Welcome to Look North. Tonight, a huge blow for Yorkshire - a

:00:06.:00:08.

nationwide survey for the NHS suggests there's little support

:00:08.:00:12.

across the country for the children's heart unit to stay open.

:00:12.:00:15.

Also tonight, disruption for rail commuters - rush hour queues due to

:00:15.:00:18.

fewer trains as drivers go on strike, and more action's planned

:00:18.:00:25.

for Friday. As Anne Hathaway's panned for her

:00:25.:00:28.

Yorkshire accent in her latest film, we ask does she really sound like a

:00:28.:00:38.
:00:38.:00:38.

Tyke? Come on, it's time to go home.

:00:38.:00:48.
:00:48.:00:49.

know, we have never actually met. You know, we have.

:00:49.:00:53.

And after a mostly fine and dry day, we have got a weather warning for

:00:54.:01:00.

rain. I will be back later in the programme for the full forecast.

:01:00.:01:04.

Good evening and welcome to Look North. The campaign to keep

:01:04.:01:08.

children's heart surgery here in Yorkshire has been dealt a blow.

:01:08.:01:10.

One of the biggest surveys ever conducted for the NHS suggests

:01:10.:01:13.

there's little support elsewhere in the country for the unit in Leeds

:01:13.:01:22.

to stay open. So how close are we to a final decision?

:01:22.:01:25.

This is an issue which provokes strong feelings. Let's just remind

:01:25.:01:29.

you of where we are. At the moment there are currently 11 children's

:01:29.:01:32.

heart units across England and Wales. The proposal is to reduce

:01:32.:01:37.

that number by around half to six or seven. The campaign to keep the

:01:37.:01:40.

heart unit open has attracted a big response. Half a million people

:01:40.:01:43.

signed a petition in Yorkshire, which was sent to Downing Street,

:01:43.:01:47.

calling for the Leeds unit to stay open. No decision is expected

:01:47.:01:51.

before the end of the year. Any changes are not likely to take

:01:51.:01:58.

effect until 2013. Ian White has today's latest development.

:01:58.:02:03.

It is a dilemma that has divided the North of England. Should

:02:03.:02:07.

children have a life-saving heart surgery in Leeds, or be forced to

:02:07.:02:12.

travel to Newcastle or Liverpool instead? After the petitions came

:02:12.:02:17.

the politicians, and now the result of a major NHS questionnaire. The

:02:17.:02:21.

latest blow for Leeds comes in the form of this large document. It is

:02:21.:02:27.

a very heavy reading. 75,000 people across the UK took part in the

:02:27.:02:30.

survey. In it they were asked to choose one of four options - where

:02:30.:02:36.

would they like children's heart surgery located? Newcastle and

:02:36.:02:41.

Liverpool are appeared in three of the options, but Leeds' only

:02:42.:02:44.

appeared in the 4th option. While it got a good response in Yorkshire,

:02:44.:02:50.

Natalie, May the -- mich -- most people voted for the top two

:02:50.:02:55.

options. It is disappointing, but not surprising. We were never going

:02:55.:03:01.

to come out top because we were only in one out of four options.

:03:01.:03:05.

is exceptionally difficult to fill in. I have got a degree and I

:03:05.:03:09.

struggled. Also, it was not produced in other languages, which

:03:09.:03:14.

is an issue for many parents in this unit where 25% of parents

:03:14.:03:18.

don't have English as a first language. The campaign has been

:03:19.:03:28.
:03:29.:03:30.

hugely successful with more than 500,000 and a national survey. Half

:03:30.:03:35.

a million people signed a petition wanting to save his unit. They

:03:35.:03:39.

found it very difficult to fill in the online questionnaire. It was

:03:39.:03:43.

very confusing. Even if we had difficulty with that. I don't want

:03:43.:03:49.

this to be a Leeds - Newcastle thing. There is probably I would

:03:49.:03:53.

obviously go for Leeds because of the geography and the fact that it

:03:53.:03:57.

is a first-rate centre. Families say that despite today's

:03:57.:04:00.

developments they will fight on to keep heart surgery in Leeds until a

:04:00.:04:04.

final decision is known at the end of the deer.

:04:04.:04:06.

A little earlier I spoke to Dr Graham Stuart, a consultant

:04:06.:04:09.

cardiologist, who is advising the committee that will make the final

:04:09.:04:12.

decision about children's heart surgery across England and Wales. I

:04:12.:04:16.

put to him that the way this survey had been conducted wasn't fair to

:04:16.:04:26.
:04:26.:04:28.

