the north and west. That's all from the BBC news at six.

:00:00.:00:00.

Good evening, welcome to Monday's Look North.

:00:00.:00:10.

On the programme tonight: a new era for electricity generation in

:00:11.:00:12.

Yorkshire. Plans for a ?2 billion clean power station at Drax,

:00:13.:00:15.

creating 2000 jobs with a revolutionary system to stop carbon

:00:16.:00:21.

dioxide polluting the air. You can see this is a breakthrough

:00:22.:00:24.

technology which would transform the UK's energy system, but also the

:00:25.:00:28.

world's. But will it keep the lights on and

:00:29.:00:33.

the bills down? We investigate. Also tonight: Britain's cheapest

:00:34.:00:37.

supermarket. 500 families in Barnsley can buy top class foods at

:00:38.:00:41.

a third of the price on normal shop shelves.

:00:42.:00:44.

Find out what happened when Russell the crow was given the chance to fly

:00:45.:00:48.

back into the wild after being nursed back to health in

:00:49.:00:52.

Huddersfield. We'll be presenting the BBC

:00:53.:00:55.

Yorkshire Sports Unsung Hero Award to the winner.

:00:56.:01:01.

And many of you saw this sunset in Sheffield yesterday. Join me later

:01:02.:01:02.

for the forecast. First tonight: the new era for

:01:03.:01:20.

electricity generated here in Yorkshire. Plans have been announced

:01:21.:01:25.

today for a new power station at Drax, fired by coal but with

:01:26.:01:28.

advanced technology used to remove the harmful carbon dioxide gas. The

:01:29.:01:32.

plant, which will be built on the same Drax site near Selby, will cost

:01:33.:01:35.

?2 billion. It will provide clean electricity to more than 630,000

:01:36.:01:38.

homes. Carbon dioxide will be captured on site and piped to the

:01:39.:01:42.

North Sea. It could also lead to 2,000 jobs.

:01:43.:01:59.

Drax was once one of Europe's's biggest polluters but it is only

:02:00.:02:03.

mission to go green. Some other methods may surprise you. Rather

:02:04.:02:07.

than abandon coal completely, it is investing its potential future.

:02:08.:02:10.

Today the Government announced that it was backing those plans.

:02:11.:02:15.

We're looking forward to developing this storage demonstration plant at

:02:16.:02:21.

Drax but it is part of a longer`term solution. It is all designed along

:02:22.:02:29.

the Humber Valley. We are creating the curb the network to be able to

:02:30.:02:33.

extract that carbon and deliver it to storage offshore.

:02:34.:02:40.

The brand`new coal `fired power station will be using the latest

:02:41.:02:47.

carbon capture technology. Emissions will be sent underground through a

:02:48.:02:50.

tunnel and to the North Sea. Instead of the CO2 going into the

:02:51.:02:59.

atmosphere, 90% of the gas will be tunnelled out of the East Coast and

:03:00.:03:05.

trapped beneath the sea bed. If we can capture the carbon

:03:06.:03:08.

emissions from coal plants and store them safely, then we are not adding

:03:09.:03:13.

to the climate change problem and it gives called a future.

:03:14.:03:20.

But not everyone is convinced. They are false solutions because we

:03:21.:03:26.

know that this will not deliver the reductions that we need to. We need

:03:27.:03:35.

an investment in energy efficiency. And Drax itself is moving away from

:03:36.:03:40.

coal. It has converted half of its generators to burn renewable fuel.

:03:41.:03:45.

This is what all the fuss is about. This is biomass. It is like sawdust

:03:46.:03:55.

squeezed into pellets. Millions has been spent on the project, which

:03:56.:04:01.

uses leftovers from the forestry industry and is sustainable. But are

:04:02.:04:10.

these advances going to cost more? All of the costs are already

:04:11.:04:16.

factored into people's bills. There are no extra costs here.

:04:17.:04:23.

What is for sure is that once it is complete, this will make Drax the

:04:24.:04:26.

biggest renewable generator in Europe.

:04:27.:04:34.

What implications could this have for Yorkshire's Caulfield?

:04:35.:04:41.

