Good evening and welcome to Look North. | :00:04. | :00:08.
Yorkshire's top stories tonight: The tragic deaths of a West | :00:08. | :00:16.
Yorkshire family. Friends struggle to understand the murders in Pudsey. | :00:16. | :00:21.
Such beautiful little boys, both of them. I can't imagine what has | :00:21. | :00:24.
happened, I just can't. I really can't. | :00:24. | :00:28.
Also making headlines this evening: The trains now arriving in | :00:28. | :00:31.
Yorkshire to ease overcrowding. But are they enough to keep track with | :00:31. | :00:39.
And It's A Knockout is back. Stuart Hall puts the Yorkshire champions | :00:39. | :00:49.
through their paces again, 35 years A wet and windy night to come which | :00:49. | :00:52.
sets us up for a very disturbed week of weather across Yorkshire. | :00:52. | :01:02.
:01:02. | :01:06. | ||
Good evening, thank you for joining Tonight, police have confirmed | :01:06. | :01:09.
they're not looking for anyone else after the bodies of four members of | :01:09. | :01:12.
a family were discovered at their home at Pudsey, near Leeds. | :01:12. | :01:15.
Police had been called yesterday evening to the house in Sheridan | :01:15. | :01:19.
Way, where they found the family - two adults and two children - in | :01:19. | :01:22.
the bedroom. It's being treated as a murder and suicide investigation. | :01:22. | :01:25.
Our crime correspondent John Cundy's in Pudsey. A terrible thing | :01:25. | :01:33.
to happen, John. It is. It would be dreadful at any | :01:33. | :01:37.
time of year but can you imagine it in the run-up to Christmas? A young | :01:37. | :01:40.
family who should have been looking forward to Christmas and then just | :01:40. | :01:46.
a few weeks ago, a nine-year-old Ben Smith seen here raising money | :01:46. | :01:50.
at his local school in Pudsey for Children In Need, truly tragic. The | :01:50. | :01:54.
early stages of the investigation were hampered last night by fears | :01:54. | :01:57.
that there may have been a tragic case of carbon monoxide poisoning | :01:57. | :02:00.
and police were hesitant about going into the house but the grim | :02:01. | :02:06.
reality today is it was no accident, it is a case of murder. | :02:06. | :02:10.
The bedroom window of a suburban house, police alerted by concerned | :02:10. | :02:15.
family members found the bodies of shop fitting designer Richard Smith, | :02:15. | :02:23.
his wife Clare, both aged in their thirties, and their two sons, Ben, | :02:23. | :02:27.
aged nine and Aaron, aged just one. There were signs of a slow-burning | :02:27. | :02:32.
fire in the room. Throughout the day, flowers have been laid and | :02:32. | :02:35.
tearful tributes have been spoken of the spot where police had sealed | :02:35. | :02:41.
off the murder scene. I don't want to say any more. They were | :02:41. | :02:45.
godparents to my little boy. What were the family like? A lovely. | :02:45. | :02:49.
Such beautiful little boys, both of them. I can't imagine what has made | :02:49. | :02:55.
this happen, I just can't. I really can't. All we know is they were | :02:55. | :03:00.
lovely family, lovely two kids and we are in shock, and Surrey. I knew | :03:00. | :03:06.
them from school and seeing them, I would bring the children to school | :03:06. | :03:11.
and things, it is so horrible to know that not just the parents but | :03:11. | :03:15.
the children have lost their lives. This afternoon, the sombre side of | :03:15. | :03:18.
the little boys and their parents' bodies being driven away -- sombre | :03:18. | :03:23.
sight. Inquiries are continuing today and I can confirm that this | :03:23. | :03:28.
is a murder investigation, but at this stage, we are not seeking | :03:28. | :03:35.
anybody else in connection with the incident. Nine-year-old Ben Smith's | :03:35. | :03:37.
