Good evening and welcome to Wednesday's Look North. On the

:00:06.:00:11.

programme tonight: The four people from Yorkshire convicted for their

:00:11.:00:14.

parts in a case of modern day slavery.

:00:14.:00:16.

We will hear from a charity helping the young woman to recover.

:00:16.:00:19.

Also tonight: The cost to Sheffield of hosting the Tour de France will

:00:19.:00:23.

reach nearly £1 million, so is it worth it? And yes from Sheffield

:00:23.:00:33.

Council which became the last in our region to approve its share of the

:00:33.:00:39.

funding. It is geared to enter with a sprint finish at Sheffield Arena

:00:39.:00:45.

in nine months' time. And the plants are in, so a historic

:00:45.:00:49.

South Yorkshire treasure is nearly ready for the public once again.

:00:49.:00:54.

A windy day to come tomorrow in coastal areas. More to come in 20

:00:54.:01:04.

minutes. Six people, including four from

:01:04.:01:06.

Bradford, have been convicted in connection with the trafficking of a

:01:06.:01:10.

young woman who was kidnapped and held as a slave. The victim was

:01:10.:01:15.

taken from Slovakia to Burnley where she was beaten, raped and sold for

:01:15.:01:19.

marriage. Police have described it as a case of modern day slavery. In

:01:19.:01:25.

a moment, we will hear from the charity helping the woman to

:01:25.:01:28.

recover. First here's our crime correspondent.

:01:28.:01:35.

The houses in Bradford where the victim of a horrifying ordeal was

:01:36.:01:42.

held prisoner for two weeks in the summer of last year. Began last

:01:42.:01:47.

August in this Slovakian town. A 20—year—old woman on a night out

:01:47.:01:52.

with friends was kidnapped and plied with alcohol by a 44—year—old who

:01:52.:01:57.

had been living in Bradford. He was forced —— she was forced to travel

:01:57.:02:02.

on a court, thinking she was being taken to the Czech Republic to work.

:02:02.:02:06.

Instead, she was taken to London, then Bradford, then a house above a

:02:06.:02:13.

shop in Burnley. There, she was sold to a 34—year—old shop worker. He

:02:13.:02:19.

held her prisoner, allegedly repeatedly raping and assaulting

:02:19.:02:28.

her. It is alleged that she was forced into a sham marriage. He

:02:28.:02:35.

wanted a wife to prevent being deported back to Pakistan.

:02:35.:02:41.

Prosecutors said the case sounded like something from a 19th—century

:02:41.:02:43.

Charles Dickens novel. The woman had been passed around the continent in

:02:43.:02:48.

this country like a commodity, scared and unable to speak English.

:02:48.:02:52.

She could have done nothing to protect herself. This is modern—day

:02:52.:02:58.

slavery in the 21st—century. We must do all we can to support victims and

:02:58.:03:07.

prosecute offenders. The men who held the victim in Bradford have

:03:07.:03:13.

been convicted of trafficking are for exploitation. Two other men also

:03:13.:03:23.

kept the woman in Washington Street. They helped provide a link for sham

:03:23.:03:29.

marriages with people from Eastern Europe. Police were able to release

:03:30.:03:37.

the victim after someone in the community raised the alarm. She

:03:37.:03:39.

later described her terrifying experience. I was so scared for my

:03:39.:03:46.

life. Many times I wanted to run away. Because of what the bad people

:03:46.:03:52.

told me, I didn't know where to run, where to go or I could trust. Was

:03:52.:03:56.

convicted today will be sentenced tomorrow. A final end to the

:03:56.:04:05.

appalling case of a young woman from Slovakia.

:04:05.:04:07.

The Medaille Trust helps victims of trafficking and has been involved in

:04:07.:04:10.

this case. I asked Mike Emberson from the Trust how the woman is

:04:10.:04:16.

coping. Well, obviously everyone reacts differently, but it would be

:04:16.:04:20.

fairly typical for this to be a major trauma in this young woman's

:04:20.:04:24.

life. Her life would have been destroyed, really. Part of our job

:04:24.:04:33.

was to get her help to rebuild her life. It is not the first time we

:04:33.:04:41.

have heard of trafficking in Bradford and elsewhere. How

:04:41.:04:45.

widespread could this be? It is a criminal activity which is

:04:45.:04:50.

underground. It is difficult to get exact figures, but anything up to

:04:50.:04:55.

