leading a double life and killed his partner before hiding her body | :00:13. | :00:17.
in a suitcase. On the programme, a big increase in the number of arson | :00:17. | :00:23.
attacks. We reveal a doubling in the number of deliberate small | :00:23. | :00:26.
fires in Yorkshire. # Many rivers to cross # | :00:26. | :00:32.
And the man who brought regular groi millions entertains music fans | :00:32. | :00:36.
in Yorkshire. It has been a fairy autumnal day today. This shot was | :00:36. | :00:40.
taken across the Peak District, with some rain to come tonight. All | :00:40. | :00:50.

Good evening. Welcome to Look North. A court has heard that a music | :00:54. | :00:59.
teacher killed his partner in a prolonged attack in their home in | :01:00. | :01:02.
Holmfirth in Yorkshire last December. Andrew Lindo claims he | :01:02. | :01:06.
want frod tect his daughter from mistreatment by her mother, her | :01:06. | :01:10.
body was put in a suitcase in the garage and wasn't discovered for | :01:10. | :01:15.
two months. He denies murder but admits manslaughter. Our crime | :01:15. | :01:24.
correspondent explains. 66 Percent ver rans Place where they were | :01:24. | :01:29.
living with their two children for nearly a year. Mr Lindo, who is 29 | :01:29. | :01:35.
contends he was a faithful loving partner, enduring abuse over a | :01:35. | :01:41.
number of years at the hands of his 30-year-old partner. But the | :01:41. | :01:46.
prosecution at his trial in Bradford say the vocal tutor at a | :01:46. | :01:51.
Barnsley music centre was a liar, living a double life at the time of | :01:52. | :01:57.
Marie Stewarts killing. They allege on December 18th last year, she was | :01:57. | :02:01.
murdered by Mr Lindo, her body dumped in a suitcase in the garage | :02:01. | :02:06.
and he invited his lover Angela to spend the night in his house. In a | :02:06. | :02:12.
police interview after his arrest, Mr Lindo was said to have portrayed | :02:12. | :02:18.
himself as brow-beaten and isolated. Yet faithful to Marie Stewart, | :02:18. | :02:22.
despite her alleged fiscal abuse of him and her emotional abuse of | :02:23. | :02:28.
their children. He claims he and Miss Stuart hadn't been a couple | :02:28. | :02:32.
for some time before her killing. He his life he said was a knight | :02:32. | :02:38.
mare. He and the children got on better when she wasn't there. There | :02:38. | :02:42.
wasn't this oppressive atmosphere in the house. He had been faithful | :02:42. | :02:47.
until driven to infidelty. The prosecution say he is a liar, there | :02:47. | :02:51.
had been no abuse by Miss Stuart and no loss of control by her | :02:51. | :02:58.
partner. The trial is expected to last about two weeks. It is back | :02:58. | :03:01.
the school this week for thousands of pupils across Yorkshire but many | :03:01. | :03:05.
students will be going to a new type of school. A free school. | :03:05. | :03:08.
There are 24 such schools opening this month in England and three of | :03:08. | :03:12.
them are right here in Yorkshire. But not even is in favour of them. | :03:12. | :03:17.
So what is a free school? Free schools are set up by groups of | :03:17. | :03:21.
parent, teacher, charity, businesses and religious groups in | :03:21. | :03:25.
England. Who is paying for them? Funding comes from central | :03:25. | :03:29.
Government. 24 schools in England will receive 130 million between | :03:29. | :03:35.
them. So, could people confuse free schools with academies? Yes, there | :03:35. | :03:40.
are lots of similarity, like and r an Academy it controls its budget, | :03:40. | :03:46.
curriculum hours and holidays but unlike an academy it is set up in | :03:46. | :03:50.
response to community demand. We report from Batley and Bradford. A | :03:50. | :03:57.
new be binning for ballotly grammar. Founded almost 400 years ago, today | :03:57. | :04:01.
it became one of Yorkshire's first free schools. The Government says | :04:01. | :04:04.
the idea will help meet parental demand in areas where educational | :04:04. | :04:09.
achievement is low. The hope is that free schools will raise | :04:09. | :04:15.
