Good evening. You are watching Look North.

:00:06.:00:10.

Tonight, china accuses Yorkshire. The most successful country at the

:00:10.:00:16.

last Olympics picks at Leeds as its base for London 2012.

:00:16.:00:21.

Also, containing the trouble. What stopped a disorder like this

:00:21.:00:25.

turning into full-scale riot seen elsewhere in Britain.

:00:25.:00:28.

And join me here at the Huddersfield food and drink

:00:28.:00:33.

Festival where I will be trying spicy ice-cream and three T cheese.

:00:33.:00:38.

And join me for the weather. We have seen cloudy skies and it will

:00:38.:00:48.
:00:48.:00:53.

I think that is probably my favourite flag of all and China,

:00:53.:00:58.

the biggest medal winners at the last Olympic Games, have chosen and

:00:58.:01:03.

Leeds as their base for London 2012. Several other countries have played

:01:03.:01:10.

-- made plans to choose Yorkshire. Sheffield will host the United

:01:10.:01:15.

States divers. York will have comes for guinea be Sir and Gambia. The

:01:15.:01:19.

entire Serbian Olympic team will be split between Leeds and Sheffield.

:01:19.:01:24.

The Dutch swimming team will use leads. We already knew that the

:01:24.:01:27.

Chinese track and field team will be in Leeds, but it has been

:01:27.:01:37.
:01:37.:01:44.

announced that their entire squad This is how they sold leads to the

:01:45.:01:52.

Chinese. And it seems to have done the trick. I am very proud of our

:01:52.:01:58.

links with China. At a ceremony today, it was announced that 300

:01:58.:02:02.

athletes and staff will be based in and around Leeds as they prepare

:02:02.:02:07.

for London 2012. After the handshakes came the ping-

:02:07.:02:10.

pong. The head of Leeds City Council was more than holding his

:02:10.:02:16.

own. China not only hosted the last Olympics, but finished top of the

:02:16.:02:20.

medal table. They were not short of offers from hosts, but one place

:02:20.:02:26.

had the edge. Yorkshire people, these people have a positive

:02:26.:02:34.

attitude and a warm personality and also are supportive. You will see

:02:34.:02:38.

action from the city council. Sports Centre at the University

:02:38.:02:44.

will host table-tennis, fencing and type 1 Dekker competitors and four

:02:44.:02:49.

other teams will warm up for the Games in Yorkshire. Yorkshire has

:02:49.:02:54.

more training team signed up than London. 15 months ago we were at

:02:54.:02:57.

the bottom of the national league table and now we are the top. We

:02:57.:03:01.

are thrilled about that and it reflects the hard work we have put

:03:01.:03:05.

in. For children like the ones taking part in this summer camp,

:03:05.:03:09.

the deal with China means the chance to watch some of the best

:03:09.:03:13.

athletes prepare for the biggest competition in the world.

:03:13.:03:19.

I would love to learn how to play table tennis better. The same,

:03:19.:03:23.

really. I want to know how to play table tennis better because I am

:03:23.:03:31.

More teams and training camps will be announced in the coming weeks.

:03:31.:03:41.
:03:41.:03:43.

It does not end here, for With this in the studio our

:03:43.:03:48.

councillor Keith Wake field and Yang Shande, a performance director

:03:48.:03:55.

from the Olympic Committee. Mr Yang, why did you choose Leeds?

:03:55.:04:05.
:04:05.:04:07.

I think you must think the approach training, you must have the aim.

:04:07.:04:17.
:04:17.:04:19.

Pro training you must have a good sports facility. It is not very

:04:19.:04:25.

easy fought 200, 300 athletes together and suitable facilities.

:04:25.:04:32.

From the last year, we had an inspection from different areas and

:04:32.:04:40.

countries including the UK and some European countries. At the least,

:04:40.:04:45.

we think that Leeds is the best choice. We congratulate you on your

:04:45.:04:50.

choice and we agree that Yorkshire is the best. I hope I will welcome

:04:50.:04:57.

has been very warm. Yes. From the last time we inspected Leeds and

:04:57.:05:04.

Yorkshire and also this time we came here to make the decision, we

:05:04.:05:11.

got some very welcome. The council member has come here to welcome us.

