Welcome to Friday's Look North. If bad news for jobs in Yorkshire. | :00:11. | :00:15.
Silent Night plans to close its factory in Batley with 200 jobs set | :00:15. | :00:19.
to go. Will the line at the factory in a moment. | :00:19. | :00:21.
Cracking down on cable theft, thieves are warned they could have | :00:21. | :00:26.
their cars crushed like this if they are caught selling stolen | :00:26. | :00:33.
metal for scrap. And Yorkshire marked the start of | :00:33. | :00:38.
this year's poppy appeal with a parade in Leeds. | :00:38. | :00:43.
Join me for my weather. It has been a lovely day today, warm sunshine | :00:43. | :00:53.
:00:53. | :00:58. | ||
this weekend. I will have the full Good evening. Bad news on a Friday | :00:58. | :01:03.
night, Britain's biggest bed company has announced it will close | :01:03. | :01:07.
its factory in West Yorkshire with the loss of more than 200 jobs. | :01:07. | :01:10.
Both signed at night said the move is necessary because sales of beds | :01:10. | :01:14.
have fallen dramatically because of the tough -- tough economic climate. | :01:14. | :01:19.
Our correspondent joins us now from outside the factory in Batley. If a | :01:19. | :01:24.
sense of shock levels of what is the latest? | :01:24. | :01:30.
I am afraid that the factory as it is known, formerly Silent Night, | :01:30. | :01:36.
his silence tonight. Earlier today, management convened a meeting of | :01:36. | :01:39.
the 200 workers and told them the factory would be closing. | :01:39. | :01:44.
Manufacturing is moving to the company's headquarters in the East | :01:44. | :01:49.
Lancashire area. 600 people work there, and there will be 100 jobs | :01:49. | :01:54.
added there. But that is no comfort to the people here. | :01:54. | :01:58.
This leaves Silent Night a very tight into the retail centre, which | :01:58. | :02:01.
is being hammered to a certain extent. What can you tell us about | :02:01. | :02:06.
the company itself? They claim to be the UK's biggest | :02:06. | :02:11.
manufacturer of beds. They have been going for 60 years, and have | :02:12. | :02:17.
manufactured 40 million beds. That amounts to 1800 a day. That is one | :02:17. | :02:22.
5th of the nation's supply of beds. But the bottom has been starting to | :02:22. | :02:26.
come out of the market in the last few years of the recession, leading | :02:26. | :02:31.
to today's very bad news. It is a mass of the tough time, and | :02:31. | :02:36.
we have not taken this decision lightly. We cannot see in the | :02:36. | :02:40.
marketplace for the next few years, that the demand will come back to | :02:40. | :02:42.
the levels to make it economic sensible to keep these factories | :02:42. | :02:46.
open. Unfortunately, these announcements | :02:46. | :02:50.
tend to come from corporate organisations on a Friday afternoon, | :02:50. | :02:54.
so it is often difficult to gauge wrecked -- gauge reaction. What | :02:54. | :03:00.
have local people been saying?. Batley, like a lot of thought | :03:00. | :03:06.
Yorkshire towns, is struggling for jobs in the face of this recession. | :03:06. | :03:11.
-- Yorkshire towns. Everyone was depressed to hear the news that | :03:11. | :03:14.
silence night will be leaving the town. The it is devastating for the | :03:14. | :03:17.
town. There will be no shops left. | :03:17. | :03:21.
It is the same everywhere. We thought we were coming out of | :03:21. | :03:28.
recession, but we are going down. There are no jobs here anyway. | :03:28. | :03:34.
Another one bites the dust. There was a threat to this factory | :03:34. | :03:39.
originally in April, that was averted, and talks will now begin | :03:39. | :03:42.
about the closing down of the factory, but if they were averted | :03:42. | :03:46.
in April, tonight is the beginning of the end for Silent Night in | :03:46. | :03:52.
Batley. Thank you very much. | :03:52. | :03:55.
Our other main story, Transport Police in Yorkshire have announced | :03:55. | :04:00.
a campaign to crack down on dealers who buy stolen metal. As we know, | :04:00. | :04:04.
copper theft on the railways leads to tens of thousands of hours of | :04:04. | :04:08.
delays to passengers every single year, and it is getting worse. | :04:08. | :04:13.
