On Look North tonight: An alcohol hotspot - Calderdale tops the | :00:05. | :00:08.
region for the number of women treated in hospital for alcohol | :00:08. | :00:18.
:00:18. | :00:22. | ||
problems. We hear about one woman's addiction. I used to wake up and | :00:22. | :00:25.
drink, go back to sleep and repeat the cycle. | :00:25. | :00:30.
Also tonight: The fight continues - Campaigners say they'll step up | :00:30. | :00:32.
their protests against ticket barriers at Sheffield Station. | :00:32. | :00:35.
And the churches pulling out all the stops to try to end a shortage | :00:36. | :00:45.

Overcast skies in Leeds today. The First tonight - disturbing evidence | :00:55. | :00:58.
about alcohol addiction in West Yorkshire. Calderdale, which | :00:59. | :01:01.
includes towns like Halifax, Brighouse and Hebden Bridge has the | :01:01. | :01:04.
highest number of women in the region and the third-highest number | :01:04. | :01:13.
of men admitted to hospital because they've drunk too much. 272 women | :01:13. | :01:16.
spent at least one night in hospital in Calderdale last year | :01:16. | :01:22.
because of excessive drinking. For men, the number rose to 529 - and | :01:22. | :01:25.
bear in mind that these figures don't include people who were | :01:25. | :01:31.
simply treated in casualty and then discharged. And the problem starts | :01:31. | :01:34.
at an early age, with an average of 42 youngsters under the age of 18 | :01:34. | :01:40.
admitted each year because of alcohol problems. Our reporter | :01:40. | :01:43.
Amanda Harper has been to meet one woman who started drinking at the | :01:43. | :01:52.
age of 14. I would wake up in the morning and want a drink. I've | :01:52. | :01:58.
always made sure I had a drink, whether under my pillow, at the | :01:58. | :02:06.
side of my bed. I would make sure there was a drink close to me. It | :02:06. | :02:11.
was to allow me to function that day. Clare was just 14 when she | :02:11. | :02:16.
started drinking, a teenage alcoholic. Falling out with her | :02:16. | :02:20.
parents and failing at school. Into her twenties, printing continued to | :02:20. | :02:27.
be a way of life until last year, when she ended up in intensive care. | :02:27. | :02:36.
There is nothing left inside you. There is nothing left except pain | :02:36. | :02:43.
and you don't want to fit any more so the easiest thing is to drink. | :02:43. | :02:51.
That is how low I felt inside. I can understand why people say it is | :02:51. | :02:55.
selfish but feeling the pain and your soul being taken, that is | :02:55. | :03:01.
where I wanted to be. This story isn't unusual. Between 2009 and | :03:01. | :03:06.
2010, in Calderdale alone, 200 and so the two women were admitted to | :03:06. | :03:11.
hospital because of health problems directly related to alcohol. That | :03:11. | :03:19.
is an average of 23 women among. Claire came here for help. This | :03:19. | :03:23.
tradition Halifax supports people who are struggling with addiction. | :03:23. | :03:29.
90% of the people who come here have referred themselves. | :03:29. | :03:34.
Prediction is around behaviours, it is not specifically about drugs or | :03:34. | :03:40.
alcohol or gambling. We have had people from all walks of life. What | :03:40. | :03:43.
is amazing with the groups and the works that we do is that people | :03:43. | :03:50.
identify with each other across roles. The centre is run by people | :03:50. | :03:55.
who themselves have been affected by addiction. Courses run every | :03:55. | :04:00.
week but most importantly, it is somewhere where someone will listen. | :04:00. | :04:05.
Some believe once said to me that you live a life beyond your wildest | :04:05. | :04:11.
dreams. I really didn't believe them but I am living in now. I am | :04:11. | :04:17.
really happy. Clare has turned her life around and next week starts at | :04:17. | :04:20.
university. This new chapter in her life is heading in a very different | :04:20. | :04:29.
direction. A grieving mother who gave birth to | :04:29. | :04:32.
a stillborn baby boy just weeks ago has begun a campaign against a | :04:32. | :04:38.
Facebook page. Hazel Wood from Catterick says material posted to | :04:38. | :04:44.
one site - Dead Baby Jokes - should be taken down. She wasn't | :04:44. | :04:47.
personally targetted but says the site is offensive and the people | :04:47. | :04:57.
