Welcome to a special edition of Look North. Tonight we are in | :00:09. | :00:12.
Halifax, the historical home of 3 Yorks - which today lost five of | :00:12. | :00:22.
:00:22. | :00:22. | ||
its own in Afghanistan. Here in Yorkshire and across the | :00:22. | :00:25.
country, communities are morning. Tributes have been paid by those in | :00:25. | :00:35.
:00:35. | :00:36. | ||
power, and by ordinary people. think it is dreadful. For their | :00:36. | :00:41.
families, it is awful. And so many and ones. Our thoughts are with the | :00:41. | :00:45.
family and friends of these are brave is -- brave servicemen. This | :00:45. | :00:48.
is the largest loss of life in a single incident since to that does | :00:48. | :00:51.
Tonight we will investigate how this happened, reporting live from | :00:51. | :00:54.
Helmand province, and with soldiers who have been on the front line. | :00:54. | :00:58.
And, what's it like the troops about to start their tour? We hear | :00:58. | :01:00.
from members of the Yorkshire regiment preparing to head to | :01:00. | :01:05.
Afghanistan. Plenty of sunshine around today, | :01:05. | :01:15.
:01:15. | :01:22. | ||
but particularly heavy showers this Welcome to the programme. We are | :01:22. | :01:25.
live tonight from the historical home of the regiment which has | :01:25. | :01:35.
:01:35. | :01:36. | ||
suffered such a great loss in Afghanistan. It has had a long | :01:36. | :01:41.
association in this wonderful Town, which has been so proud - a 300 | :01:41. | :01:45.
year history. Today, five of the six British soldiers who we know | :01:45. | :01:50.
died in that explosion in Helmand Province came from 3 Yorks. They | :01:50. | :01:53.
had any just started their tour of duty. They flew out on Valentine's | :01:53. | :02:00.
Day. They were on a mounted patrol 40 kilometres north of Lashkar Gah | :02:00. | :02:04.
in the Helmand area of southern Afghanistan yesterday when their | :02:04. | :02:08.
Warrior armoured fighting vehicle hit a roadside bomb. In a moment we | :02:08. | :02:14.
will cross live for the latest to Afghanistan. First, Nicola Rees | :02:14. | :02:24.
:02:24. | :02:27. | ||
reports on the regiment. A week ago I was invited to | :02:27. | :02:31.
Wiltshire to meet soldiers of 3 Yorks as they made their final | :02:31. | :02:34.
preparations for Afghanistan. These men are due to deploy in the next | :02:34. | :02:38.
few weeks, but today they face the news that five of their comrades | :02:38. | :02:43.
are dead after their armoured vehicle was caught in a roadside | :02:43. | :02:47.
explosion in Helmand. The soldiers were carrying out a patrol in a | :02:47. | :02:50.
Warrior tank in an area around Highway One, of the main arterial | :02:50. | :02:56.
route between Lashkar Gah and Kandahar. It is grim news for the | :02:56. | :03:00.
three York -- 3 Yorks such as back home. 12 days ago, they told me | :03:00. | :03:04.
about their fears. Any person who says they are not nervous is a liar. | :03:04. | :03:09.
You have got to have nerves. Even getting shot, every day will be a | :03:09. | :03:14.
risk out there. I have just had a friend who lost his brother out | :03:14. | :03:18.
there. It is not good to hear of, but you were out there doing a job. | :03:18. | :03:23.
It is just a case of getting on with it. A 6th soldier from first | :03:23. | :03:26.
Battalion the Duke of Lancaster as is also thought to have died in the | :03:26. | :03:31.
blast. If confirmed, it will take the British death toll in | :03:31. | :03:34.
Afghanistan to 404. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of | :03:34. | :03:38.
these brave servicemen. This would be the largest loss of life in a | :03:38. | :03:42.
single incident in Afghanistan since 2006. We owe them and all of | :03:42. | :03:46.
those who have lost their lives in Afghanistan an immense debt of | :03:46. | :03:49.
gratitude, and our thoughts are with their family, friends and | :03:49. | :03:53.
colleagues at this terrible time. It underlines the Daily dangers as | :03:53. | :03:57.
soldiers still face in Afghanistan more than 10 years after the | :03:58. | :04:03.
campaign began. Yesterday, an inquest at plays into the death of | :04:03. | :04:06.
