Welcome to Wednesday's Look North. Tonight ` killed after less than a

:00:00.:00:00.

month in Afghanistan ` the six members of the Yorkshire Regiment's

:00:07.:00:10.

third Battalion ` victims of the deadliest single attack on UK forces

:00:11.:00:19.

since 2001. Also tonight: A community in grief instead of

:00:20.:00:22.

celebrating Eid ` a Rotherham butcher murdered in his shop is

:00:23.:00:28.

mourned. He was a nice guy. He was pleasant

:00:29.:00:41.

and that. He would welcome anybody. Join me later, a trip back in time

:00:42.:00:46.

to 30 years ago when this shopping centre opened in Wakefield. It was a

:00:47.:00:54.

grey day at Bolton Abbey. Tomorrow is a brighter prospects. Join me

:00:55.:00:56.

later for the detailed forecast. Tonight ` a teenage soldier killed

:00:57.:01:07.

alongside five colleagues in a bomb blast in Afghanistan, was a

:01:08.:01:11.

last`minute stand`in. Private Christopher Kershaw from Bradford

:01:12.:01:14.

had volunteered to take the place of a colleague, driving the Warrior

:01:15.:01:19.

armoured vehicle. He died alongside Sergeant Nigel Coupe, Corporal Jake

:01:20.:01:21.

Hartley, and Privates Anthony Frampton, Daniel Wade and Daniel

:01:22.:01:29.

Wilford.. All from the Yorkshire Regiment's third battalion. It was

:01:30.:01:33.

the Taliban's single deadliest enemy attack since operations began in

:01:34.:01:38.

Afghanistan. Today an inquest in Oxford was told that the explosion

:01:39.:01:41.

was so powerful it turned the vehicle upside down. All the men

:01:42.:01:45.

were either killed outright or knocked unconscious in the blast in

:01:46.:01:49.

March last year. They had been in Afghanistan less than a month.

:01:50.:01:56.

Robert Hall's been at the hearing. There are six tragic stories here

:01:57.:02:02.

but because of private Kershaw's age, that was what shocks more

:02:03.:02:05.

people when the news of the deaths broke. He wasn't supposed to be on

:02:06.:02:12.

the warrior. We heard today from one of his colleagues, a private two

:02:13.:02:20.

said the original driver was not available, he was on his way back

:02:21.:02:25.

from the shower and Christopher Kershaw always keen to be out there

:02:26.:02:30.

and keen to be doing his best volunteered to drive the vehicle. It

:02:31.:02:34.

was to be his last patrol. His mother is here to listen to the

:02:35.:02:41.

evidence. She has talked about how difficult it is for her. She said

:02:42.:02:45.

it's not about going through everything and bring everything back

:02:46.:02:51.

up but it is about closure, it will be a very difficult couple of days.

:02:52.:02:58.

What else do the inquest tell us? We have been hearing about the

:02:59.:03:03.

sequence of events on the March day last year, a routine patrol, the two

:03:04.:03:11.

warriors on a patrol which took them to a crossroads under which this

:03:12.:03:15.

large improvised explosive device roadside bomb was planted. We have

:03:16.:03:21.

heard evidence the bomb was so large it blew the warrior on its side and

:03:22.:03:28.

blew off the gun turret and caused a large fire. Luke stones who talked

:03:29.:03:32.

about Christopher Kershaw was travelling in the warrior behind

:03:33.:03:39.

K`12 and he said they felt the blast, huge fireball 45 yards in

:03:40.:03:46.

front of them. They had run forward to try to help but it was a fire

:03:47.:03:55.

which was big. Very difficult time for them, the pathologist evidence

:03:56.:04:01.

we had today suggested the explosion was so large that it probably killed

:04:02.:04:08.

the soldiers or blended them unconscious almost immediately. The

:04:09.:04:13.

Ministry of Defence said that this warrior vehicle, even with its

:04:14.:04:19.

armour, any armoured vehicle in an explosion of this size can not be

:04:20.:04:24.

totally protected. A traumatic day for those involved. The inquest is

:04:25.:04:30.

expected to end tomorrow. Some breaking news now and armed police

:04:31.:04:33.

are dealing with what's been described as a major incident in the

:04:34.:04:36.

centre of Knaresborough tonight. It's near the St James' Retail Park.

