Welcome to Look North. Tonight: Speaking out for the first time. | :00:08. | :00:11.
The Yorkshire woman, raped by a lottery millionaire, tells us how | :00:11. | :00:14.
she changed the law. Until now, Shirley Woodman kept her identity | :00:14. | :00:23.
secret. Her attacker, Iowarth Hoare, went on to win 7 million. | :00:23. | :00:28.
And for I could not believe this had happened. Somebody rang me up | :00:28. | :00:34.
and said, the man who attacked you has just won the lottery, 7 | :00:34. | :00:38.
million. Shirley's just been awarded the MBE. We'll hear more | :00:38. | :00:41.
from her in a moment. Also tonight: Gale force winds | :00:41. | :00:44.
leave 1,500 homes without gas. Residents of Steeton could be | :00:44. | :00:51.
without heating and hot water for another two days. | :00:51. | :00:55.
And, the Bradford rockers who played at the Kremlin at the | :00:55. | :00:57.
request of one of their fans, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir | :00:57. | :01:07.
:01:07. | :01:08. | ||
It has been a very disturbed start to 2012, with further heavy rain | :01:08. | :01:18.
:01:18. | :01:20. | ||
and strong winds in the next 24 First tonight, the exclusive story | :01:20. | :01:25.
of one woman's extraordinary courage and tenacity. Shirley | :01:26. | :01:32.
Woodman fought a long battle with a rapist who viciously attacked her. | :01:32. | :01:36.
Her fight made national headlines and set a legal precedent for other | :01:36. | :01:41.
victims. Iorworth Hoare tried to rape Shirley in Roundhay Park in | :01:41. | :01:44.
Leeds in 1988. Hoare, who already had a string of convictions for sex | :01:44. | :01:48.
attacks, was sentenced to life in prison. But, 16 years later, while | :01:48. | :01:51.
on day release, he bought a National Lottery ticket and won | :01:51. | :01:56.
more than 7 million. Shirley pursued him through the courts for | :01:56. | :02:00.
compensation and, in 2008, the House of Lords made a landmark | :02:00. | :02:03.
ruling in her favour. Shirley, from Leeds, could only previously be | :02:03. | :02:07.
identified as Mrs A. But now, after being awarded an MBE in the New | :02:07. | :02:10.
Year's Honours, she's waived her right to anonymity. She and her | :02:10. | :02:20.
:02:20. | :02:24. | ||
daughter Shelley Wolfson have been speaking to Look North's Joe Inwood. | :02:24. | :02:29.
I was absolutely frozen with fear. I could not believe this had | :02:29. | :02:35.
happened. Somebody rang me up and said, the man who attacked you has | :02:35. | :02:43.
just won the lottery, 7 million. I was absolutely horrified. And it | :02:43. | :02:50.
seemed so unjust that, not only myself, but other people, other of | :02:50. | :02:55.
his victims, could not share in some of the money, and take out a | :02:55. | :03:01.
case of damages against him. And I was being continually told at this | :03:01. | :03:06.
time that the law of limitations is there, and you will not win, we | :03:06. | :03:11.
cannot change it. But that was exactly what Shirley Woodman went | :03:11. | :03:17.
on to do. The law meant wants six years had passed she could no | :03:17. | :03:22.
longer sue Hoare, the man who had attacked her. But four years and | :03:22. | :03:26.
hundreds of thousands of pounds of legal costs later, she was in the | :03:26. | :03:31.
House of Lords changing the law. meant that other people would be | :03:31. | :03:36.
benefiting from that. At that time, children who had been in care and | :03:36. | :03:40.
who had been abused, whose employers had realised I was taking | :03:40. | :03:48.
my case of damages, and as my decision was made, we then you that | :03:48. | :03:52.
these young people who had been abused so many years later -- | :03:52. | :03:58.
earlier, they would also win their case. It is fair to say this wasn't | :03:58. | :04:03.
for you or the money? Oh my goodness, no, not at all, it was | :04:03. | :04:09.
for justice. There was no thought of money at the beginning. In fact, | :04:09. | :04:14.
it was going for charity and it has gone to charity. War of the money | :04:14. | :04:19.
went to charity? Yes, all the money has gone. You were involved in | :04:19. | :04:25.
nominating your mum, why did you do it? She is a woman of dignity, a | :04:25. | :04:30.
woman of strength. She fought the Law of the land and she won, and | :04:30. | :04:36.
for that I am so proud to be her daughter, so proud of her. Shirley | :04:36. | :04:42.
Woodman, MBA p! For how do you feel looking back? It has been a | :04:42. | :04:48.
fantastic struggle. It was a fantastic struggle, it was a long | :04:48. | :04:55.
and dramatic one. It was very hard at times. There were days when I | :04:55. | :05:05.