27-year-old and two from Whitby who was killed in a bomb blast last | :04:06. | :04:11.
year. The coroner said the cause was more sophisticated explosive | :04:11. | :04:17.
devices that are being used by the Taliban. Today in Wiltshire, the | :04:17. | :04:21.
Battalion's flag was at half mast, and a candle was lit in memory of | :04:21. | :04:31.
:04:31. | :04:40. | ||
the soldiers. Their families have been informed. | :04:40. | :04:44.
We seem to have lost communication with her. We will get back to her | :04:44. | :04:54.
:04:54. | :04:54. | ||
in a moment. The Yorkshire Regiment has paid a high price out in | :04:54. | :04:58.
Afghanistan. Well, the Yorkshire Regiment has paid a high price for | :04:58. | :05:00.
its service at in Afghanistan. These latest deaths bring the total | :05:00. | :05:04.
number to 14 for this one regiment alone. And, of course, the history | :05:04. | :05:07.
of the 3 Yorks regiment is based firmly here in Halifax. It was | :05:07. | :05:09.
formed out of the Duke of Wellington's which was stationed | :05:09. | :05:12.
here at Wellesley barracks. And indeed, the town every year saw | :05:12. | :05:15.
troops march from the barracks to the Minster. We will be talking to | :05:15. | :05:21.
the Cannon in a moment. First, this report from Emma Glasbey. | :05:21. | :05:25.
The pride of Yorkshire. Formed in 2006, its main reflecting the fact | :05:25. | :05:29.
that it is made up of some of the finest Yorkshire regiments, | :05:29. | :05:33.
including the one reeling from the tragic news today - the third | :05:33. | :05:38.
Battalion, formerly the Duke of Wellington's. A museum in Halifax | :05:38. | :05:43.
now recognises the regiment's links with the town dating back more than | :05:43. | :05:51.
300 years. Nine members were awarded the Victoria Cross. Adored | :05:51. | :05:57.
by the town, the battalion and even had a train named after it. Since | :05:57. | :06:03.
operations began in Afghanistan more than a decade ago, nine | :06:03. | :06:05.
soldiers from the newly formed Yorkshire Regiment have been killed | :06:05. | :06:10.
in action there. Following yesterday's explosion, that number | :06:10. | :06:19.
rises to 14. In 2009, rifleman James Backhouse from Castleford was | :06:19. | :06:23.
killed in Helmand province. He died in a explosion alongside four of | :06:23. | :06:27.
his fellow soldiers and friends. Today, his mother said her thoughts | :06:27. | :06:33.
are with the families of those killed in Kandahar last night. | :06:33. | :06:38.
take that news in, when you first find out that your son has been | :06:38. | :06:43.
killed is devastating. You're just not functioning right. It is like a | :06:43. | :06:48.
fog. It is just like a dream. Not a nice drink, but you feel like | :06:48. | :06:52.
you're floating and it is not really happening. It is so hard. | :06:52. | :06:55.
When the soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment parade through our towns | :06:55. | :07:00.
and cities, the affection for them is always clear. Today is a | :07:00. | :07:08.
reminder of the huge dangers they face. | :07:08. | :07:12.
M moment, we will talk to the canon of the Minster behind me, and also | :07:12. | :07:16.
a man proud to have started his military career with the Duke of | :07:16. | :07:22.
Wellington's that became the third Battalion. Now, let's cross live to | :07:22. | :07:27.
Kabul and our correspondent Quentin Sommerville. What do we know about | :07:27. | :07:37.
:07:37. | :07:40. | ||
this explosion? I am sorry. We are having problems. | :07:40. | :07:44.
You can understand it is difficult getting that a line from Kabul. | :07:44. | :07:49.
Let's now talk to our two guests. David Pinder, you are proud of your | :07:49. | :07:54.
association with the Duke of Wellington's. This down lives and | :07:54. | :07:59.
breathes the regiment, doesn't it? Absolutely. Halifax has always been | :07:59. | :08:03.
the home of the regiment for several hundred years. I suspect | :08:03. | :08:07.
for most people here, even though it is now the third Battalion the | :08:08. | :08:14.