:04:37.:04:40.

Police have not said exactly what is happening but an amateur cameraman

:04:41.:04:42.

recorded these pictures of someone being arrested at gunpoint a short

:04:43.:04:46.

time ago. People living and working in the area around the High Street

:04:47.:04:50.

have been told to stay inside their buildings. There are no reports of

:04:51.:04:53.

any injuries but the incident is said to be continuing. Traffic is

:04:54.:05:01.

being diverted away from the area. There are huge disruptions.

:05:02.:05:05.

A butcher who was stabbed to death in his shop in Rotherham has been

:05:06.:05:09.

described as a man at the heart of his community. Parvaiz Iqbal was a

:05:10.:05:13.

40`year`old father of three boys. He died in the shop in the Eastwood

:05:14.:05:18.

area yesterday. Tom Ingall's there now.

:05:19.:05:27.

It is almost 30 hours since the popular shopkeeper on Grosvenor Road

:05:28.:05:34.

in Rotherham was murdered and another man seriously injured. At

:05:35.:05:38.

the front of the shop, you can't quite see it, there is a pile of

:05:39.:05:43.

flowers which has been growing. There is a sense of disbelief in the

:05:44.:05:47.

community tonight, people are uncertain about what happened and

:05:48.:05:53.

why and it is muting celebrations on what should be a special day. This

:05:54.:05:59.

should be a day of celebration. For many, today is the deed

:06:00.:06:04.

Festival. Families of returning as mourners. There is no joy in

:06:05.:06:10.

greetings on the street. Look around you, in the mosques... That business

:06:11.:06:24.

has been there for 30 years. It's a long time. Everyone used to say

:06:25.:06:33.

hello. He was a bubbly guy. Parvaiz Iqbal, a father of three was

:06:34.:06:36.

attacked and killed in his shop yesterday. Another man was seriously

:06:37.:06:42.

injured. He is still in hospital. He was a nice guy, I'd tell you the

:06:43.:06:49.

truth. He was pleasant. He would welcome anybody, no matter who. He

:06:50.:07:00.

was a nice guy. It is spoiled for everybody, especially his three

:07:01.:07:04.

young kids. And his mother and family. Really upset. As the police

:07:05.:07:10.

cordon is lifted, we have a clearer idea of the size of the attack and

:07:11.:07:15.

what Ken only be seen as vicious frenzy. There are lots of broken

:07:16.:07:23.

glass and around the corner the barber shop is closed, the windows

:07:24.:07:26.

smashed and it leads back to the police van. No other details have

:07:27.:07:34.

been confirmed yet about the weapon used, postmortem examination was

:07:35.:07:38.

carried out this afternoon. For those who came to pray and remember

:07:39.:07:42.

their friend and relative, the details are perhaps unimportant.

:07:43.:07:46.

Their grief has clouded everything, even this most spiritual of days.

:07:47.:07:52.

Police arrested a 27`year`old man and he was arrested a mile away from

:07:53.:07:56.

here at Tesco in the heart of Rotherham. He remains in custody, he

:07:57.:08:02.

is being questioned and still a lots of police activity, not just on

:08:03.:08:07.

Grosvenor Road but in the whole area, a couple of patrol cars and

:08:08.:08:12.

mounted patrols. Police want to get the message out that the community

:08:13.:08:20.

is safe. Thank you. Later on Look North: As unemployment falls

:08:21.:08:23.

Charlotte reports from a luxury lingerie business.

:08:24.:08:29.

This firm in Leeds makes bras and pants for some of the most famous

:08:30.:08:34.

women. Find out later why they are struggling to fulfil the order that

:08:35.:08:43.

are flooding in. First, there's a warning today of a

:08:44.:08:46.

mental health time bomb amongst sixth form students in Yorkshire.

:08:47.:08:49.

The Deputy Head of one of York's leading schools says he's convinced

:08:50.:08:52.

more students are suffering with depression and anxiety because of

:08:53.:08:55.

pressure to do well in their exams. He's predicting that government

:08:56.:08:58.

reforms to A`Levels will make the situation worse. Here's Spencer

:08:59.:09:01.

Stokes. Is there too much pressure on

:09:02.:09:08.

