Hello and welcome to Wednesday's Look North. | :00:01. | :00:04.
On the first day of the world- famous Ebor meeting, a sport | :00:04. | :00:10.
approaching crisis. Why the going is not so good for the horse racing | :00:10. | :00:16.
industry in Yorkshire. Also on Look North: He says he's | :00:16. | :00:18.
the victim of Facebook thugs - the street entertainer who's installing | :00:18. | :00:22.
a camera in his hat after being pushed off his bike in York city | :00:22. | :00:26.
centre. And a return to the good old days | :00:26. | :00:34.
as the City Varieties is restored to its former glory. | :00:34. | :00:39.
And detest being a lovely day to day. We saw plenty of sunshine. | :00:39. | :00:47.
Willett be the same tomorrow? I will have the full forecast later. | :00:47. | :00:55.
-- will it be the same tomorrow? Good evening. | :00:55. | :00:57.
First tonight, the decline in the horse racing industry is beginning | :00:57. | :01:01.
to bite in Yorkshire, and it could be getting worse. Today is one of | :01:01. | :01:04.
the highlights of the racing calendar - the first day of the | :01:04. | :01:07.
world-famous Ebor meeting in York. It's part of an industry worth 228 | :01:07. | :01:16.
million to the region's economy each year. But behind the glitz and | :01:16. | :01:20.
glamour, all is not well. Across the country, there are now 1,228 | :01:21. | :01:28.
fewer horses in training than there were three years ago. That's a fall | :01:28. | :01:36.
of 7.7%. And there are now 40 fewer trainers - a drop of 6.6%. And here | :01:36. | :01:39.
in Yorkshire - one of the traditional bastions of the sport - | :01:39. | :01:43.
there are worrying signs that it could be falling on hard times. | :01:43. | :01:51.
Danny Carpenter has been investigating. | :01:51. | :01:55.
Horseracing maybe a bit of a gamble, but in training nothing is left to | :01:55. | :02:00.
chance. They even practise the start. There are 50 horses in | :02:00. | :02:04.
training at this yard near Tadcaster. Tom Tate has been here | :02:04. | :02:08.
20 years. He has never seen such a decline. We noticed a couple of | :02:08. | :02:13.
years ago that the fringe players were dropping out and then last | :02:13. | :02:18.
year, we noticed some of the more regular people were just cutting | :02:18. | :02:23.
back. And this year, we noticed that some real stalwarts, you know, | :02:23. | :02:29.
some people who have had five to 10 horses in training, are cutting | :02:29. | :02:35.
back. We think it will get worse next year. Fewer horses means fewer | :02:35. | :02:39.
jobs. Grooms, stable lads and lasses, even jockeys like Andrea | :02:39. | :02:43.
Mullen, and fewer horses means fewer rights and the prize-money | :02:43. | :02:50.
has been cut, too. There are lads getting out of the game. I think it | :02:50. | :02:53.
is the only sport in the last five or six years that has gone | :02:53. | :02:58.
backwards. All the other sports are advancing forwards and we are | :02:58. | :03:02.
taking a step backwards, so it could get bad in the next two or | :03:02. | :03:06.
three years if it doesn't sort itself out. It is not just our | :03:06. | :03:10.
shrinking economy that is affecting this industry but economies on the | :03:10. | :03:15.
other side of the world. In China, they are opening eight new corset - | :03:15. | :03:18.
- racecourses and some trainers are already talking about moving over | :03:18. | :03:22.
there and taking their whole business with them. Most trainers | :03:22. | :03:26.
by horses in the autumn hoping to find owners to take them on. This | :03:26. | :03:31.
year, many of them still have that stock. It is a loss they will carry | :03:31. | :03:35.
into next year, and of the year when they expect slowdown and | :03:35. | :03:41.
decline. They look magnificent, don't they? | :03:41. | :03:44.