:04:57. | :04:58. | ||
behind it are sick. Tom Ingall has For Hazel Wood and her husband, | :04:58. | :05:03.
this time should have been special, awaiting the birth of their third | :05:03. | :05:09.
child. But seven weeks ago, for two weeks into her pregnancy, she gave | :05:09. | :05:14.
birth to a stillborn son, Harry. You think, why me? You see other | :05:14. | :05:17.
people in the hospital walking around with their babies and you | :05:17. | :05:25.
think, that should have been mean. -- that should have been me. After | :05:25. | :05:30.
using the intent to share her experiences with others, she also | :05:30. | :05:37.
found a Facebook page found -- caught dead baby jokes. I am | :05:37. | :05:44.
petitioning to get this page removed. She wasn't personally | :05:44. | :05:49.
targeted but feels the material is offensive. People will say you | :05:49. | :05:54.
could lock off, you don't have to read it. But it is still out there, | :05:54. | :05:59.
people are still looking, they are disgracing our children's memories, | :05:59. | :06:07.
they are degrading us as human beings of having perfect memories | :06:07. | :06:11.
of our children. They are showing people it is OK to be that way. A | :06:11. | :06:17.
couple of people have said, they have freedom of speech. But where | :06:17. | :06:22.
are our children's freedom of speech and their human rights? | :06:23. | :06:32.
:06:33. | :06:47. | ||
Facebook said they have a warning But Hazel macro's campaign is | :06:47. | :06:54.
gazing -- gaining momentum. Her grief and the rawness of her | :06:54. | :07:02.
emotions has turned into a passion. I am sure many people have views on | :07:02. | :07:05.
that story. And just a reminder that if you've | :07:05. | :07:08.
got any views on that story or anything else in the programme, | :07:08. | :07:11.

decline - we hear how a Yorkshire grandmother went into hospital for | :07:35. | :07:44.
treatment but came out unable to Controversial plans to install | :07:44. | :07:47.
ticket barriers at Sheffield Station are now looking more likely | :07:47. | :07:51.
to go ahead. The Department of Transport says they're the best way | :07:51. | :07:54.
to stop ticket fraud. But there have been protests against their | :07:54. | :07:56.
introduction because campaigners say they'll stop a public right of | :07:56. | :08:06.
:08:06. | :08:11. | ||
The for three years, there have been protests that this plans to | :08:11. | :08:15.
install ticket barriers that Sheffield station. The campaign | :08:15. | :08:18.
thought the fight was over when the Labour government said they had | :08:18. | :08:22.
changed their plans but for places are back after seeing a letter from | :08:22. | :08:27.
the Transport Secretary address to the Deputy Prime Minister. The in | :08:27. | :08:31.
that letter, Philip Hammond said it was his view that the only way to | :08:31. | :08:36.
protect the station, in his opinion, was via automatic ticket barriers | :08:36. | :08:42.
and he was personally determined to see them in style. The footbridge | :08:42. | :08:46.
is the main reason for the protests. What campaigners are worried about | :08:46. | :08:50.
is that if the ticket barriers are installed, that public right-of-way | :08:50. | :08:53.
will end. There are other ways through the city, including an | :08:53. | :08:58.
older bridge but campaigners say it is unsafe and not accessible to | :08:58. | :09:03.
disabled people. We have a perfectly good bridge built with | :09:03. | :09:08.
public money which is well used. 2,400 people use it every day to | :09:08. | :09:11.
get from one side of the station to the other. That is not a small | :09:11. | :09:17.
number of people. We don't intend to lose that unless and until there | :09:17. | :09:24.
is a serious viable alternative. The Transport Minister has told us | :09:24. | :09:29.
that ticketless travel at Sheffield station costs over 2 million a | :09:29. | :09:34.
year which she says is unacceptable. He added that the department is | :09:34. | :09:37.
keen to solve the issue in a pragmatic way that also addresses | :09:37. | :09:42.
the concerns of local residents. There is no indication of when or | :09:42. | :09:45.
how the ticket barriers will be installed but campaigners are | :09:45. | :09:49.
worried. They reached launching a protest through the station | :09:49. | :09:52.
tomorrow. In other news, the former Leeds | :09:52. | :09:55.
United footballer Terry Yorath has been taken to hospital after a fire | :09:55. | :09:58.
at his home in Leeds. Firefighters were called to his flat in | :09:58. | :10:02.
Alwoodley yesterday evening. The 61-year-old was treated in hospital | :10:02. | :10:05.
but is now back at home. Mr Yorath played for Leeds United between | :10:05. | :10:10.
1967 and 1976. He also played for and managed Bradford City. | :10:10. | :10:14.
Plans to erect a test mast for a wind farm near Hunmanby in North | :10:14. | :10:17.