:05:11.:05:19.

We went to the Leeds University so we have a special children wearing

:05:20.:05:28.

the red T-shirt to show a welcome to the China team here. Last time

:05:28.:05:35.

they had special students also wear the red T-shirt to show a welcome.

:05:35.:05:41.

Keith, has it cost us any money and will it benefit the local economy?

:05:41.:05:46.

It will gain in terms of hosting a team as big as China which is

:05:46.:05:50.

probably one of the most exciting stories in our history of the sport.

:05:50.:05:57.

What you get from it is stronger commercial and cultural links. We

:05:57.:06:00.

should not forget this is about inspiring young children and this

:06:00.:06:06.

is a massive boost. Can I just say, Keith you need to brush up on your

:06:06.:06:10.

table tennis. Mr Yang is a former high jumper so we will put him to

:06:10.:06:15.

the test. The next time you are here, we will also wear the red T-

:06:15.:06:20.

shirts. Welcome to Yorkshire. you.

:06:20.:06:25.

Some sad news now, at champion cyclist Ray Eden died when he

:06:25.:06:30.

stepped in to stop a couple who were fighting outside his home. He

:06:30.:06:34.

stepped in, but was then punched once and he smashed his head on the

:06:34.:06:40.

ground and died three days later. Today his attacker, Luke Jolly,

:06:40.:06:45.

were sentenced to four years and nine months. Ray's widow has spoken

:06:45.:06:50.

exclusively to our Correspondent. I just wanted him to look me in the

:06:50.:06:56.

face and realise what he has done and how he devastated the family.

:06:56.:07:01.

Ray and Gayle were happily married for 14 years, but Ray was too

:07:01.:07:07.

tragically lose his life at the age of 42. It was breakfast time in

:07:07.:07:12.

this suburban Doncaster on 18th March. Ray Eden witnessed his

:07:12.:07:18.

neighbour, Luke Jolly, having a row with his girlfriend. Mr Eden tried

:07:18.:07:22.

to intervene and Luke Jolly punched him to the ground where he hit his

:07:22.:07:29.

head. He died from his injuries in hospital three days later.

:07:29.:07:33.

Widow Gale was in court today with family and friends to see Luke

:07:33.:07:38.

Jolly showing no remorse for what he had done. Luke Jolly was jailed

:07:38.:07:42.

for four years and nine months. has shown no remorse all the way

:07:42.:07:52.
:07:52.:07:52.

through. I know they tried to make out that he went back to help my

:07:52.:07:57.

husband, he actually went back shook him and dropped him again. He

:07:57.:08:02.

is a coward. You would not do that to another human being, I would not

:08:02.:08:08.

do it to a dog or anybody. He is a coward. To lie about what happened

:08:08.:08:12.

and say it was self-defence is another way of showing he is a

:08:12.:08:16.

coward. He can't take responsibility for his own actions.

:08:16.:08:22.

It has left a huge hole, it really has. Nothing will replace that huge

:08:22.:08:27.

hold and I just live day-to-day trying to get by a and I have the

:08:27.:08:33.

happy memories, the good memories. He would stop and help anybody and

:08:33.:08:39.

unfortunately this time he made a decision that ended his life.

:08:39.:08:43.

Eden's memory of her love snatched away.

:08:43.:08:51.

Later on tonight's Look North, defying his doctors, meet Oscar -

:08:51.:08:57.

that toddler defying expectations that he would never see or hear.

:08:57.:09:01.

Today police released CCTV images of disturbances which happened in

:09:01.:09:06.

Leeds earlier this week. In total, 28 arrests have now been made

:09:06.:09:11.

across Yorkshire. Despite the tension, our towns and

:09:11.:09:15.

cities have experience fewer problems than elsewhere. As the

:09:15.:09:19.

government seeks explanations, should they looked to Yorkshire far

:09:19.:09:26.

answers? Captured on CCTV cameras moments

:09:26.:09:31.

this week when Chapeltown could have stepped back to the 1980s. An

:09:31.:09:35.

area with a troubled past that spent 30 years trying to shed that

:09:35.:09:41.

reputation. Two shootings between youth's led to a tense few night.