School in place back at the local cricket club where the family spent | :03:37. | :03:42.
many days in the summer. I think these things are always horrible, | :03:42. | :03:45.
but when they happen at this time of the year, they seem to be | :03:45. | :03:49.
especially bad, so there is a great deal of sympathy for all of them. | :03:50. | :03:53.
The tragic family had lived in this road for only a few months, but | :03:53. | :03:58.
tonight, one floral tribute echoed the thoughts of a shocked community. | :03:58. | :04:04.
Why? Some of those messages were truly | :04:04. | :04:08.
poignant of, a typical example, "you were such a beautiful family, | :04:08. | :04:13.
we can't believe you have all gone.". | :04:13. | :04:17.
Indeed it is and that is the question everybody is all asking. | :04:17. | :04:21.
Recently, we have managed to speak to a family member, haven't we? | :04:21. | :04:26.
Yes, we have, a cousin of Richard Smith than he said this a few | :04:26. | :04:33.
moments ago. -- banned. They were the perfect family. | :04:33. | :04:37.
the suggestion that three family members had been murdered and the | :04:37. | :04:41.
4th face suicide, can you comprehend that? No and I don't | :04:41. | :04:46.
believe it for a minute. Aura will find it very hard to believe. -- or | :04:46. | :04:51.
I will. It the big questions are not only wide but how did the three | :04:51. | :04:54.
members of the Smith family die -- wife. The place would be able to | :04:54. | :04:58.
tell us more until they get the results of the post mortem, we may | :04:58. | :05:03.
hear more tomorrow. We will obviously be keeping you up | :05:03. | :05:09.
to date with this story, and on a late bulletin at 10:25pm we will be | :05:09. | :05:12.
live again from the scene, with the very latest as the police | :05:12. | :05:16.
investigation continues. Next tonight, commuters on some of | :05:16. | :05:18.
the country's most overcrowded train services are being told | :05:18. | :05:21.
things will get better. Northern Rail, which runs services across | :05:21. | :05:26.
Yorkshire and beyond, added 50 carriages to its fleet this morning. | :05:26. | :05:30.
They'll be used mostly on peak hour trains in and out of Leeds. But | :05:30. | :05:33.
with passenger numbers up 40%, campaigners say the news is good - | :05:33. | :05:41.
but not good enough, as Alan Whitehouse reports. | :05:41. | :05:45.
The economy might be in trouble but rail passenger numbers just won't | :05:45. | :05:49.
stop growing. The problem is that until now, the number of carriages | :05:49. | :05:54.
hasn't been. So it is little surprise that today's announcement | :05:54. | :05:58.
has been welcomed by Northern Rail commuters. It is certainly | :05:58. | :06:01.
overcrowded on the trains, it is definitely a good move. I would | :06:01. | :06:05.
like to see a few more operators Dillard. I am not a frequent rail | :06:05. | :06:10.
user, but it is a good idea. There is a definite shortage of capacity | :06:10. | :06:16.
on most of the lines around here. We need more carriages and more and | :06:16. | :06:20.
more people are using the trains. Overcrowding has been an issue | :06:20. | :06:24.
almost since Northern Rail took over in 2004. It crops up as a | :06:24. | :06:27.
passenger complaint time at the gate and no wonder, because | :06:27. | :06:31.
passenger numbers have gone up by 40%, defying all the predictions | :06:31. | :06:35.
that commuting would decline. Welcome as they are, officials | :06:35. | :06:39.
admit the new carriages would solve all problems. Clearly with the | :06:39. | :06:44.
rising demand of 40% more in just seven years, if that continues we | :06:44. | :06:48.
will have to work really hard with our partners how we can improve the | :06:48. | :06:52.
capacity of the second half of this decade. But it does mean that as | :06:52. | :06:55.
from today, one in five of all peak train services will have more | :06:55. | :07:00.
coaches, and some lines, like the Skipton and Ilkley routes, will see | :07:01. | :07:06.
more peak-time trains. The new carriages will add over 800,000 | :07:06. | :07:09.
four seat per year. But according to some people, Yorkshire's | :07:09. | :07:14.
commuters are still being changed - - short changed. Back in 2008, the | :07:14. | :07:21.