Yorkshire have been approved following an appeal. The developer, | :10:17. | :10:20.
Banks Renewables, had applied to build test masts in both | :10:20. | :10:22.
Copmanthorpe and Hunmanby. Both were rejected by Scarborough | :10:22. | :10:26.
Council but the plans for Hunmanby have now been given the green light. | :10:26. | :10:32.
Up to 14 wind turbines could now be built on the South Dale site. | :10:32. | :10:35.
Next tonight - the story of how a 76-year-old grandmother went into | :10:35. | :10:40.
hospital able to walk but came out totally immobile. The case of | :10:40. | :10:43.
Sylvia Hall from North Yorkshire is being highlighted by a charity, | :10:43. | :10:45.
which is calling for better treatment for people with muscular | :10:45. | :10:50.
dystrophy. It says it's got evidence that the lives of the | :10:50. | :10:53.
6,000 people with rare muscle- wasting conditions across Yorkshire | :10:53. | :10:56.
are being put at risk by inappropriate treatment in hospital. | :10:56. | :11:06.
Here's our health correspondent She has been stepping this one room | :11:06. | :11:09.
since May. Trapped between the bed and the commode, she cannot get to | :11:10. | :11:16.
on her own. She has muscular dystrophy and has had mobility | :11:16. | :11:20.
problems for years but before a stay in hospital for a suspected | :11:20. | :11:23.
broken knee, she could get out and about. Her family say they | :11:23. | :11:28.
repeatedly told staff that her condition meant she should not be | :11:28. | :11:33.
kept immobile and should seek advice from a specialist. We tried | :11:33. | :11:38.
to tell them that had couldn't just lay in bed. I never expected, when | :11:38. | :11:42.
I tried to get out, that her couldn't stand. That was quite a | :11:42. | :11:50.
shock. I had been standing before so I expected to come at the same | :11:50. | :11:55.
way. Her husband is disabled as well so full-time carers have to | :11:55. | :11:59.
come in to help Sylvia to the commode and to bed. Her family also | :11:59. | :12:03.
claimed medication to protect her heart was stopped without | :12:03. | :12:08.
consultation when she was in hospital. We told them not to keep | :12:08. | :12:11.
her bed-bound. We explained the muscular dystrophy. You can | :12:11. | :12:15.
maintain the level of fitness you had but you cannot regain their | :12:15. | :12:19.
level of fitness once this is lost. And we have been proved right. She | :12:19. | :12:25.
is not on her feel now, she cannot go out of the house, she is vastly | :12:25. | :12:30.
more disabled now than when she went in. She said the other day | :12:30. | :12:36.
when asked about her life, it is over. Unfortunately, stories like | :12:36. | :12:40.
these are far too common. The years -- these are rare conditions and | :12:40. | :12:45.
often, hospital staff don't have enough about them. That is why we | :12:45. | :12:52.
are calling on manager's blushes in the reason -- in the region -- | :12:52. | :12:56.
calling on NHS bosses in the region to make sure the needs of patients | :12:56. | :13:01.
like Sylvia's aren't overlooked. Bolton Hospital said they are | :13:01. | :13:04.
disappointed to hear of any occasion with the care received | :13:04. | :13:14.
:13:14. | :13:15. | ||
It is too late for my mum, there is nothing we can do about that. But | :13:15. | :13:20.
if people are listening and they can do it for somebody else, then | :13:20. | :13:24.
maybe they won't have to go to the same things that we have had to go | :13:24. | :13:31.
through. That is why can hope for, really. I try not to get too | :13:31. | :13:38.
depressed. There are a lot of people lot worse off than me. | :13:38. | :13:40.
a great attitude. That is the right attitude. | :13:40. | :13:44.
Before 7pm: We meet the England hockey captain - putting club and | :13:44. | :13:49.
country aside as he plays against his old school team in Doncaster. | :13:49. | :13:53.
And wanted - more organists. Find out how some congregations are left | :13:53. | :14:03.
:14:03. | :14:10. | ||
Now the sport. If the first few weeks of the season are anything to | :14:10. | :14:14.
go by, it looks like Doncaster Rovers will have a fight on their | :14:14. | :14:21.
hands to stay in the Championship. How many weeks our way into the | :14:21. | :14:31.
:14:31. | :14:31. | ||
season? Four. It says here they are struggling to avoid relegation. | :14:31. | :14:37.
There is nine months left. Is the training ground a pretty gloomy | :14:37. | :14:47.
:14:47. | :14:50. | ||
place? You might be a little worried. This is not gloomy. Sean | :14:50. | :14:55.
