Welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight the town prepares for a | :00:08. | :00:11.
fight. There is anger in Northallerton about fears for the | :00:11. | :00:19.
future of maternity and Children's Services in the town. When asked to | :00:19. | :00:24.
surrender a captain said I haven't begun to fight and neither have we. | :00:24. | :00:28.
Stepping up security. Leeds University employs its own police | :00:28. | :00:34.
officer after a spate of attacks on students. And join me, live at | :00:34. | :00:38.
Headingley where Leeds Rhinos are preparing to defend their Super | :00:38. | :00:43.
League crown against Hull Kingston Rovers. I am in one of shelf's | :00:43. | :00:46.
three grit domes. As the city prepares for the big freeze and | :00:46. | :00:52.
over in the Hope valley where they have some snow are they ready for a | :00:52. | :00:56.
bit more? And join me for the all- important weekend forecast, the Met | :00:56. | :01:06.
:01:06. | :01:11. | ||
Office have an amber warning in As you can see a busy programme | :01:11. | :01:15.
ahead. A North Yorkshire town is gearing up for a fight to over | :01:16. | :01:19.
possibly changes at fire radge hospital. Hundreds of people | :01:19. | :01:24.
attended a meeting. The plans under discussion could see expectant mums | :01:24. | :01:31.
having to travel to York, Harrogate or Darlington. Children's Services | :01:31. | :01:34.
are also under review. A packed public meeting last night, | :01:34. | :01:39.
illustrates how much local people value the Friarage Hospital. Its | :01:39. | :01:44.
childrens and maternity services are under review. But the mood was | :01:44. | :01:48.
unpromise, they don't want to see childrens' services scaled back to | :01:48. | :01:54.
a Daewoo nit as recommended. I think people have their opinions | :01:54. | :01:58.
across. It became clear how strong the feelings are, that people don't | :01:58. | :02:03.
want to lose any services in the area. If it dizr disappearers, | :02:03. | :02:08.
children aren't going to be born in north shire, they will be born in | :02:08. | :02:12.
Durham. A ship's captain joined the American War of Independence, when | :02:12. | :02:15.
asked to surrender said I haven't begun to fight. Neither have we. | :02:15. | :02:21.
The problem at the hospital is its size. New clinical standards | :02:21. | :02:25.
require ten paediatric consultants for a Children's Service rather | :02:25. | :02:30.
than the Friarage's five. It has trouble getting those five. It took | :02:31. | :02:34.
two-years to fill the latest vacancy We also need paediatricians | :02:34. | :02:38.
who have general list skills, and increasingly, the way doctors are | :02:38. | :02:42.
trained mean they are looking for specialist job, which come pounds | :02:42. | :02:46.
the problem we have. Reducing the childrens' service would have | :02:46. | :02:49.
implications for maternity care. Over half of future births would | :02:49. | :02:53.
have to happen at other hospitals. Expectant mothers would have to | :02:53. | :02:56.
travel to York, Harrogate rg Darlington or Middlesbrough. On the | :02:56. | :03:01.
country roads round there, it could add up to an hour to journeys to | :03:01. | :03:04.
hospitals ch these mothers are worried. All have used the Friarage | :03:04. | :03:10.
bg and are anxious to see its services preed. If we had to go to | :03:10. | :03:16.
James Cook, it would have been a motorway birth. It would have. But, | :03:16. | :03:21.
I just made it to A&E. Half an hour makes a lot of difference if your | :03:21. | :03:25.
child is in breathing difficulties. You know, I would hate to think we | :03:25. | :03:32.
could lose out on a service as valuable at that. The consultation | :03:32. | :03:36.
is in its earliest stages tands trust has prom ined o -- promised | :03:36. | :03:40.
to listen what was said but no changes will be made without a | :03:40. | :03:48.
tough fight. Earlier I spoke to Dr Victoria Pleydell from the | :03:48. | :03:50.
Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group. Which | :03:50. | :03:54.
is overseeing the proposals. I asked how sur priceded she was by | :03:54. | :03:59.
the strength of feeling. I wasn't surprised at the number of people | :03:59. | :04:04.
who came yesterday. I have been a GP in this area for 24 years. I | :04:04. | :04:08.
understand how the local population value the Friarage, it is a | :04:08. | :04:12.
fantastic hospital, and I think people are fond of it, and I think | :04:12. | :04:16.
they are worried about any changes that might come along. Given you | :04:16. | :04:19.
know the area, you live up there, you know how difficult the roads | :04:19. | :04:24.
are up there, if you look at this weekend's weather forecast you | :04:24. | :04:29.
wouldn't want to be an expectant mum to travel miles to give birth? | :04:29. | :04:33.
I think travelling for hospital who live in a rural areas is always a | :04:33. | :04:36.
challenge, and certainly, in bad weather that makes it more | :04:36. | :04:40.
difficult. I think it is important to remember that actually you have | :04:40. | :04:46.
to look at whole geography, and if you look at swhr which is up in the | :04:46. | :04:52.
dale, it is the same journey time from there to Darlington, as it is | :04:52. | :04:57.
from there to Northallerton, and I have been reassured that the | :04:57. | :05:00.
paediatric and obstetric services at Darlington are going to continue. | :05:00. | :05:03.
So there will be real options for people, which won't necessarily | :05:03. | :05:08.
mean further travel. So when do you hope to have some firm proposals? | :05:08. | :05:12.
am very keen we do talk to young family whobs are the most affected | :05:12. | :05:17.
by the changes. We will consider all the options, we want to talk to | :05:17. | :05:20.
Darlington, the ambulance service we want to talk to the voluntary | :05:20. | :05:24.
sector, what we want to try and do is collect a real picture of what | :05:24. | :05:31.
we need to do going forward. Then we will pull together, formal | :05:31. | :05:35.
recommendation, which will then, we will talk to the public about again | :05:35. | :05:40.
and if necessary we will go through a public consultation, stwards | :05:40. | :05:44.
September or October. Realistically, do you think the services will | :05:44. | :05:49.
still be going in what, a year's time? A year's time I don't think | :05:49. | :05:54.
anything will be different. Going forward it may be we do have to | :05:54. | :05:59.
change some things. But what we need to make sure, is that the | :05:59. | :06:02.
service at the Friarage compared with everywhere else in the country | :06:02. | :06:06.
as good or better, which is what I want for the population that I | :06:06. | :06:11.
serve. Thank you very much for your time. The first severe wether of | :06:11. | :06:15.
the winter has arrived in Yorkshire. Temperatures dipped to minus 8 last | :06:15. | :06:20.
night and it is likely to be almost as cold tonight. There are hev y | :06:20. | :06:24.
show falls predicted tomorrow. We will have a full forecast from Paul | :06:25. | :06:29.
later but Tom is live at a Sheffield gritting depot where | :06:29. | :06:34.
extra staff have been brought in. It looks like they will have a lot | :06:34. | :06:39.
to do over the next couple of days. Indeed. This will be a familiar | :06:39. | :06:45.
sight. It is Sheffield's Mount Rushmore. We are inside one of | :06:45. | :06:50.
Sheffield's three grit dome, and in ability an hour the full fleet of | :06:50. | :06:55.
25 lorries will back in to here and head out to Sheffield's priority | :06:55. | :06:58.
routes. They plan to do it tomorrow when the snow is forecast. More on | :06:58. | :07:02.
that in a bit. But first I have been out to the Hope Valley where | :07:03. | :07:08.
they have a touch of the white stuff. How are they preparing for | :07:08. | :07:16.
more of it? High in the hills above the Hope kl valley a fresh load of | :07:16. | :07:21.
straw has arrived. For the Marsden family the next 24-hours will | :07:21. | :07:26.
prepare for snow. Each co-eats round 50 kilos of silage a day. We | :07:26. | :07:29.
need to make sure we have access to the bilt buildings, to make sure | :07:29. | :07:33.
that we can feed the cows, and particularly, with the forecast for | :07:33. | :07:38.
Saturday night, being the way it is, Saturday we will put out two lots | :07:38. | :07:43.
of feed just in case the snow that bad we can't get into the buildings. | :07:43. | :07:47.
In castle on to the white stuff is already here, albeit on the hills. | :07:47. | :07:51.
To keep tourists visiting, that is where it needs to stay. A few | :07:51. | :07:55.
flakes will bring out the ram bers -- ramblers but more will put a | :07:55. | :08:00.
stop to passing trade. The attraction has said it will stay | :08:00. | :08:07.
open. One of us will be open every day. Even if there are no visitors | :08:07. | :08:12.