North needed 182 extra carriages to ease overcrowding. Fast forward AKA | :07:21. | :07:25.
this year and even with this additional fleet, we have had just | :07:25. | :07:30.
60, a third of what was needed. Northern Rail is now carrying 88 | :07:30. | :07:34.
million passengers every year, but they are often using outdated | :07:34. | :07:38.
trains cast off from other parts of the network. There is a growing | :07:38. | :07:43.
realisation that something more needs to be done. | :07:43. | :07:45.
Joining us now outside Wakefield's Westgate station is Chris Hyomes, a | :07:45. | :07:52.
campaigner for better rail services. Then queue for joining us. Extra | :07:52. | :07:56.
carriages, you must be happy with this news -- thank you for joining | :07:56. | :08:02.
us? We are very happy with this news. We have seen a 40% increase | :08:02. | :08:09.
in passenger numbers over the last seven years, so it is very good | :08:09. | :08:12.
news and had we seen another 150 carriages, it would have been | :08:12. | :08:17.
excellent news. I suppose the problems -- the problem is these | :08:17. | :08:22.
are the people's cast-offs. But the people of Yorkshire deserved new | :08:22. | :08:27.
carriages? We do. These are 21 years old and third-hand coaches, | :08:28. | :08:32.
and yes I do believe the travelling public of West Yorkshire do believe | :08:32. | :08:35.
brand new coaches and the sort of investment we are seeing in Greater | :08:35. | :08:42.
London. Briefly, will it make a difference and reduce overcrowding? | :08:42. | :08:46.
It will certainly reduce overcrowding. We have seen 50 | :08:46. | :08:51.
trains are being spread over the Airedale, of Wharfedale and Leeds- | :08:51. | :08:56.
Doncaster or line, which will release rolling-stock for elsewhere, | :08:56. | :08:59.
and it's like Northern Rail have said, it won't guarantee everybody | :08:59. | :09:02.
a seat but it should make them easier to get on the trains they | :09:02. | :09:06.
are trying to catch. Many thanks for joining us this evening. | :09:06. | :09:11.
Coming up on Look North tonight: she is always a favourite. | :09:11. | :09:16.
Jenny Agutter comes to Sheffield. The star of The Railway Children | :09:16. | :09:19.
was in town to open a new ward at the Northern General. | :09:19. | :09:23.
Other stories making the news this evening. A man from Barnsley has | :09:23. | :09:26.
been given a life sentence and told he'll serve at least 12 years in | :09:26. | :09:30.
jail for the murder of his baby son Kieron Hutchinson. The seven-week- | :09:30. | :09:33.
old suffered severe brain damage last year after he was left for a | :09:33. | :09:39.
short time with Ian Hutchinson. The 25-year-old was found guilty of his | :09:39. | :09:44.
murder on Friday. At Sheffield Crown Court this morning, the judge | :09:44. | :09:48.
said this was a spur of the moment loss of temper and there was no | :09:48. | :09:56.
intention to kill. They are not easy cases, they are | :09:56. | :10:01.
difficult and that they are very emotive, but putting emotions aside, | :10:01. | :10:04.
it has to be a collection of all the evidence that surrounded. The | :10:04. | :10:09.
most important aspects were the medical evidence and this was | :10:09. | :10:12.
really overwhelming, as identified by the judge. | :10:12. | :10:16.
The tourism body Visit York says it is losing more than a quarter of | :10:16. | :10:19.
its workforce as a result of Government funding cuts. It is | :10:19. | :10:22.
facing a budget shortfall next year of 300,000 but says it is working | :10:22. | :10:26.
hard to identify new funding streams. 12 jobs will go. | :10:26. | :10:29.
Partygoers in South Yorkshire are being reminded they face fines of | :10:29. | :10:33.