A`level students? This School in York achieved its best ever grades

:09:09.:09:14.

but back came at a cost. The deputy head says recently he's seen a big

:09:15.:09:18.

rise in pupils suffering with mental health issues. He is linking it to

:09:19.:09:21.

the expert patient that exam candidates will succeed. This is

:09:22.:09:27.

stress, anxiety, different behaviours, OCD, food problems and

:09:28.:09:35.

sometimes when it gets really bad, depression where they cannot

:09:36.:09:38.

recognise themselves, there is a dullness and sadness and they behave

:09:39.:09:43.

in ways they would not normally and they cannot sleep. This isn't unique

:09:44.:09:49.

to this school. Their lives in Leeds and found the pressure to do well

:09:50.:09:53.

too much. She turns to self harm to take away the worry of the exams. My

:09:54.:09:59.

head felt like it would explode. I resorted to scratching myself in an

:10:00.:10:05.

angry and frustrated phase and realised the pain and the stuff I

:10:06.:10:11.

got out of that, I can't explain it but it took me away for a few

:10:12.:10:16.

seconds. Others have gone further, earlier this year a teenager took

:10:17.:10:21.

his own life while returning to boarding school. Jake jumped in

:10:22.:10:27.

front of a train at Northallerton cause of worries about studies.

:10:28.:10:32.

A`levels will be changed in three years but government plans to do

:10:33.:10:37.

away with ongoing assessment and in favour of one big exam will add to

:10:38.:10:42.

stress. The pressure I see on the students will build up and I wonder

:10:43.:10:47.

if we are in danger of creating a potential time bomb in the future

:10:48.:10:50.

because if they are worried and stressed now, it will be increased

:10:51.:10:55.

when you put the pressure on to a final exam. Beth found support

:10:56.:11:01.

through a charity and recommend students in a similar situation do

:11:02.:11:06.

the same. On results day, she got a is and bees.

:11:07.:11:13.

In the rest of the day's news, the Independent Police Complaints

:11:14.:11:15.

Commission has begun an investigation into a former

:11:16.:11:18.

Inspector with West Yorkshire Police over his dealings with Jimmy Savile.

:11:19.:11:21.

It comes after the release of a transcript of a Surrey police

:11:22.:11:25.

interview with Savile in 2009. In it he was questioned about

:11:26.:11:26.

inappropriate relationships with young girls. Savile denied the

:11:27.:11:30.

allegations and said he had a collection of senior police officers

:11:31.:11:33.

who came to see him socially, and dealt with any letters he received

:11:34.:11:45.

alleging abuse. Because of who he was, they swept aside. It gets swept

:11:46.:11:50.

under the carpet occurs they were scared of him, the great Sir Jimmy.

:11:51.:11:56.

He could do no wrong. Sheffield Wednesday striker Gary Madine is

:11:57.:11:59.

appealing against his 18`month prison sentence for attacking two

:12:00.:12:02.

men in nightclubs. Earlier this month the 23`year`old was found

:12:03.:12:04.

guilty of both attacks which happened in Sheffield city centre in

:12:05.:12:08.

February and March last year. A new major crime unit has been opened

:12:09.:12:11.

today by North Yorkshire Police. 31 officers will work from Harrogate

:12:12.:12:14.

Police station investigating murders, serious violence and sexual

:12:15.:12:18.

attacks. They'll also review unsolved cases like the

:12:19.:12:21.

disappearance of Marsha Wray from Harrogate in 1997. A new appeal has

:12:22.:12:27.

been launched today for information about what happened to her.

:12:28.:12:37.

Previously, if there were incidents on the weekend, we had to crowd

:12:38.:12:43.

resources, people who had different skill sets. This provides us with a

:12:44.:12:46.

good dynamic dedicated resource which can respond with expertise and

:12:47.:12:52.

skill which the people would expect in place in the 21st century. The

:12:53.:12:56.

latest jobs figures now and unemployment in Yorkshire has fallen

:12:57.:12:59.

this month, in line with the national trend. Figures for the

:13:00.:13:02.

three`month period between June and August show that there were 242

:13:03.:13:05.

thousand people without a job in Yorkshire and the Humber. That's

:13:06.:13:08.

6,000 fewer than the previous month. It means our unemployment rate has

:13:09.:13:11.

fallen slightly to 8.8%, but that remains the third highest in the

:13:12.:13:16.

country. One company who'd love to see those

:13:17.:13:20.

figures fall further is Leeds luxury lingerie firm, Something Wicked.

