Good evening and welcome to Friday's Look North. | :00:00. | :00:09.
On the programme tonight. Freezing months ahead. Yorkshire charities | :00:10. | :00:12.
warn of a difficult winter for families struggling to pay rising | :00:13. | :00:20.
energy bills. We are going into people's 's home | :00:21. | :00:27.
and they are freezing cold. Also tonight. A hospital is | :00:28. | :00:30.
evacuated after a chemical spill. Patients and staff are forced to | :00:31. | :00:33.
leave Harrogate Hospital after fumes from an acid leak. | :00:34. | :00:38.
And the rugby league World Cup has come to Leeds, the reigning | :00:39. | :00:42.
champions New Zealand taking on Papua New Guinea. | :00:43. | :00:48.
It has been cold and largely cloudy day. And it is going to be chilly | :00:49. | :00:51.
through the weekend. Yorkshire charities have reported a | :00:52. | :01:05.
huge rise in the number of people coming forward with concerns about | :01:06. | :01:09.
paying their energy bills. Four of the big six energy companies | :01:10. | :01:13.
have recently put their prices up by 9% on average, leaving some people | :01:14. | :01:18.
feeling unable to cope. In a moment, we'll hear from the MP | :01:19. | :01:22.
for Bassetlaw, John Mann, but first Cathy Booth reports. | :01:23. | :01:31.
For this man, as for many in Yorkshire, finances are tight. | :01:32. | :01:36.
Crippling energy bills are forcing him to make difficult decisions | :01:37. | :01:43.
about what his family can afford. We cannot do family trips as much as we | :01:44. | :01:50.
used to do. The cost of gas and electricity has been creeping up for | :01:51. | :01:58.
some time. The increases mean a typical domestic dual fuel built now | :01:59. | :02:06.
cost more than ?1400 a year. Until recently, Billy was paying ?40 a | :02:07. | :02:18.
week on a prepaid meter. It is hard to think it could get any worse. | :02:19. | :02:24.
People are struggling now to pay gas and electricity. You go into | :02:25. | :02:29.
people's homes and they are freezing cold and winter is not even here | :02:30. | :02:35.
yet. It is going to get worse. As temperatures continue to drop, the | :02:36. | :02:44.
bills keep going up. Everything is going up. Meanwhile, the energy | :02:45. | :02:57.
companies say the price of raw materials are to blame for rising | :02:58. | :03:02.
bills. For families like Billy's, that is cold comfort. We did ask to | :03:03. | :03:12.
speak to a minister from the Department of Energy and Climate | :03:13. | :03:16.
Change, but were told none was available. | :03:17. | :03:17.
But they did issue the following statement. | :03:18. | :03:29.
We're joined now by the Labour MP for Bassetlaw, John Mann. A number | :03:30. | :03:36.
of charities have told us of their concerns, is this matched by what | :03:37. | :03:39.
you are hearing from your constituents? | :03:40. | :03:42.
It is what I am hearing and it is what I am seeing. People are getting | :03:43. | :03:49.
caught out. It has got cold and they have not realised, they have | :03:50. | :03:53.
forgotten just how Hibees bills are. People are going to payday loan | :03:54. | :03:57.
companies more than before, building up credit card debts. It is a | :03:58. | :04:05.
frightening scenario if we have a cold winter. Surely your government, | :04:06. | :04:13.
when you were in power, has some responsibility. We did not offer | :04:14. | :04:18.
much competition first remark it is not competition we need, it is lower | :04:19. | :04:31.
prices. If I had had my way, I would have nationalised the energy | :04:32. | :04:38.
companies. We are playing for their profits and the huge benefits and | :04:39. | :04:44.
salaries of their top executives. You mentioned that you wanted to try | :04:45. | :04:49.
to bring back then, nationalise the companies, you could not win a vote | :04:50. | :04:53.
on that in Parliament to freeze energy prices for 20 months? We were | :04:54. | :05:02.
happy to vote for it, but the government was not. The government | :05:03. | :05:14.
does not want a freeze. It will not solve the problems, but it will make | :05:15. | :05:19.
a difference in people's pockets. What I am fighting with people now | :05:20. | :05:24.
is they want to know how they will pay the bill this month. They won't | :05:25. | :05:34.
help now. `` they want. I genuinely worry about the plight of some of my | :05:35. | :05:40.
more vulnerable constituents. Thank you. | :05:41. | :05:47.