O'Driscoll even let us do something most managers will not, watch parts | :14:55. | :14:59.
of a proper training session. If league positions were based on | :14:59. | :15:04.
enthusiasm, even for a seven-a-side against your mates, Doncaster | :15:04. | :15:07.
Rovers would be top of the Championship table and not where | :15:07. | :15:17.
:15:17. | :15:18. | ||
they are. Look away now, fans. They are rock-bottom. Everybody does not | :15:18. | :15:23.
walk around the place with their head in their hands. They want to | :15:23. | :15:29.
play. They want to do well. All you can do is preach the right things. | :15:29. | :15:38.
Another pleasant surprise is the sheer youthfulness of the captain. | :15:38. | :15:42.
Captains have recently been getting injured a lot, and he is happy to | :15:42. | :15:48.
take responsibility. We have put in some good performances and worked | :15:48. | :15:51.
really hard and sometimes the output has not been as much as we | :15:51. | :15:56.
wanted. The training has left an impact, and it definitely lifts our | :15:56. | :16:04.
spirits. Doncaster Rovers's mission is as simple as you get, score more | :16:04. | :16:10.
goals. They have only scored twice in six league matches. They need to | :16:10. | :16:20.
:16:20. | :16:22. | ||
win more. The Super League play- offs get under way, Leeds take on | :16:22. | :16:27.
Hull. First it is the turn of Huddersfield. They will play | :16:27. | :16:33.
Warrington. It is a difficult opener. Huddersfield had another | :16:33. | :16:41.
strong season, and the coach says the side are confident they can win. | :16:41. | :16:45.
We have played Warrington three times, we have had two victories | :16:45. | :16:50.
and a loss. Now they feel as a club and a group we know what is | :16:51. | :16:58.
required to beat Warrington. Now we will stay with rugby league. | :16:58. | :17:00.
Congratulate his defenders then, who are in the Championship Play- | :17:00. | :17:07.
off Final for the second year in a row. -- congratulations to | :17:07. | :17:13.
Featherstone. They lost in the final last year and will hope they | :17:13. | :17:19.
can win it this year. Last but not least, here is a young man who has | :17:19. | :17:24.
made it. Johnny Bairstow has not had much time to prove he was right | :17:24. | :17:29.
for the selectors, but he is making his full England debut for the game | :17:29. | :17:39.
:17:39. | :17:44. | ||
against India. He almost prevented the boundary. He nearly fell over a | :17:44. | :17:54.
:17:54. | :18:05. | ||
speaker. We hope he will do well. I am glad he is there. In less than a | :18:05. | :18:10.
year, Great Britain's hockey players will be going for glory in | :18:10. | :18:13.
the London Olympics. Among those aiming to beat the world's best | :18:13. | :18:17.
will be Barry Middleton, the current England captain. This | :18:17. | :18:21.
evening he has been taking on -- taking on a different challenge, | :18:21. | :18:29.
churning out for a at team against his former school. -- appearing for | :18:29. | :18:36.
at team. This is a really good atmosphere. People are a lot | :18:36. | :18:43.
younger than me. It is a really positive atmosphere. They are | :18:43. | :18:46.
launching the careers of some we will top two and a minute, but also | :18:46. | :18:53.
the Olympic dreams again of one old boy, Barry Middleton. He is the | :18:53. | :18:59.
England captain. We will talk to them about the events of today, but | :18:59. | :19:09.
:19:09. | :19:12. | ||
what about the younger lads? You were defeated narrowly. Possibly. | :19:12. | :19:15.
It was an absolute inspiration to play against someone of that | :19:15. | :19:25.
calibre. It is an absolute honour. Is it an honour because you got the | :19:25. | :19:32.
only goal in the defeat? I just happen to be in the right place at | :19:32. | :19:39.
the right time. I got one goal. It was not too bad. What was it like | :19:39. | :19:49.
to play against him? He is pretty decent. He is a big inspiration. It | :19:49. | :19:57.
was the teamwork that he created. It is a big inspiration. It is | :19:57. | :20:02.
something you can believe in. It makes you want to strive to do | :20:02. | :20:10.
better. Barry, these guys will not admit to idolising you, but clearly | :20:10. | :20:16.
it means a lot to them. They told me the idolise me a minute to go. | :20:16. | :20:21.
It is nice, this is my home club, I like coming back and helping do | :20:21. | :20:26.
what I can for the school and the club. They helped me a lot. | :20:26. | :20:32.
Anything I can do to help them makes me happy. I am glad they are | :20:32. | :20:42.