:09:41.:09:47.

This mask was attacked with stones and today at prayers, they asked

:09:47.:09:53.

for continuing community harmony. When somebody argues with you, when

:09:53.:10:03.
:10:03.:10:06.

somebody disputes with you, tell These were the terrifying scenes

:10:06.:10:10.

from the Chapeltown riots of 1971. This time similar scenes were

:10:11.:10:17.

prevented. We are not completely out of the woods yet. At. I was

:10:17.:10:22.

thinking things may spiral out of control. I think it is due to the

:10:22.:10:26.

hard work we have put in with the community and the understanding

:10:26.:10:31.

that people have with the community. They have come together to send a

:10:31.:10:36.

positive signal out that this is not the way forward. As London was

:10:36.:10:39.

being mooted, adults in Chapeltown took to the streets to keep things

:10:39.:10:44.

calm. I would like to give a real compliment to the people working

:10:44.:10:49.

hard as Community mediators. They presented themselves and we have an

:10:49.:10:52.

ongoing relationship with them and they have been on the streets

:10:52.:10:58.

working as hard as we have. What do we want, peace. When do we want it,

:10:58.:11:06.

now. We put together a peace to the jaw talking to local people.

:11:06.:11:11.

Working with the community to work pass this. I think it is a

:11:11.:11:15.

community spirit. We had a peace march and people came out together.

:11:16.:11:21.

I think it is a rallying together on wanting to keep our community

:11:21.:11:26.

close-knit. Today young people in Chapeltown said the rivalries

:11:27.:11:31.

between groups remained. But they were proud of how much had been

:11:31.:11:38.

achieve this week. Thank you very much. About an hour

:11:38.:11:42.

ago I managed to catch up with the Deputy Prime Minister who had been

:11:42.:11:47.

in South Yorkshire. I asked him, was he not proud that Yorkshire had

:11:47.:11:52.

avoided full-scale rioting? I think it is a real tribute to the

:11:52.:11:56.

communities of Yorkshire. I have just spent some time with youth

:11:56.:11:59.

leaders and activists here in Sheffield and they are rightly so

:12:00.:12:04.

proud of the fact that when we were witnessing all of those horrific

:12:04.:12:09.

scenes in other cities and towns across the country, here in

:12:09.:12:14.

Sheffield young people were talking to each other and using the social

:12:14.:12:19.

media to say to each other, we are not going to let this happen. I

:12:19.:12:23.

think it is a great tribute. Although there has been trouble in

:12:23.:12:28.

Chapeltown, it is on a much smaller scale. Although injuries were

:12:28.:12:35.

serious. In Bradford, virtually nothing, thank goodness. Others

:12:35.:12:40.

saying community leaders came on to look north for weeks ago saying a

:12:40.:12:43.

word they are doing it is threatened by the cuts. What would

:12:43.:12:50.

you say to them? I accept there is an ongoing debate about how we make

:12:50.:12:53.

savings and make sure the most vulnerable are not

:12:53.:12:58.

disproportionately affected by those. Unfortunately, to get this

:12:58.:13:02.

thing as the country, we are all going to have to tighten our belts.

:13:02.:13:07.

Of course that means local authorities. But community cohesion,

:13:07.:13:11.

those people going out on the street saying please do not join in,

:13:11.:13:19.

surely that is vital to safeguard the communities. Of course.

:13:19.:13:23.

Everything plays its part. I do not think we should assume that

:13:23.:13:27.

communities can only hang together if people in Whitehall right checks

:13:27.:13:31.

out for them, it is more complicated. That community spirit

:13:31.:13:36.

is something which is not just about grants from central

:13:36.:13:40.

government, but yes, I accept there are controversy is about where

:13:40.:13:45.

savings need to be made. Not least in policing, but what I think the

:13:45.:13:51.

context is, it will be a real disservice to young people of the

:13:51.:13:56.

future if we do not managed to wipe the slate clean and pile up more

:13:56.:14:01.

debt that they will eventually have to pay themselves. Thank you very

:14:01.:14:11.

much for taking the time to talk to Five of the 28 arrests were made in

:14:11.:14:16.