:05:05. | :05:05. | ||
was despondent, and became a little depressed. But, when we had the | :05:06. | :05:13.
decision from the House of Lords, there was jubilation. And, over the | :05:13. | :05:21.
years now, it is three years now, I have settled down. I feel more | :05:21. | :05:27.
composed about it and I don't mind now being identified as the person | :05:27. | :05:31.
who took my assailant to court and changed the law. | :05:31. | :05:34.
Let's talk to Chris Allen, who's the managing partner of Blacks | :05:34. | :05:44.
:05:44. | :05:48. | ||
Solicitors in Leeds. She had to battle for this. She stuck at it, | :05:48. | :05:53.
anybody who has been involved in civil litigation will say to you, | :05:53. | :05:58.
you have good days, terrible days, it goes on and on. The only | :05:58. | :06:04.
positive is the court made a right decision. It exercised its | :06:04. | :06:08.
discretion and the right result, 99% of people what she will say the | :06:08. | :06:14.
right decision was made. But, 99% of people would have given up long | :06:14. | :06:20.
ago. She was hundreds of thousands of pounds down and costs will | :06:20. | :06:25.
awarded against her at one time. There are lots of people out there | :06:25. | :06:31.
with fantastic cases, and they give up because it is incredibly costly | :06:31. | :06:37.
and wearing, the court process is a slow one. If you get the right | :06:37. | :06:43.
result at the end, you are lucky. So many people for a way because it | :06:43. | :06:50.
wears them down. The family make say, let us move on. There are only | :06:50. | :06:56.
two ways to change the law, do what Shelley did, up or legislation is | :06:56. | :07:06.
:07:06. | :07:09. | ||
changed. It seemed an impossible task. Anybody under taking that | :07:09. | :07:16.
course of action has to be a wet it is a long road. If you look at | :07:16. | :07:26.
:07:26. | :07:28. | ||
legal aid, it is a trend -- trimmed and trimmed. Yes, you can gamble | :07:28. | :07:38.
:07:38. | :07:39. | ||
your life savings. That is the case, it is tough. An MP well deserved. - | :07:40. | :07:43.
- An MBE. The funerals have been held today | :07:43. | :07:47.
of a mother and her two young sons who were murdered by her husband. | :07:47. | :07:50.
Richard Smith, 37, stabbed his family to death at their home in | :07:50. | :07:53.
Pudsey a fortnight before Christmas, before killing himself. Our crime | :07:53. | :08:03.
:08:03. | :08:06. | ||
correspondent John Cundy reports. The funeral cortege arrived at 11am. | :08:06. | :08:09.
The first car had family mourners, and the coffin of the mother, | :08:09. | :08:13.
Claire Smith. In the second car, the coffins of her two sons. There | :08:13. | :08:18.
was a huge turnout at the crematorium for this tragic family. | :08:18. | :08:21.
This service here was for a young family who were so looking forward | :08:21. | :08:31.
to Christmas before their terrible tragedy. Richard Smith killed his | :08:31. | :08:35.
wife who was 36, and his two sons, one was nine and one was aged just | :08:35. | :08:39.
13 months, before setting fire to the bedroom where he lay down their | :08:39. | :08:47.
bodies. Still profound shock at what happened to an apparently | :08:47. | :08:50.
happy family who had enjoyed a night out at the local cricket club. | :08:50. | :08:54.
After they arrived home, something terrible went wrong at the hands of | :08:54. | :09:04.
:09:04. | :09:04. | ||
Richard Smith. Tributes which built up outside number 11 showed that | :09:04. | :09:14.
the boys were Leeds United fans. A full inquest will hope to establish | :09:14. | :09:19.
what lead of Richard Smith to do what he did here at the family home | :09:19. | :09:25.
without warning, and apparently on the spur of the moment. Mourners at | :09:25. | :09:28.
the funeral remained in despair at how this could happen to a young | :09:29. | :09:38.
:09:39. | :09:39. | ||
family with so much to look forward Later on Look North: Campaigning to | :09:39. | :09:43.
create a minor miracle. A bid to raise thousands of pounds to help a | :09:43. | :09:47.
young girl walk unaided for the first time. | :09:47. | :09:55.
Gale force winds and driving rain have been buffeting Yorkshire today. | :09:55. | :09:58.
The severe weather conditions have left around 1,500 homes without gas | :09:58. | :10:02.
in Steeton near Keighley, and our reporter Olivia Richwald joins us | :10:02. | :10:08.
now live from there. What exactly happened? | :10:08. | :10:16.
