Good evening, and welcome to Look North. | :00:48. | :00:51.
Parents have been keeping their children at home, as police | :00:51. | :00:55.
investigate allegations of a sex assault on a child at a school in | :00:55. | :00:58.
Sheffield. Greenlands Infant School reopened today, but only 40% of the | :00:58. | :01:01.
pupils returned. One person has been arrested and released on bail | :01:01. | :01:04.
in connection with the police inquiry. Some parents say they're | :01:04. | :01:07.
unhappy with the information they've been given by the school. | :01:07. | :01:17.
:01:17. | :01:17. | ||
Our reporter Emma Glasbey has the story. | :01:17. | :01:21.
There were some heated discussions at the gates this morning, as | :01:21. | :01:26.
Greenlands Infant School reopened. It soon became clear not all of the | :01:26. | :01:29.
children would be returning to class today. Greenlands Infant | :01:29. | :01:34.
School was closed earlier this week as police investigated claims of a | :01:34. | :01:39.
sex assault against a child here. A person has been arrested and bailed. | :01:39. | :01:45.
Today, all children were supposed to be back in classes. But some | :01:45. | :01:50.
parents decided to keep their children at home. Today, Sheffield | :01:50. | :01:54.
city council told us only 40% of the children at the school had | :01:54. | :02:02.
attended classes today. We had a great meeting, 150 parents turned | :02:02. | :02:09.
up. We decided not to give our children to this school. Within the | :02:09. | :02:14.
community, we want answers. school has failed to inform the | :02:14. | :02:20.
parents fully, to reassure them. The parents do not know what to do. | :02:20. | :02:26.
Police patrols continue around the school to offer reassurance to | :02:26. | :02:30.
concerned parents. Meanwhile it has been confirmed the head teacher is | :02:30. | :02:36.
working from home this week. We have been told the decision has | :02:36. | :02:41.
been taken because it was in the best interests of her well-being. | :02:41. | :02:51.
:02:51. | :03:03. | ||
Some parents are planning to keep their children at home tomorrow as | :03:03. | :03:10.
well. Next week is half-term, giving the community more term -- | :03:10. | :03:14.
time to consider the events of last week. A Bradford man, who was | :03:14. | :03:17.
kidnapped whilst visiting Pakistan, says he's lucky be alive, after he | :03:17. | :03:21.
was chained to an iron bed for 20 days by his captors. Malik Iqbal | :03:21. | :03:24.
says he still has nightmares, and will never visit the country again. | :03:24. | :03:28.
A local councillor in Bradford says he's concerned that cases like this | :03:28. | :03:38.
:03:38. | :03:40. | ||
one are on the increase. Spencer Stokes has been to meet Malik Iqbal. | :03:40. | :03:45.
Safely back in Bradford but Malik Iqbal it is still recovering from | :03:45. | :03:50.
his 20 day ordeal. Chains were tied to his legs fixing him to a bed | :03:50. | :03:58.
frame at a house. I did not think I would come out alive from the | :03:58. | :04:06.
situation. Because, these people, they are not human beings. They do | :04:06. | :04:13.
not value anybody's life. What they are after his money, or they will | :04:13. | :04:20.
take your life if you can't pay the ransom. He travelled with his | :04:20. | :04:25.
family in the summer. He was abducted while visiting a friend. | :04:26. | :04:30.
Blind folded, he endured three weeks in chains, subjected to daily | :04:30. | :04:35.
death threats. Thousands of people from Yorkshire go to Pakistani | :04:35. | :04:39.
every year. But the country is far from politically stable, so the | :04:39. | :04:43.
Foreign Office has issued a warning. The British Government says there | :04:43. | :04:49.
is a general terrorism risk across Pakistan with a particular risk of | :04:49. | :04:59.
:04:59. | :05:00. | ||
kidnapping in this particular city. Hardly reassuring words for anyone | :05:00. | :05:05.
considering a visit. But it is accepted that kidnappings are a | :05:05. | :05:11.
growing problem. I am afraid this is only the tip of the iceberg. | :05:11. | :05:14.
People in the past have approached me and said this has happened but | :05:14. | :05:22.
they are afraid of reporting this crime. The perception out there | :05:22. | :05:27.
within the community is a authorities in Pakistan and here do | :05:27. | :05:34.
not take any sort of action. family have helped to stump up the | :05:34. | :05:37.