:13:21.:13:25.

That's because they're got orders for underwear from around the world,

:13:26.:13:28.

but can't find the skilled machinists they need to make them.

:13:29.:13:32.

Their designer's made pants for American pop star Lady Gaga and The

:13:33.:13:37.

Sugarbabes. And the company's desperate to find seamstresses who

:13:38.:13:40.

can keep the orders flowing. Charlotte Leeming's been to see what

:13:41.:13:48.

they're looking for. In an unassuming room in Leeds, a

:13:49.:13:51.

small team is busy cutting, selling and stitching. With no fuss or

:13:52.:13:57.

fanfare and the parent of the machines, it is hard to believe this

:13:58.:14:01.

business is taking on the big fashion houses of Europe in

:14:02.:14:05.

manufacturing upmarket underwear. But the luxury laundry is being worn

:14:06.:14:10.

by some of the most famous women in the world. Lady Gaga and Beyonce are

:14:11.:14:15.

two of the stars who snapped up smalls something wicked. Despite

:14:16.:14:20.

this company receiving enquiries from all over the world, they are

:14:21.:14:24.

facing a big problem and that means they are turning orders down. These

:14:25.:14:28.

bras and pants are made from expensive materials, some items

:14:29.:14:33.

itself a hundreds of pounds but the firm is struggling to find machinist

:14:34.:14:39.

with the skills to make them. We are looking for someone with experience

:14:40.:14:42.

and passion to create something beautiful. Every piece has to be of

:14:43.:14:51.

the highest quality. We need the motivation to do that, create

:14:52.:14:56.

something time and time again. Most diverse when we are buying underwear

:14:57.:15:00.

get it off the high street and it doesn't cost much. What makes this

:15:01.:15:06.

so expensive? It is luxury in terms of the materials. With leather is

:15:07.:15:11.

Japanese and it is a by`product of the cow which produces reef. We use

:15:12.:15:20.

chantilly lace and chiffon. We use the best materials and it is

:15:21.:15:25.

handmade. The husband and wife team admit they are being suffered ``

:15:26.:15:29.

fussy for new staff that only the best will do. They are addressing

:15:30.:15:33.

some of the most desirable bottoms in the world!

:15:34.:15:46.

They are too hot for me! And tomorrow we'll be revisiting three

:15:47.:15:49.

people we've been following in their search for jobs. Six months ago

:15:50.:15:52.

Chris Smith, Timothy Hall and Natalie Hick were unemployed and

:15:53.:15:55.

despondent. We'll find out if they're still struggling or if

:15:56.:15:57.

they're some of those helping bringing yorkshire's unemployment

:15:58.:15:59.

rate down. Before seven o'clock: Flash, Bang,

:16:00.:16:03.

Wallop! We're joined by Tommy Steele ahead of his appearance as Scrooge

:16:04.:16:08.

in Leeds very soon. Tinkling the ivories ` the Yorkshire

:16:09.:16:11.

piano makers beating Far East firms in manufacturing prowess.

:16:12.:16:21.

It boasted the first food court in the UK, the first glass wall`climber

:16:22.:16:26.

lift and was designed so shoppers could enter it from the street on

:16:27.:16:29.

all levels. Tomorrow Wakefield's pioneering Ridings Shopping Centre

:16:30.:16:38.

celebrates its 30th birthday. It was to become a model that would be

:16:39.:16:42.

copied by towns and cities all over the UK. But recently competition's

:16:43.:16:45.

increased and times have been tough with some traders leaving. Ian White

:16:46.:16:53.

reports. When it opened in 1983, there was no

:16:54.:17:02.

place like it. The Ridings in Wakefield was a UK first, a new

:17:03.:17:06.

shopping experience based on an American shopping maul.

:17:07.:17:10.

It bought features in never seen in the UK before. The other centres

:17:11.:17:15.

followed suit. It was a good commercial success. In tough times,

:17:16.:17:20.

they queued around the block around the job centre for the vacancies at

:17:21.:17:22.

the Ridings. The finished building was like

:17:23.:17:25.

something never seen before. Complete with glass lift.

:17:26.:17:31.