Yorkshire Regiment, it is the Duke's. It seems incredible that it | :08:14. | :08:19.
is such a big tragedy for the regiment, isn't it? Regiments are | :08:19. | :08:26.
not very big. To lose six, well five and unattached young chap as | :08:26. | :08:32.
well, is a blow. Everybody will know everybody. Indeed, some as a | :08:32. | :08:36.
joint with fathers and brothers joined. Yes, and cousins in | :08:36. | :08:40.
different companies. And still continued until this day. | :08:40. | :08:44.
absolutely. This was the regiment of choice. What does it mean to you | :08:44. | :08:53.
to hear this news? Well, I started as a Duke back in 1965. For me it | :08:53. | :08:57.
has always been the regiment I started my military career in. You | :08:57. | :09:01.
stay in contact, do keep watching. I served in all the different | :09:01. | :09:05.
battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment. You feel great affinity. | :09:05. | :09:11.
I don't know if our camera can move towards the Cenotaph there, but | :09:11. | :09:15.
those two nearest reef so there are the Duke of Wellington's and the | :09:15. | :09:19.
Yorkshire Regiment. Yes, the one on the left ifs at the Duke of York | :09:19. | :09:27.
regiment -- Duke of Wellington. great sense of tragedy. Bringing in | :09:27. | :09:30.
now the canon of the parish church. This has always had a long | :09:30. | :09:33.
association with the Duke's. There is a special chapel there, isn't | :09:33. | :09:41.
there? Yes, in the Minster we have -- house the chapel for the Duke's, | :09:41. | :09:45.
now the Yorkshire Regiment, and we are proud that the colours that are | :09:46. | :09:49.
carried come to rest here as a safe place, where people can come and | :09:49. | :09:55.
visit them. And a candle is always looked for those serving? We have a | :09:55. | :10:00.
perm and candle that was let in 2009 at the beginning of the Afghan | :10:00. | :10:04.
war as a constant reminder of those who are serving for their families, | :10:04. | :10:08.
and for those who have lost their lives, both today and it during | :10:08. | :10:13.
this conflict. Tomorrow a book of condolence will be opened. In the | :10:13. | :10:16.
Minster we will have, from tomorrow onwards, a book of condolence | :10:16. | :10:22.
available for people to sign. Also candles for people to light. On | :10:22. | :10:26.
Sunday we will host a special service at 4pm as we remember those | :10:26. | :10:29.
who have lost their lives today, and all those who have died during | :10:29. | :10:34.
this conflict. This town will fill it greatly. Thank you. Back to the | :10:34. | :10:38.
studio. Sorry about the technical problems | :10:38. | :10:40.
there. Well, the regiment also has strong | :10:41. | :10:45.
links across the region. Its regimental headquarters are in York. | :10:45. | :10:48.
Indeed, the army is part of the fabric of the city. Today, the | :10:48. | :10:51.
flags outside HQ were flying at half-mast. The Archbishop of York | :10:51. | :10:54.
summed up that close relationship by paying tribute to those who had | :10:54. | :10:57.
paid the ultimate sacrifice. He said that our soldiers were the | :10:57. | :11:00.
best in the world. In the middle of York this afternoon, the tragic | :11:00. | :11:03.
loss has reinforced support for the forces doing a dangerous job. But | :11:03. | :11:07.
also brought up something else - a feeling that now is the time to | :11:07. | :11:13.
pull out. I don't think they should be there, | :11:13. | :11:16.
personally. I think it is a terrible shame. We have got family | :11:16. | :11:20.
members going out shortly and it will be a big worry. I honestly | :11:20. | :11:24.
don't know what for animal. I think it is dreadful, for them and their | :11:24. | :11:29.
families, of course. It is awful, but so many at once. I just wish we | :11:29. | :11:35.
could bring them out of the country and stop this awful war. Well, you | :11:35. | :11:39.
can't fault their commitment, but it is time to get the troops back | :11:39. | :11:45.
home. They have possibly done as much as they can, and now the time | :11:46. | :11:49.
is to let the Afghans get on with it and look after themselves. | :11:49. | :11:55.