15,000 his captors demanded. He plans to pay them back but he will | :05:38. | :05:43.
never go back to Pakistan, and suggests people stay away. I would | :05:43. | :05:48.
say to people considering taking their kids or going themselves to | :05:48. | :05:53.
Pakistan, I would say, never ever think about it. Because it can | :05:53. | :05:56.
happen to anybody. If it has happened to me, it can happen to | :05:56. | :05:59.
anybody. Malik Iqbal there, ending that | :05:59. | :06:02.
report from Spencer Stokes. Stay with us. | :06:02. | :06:05.
No longer open all hours. Despite the protests, Pontefract Hospital's | :06:05. | :06:15.
:06:15. | :06:17. | ||
A&E department will be closed at The city of York has been | :06:17. | :06:20.
celebrating the contribution that French air men made during the | :06:20. | :06:25.
Second World War. 2,500 French air and ground crew were based at | :06:25. | :06:28.
Elvington, and launched bombing raids on their own country, as well | :06:28. | :06:31.
as Germany from here. Today, a memorial was unveiled at York | :06:31. | :06:41.
:06:41. | :06:41. | ||
Minster in their honour, and 1,500 people attended the ceremony. Danny | :06:41. | :06:51.
:06:51. | :06:52. | ||
Carpenter is live in York. This has been a very significant day? | :06:52. | :06:56.
Yes, earned an important day not just for York but all of the | :06:56. | :07:01.
countries we still like to think of as the free world. Those at their | :07:01. | :07:06.
bases around York were not just populated by British personnel, but | :07:06. | :07:12.
by New Zealanders, Canadians, Australians and the French. Today | :07:12. | :07:18.
was their turn to be properly commemorated. | :07:18. | :07:23.
Out of the stunning blue they came, one of York's most spectacular fly- | :07:23. | :07:30.
past in years. The French and British aircraft were played -- | :07:30. | :07:35.
paying tribute to the French air men. Who had raced there lies | :07:35. | :07:40.
flying bombing missions. Losses were heavy, around half were killed. | :07:40. | :07:50.
:07:50. | :07:51. | ||
In York Minster today they were remembered, in English and French. | :07:51. | :07:57.
A memorial stone to the 200 French air men who died was given to York | :07:57. | :08:07.
:08:07. | :08:09. | ||
Minster. To have this memorial in the cathedral, it is there forever. | :08:09. | :08:19.
They are at peace now. Have there been any tears? Some. But, you know, | :08:19. | :08:24.
some are very hard men. They can cry if they want. Out in the | :08:24. | :08:29.
sunshine, the five French veterans who had travelled to York, gathered | :08:29. | :08:32.
with their AER cheeks and ambassador to watch 16 aircraft | :08:32. | :08:40.
overhead. While hundreds of Service personnel marched past in tribute. | :08:40. | :08:45.
It was a moving service, it is fantastic to see France and Britain | :08:45. | :08:49.
working together and remembering together what happened in the | :08:49. | :08:54.
Second World War. It is really important that it is celebrated | :08:54. | :08:57.
here today and it was lovely to see so many French people and English | :08:57. | :09:04.
people together. A lot of these people who gave their help at the | :09:04. | :09:09.
great risk of their life, like my father, were never recognised, they | :09:09. | :09:14.
didn't get decorations, they are totally forgotten. There were | :09:14. | :09:19.
hundreds of people like this. was a day when two countries came | :09:19. | :09:23.
together in York to remember a shared past and celebrate a united | :09:23. | :09:28.
future. Dwyer of they were in York, the | :09:28. | :09:31.
French air men became part of the fabric of the city and in a sense | :09:31. | :09:36.
they are now going to become part of the fabric of York Minster with | :09:36. | :09:41.
this memorial stone which marks an emotional bond which has been | :09:41. | :09:48.
remembered years on. For this was one of the most | :09:48. | :09:52.
complicated flypasts that has ever taken place in Yorkshire. We were | :09:52. | :10:02.
:10:02. | :10:07. | ||
lucky enough to have a bird's eye Whilst the parade and pageantry was | :10:07. | :10:12.
taking place at York Minster, a few miles away another formation was | :10:12. | :10:18.
about to happen. Over Yorkshire, 9 RAF aeroplanes were getting ready | :10:18. | :10:28.