The high winds are wrecked a roof from a gas kiosk, and damaged some | :10:16. | :10:22.
vital equipment. The gas supply was automatically switched off. The | :10:23. | :10:26.
problem is 1,500 homes have been affected, they can't restore the | :10:26. | :10:31.
gas supply until engineers have visited every single home. When are | :10:31. | :10:40.
people going to get their gas back on? I think we are probably talking | :10:40. | :10:46.
a day rather than hours, and certainly not tonight. The network | :10:46. | :10:49.
engineers are already making home visits, and working through the | :10:49. | :10:54.
evening. The latest information is that this is a drop in centre, they | :10:54. | :10:59.
are handing out electric fan heaters, prioritising the elderly | :10:59. | :11:03.
and vulnerable. It is very cold at the moment which is causing | :11:04. | :11:10.
problems. Everything I have got runs by gas, a gas fire, central- | :11:10. | :11:18.
heating, cooker. My water. I have nothing. I have three young | :11:18. | :11:23.
children, the youngest is 18 months, on my own in a three-storey house. | :11:23. | :11:27.
When not in a position to say exactly when people will get their | :11:27. | :11:32.
supply back, but we are working as hard and quickly as possible to get | :11:32. | :11:38.
the supply back on. It is important to say that the general hospital | :11:38. | :11:45.
has not been affected by this, and there are two drop-in centres with | :11:45. | :11:49.
the electric heaters, and a second at the leisure centre where you can | :11:49. | :11:52.
get a hot drink. And we'll keep you updated on this | :11:52. | :11:56.
story on the late Look North tonight. Join me at 10.25pm for the | :11:56. | :12:04.
latest from Steeton. A 19-year-old man has been arrested | :12:04. | :12:08.
on suspicion of murder after a father of two was stabbed to death | :12:08. | :12:14.
in the early hours of New Year's Day. Joshua Green was attacked on | :12:14. | :12:18.
the dance floor of the Stars and Mayfair club in Sheffield and died | :12:18. | :12:22.
at the scene from his injuries. Two police officers who disarmed | :12:22. | :12:27.
and arrested a man who was carrying a knife on a railway line in Leeds | :12:27. | :12:29.
have been commended for their bravery. Robert Pedley and Mark | :12:30. | :12:33.
Movley were called to the scene in Kirkstall in August 2010, after a | :12:33. | :12:36.
report of a highly dangerous man on the tracks. British Transport | :12:36. | :12:39.
Police has now officially recognised the way they handled the | :12:39. | :12:49.

Bradford born painter David Hockney has criticised artists like Damien | :12:52. | :12:57.
Hirst, saying they should create their own work. He is due to | :12:57. | :13:00.
exhibit David Hockney: A Bigger Picture at the Royal Academy in | :13:00. | :13:05.
London later this month. The poster reads, all the works here were made | :13:06. | :13:10.
by the artist himself personally. He has told a Radio Times it is | :13:10. | :13:15.
insulting for an artist to employ others to make their creations. | :13:15. | :13:20.
A couple from West Yorkshire trying to raise 50,000 for an operation | :13:20. | :13:23.

with cerebral palsy in the UK, but it is not widely available, forcing | :13:32. | :13:37.
many families to fund the expense of operation in the States are. | :13:37. | :13:43.

physiotherapy. Why were you so sad? Because I was going to miss the | :13:55. | :14:00.
school play, why do I always have to miss it? She was born three | :14:00. | :14:05.
months prematurely, weighing three pts 12 ounces. She has cerebral | :14:05. | :14:10.
palsy as a result. She cannot walk, crawl or stand without help. She | :14:10. | :14:13.
has been selected to have an operation in America that could | :14:14. | :14:19.
help her walk. It will cost up to 50,000. It will be life-changing | :14:19. | :14:23.
for her. She will be able to gain the independence and be able to | :14:23. | :14:27.
dance and get herself about by whatever name is. | :14:27. | :14:31.
The procedure has been approved in the UK, but his is not available | :14:31. | :14:37.
widely because it has expensive. is sad we cannot do it in this | :14:37. | :14:42.
country yet, ultimately Britain needs to provide for its children, | :14:42. | :14:45.
and in the meantime you have got children growing up who would | :14:45. | :14:50.
benefit from the treatment. So yes, for some of them, they will have to | :14:50. | :14:54.
travel to the States, and it is were 12. It is scary pitting your | :14:54. | :14:58.
child through an operation, but think about the other side of the | :14:58. | :15:03.
coin. Her living losing the ability for the rest of her life is also | :15:03. | :15:11.
devastating. I have always wanted to walk. Her journey is the fund- | :15:11. | :15:21.

If you have not eaten enough chocolate at Christmas, we have a | :15:26. | :15:31.
treat for you. But coming up there for so than pm: We will have a full | :15:31. | :15:36.
round-up, including new hope for Doncaster Rovers, as they battle to | :15:36. | :15:43.
beat Barnsley. If you watched the one-off special | :15:43. | :15:47.
edition of Jim'll Fix It on BBC One over Christmas, you will know that | :15:47. | :15:51.
one of the stars was eight year-old Joshua Greenwood from Hebden Bridge. | :15:52. | :15:58.