As you heard, if this carbon capture technology storage works, it does

:04:42.:04:48.

mean that Cole has a future. That can only be good news for the

:04:49.:04:56.

coalfields. We now know that a lot of energy is generated by coal. Some

:04:57.:05:03.

of that is coming from as far afield as Colombia and Russia. That is

:05:04.:05:13.

because it is expensive. Today I spoke to UK coal. He has set that he

:05:14.:05:25.

welcomes decarbonisation. The company are worried that we need to

:05:26.:05:32.

stop and think. The pipeline that they are talking about which will

:05:33.:05:37.

take the emissions to the North Sea will be built at the specifications

:05:38.:05:45.

much bigger than they first thought. This means that big polluters could

:05:46.:05:54.

tap into the pipeline and this will help them to get rid of their

:05:55.:06:02.

emissions also. That is good news. I am sure it is not the last we will

:06:03.:06:13.

hear of this. A supermarket that's said to be the

:06:14.:06:16.

cheapest in Britain has opened in South Yorkshire today. It's called

:06:17.:06:19.

'Community Shop' and the first store is in Goldthorpe, near Barnsley.

:06:20.:06:22.

It's aimed at low`income households and the shop will be stocked with

:06:23.:06:25.

cut`price food that other stores have thrown out. Shoppers will have

:06:26.:06:29.

to have membership cards, which are only being issued to 500 poor

:06:30.:06:30.

families. Dawn Robinson lost her job three

:06:31.:06:33.

months ago. She is currently unemployed and the weekly

:06:34.:06:36.

supermarket shop eats into her meagre income. Community Shop's

:06:37.:06:39.

arrival in Goldthorpe is helping her get by at an expensive time of year.

:06:40.:06:44.

When it comes to Christmas and pantomimes and things like that, and

:06:45.:06:47.

the children want to go on trips, that money has to come out of that

:06:48.:06:53.

?70 a week, so it's a tight budget. And the kids have to live on beans

:06:54.:06:57.

on toast for the rest of the week. With these prices, they can still

:06:58.:07:01.

eat fruit and have proper meals every day and go on the pantomime

:07:02.:07:07.

trip too. Community Shop will buy heavily

:07:08.:07:10.

discounted goods that the big retailers normally have to pay to

:07:11.:07:17.

dump. The food is in`date, but might be discontinued or labelled up

:07:18.:07:24.

wrongly. So food that would have ended up rotting in a landfill site

:07:25.:07:27.

is now being bought by Community Shop's 500 new customers at around a

:07:28.:07:37.

third of the original cost. These chocolate is art in`date, but

:07:38.:07:43.

supermarkets do not want to sell them any more. These yoghurts simply

:07:44.:07:45.

have a printing error. Each customer is a member of the

:07:46.:07:58.

shop, allowed to join because they are struggling financially.

:07:59.:08:03.

This is a very proud community, but one that has found life very tough,

:08:04.:08:07.

really since the pit closures. For instance, we have some young mums

:08:08.:08:11.

holding down two jobs. That's really tough, juggling childcare and work

:08:12.:08:14.

and still not breaking above the poverty line. Products will change

:08:15.:08:35.

every week. I would not have imagined they would sell things like

:08:36.:08:40.

this. Community Shop want to open 20

:08:41.:08:42.

stores nationwide, all providing cheap, quality food in deprived

:08:43.:08:57.

towns. That is a brilliant idea. Later on Look North: the allotment

:08:58.:09:00.

holders threatening legal action against the council's planned rent

:09:01.:09:10.

increases. A woman's in hospital with serious

:09:11.:09:14.

dog bite injuries after police were called to a property in Leeds. One

:09:15.:09:17.

dog was captured and another removed from the house in Osmondthorpe. Joe

:09:18.:09:24.

Inwood reports. It was just after 220 this afternoon

:09:25.:09:28.

that police were brought to this property in Leeds. Reports of a

:09:29.:09:33.

woman being attacked by her own dogs. I spoke to the neighbourhood

:09:34.:09:45.

maybe 999: . `` need the 999 call. She is still pretty shaken up. She

:09:46.:09:50.

said the police arrived quickly. Some of the police had guns. They

:09:51.:09:54.

were tackling the dock at the back of the property and one was at the

:09:55.:10:01.

front. I would not have them in my house.

:10:02.:10:10.

They are vicious animals. I am horrified that someone was attacked.

:10:11.:10:17.