I'm joined now from Westminster by Dan Jarvis, MP for Barnsley. | :11:55. | :11:59.
I hope he managed to hear what the people in York said today. They | :11:59. | :12:03.
were supporting the troops, but also said it is time to pull out. | :12:03. | :12:07.
think the most important thing I want to say is that it is | :12:07. | :12:11.
devastating news from Afghanistan today. Tragic for the families and | :12:11. | :12:14.
incredibly tough for those who will have to continue to serve under the | :12:14. | :12:17.
most difficult circumstances. I completely understand why people | :12:17. | :12:21.
think now is the right time to extract our troops from Afghanistan, | :12:22. | :12:25.
but the reality is that whether you think it is right or wrong to be | :12:25. | :12:29.
involved, we are now committed. The right thing to do is to stick it | :12:29. | :12:33.
out, continue with the mission, and get the Afghan national security | :12:33. | :12:38.
forces to a point where we can safely withdraw, hopefully in 2014. | :12:38. | :12:41.
Can you give me some perspective on what morale will be like for the | :12:41. | :12:45.
soldiers who have only been out there for three weeks? Those | :12:45. | :12:49.
soldiers who have already gone are extremely well trained, it very | :12:49. | :12:53.
well equipped and highly motivated. The reality is it will be extremely | :12:53. | :12:58.
tough, and they will be Feeney -- feeling Keeley the loss of their | :12:59. | :13:03.
comrades. But the Yorkshire soldier has never let this country down and | :13:03. | :13:06.
they will continue to do the most difficult job under the most | :13:06. | :13:09.
difficult circumstances. I know that the events that have taken | :13:09. | :13:13.
place over the previous 24 hours will only serve to harden the | :13:13. | :13:18.
resolve to continue to do this amazingly difficult job. What help | :13:18. | :13:22.
will be given to the bereaved families? All our thoughts are with | :13:22. | :13:26.
the families. Sadly, in many respects, the army is now well | :13:27. | :13:29.
practised in looking after those who have been bereaved. There are | :13:30. | :13:34.
systems in place, but I know those will work but the reality is that | :13:34. | :13:37.
families will need constant support for the coming days, weeks, months | :13:37. | :13:42.
and years. It is tragic for them. It is incredibly tough as well for | :13:42. | :13:46.
those soldiers who have not yet deployed, but will be deploying | :13:46. | :13:49.
over the coming days and weeks. Thank you for joining us this | :13:49. | :13:53.
evening. We will have more on the news from Afghanistan before the | :13:53. | :13:58.
end of the programme. Before then, all the action from | :13:58. | :14:03.
the promotion race with all our teams in action. | :14:03. | :14:06.
Other news now, and a 25-year-old man from Doncaster has been charged | :14:06. | :14:09.
in the United States with two counts of computer hacking. Ryan | :14:09. | :14:11.
Ackroyd from Mexborough is one of five people charged with | :14:11. | :14:15.
involvement in a wave of high- profile cyber attacks. He faces two | :14:15. | :14:21.
charges, which each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. | :14:21. | :14:23.
Four Remploy factories employing disabled workers across Yorkshire | :14:23. | :14:27.
are to close. Staff have been protesting against the proposals, | :14:27. | :14:29.
but sites in Chesterfield, Worksop, Leeds and Pontefract will close by | :14:29. | :14:35.
the end of the year. About 140 jobs will be lost. | :14:35. | :14:37.
The future of another 130 workers in Sheffield and Huddersfield is | :14:37. | :14:44.
still being considered. Two men aged 32 and 25 have been | :14:45. | :14:47.
arrested on suspicion of the murder of restaurant worker Amjad Hussain | :14:47. | :14:56.
in Bradford and genuine. -- in January. Mr Hussain was found dead | :14:56. | :14:59.
in his home in Undercliffe after a fire. But inquiries revealed he had | :14:59. | :15:02.
died from neck injuries caused by a heavy bladed instrument. The | :15:02. | :15:12.