:10:28. | :10:29. | ||
They went from Linton took Alvington, appropriately, the base | :10:29. | :10:37.
so many of the French were stationed during Second World War. | :10:37. | :10:47.
:10:47. | :11:13. | ||
20 minutes holding pattern, then The then it was back to base and | :11:13. | :11:23.
:11:23. | :11:28. | ||
Touchdown. And one for the album, a day to remember! | :11:28. | :11:35.
You obviously had a wonderful time. Are you back down to Earth yet? | :11:35. | :11:41.
Just about. I have to say it was an absolutely exhilarating experience, | :11:41. | :11:45.
one a will remember for the rest of my life. More important on this day | :11:45. | :11:50.
to remember the reason for that fly-past, the sacrifice of all of | :11:50. | :11:58.
those who fought and flu and died in the Second World War. | :11:58. | :12:01.
A former police detective has appeared in court charged with | :12:01. | :12:04.
murdering his partner, who was a policewoman from York. The body of | :12:05. | :12:08.
Detective Constable Heather Cooper, 33, was found by police in West | :12:08. | :12:11.
Sussex, on Sunday. Her partner, Peter Foster, 35, was remanded in | :12:11. | :12:13.
custody after an appearance at Worthing Magistrates Court. Heather | :12:13. | :12:17.
was a mother of two, who was on maternity leave from her job with | :12:17. | :12:23.
Surrey Police. 44 MPs have asked the Sun newspaper | :12:23. | :12:27.
to release all of its records of its coverage of the Hillsborough | :12:27. | :12:30.
football disaster. The Sun had blamed drunken fans, although the | :12:30. | :12:33.
official inquiry said it was the result of overcrowding after police | :12:33. | :12:36.
opened a gate. An e-petition demanding "full disclosure" from | :12:36. | :12:39.
the paper now has more than 24,000 signatures. The government has | :12:39. | :12:42.
agreed to disclose all Cabinet papers about the tragedy in which | :12:42. | :12:52.
:12:52. | :12:53. | ||
96 Liverpool supporters died. The latest figures show a 4% drop | :12:53. | :12:56.
in crime overall in Yorkshire. In South Yorkshire, the number of | :12:56. | :12:59.
crimes reported to police has dropped by 7%, compared to last | :12:59. | :13:02.
year. The force says it's the lowest for 20 years with | :13:02. | :13:12.
:13:12. | :13:12. | ||
significant falls in violent crime The A&E department at Pontefract | :13:12. | :13:16.
Hospital is to close at night from the end of the month. The proposal, | :13:16. | :13:19.
announced just last week, was ratified by the board of Mid | :13:19. | :13:23.
Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, despite a last ditch appeal from local MP | :13:23. | :13:26.
Yvette Cooper. She's branded the move a betrayal of promises made to | :13:26. | :13:29.
local people when the new hospital was planned. Here with the latest | :13:29. | :13:39.
:13:39. | :13:47. | ||
is our health correspondent Penny Board members were left in no doubt | :13:47. | :13:50.
about the strength of feeling as they met in at Wakefield this | :13:50. | :13:56.
morning. Last weekend, the bombshell that the accident and | :13:56. | :14:00.
emergency department needs to close because of staff shortages. The | :14:00. | :14:06.
board approved that move today despite an appeal. I urge you to | :14:06. | :14:12.
rethink this decision. It goes to the heart of the deep distrust | :14:12. | :14:21.
there is about the intentions of the board, particularly as we know. | :14:21. | :14:27.
The explanation given is that the Trust's three hospitals have nine | :14:27. | :14:33.
vacancies who staff any. All attempts at recruitment have failed. | :14:33. | :14:38.
Temporary staff have covered the situation, but those doctors leave | :14:38. | :14:45.
in 10 days's time. But for the loan at Pontefract resident on the board, | :14:45. | :14:55.
:14:55. | :14:55. | ||
that was not good enough. People will fill betrayed on this issue. - | :14:55. | :15:02.