Leeds. I accept that the process was not

:04:28.:04:33.

perfect. The problem in the North of England is a difficult one in

:04:33.:04:39.

that it is a big region, and the population doesn't allow for three

:04:39.:04:42.

centres to continue while at the same time each centre having

:04:42.:04:47.

sufficient numbers to provide a safe and sustainable service with a

:04:47.:04:51.

minimum of four surgeons. Therefore there has to be a cut down in

:04:51.:04:55.

centres. How that is done is an extremely difficult decision.

:04:55.:04:59.

500,000 people fear that you are about to make the wrong decision.

:04:59.:05:04.

The individual decisions are very, very difficult, not just in the

:05:04.:05:08.

north, but throughout different areas of the UK. That is why this

:05:08.:05:15.

process has taken a long time. That is why the views of all those

:05:15.:05:25.

people in Leeds he completed the survey, and also the overall 77,002

:05:25.:05:29.

completed the poll are very important. You say it is an

:05:29.:05:34.

important decision, but can you categorically assure us tonight

:05:34.:05:37.

that that decision has not been made, that the consultation is

:05:38.:05:42.

still under way? Did the best of my knowledge, that is true, and I

:05:42.:05:46.

genuinely believe it to be true, although I am not privy to the

:05:46.:05:49.

final decision. I am part of the steering group that advises

:05:49.:05:53.

decision-makers. You still seem to be hinting in some way that Leeds

:05:53.:05:59.

has to go. Leeds was part of one option out of the different options,

:05:59.:06:03.

and it was the least popular option. The reason for that was partly

:06:03.:06:08.

because of the other two units, Liverpool has a very high

:06:08.:06:13.

population density, and Newcastle provides two of the nationally

:06:13.:06:22.

designated services. So, that does not preclude Leeds surviving, but

:06:22.:06:28.

it does mean that a different solution has to be found. I will

:06:28.:06:32.

emphasise again that the decision is not in your hands, you are

:06:32.:06:35.

merely on the steering committee that makes the recommendations, but

:06:36.:06:40.

I am hearing from you answers, I heard last week with David Cameron

:06:40.:06:44.

when he visited Leeds, that half a million people are about to be very

:06:44.:06:50.

disappointed. Well, I deal with children with heart disease every

:06:50.:06:55.

day, as do my colleagues in Leeds. If you ask a family what they care

:06:55.:06:58.

about, they care about knowing their child is going to have top

:06:58.:07:01.

quality care. Obviously it has to be as close to home as possible,

:07:01.:07:05.

and whatever happens in Leeds there will still be a cardiac centre in

:07:05.:07:10.

Leeds. What is important is that child can be guaranteed the highest

:07:10.:07:14.

quality care, and that means difficult decision making. I do

:07:14.:07:15.

appreciate you talking to us tonight.

:07:16.:07:19.

Well, it's not been a good day for train travellers in Yorkshire.

:07:19.:07:21.

Drivers for the FirstTransPennine Express have been on a 24-hour

:07:21.:07:24.

strike over pay. Only a quarter of the trains between York, Leeds and

:07:24.:07:28.

Manchester have been running. And the bad news is there's a second

:07:28.:07:31.

strike planned for Friday. Len Tingle is at Huddersfield Train

:07:31.:07:41.
:07:41.:07:42.

Station, where commuters have been travelling home.

:07:42.:07:49.

Yes, this is an indication of how hard the strike has hit First

:07:49.:07:56.

TransPennine Express trains. The first change arrived 20 minutes ago.

:07:56.:08:00.

Thousands of commuters use this route. It is one of the busiest in

:08:00.:08:02.

the North of England. They struggled to get to work this

:08:02.:08:06.

morning, and as they tracked back home to light, it did not get any

:08:06.:08:09.

better. A familiar story for rail

:08:09.:08:12.

passengers this evening. The electronic noticeboards he at

:08:12.:08:15.

Huddersfield station confirm that around three-quarters of that

:08:15.:08:19.

normal number of first as Bonn Express trains that stop here from

:08:19.:08:23.

York, Leeds or Manchester had been cancelled -- First TransPennine

:08:23.:08:29.

Express. In fact, the first train was the 1857 to Leeds. Commuters

:08:29.:08:32.

arriving home were not impressed at the failure of the company and the

:08:32.:08:36.

train drivers' union Aslef to even agree to meet to discuss a pay

:08:36.:08:44.

offer of around 5% that is already on the table. I had to alter my

:08:44.:08:48.

working arrangements to get here and back on time. The drivers'

:08:48.:08:52.

dispute? I would rather not say. think there was a train missing

:08:52.:08:55.

this morning and I was delayed about 15 minutes. But coming back,

:08:55.:09:00.