Even if there is no-one. Yes, it could be the case I am sending | :08:12. | :08:18.
guides home or shop staff early. Watching the skies edale Mountain | :08:18. | :08:22.
Rescue Teams. I would expect the snow forecast it will be more | :08:22. | :08:28.
likely to be walker, rambler, slips and falls, I don't think it will be | :08:28. | :08:33.
voluntary services too much. So far, so beautiful, but in the next 24- | :08:33. | :08:40.
hours winter could turn ugly. So the gritting starts in about an | :08:40. | :08:44.
hour's time. They will do the same tomorrow, the forecast I spoke to | :08:44. | :08:47.
the head of gritting service earlier, he said the forecast they | :08:47. | :08:51.
are working to is somewhere between two and eight centimetres of snow, | :08:51. | :08:54.
arriving round about six clock tomorrow evening, I am sure Paul | :08:54. | :08:58.
will tell uls later on if that is correct or not. But any way, they | :08:58. | :09:02.
will commit to doing tall priority routes in Sheffield and their | :09:02. | :09:06.
policy is different many in the city because they want to get | :09:06. | :09:10.
further in to stop cars being abandoned and blocking roads on the | :09:11. | :09:15.
entry to estate -- estates. Of course, the snow warden, the 100 | :09:15. | :09:18.
wardens, they have got their bags of grit and they are on stand by | :09:18. | :09:22.
too. Of course, more interesting is what happens after the snow. How | :09:22. | :09:25.
long will it lipinger? The temperatures remain low will it | :09:25. | :09:30.
turn to rain on Sunday night as it supposed do if so we could be in | :09:30. | :09:35.
for a few tricky days of driving conditions. We could indeed. Stay | :09:36. | :09:41.
with us. Branching out. The trees sprouting shoes, as a new craze | :09:41. | :09:48.
hits Worksop. A 21-year-old described as a damaged and | :09:48. | :09:53.
dangerous man has been jailed for a minimum of 24 year, for the murder | :09:53. | :09:58.
of an elderly widow in a residential care home. Scott Scorby | :09:58. | :10:02.
battered and attempted to rape 96- year-old Elizabetta Pecka in | :10:02. | :10:06.
January last year. The court heard the attacker played its part in the | :10:06. | :10:10.
victim's death two months later. Our crime correspondent is outside | :10:10. | :10:17.
Bradford Crown Court. Tell us about the night Elizabetta Pecka was | :10:17. | :10:23.
attacked. Well, it was January 21st last year, serial burglar and thief | :10:23. | :10:26.
Scott Scorby broke into the Rosewood Court nursing home in | :10:26. | :10:31.
Bradford. He broke into the bedroom, through a window, of Elizabetta | :10:31. | :10:37.
Pecka. Then, aged 94. A widow who lived there on her own. She was | :10:37. | :10:42.
this bed. He jumped on her, he hit her at least is a times and | :10:42. | :10:46.
attempted to rape her in the bedroom and bathroom. He left her | :10:46. | :10:50.
in a bloodied state with severe facial injuries and the police had | :10:50. | :10:53.
no doubt at all those injuries played their part in her death two | :10:53. | :10:59.
months later in hospital. You have alluded to it but Scott Scorby had | :10:59. | :11:04.
a long history of crimes, didn't he? Well, he did, both before this | :11:04. | :11:07.
terrible offence and even in the days immediately after, and at the | :11:07. | :11:12.
time of the attack last January, he was on license from a bail hostel | :11:12. | :11:15.
after serving part of a four-and-a- half year sentence for the | :11:15. | :11:19.
attempted rape of a student in Leeds. Clearly, his history goes | :11:19. | :11:24.
back some way as the police explained to me. His previous | :11:24. | :11:32.
convictions go back to when he was a very young boy of 13, he has | :11:32. | :11:36.
repeatedly offended and he has gone o to commit some of the gravest | :11:36. | :11:39.
offences possible. How have the police reacted to this life | :11:39. | :11:44.
sentence? Well, clearly Harry, they have a lot of sympathy for | :11:44. | :11:48.