The glass lift is long gone, it is a thing of the past but I've found

:17:32.:17:36.

something interesting. There are still people who work here who were

:17:37.:17:41.

here 30 years ago and I've met one of them.

:17:42.:17:45.

I remember coming to work in a Portakabin on the building site when

:17:46.:17:51.

the excavation started. It was hugely exciting, we have loyal

:17:52.:17:57.

customers, people who still love to come here and we try to keep things

:17:58.:18:02.

fresh and interesting. The last few years have been tough with big names

:18:03.:18:06.

leaving and moving to the new shopping complex Trinity walk.

:18:07.:18:13.

It has been trying. It is a difficult market, everybody knows

:18:14.:18:17.

that. We are trying to bring extra things here but we only have six

:18:18.:18:24.

vacant units. We are doing much better than the high street. What do

:18:25.:18:31.

shoppers think? It is handy, the car park is there. It needs upgrading.

:18:32.:18:41.

It used to amaze me when people came on bus trips here. It is not even

:18:42.:18:48.

that big. What started in Wakefield in 1983 has since been copied in

:18:49.:18:55.

towns all over Europe. Fantastic old footage. The trees

:18:56.:19:00.

brought in from Florida. That wouldn't happen now. The build up to

:19:01.:19:07.

the Rugby League World Cup continued today when a school in Doncaster got

:19:08.:19:10.

a flavour of the south seas. Children from Norton Primary School

:19:11.:19:13.

performed the Haka in front of visiting players from New Zealand

:19:14.:19:17.

and the Cook Islands. The two teams face each other in a friendly at the

:19:18.:19:20.

Keepmoat in Doncaster on Sunday. The rugby players returned the

:19:21.:19:23.

traditional Maori war cry before heading off to prepare for the

:19:24.:19:26.

match. It was wonderful. They this spent

:19:27.:19:34.

time practising, the teacher said they learned about the history and

:19:35.:19:40.

the lads were touched it. Yes, really good. It is a privilege to be

:19:41.:19:48.

doing it and watching them do it. A well spoken chap! Little white bull,

:19:49.:19:53.

singing the blues ` he has been a legend for over 50 years in show

:19:54.:19:57.

business. Indeed he was once described as Britain's answer to

:19:58.:20:00.

Elvis Presley. Tommy Steele is back in Yorkshire and still wowing

:20:01.:20:07.

audiences at the age of over 60! That is very nice of you! You know

:20:08.:20:12.

him as the star of musicals such as Half A Sixpence and Singin' in the

:20:13.:20:15.

Rain. And now he's taking on the title role in Scrooge The Musical at

:20:16.:20:19.

the Leeds Grand Theatre. We'll be speaking to him in a moment but

:20:20.:20:24.

first, here he is in action. # Half a sixpence is better than half

:20:25.:20:33.

shilling? Better than half a? Penny. Better than none.

:20:34.:20:44.

Tommy, welcome back to Yorkshire. You have been visiting family in

:20:45.:20:54.

Harehills. Harehills. It is wonderful to be back. I don't know

:20:55.:21:00.

why but it always rains when I come to Yorkshire. Unless I was watching

:21:01.:21:08.

a football match, the first division. We won't go into that. How

:21:09.:21:17.

challenging is the new musical? The best way you could call it is a song

:21:18.:21:22.

and dance man King Lear. You have to be a certain age to play King Lear,

:21:23.:21:28.

with Scrooge it is the same thing. Song and dance but at my age, it

:21:29.:21:36.

works very well. It is nice to see the old geezer going around the

:21:37.:21:42.

stage singing and dancing. You are normally the cheeky chappie lovable

:21:43.:21:47.

rogue so to play this role, ten years off and on, it is a miserable

:21:48.:21:56.

`` he is a miserable chap. Humbug! The producer took me out for a meal

:21:57.:22:02.

and said I have a great new musical for you, a Christmas Carol. I said,

:22:03.:22:10.

Bill, I am too old to play Bob Cratchit. He said, no, Scrooge!

:22:11.:22:19.

Made, and old man? Are you out of your mind? I am 65 years of age, of

:22:20.:22:26.

course I can play it. There was trepidation in rehearsals. But now

:22:27.:22:32.

he is my best friend. You love being on stage. That is

:22:33.:22:39.

what engages the audience. I do. I love it and I love them and

:22:40.:22:45.