:15:12. | :15:13. | ||
200 jobs are to be cut at Rotherham Council. They met today to discuss | :15:13. | :15:16.
the next financial year and they need to make savings of 20 million | :15:17. | :15:23.
in the next year. Kirklees Council have approved | :15:23. | :15:30.
plans for the development of more than 22,000 homes including one of | :15:30. | :15:34.
1500 on green belt. Controversial plans were voted through after a | :15:34. | :15:40.
heated meeting in Huddersfield. They include plans to open 240 Hex | :15:40. | :15:44.
tears for business use, some of which could be on the green belt. - | :15:45. | :15:53.
- heck tears. We have listened to those people in favour and those | :15:53. | :15:58.
are objecting. They have expressed their concerns at the lack of | :15:58. | :16:04.
employment land for the future. We have changed our position from | :16:04. | :16:09.
35,000 houses to 22,000 houses and using 1% of the green belt to | :16:09. | :16:15.
create the jobs for the future. Sport now and a cracking win for | :16:15. | :16:19.
Doncaster Rovers last night. It was against another team trying | :16:19. | :16:24.
to get away from the relegation zone, Nottingham Forest. | :16:24. | :16:33.
The first came from the new hero who only arrived yesterday. He | :16:33. | :16:39.
smacks that one in there. Kyle Bennett popped up once again. | :16:39. | :16:46.
He celebrated with the manager. This could be the one that they | :16:46. | :16:52.
looked back on when they turned it around. You can hear the noise that | :16:52. | :17:01.
they were making, it was incredible. I really enjoyed that call from 30 | :17:01. | :17:06.
yards. The rest of our Football League | :17:06. | :17:16.
:17:16. | :17:20. | ||
teams were in action last night. Sheffield United are the leaders of | :17:20. | :17:27.
the League One Yorkshire pack. The Blades equalised for a second time | :17:27. | :17:34.
but Alex Nicholls found a gap where a defender should have been. | :17:34. | :17:44.
:17:44. | :17:44. | ||
Over to Wednesday who got off to a strong start. The Owls went on to | :17:44. | :17:48.
win 4-1. Huddersfield broke through | :17:48. | :17:55.
Hartlepool's resistance thanks to this class retouch and strike. | :17:55. | :18:05.
:18:05. | :18:10. | ||
It is tighter than at that at the One more match in League One and | :18:10. | :18:20.
:18:20. | :18:27. | ||
Chesterfield drew Neil to nail. -- At Hull, it was no goals there. | :18:27. | :18:37.
:18:37. | :18:48. | ||
This mess led to this goal. Rotherham's Ryan Taylor gave them a | :18:48. | :18:54.
penalty and they later scored. Bradford took the lead after a fine | :18:54. | :19:04.
:19:04. | :19:05. | ||
piece of finishing. Accrington Stanley levelled to make it 1-1. | :19:05. | :19:10.
Doncaster Knights, Rotherham Titans and Leeds Carnegie of a poem to | :19:10. | :19:13.
start the rugby union championship play-offs this weekend. The whole | :19:13. | :19:20.
region has been given great news. The City of Leeds has been chosen | :19:20. | :19:26.
for one of the World Cup match venues for 2015. What we can't be | :19:26. | :19:31.
sure of his which stadium it will be. It could be Headingley but it | :19:31. | :19:35.
could be Elland Road. It depends on which World Cup match Leeds is | :19:35. | :19:42.
allocated. France against New Zealand would be nice. | :19:42. | :19:48.
Next, it is the brush up that has cost 15 million. The renovation | :19:48. | :19:54.
work at Chatsworth House is complete. The rest of the | :19:55. | :19:57.
scaffolding has come down and it new rooms have been opened up for | :19:57. | :20:01.
the first time. We take a look in the company of the Duke of | :20:01. | :20:11.

MUSIC PLAYS It is the jewel in the peak now with added sparkle. | :20:15. | :20:20.
Where there was scaffold and tarpaulin, now they scheming | :20:20. | :20:25.
stonework. Chatsworth hasn't been seen this way since it was built | :20:25. | :20:31.