The British Horseracing Authority said today it's doing all it can to | :03:44. | :03:47.
support the industry in Yorkshire by attracting new people into the | :03:47. | :03:49.
sport and improving funding. Charlotte Leeming caught up with | :03:49. | :03:58.
its acting chief executive at York Races a little earlier today. | :03:58. | :04:04.
What a terrific day for the start of the Ebor Festival and over the | :04:04. | :04:08.
next four days around 90,000 people will be visiting York. You would | :04:08. | :04:13.
never think we were living in a bad economic climate. People are | :04:13. | :04:17.
drinking champagne and in their fancy clothes. But could all that | :04:17. | :04:22.
the Sky's the back that this is an industry that is struggling? Chris | :04:22. | :04:28.
banned from the British Horseracing Authority is here. This is an | :04:28. | :04:32.
accusation that this sport has not moved on like cricket and football | :04:32. | :04:36.
and is struggling at the moment. don't think that is right at all. | :04:36. | :04:41.
This is the first day of the Ebor Festival. There will be over 80,000 | :04:41. | :04:45.
people across the course of the week. Racing is taking all the | :04:45. | :04:50.
steps it can to attract new people. Prize-money is falling, but that is | :04:50. | :04:54.
mainly due to an issue we have with the way the book makers to take | :04:54. | :04:59.
bets on the sport Fund and give money back to the sport. We have | :04:59. | :05:02.
huge issues of leakage and loopholes in the Horseracing | :05:02. | :05:08.
betting levy. That has got worse in the last four years and will have a | :05:08. | :05:12.
significant impact across the sport. At meetings like this, which are | :05:12. | :05:17.
very glamorous and affluent, it is always very busy. But when we look | :05:17. | :05:20.
behind the scenes at trainers and stable hands, does those people who | :05:20. | :05:27.
are losing their jobs. If you go back to 2008, we had 600 licensed | :05:27. | :05:34.
trainers across the country. That has dropped by about 6%. Over 100 | :05:34. | :05:39.
in the Yorkshire region. They are small and medium-sized businesses | :05:39. | :05:43.
and are affected by the economy like everything else. If we can | :05:43. | :05:46.
close the loopholes and get the bookmakers funding the sport | :05:46. | :05:50.
properly, that will protect those jobs and businesses. So you're not | :05:50. | :05:54.
worried that there will be stables across Yorkshire lying NT in the | :05:54. | :05:59.
future? As I've said, we have seen a drop in numbers, partly due to | :05:59. | :06:05.
the economic downturn, but also the significant funding problem we have. | :06:05. | :06:08.
The governments have recognised that and are working to close those | :06:08. | :06:12.
loopholes and get funding flowing back into the sport from bookmakers. | :06:12. | :06:18.
Thank you for joining us. Any concerns were not put any dampener | :06:18. | :06:21.
on things here in York today, I'm sure. | :06:21. | :06:24.
Later on Look North: The appliance of science - Yorkshire students at | :06:24. | :06:29.
the forefront of advances in keyhole surgery. | :06:29. | :06:32.
Bad news now for rail commuters. TransPennine Express, the company | :06:32. | :06:34.
that runs the trains between York, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester | :06:34. | :06:37.
Airport and Liverpool, says it's facing two days of strike action | :06:37. | :06:41.
next week. Drivers and guards won't be working next Wednesday and | :06:41. | :06:46.
Friday. The company says it hopes to run some trains but admits | :06:46. | :06:48.
there's likely to be disruption. Our correspondent Alan Whitehouse | :06:48. | :06:56.
is with us now. What is all this about? It is a good old-fashioned | :06:56. | :07:04.
pay row. They offered 2.2% to drivers and guards and that is all | :07:04. | :07:07.
that can be afforded. If you average out all the pay increases | :07:07. | :07:11.
that everybody in the country are getting, 2.2% is the national | :07:12. | :07:15.
average. The union are saying it is not nearly enough because inflation | :07:15. | :07:22.
is running at 4.5 to 5% depending on how you measure it. They think | :07:22. | :07:26.
they are taking a real-terms pay cut. What effect is this likely to | :07:26. | :07:30.
have one passengers? I think the effects will be significant the | :07:30. | :07:34.
stock TransPennine Express say they will run what ever trained as they | :07:34. | :07:42.
can. They will get managers and supervisors in who are qualified. | :07:42. | :07:47.