I love orchestras and great songs and dance routines. I love beautiful

:22:46.:22:51.

stories and they are rare in someone's career but I have been

:22:52.:22:54.

lucky enough to be given great shows. This is one of them.

:22:55.:23:02.

You were a heart`throb and you still have it! Good luck with the show!

:23:03.:23:10.

Crawling. It's an industry in which Britain once dominated the world.

:23:11.:23:14.

Pianos were made at over two hundred factories around the country. Now

:23:15.:23:17.

just one remains. Hidden in the Yorkshire Dales ` Cavendish produce

:23:18.:23:21.

just fifty of the instruments a year but, they're now getting

:23:22.:23:23.

international recognition with orders from China and a chance at

:23:24.:23:26.

winning the most prestigious competition in the industry. Joe

:23:27.:23:29.

Inwood went to just what makes them so special.

:23:30.:23:42.

It is time`consuming, skilful, aircraft dating back hundreds of

:23:43.:23:47.

years. It has been a dying art but one being brought back to life in

:23:48.:23:52.

the Yorkshire Dales. We have gone from strength to

:23:53.:23:57.

strength. There is a waiting list, it is a hand produced ides. We are

:23:58.:24:05.

small Artisans working slowly to produce finely tuned instruments.

:24:06.:24:11.

It is a far cry from the way most demos are made. China and Japan lead

:24:12.:24:17.

the market. Compare that Cavendish who make just 50. But small, they

:24:18.:24:30.

say, can sound beautiful. The process of being a musician is

:24:31.:24:34.

emotional and takes time, effort and skill. It is equally rewarding to

:24:35.:24:40.

know I am playing an instrument which has been crafted and

:24:41.:24:43.

Manufacturing to a high specification.

:24:44.:24:47.

And those qualities are being recognised with a nomination for a

:24:48.:24:53.

music industry award as the worlds best acoustic piano.

:24:54.:24:58.

The other pianos are large, multinational corporations, we are

:24:59.:25:02.

the first British piano to feature in the awards which is great for us

:25:03.:25:08.

and the music industry and for piano building in the UK because we hope

:25:09.:25:14.

we are the first of many piano manufacturers.

:25:15.:25:21.

And so if the glory days of British pianos return, it will have started

:25:22.:25:24.

at a family firm from the Dales. Wonderful stuff. Are you musical?

:25:25.:25:40.

No, I played the guitar but I broke my finger in crickets before the

:25:41.:25:45.

exam. I played the triangle, that is how

:25:46.:25:54.

much they trusted me. A beautiful sunrise in Filey. That

:25:55.:25:56.

was taken at 7am. A beautiful sunrise in Filey. That

:25:57.:26:03.

was I think that is nice. A bit of colour. Keep your pictures coming

:26:04.:26:12.

in. Tomorrow, the best day of the week, brighter with sunny spells but

:26:13.:26:17.

only because we are in between weather systems. The next feature

:26:18.:26:23.

will bring rain later in the day on Friday so wet but tomorrow looks

:26:24.:26:28.

brighter with sunshine. The active weather front brought miserable

:26:29.:26:33.

weather, it is clearing from the South West, Cloud bringing rain

:26:34.:26:37.

across the West and North of Yorkshire. Showers follow in from

:26:38.:26:44.

the west, a strong and gusty wind for a time, lowest temperatures

:26:45.:26:53.

eight or nine degrees Celsius. The sun rises at 7:37am. A bright start

:26:54.:27:01.

in Filey with sunshine, further west, showers over the Pennines

fading and the many bright mostly dry with an increasing amount of

:27:08.:27:15.

sunshine. A tonic compared to today. Temperatures are a little above

:27:16.:27:23.

average for October. Further ahead, Friday looks cloudy, rain later and

:27:24.:27:28.

the weekend, sunny spells and scattered showers.

:27:29.:27:34.

That is as far as we go. We told you about Knaresborough and

:27:35.:27:41.

we are sending news teams there. All of the information at 10:25pm. Good

:27:42.:27:43.

night. You ask us to get behind you

:27:44.:28:13.

and why should we? You're punching above

:28:14.:28:15.

your weight, aren't you? He wouldn't do that to me because

:28:16.:28:17.

he wasn't that sort of a man.