The brother of a pizza delivery driver who was murdered in Sheffield | :05:48. | :05:51.
last month has said, "Words cannot express our suffering". The family | :05:52. | :05:54.
of Thavisha Peiris have spoken about their heartbreak for the first time | :05:55. | :05:58.
since the stabbing. Two men have been charged in connection with his | :05:59. | :06:01.
murder. Heidi Tomlinson is in Sheffield now. What have the family | :06:02. | :06:11.
said? Thavisha's family have travelled | :06:12. | :06:14.
from their home in string line car does in Sri Lanka. They are | :06:15. | :06:24.
heartbroken over the death of their son. But they feel they want to | :06:25. | :06:30.
express their gratitude to all those who have helped them in these tragic | :06:31. | :06:34.
circumstances. They also want to thank the media and the public | :06:35. | :06:39.
whilst at the same time calling for some privacy. His parents say, we | :06:40. | :06:47.
hope no other family goes through what we are facing now. His brother | :06:48. | :06:55.
said, he was a wonderful person, my friend, words cannot express our | :06:56. | :06:59.
suffering, nothing can bring him back. | :07:00. | :07:02.
What is the latest with the investigation. | :07:03. | :07:08.
Police now that Thavisha was looking forward to a new career as an IT | :07:09. | :07:17.
consultant. Tragically, colleagues find him `` find him here, starved. | :07:18. | :07:28.
Two men aged 17 and 25 have been charged in connection with his | :07:29. | :07:33.
death. Later on Look North. Jail sentences | :07:34. | :07:36.
for antique thieves. Items worth millions of pounds from stately | :07:37. | :07:38.
homes were targeted by the robbers. Part of Harrogate District Hospital | :07:39. | :07:52.
had to be evacuated this morning after a chemical leak. A major | :07:53. | :07:55.
incident was declared and the outpatients department had to be | :07:56. | :07:57.
closed. Although no`one was injured, there | :07:58. | :08:00.
was disruption to many services. Ian White reports. | :08:01. | :08:04.
This was the scene that greeted people arriving for a Haitian | :08:05. | :08:08.
appointments at Harrogate Hospital this morning. Firefighters wearing | :08:09. | :08:12.
specialist chemical suits at the front of the building. Part of the | :08:13. | :08:18.
hospital had to be evacuated when a chemical cold parasitic acid `` | :08:19. | :08:24.
parasitic acid was not to be leaking from a container. Fire crews from | :08:25. | :08:35.
the area were sent to the incident. No one was injured, but the | :08:36. | :08:40.
chemicals at the potential to cause serious harm. This would have caused | :08:41. | :08:48.
respiratory discomfort. We had precautions in place. If those | :08:49. | :08:56.
safety precautions had not taken place, that is a potential we are | :08:57. | :09:02.
looking at. Staff and patients were forced to leave the building when | :09:03. | :09:06.
the fire alarm was activated. We have been able to keep full | :09:07. | :09:11.
emergency services operating and access to radiology. We have had | :09:12. | :09:20.
minor and `` we have had minor implications for our emergency | :09:21. | :09:26.
department. Incidents like today's are well rehearsed. Meanwhile, an | :09:27. | :09:32.
investigation into how the chemical came to leak is continuing. | :09:33. | :09:38.
A North Yorkshire pie maker has created 150 jobs at its new factory. | :09:39. | :09:43.
Yorkshire Baker in Norton has grown from a tiny artisan venture when it | :09:44. | :09:49.
launched in 2008. At the time it employed just a handful of people, | :09:50. | :09:53.
now 200 work here making 20,000 pies every day. Marks Spencer is the | :09:54. | :09:57.
company's major client and now it's been bought by the food giant | :09:58. | :10:04.
Cranswick. More than 15 old fridge freezers | :10:05. | :10:08.
have been flytipped in the Darnall area of Sheffield. The rubbish was | :10:09. | :10:13.
dumped on Sunday night, less than three weeks after the community | :10:14. | :10:17.
spent two days ridding the area of litter and junk. Sheffield City | :10:18. | :10:20.
Council has working with the land owner to try and get the fridges | :10:21. | :10:24.
cleaned up. Last year the council prosecuted 14 people for flytipping. | :10:25. | :10:29.
