Welcome to Wednesday's Look North as Yorkshire celebrates the Tour De | :00:00. | :00:11.
France. I'm in Cragg Vale in Calderdale, which has been | :00:12. | :00:14.
officially named on the route for next year's Grand Depart. Thousands | :00:15. | :00:19.
of journalists were at the launch event in Paris with Yorkshire's | :00:20. | :00:29.
finest scenery on display. Paul Ogden is live in the French Capital, | :00:30. | :00:32.
we'll also hear from the sport's biggest names as Yorkshire tells the | :00:33. | :00:44.
world it's ready. Nous sommes prets. We'll also show you just how | :00:45. | :00:48.
close the Tour will be coming to your town. | :00:49. | :00:50.
Also tonight, four people charged in Greece in connection with the death | :00:51. | :00:53.
of a South Yorkshire teenager on the island of Zante. | :00:54. | :00:56.
More than 1,200 jobs to go at Doncaster Council ` which may also | :00:57. | :01:00.
sell off all its elderly day care centres. | :01:01. | :01:01.
A heavyweight sporting appointment ` Sheffield United name Brian Clough's | :01:02. | :01:09.
son Nigel as their new manager. And the sunshine was out today. | :01:10. | :01:15.
There will be more sunshine for all of us tomorrow. I will be back with | :01:16. | :01:31.
the full forecast later. Good evening from the Robin Hood Lane in | :01:32. | :01:43.
crowd `` in Cragg Vale. People are excited because it has been | :01:44. | :01:47.
confirmed that this will be part of the Grand Depart. They are quite | :01:48. | :01:52.
excited. Outside this pub is an incline, the longest in England. | :01:53. | :01:59.
More than 1000 metres high and over five miles. We will hear more about | :02:00. | :02:04.
that later in the programme. We'll also be show you exactly where the | :02:05. | :02:11.
street `` where the route goes. The first of all, Paul Ogden has been at | :02:12. | :02:15.
the launch event in Paris. We now cross to him live. An exciting day | :02:16. | :02:21.
for Yorkshire? An exciting day for all of us, | :02:22. | :02:26.
Nikki. Today is the closest we have ever come to having our own French | :02:27. | :02:31.
version of Yorkshire Day here in the French capital. What happened over | :02:32. | :02:36.
the road is something that happens every year. A preview of the next | :02:37. | :02:43.
year's official Tour De France route. But never before and perhaps | :02:44. | :02:47.
never again will there have been so much Yorkshire influence on what we | :02:48. | :02:52.
have seen today. We have known since January this year that the world's | :02:53. | :02:58.
biggest annual sporting event, seen on TV in 188 different countries, | :02:59. | :03:02.
will be starting in Yorkshire in July 2014. But today in Paris has | :03:03. | :03:09.
been a chance for the Tour De France owners to show the world what | :03:10. | :03:13.
Yorkshire is made of. What is clear is that some of the tour's most | :03:14. | :03:18.
recognisable recent champions need no introduction. The Tour De France | :03:19. | :03:25.
is coming to the UK. Starting in Yorkshire, my mother's home county | :03:26. | :03:29.
and finishes in Harrogate where my family live. I spent time there as a | :03:30. | :03:37.
child. It is a big, big thing. I am really excited. The only thing I can | :03:38. | :03:43.
relate it to, is that it will be similar to the feeling that we had | :03:44. | :03:48.
at the Olympics last year. But is Yorkshire going to be hard enough in | :03:49. | :03:54.
terms of the hills? If you look up around Sheffield, it will be really | :03:55. | :04:00.
tough. I think the real difficulties will happen in the Alps and the | :04:01. | :04:08.
Pyrenees. But the roads around Sheffield will definitely saw the | :04:09. | :04:13.
guys out. And our British champion is not the only ones who have been | :04:14. | :04:18.
doing homework for the official presentation of the official 2014 | :04:19. | :04:22.
Tour De France route. But if there's one for a Yorkshire lad to impress | :04:23. | :04:28.
the French, it is to meet, speak, and greet as they do. HE SPEAKS | :04:29. | :04:56.