4000 young women could be involved in something like this. Why didn't

:04:55.:05:01.

she tried to escape or contact the police? It was a very courageous

:05:01.:05:06.

thing she has done to cooperate with the police. Very many people in this

:05:06.:05:09.

situation are absolutely terrified of the people who have trafficked

:05:09.:05:16.

them. Be perhaps fear their own lives or those of their family. It

:05:16.:05:23.

is very difficult to do. How common is it for a case like this to come

:05:23.:05:30.

to trial? This is a tremendous success by the Crown Prosecution

:05:30.:05:34.

Service and the police. Through the courage of this lady. Most cases

:05:35.:05:40.

unfortunately do not come to court. Thank you for speaking with us.

:05:40.:05:42.

Sheffield Council says hosting the Tour de France will cost taxpayers

:05:42.:05:44.

almost £1 million. Stage two of like marketing, road resurfacing,

:05:44.:05:54.

even the fee for race organisers. Councils across the region face a

:05:54.:05:59.

bill of 11 million. Some people are critical of the price—tag but

:05:59.:06:02.

Sheffield council is confident it will be value for money. Our

:06:02.:06:08.

reporter is in Sheffield this evening.

:06:08.:06:17.

It will be six July next year when Yorkshire's stage of the Tour de

:06:17.:06:25.

France ends here at the Sheffield Arena. The tour will come out of

:06:25.:06:33.

West Yorkshire, and then on into Sheffield. They are expecting a

:06:33.:06:40.

sprint finish, but it is a marathon to prepare. Sheffield council is

:06:40.:06:45.

having to put in £900,000. It says the investment is definitely

:06:45.:06:49.

worthwhile. It is not the first time Sheffield

:06:49.:06:54.

has hosted a major cycling event. This was the tour of Britain eight

:06:54.:07:00.

years ago. The Tour de France is something else. The council say it

:07:00.:07:05.

is worth the investment. It is the biggest annual sporting event in the

:07:05.:07:11.

world. Third biggest after the Olympics and the World Cup. We

:07:11.:07:15.

expect 250,000 people to line the route in Sheffield. This is huge.

:07:15.:07:26.

The overall cost is £21 million. The government is putting in 10 million.

:07:26.:07:29.

The rest will be made up by the councils on the route. They can hang

:07:29.:07:38.

their bike up here. In Sheffield, they are getting prepared. This

:07:38.:07:43.

hotel is installing bike racks. 65% of the rooms across the city are put

:07:43.:07:48.

out already. When it last came to the UK in Kent, the estimated

:07:48.:08:02.

economic value was anything up to £40 million. Even if you cut that in

:08:02.:08:06.

half, the financial benefit to the region will be huge. The council

:08:06.:08:13.

reckons those benefits could total £50 million. Not everyone is so

:08:13.:08:19.

sure. There is far more in Sheffield that needs urgent attention. When

:08:19.:08:24.

you look at the tourist attractions and put it will local economy, I

:08:24.:08:27.

think it will more than pay for itself. It is disgusting. Our

:08:27.:08:37.

council always wastes money. No surprise. It is the legacy for

:08:38.:08:49.

Sheffield in terms of the investment in cycling. It is an investment in

:08:49.:08:55.

our future. With nine months left to go, there is likely to be plenty

:08:55.:09:03.

more debate. We cannot overlook one white elephant in the room. The Don

:09:03.:09:07.

Valley Stadium just round the corner from you was built for the world

:09:07.:09:14.

student games and closed last week. The council say roads in this region

:09:14.:09:20.

and across the city has to be resurfaced. In a fortnight, we

:09:20.:09:28.

should get more detail about exactly which streets will be used for the

:09:28.:09:30.

event. It has sparked a lot of debate on

:09:30.:09:34.

our Facebook page. Rachel Linley asks: Why isn't the Tour de France

:09:34.:09:38.

organisation paying for this? I would much prefer it this money was

:09:38.:09:41.

put into keeping our local libraries and community spaces open. Peter

:09:41.:09:44.