standards through more competition. Yes, to greater diversity. Yes, to | :04:15. | :04:23.
more choice for parents. But no to running schools for profit. Not in | :04:23. | :04:29.
hour state-funded education system. Here at the Rainbow school staff | :04:29. | :04:32.
are preparing for new tefrplt a week today the classroom will be | :04:32. | :04:36.
full. But what will a free school mean for pupils and parents? We are | :04:36. | :04:40.
obviously going to be offering longer school day, we are opening | :04:40. | :04:45.
from 8.30 till four in the afternoon. We are giving a greater | :04:45. | :04:49.
concentration of time to the core subs, within that school day. We | :04:49. | :04:53.
are also offering a Saturday morning school, that will happen | :04:53. | :04:59.
once a month, which will give opportunities for much more | :04:59. | :05:03.
challenging activities that will open the eyes of our young people. | :05:03. | :05:06.
Rainbow will share the buildings with the Bradford science academy, | :05:06. | :05:11.
also a free school, but critics fee free school funding by Government | :05:12. | :05:21.
could drain money for maintenance grey other schools. There are fears | :05:21. | :05:25.
it could undermine community cohesion Having lived in the | :05:25. | :05:30.
district we have seen how communities have devolved and most | :05:30. | :05:35.
of the inner city schools are Monday no ethnic at the moment. | :05:35. | :05:38.
They have been like this for the last 20 years. The Local Authority | :05:38. | :05:43.
and the powers that be do not seem to have done anything about this | :05:43. | :05:47.
issue. At Batley grammar parents we spoke to this morning not | :05:47. | :05:49.
surprisingly were enthusiastic about the free school concept. | :05:49. | :05:53.
is good for the kids and the parents. Being able to send their | :05:53. | :05:59.
kinds to a, you know, better higher standard school. This school | :05:59. | :06:03.
because it is already running, and already, the structure is there, so | :06:04. | :06:08.
I think it would be successful. will see how things change. | :06:08. | :06:12.
Hopefully, I don't think it is going to change too much, but we | :06:12. | :06:15.
will wait and see. These youngsters may have got their first lessons | :06:15. | :06:19.
out of the way, but for those behind the free school concept, the | :06:19. | :06:28.
learning curve is just beginning. Joining us from Westminster is | :06:28. | :06:33.
David Ward the Liberal Democrat Democrat for Bradford east. You | :06:33. | :06:37.
should be championling these schools shouldn't you? I champion | :06:37. | :06:43.
all schools as best I can. I do that particularly within the | :06:43. | :06:48.
maintained sector by telling people what good work is being done there. | :06:48. | :06:51.
Not in effect rubbishing them by saying we need something else, | :06:51. | :06:55.
because they are fail, which is really what the story is behind | :06:55. | :07:00.
this proposal. The idea of course and the background to the coalition | :07:00. | :07:04.
government's education policy is surely to encourage schools and | :07:04. | :07:09.
areas of social deprivation and to offer parents a real alternative to | :07:09. | :07:14.
mainstream schools. Now those boxes are surely ticked by these schools. | :07:14. | :07:19.
What is it that these schools are going to do? That other schools | :07:19. | :07:24.
cannot? Why cannot these proposers get really heavily involved in | :07:24. | :07:27.
supporting some of the other schools? Some of the classroom | :07:27. | :07:31.
numbers will be small as well. That has to be a good thing. We know | :07:31. | :07:36.
that Bradford has had prop problems? OK, let us look at that | :07:36. | :07:41.
as an issue. If this is going to be a school with smaller class size, | :07:41. | :07:47.
who will afor that. These will be effectively private schools which | :07:47. | :07:50.
will be publicly funded. That has to come from somewhere and it has | :07:50. | :07:55.
to come from other schools. accept that, you saying there might | :07:55. | :07:59.
be inferior or will they be better school that, the parents can say at | :07:59. | :08:02.
least we have had a choice and we are choosing to go there is this. | :08:02. | :08:07.