Three men who handled stolen antiques worth ?5 million from | :10:30. | :10:32.
stately homes in North Yorkshire and Sussex have been jailed for a total | :10:33. | :10:38.
of more than 16 years. It follows a year`long investigation by | :10:39. | :10:39.
Yorkshire's former regional organised crime unit. | :10:40. | :10:42.
Some of the antiques stolen were described as true pieces of British | :10:43. | :10:45.
heritage. Our Crime Correspondent John Cundy has this exclusive report | :10:46. | :10:49.
from one of the halls hit by the conspirators. | :10:50. | :10:53.
At Newby Hall near Ripon, a crime like something out of an Agatha | :10:54. | :11:02.
Christie and `` novel. One summer's night seven years ago, a gang raided | :11:03. | :11:08.
historic Newby Hall. They came on a cross country and they knew what | :11:09. | :11:13.
they were looking for, something priceless inside this room. This | :11:14. | :11:18.
Chippendale table, notional value half ?1 million, was seized in the | :11:19. | :11:29.
midnight rate. It had been crafted by Chippendale personally. The | :11:30. | :11:33.
present owner of Newby Hall thought he would never see the family's | :11:34. | :11:39.
treasured possession again. It is very special. When you look at the | :11:40. | :11:43.
intricate workings on the table, you can see why it is so precious. I was | :11:44. | :11:53.
absolutely horrified. My father was still alive and I told him in the | :11:54. | :11:57.
morning and he was shattered. The gang also struck at Sion Hill and | :11:58. | :12:06.
Firle Place in Sussex. But in September two years ago, the three | :12:07. | :12:10.
conspirators were hunted down. 14 stolen items of fabulous value were | :12:11. | :12:19.
recovered from the home of Darren Webster and Brian Eaton. A third | :12:20. | :12:28.
conspirator, Karel butter, was jailed for six years. `` Carl | :12:29. | :12:40.
Rutter. I am very relieved. It was often tough stick feeling. I love | :12:41. | :12:50.
it. `` it was a fantastic feeling. It was a wonderful feeling when it | :12:51. | :12:55.
came back. To date, the priceless table is back at Newby Hall, | :12:56. | :13:14.
lovingly restored. Before seven o'clock. A decades long | :13:15. | :13:17.
mystery is solved. Old photographs finally reveal the secret of the | :13:18. | :13:23.
missing steam train driver. Now some sports news that's broken | :13:24. | :13:26.
this afternoon. North Yorkshire's Double Paralympic archery champion | :13:27. | :13:29.
Danielle Brown has been ruled out of future international Para`Archery | :13:30. | :13:31.
events, including the Rio Paralympics, following a change in | :13:32. | :13:39.
classification procedures. Brown, who's from Lothersdale, won | :13:40. | :13:42.
two silver medals at this week's Para`Archery World Championships in | :13:43. | :13:44.
Bangkok. The sport's governing body says only athletes with a disability | :13:45. | :13:48.
which impacts on their archery performance should now be allowed to | :13:49. | :13:56.
take part. Her disability mainly affects her lower body. | :13:57. | :14:04.
Meanwhile the Rugby League World Cup comes to Leeds tonight with the | :14:05. | :14:07.
champions, New Zealand, taking on Papua New Guinea. Tanya joins us now | :14:08. | :14:12.
live from Headingley. You can probably hear the | :14:13. | :14:15.
announcements in the studio. It is very loud. But we have a cracking | :14:16. | :14:25.
game in store tonight. With me is England's Richie Myler who would be | :14:26. | :14:34.
plying except for his food. `` playing. Great for the leads public | :14:35. | :14:41.
to see the reigning world champions. Yes, it is exciting. We have not | :14:42. | :14:52.
seen too much of New Zealand. And Williams? Anybody would want him in | :14:53. | :15:01.
their team. Tomorrow, it is England against Fiji, how did you see them | :15:02. | :15:07.
going? It is going to be a tough game. I think they will do the job. | :15:08. | :15:12.
They have been very clinical in some of the games. They need to start | :15:13. | :15:17.
stepping up as we get to the business end of this. Yes, they are | :15:18. | :15:23.
on a good run of form now. They may have to face New Zealand in a | :15:24. | :15:27.
semifinal, and that will be tough. We are going to turn our attention | :15:28. | :15:35.
to Halifax. They are hosting a game on Saturday, Tonga against Italy. | :15:36. | :15:43.