FRENCH. He speaks very well. It is hard for him because of his heart | :04:57. | :05:00.
problem a while ago. It is very good for the tour. It will be an | :05:01. | :05:07.
unforgettable Grand Depart. It was not all dignitaries and elite | :05:08. | :05:12.
cyclists today. What a school trip that has been for this community | :05:13. | :05:19.
school in Leeds. It has been an honour. Representing Yorkshire is | :05:20. | :05:25.
amazing. Sebi cyclist in front of me, especially Mark Cavendish and | :05:26. | :05:29.
Chris Froome, I was selling heart attack! For me, Yorkshire, in terms | :05:30. | :05:37.
of cycling, it is a place where people have a passion for it. It is | :05:38. | :05:43.
impressive and I'm sure 100% that it will be huge. Next July in | :05:44. | :05:55.
Yorkshire. Christian Prudhomme talked about all sorts of things in | :05:56. | :06:00.
his speech, including Eric Cantona and Leeds United, but he also spoke | :06:01. | :06:07.
about Yorkshire's intrinsic cycling culture all of which persuaded them | :06:08. | :06:12.
to bring their precious race to Yorkshire next year. Without this | :06:13. | :06:15.
gentleman next to me, none of this would have happened. Christian | :06:16. | :06:19.
Prudhomme said something worrying, user that you had been poorly, with | :06:20. | :06:25.
heart problem? `` he said that you had been poorly. Should we be | :06:26. | :06:31.
worried? No, two weeks ago I had an operation on my heart, but I'm fit | :06:32. | :06:35.
now and I am operating on full power. I have been on half power. I | :06:36. | :06:43.
am in good form, thank you for asking. Really up for the challenge. | :06:44. | :06:47.
How much of a personal sacrifice has it been. It is no hardship for me. | :06:48. | :06:57.
If you are a proud Yorkshireman and you want the county to do well and | :06:58. | :07:00.
you genuinely believe in it doing well, you will do the best that you | :07:01. | :07:05.
can do every day. That is what myself and the team have done. We | :07:06. | :07:10.
are desperate for Yorkshire to do really well. Getting the Tour De | :07:11. | :07:15.
France to Yorkshire was a huge issue before us and the county. It is | :07:16. | :07:19.
starting to sink in. You have seen a grim survey today, thousands of | :07:20. | :07:23.
journalists, TV crews, covering it globally. Tomorrow, the newsprint, | :07:24. | :07:34.
the websites, TV news, majoring on Yorkshire. Will this be the end of | :07:35. | :07:39.
your attempts to bring full`time international racing to Yorkshire? | :07:40. | :07:44.
No, I don't think so. We are ambitious, we want more cycling in | :07:45. | :07:48.
Yorkshire. We want big European sporting events. I am almost out of | :07:49. | :07:56.
breath listening to Gary Verity. We need to watch this space! He is fit, | :07:57. | :08:05.
and he is not done yet. It's not just Paris getting in the | :08:06. | :08:13.
mood for next summer's tour. Welcome back to the Robin Hood Inn in Cragg | :08:14. | :08:17.
Vale and ordered out dashing Calderdale. The community have been | :08:18. | :08:22.
getting ready and preparing. Even though we are talking about July | :08:23. | :08:26.
next year, they have decorated the wall behind me up with the greater | :08:27. | :08:30.
good of every Tour De France for 100 years. All over Yorkshire, things | :08:31. | :08:35.
have been happening. In Middleham in North Yorkshire, the first permanent | :08:36. | :08:38.
sign marking the route was installed today. Around 50 waymarks will be | :08:39. | :08:42.
put up along stage one so cyclists and motorists can follow the route | :08:43. | :08:48.
for years to come. Now it is your chance to see just how close the | :08:49. | :08:54.
world's elite cyclists will come to your towns, villages, cities. Let's | :08:55. | :09:07.
take a look at the route for 2014. Stage one is 118 miles from Leeds to | :09:08. | :09:15.
Harry Gate to the Yorkshire Dales. They will go to Harwood house and | :09:16. | :09:20.
through the estate. Then they will go to Otley and then along the road | :09:21. | :09:26.
to Skipton. Through the wharf Valley and then the climbing begins. | :09:27. | :09:36.
Swaledale provides a fantastic backdrop before the climate to | :09:37. | :09:40.
