following demonstrations by the English Defence League and Unite

:14:17.:14:23.

Against Facism in Halifax on Saturday. A 21-year-old man and 17-

:14:23.:14:26.

year-old were detained. Another person from Pontefract appeared

:14:26.:14:31.

before magistrates this morning. Care home operator Southern Cross

:14:31.:14:36.

is closing down. The company runs 62 homes in Yorkshire. The firm has

:14:37.:14:42.

been abandoned because of financial problems. It is hoped they will be

:14:42.:14:46.

transferred to new operators. A leading accountancy firm says

:14:46.:14:50.

that more than 100 big-name shops have closed in South Yorkshire

:14:50.:14:54.

since last year. PriceWaterhouseCooper predicts that

:14:54.:14:59.

retailers will struggle over the next six months. There is good news

:14:59.:15:04.

for Doncaster, it has opened 48 stores since last year.

:15:04.:15:12.

Still to come. The weather forecast. And the Great Yorkshire Show.

:15:12.:15:15.

And to we meet schoolchildren with the task of cooking for our

:15:15.:15:18.

Olympians. And a bird's eye view of the boy it

:15:27.:15:35.

Sport, and you have been at one of the greatest cricket grounds.

:15:35.:15:40.

I was surprised to be allowed up to Scarborough. It is not often I go

:15:40.:15:47.

because somebody pushes me out of the way! It was a special day for

:15:47.:15:51.

Jonny Bairstow. It has been a difficult season for Yorkshire. 21

:15:51.:15:59.

near Old Jonny Bairstow has been a highlight, though. -- 21-year-old.

:15:59.:16:03.

Today, in a match against Worcester, he was presented with his first

:16:04.:16:07.

team cap. There are special moments in a

:16:07.:16:14.

cricketer's career and this was one of them for Jonny Bairstow. He is

:16:14.:16:20.

well and truly off Yorkshire's stock. His late father also

:16:20.:16:26.

represented the county. I have come through the academy and

:16:26.:16:30.

the seconds. Being part of the first team is brilliant. To receive

:16:30.:16:39.

my team cap is a great moment for me and my family. It is great.

:16:39.:16:47.

Sometimes you have to keep secret. I am very pleased for him.

:16:47.:16:53.

grandparents are here. My mother and my dad are here as well. He did

:16:53.:16:57.

not have long to compose himself before concentrating on the game in

:16:57.:17:01.

hand. Yorkshire are second from bottom and Worcestershire a place

:17:01.:17:06.

above. All seven games are important and we need to pick up

:17:06.:17:12.

points quickly. You are emphasising every session. Do well in every

:17:12.:17:18.

session. This is what we have not a done every year. We have had good

:17:18.:17:21.

sessions, and if we get into a strong position we have to make use

:17:21.:17:30.

of it. Yorkshire needed early wickets. Ryan Sidebottom obliged.

:17:30.:17:37.

Not to be out done, Tim pressman also chipped in. There was a catch

:17:37.:17:40.

for Jonny Bairstow to take-off Richard Pyrah's bowling -- Tim

:17:40.:17:47.

Bresnan. Wickets continued to tumble on a bowler friendly pitch.

:17:48.:17:53.

It is a changed is the Yorkshire on top. We do not often see that. It

:17:53.:17:57.

is Scarborough and we expect something different at Scarborough.

:17:57.:18:02.

Yorkshire put themselves in with a chance. Can they go on and finish

:18:02.:18:07.

chance. Can they go on and finish the job? The bowlers carried on the

:18:07.:18:17.
:18:17.:18:18.

good work. Tim Bresnan Took four wickets. Andrew Gale Was unbeaten

:18:18.:18:28.
:18:28.:18:32.

In Super League Stuart Jones clinched a crucial derby for

:18:32.:18:39.

Castleford Tigers against Bradford Bulls. They got their first win in

:18:39.:18:49.

four. There was a heavy defeat against Catalan Dragons. You can

:18:49.:18:54.

catch the highlights on the Super League Show on the BBC iPlayer now.

:18:54.:18:59.

I am looking forward to this. You look relaxed considering you have

:18:59.:19:09.

been swimming this weekend. Open-water swimming. The first ever

:19:09.:19:16.

Jane Tomlinson Swim For All. It was a bad Pugney's. We can look at it -

:19:16.:19:24.

- at Pugney's. I swam or wither Mike Tomlinson. That is asked

finishing hour 500 metres -- with Mike Tomlinson. He was very quiet

:19:31.:19:35.

all the way round. He is not the greatest swimmer, by his own

:19:35.:19:42.

admission. Apparently, next year we are doing 1500 metres. Having

:19:42.:19:48.

looked at that, it is big. It goes right the way around the lake. 500

:19:48.:19:56.

people took part. It was fantastic. It was a little bit cold. It is

:19:56.:20:04.

tricky to deal with the weeds. I could cope with 500 metres. 1500

:20:04.:20:09.

metres has me worried. It was fantastic. Many inspirational

:20:09.:20:16.

stories. A great addition to their events. And that is three times I

:20:16.:20:23.

have put on a wet suit for Look North this year alone.

:20:23.:20:33.
:20:33.:20:34.

I am not saying anything. A primary school from Holmfirth is through to

:20:34.:20:38.

the last part of the competition to design a meal to be served at the

:20:38.:20:44.

Olympic village. Helme Primary designed their dish based on the

They have tasted new food. They have been inspired and enjoyed

Good luck tomorrow. Faure decade. Harry Potter has enthralled

:22:49.:22:52.

audiences worldwide. With the final film due for release, Pottermania

:22:53.:22:58.

has swept across the country. Throughout North Yorkshire they

:22:58.:23:05.

have come with a tribute to the boy wizard.

:23:05.:23:10.

When the final film is released it will mark the end of the most

:23:10.:23:18.

successful movie franchise the world has seen. As excitement pills,

a tourist attraction close to York has come up with a unique way to

:23:21.:23:31.