And they also have the FA Cup to look forward to. | :15:44. | :15:57.
Now it is not then as Rome. In fact, this is a school in Halifax. A | :15:58. | :16:01.
school which routinely embraces the rest of the world. They staged their | :16:02. | :16:07.
own version of the rugby league World Cup draw at morning assembly. | :16:08. | :16:16.
England, naturally, was a big crowd pleaser. But for a town boasting so | :16:17. | :16:25.
much rugby league history, it feels so right to be bringing the world 's | :16:26. | :16:32.
best to its doorstep. My grandfather won three Wembley finals for | :16:33. | :16:40.
Halifax. My mum bought this because we are inspired by rugby. I am going | :16:41. | :16:46.
to stand next to them while they sing the national anthem. I like | :16:47. | :17:05.
rugby league and the haka. I've got 600 children performing on the field | :17:06. | :17:09.
before the game. It is going to be sensational. At the moment, I feel | :17:10. | :17:14.
very tired. I'm looking forward to them coming along to the game and we | :17:15. | :17:20.
will get behind them. It is vital for sport to be successful and give | :17:21. | :17:24.
the public something to shout about. You might not always have the best | :17:25. | :17:28.
team, but if the players represent the town, people will respect that. | :17:29. | :17:35.
If Halifax town's footballers continue their resurgence, they | :17:36. | :17:39.
could soon have their own cup tie to pose at the Shay. That ranking as | :17:40. | :17:50.
underdogs will drive them on. The world will be watching Halifax this | :17:51. | :17:54.
weekend. It has been wonderful through this | :17:55. | :18:03.
World Cup. Places have really got behind it? Yes, the crowds have been | :18:04. | :18:09.
unbelievable. Some of the games we have been witnessing as well, the | :18:10. | :18:14.
talent has been outstanding as well. Tonga versus Italy, but is a massive | :18:15. | :18:24.
game. Italy have got to win. Yes, when it first came out, the cross | :18:25. | :18:31.
group games, it was a bit confusing, but we have got a good, | :18:32. | :18:36.
tough contest now. It is going to be exciting. And there will be a big | :18:37. | :18:41.
crowd here tonight. Yes, a big crowd, and it will be very loud. | :18:42. | :18:54.
Everybody in rugby league is buzzing, it is going better than we | :18:55. | :19:00.
even thought. Exactly. Thanks very much. And Richie Myler as part of | :19:01. | :19:08.
the commentary team bringing you this game live. We have the England | :19:09. | :19:15.
game live on BBC One tomorrow. And good news `` And some good news for | :19:16. | :19:23.
the Sheffield Eagles who have confirmed a deal has been done for | :19:24. | :19:27.
them to play at Owlerton stadium once again. You'll remember they | :19:28. | :19:30.
found themselves homeless having played at Don Valley Stadium which | :19:31. | :19:33.
will be demolished later this month. They had faced having to leave the | :19:34. | :19:37.
city, but they'll return to their venue where the club was first | :19:38. | :19:47.
formed nearly 30 years ago. Now here's one for the under`5s! | :19:48. | :19:51.
Festive celebrations have started early in Sheffield as the stars of | :19:52. | :19:54.
children's TV film their Christmas panto at the Crucible. | :19:55. | :19:57.
CBeebies presenters are performing their version of the Dickens classic | :19:58. | :20:00.
A Christmas Carol. Kate Bradbrook's been joining in the fun. | :20:01. | :20:05.
SINGING. It is a classic novel and a festive | :20:06. | :20:19.
favourite. A new version of A Christmas Carol is here at the | :20:20. | :20:23.
Crucible in Sheffield. It has been really good fun to adapt it so that | :20:24. | :20:27.
it is appropriate for young children. Some of the original | :20:28. | :20:31.
elements of the novel would not be quite bright, but I really | :20:32. | :20:36.
encouraged that we have got a fantastic script. This is the one | :20:37. | :20:46.
time of year when all the CBeebies characters come to gather. You will | :20:47. | :20:51.
probably recognise some familiar faces. Some of the actors are here | :20:52. | :21:01.
having their here and make up done. What do you think? I don't need much | :21:02. | :21:09.
make up, I'm so handsome. The story has been stripped back at it is just | :21:10. | :21:15.
the essential parts. The moral about loving your family and caring about | :21:16. | :21:20.
other people, shading, this version of A Christmas Carol really lets | :21:21. | :21:28.
that come through. `` sharing. You can see the show next month on the | :21:29. | :21:36.