Leyburn. The sprinters can then regroup as the tour travels to Ripon | :09:41. | :09:44.
on the way to Harrowgate. Experts think it will be eight finish for | :09:45. | :09:58.
the sprinters. Stage two is 124 miles from York to Sheffield with | :09:59. | :10:03.
plenty of tales. Starting in York, the riders had to Knaresborough | :10:04. | :10:07.
before returning to Harrowgate. Then it is over the tops as the tour | :10:08. | :10:12.
makes its second visit to adding. Keighley is the next stop and then | :10:13. | :10:17.
into Bronte country, over the moors to Hebden Bridge. Then Cragg Vale | :10:18. | :10:21.
for that five and a half mile climb. Any reef visited Lancaster. | :10:22. | :10:37.
Then hold first then a steep climb. `` then hold first. It finishes in | :10:38. | :10:44.
spectacular style in Sheffield near the arena. | :10:45. | :10:50.
And if you want to find out if the tour is coming to your street ` | :10:51. | :10:53.
there's full turn`by`turn detail available online. Go to your local | :10:54. | :11:07.
BBC website. The Tour De France has put Cragg Vale on the map. There is | :11:08. | :11:12.
a five and a half mile incline. It is a mecca for cyclists. I will talk | :11:13. | :11:18.
to some of them now. Chris, you are a bit sweaty, what have you been | :11:19. | :11:23.
doing! I have ridden the year from Lancashire tonight. Along the | :11:24. | :11:27.
Valley. How excited are you about next year's Tour De France? Very | :11:28. | :11:34.
excited. Jonathan, you have done the incline, you talked up your name the | :11:35. | :11:42.
board. The fastest on the board! It is a beautiful incline. It goes | :11:43. | :11:45.
through the trees and then comes out onto the trees and then comes out on | :11:46. | :11:50.
to them all and is exposed. `` and it is exposed. We try to do it as | :11:51. | :11:54.
much as we can. How excited are you about next year? I watched the Tour | :11:55. | :12:00.
De France for 30 years and the idea that it is coming passed our front | :12:01. | :12:08.
door, I'm pinching myself! We will have more from the people of Cragg | :12:09. | :12:12.
Vale later on. They have been preparing like mad and taking part | :12:13. | :12:18.
in a world record attempt. For cyclist who like to put | :12:19. | :12:22.
themselves to the test, it seems Cragg Vale in the Calder Valley is | :12:23. | :12:27.
an attraction. It is a classic challenge for cyclists. A lot of | :12:28. | :12:30.
cyclists around Yorkshire come here to ride the climb. It is about five | :12:31. | :12:36.
miles, about 1000 foot climb. The best ones can do it in about 16 | :12:37. | :12:40.
minutes but however long you take, it doesn't matter. It is part of the | :12:41. | :12:46.
root of the Tour De France. It is called imagination. The number of | :12:47. | :12:53.
cyclists who are using this road now, it is incredible. Every | :12:54. | :12:54.
weekend, there are hundreds. Meanwhile, in doors, the children at | :12:55. | :13:21.
the Ark nursery are helping with the world record attempt. They have been | :13:22. | :13:27.
helping members of the community Association Grady bunting that will | :13:28. | :13:32.
line the Cragg Vale climb route. But it has not been without the odd | :13:33. | :13:36.
hitch. We did a trial hanging a couple of weeks ago will be put up | :13:37. | :13:41.
250 metres just to see what happened. Unfortunately, it lasted a | :13:42. | :13:46.
day and a half and someone stole it. Every colour of the rainbow in the | :13:47. | :13:50.
bunting, but great is your favourite? Yes, because a few months | :13:51. | :13:56.
ago, my husband had an accident and he had cut off his trousers and I | :13:57. | :14:00.
grabbed them and wash them and use them in my bunting! A pair of faded | :14:01. | :14:05.
grey trousers which I also grabbed and used. And I had the idea of 50 | :14:06. | :14:12.
shades of grey. And there it is! I notice you are wearing grey | :14:13. | :14:15.
trousers, sir would you like to donate your trousers to the cause? | :14:16. | :14:22.