The woman is 27 years old and is called Emma. The dog bite injuries

:10:18.:10:27.

are serious. Teachers have been protesting

:10:28.:10:37.

outside this special school. The effectiveness of the school was

:10:38.:10:44.

found to be inadequate and trade unions feel there will be

:10:45.:10:50.

redundancies at the school. I have worked here for several years

:10:51.:10:55.

and it is a fantastic school. The staff are fantastic and it would be

:10:56.:10:56.

a tragedy if it was closed. One of the stations for the new

:10:57.:11:17.

Crossrail project in London is being built at a factory near Worksop.

:11:18.:11:21.

Work is currently under way in the capital, building the new rail

:11:22.:11:24.

transport system at a cost of ?14.8 billion. It'll have 38 stations and

:11:25.:11:27.

link up Heathrow, the West End, City and Docklands. Large sections of one

:11:28.:11:31.

station will be built at Laing O'Rourke's factory in Steetley then

:11:32.:11:34.

transported more than 130 miles to East London and assembled on site.

:11:35.:11:37.

Of the ?14.8 billion that's been spent to build Crossrail, some 97%

:11:38.:11:43.

of it is with UK industries. We're very keen to see other parts of the

:11:44.:11:47.

UK getting the benefit from that work. That will also be very

:11:48.:11:51.

important for us when we come to build HS2.

:11:52.:11:58.

Rail journey times between Sheffield and London have been cut from this

:11:59.:12:02.

morning. The track has been improved so that trains can go faster. It's

:12:03.:12:05.

cost ?70 million. And it will cut seven minutes off the average

:12:06.:12:08.

journey time. The quickest train now takes two hours.

:12:09.:12:15.

A school that lost part of its roof in Doncaster in high winds last week

:12:16.:12:18.

remained closed today. The Head of Hayfield School in Auckley says

:12:19.:12:21.

further assessments were due to take place today to identify the extent

:12:22.:12:25.

of the damage. The school will stay closed for Years seven, eight, nine

:12:26.:12:28.

and ten all week. But it's hoped parts of the site for Years 11, 12

:12:29.:12:32.

and 13 will open from Wednesday. Campaigners against Sea Defences

:12:33.:12:34.

near Scarborough's Spa Complex say they still don't want them after

:12:35.:12:37.

Thursday's tidal surge. Cafes, pubs and shops were flooded in

:12:38.:12:40.

Scarborough and Whitby after gale force winds and a spring tide

:12:41.:12:43.

combined to create huge waves. The Borough Council wants to put rock

:12:44.:12:47.

armour along a stretch of the South Bay to bolster defences. It says the

:12:48.:12:50.

current sea wall there is deteriorating.

:12:51.:13:08.

A group of allotment holders in Leeds have started legal action

:13:09.:13:11.

against the council over planned increases to their rent. The Leeds

:13:12.:13:13.

and District Allotment Gardeners' Federation operates allotments

:13:14.:13:16.

across the city with members also providing produce to local charities

:13:17.:13:19.

for free. The council says it will defend any legal action.

:13:20.:13:22.

Michaela is 74. For the past 14 years, she's been growing her own

:13:23.:13:25.

organic vegetables on this plot in Gledhow, in Leeds. But over the next

:13:26.:13:29.

three years, her rent will almost double.

:13:30.:13:35.

I do feel angry because if the rents go up I might have to think

:13:36.:13:39.

seriously about giving up my piece of the allotment.

:13:40.:13:45.

Right now, allotment owners across Leeds with a full plot will pay

:13:46.:13:53.

?38.50 a year. In 2014 that will rise to ?58 a year. By 2016, that

:13:54.:13:56.

will increase to ?72. The City Council says it needs to

:13:57.:14:07.

put up the rent because of budget cuts imposed by the Government. But

:14:08.:14:10.

the allotment owners are planning to take their fight to the High Court.

:14:11.:14:14.

One of our members said last week: "I'm doing this for pennies. I'm on

:14:15.:14:22.

benefits. I can't afford for the rents to go up." You've also got

:14:23.:14:25.

people who legitimately cannot afford the rise because of other

:14:26.:14:28.

commitments, for instance we have people on this site with young

:14:29.:14:38.

families. Leeds City Council have told us they are disappointed by

:14:39.:14:42.

this action and argued that there is no merit in taking this action and

:14:43.:14:45.

it is likely to cost the public purse. The council says the increase

:14:46.:15:04.

in rents is modest, but lawyers have put in an application for a judicial

:15:05.:15:08.

review in the High Court, though the allotment owners say they would

:15:09.:15:11.

still like to negotiate with the council and try to avoid a legal

:15:12.:15:16.

battle. Still to come: we find out who's won

:15:17.:15:19.

the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

:15:20.:15:29.