:20:42. | :20:43. | ||
playing hockey. They have a good team. I do not think it was 15-1. | :20:43. | :20:48.
Somebody has make us a picture of you at school. -- has given us a | :20:48. | :20:55.
picture. Back then, could you believe you would be going to the | :20:55. | :21:02.
Olympics? I do not think so. I never really looked too much ahead. | :21:03. | :21:08.
It was just fun, I enjoyed playing hockey. Then I started playing for | :21:08. | :21:15.
England and Great Britain. I did not dream of it. I took it in my | :21:15. | :21:19.
stride and enjoyed playing hockey. As long as they enjoy themselves, | :21:19. | :21:26.
they will go far. We hope you go as far as you think you can. Obviously | :21:26. | :21:32.
we got the bronze medal in the Euros. Preparations start in | :21:32. | :21:39.
earnest now. We are all behind you. I will let you into a little secret, | :21:39. | :21:47.
Barry Middleton thinks we can beat Australia. In every sport. We have | :21:47. | :21:54.
already done it at cricket sort maybe we can. At church organ is a | :21:54. | :21:58.
traditional British sound, but is not as common as it used to be. It | :21:58. | :22:05.
is estimated that half of churches do not have an organist. Some | :22:05. | :22:13.
congregations are even having to sing along to mobile phones. Church | :22:13. | :22:17.
leaders say it is becoming a problem, but they now hold that the | :22:17. | :22:27.
:22:27. | :22:37. | ||
new organ academy will help to It has been a long time since the | :22:37. | :22:41.
church organ was a popular instrument, but here in Yorkshire | :22:41. | :22:51.
:22:51. | :22:51. | ||
they are trying to change that. organist is like a conjuror. What | :22:51. | :22:54.
we do is make the effects of certain notes sound louder even | :22:54. | :22:59.
though they do not. This is the new organ academy at Harrow Minster. | :22:59. | :23:07.
They say it is the biggest one outside London. I estimate that the | :23:07. | :23:13.
one name two churches will have an organ but not an organist. -- 50 % | :23:13. | :23:20.
of churches. Here we have a wonderful instrument. A lot of | :23:20. | :23:24.
churches in Halifax and West Riding do not have an organist. The organ | :23:24. | :23:34.
fall silent. Neither of this Becker's churches has a regular | :23:34. | :23:36.
organist and sometimes the congregation have to sing along to | :23:36. | :23:43.
a mobile phone. It is not ideal but sometimes you have to do it. People | :23:43. | :23:49.
are not that happy. Anybody who wants to be an organist, they will | :23:49. | :23:56.
be loved and cherished. People revalue their work. So far, the | :23:56. | :24:00.
academy here has signed up 30 new pupils. It is a complicated | :24:00. | :24:07.
instrument to learn, but as this girl shows, even a child can master | :24:07. | :24:17.
:24:17. | :24:32. | ||
it. That was nice. Now the weather. The Harrogate Flower Show will be | :24:32. | :24:42.

You just interrupted our conversation! We were talking about | :25:34. | :25:39.
conversation! We were talking about the thunderstorm. Here are some | :25:39. | :25:47.
pictures to show you. This is a picture of Whitby. Robin Hood's Bay | :25:47. | :25:57.
:25:57. | :25:58. | ||
is looking nice. And here is Scarborough. Very nice indeed. We | :25:58. | :26:01.
have had some tremendous thunderstorms in the last couple of | :26:01. | :26:06.
hours. There is flooding in Harrogate. We got some in Leeds as | :26:06. | :26:13.
well. You can see how active they have been, pushing him from the | :26:13. | :26:21.
West heading for York. It will get a clobbering him the next hour. | :26:21. | :26:26.
Tomorrow will be sunny intervals with heavy showers. Low-pressure | :26:26. | :26:30.
will be in charge of the weather. The showers took some time to get | :26:30. | :26:35.
going, but at last they came in from the West. We have seen the | :26:35. | :26:39.
clearance across the Pennines, the sun is coming back out in Leeds. | :26:39. | :26:47.
The band of downpours is pushing east. Showers will try to get back | :26:47. | :26:51.
in from the West towards the end of the night. The temperature will be | :26:51. | :27:00.
down to nine or 10 degrees. The sun will rise in the morning. High- | :27:00. | :27:04.
water time is 7:24am. It will be bright and breezy tomorrow with | :27:04. | :27:09.
sunny intervals. There will be a risk of thunder. Could be some | :27:09. | :27:16.
local flooding. The heaviest of the shares will be in low western areas. | :27:16. | :27:22.