80 for drunken behaviour. The police have said they will issue | :10:33. | :10:36.
fixed-penalty notices to those who appear drunk and could then be | :10:36. | :10:40.
involved in alcohol-related disorder. Offenders will be given | :10:40. | :10:46.
the option of attending information sessions to avoid the fine. | :10:46. | :10:48.
Next tonight, she's a British screen icon, but for once Jenny | :10:48. | :10:52.
Agutter wasn't in Yorkshire to talk about her acting career. Instead | :10:52. | :10:58.
she was in Sheffield to open a new 2.5 million hospital unit. It will | :10:59. | :11:03.
treat people who suffer from cystic fibrosis. And as Tom Ingall found | :11:03. | :11:11.
out, she has a very personal reason to support the cause. | :11:11. | :11:16.
Being centre-stage might be familiar. So to the applause and | :11:16. | :11:22.
flashing cameras. But the venue, perhaps less so. It is the personal | :11:22. | :11:26.
touch which has brought Jenny Agutter to Sheffield's Northern | :11:26. | :11:29.
General Hospital today, to meet young people suffering from cystic | :11:29. | :11:34.
fibrosis. I have a Nice with cystic fibrosis and I remember when we | :11:34. | :11:39.
first found dead, we were told that the median age left -- life | :11:39. | :11:47.
expectancy was 80 years at that point -- when we first find out. | :11:47. | :11:51.
Than the median age life-expectancy but eight years. Now it has gone up | :11:51. | :11:58.
to over 30. In each of the rooms has been made to help the patient | :11:58. | :12:02.
have the most comfortable stay possible. But because they cannot | :12:02. | :12:05.
socialised to prevent the risk of cross-infection, there are full on | :12:05. | :12:10.
sweet and entertainment facilities inside. It is very well equipped | :12:10. | :12:14.
and it has its own pharmacy Arnside and a kitchen way you can prepare | :12:14. | :12:18.
meals, the patients get the meals that all the other patients dead, | :12:18. | :12:23.
but because we need extra calories for them, we cook extra things | :12:23. | :12:29.
between males and -- all the other patients get. Oh, mother, I'm sorry. | :12:29. | :12:34.
I know you didn't want us to find out. Jenny Agutter's acting career | :12:34. | :12:40.
has spanned decades. One of her first Rolls was sent The Railway | :12:40. | :12:43.
Children for the BBC, which she went on to play again for the | :12:43. | :12:48.
cinema adaptation. And she is a patron of the cystic fibrosis Trust. | :12:48. | :12:55.
I am not here to wait at petticoat this time, but only to say how | :12:55. | :12:59.
extraordinary all the work is to make this happen. The unit is | :12:59. | :13:02.
already fully operational, but fund-raising continues. Another | :13:02. | :13:12.
reason why Jenny Agutter's visit It has had to contend with the wind, | :13:12. | :13:19.
rain, planning objections and even wildlife, but finally the York will | :13:19. | :13:24.
is up and running. It is at a new site and it will be | :13:24. | :13:30.
here for one year only. It looks for all the world like | :13:30. | :13:34.
spectacular because -- Meccano, and it is essentially what it is. | :13:34. | :13:38.
Engineers have spent the day testing the pins which hold the | :13:38. | :13:44.
wheel together. Independent testers also carry out test. It has taken | :13:44. | :13:48.
three years to find the wheel a new home in York, but the final | :13:48. | :13:51.
countdown is finally here. Organisers are now confident that | :13:51. | :13:56.
2pm tomorrow afternoon will see the first members of the public ride on | :13:56. | :14:02.
York's new wheel. Each pot can hold six people, which means the wheel | :14:02. | :14:07.
can handle 350 site see us at a time, 1000 per hour. These are the | :14:07. | :14:12.
site they will see. The views are from the former site at the Railway | :14:12. | :14:16.