Sport now: only our Championship teams were in league action because

:15:30.:15:43.

of second round FA Cup fixtures. We start our round`up at Elland Road,

:15:44.:15:44.

for what was a thrilling match. Leeds may have thought it wasn't

:15:45.:15:54.

their day, finding themselves 2`0 down at half`time against Watford.

:15:55.:15:57.

But Elland Road came to life thanks to goals from Danny Pugh and Matt

:15:58.:16:01.

Smith. Ross McCormack made it 3`2 to Leeds, but Watford equalised in the

:16:02.:16:03.

dying minutes and it finished 3`3. Huddersfield striker James Vaughan

:16:04.:16:16.

should've given his team the lead against Ipswich twice. Danny Wood

:16:17.:16:19.

put the Terriers one`up and Adam Hamill came close to making it two.

:16:20.:16:22.

But Ipswich scored twice to claim all three points.

:16:23.:16:31.

Doncaster Rovers slipped closer to the relegation zone. Bongani Khumalo

:16:32.:16:36.

came close for Donny but Bolton finished up 3`0 winners.

:16:37.:16:41.

A single goal was enough to give Nottingham Forest a win at Sheffield

:16:42.:16:46.

Wednesday. The Owls remain joint`bottom. Caretaker manager

:16:47.:16:49.

Stuart Gray is expected to remain in charge for their next game.

:16:50.:16:55.

Barnsley should still have caretaker boss, Mickey Mellon, in charge at

:16:56.:16:57.

the weekend. Table`toppers Burnley took the lead. The Tykes nearly

:16:58.:17:01.

snatched a point but Tomasz Cywka's free kick was saved. Barnsley prop

:17:02.:17:02.

up the Championship table. Meanwhile in the FA Cup, Sheffield

:17:03.:17:20.

United overcame a potential banana skin at non`league Cambridge United

:17:21.:17:23.

yesterday. An early goal was what they needed and they got it when

:17:24.:17:26.

Jose Baxter turned in Ryan Flynn's cross. The game was settled by a

:17:27.:17:31.

fine solo effort in the second half from Jamie Murphy. He cut inside the

:17:32.:17:37.

Cambridge defence and found the perfect finish to complete a 2`0

:17:38.:17:39.

victory. That meant Sheffield United were our

:17:40.:17:50.

only lower league side in the draw for the third round and they've been

:17:51.:17:53.

rewarded with a trip to Premier League Aston Villa. Our Championship

:17:54.:17:57.

sides are also in there but none have drawn top`flight opposition.

:17:58.:18:03.

Now for a Yorkshireman who's on top of the world. Sheffield's Nick

:18:04.:18:08.

Matthew is once again ranked number one in squash after victory in the

:18:09.:18:11.

Hong Kong Open yesterday. Matthew first topped the world rankings in

:18:12.:18:14.

2010 and has now won 27 career titles.

:18:15.:18:28.

Next Sunday the BBC will host the BBC personality of the year.

:18:29.:18:34.

Now we have a very special presentation to make on tonight's

:18:35.:18:39.

programme to a man who's gone beyond the call of duty to put his sport

:18:40.:18:42.

firmly on the map. Ian Watson from Castleford knew he

:18:43.:18:46.

was in the running for the BBC Yorkshire Sports Unsung Hero Award,

:18:47.:18:49.

but tonight we've got some good news for him: his tireless work at the

:18:50.:18:53.

City of Leeds Synchronised Swimming Club has won him the award.

:18:54.:19:05.

For 28 years, Ian Watson has been helping budding synchronised

:19:06.:19:09.

swimmers in Yorkshire. He taught himself the techniques and created

:19:10.:19:12.

an amateur swimming club at Kippax Pool. He now volunteers six days a

:19:13.:19:17.

week six days a week and is Chair of two clubs in Leeds. He's also

:19:18.:19:20.

developed the city's Synchronised Swimming Club, where the most

:19:21.:19:25.

promising young people can flourish. Ian Watson is a man who is dedicated

:19:26.:19:28.

to what he does. When he was suffering with cancer,

:19:29.:19:32.

he still tried to come to training as much as possible. When he

:19:33.:19:35.

couldn't drive, he got on public transport to make sure that he came

:19:36.:19:39.

to the sessions still. He works tirelessly in volunteering, being

:19:40.:19:41.

part of committees to facilitate synchronised swimming in this area.