I think there are some trains missed, but I have got here. This

:09:00.:09:04.

evening, the union repeated what it said when talks collapsed yesterday.

:09:04.:09:09.

It things are 5% offer, double what prompted a strike ballot earlier

:09:09.:09:14.

this month, is in the right ball park, but it wants further

:09:14.:09:19.

discussion that the disc -- offer in his new more flexible work

:09:19.:09:25.

practices. So far, no meeting has been fixed. With time running out

:09:25.:09:29.

before the second strike set for Friday. This dispute over pay needs

:09:29.:09:33.

to be resolved through dialogue, not disrupting trains. I am hopeful

:09:33.:09:37.

we can meet the union and do just that, resolve it for the customer's

:09:37.:09:41.

benefit. They have been big bonuses for managers, big dividends for

:09:41.:09:45.

shareholders, and they are returning big profits. The only

:09:45.:09:53.

real assets are the workers. To ask for an RPI tied rate is reasonable

:09:53.:10:01.

and acceptable. First TransPennine Express trains, as well as another

:10:01.:10:05.

service between Sheffield and Manchester, says it has much trains

:10:05.:10:09.

running today than it thought it would. It does admit that even

:10:09.:10:12.

though the strike ends at midnight they could be disruption tomorrow

:10:12.:10:18.

before things return to normal. I spoke to one of the negotiators for

:10:18.:10:21.

the unions just a couple of hours ago and he said he will try to talk

:10:21.:10:25.

to the company tomorrow, but if that agreement is not made, then

:10:25.:10:30.

that strike will go ahead on Friday, and that coincides with one of the

:10:30.:10:34.

busiest periods that the train service has. One of the biggest

:10:34.:10:37.

events in Yorkshire takes place over the weekend, the Leeds

:10:37.:10:41.

Festival. There will be a lot of backpackers on those trains heading

:10:41.:10:45.

towards Leeds. Thank you, I know you will keep us

:10:45.:10:48.

in touch. Stay with us for last night's

:10:48.:10:51.

Carling Cup action, as Leeds United go through to the third round,

:10:51.:10:57.

beating Yorkshire opposition for the second time in a row.

:10:57.:10:59.

A 19-year-old woman has appeared before magistrates in Wakefield

:10:59.:11:02.

accused of intending to encourage violent disorder in the city via

:11:02.:11:05.

the social media site Facebook. Hollie Bentley is alleged to have

:11:05.:11:08.

posted a message on August 9th during disturbances around the

:11:08.:11:12.

country. It's claimed she sent it to 700 people encouraging them to

:11:12.:11:17.

take part in an event in Wakefield. The case was adjourned after Miss

:11:17.:11:23.

Bentley was told the matter must go to the Crown Court.

:11:23.:11:25.

A 12-year-old boy from Halifax is recovering in hospital after

:11:26.:11:30.

falling from a ride at a theme park in Lancashire. The boy was seen

:11:30.:11:36.

hanging from Excalibur 2 at Camelot near Chorley. The Health and Safety

:11:36.:11:39.

Executive has closed the ride for full safety checks to be carried

:11:39.:11:43.

out. The boy is in a comfortable condition.

:11:43.:11:46.

A taxi driver whose careless driving led to the death of 19-

:11:46.:11:49.

year-old Lisa Saville in Halifax last March has been given a 12-

:11:49.:11:52.

month suspended prison sentence. Bradford Crown Court heard that

:11:52.:11:55.

Miss Saville never recovered after hitting her head as she jumped out

:11:55.:11:59.

of Jawaid Iqbal's moving taxi. He said he panicked and drove off

:11:59.:12:08.

after being threatened by another passenger.

:12:08.:12:11.

The Digital UK help teams have been out in force across South Yorkshire

:12:11.:12:13.

and North Derbyshire. That's because all analogue TV channels

:12:14.:12:17.

have now been switched off in Sheffield and Chesterfield. It

:12:17.:12:20.

means if you receive your TV from one of those transmitters you

:12:20.:12:28.

should by now have re-tuned. Nicola Rees reports.

:12:28.:12:34.

Look who the digital switch-over is the biggest thing to happen to

:12:34.:12:38.

television since the introduction of colour. Here in South Yorkshire

:12:38.:12:43.

the Chesterfield and Sheffield transmitters, which serve around

:12:43.:12:46.