Elizabetta Pecka, she has no -- had no family. She was born in the | :11:48. | :11:53.
early years of the last century in eastern Europe. Her life had taken | :11:53. | :11:57.
her through Europe, defying the Nazi regime only to end up in this | :11:57. | :12:03.
sad way. After a sentence like this there is a talk of was it too harsh. | :12:03. | :12:08.
Even after 24 years for a 21-year- old I did hear talk of a possible | :12:08. | :12:13.
appeal on the grounds the sentence might be regarded as too lenient. | :12:13. | :12:18.
York City Council has confirmed plans to increase council tax -- | :12:18. | :12:20.
council tax and reject the Government money for freezing rates. | :12:20. | :12:29.
There is a rise of 2.9%. That would mean an extra 54 pence a week. The | :12:29. | :12:34.
council says this will mean an increase in spending on elderly | :12:34. | :12:38.
care and children. A week after the resignation of the chief executive | :12:38. | :12:42.
will there is more upheaval at mid Yorkshire hospitals. The chairman | :12:42. | :12:46.
has stepped down, the accountant joined the board of the troubled | :12:46. | :12:55.
trust in 2009, he will be replaced I by David Stone. Plans have | :12:55. | :13:00.
backbench unveiled showing the route of a new ling road from the | :13:00. | :13:08.
M18 to rair are rair. The road will run from June shunning three to | :13:08. | :13:11.
parrot's corner. People are being invited to view the plan, over the | :13:11. | :13:18.
Leeds University has recruited a full-time police officer based on | :13:18. | :13:23.
campus following a spate of attacks on students at the end of last year. | :13:23. | :13:26.
It comes as the city prepares to welcome 5,000 extra people from | :13:26. | :13:33.
China in the run up to the Olympics. With crime so much higher here than | :13:33. | :13:36.
in China, there are concerns that they won't be prepared. Ian White | :13:36. | :13:43.
has this exclusive story. There is a new kid on the block at Leeds | :13:43. | :13:48.
University. A West Yorkshire police officer based on and funded by the | :13:49. | :13:54.
campus. The appointment comes after a series of attacks on students in | :13:54. | :13:59.
Leeds before Christmas. One person has been charged. Investigations | :13:59. | :14:06.
continue. Policing Leeds University is like policing a small town. | :14:06. | :14:12.
Actually a small city. 40,000 people here. It is quite varied. | :14:12. | :14:16.
Obviously you have got the industry that comes into the university as | :14:16. | :14:25.
well. Everything is the same. What about your breathing? Moments after | :14:25. | :14:30.
the interview, Kevin had to deal with an emergency on campus. A | :14:30. | :14:37.
student needed help because his friend had taken ill. It is just a | :14:37. | :14:42.
case of making sure the ambulance has been called. Then looking after | :14:42. | :14:49.
them and reassuring them until the ambulance arrives. With many | :14:49. | :14:52.
Chinese athletes and support staff based in themselves around the | :14:52. | :14:57.
university for the Olympics, educating foreign students on how | :14:57. | :15:03.
to stay safe is one of Kevin's priorities. Here, we do not know | :15:03. | :15:09.
when it they will come and to attack us. We have to order a taxi | :15:09. | :15:14.
before we go somewhere. In our construe we do not call a cab | :15:14. | :15:23.
before we go out. -- in our country. His OK. We are putting on a country | :15:23. | :15:30.
brief. When the Chinese athletes come here, they get briefed. We | :15:30. | :15:36.
make that briefing part of their welcome. It is unusual for | :15:36. | :15:41.
university to find a policeman's salary. But it means he is on | :15:41. | :15:47.
campus all the time. Incredible. Before seven o'clock, | :15:47. | :15:50.
the all-important weather forecast, with snow on the way. Plus a look- | :15:50. | :15:53.
ahead to the weekend's football after a week of change for our | :15:53. | :16:02.
Championship teams. It's a busy weekend of sport ahead | :16:02. | :16:11.
with the start of the Super League season. And a new presenter for the | :16:11. | :16:15.
Super League Show. Leeds are at home to Hull KR, while in tonight's | :16:15. | :16:18.
other game, Wakefield travel to new boys Widnes. Shamir Masri is at | :16:18. | :16:28.
:16:28. | :16:28. | ||
Headingley for us now. Is the game on? Yes, it is perishing the cold. | :16:28. | :16:33.