Yorkshire is a hot spot. Here is an idea of the scale of the problem. | :04:13. | :04:17.
11 Metal theft crimes are committed in West Yorkshire every single day. | :04:17. | :04:21.
Dealing with that problem cost the authorities here to hide and | :04:21. | :04:25.
50,000 every month. And it is linked to the cost of copper, which | :04:25. | :04:30.
this week alone rose by another 14%. That is in line to be the biggest | :04:30. | :04:35.
weekly gain in three years. Today, operations have started to try and | :04:35. | :04:45.
:04:45. | :04:45. | ||
deal with the problem. In hot pursuit of the thieves. This | :04:45. | :04:50.
causes huge delays to passengers and big costs to Network Rail. But | :04:50. | :04:53.
the thieves here are rounded up and arrested. | :04:53. | :04:55.
Of the results are not so impressive every time, but they | :04:55. | :05:00.
said they are getting a grip on the problem, and the courts are handing | :05:00. | :05:02.
down stiff sentences. Him is one story. | :05:03. | :05:08.
He got no more than 20 scrap-metal -- scrap value for the cable he | :05:08. | :05:13.
sold. He is now serving a 12 month sentence, he will be spending his | :05:13. | :05:20.
Christmas in prison, and he was shocked when he got the sentence. | :05:20. | :05:25.
Today's of action involved every police force in the region. Scrap- | :05:25. | :05:29.
metal dealers were checked for any trace of illegal material. Officers | :05:29. | :05:33.
have been checking homes in known areas. Network Rail is also | :05:33. | :05:37.
investing time and money in the deterrent. | :05:37. | :05:44.
The value of the copper cables is minuscule in comparison to the | :05:44. | :05:49.
disruption, and the thousands of pounds it has cost us. In the | :05:49. | :05:54.
north-east it has cost Network Rail over 3 million this year. | :05:55. | :05:57.
Trackside patrols are also being stepped up in areas that the | :05:57. | :06:01.
thieves have repeatedly targeted. It cost time and money, but every | :06:01. | :06:05.
time these cable is taken out, Network Rail has to spend thousands | :06:05. | :06:11.
replace it and then testing it. The problem is, it is impossible to | :06:11. | :06:15.
police or the railway all the time, and that is why the time -- the | :06:15. | :06:20.
focus is on target in merchant. The message is simple, even if you | :06:20. | :06:23.
steal the cable, you will not be able to get rid of it for money. | :06:23. | :06:29.
This is a another punishment, a cable FIFA's than being crushed. He | :06:29. | :06:33.
has already be in jail. When he gets a, he will have no transport. | :06:33. | :06:38.
-- he is already in jail. I think people will be happy to see | :06:38. | :06:43.
that. Let us tour to Yvette Cooper, who is also MP for Pontefract and | :06:43. | :06:46.
Castleford. It is time to get tough, isn't it? | :06:46. | :06:51.
It is. You are seeing what is almost becoming an epidemic with | :06:51. | :06:56.
people having power cuts, who say they lost the breast screening unit | :06:56. | :07:00.
in Castleford because the power cut that regret power units have been | :07:00. | :07:03.
stolen. We also had a terrible explosion. | :07:03. | :07:09.
We have got that picture here. How anybody survived this is a miracle. | :07:09. | :07:15.
The it is a miracle no one was killed, and that was the theft of | :07:15. | :07:19.
power cables ending up causing a gas leak which led to an explosion, | :07:19. | :07:24.
sewer shows just how dangerous this I think the police action is great, | :07:24. | :07:30.
it is really welcome that the police are taking action. I think | :07:30. | :07:34.
we need government action as well, because we have to have stronger | :07:34. | :07:40.
laws to clamp down on this, make it harder to trade in stolen metal. | :07:40. | :07:46.
It is quite a big cash industry. We want to put an end to it, and only | :07:46. | :07:49.
allow things for metal and I suspect other things as well to be | :07:49. | :07:53.
paid in a traceable way. I think there is a series of things | :07:54. | :07:58.
you could do. We could license scrap-metal dealers, we could | :07:58. | :08:01.
require people to have proof of ID when they are going to sell metal. | :08:01. | :08:06.