Outside, our cyclists have reached the end of the climb. Their reward, | :14:23. | :14:27.
a freewheel downhill to the local pub to talk of their times dashed to | :14:28. | :14:32.
chalk up their times on a special board. `` to chalk up their times on | :14:33. | :14:39.
a special board. Later, we will be speaking to the | :14:40. | :14:43.
oldest and the youngest to complete that climb. Now, more on this | :14:44. | :14:51.
bunting story. Elaine and Marianne, you have had a key role in this as | :14:52. | :14:56.
part of the community Association. What brought it on? It was a spur of | :14:57. | :15:03.
the moment thing. We think that where we live is beautiful and we | :15:04. | :15:07.
wanted to do something to celebrate it. Elaine has taken it on, the | :15:08. | :15:11.
association is helping, but Elaine is doing it. Elaine, you are known | :15:12. | :15:17.
as the slowest cyclist in Calderdale! It took you a week to | :15:18. | :15:21.
get to the top? I have not actually made it yet. How long do you think | :15:22. | :15:31.
this bunting needs to be? The world record is several miles, but we | :15:32. | :15:35.
would like to beat that and make it enough to cover the whole of the | :15:36. | :15:42.
route, 5.5 miles. Can they do it? Of course they can! We will be back | :15:43. | :15:46.
later in the programme. Now I will hand you back for the rest of the | :15:47. | :15:51.
day's news. Four people are facing charges in | :15:52. | :15:55.
Greece after the death of a Derbyshire teenager. Matthew Cryer | :15:56. | :15:58.
died on the island of Zante in 2008. The police in Greece originally said | :15:59. | :16:01.
he'd died through excessive drinking but an inquest in the UK heard | :16:02. | :16:05.
evidence that he'd been attacked by club bouncers. After a long campaign | :16:06. | :16:08.
by the family, they're hopeful there could now be a trial. Tom Ingall has | :16:09. | :16:18.
been to meet them today. It's a regular pilgrimage to Matthew | :16:19. | :16:23.
Cryer's grave for his family. His parents have separated but now the | :16:24. | :16:27.
whole family are involved in the campaign for justice. The Sheffield | :16:28. | :16:33.
Wednesday fan should have been 22. But at 17, on his first foreign | :16:34. | :16:39.
holiday alone, he died. At first, the Greek authorities said that it | :16:40. | :16:43.
was related to alcohol. But at a UK inquest, a verdict of unlawful | :16:44. | :16:48.
killing was recorded. Witnesses said that bounces attacked him and he | :16:49. | :16:52.
fell down a flight of stairs. We were hoping for a manslaughter | :16:53. | :17:02.
charge, not a murder charge. It is neither murder nor manslaughter, | :17:03. | :17:05.
they have been charged for exposure, which is similar to our involuntary | :17:06. | :17:13.
manslaughter. It is disgraceful the length of time it has taken, we have | :17:14. | :17:17.
had no help from the Foreign Office. But we have a lawyer now and it | :17:18. | :17:23.
seems to be moving quicker. Matthew's parents and their friends | :17:24. | :17:28.
believe that it is a campaign of direct action which has helped them | :17:29. | :17:32.
secure this breakthrough. It has brought it to people's Ascension and | :17:33. | :17:36.
push it further, especially with the powers that be. It is hoped to `` it | :17:37. | :17:45.
has helped to drive it forward. We will never get closure, but what we | :17:46. | :17:49.
are hoping to get is if we can get to the end of the judicial process, | :17:50. | :17:56.
and get a fair verdict for Matthew, we can move forward with our lives. | :17:57. | :18:01.
There is one further review to take place but five years after | :18:02. | :18:05.
Matthew's death, his family are close to their day in court. | :18:06. | :18:09.
More than 1,200 jobs are to go at Doncaster Council in the next three | :18:10. | :18:12.
years. All elderly day care centres may be closed and services handed | :18:13. | :18:15.
over to private companies. Libraries and leisure centres are also under | :18:16. | :18:19.
threat as the council needs to save over ?100 million by 2017. | :18:20. | :18:24.