The game is on. The coaches were out a few moments ago to look | :16:33. | :16:37.
around the pitch. They were concerned about one corner of the | :16:37. | :16:44.
pitch. It is much tougher than the rest. I got the thumbs up to the | :16:44. | :16:50.
delight of the fans. Before we talk about that, let's have a look at | :16:50. | :16:54.
what the coaches think their expectations are for the season | :16:54. | :16:59.
ahead. Bradford Bulls ended last season | :16:59. | :17:04.
with a whimper. They have strengthened the squad. I think we | :17:04. | :17:11.
are better prepared. I think we are better. We have a chance to win | :17:11. | :17:16.
more games. After six years with Terry Matterson at the helm, Ian | :17:16. | :17:25.
Millward takes charge of Castleford. What we need to do a little bit is | :17:25. | :17:28.
take a little bit of the pressure off Rangi Chase and have a system | :17:28. | :17:32.
where we are not totally reliant. I would hate to think we got an | :17:32. | :17:37.
injury that would be the end of the season. The Huddersfield Giants | :17:37. | :17:41.
have progressed under Nathan Brown. This will be his final year at the | :17:41. | :17:47.
clock. One day the club would like to go from the top four to getting | :17:47. | :17:54.
a trophy. If it is this year, great. As long as we keep improving. From | :17:55. | :17:59.
getting from where we are to get in when we need to get too, is not far | :17:59. | :18:03.
away. Leeds Rhinos are the reigning champions. They were brilliant and | :18:03. | :18:09.
the final third of last season. They him to start this one better. | :18:09. | :18:13.
You have to earn up the momentum we have. Sometimes that is gained | :18:13. | :18:17.
through adversity. There is no guarantee we will not set off like | :18:17. | :18:24.
that. But we can play well each week. It is all change at Wakefield. | :18:24. | :18:32.
18 new signings and new coaching staff. We understand it might take | :18:32. | :18:36.
time. We are looking forward to it. That is the challenge that has been | :18:36. | :18:44.
put in front of us. We have got some experienced players. | :18:44. | :18:48.
A lot of the coach is pretty unsure as to how they will start the | :18:48. | :18:55.
season. All very hopeful. Joining me now is a Eorl Crabtree from | :18:55. | :19:01.
Huddersfield Giants. We are here at Leeds. They had a brilliant end to | :19:01. | :19:07.
the season last season? Yes, I was very fortunate to come to a lot of | :19:07. | :19:12.
the games last season. They started poorly. They proved you can come | :19:12. | :19:18.
from anywhere. The Turin the play- offs to stand a chance. -- if you | :19:18. | :19:21.
were in the play-offs. I'm not sure how they will start this league | :19:21. | :19:27.
season. They have strengthened well. A few moments ago we were not sure | :19:27. | :19:32.
if they would start at all tonight. The coaches were checking the pits. | :19:32. | :19:38.
You want to share that would go ahead? It is a little bit too cold | :19:38. | :19:46.
for me tonight! The pity is rock hard. That can be dangerous. It is | :19:46. | :19:53.
only going to get more cold and harder. Looking at Huddersfield, a | :19:53. | :19:58.
few changes in the squad. Also to Castleford, but particularly to | :19:58. | :20:03.
Wakefield. There could be 13 players making their debut tonight. | :20:03. | :20:08.
How difficult is that? It is not only the players. It is the | :20:08. | :20:15.
coaching staff. New systems have been put in place. It is difficult | :20:15. | :20:20.
to adapt straight away. They are not bringing people through the | :20:20. | :20:24.
ranks tried to get experience. The experience is already there. | :20:24. | :20:29.
Hopefully there will be able to work together and do something. | :20:29. | :20:32.
about Bradford? They had a disappointing season last year. | :20:33. | :20:38.
They will hope for a better performance this time? Yes, they | :20:38. | :20:43.
will try to start on the right foot. It is good to see Phil Joseph has | :20:43. | :20:53.
:20:53. | :20:54. | ||
gone there and been given an opportunity. Eorl Crabtree will be | :20:54. | :20:58.
commentating for Radio Leeds. The Super League Show is back on Monday | :20:58. | :21:07.
night. Eorl Crabtree is a big softie. I can say that because I am | :21:07. | :21:16.