Robertshaw thinks: It is great! Let's show off our city, and provide

:09:45.:09:48.

an amazing chance for hundreds of thousands of people to watch and be

:09:48.:09:51.

inspired. And Graham Bacon commented: Wouldn't the money be

:09:51.:09:53.

better spent providing services from the council which have been reduced?

:09:53.:10:00.

Later on Look North: We'll be talking to a new World Champion.

:10:00.:10:04.

Joe Morley from Leeds picked up the title for extreme kayaking. He'll be

:10:04.:10:07.

joining us with his kayak in a few minutes.

:10:07.:10:15.

Residents from across Yorkshire have joined forces to fight plans to

:10:16.:10:19.

build thousands of new homes, with fears green—belt land is at risk in

:10:19.:10:22.

future. The regional supergroup was launched as many of our councils

:10:22.:10:25.

consider how to meet controversial house—building targets. This follows

:10:25.:10:29.

claims by the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England that

:10:29.:10:35.

large areas of protected land are under threat. Our reporter is here

:10:35.:10:38.

with the details. There's no disputing there's a real

:10:38.:10:45.

need for new housing in Yorkshire. Government estimates suggest to keep

:10:45.:10:48.

up with current demand, 133,000 new homes need to be built in Yorkshire

:10:48.:10:55.

before 2021. That's more than 16,000 every year. More than 258,000 people

:10:55.:11:17.

are on local authority waiting lists. So is the green belt at risk

:11:17.:11:20.

as a result? Campaigners estimate 46,000 homes could be built on

:11:20.:11:24.

protected spaces in future and they are getting ready to fight it.

:11:24.:11:27.

There are many campaign groups in this region fighting to protect

:11:27.:11:31.

green belt from development. They have formed a supergroup. We need

:11:31.:11:40.

these green spaces to stop the spread of towns and cities engulfing

:11:40.:11:48.

these green and pleasant land is. Once they build on them, they don't

:11:48.:11:55.

come back. This is green belt land a few miles outside of Leeds city

:11:55.:12:01.

centre. Open countryside which would be protected. However, local

:12:01.:12:05.

councils can release areas have green belt to build on if they

:12:05.:12:11.

decide there is a demand for housing and no suitable Brownfield sites.

:12:11.:12:31.

Leeds City Council dispute that estimate. They argue there are not

:12:31.:12:39.

enough Brownfield sites and some green belt will need to be used. Our

:12:39.:12:44.

view is we should minimise how much green belt land. Can you not avoid

:12:44.:12:53.

it completely? I don't think we can because cities need to grow. If

:12:53.:12:57.

you're not careful, all we will have will be suburban sprawl without

:12:57.:13:08.

green spaces in the inner—city. We need to respect communities and

:13:08.:13:12.

their identities. This week, government inspector is examining

:13:12.:13:17.

plans for developing leads over the next 15 years. With the council

:13:17.:13:21.

claiming 70,000 new homes are needed, the road for green belt is

:13:21.:13:32.

likely to intensify. A family from Killamarsh in

:13:32.:13:35.

Derbyshire has joined a protest at Westminster to call for changes to

:13:35.:13:39.

the way relatives of those who die abroad are treated. The parents of

:13:39.:13:40.

17—year—old 17—year—old Matthew Cryer joined

:13:40.:13:41.

other families at the died on the Greek island of Zante in

:13:41.:13:48.

2008. An inquest in Britain found he'd been unlawfully killed but

:13:48.:13:58.

no—one has been convicted. Evidence from this country could be

:13:58.:14:05.

used abroad and that makes sense. At the moment, it cannot and there is

:14:05.:14:10.

no basis in law. I would like to see more cooperation between countries.

:14:10.:14:15.

The MP for Barnsley Central has been given a new role in the Labour

:14:15.:14:18.

Party. Dan Jarvis has been appointed Shadow minister for Youth Justice

:14:18.:14:21.

and Victims. He had previously served as the Shadow Culture

:14:21.:14:24.

Minister. Major investment has been secured

:14:24.:14:27.

for a regeneration project in the Rossington area of Doncaster. A

:14:27.:14:29.