North Yorkshire. A 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old

:14:16.:14:21.

man were arrested in Thirsk for conspiracy to commit violent

:14:21.:14:25.

disorder and in York two 18-year- old men were arrested for

:14:25.:14:30.

conspiracy to commit burglary. A man from Scarborough was arrested

:14:30.:14:34.

and later released. The Archbishop of York has said

:14:34.:14:39.

that Britain has become a selfish, me first society.

:14:39.:14:45.

Dr John Sentamu says he is shocked and appalled by the looters' vile

:14:45.:14:49.

and evil acts. The archbishop said he would take

:14:49.:14:53.

matters into his own hands if somebody broke into his home.

:14:53.:14:58.

If somebody tried to attack my family in my house, that is not a

:14:58.:15:05.

vigilante action, it is self- defence in defending your property.

:15:05.:15:12.

As far as I am concerned, should you turn up in my house, I have a

:15:12.:15:17.

cricket bat. I would hate you pretty hard.

:15:17.:15:27.

-- hit you. A toddler from has been -- who was

:15:27.:15:36.

told he would never have seen or here has defied doctors. -- he

:15:36.:15:46.
:15:46.:15:46.

would never see or hear. Oscar, can we have your left hand?

:15:46.:15:56.
:15:56.:15:57.

Good boy. Where is your hair? Two-year-old Oscar amazes everybody.

:15:57.:16:03.

He has cerebral palsy after being starved of oxygen as a baby.

:16:03.:16:08.

He has so past what the professionals said Oscar would do.

:16:08.:16:18.
:16:18.:16:20.

-- he has surpassed. Even as a baby Oscar was determined.

:16:20.:16:24.

Doctors said he would never see or hear and would always have to eat

:16:24.:16:32.

through a tube but he proved them wrong. This centre in London looks

:16:32.:16:37.

at speech and movement and in one visit Moscow has made great

:16:37.:16:45.

progress. -- Oscar has.

:16:45.:16:50.

We use communication picture cards to help him with his speech and

:16:50.:16:57.

language. But the therapy costs thousands of

:16:57.:17:02.

pounds a visit so every weekend family and friends worked

:17:02.:17:07.

tirelessly to write -- raise the funds.

:17:07.:17:12.

We have kept a log overs things we have done Foskett so he can look

:17:12.:17:22.
:17:22.:17:23.

back on it and say, this is what we did. -- done for Oscar. He is a

:17:23.:17:28.

special little boy for us. Oscar beat the odds every day and

:17:28.:17:35.

with more support he might just be able to say thank you himself.

:17:35.:17:40.

I am sure you would expect us to keep you posted about his progress,

:17:40.:17:45.

and we will. York City target a return to the

:17:45.:17:50.

Football League as the new season gets under way.

:17:50.:17:56.

And we will be live as Yorkshire's best food and drink producers offer

:17:56.:18:03.

something for the weekend. A new charity event in memory of

:18:03.:18:08.

Jane Tomlinson really seems to have captured the public imagination,

:18:08.:18:15.

just as she did. Walk for All this weekend in Settle is a sell-out.

:18:15.:18:22.

Hotels and B&Bs are sold out. But if you want to get involved you

:18:22.:18:25.

still can. Settle is gearing up for action and

:18:25.:18:30.

the reason is Walk for All, this weekend's walking Festival in

:18:30.:18:34.

memory of Jane Tomlinson will stop places on the walk off fully booked

:18:34.:18:40.

in what has become a sell-out event. There has been really good interest

:18:40.:18:45.

in the event. One of the reasons we have chosen deep roots is that most

:18:45.:18:54.

of them are surfaced. -- chose and it routes.

:18:54.:19:01.

Guest houses and hotels are fully booked within a ten-mile radius.

:19:01.:19:05.

A lot of local people have volunteered to do the registration

:19:05.:19:10.

in the morning, volunteer as marshals. In the end that is really

:19:10.:19:15.

important. Everybody is really pleased about it and I think they

:19:15.:19:20.

will do it next year as well. Surrounding towns and villages are

:19:20.:19:24.

offering accommodation. We will try to find do something

:19:24.:19:27.

before you come. It is most unlikely you will find something in

:19:27.:19:31.