- feel. Yvette Cooper said such a serious situation should have been | :15:02. | :15:09.
raised nationally and earlier. has been a difficult day. I didn't | :15:09. | :15:14.
come into the NHS are to restructure services. The board has | :15:14. | :15:18.
taken the decision purely on patient safety grounds. We don't | :15:18. | :15:21.
have enough doctors will stop we have reluctantly decided to make | :15:21. | :15:31.
:15:31. | :15:33. | ||
this change, and that this is not about money. -- enough doctors.. | :15:33. | :15:39.
Lord Lofthouse said this would never have happened on his watch. | :15:39. | :15:49.
:15:49. | :15:52. | ||
This campaign... I will not sit back. I will not sit back and | :15:52. | :16:02.
:16:02. | :16:05. | ||
allowed this. I'm -- I believe that these services are needed. | :16:05. | :16:09.
Before seven o'clock: Riding high - we catch up with the silver medal- | :16:09. | :16:19.
winning British Supermoto rider from Barnsley. | :16:19. | :16:25.
Join me later when I will have a story with a happy ending. Hello, | :16:25. | :16:35.
:16:35. | :16:36. | ||
Billy! Come-on! Sport now, and Sheffield United | :16:36. | :16:39.
were in League One action at Preston last night. The Blades were | :16:39. | :16:42.
desperate for a win after surrendering a two goal lead in the | :16:42. | :16:48.
Sheffield Derby on Sunday. Ian Bucknell has the story of a match | :16:48. | :16:57.
packed with goals. Sheffield United got off to a | :16:57. | :17:02.
flying start. Matt Phillips making his full debut took his time and | :17:02. | :17:12.
picked his spot. But Preston were bounced back into the match. The | :17:12. | :17:22.
:17:22. | :17:23. | ||
Blades were soon in front again. But, after the break, Preston once | :17:23. | :17:30.
more pulled level, this time from Ian issue. Now came the test of | :17:30. | :17:37.
character for Danny Wilson's men. Would this be another opportunity | :17:37. | :17:47.
:17:47. | :17:49. | ||
missed? This shot found its way through the Preston keeper. | :17:49. | :17:54.
Sheffield United secured the win, and got their season back on track. | :17:54. | :18:03.
The Blades go fifth in a League One, just two points behind. | :18:03. | :18:06.
Now, a couple of weeks ago, we featured Barnsley boy, James Addy, | :18:06. | :18:09.
who was on his way to represent Great Britain in the world team | :18:09. | :18:14.
Supermoto competition. And for those who don't follow the sport, | :18:14. | :18:19.
it's a mixture of track and off- road motorcycling. Well, the great | :18:19. | :18:25.
news is the British team came second at the World Championships. | :18:25. | :18:28.
James came into the studio earlier along with his dad, John, who also | :18:28. | :18:33.
happens to be his mechanic. We asked James how much of an | :18:34. | :18:41.
achievement second place was. was the first time I had done it. I | :18:42. | :18:45.
have never had that much pressure in my life before, but it meant a | :18:46. | :18:50.
lot. I went into the final race knowing we could finish on the | :18:50. | :19:00.
podium. That is all we wanted to do. Not munch champagne on a podium, | :19:00. | :19:07.
though, James! -- not much champagne. Let me introduce John, | :19:07. | :19:16.
the man behind the throne. It was the hardest thing I have ever been | :19:17. | :19:23.
up against. It was difficult. The first thing I said to him was, why | :19:23. | :19:30.
do you do that? It is suffering what he went through. We can see | :19:30. | :19:37.
you at work on the bike, while he stand and watch us. Our use of | :19:37. | :19:47.
funding? Or do you have sponsors? We have got sponsors. But they only | :19:47. | :19:57.
:19:57. | :19:57. | ||
give us the cost. James, you told me a secret before we we'll do this | :19:57. | :20:02.
be Sten but actually, it was your dad who liked it more than you. -- | :20:02. | :20:12.
:20:12. | :20:18. | ||
we wield. My dad farm's most of it! Do you ever fall out? -- My dad of | :20:18. | :20:28.
:20:28. | :20:30. | ||
funds. Is this a triathlon but motor riding? -- for motor riding? | :20:30. | :20:40.