North American company will provide private funding for an inland port

:14:29.:14:33.

to help speed up the delivery of freight, and ease pressure on

:14:33.:14:35.

coastal ports. Doncaster Council says it will create around 5,000

:14:35.:14:46.

jobs and be complete by 2015. It has taken ten years and more than

:14:46.:14:50.

£3 million but next month the Grade Two listed Wentworth Castle

:14:50.:14:53.

Conservatory at Barnsley will open to the public once more. A

:14:53.:14:55.

spectacular example of Victorian architecture, the glasshouse was in

:14:55.:14:58.

a terrible state until a campaign was launched to save it. And today

:14:58.:15:02.

there was a special moment as planting began. Our reporter went

:15:02.:15:13.

along. At Wentworth Castle Conservatory,

:15:13.:15:16.

they have waited ten years for this moment. Putting in the first planned

:15:16.:15:22.

in the newly restored conservatory. For head gardener, Michael, it is a

:15:22.:15:31.

special moment. These plants are all from the period of the house. They

:15:31.:15:34.

represent different parts of the world. We are very proud. James

:15:34.:15:45.

Buckley was head gardener when the conservatory was built in 1885.

:15:45.:15:50.

These photographs help to show how gloriously plants were in its

:15:50.:15:56.

heyday. But in latter years, it became a crumbling structure. Its

:15:56.:16:01.

plight featured on the BBC's restoration programme in 2003. Over

:16:01.:16:12.

500 people donated money to make it possible to restore the

:16:12.:16:15.

conservatory. Without that sort of help, it would not have been

:16:15.:16:20.

possible. Without individual support and commitment, we would not have

:16:20.:16:24.

felt encouraged to keep going for the ten years it has taken. It has

:16:24.:16:29.

been the help from dozens of volunteers like these three people

:16:29.:16:34.

which has made the transformation possible. It will be good for the

:16:34.:16:46.

area. It is fantastic. It is something to be proud of. When

:16:46.:16:57.

besotted with scaffolding before, to see it now, it is fantastic. It is

:16:57.:16:59.

not much of an exaggeration to say that this restoration project has

:16:59.:17:03.

been a decade of blood, sweat and tears. But next month this Barnsley

:17:03.:17:08.

treasure will open once again, meaning that something that was so

:17:08.:17:12.

nearly lost can be enjoyed by generations to come.

:17:12.:17:25.

I loved that jumper! And there'll be much more on the

:17:25.:17:28.

restoration of Wentworth Castle with Tony Foster at Breakfast on Radio

:17:28.:17:30.

Sheffield tomorrow. Before 7pm: Bradford's mirror pool

:17:30.:17:42.

as you've never seen it. Come back and join us because

:17:42.:17:51.

Bradford is vying for an the curry capital and this whole place will be

:17:51.:17:53.

lit up. Football now, and a manager's future

:17:53.:17:57.

rarely depends on the outcome of a second round tie in the Johnstone's

:17:57.:18:09.

Paint Trophy. But last night could prove to be an exception. Sheffield

:18:09.:18:12.

United, who are struggling near the foot of League One, lost at home to

:18:12.:18:16.

a side from the bottom division leaving boss David Weir clinging on

:18:16.:18:18.

to his job. He didn't look happy before the game

:18:18.:18:21.

last night. What followed would not improve his mood. It might have been

:18:21.:18:25.

different, had this curling for the blades gone in. When you are

:18:25.:18:34.

out of form, it feels like you are also out of luck. Hartlepool,

:18:34.:18:37.

struggling themselves in the league below Sheffield United, scored the

:18:37.:18:41.

only goal of the game shortly before half—time. James Poole, unmarked in

:18:41.:18:48.

the penalty area, had time to place his volley. Since David Weir took

:18:48.:18:52.

charge in the summer, his team have won only two of 13 matches. 4000

:18:52.:18:57.

fans made their feelings known last night. His feelings were also on

:18:57.:19:07.

display as he was interviewed by BBC Radio Sheffield's reporter. I was

:19:07.:19:16.

disappointed. The players were equally disappointed. Do you feel it

:19:16.:19:27.

is embarrassing to have this run of results? Yes. I have had no feedback

:19:27.:19:33.

from the hierarchy tonight. Do you resign? No.

:19:33.:19:41.