You have to do that in other areas where there has been the need to | :08:06. | :08:10.
crack down on crime, and this is organised crime as well. If so I | :08:10. | :08:15.
think you do need serious action. You have got his support legitimate | :08:15. | :08:19.
trade, you have got to make sure that recycling can take place, but | :08:19. | :08:24.
you have also got to have these tougher arrangements. Some other | :08:24. | :08:27.
countries are looking at going passionless completely, so we | :08:27. | :08:35.
should look at this as well. The -- without cash. | :08:35. | :08:39.
If it is stolen, and there is no cash, your bill to find out where | :08:39. | :08:42.
the people are from. And that's right. | :08:42. | :08:46.
This is supported now by churches, by many Neighbourhood Watch | :08:46. | :08:49.
organisations, by the police across the country, because they are all | :08:49. | :08:53.
saying the laws we have got, they are decade out of date. They cannot | :08:53. | :08:58.
keep up with the best -- big increase in metal prices. People | :08:58. | :09:03.
are having their lives affected. We know times are tough, but there | :09:03. | :09:07.
is no excuse but taking somebody else's property and putting lives | :09:07. | :09:11.
in danger. Added is so dangerous. Sometimes | :09:11. | :09:15.
people can be stealing metal which in itself isn't very -- isn't worth | :09:15. | :09:20.
very much, but they do a lot of damage. The value of damage they | :09:20. | :09:27.
cause can be terrible, certainly for the families in Castleford. | :09:27. | :09:31.
Thank you very much. Coming up later on this programme, | :09:31. | :09:36.
locked up in Thailand. Why a teacher from Chesterfield spent 30 | :09:36. | :09:45.
Researchers in Leeds have found that taking aspirin can reduce the | :09:45. | :09:49.
risk of bowel cancer in people with a family history of the disease. A | :09:49. | :09:52.
study of more than 800 patients concluded that taking regular doses | :09:52. | :09:58.
of aspirin for several years can lead to a 60% reduction in cancers | :09:58. | :10:02.
developing a hereditary cancer. However, researchers at Leeds | :10:02. | :10:05.
University are warning people to consult their doctor before taking | :10:05. | :10:09.
prolonged doses of aspirin, as it is known to increase the risk of | :10:09. | :10:13.
stomach ulcers. A report to Sheffield City Council | :10:13. | :10:18.
has revealed major differences in life expectancy across the city. | :10:18. | :10:22.
The document, put together by the NHS, shows those living in wealthy | :10:22. | :10:26.
areas can expect to live eight years longer than those in poorer | :10:26. | :10:30.
communities. The Director of Public Health in the city has told the BBC | :10:30. | :10:35.
that is unacceptable. The report also shows men's health in the City | :10:35. | :10:41.
is improving, but at a slower help than that of women. -- a slower | :10:41. | :10:46.
rate than that of women. The Royal British Legion has today | :10:46. | :10:51.
announced his poppy appeal. It is his 90th anniversary. It aims to | :10:51. | :10:55.
raise tens of millions of pounds for servicemen and women and their | :10:55. | :11:00.
families. Our poppies gone tomorrow. Veterans | :11:00. | :11:04.
and relatives of soldiers killed in Afghanistan attended today's | :11:04. | :11:07.
ceremony for South and West Yorkshire. The event in Leeds | :11:07. | :11:17.

The scene then shifted to the arcade, for the handing out of the | :11:46. | :11:51.
first poppies to three special recipients. The first, her son was | :11:51. | :11:56.

son, Jordan, an aspiring soldier himself, a member of the Combined | :12:02. | :12:07.
Cadet Force. I want to remember not just my son, | :12:07. | :12:14.
but all the other soldiers. It is all brilliant back like it is | :12:14. | :12:19.
the first day, and then we have got to start again. -- it is all | :12:19. | :12:27.
bringing it back. Also receiving poppies were this | :12:27. | :12:31.
90-year-old Air Force veteran, as this naval nurse, who served twice | :12:31. | :12:37.
in Afghanistan, and she is not yet It was a great honour and a great | :12:37. | :12:44.
surprise to come and to take part in the ceremony. To have the first | :12:44. | :12:47.