:20:40. | :20:40. | ||
A little bit. I noticed a few scratches. Do you worry when you | :20:40. | :20:46.
see him going round at breakneck speed? I worry about how much it is | :20:46. | :20:55.
going to cost! You told me you have never seen the start of a race, | :20:55. | :20:59.
because until they get past that first corner, you don't know if he | :20:59. | :21:08.
is all right. That is right. That is the worrying part about it. When | :21:08. | :21:14.
you have got 30 riders all going into the same bend, it is very | :21:14. | :21:21.
worrying for a dad. Second place, can you improve on that? Hopefully. | :21:21. | :21:26.
Hopefully I will get invited to do it next here. The team was very | :21:27. | :21:33.
good this here. Hopefully, next year I will be first. How much is | :21:33. | :21:43.
:21:43. | :21:53. | ||
this worth? About 10,000. Thank you for bringing him and! -- him | :21:53. | :22:00.
The latest team to sign up to use Yorkshire as a base ahead of next | :22:00. | :22:02.
year's Olympics has been announced. The Russian diving team, which | :22:02. | :22:05.
recently finished second in the medal table at the World | :22:05. | :22:10.
Championships, will be based in Leeds. Today they held the first of | :22:10. | :22:20.
:22:20. | :22:23. | ||
their training camps at the John Charles Sports Centre. We decided | :22:23. | :22:30.
to start preparations earlier. This is the first step. We are here, in | :22:30. | :22:40.
:22:40. | :22:40. | ||
Great Britain. We will be here in February, and then for the Olympic | :22:40. | :22:50.
:22:50. | :22:52. | ||
Games. We are not strangers civil stop -- we are not strangers here. | :22:52. | :22:55.
Now, here's a story with a happy ending. Remember the pygmy goats | :22:55. | :22:58.
that we featured seven weeks ago when they were stolen from their | :22:58. | :23:07.
pen at the York Maize Maze? Well, the good news is they have all | :23:07. | :23:11.
turned up, just slightly worse for wear. Ian White has been to see | :23:11. | :23:19.
them. It is a pleasure to introduce you | :23:19. | :23:25.
to these goats. There are backward their mum after a seven-week ordeal. | :23:25. | :23:34.
They were snatched by thieves. -- back with. The police rang up. They | :23:34. | :23:44.
said, I think I have got your goads! I'd describe them. -- your | :23:44. | :23:48.
goats. The golds were found wandering close to fields near in | :23:48. | :23:56.
industrial estate -- the goats. These goads but in good shape | :23:56. | :24:06.

despite their ordeal. -- these goat's. We tried to build him up a | :24:13. | :24:23.

little bit, they are undernourished. They have come round today. | :24:24. | :24:28.
cried for nearly a week when her kids were taken, but now, this | :24:28. | :24:36.
really is and bowled good's tale with a happy ending. -- really is | :24:36. | :24:46.

an old goat's. I am glad they are back. | :24:47. | :24:52.
Why did they spend all that money on the department then to close it? | :24:52. | :25:02.
:25:02. | :25:26. | ||
Look at Alastair's picture. Look at that frost! He wanted me to show it | :25:26. | :25:35.
tonight, just in case anyone is at doubting. Well done, Alastair. And | :25:35. | :25:42.
here is a second picture. This is in Scarborough. Keep the pictures | :25:42. | :25:52.

coming in. I have also written about my thoughts. Go to the | :25:54. | :26:04.
website. There is a lot of cloud compared to today. But tomorrow | :26:04. | :26:10.
afternoon should brighten up. The breeze will come in from the south | :26:10. | :26:16.
or south-west in the next few days, so Saturday could see temperatures | :26:16. | :26:21.
of 16 Celsius. That would be very pleasant. Last night, we got down | :26:21. | :26:29.
to minus two. The cloud is now rushing in from the West, and | :26:29. | :26:35.
before long, but ensure there will be a little patchy rain. -- I am | :26:35. | :26:43.
sure. Eastern and southern parts of our region should be dry tonight. | :26:43. | :26:53.
:26:53. | :26:54. | ||
We will seek temperatures down to six Celsius. The Sun will rise at | :26:54. | :26:59.
7:45am. A fairly cloudy start, damp in places especially over the | :26:59. | :27:03.
Pennines. That all become confined to the northern part of our area. | :27:03. | :27:10.
Elsewhere, a lot of cloud, but the winds will break that up. There | :27:10. | :27:14.
will be sunshine especially for eastern parts of our region. | :27:14. | :27:24. |