Museum. The new pitch at the Royal York Hotel Garden is closer to the | :14:16. | :14:20.
city centre and the Minster. It is also very close to the station, | :14:20. | :14:24.
making it unmissable for thousands of tourists. We went and had a look | :14:24. | :14:31.
around to different spots, and I think it is a fantastic spot. | :14:31. | :14:34.
Especially people coming by train. This weekend, people were doing the | :14:34. | :14:38.
Christmas shopping, and the interest was amazing. Construction | :14:38. | :14:43.
has taken several days longer than usual because of the weather. There | :14:43. | :14:46.
really time-consuming hurdle has been planning permission. The | :14:46. | :14:52.
scheme to put it behind an arts gallery fell foul of wildlife | :14:52. | :14:58.
protection laws. But this one held up. It will operate at night as | :14:58. | :15:03.
well as at day, giving visitors a new perspective of a city with more | :15:03. | :15:07.
than its fair share of spectacular views. | :15:07. | :15:11.
Lovely sunny skies they in York! Apparently horrendous weather still | :15:11. | :15:19.
to come. Impressive ball control! Including | :15:19. | :15:27.
this helping, helping -- including this, helping Wednesday to a win. | :15:27. | :15:30.
Do you remember them? It is It's A Knockout champions from Yorkshire. | :15:30. | :15:39.
They cannot resist meeting Stewart fall for another go 35 years later. | :15:39. | :15:44.
I can remember Stuart Hall from the first time around with It's A | :15:44. | :15:47.
Knockout. He still does the football on 5 | :15:47. | :15:51.
Live, his reports certainly stand out! | :15:51. | :15:53.
I never understand a word he is saying. | :15:53. | :16:00.
He is entertaining if not necessarily informative. | :16:00. | :16:05.
Nice to see you, just for one night! | :16:05. | :16:11.
I AM getting away as soon as I can! A mention for the hero of the | :16:11. | :16:15.
weekend, Sheffield United's Richard Cresswell who has been praised by | :16:15. | :16:18.
the Rochdale keeper David Lucas for potentially saving his life. | :16:18. | :16:23.
Cresswell, who was this team-mate at look -- Luton, helped him after | :16:23. | :16:26.
a collision helped him unconscious. He put him into the recovery | :16:26. | :16:29.
position and swapped him from swallowing his tongue. After the | :16:29. | :16:34.
game, the former player said someone as sensible and quick- | :16:34. | :16:40.
thinking as Chris Rock reacted, and he was lucky. | :16:40. | :16:45.
Creswell got in on the act as the blades one. Let's start in the | :16:45. | :16:50.
championship of the classic game of two halves at Oakland -- Oakwell. | :16:50. | :16:54.
It was all going so well for Barnsley, they go -- dominated the | :16:54. | :16:58.
first half against Ipswich. A penalty followed by another | :16:58. | :17:04.
contender for celebration of the season. They were of two-0 up at | :17:04. | :17:11.
half-time, but then five second half goals from Ipswich. By the | :17:11. | :17:14.
time Davies got his second it was a consolation. | :17:14. | :17:18.
It was the Late, Late Show for Leeds United at Watford, One-nil | :17:18. | :17:21.
down and on-loan keeper penalty save gave them a chance to get a | :17:22. | :17:27.
point. A clumsy challenge deep into the -- injury time and Robert snob | :17:27. | :17:33.
grass equalise. But for a defensive blunder, they | :17:33. | :17:37.
might have held onto their lead. Their on-loan keeper will not want | :17:37. | :17:43.
to see this too often. Sheffield Wednesday remain in | :17:43. | :17:48.
second place in League One after a solid two-0 well at Oldham. Nifty | :17:48. | :17:53.
footwork to CV first. Answers on a postcard as to what this penalty | :17:53. | :18:01.
was given four. Even Gary Megson was bewildered. You don't know Eva? | :18:01. | :18:05.