1200 jobs have been lost at Doncaster Council in the last three | :18:25. | :18:28.
years and ?100 million of extra cups means that another 1200 will be | :18:29. | :18:36.
walking out of Doncaster's offices by 2017. They are looking at closing | :18:37. | :18:40.
residential centres for elderly people, the totally libraries and | :18:41. | :18:44.
leisure centres as well. The council says it has no choice. But the | :18:45. | :18:48.
unions representing workers say that beat cuts are on fair and | :18:49. | :18:55.
short`sighted. Doncaster will have 50% less spending power in 2017 then | :18:56. | :19:01.
in 2010. That is a massive void and it needs to be filled. You will see | :19:02. | :19:06.
local government far different in 2017 than now. This is the greatest | :19:07. | :19:13.
challenge that I have ever seen. We have got questions over where they | :19:14. | :19:18.
spend money in the past. Is it sensible to spend hundreds of | :19:19. | :19:20.
thousands of pounds on consultants and agencies of always money better | :19:21. | :19:26.
spent elsewhere? The decisions that have been made in the last three | :19:27. | :19:33.
years, where we have already had an introduction in terms of the | :19:34. | :19:36.
difficult situation financially, did they make the decisions early enough | :19:37. | :19:40.
and in the right areas? I don't invade it. Councils in South | :19:41. | :19:45.
Yorkshire are planning for the next four years. They are saying that | :19:46. | :19:49.
they have to redesign what a council is and what they provide for and | :19:50. | :19:52.
whether it will be value for money for taxpayers. | :19:53. | :19:56.
A man has appeared before magistrates in York accused of the | :19:57. | :19:59.
murder of an estate agent and the attempted murder of her colleague. | :20:00. | :20:02.
Police had been called to an apartment in Phoenix Boulevard where | :20:03. | :20:05.
they found 32`year`old Nicole Waterhouse dead. They're still | :20:06. | :20:08.
waiting to speak to Karen Browne who's in hospital with serious | :20:09. | :20:11.
injuries. 25`year`old Jeremy Green was arrested later at his flat in | :20:12. | :20:15.
the city centre. He's been remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown | :20:16. | :20:20.
Court next month. More than 100 protesters gathered | :20:21. | :20:23.
outside Ferrybridge power station in West Yorkshire this morning. They | :20:24. | :20:26.
claim a new multi`fuel power project at the site will employ large | :20:27. | :20:29.
numbers of foreign workers, rather than local people. The contractors | :20:30. | :20:33.
Hitachi Zosen Inova say they are committed to using local labour | :20:34. | :20:38.
where possible. But members of the GMB and Unison unions disagree. | :20:39. | :20:51.
The christening gift offered by David Cameron to Prince George is a | :20:52. | :20:59.
box made in Leeds. It was made by him toys UK Ltd. It features a teddy | :21:00. | :21:04.
and a soldier. It is a family business based in Shadwell. It is | :21:05. | :21:07.
named after the owner's ten`year`old daughter. | :21:08. | :21:09.
Sheffield United have appointed former Derby County boss Nigel | :21:10. | :21:12.
Clough on a two`and`a`half`year deal. He's the son of Brian Clough, | :21:13. | :21:15.
one of the most successful and colourful managers in the history of | :21:16. | :21:22.
English football. Sheffield United have finally got | :21:23. | :21:26.
their man. Nigel Clough has tied up the loose ends and formal club Derby | :21:27. | :21:31.
and is now officially the Blades' new boss. Every time you come here, | :21:32. | :21:37.
there are players and managers who come across as a proper football | :21:38. | :21:41.
club. There is an awful lot of potential here. Nigel Clough played | :21:42. | :21:47.
at the highest level of English football, notably with Liverpool. As | :21:48. | :21:53.
a manager, he has been in charge of just two teams in 15 years. | :21:54. | :21:58.
Remarkable longevity in the modern game. But it is as a manager's son | :21:59. | :22:04.
that he is perhaps best known. Dad Brian Clough was one of the game's | :22:05. | :22:08.
most successful and controversial characters. He was manager of Leeds | :22:09. | :22:15.
United 444 days in 1974. Nigel Clough will become a Sheffield | :22:16. | :22:19.