300 years away -- 300 years ago. needed to redo the pointing and | :20:31. | :20:38.
clean it. Some of it needed to be recast. There was a lot of | :20:38. | :20:44.
scaffolding and it took a long time to get it up. It wasn't allowed to | :20:44. | :20:50.
touch the walls. Every generation has made his mark on this house. | :20:50. | :20:55.
The 12th Duke is no exception. He has revealed a few secrets. If it | :20:55. | :21:00.
wasn't for the visitors, we couldn't do this. We get so many | :21:00. | :21:05.
visitors and their support means we can do this a necessary restoration | :21:05. | :21:10.
work which we are proud of. Them masterplan hasn't just been about | :21:10. | :21:14.
cleaning and repairing the fabric of this grade one of Grade 1 listed | :21:14. | :21:20.
buildings. 15 million has been spent to open up new rooms. This | :21:20. | :21:26.
isn't a war, it is a door into one of the guest bedrooms built for the | :21:26. | :21:33.
6th Duke of Devonshire on display for the first time. For an Olympic | :21:33. | :21:38.
year, there is a lot of gold and silver on show. Even more exotic | :21:38. | :21:42.
treasures are promised through this year to mark the completion of the | :21:42. | :21:49.
masterplan. Well, I say completion. If you look at the top, you see how | :21:49. | :21:55.
filthy it is up there. There is a nasty black flame when it should be | :21:55. | :22:05.
:22:05. | :22:10. | ||
a clean one. There is still the I think you'd is yours for 15 in | :22:10. | :22:14.
the end. There is nothing wrong with chip | :22:14. | :22:22.
paper. Here are some photographs. We have the three main power | :22:22. | :22:32.

sunshine. The main thing is high pressure will build over the next | :22:52. | :23:00.
two or three days. There is quite a lot of cloud. We could have highs | :23:00. | :23:06.
of 15 Celsius across eastern parts of our region. You can see the | :23:06. | :23:14.
speckled cloud that followed this morning. Some of these are quite | :23:14. | :23:22.
wintery. They will be confined to the Pennine areas as we work our | :23:22. | :23:32.
:23:32. | :23:44. | ||
way through the night. Temperatures Not a bad start. There will be a | :23:44. | :23:50.
few showers running into the Pennines. Later, drizzle for the | :23:50. | :23:55.
Yorkshire Dales but most of Yorkshire or looks set to have a | :23:55. | :24:01.
pleasant day. Cloud will gradually increase from the West through the | :24:01. | :24:06.
course of the day. It will still be quite breezy with temperatures | :24:06. | :24:16.
:24:16. | :24:18. | ||
expected to be close to average values, nine Celsius. The further | :24:18. | :24:25.
out to look, we have more cloud and drizzle. The best of the sunshine | :24:25. | :24:29.
drizzle. The best of the sunshine in the east. Temperatures rising by | :24:29. | :24:39.

the end of the weekend. Let's go back to Halifax now. | :24:39. | :24:44.
Joining me is Niccolo Reiss who has spent a lot of time with the | :24:44. | :24:49.
regiment but also can bring us with the latest. This was a heavily | :24:49. | :24:57.
armoured Warrior tank that was carrying six soldiers in Helmand | :24:57. | :25:05.
province. This was a serious explosion, attributed to the | :25:05. | :25:11.
Taliban. An explosive device there was developed and well placed. The | :25:11. | :25:16.
wreckage of that vehicle and the remains of the bodies has been | :25:16. | :25:21.
taken back to Camp Bastion. We are talking about and isn't that is the | :25:21. | :25:25.
worst enemy attack on British forces since operations began out | :25:25. | :25:31.
there. A sad time for the country but felt here where five of those | :25:31. | :25:36.
soldiers were recruited. You have formed an association with that | :25:36. | :25:41.
regiment. You have been training with them as they prepare the other | :25:42. | :25:48.
soldiers going out to Afghanistan. I have spent some time in Wiltshire | :25:48. | :25:53.
where three -- where they are based. They are all recruited from | :25:53. | :25:59.
Yorkshire bed based in Wiltshire. I had an opportunity to see them | :25:59. | :26:03.
training and getting ready for deployment to Afghanistan. Today, | :26:04. | :26:08. |