Settle but you might something further rout.

:19:31.:19:38.

Those taking part will experienced some of Yorkshire's most at

:19:38.:19:46.

stunning landscape. -- will experience a.

:19:47.:19:51.

It has been a busy weekend. Simon Dyson's season is going from

:19:51.:19:56.

strength to strength. After the first-round stage of the USPGA he

:19:56.:20:00.

was the best-placed British player. Not quite so good in the second

:20:00.:20:04.

round, two over par, but time to recover.

:20:04.:20:08.

In football, Sheffield Wednesday last night became the 5th Yorkshire

:20:08.:20:13.

team to reach the FA Cup second round. It was a bit of a slog, 0-0

:20:13.:20:18.

at Hillsborough after 90 minutes but when stay held on to win the

:20:18.:20:23.

penalty shoot-out. This was the one that sealed it for James O'Connor

:20:23.:20:28.

and it was well worth the effort for Wednesday. Their reward in the

:20:28.:20:38.
:20:38.:20:39.

next round is a trip to Blackburn rap -- Blackburn Rovers. All of

:20:39.:20:43.

those matches are to be played the week after next.

:20:43.:20:46.

In the build up to the weekend, everybody might be talking about

:20:46.:20:51.

the Premier League, but it is also the first weekend of the new season

:20:51.:20:57.

outside the Football League. In the Blue Square Bet Premier, that means

:20:57.:21:01.

that York City will relaunch their campaign for a return to the

:21:01.:21:07.

Football League, and there are grounds optimism.

:21:08.:21:12.

I think it will be a good season because we have had a good start.

:21:12.:21:18.

We have a good chance of getting to the top of the League.

:21:18.:21:22.

The thread of optimism pervades all generations around here but one of

:21:22.:21:27.

the things that sets York City a part is that most of their rob come

:21:27.:21:32.

in opponents have branded them promotion candidates as well.

:21:32.:21:36.

their upcoming opponents. Maybe it is the care of that Gary Mills has

:21:36.:21:46.
:21:46.:21:47.

taken to prepare for his first season start as possible stopped --

:21:47.:21:57.
:21:57.:21:58.

ASDA boss. I hope we can do it. City start

:21:58.:22:05.

with a trip to Ebbsfleet. The training ground was baptised by Sir

:22:05.:22:10.

Alex himself. It has been a long time waiting for some of the Fergie

:22:10.:22:15.

magic to rub off on New York's City. But maybe the point is that Gary

:22:15.:22:23.

Mills goes about doing things his own way.

:22:23.:22:28.

The League club that is not at the moment has to turn into League club.

:22:28.:22:33.

Never mind what has gone on before, and that is why York City could be

:22:33.:22:43.

in for a memorable 2011-2012. Good luck to York City and well

:22:43.:22:46.

done to Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan, who got 50 with the bat today for

:22:47.:22:55.

England, helping Alastair Cook made his 294 against India. -- mate his

:22:55.:23:05.
:23:05.:23:05.

294. Pass make. At the Huddersfield Food and Drink

:23:05.:23:10.

Festival you can sing and dance while offering at some of

:23:10.:23:18.

Yorkshire's best offerings. People in Huddersfield are coming

:23:18.:23:24.

together to eat and drink, a really positive start to the weekend. We

:23:24.:23:29.

have Thai food, Mexican food, a lot of Yorkshire produce and I think I

:23:29.:23:38.

am about to try some spicy ice- cream. What do you have for me?

:23:38.:23:46.

Some great rhubarb cheese, which is known -- which is from Wakefield,

:23:46.:23:53.

known as the rhubarb Triangle. Then you have some delightful ice-cream,

:23:53.:24:03.

dandelion and burdock. It has a really strong taste. You must try

:24:03.:24:13.
:24:13.:24:20.

this one. This is my favourite. Sealey jam ice-cream. -- chilly

:24:20.:24:26.

obviously you like Derry, but what is the best thing about the

:24:26.:24:35.

festival? -- dairy. It is great representation for Yorkshire and

:24:35.:24:42.

the do have -- the diverse cultures of the food. But visitors are here

:24:42.:24:51.