You just brushed aside the fact that they are expensive. We are, | :08:07. | :08:11.
within the coalition government, we are telling people, quite rightly | :08:11. | :08:15.
we are in the middle of a economic crisis. We are also saying to | :08:15. | :08:18.
school, because of that there is a limit to the fund that we can biv | :08:18. | :08:23.
to our maintained schools. On the same time, we are turning round, | :08:23. | :08:30.
and lo and behold finding 130 million to promote what is really | :08:30. | :08:34.
Michael Gove's pet project. So fact they are going to drive up | :08:34. | :08:36.
standards is something that Bradford needs, it is something | :08:36. | :08:40.
they have been lagging behind for so long. Where is the evidence? | :08:40. | :08:46.
Where is the evidence they will drive up standards? Look, the | :08:46. | :08:52.
secret to a good effective school is not so hard the find. Quality | :08:52. | :08:55.
head teacher, quality teaching, quality management, teaching and | :08:55. | :09:00.
learning taking place, that can happen in any school in any | :09:00. | :09:04.
structure, what is the fear? What is it about these schools that will | :09:04. | :09:09.
make them so special? Other than a lot of more additional funding. If | :09:09. | :09:12.
we gave ta tho other schools they could perform equally. Thank you | :09:12. | :09:19.
very much for joining us. Coming up. We are meant to be a nation of | :09:19. | :09:24.
animal lover, so why has the number of abandoned dos in Yorkshire hit | :09:24. | :09:30.
an 11 year high? And another accolade. We speak to the doctor | :09:30. | :09:35.
who has -- boxer who has added the bantamweight title to his other | :09:35. | :09:42.
belts. School holidays may be ore for many but figures show there is | :09:42. | :09:47.
a worrying number of ar sop attacks in the summer. The Fire Service say | :09:47. | :09:51.
the number has doubled here, Dan Johnson is in Sheffield this | :09:51. | :09:56.
evening. What is behind this? this is the kind of place that the | :09:56. | :10:00.
Fire Service have been back to time and Genk over the summer. It's a | :10:00. | :10:07.
derelict club and there is loads of rubbish dumped round here. It is | :10:07. | :10:12.
the kind of place for some who like to start fires there is too much | :10:12. | :10:16.
temptation. So across South Yorkshire there has been a big | :10:16. | :10:19.
increase in maul fires that don't involve risk to life. I have been | :10:19. | :10:22.
out with a fire crew in Sheffield, seeing how they deal with this | :10:22. | :10:31.
problem. It is Saturday night, and green watch at elm lane fire | :10:31. | :10:35.
station are called into action. They deal with a lot of small fires, | :10:35. | :10:39.
started deliberately and they have had a busy time over the summer | :10:39. | :10:43.
holidays. It is half past nine and this the first call out. A car on | :10:43. | :10:48.
fire, in a residential street, one of the Sheffield estates. This is | :10:48. | :10:52.
typical of the sort of fire they have been dealing with all summer. | :10:52. | :10:56.
Some places get repeatedly targeted. This derelict working mens' club is | :10:56. | :11:01.
a hotspot for kids setting fires. Steve's an arson reduction officer. | :11:01. | :11:06.
He is trying to put a stop the problem. At least once a week and | :11:06. | :11:11.
some time, consecutive nights we are coming down here, it stops us, | :11:11. | :11:14.
dealing with really -- real emergencies where people's lives | :11:14. | :11:20.
are at risk. It is piles of rubbish set alight. Matches thrown on the | :11:20. | :11:24.
dry grass. When you look at the fig yours can see just how busy they | :11:24. | :11:30.
have been. In July and August last yore, there were 653 deliberate | :11:30. | :11:34.
secondary fires. For the same period this year, that has doubled | :11:34. | :11:39.
to more than 1300. That means they are dealing with 20 fires every day. | :11:39. | :11:45.
At the moment we have a dry spell, we see an increase in number of | :11:45. | :11:49.
small anti-social behaviour fires. Rubbish fire, grass fire, that type | :11:49. | :11:55.
of incident. They stop us attending life-threatening or property | :11:55. | :11:59.
threatening incidents. So Steve is also out regularly talking to young | :11:59. | :12:04.
people. Trying to divert them away from starting fires. Do you know | :12:04. | :12:07.
anything about fires that are set here? Activities are available to | :12:07. | :12:12.
keep them off the streets. Football, or computer games. We ask them | :12:12. | :12:15.
questions. Get them on our side. Make them aware of the problems we | :12:15. | :12:20.
have with little fires that we have. The anti-social behaviour fires. | :12:20. | :12:23.
the meantime, the crew have put out the car fire. But it probably won't | :12:23. | :12:30.
be long before they are called out again. Well even since we filmed | :12:30. | :12:34.
here on Friday there have been two more fires over the weekend. The | :12:34. | :12:37.