There are lots of commuters. The second strike day on 26th August is | :07:47. | :07:52.
the start of the bank holiday. There is the Leeds Festival and the | :07:52. | :07:55.
pride festival, both events which tend to bring in a lot of rail | :07:56. | :07:59.
travellers. What is the advice to those who think they may be | :07:59. | :08:04.
affected? Check before you travel. Give TransPennine Express a call | :08:04. | :08:08.
and ensure that trains are running or make other plans. Men are thanks | :08:08. | :08:14.
for joining us. -- Many thanks. | :08:14. | :08:17.
More news now, and the Government has decided to appeal against a | :08:17. | :08:19.
decision which ordered it to release documents about the | :08:19. | :08:22.
Hillsborough disaster. 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death during | :08:22. | :08:25.
an FA Cup semi-final there in 1989. But many details about the tragedy | :08:25. | :08:29.
have never been released. Last month, the Information Commissioner | :08:29. | :08:31.
ordered the Government to publish documents revealing discussions | :08:31. | :08:37.
involving Margaret Thatcher and her Cabinet following the disaster. | :08:37. | :08:39.
A second man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Gavin | :08:39. | :08:44.
Clarke in Leeds. Mr Clarke was shot in Chapeltown last week and died in | :08:44. | :08:47.
hospital on Friday. 28-year-old Sohail Mahmood was today remanded | :08:47. | :08:57.
:08:57. | :09:05. | ||
in custody and is due to appear before the Crown Court next week. | :09:05. | :09:09.
Unemployment has fallen in Yorkshire. 20,000 fewer people were | :09:09. | :09:13.
out of work here in the three months to June. The total number of | :09:13. | :09:14.
unemployed people now stands at 233,000. | :09:14. | :09:18.
A York street performer has installed a camera in his hat in a | :09:18. | :09:21.
bid to prevent further attacks from members of the public. Purple Man - | :09:21. | :09:24.
a familiar figure in the Stonegate part of the city - was pushed off | :09:24. | :09:28.
his bicycle at the weekend and dragged to the ground by a group of | :09:28. | :09:31.
youths. He believes the attack was provoked by a message posted on the | :09:31. | :09:39.
social networking website Facebook. Peter Lugg reports. | :09:39. | :09:43.
With his Per's, his purple bike and his purple blob, Purple Man is a | :09:44. | :09:48.
popular tourist attraction in York city centre. Every summer, | :09:48. | :09:52.
thousands try and make him laugh. But he never moves. Unless he is | :09:52. | :10:02.
pushed. The Facebook page was created and was Live last week. | :10:02. | :10:06.
After that page appeared, I was receiving threats on the street, | :10:06. | :10:11.
people wanting to push me off the bike as the Facebook page incited | :10:11. | :10:15.
people to do. And then this actually happened. He says a | :10:15. | :10:19.
message has been running on Facebook urging people to use the | :10:19. | :10:25.
riots as an excuse for knocking that Purple Man in York office bite. | :10:25. | :10:29.
Now Purple man is looking to take legal action against the person who | :10:29. | :10:34.
posted it. Saturday was the first time in 10 years that Purple Man | :10:34. | :10:39.
has felt threatened. But now he has a to install extra security for his | :10:39. | :10:43.
personal protection. I have a video camera in my head which can be | :10:43. | :10:50.
turned on in two seconds. Today, shoppers condemned the attack. | :10:50. | :10:58.
There is no need to knock him off the bike. There is no reason. | :10:58. | :11:02.
a bad society that does that. Roald man from Yorkshire was | :11:03. | :11:06.
arrested following Saturday's incident and is now helping police | :11:06. | :11:11.
with their inquiries. -- a 43-year- old man. | :11:11. | :11:17.