He has said he will not walk away, but whether he will stay could be a

:19:41.:19:47.

decision is taken out of his hands. There were two other games involving

:19:47.:19:50.

our teams in last night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Rotherham

:19:50.:19:53.

United beat York City with the help of a Chris Smith own goal.

:19:53.:19:54.

Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Rotherham United beat York City with the Alex

:19:55.:19:56.

Revell's powerful header completed a 3—0 victory.

:19:56.:20:02.

Chesterfield also progressed to the third round by beating local rivals

:20:02.:20:05.

Mansfield thanks to the only goal of the game by Gary McSheffrey.

:20:06.:20:12.

We are about to meet a new World Champion from Yorkshire and his mum.

:20:12.:20:21.

The sport is extreme kayaking. Joe Morley from Leeds won the event in

:20:21.:20:24.

Austria at the weekend. And if you're wondering exactly what kind

:20:24.:20:28.

of work it involves, here's a bit of a taster for you.

:20:28.:20:38.

I am on my knees as a mark of respect. This is a fantastic event

:20:38.:21:18.

to win. How do you do it? You just have to slide off and paddle as fast

:21:18.:21:24.

as you can! You are six foot three, is it tight inside? It is, but you

:21:24.:21:32.

need it to be like that so you can control the

:21:32.:21:42.

possible. Your parents have sacrificed a lot? Yes, the whole way

:21:42.:21:49.

through my career. They have driven me around the country and sorted me

:21:49.:21:56.

out with a car in later life. To think that your lad has out—paddled

:21:56.:22:05.

150 other competitors, you must be so proud? Very proud. I know you

:22:05.:22:15.

watched it lies in your living room on the internets. Was it like? Nerve

:22:15.:22:21.

wracking. We daren't look. When he got to the bottom, we were jumping

:22:21.:22:25.

up and down and screaming. It was fantastic. It is a scary thing to

:22:25.:22:37.

watch, I imagine? It is, but we have every confidence in him. Didn't you

:22:37.:22:49.

downsize for him? We did, but it is no different to what other people do

:22:49.:22:53.

to get their child is to university. When you know you're child has a

:22:53.:22:58.

talent, you do you can get behind them. This belt is proof of our

:22:58.:23:05.

fantastic achievement. We look forward to seeing you again next

:23:05.:23:10.

year when you get your world champion title again.

:23:10.:23:13.

Bradford third year running. To mark the

:23:13.:23:20.

launch of the bid, City Park's mirror pool is being turned into a

:23:20.:23:23.

huge pot of ingredients. The event coincides with another arts event

:23:24.:23:26.

celebrating the work of writer Sylvia Plath, using state of the art

:23:26.:23:29.

video projection. It promises to look amazing. Our reporter is in

:23:30.:23:43.

Bradford to tell us more. Nothing goes according to plan on

:23:43.:23:48.

live television. It is supposed to be lit up behind me but it is not

:23:48.:23:52.

ready yet. There have been technical problems. One of the other big

:23:52.:23:57.

events that is happening is the bid to become curry capital of the UK.

:23:57.:24:07.

We want to make it a hat—trick. It would be a fantastic achievement to

:24:07.:24:12.

win for a third year running. We have done something special this

:24:12.:24:26.

year. There will be a new flavour of crisps to celebrate. Why is this

:24:26.:24:35.

title so important? No one has ever won it three years running. We have

:24:35.:24:38.

worked really hard. We really want is. It is also about the economy? It

:24:39.:24:45.

is. Also encouragement for other restaurants to work hard and

:24:45.:24:48.

showcase exactly what we can do. We all know that Bradford is the place

:24:48.:24:59.

to come for a good curry. Bradford are the rightful owners! You are one

:24:59.:25:05.

of the artists involved in light display this evening. It is based on

:25:05.:25:13.

a quote by Sylvia Plath. We wanted to create an artwork that referenced

:25:13.:25:24.

how Bradford city uses this pool. Are you confident it will happen

:25:24.:25:29.

this evening? It is all starting. As it gets darker, it gets brighter and

:25:29.:25:34.

brighter. This is the preview. Tomorrow night, please come and walk

:25:34.:25:38.

through this. Exist in the projections.

:25:38.:25:44.

Don't you get frustrated when you can't see what they are talking