Fire Service back here Saturday and Sunday. Now they are blaming this | :12:37. | :12:41.
increase on the long dry spell that we have had this summer. They are | :12:41. | :12:45.
warning that the time they spend dealing with the small nuisance | :12:45. | :12:49.
fires could mean delays to them getting to more important possibly | :12:49. | :12:58.
Investigations are continuing in York after a man was hit and killed | :12:58. | :13:04.
by taxi. They'd happened on Museum Street in the city centre. The man | :13:04. | :13:10.
and a woman he was with were trapped under the car. Police have | :13:11. | :13:13.
arrested a third person on suspicion of murdering a man in | :13:13. | :13:18.
Leeds. Jason Hall died of head injuries in Temple Newsam after | :13:18. | :13:22.
what police said was a sustained assault. Police are still appealing | :13:22. | :13:28.
for witnesses. An MP has called for an urgent meeting with the health | :13:28. | :13:32.
secretary after -- about the future of the children's heart unit in | :13:32. | :13:36.
Leeds. Campaigners have fought for months to says the unit. Rachel | :13:36. | :13:41.
Reeves once the meeting with Andrew Lansley. I think that we need to | :13:41. | :13:45.
sit down with Andrew Lansley and make it clear to him the strength | :13:45. | :13:50.
of local opinion, because every time I am talking to patients and | :13:50. | :13:54.
give families in Leeds, I am more and more certain that it should be | :13:54. | :14:00.
kept open for children and families in our region. The number of stray | :14:00. | :14:04.
and abandoned yacht -- dogs in Yorkshire are at its highest for | :14:04. | :14:09.
more than a decade according to a report by the Dogs Trust. More than | :14:09. | :14:15.
500 were put down because no homes to be found for them. We have been | :14:15. | :14:22.
to a dog charity. This is just one section of the kennels. These are | :14:22. | :14:28.
the lucky ones. They have been re- homed. 580 dogs in West Yorkshire | :14:28. | :14:37.
were not that Lucker -- lucky. With me is the director of the Dogs | :14:37. | :14:43.
Trust. We are constantly full. Another dog always comes in to take | :14:43. | :14:48.
his place. The straight kennels bring us constantly for help. | :14:48. | :14:54.
thing there has been a big increase this year? The economy takes a part | :14:54. | :14:58.
in it. People do not have as much money, they work longer hours, and | :14:58. | :15:01.
they have not told about the commitment involved, and some | :15:01. | :15:09.
people view them as it stick -- disposable I can its -- disposable | :15:09. | :15:19.

on the TV, and I wanted to take a dog home from here that needs a | :15:23. | :15:29.
home. Everyone seemed to take puppies, but I'll doctors need | :15:30. | :15:36.

more docks here. A lot of dogs have been fitted with microchips, which | :15:49. | :15:56.

weekend, but what a win for Doncaster's Jamie McDonald. He won | :16:24. | :16:30.
the World Bantam while -- bantamweight title. He won on a | :16:30. | :16:34.
unanimous points decision. He came into the studio earlier with his | :16:34. | :16:40.
belt. It was a really tough night. As you can see, I have the marks to | :16:40. | :16:48.
prove it! You got worst buys than I have! A how tough was it? Did you | :16:48. | :16:57.
always have confidence to win that fight? I was 100 % confident. I | :16:58. | :17:02.
knew if I had got caught, he could have knocked me out, and others | :17:02. | :17:09.
worried about that, but we had our gain clan -- game-plan. I am the | :17:09. | :17:17.