My son loves the Purple Man. The kids really find it quite | :11:18. | :11:20.
extraordinary. A Yorkshire student project has won | :11:20. | :11:23.
acclaim here and in America for its potential to improve keyhole | :11:23. | :11:26.
surgery for both medics and their patients. A group of engineers from | :11:26. | :11:29.
Leeds University have devised a system which could be used in | :11:29. | :11:32.
operating theatres in the future to help surgeons with their diagnoses. | :11:32. | :11:42.
:11:42. | :11:43. | ||
We should warn you that this report does contain images of surgery. | :11:44. | :11:47.
Many operations can now be performed using keyhole surgery. | :11:47. | :11:51.
For the patient, it means less pain and scarring and quicker recovery. | :11:51. | :11:56.
Tiny cameras project images from inside the body on to a TV monitor, | :11:56. | :12:01.
which a surgeon uses to manipulate instruments from outside. But this | :12:01. | :12:07.
deprives the Surgeon of a key skill. Surgeons relied on touch and feel | :12:07. | :12:12.
to determine what's normal and what's abnormal. By differentiating | :12:12. | :12:18.
those, that helps guide us to know what we need to take out and what | :12:18. | :12:28.
we can leave behind. The resolution can be adjusted. Five final-year | :12:28. | :12:32.
engineering students rose to the challenge of restoring that hands- | :12:32. | :12:39.
on feeling. A block of silicone mimics a liver and embodied -- | :12:39. | :12:43.
embedded ball bearings a tumour. prance along the surface to measure | :12:43. | :12:50.
the forces that would be present in surgery. It does the same thing as | :12:50. | :12:54.
a physical measurement system but it allows us to do a lot of | :12:54. | :13:04.
:13:04. | :13:06. | ||
repetitions and integrate this to allow a 3D space. It would enable | :13:06. | :13:11.
the surgeon to feel abnormalities like tumours which should not be | :13:11. | :13:15.
there. It is quite a team effort to get it all to work. It is pleasing | :13:15. | :13:20.
to do something it is relevant and we hope has a future. If we can | :13:20. | :13:25.
once again feel inside the abdomen, then one would hope that that will | :13:25. | :13:30.
help us to do the surgery better and, in turn, that will have | :13:30. | :13:34.
advantages for patients. This is a first-stage project which needs | :13:34. | :13:39.
much more work before it arrives in operating theatres. But it started | :13:39. | :13:48.
in Leeds. Before 7.00: The first day of the | :13:48. | :13:52.
greatest cricket festival in the world. Harry's been to Scarborough | :13:52. | :13:59.
to take in its new look and of course the cricket. | :13:59. | :14:09.
:14:09. | :14:23. | ||
And the most famous variety theatre I used to love that programme. Let | :14:23. | :14:29.
us turn to sport. I look back at a busy night of football. It was a | :14:29. | :14:34.
night to forget for some of her teens. But if your team has the | :14:34. | :14:39.
word United, you will be smiling. If you're going to pick a moment | :14:40. | :14:43.
for your first league victory, their home derby is not a bad | :14:43. | :14:48.
choice. Inspired by a Ross McCormack's opener, region are | :14:48. | :14:58.
:14:58. | :14:58. | ||
painted rocked to a 4-1 victory over Hull. Two-1 at half-time and | :14:59. | :15:04.
they went from strength to strength adding more from Robert Snodgrass | :15:04. | :15:14.
:15:14. | :15:16. | ||
and rain on in my guess. -- Ramon Nunez in s. Another red home defeat. | :15:16. | :15:20.
Doncaster Rovers have lost three out of three in the championship, | :15:20. | :15:25.
last night by a single goal at home to Nottingham Forest. League One | :15:25. | :15:31.
was next as well - Sheffield Wednesday lost. Chesterfield lost | :15:31. | :15:37.
at home to Preston and still have not scored a BECTU this season. | :15:37. | :15:41.