Poppy pinned on me was really special. It is something I shall | :12:47. | :12:51.
never forget. I am delighted for them to have | :12:51. | :12:56.
invited me up here, and just to accept this not just for myself but | :12:56. | :13:01.
for all the other members whether they might be. | :13:02. | :13:06.
The Royal British Legion spends 1.4 million a week looking after | :13:06. | :13:10.
ex service personnel. Costs are rising. The war in Afghanistan | :13:10. | :13:15.
means they need every penny for a new generation of veterans as the | :13:15. | :13:25.

High have a Chesterfield woman has told Look North about her ordeal | :13:27. | :13:31.
being held at Bangkok Airport for two days. Francesca Salt was kept | :13:31. | :13:36.
in a detention cell by officials because one page was missing from | :13:36. | :13:40.
her passport. She is using her story as a warning to other | :13:40. | :13:50.
:13:50. | :13:51. | ||
travellers. Everything is intact. Have one | :13:51. | :13:56.
missing page, but it turned the end of a dream trip into a nightmare. | :13:56. | :14:01.
Francesca believed her passport was tampered within Thailand, landing | :14:01. | :14:05.
her in trouble with immigration on her way home to Chesterfield. The | :14:05. | :14:09.
23-year-old spent two days in a detention cell beneath Bangkok | :14:09. | :14:18.
Airport. If I could not sit down. could not sleep. My mum could not | :14:18. | :14:22.
understand what I was saying on the phone because I was hysterical. I | :14:22. | :14:28.
had to pay for my detention centre room, food, because the food they | :14:28. | :14:32.
provided was inedible. I got really ill from the water they gave me and | :14:32. | :14:41.
I got a nasty summer but. It was awful. In the UK, Francesca's | :14:41. | :14:47.
family went to their MP to get help. It is terrifying for the family. We | :14:47. | :14:52.
try to make sure they understood what the situation was. We try to | :14:52. | :14:56.
give them support from the Government. Eventually, Francesca | :14:56. | :15:00.
was march through the airport and put on a flight back to the UK, but | :15:00. | :15:04.
her experience left her shaken and she wants to warn other travellers. | :15:04. | :15:10.
In Thailand, it is a beautiful place, and people are great, but if | :15:10. | :15:14.
you ever coming to a problem with your passport, do not try to travel | :15:14. | :15:22.
anywhere. Go to the embassy, and they are great and will help you. | :15:22. | :15:26.
Francesca feels her trip of a lifetime has been tainted. She will | :15:26. | :15:34.
not go back to Thailand. It is unlikely she would be allowed back. | :15:34. | :15:43.
Before 7 o'clock tonight, countryside complained: One year of | :15:43. | :15:50.
emotion and drama in the Peak District. | :15:50. | :15:53.
And Huddersfield Town open the doors for half term as the team | :15:53. | :16:01.
tries to extend its 40 game unbeaten run. | :16:01. | :16:08.
I would not know a 5 million table if I saw one. But this one looks | :16:08. | :16:15.
quite expensive. It is a Thomas Chippendale table, stolen in a rate | :16:15. | :16:18.
on a North Yorkshire stately home. It has been recovered and returned | :16:18. | :16:24.
to his rightful owner. I'm surprised you are not on the | :16:24. | :16:28.
suspect list. The table is set to have international historic | :16:28. | :16:33.
significance and it went missing from Newby Hall near Ripon two | :16:33. | :16:38.
years ago. It was found among stay Hall of valuable antiques. | :16:38. | :16:43.
The Newby Hall, the tourist attraction in North Yorkshire, | :16:43. | :16:47.
which in June 2009 suffered a burglary. The East at a table made | :16:47. | :16:54.
for the house in 1775 by Thomas Chippendale. Two years later, after | :16:54. | :17:02.
it -- extensive investigation, the table has been recovered. William | :17:02. | :17:04.
Weddell in the 17th and he's commissioned this table to sit in | :17:04. | :17:13.
his room. It is a fabulous piece of work. The detail is stupendous. | :17:13. | :17:22.
did you expect to get it back? know. When you lose something, you | :17:22. | :17:26.
expected to be gone forever, but the police were confident. | :17:26. | :17:30.
thieves got in after dark breaking into a ground-floor window. The | :17:30. | :17:35.
table was the only thing the thieves took. They made off in a | :17:35. | :17:41.