What has the referee said? haven't asked, I never do. I am | :18:05. | :18:10.
just looking, there is a lot of bodies in there, I don't know. | :18:10. | :18:13.
brace from Ched Evans helped Sheffield United to a comfortable | :18:13. | :18:18.
win. In between his two goals, the rich -- Richard Cresswell put his | :18:18. | :18:25.
body on the line to get one. After their long unbeaten run in | :18:25. | :18:28.
the league, Huddersfield Town slumped to their second loss in a | :18:28. | :18:31.
row. Spare a thought to Chesterfield, a | :18:31. | :18:35.
brace of goals from Dean Morgan saw them too-one up against Wycombe, | :18:35. | :18:43.
with just 10 minutes to go. But they lost 3-2, Stuart Bevan scoring | :18:43. | :18:47.
in injury time. Rotherham were cruising but then | :18:47. | :18:53.
found themselves going level. Flimsy defending saw Hereford get | :18:53. | :18:58.
back in. This should have been cleared, but all was not lost. But | :18:58. | :19:02.
they still got to win. Bradford City got a valuable point | :19:02. | :19:08.
with a late equaliser from -- from David Hanson. | :19:08. | :19:10.
It was attacked again the fixtures for the Sheffield Steelers, they | :19:10. | :19:13.
beat Belfast on Friday, one at Coventry at the Cup on Saturday, | :19:13. | :19:19.
and yesterday they made it 3 at three were their win against | :19:19. | :19:27.
Braehead. He got a debut goal. Their player-coach admitted fatigue | :19:27. | :19:32.
was a problem. The guys was tired, you don't want to use that as an | :19:32. | :19:36.
excuse, but we did not have the extra jump to keep going. But we | :19:37. | :19:42.
still ground out to win. However we come, we will take some, especially | :19:42. | :19:46.
at the tail end. In sailing, Rotherham's Paul | :19:46. | :19:49.
Donnison made a steady start to the world championships in Perth. The | :19:49. | :19:52.
reigning Olympic Laser champion finished 5th and 8th in his opening | :19:52. | :19:58.
two races, leaving him 18th overall. He is just seven points from the | :19:58. | :20:02.
lead. The event is a key one as he built up to defending their gold | :20:02. | :20:04.
medal next year on home waters in Plymouth. | :20:04. | :20:09.
In speedway, the SFL Tigers have announced that almost -- former | :20:09. | :20:13.
skipper Ricky Ashworth has been released for the coming season -- | :20:13. | :20:17.

going to be horrendous weather here! | :20:50. | :20:56.
Did you used to watch It's A Knockout? Everybody watched it. | :20:56. | :21:03.

The international one was on the Saturday. In 19 some D6, it came to | :21:12. | :21:15.

home team. They won the heat and went on to represent Britain in | :21:22. | :21:26.
Jeux Sans Frontieres. Now Stuart Hall, the presenter, has been back | :21:26. | :21:36.

got down to the games. I ended up being the back end of a horse, it | :22:09. | :22:16.
might have been premeditated! 35 years later, some of that | :22:16. | :22:23.

we are all a bit older brother knockout spirit is still there. | :22:29. | :22:39.
:22:39. | :22:42. | ||
Here is game number one. Don't worry about the rules, it is all | :22:42. | :22:46.
about water guns, trying to stay upright, and not falling in the | :22:46. | :22:53.
water. Now there is an inflatable obstacle course. Sounds a simple, | :22:53. | :22:59.
doesn't it? Let's wait and see! Eileen is having a few problems. | :22:59. | :23:08.
Give the Galatea, she is doing her best! -- get the goal and cheer! -- | :23:08. | :23:18.

rightly, it was panned by the critics. We will be in a tower now! | :24:16. | :24:21.
I am sure it was Saturday teatime, because we used to watch the | :24:21. | :24:24.
wrestling and then puts It's A Knockout on. | :24:24. | :24:31.
The theme tunes were very similar. I think we are rambling! | :24:31. | :24:35.
I have got a couple of great pictures. It was icy on Saturday | :24:35. | :24:39.