Huddersfield Town are less than satisfied with their third draw | :15:41. | :15:47.
from three-game. Sheffield United are emphatically be good news. | :15:47. | :15:55.
Lying second in their table, he would not have thought it a 2-nil | :15:55. | :15:59.
down but then enter Lee Williamson who set up two and scored the | :15:59. | :16:08.
middle goal. His sizzling strike made a level. Richard Cresswell | :16:08. | :16:15.
scored the winner for 3-2 on a memorable night. There was | :16:15. | :16:18.
suspicion that Rotherham United where a good bet for this season | :16:18. | :16:24.
and a lid and bang on. A late strike subjected Bradford City to a | :16:24. | :16:33.
defeat at Accrington. Let us look at Horse racing now. | :16:33. | :16:36.
Horse racing - and the owners of one of today's winners at the Ebor | :16:36. | :16:38.
meeting in York will be celebrating, pocketing the most prize money of | :16:38. | :16:41.
the meeting. Twice Over on the near side beat stablemate Midday and | :16:41. | :16:43.
four other horses to the line to win the Juddmonte International | :16:43. | :16:46.
Stakes. It was a close finish, but means the owners of twice over pick | :16:46. | :16:56.
:16:56. | :17:02. | ||
up a winner's cheque for 700,000. That is a lot of money. Other news: | :17:02. | :17:04.
Doncaster captain Shaun Leaf has been found guilty of breaking the | :17:04. | :17:07.
rugby league betting code, and banned for 18 months. He is also | :17:07. | :17:09.
been fined 500 after being found guilty of betting on released four | :17:09. | :17:12.
rugby league matches, two of which involved his own team. The player | :17:12. | :17:14.
had been provisionally suspended in May when a tabloid newspaper | :17:14. | :17:16.
revealed he had bet 200 against Doncaster in their fourth-round | :17:16. | :17:26.
:17:26. | :17:32. | ||
Challenge Cup defeat by Wakefield. If you like your cricket, you know | :17:32. | :17:38.
where Harry is. He always describes it as the world's greatest | :17:38. | :17:42.
cricketing festival. It involves cricket and Scarborough. Today was | :17:42. | :17:46.
the first day of the Scarborough Festival with Yorkshire playing | :17:46. | :17:56.
:17:56. | :17:57. | ||
Sussex and Harry enjoyed his dream day out. | :17:57. | :18:02.
Nothing better, is there? A beautiful day and the world's | :18:02. | :18:09.
greatest cricket festival. This is what you do - you get into the | :18:09. | :18:14.
ground early to get the best seat. I had been here since 7 o'clock | :18:14. | :18:22.
this morning. This is the time the place comes alive. Lunch can be a | :18:22. | :18:30.
top-class Scarborough Fair. The pie is have just been delivered. | :18:30. | :18:40.
:18:40. | :18:41. | ||
Another two early arrivals. Delight Scarborough? Yes, definitely one of | :18:41. | :18:46.
my favourite grounds. I hope we can do this week. We're in a spot of | :18:46. | :18:52.
bother at the moment but I think we can turn around. The crowds gather. | :18:52. | :18:57.
Brian has been here for 17 years. What is it like to keep control of | :18:57. | :19:03.
this lot? It is very hard at times because you get a lot of back chat, | :19:03. | :19:09.
but I enjoy doing the job. The at his hair is wonderful. I go all | :19:09. | :19:14.
over the country but Scarborough is the best. It is different, but it | :19:14. | :19:19.
is beside the seaside so it is different. We have good food and we | :19:19. | :19:26.
meet friends. Just the atmosphere, and the nostalgia of coming to | :19:26. | :19:32.
Scarborough, it is a fabulous place. Sussex won the toss at bat. A | :19:32. | :19:37.
wonderful reception for the captain today. Everything about him is top | :19:37. | :19:47.
:19:47. | :19:48. | ||