:19:42.:19:44.

I really think that without Ian and his vision, synchronised swimming

:19:45.:19:48.

would not be where it is today in the North.

:19:49.:19:50.

Ian has helped hundreds of people to learn the art and even financed

:19:51.:19:54.

equipment at the club at his own expense.

:19:55.:19:57.

I'm not out to produce a champion, I just want to produce the best that

:19:58.:20:01.

the swimmer can be, irrespective of whether it is somebody who doesn't

:20:02.:20:04.

get anywhere but enjoys it or somebody who gets an Olympic gold

:20:05.:20:07.

medal. It doesn't make any difference to me.

:20:08.:20:13.

Those he has helped say he is the best coach ever.

:20:14.:20:16.

He doesn't tell you off if you do something wrong.

:20:17.:20:18.

He's always helping us improve and he's always really friendly to us.

:20:19.:20:20.

He likes to have a laugh! Ian is a man admired and respected

:20:21.:20:34.

by those he works with and a man much loved by his sporting

:20:35.:20:35.

community. We have actually invited Ian into

:20:36.:20:49.

the studio tonight. We would like to give you this very special alert and

:20:50.:21:05.

say congratulations! Now that we have sprung a surprise on you, how

:21:06.:21:09.

does it feel? I am honoured to have received such

:21:10.:21:16.

an award. We saw in the film that you

:21:17.:21:19.

volunteer six days a week and you have paid for equipment and stop

:21:20.:21:28.

what keeps you doing this? Just to see the children develop to

:21:29.:21:31.

the best of their abilities. To see them enjoy the sport and some have

:21:32.:21:38.

Olympic potential. You spent a long time and were

:21:39.:21:42.

critically ill in hospital. To devote all this time to this sport,

:21:43.:21:54.

Friday June want to do that? `` why did you want to do that?

:21:55.:22:06.

It gave me something to do of an evening and it kept me going.

:22:07.:22:15.

What kind of teacher is he? He is really good. He does not just

:22:16.:22:19.

tell you what to do, but he has a sense of humour!

:22:20.:22:30.

What does even's what mean to those who take part in synchronised

:22:31.:22:36.

swimming? I have seen a massive change in my

:22:37.:22:41.

daughter. She used to dance and then Ian spotted her potential at the

:22:42.:22:48.

swimming pool. And now she is a synchronised swimmer. But he always

:22:49.:22:55.

endeavours to develop every child who is there. He gives them

:22:56.:23:03.

confidence and nurtures them. Thank you very much. You had better get a

:23:04.:23:11.

taxi to! `` a tuxedo. When the producer rang me this

:23:12.:23:35.

morning and mentioned that my story involved Russell Crowe, you can

:23:36.:23:38.

imagine how excited I was. But as more details were revealed, it

:23:39.:23:41.

became clear I wasn't going to film the Hollywood A`lister, I was going

:23:42.:23:45.

to film Russell the crow, here in Huddersfield!

:23:46.:23:58.

And this bird's story is nearly as dramatic anything his film star

:23:59.:24:03.

namesake has starred in. He was found badly injured in the road last

:24:04.:24:06.

year. Luckily, those who discovered him were students from an animal

:24:07.:24:10.

care centre. They took him in, named him Russell and he has spent the

:24:11.:24:15.

last 12 months in rehabilitation. He was a little fledgling so he

:24:16.:24:18.

couldn't feed himself, he had broken wing feathers and I knew that if we

:24:19.:24:23.

rescued him, we'd have to keep him a whole year. His flight feathers came

:24:24.:24:26.

back in nicely but he developed cataracts in his eyes, so I couldn't

photographs. A fairly quiet spell of weather is

:25:56.:26:31.

changes. The cloud will reluctantly clear. A little bit of sunshine

might come through. Overnight it will be dry with variable cloud,

:26:46.:26:50.

perhaps even a touch of ground frost. The sun will rise in the

morning at 8:12am. Tomorrow will be a dry day. A south`westerly breeze

should help to break up the cloud. Some mist and fog first thing on

:27:13.:27:38.

Thursday morning. That will clear. There is a risk of rain on Thursday

night into Friday.