10 miles away! Onto football now, and it's been a week of change for | :21:16. | :21:19.
our teams in the Championship. Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley have | :21:19. | :21:22.
sold their top scorers, and Leeds United are still without a | :21:22. | :21:24.
permanent manager after the sacking of Simon Grayson. Ian Bucknell | :21:24. | :21:27.
reports. Tomorrow, football will once again be at the top of the | :21:27. | :21:31.
agenda for Leeds United. They are at Bristol City with Neil Redfearn | :21:31. | :21:35.
in temporary charge following their 4-1 defeat against Birmingham City | :21:35. | :21:40.
and the sacking of manager Simon Grayson. Huddersfield boss Lee | :21:40. | :21:45.
Clark remains favourite to succeed Grayson, despite clearly distancing | :21:45. | :21:49.
himself from the job. We understand Leeds will not be making a decision | :21:49. | :21:56.
until next week. Doncaster Rovers are preparing for life after the | :21:56. | :22:01.
sale of striker Billy Sharp. Rovers extended the contract of El-Hadji | :22:01. | :22:05.
Diouf yesterday. He and other strikers have been challenged to | :22:05. | :22:09.
fill Billy's boot. We have been making lots of chances. It will | :22:09. | :22:14.
give some of the others the chance to step up to the plate. They have | :22:14. | :22:19.
to grab it. If they don't, I will have to get somebody. Barnsley have | :22:19. | :22:28.
also sold their top-scorer, Ricardo Vaz Te A. They shrug it off on | :22:28. | :22:38.

Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over The cold weather has meant the | :22:38. | :22:40.
postponement of Sheffield United's match away at Colchester and | :22:40. | :22:48.
Rotherham's home game against Torquay due to a frozen pitch. | :22:48. | :22:52.
Shelly Rudman has won bronze in the skeleton bob at the World Cup event | :22:52. | :22:58.
in Canada. She hit the wall hard but recovered to take third place. | :22:58. | :23:03.
She lies second in the overall World Cup standings. Now you know | :23:03. | :23:07.
the phrase, money doesn't grow on trees. Well, what about shoes? Well, | :23:07. | :23:11.
a tree on the A57 near Worksop has become quite an attraction - | :23:11. | :23:14.
because of the footwear adorning it. But how did it get there? Emma | :23:14. | :23:21.
Blackburn has been to investigate. It looks like any other tree. Look | :23:22. | :23:31.
a bit closer and those large leaves are actually a leather soles. There | :23:31. | :23:37.
are dozens of them. Sizes, styles and some of the worse for wear. Why, | :23:37. | :23:42.
next to a busy main road, have these shoes appeared? It seems | :23:42. | :23:47.
nobody knows. I am just absolutely amazed. I have never noticed it | :23:47. | :23:52.
before. In the future I shall stop and see if I see anybody walking | :23:52. | :23:58.
around with their feet and asked them! It is quite freaky. It is as | :23:58. | :24:04.
if it is a memorial to people. I don't like it. I have seen queues | :24:04. | :24:08.
over wires and things of that nature. Never on trees. It must | :24:08. | :24:14.
mean something to somebody. Others have cropped up around the country. | :24:14. | :24:17.
In Buckinghamshire, a project was commissioned to find out about the | :24:18. | :24:22.
dangling foot where, but the mystery was never solved. Some of | :24:22. | :24:30.
these issues have been here a long time. Others are new. If you spot | :24:30. | :24:39.
somebody with cold feet, you might If you're going to Worksop, look | :24:39. | :24:49.

It is usually the Pennines that get it worse. Eastern parts of west and | :25:35. | :25:39.
North Yorkshire could bear the brunt of it tomorrow evening. A | :25:39. | :25:44.
bright start, snow later. Virtually all parts of the region will get | :25:44. | :25:49.
some snow through the course of Saturday. All courtesy of this | :25:49. | :25:58.
weather front. This was responsible for temperatures down to-nine | :25:58. | :26:05.

the evening. Let's look at the top temperatures. The wind will freshen | :27:03. | :27:09.
from the south. There will be at drifting of that snow in places. | :27:09. | :27:12.
Snow will continue through the evening and move away on a Saturday | :27:12. | :27:19.
night. It may turn to drizzle and light rain. They will be ice first | :27:19. | :27:25.