United's fourth manager in nine and a half years. That is how long it | :22:20. | :22:25.
has been since the Blades were relegated. It is time for some | :22:26. | :22:31.
stability and we have time to build something. Get some young players | :22:32. | :22:35.
through from the academy if they're wrong ones that are good enough | :22:36. | :22:39.
there. Attract some players as well. `` if there are ones that are | :22:40. | :22:47.
good enough. Shepherd United drew nil to nail last night. He has some | :22:48. | :22:59.
job to get the team into the top division. But you would be wise not | :23:00. | :23:01.
to underestimate him. Sheffield United weren't our only | :23:02. | :23:04.
team in action last night. Elsewhere in League One, Rotherham United | :23:05. | :23:08.
could only manage a 1`1 draw at home to Tranmere, Kieran Agard with the | :23:09. | :23:11.
goal for the Millers. Meanwhile Rory McArdle's late header rescued a | :23:12. | :23:14.
point for Bradford at play`off rivals Preston. And in League Two, | :23:15. | :23:19.
York City took a 2`0 lead at Chesterfield but the Spirites came | :23:20. | :23:28.
back to salvage a draw. It has been a mile day but I sense | :23:29. | :23:34.
things up going to get colder? Yes, a chilly night that sets us up | :23:35. | :23:45.
for a nice day tomorrow. We have a ridge of high pressure dominating | :23:46. | :23:52.
our weather tomorrow but not before `` but before then this unsettled | :23:53. | :23:58.
weather on Friday morning. Showers about today, you can make them out | :23:59. | :24:02.
on the satellite picture. They are now easing and the blustery | :24:03. | :24:07.
conditions are also easing. The breeze will feel light overnight. A | :24:08. | :24:12.
fine night with long, clear spells. We are expecting mist and fog to | :24:13. | :24:16.
develop. Amateurs should drop back well into single figures. `` | :24:17. | :24:21.
temperatures should drop back. The sun will rise at these times in the | :24:22. | :24:28.
morning. And these are the high water times. Tomorrow morning, a bit | :24:29. | :24:38.
Apache mist and fog. But it will lift quite readily. `` a bit of | :24:39. | :24:44.
patchy mist. It will feel a bit more pleasant in the sunshine because the | :24:45. | :24:47.
breeze will be lighter. Temperature is about average for the time of | :24:48. | :24:52.
year. Getting up to around 13 or 14 degrees. Later on in the day, we | :24:53. | :25:00.
will see a bit more cloud pushing in from the south. The light breeze | :25:01. | :25:06.
will begin to pay shop again. `` will begin to push up again. Low | :25:07. | :25:11.
pressure moving in from the south. On Friday morning, there will be | :25:12. | :25:15.
heavy rain which will clear to the North. A good deal of Brian bright | :25:16. | :25:22.
weather the course of Friday. An unsettled weekend. `` a good deal of | :25:23. | :25:30.
dry and bright weather. So Paul is in Paris, and we are | :25:31. | :25:37.
stuck here! Let's go back to Nicola in Cragg Vale. | :25:38. | :25:43.
Here we are at the longest incline in the country. 1000 feet, 5.5 | :25:44. | :25:51.
miles. We are joined by a man and his grandson. You have seen the | :25:52. | :25:58.
route now, what does next year's event mean to you? Marvellous. I | :25:59. | :26:02.
have been watching it for a long time. You have been cycling for a | :26:03. | :26:11.
long time as well? On and off! What are the main highlights? The gales. | :26:12. | :26:17.
Some of the climbs up there are pretty great. Tell us about your | :26:18. | :26:22.
journey up the hill, Ellis? How long did it take you? One hour 27 | :26:23. | :26:34.
minutes. That is not bad! Nearly as fast as me! The record is about 15 | :26:35. | :26:40.
minutes, isn't it? How excited are you about next year? Excited. Very | :26:41. | :26:50.
excited. What does it mean to this community? I have been told that | :26:51. | :26:53.
this is the biggest thing to happen to Cragg Vale in more than 100 | :26:54. | :26:57.
years. Well, I have been following it for a long time and I never | :26:58. | :27:00.
thought we would see Ning Lishman win it. It will be great for me. We | :27:01. | :27:08.
will leave you this evening with a spectacular footage of what you can | :27:09. | :27:11.
expect from the 20 14th Grand Depart. `` the 20 14th Grand Depart. | :27:12. | :27:25.
The roads around Sheffield will sort the guys out. It will be a surprise | :27:26. | :27:36.
up there. I am really excited about it. I will start training for it | :27:37. | :27:38.
now. | :27:39. | :27:50. |