4x4 towards Ripon. It was eventually recovered in a garage in | :17:41. | :17:47.
South Yorkshire. The crime squad near Leeds is now working on an | :17:47. | :17:51.
investigation involving thefts from 92 stately homes nationally | :17:52. | :17:58.
together with related drug deals. Simply, whether it is antiques, | :17:58. | :18:03.
drugs, antiques in order to fuel drug supply, I would not want to | :18:03. | :18:07.
get into too much conjecture about this particular case, but we are | :18:07. | :18:11.
dealing with organised criminals with sophisticated operations. | :18:11. | :18:14.
men have been arrested in connection with the theft of the | :18:14. | :18:21.
Pembroke table. Security measures at Newby Hall have been increased. | :18:21. | :18:28.
My father is not alive to know what it's -- that it is back. Half good | :18:28. | :18:33.
to see it back in safe hands. A fly-on-the-wall documentary has | :18:33. | :18:36.
captured the passion, drama and emotion surrounding a debate which | :18:36. | :18:41.
is raging in the Peak District. Film maker Richard Macer has spent | :18:41. | :18:44.
one year following villages determined to get off-roaders | :18:44. | :18:48.
banned from riding their 4x4s and trail bikes along the road will | :18:48. | :18:55.
byways and highways. The duty of the Peak District is | :18:55. | :19:01.
breathtaking. It is home to 40,000 people and enjoyed by millions of | :19:01. | :19:06.
tourists every year. The serenity of the scenery does not always | :19:06. | :19:12.
reflects real life here. He nearly knocked me down! There is a | :19:12. | :19:19.
conflict. Villagers want to protect peace and off-roaders want to drive | :19:19. | :19:24.
their 4x4s and trail bikes across the challenging terrain. What is | :19:24. | :19:31.
your view about the use of the green lanes for off-road vehicles? | :19:31. | :19:35.
Film-maker Richard Macer spent one year making a documentary to get to | :19:35. | :19:40.
the heart of the debate. Of raiders are legally entitled to drive the | :19:40. | :19:45.
byways, but local residents in Great Longstone want the law | :19:45. | :19:55.
changed to get them back. -- band. Your activity destroys the pleasure | :19:55. | :19:59.

something completely different from what I normally do. It is a bit of | :22:34. | :22:42.

In football, it has been a memorable season for Huddersfield | :23:21. | :23:25.
Town. They have set a new club record with a 15 match unbeaten | :23:25. | :23:31.
start in League One. The numbers were high as half term became half- | :23:31. | :23:41.
time. The team are preparing for a trip south this weekend. | :23:41. | :23:46.
A even on a rainy none match-day, Huddersfield Town supporters were | :23:46. | :23:52.
at their stadium this week cheering on their team. Ahead of tomorrow's | :23:52. | :23:56.
match at The Oval, but is still open the doors for half term to a | :23:56. | :24:01.
sound of a flurry of autograph requests. They are the best team in | :24:01. | :24:11.
:24:11. | :24:13. | ||
the world. They are good people. We are cousins. We all support them. | :24:14. | :24:18.
It is a great atmosphere. They love coming. They have spent all my | :24:18. | :24:22.
money at the shop! He it is a rare chance to watch their heroes | :24:22. | :24:28.
training. Jordan Rhodes is one of the most prolific strikers at the | :24:29. | :24:38.
moment. He has caught many people's eyes. I distance myself from these | :24:38. | :24:42.
things and she just turn up for training every day. I focus on the | :24:42. | :24:49.
task in hand and work as hard as I can. Speaking to my friends and | :24:49. | :24:56.
family of the road, they are always asking how Jordan is doing. He has | :24:56. | :25:00.
been magnificent. If anyone deserves to get called up, it is | :25:00. | :25:06.
him. Even manager Lee Clark has confirmed he will not be applying | :25:07. | :25:11.
to replace Sven-Goran Eriksson this week. It is 40 matches unbeaten, | :25:11. | :25:17.
but the numbers that really matter are their place in League One. They | :25:17. | :25:20.
have the infrastructure for the Championship, to say nothing of | :25:20. | :25:24.
those fans. Let us hope they maintain that | :25:25. | :25:34.