The programme, presented by Shane Ritchie, fixed it for Joshua at to | :15:58. | :16:02.
become Willy Wonka for the day. He wanted to design and make his own | :16:02. | :16:07.
chocolate bar. And he did! Confectionery company Nestle were | :16:07. | :16:10.
so impressed they are now considering putting it into | :16:10. | :16:14.
production. We will hear from Joshua in a minute. But here he is | :16:14. | :16:18.
on a Jim'll Fix It. Please can you fix it for me to be | :16:18. | :16:22.
like Willy Wonka for one day. would love to visit a chocolate | :16:22. | :16:31.
factory to see how it is made. me through your designs. There is | :16:31. | :16:38.
toffee or fudge and side. This is your favourite one? Yes. Shall we | :16:38. | :16:44.
make this today? I would love that. This is the first ever Treasure bar. | :16:44. | :16:54.
:16:54. | :16:55. | ||
It is excellent. Well done! I loved chocolate. But | :16:56. | :17:00.
it is a very competitive market. What makes a great chocolate bar? | :17:00. | :17:08.
What needs to be in it? I Treasure ba has toffee... Can we say, this | :17:08. | :17:15.
is the bar that we are talking about. It has toffee, fudge and | :17:16. | :17:21.
chocolate in it. I think that makes a very good taste. You're probably | :17:21. | :17:25.
right. I shall taste it to see if you are right. | :17:25. | :17:31.
Mum, obviously you and I and Harry grew up with Jim'll Fix It. Joshua | :17:31. | :17:35.
had never experienced it. This had always been a genuine ambition? | :17:35. | :17:40.
Absolutely, ever since he read the book, a couple of years ago, he was | :17:40. | :17:45.
fascinated by the whole story. It said his imagination on fire, all | :17:45. | :17:49.
these wonderful chocolate ideas. To be given the chance to go to the | :17:49. | :17:53.
factory and create his own chocolate bar, and see it going to | :17:53. | :18:00.
production, is Brazil -- brilliant. It is wonderful for all stop I love | :18:00. | :18:03.
the packaging. Did you have anything to do with | :18:03. | :18:11.
that? It is bright and cheerful. Well, I designed my own rapper, and | :18:11. | :18:17.
they scanned it into a computer, and made it look better. But it is | :18:17. | :18:23.
all your design. It really looks bright. I would be tempted with any | :18:23. | :18:26.
chocolate, but I would be really tempted to buy this. I know I | :18:26. | :18:30.
cannot give the secret a way, but they were impressed with your | :18:30. | :18:37.
chocolate, which Harry is eating, and the wrapping. You might find | :18:37. | :18:40.
your own chocolate bar will be in a shop near you. Do you hope that is | :18:40. | :18:47.
going to happen? Yes. What is it worth? What do you think | :18:47. | :18:53.
is a decent price? It is priceless! What was it like being on TV? | :18:53. | :19:02.
was amazing. And you're on TV again, you know! Yes! Did you have a | :19:02. | :19:06.
secret ingredient? I think the best bit about your chocolate, and Harry | :19:06. | :19:11.
is a connoisseur, and has had three pieces, is the crunchy bits inside. | :19:11. | :19:21.
:19:21. | :19:22. | ||
What are they? Well, it is just toffee and fudge. And you put some | :19:22. | :19:29.
honeycomb into it is well. We hope the chocolate appears all over the | :19:29. | :19:35.
world. Thank you very much for coming. | :19:35. | :19:38.
While we have been eating and drinking and watching too much TV, | :19:38. | :19:42.
it has been a busy time for the footballers. | :19:42. | :19:45.
The hectic Christmas period has been a mixed bag for our sights. | :19:45. | :19:55.
:19:55. | :20:05. | ||
The final games to place a There was good work by Billy sharp, | :20:05. | :20:09.
to give them the early lead. And it was all wrapped up in the last few | :20:09. | :20:13.
minutes of the game. Simon Grayson needed a win, as they faced Burnley | :20:13. | :20:19.
at Elland Road. The visitors were reduced to 10 men after 29 minutes, | :20:19. | :20:27.
but they went behind and it was an open goal that got them level. The | :20:27. | :20:37.
:20:37. | :20:40. | ||
You can see how important Doncaster Rover's win was, keeping them with | :20:40. | :20:45.
a shout of safety. Sheffield Wednesday were the only | :20:45. | :20:48.
one of the teams to win yesterday. They did the damage early, getting | :20:48. | :20:57.
two goals. Tranmere got one back. Sheffield United boss Danny Wilson | :20:57. | :21:01.
was mystified to see his side lose at Carlisle. They played well and | :21:01. | :21:05.