150,000 people, have now had their analogue signals completely

:12:46.:12:54.

switched off. And that means people around here will now need to retune

:12:54.:12:58.

their televisions. This afternoon, help was on hand for those who had

:12:58.:13:03.

lost their favourite channels. is TV in your household? The team

:13:03.:13:06.

has become a familiar sight on our streets. You can't have failed to

:13:07.:13:10.

notice this chap. Thanks to their help and advice, most people have

:13:10.:13:15.

got the message about the switch- over. Most, but not all. This

:13:15.:13:19.

morning my wife but the television on and everything disappeared. Why

:13:19.:13:26.

is that? Today is the big day for Sheffield. Overnight, all of the

:13:26.:13:29.

analogue services have been switched off permanently, so if you

:13:29.:13:34.

are an analogue viewer there is now nothing to watch. In North Aston, a

:13:34.:13:40.

new company specialises in digital TV. The director expected to be

:13:40.:13:44.

inundated with calls today, but it seems his engineers were not needed

:13:44.:13:50.

after all. A bit of an anti-climax. We have had some good work over the

:13:50.:13:54.

years in preparation for digital TV, but, although it is quite at the

:13:54.:13:59.

moment, when the 4.5 million people's start retuning their TV

:13:59.:14:04.

sets, the ball could be in a different court. So far, any

:14:04.:14:09.

180,000 people in our area have made the switch, so any more will

:14:09.:14:13.

be the big test. A match which is over in September, this lot could

behind to beat Yorkshire opposition. The line-up said this one meant

:15:19.:15:23.

more to Rovers than their visitors. They were largely unchanged from

:15:23.:15:33.

their last league match. Leeds rested players after their game at

West Ham two days earlier. Mistakes crept in. Another sweeping move

It is never that simple. Cardiff get an equaliser in injury time,

to haunt you, and that is what happened about 30 seconds from the

:16:45.:16:55.
:16:55.:16:55.

end. Frustration for Huddersfield Town. Tonight it is the turn of

Williams is a bit eccentric. His favourite pastime is recreating

scenes from a World War II movie. But this is a canal barge,

brother and son found them, and thought it would be a good thing to

:18:20.:18:26.

build for my birthday. I ended up with a submarine! Every little boy

:18:26.:18:32.

wants a submarine or a train set, and I have got one! It cost nearly

:18:32.:18:37.

60,000 and took three months to build. It has no windows. Even

though it looks like a submarine, a does not go any deeper than about

:18:52.:18:59.

cannot swim. I am petrified of water. Once you are inside, apart

from its rocking every now and again, it does not feel any

:19:03.:19:06.

different from being in a house, apart from it being quite cramped

:19:06.:19:11.

and dark. Richard cruises up and down the Leeds and Liverpool Canal,

could not have you ex-boxer. It is not just outside Leeds, where it

:19:42.:19:50.

will be for the next few days. A I was waiting for it to submerge.

Do not be silly! What do you think is the best way

and that is what makes a difference. Unless you understand theirs and

study them, you will not get a perfect accent of any description.

technical than that. We're not talking about a, he, I, oh, you.

:23:49.:23:59.
:23:59.:24:03.

We're talking about "ah" as in "car". Seriously, I do not

understand why they needed her to have an accent. It could be any

person meeting somebody. It is a great book. Rather than do a bad

one... I cannot understand it. Everybody is going on about it.

Bank holiday weekend is coming up. There is an improvement over the

:25:18.:25:25.

weekend. This is a lovely photograph of Bridlington, taken by

Ian Dickinson. A's another photograph. It clouded up a little

bit. This is a beautiful shot. We have had a pleasant day to day. We

:25:38.:25:44.

have a weather warning from the met Office, for heavy rain and later

:25:44.:25:53.

tonight and first thing this -- first thing tomorrow. The pattern

:25:53.:25:59.

is quiet and settled for the next few days. I think there will be an

:26:00.:26:06.

improvement through the weekend. Cloud has pushed him from the West.

:26:06.:26:12.

A few showers could be heavy, there may well clear away. The cloud will

:26:12.:26:15.

thicken from the south and outbreaks of rain will push

:26:15.:26:25.
:26:25.:26:32.

northwards. Temperatures will be around 10, 11. The sun will rise at

Just one of two sharp showers to contend with. The temperatures will

struggle to left through the morning. By the afternoon, we

:27:06.:27:13.

should get up to around 19 degrees. Friday still looks fairly unsettled.

:27:13.:27:19.

It will start on a fine note. Still a few showers for Saturday. It

should become mostly drive through the weekend. How do they say bus in