CBeebies channel. Mr Maker they are! | :21:37. | :21:46.
Children In Need date next Friday. We are having our own event in | :21:47. | :21:52.
Bradford. Do come along between 530 and 930. And we are live on BBC One | :21:53. | :22:04.
throughout the night. Tell us what amazing things you are doing to | :22:05. | :22:08.
raise funds this year. What are you doing? | :22:09. | :22:15.
Nothing exciting this year. All year, the National Railway | :22:16. | :22:18.
Museum in York has been celebrating the 75th anniversary of Mallard | :22:19. | :22:21.
setting the world record for fastest steam locomotive. | :22:22. | :22:25.
But there's been a mystery at the heart of the famous story. No`one | :22:26. | :22:31.
knew the name of the guard on board that record breaking day. But as | :22:32. | :22:36.
Cathy Killick reports, the mystery's been solved. Here's the story. | :22:37. | :22:44.
It was on Mallard that driver Joe Duddington set up a speed record... | :22:45. | :22:49.
When Mallard steamed into the record books in 1938, she was celebrated | :22:50. | :22:56.
for being the fastest thing on real. 126 mph was a dizzying speed then. A | :22:57. | :23:03.
photograph of her crew taken after the record`breaking run mid front | :23:04. | :23:07.
pages around the world. But while the fireman, driver and Inspector | :23:08. | :23:13.
were named and creditor, `` and credited, the guard never was. His | :23:14. | :23:17.
identity remained a mystery until now. This is his family who sported | :23:18. | :23:25.
a photograph in newspapers. The guard was Harry Croucher. People | :23:26. | :23:32.
have always asked to the guard was, we did not know, and now we do. It | :23:33. | :23:43.
is an iconic story. Today, Harry's daughter was the Museum's honoured | :23:44. | :23:53.
guest. She was ten when he went on the record run. Members of my family | :23:54. | :23:58.
said that he was strapped in at the back because of the speed, I do not | :23:59. | :24:04.
know if that was true. Also, he was paid ten shillings for the journey. | :24:05. | :24:10.
But I am sure he thoroughly enjoyed it. He looks a bit shocked in the | :24:11. | :24:17.
picture. Yes, he does. He is probably still shaking from the | :24:18. | :24:21.
experience. He had been in the real reasons he was 14 and retired when | :24:22. | :24:27.
he was 71. And he was very proud of it. It is applied passed on to his | :24:28. | :24:32.
family, quite obviously delighted to sheer Harry's story `` share. | :24:33. | :24:43.
Lovely. At lunchtime, we were doing a bit of | :24:44. | :24:54.
dancing. Give us some now. How is the weather looking? | :24:55. | :25:00.
Keep your pictures coming in. It is going to be a cold weekend, | :25:01. | :25:35.
particularly Saturday night into Sunday. Tomorrow will start off on a | :25:36. | :25:42.
cold note, six or seven degrees, with a mix of sunny spells and | :25:43. | :25:46.
scattered showers. Most of the shares will be in the West. On | :25:47. | :25:51.
Sunday, a ridge of high pressure developing. And then wet and windy | :25:52. | :25:59.
weather sweeping in from the west, ringing much milder conditions. We | :26:00. | :26:13.
did have quite a lot of cloud today. Just a few showers continuing this | :26:14. | :26:16.
evening. Away from the hills, a largely dry night with decent breaks | :26:17. | :26:20.
in the crowd. Quite chilly conditions. There could just be the | :26:21. | :26:26.
odd icy patch tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning, a chilly start to | :26:27. | :26:43.
the day and we will keep that cold field through the day. A good deal | :26:44. | :26:51.
of dry weather around. Sunny spells breaking through the cloud at times. | :26:52. | :26:56.
The breeze will not feel particularly strong, but it will | :26:57. | :26:59.
feel chilly, temperatures around for or seven degrees. Sunday is a | :27:00. | :27:05.
beautiful day before turning wet and windy on Monday. | :27:06. | :27:12.
We will have the results of the FA Cup match in the late news. And we | :27:13. | :27:18.
will join you on Monday. Good night. | :27:19. | :27:20. |