than when he did. It was a really tough fight. What do you do now | :17:25. | :17:33.
after this 10th week intensive training camp? A holiday? Yes. I | :17:33. | :17:39.
have my holiday booked! I have Doncaster or races but, and then I | :17:39. | :17:44.
am going on holiday with my girlfriend in Turkey. I am thinking | :17:44. | :17:49.
that I will fight again next summer. I think there will be two more | :17:49. | :17:59.

European defences. Then there will maybe be a fight for an eliminator. | :18:00. | :18:08.

long time. He is very welcome. privileged to meet him. He has not | :22:34. | :22:40.
been back to Yorkshire for a long time. It is a pleasure to be here. | :22:40. | :22:47.
Not quite the Caribbean weather that you are used to. I still love | :22:47. | :22:53.
it. What is it that you laugh about the British audience? I think the | :22:53. | :23:01.
British audience were my first international acceptance, and so | :23:01. | :23:09.
they gave me the push off. They have always been very receptive and | :23:10. | :23:18.
enthusiastic about my music. Over the years, you brought reggae music | :23:18. | :23:21.
to the rest of the world, and a lot of them have had really positive | :23:21. | :23:26.
messages. How do you think they are still being interpreted today? | :23:26. | :23:30.
think that is one of the things that has kept my music going, | :23:30. | :23:36.
because it has had a positive message. Today, the way the world | :23:37. | :23:42.
is today, especially with the economic situation and all of that, | :23:42. | :23:48.
people need some sort of positive message to appreciate your own life, | :23:48. | :23:54.
and want to go on and enrich your life. I think my music at least | :23:54. | :23:58.
supplies some of that. You played at Glastonbury recently, and that | :23:58. | :24:05.
was a very different audience in terms of age levels. It is so wide | :24:05. | :24:10.
audience, a very eclectic audience, and a huge audience! That was great. | :24:10. | :24:20.
:24:20. | :24:21. | ||
You have done all sorts, from acting, to being a super start in | :24:22. | :24:26.
the music industry. I've not done Broadway! We would love to see | :24:26. | :24:36.
that! My first love was acting. I have not pursued by acting career. | :24:36. | :24:42.
I did three movies. I have a lot more songster right, lots more | :24:42. | :24:51.
touring to do, working to become a stadium act, and not to be done. | :24:51. | :24:57.
You are going to be performing tomorrow at the Academy in Leeds. | :24:57. | :25:07.
:25:07. | :25:10. | ||
Give us a tune! I know they will be expecting... # Wonderful world, | :25:10. | :25:20.
:25:20. | :25:36. | ||
Lovely! My first love was singing. Maybe you could sing as out tonight. | :25:36. | :25:42.
No time for pictures tonight, but an autumnal flavour in the air. It | :25:42. | :25:49.
will be windy and very unsettled. will be windy and very unsettled. | :25:49. | :25:51.
One Merck in this chart -- one look at this chart will tell you what is | :25:51. | :25:56.
coming. We will have quite a bit of brain. You can see the cloud | :25:56. | :25:59.
hurtling in from the Atlantic. There is a little bit of brightness | :26:00. | :26:04.
around across eastern areas right now. One or two showers showing up | :26:05. | :26:10.
on the radar picture. There will be rain in the Pennines this evening | :26:10. | :26:16.
if there is not any them now. Later tonight, there will be some | :26:16. | :26:20.
persistent local heavy rain on the hills. Some moderate bursts further | :26:20. | :26:30.
:26:30. | :26:32. | ||
east. A real autumnal flavour. Temperatures down to 11 Celsius. | :26:32. | :26:42.
:26:42. | :26:48. | ||
The sun will rise at 6:24am. Allow extra time with rain to get to work. | :26:48. | :26:54.
By mid-to-late morning, it will have cleared the coast. Most of the | :26:54. | :26:58.
showers will be in the West. Further east, it is not looking too | :26:58. | :27:04.
bad. A fair amount of dry weather. One or two showers. The main | :27:04. | :27:09.
feature of the weather will be strong gusts. Top temperatures in | :27:09. | :27:14.
Scarborough of around 18 Celsius, but across the Pennines, 15 or 16 | :27:14. | :27:18.
will probably be the best we can hope for. A number of shells in the | :27:18. | :27:24.
afternoon. That fairly chilly blast from the West. Another up windy day | :27:24. | :27:30. |
