Join us for a special Look North a little later on, when we will listen | :00:20. | :00:26.
to this wonderful choir. That is towards the end of the programme, | :00:27. | :00:31.
but while their June letter the rest of the headlines. Thank you. | :00:32. | :00:34.
Our main story tonight. A political career ends in disgrace. The former | :00:35. | :00:37.
cabinet minister and South Yorkshire MP Denis MacShane is jailed for | :00:38. | :00:44.
making bogus expenses claims. It's a dream come true ` we travel | :00:45. | :00:47.
to Lapland with five`year`old Beatrice. There is widespread | :00:48. | :00:57.
disruption on the nail right works due to the adverse weather. We'll | :00:58. | :01:00.
have the latest situation from York station. The Met office have a | :01:01. | :01:06.
warning in place for gales on Christmas Eve. That Christmas | :01:07. | :01:08.
forecast, up shortly. First tonight, the former Labour | :01:09. | :01:20.
cabinet minister and Rotherham MP Denis MacShane has been jailed for | :01:21. | :01:23.
six months for making bogus expenses claims. He admitted false accounting | :01:24. | :01:28.
by filing 19 fake receipts which amounted to nearly ?13,000. The | :01:29. | :01:35.
judge said the former Europe minister had shown a flagrant breach | :01:36. | :01:39.
of trust in the democratic system. Our political correspondent Len | :01:40. | :01:42.
Tingle has been at the Old Bailey in London and joins us now. Then, over | :01:43. | :01:51.
to you. Good evening. Denis MacShane now joins 15 MPs who have been | :01:52. | :02:00.
jailed since that 2009 MPs expense scandal. The judge, Mr Justice | :02:01. | :02:05.
Sweeney, said he had no alternative to jail him because of the sustained | :02:06. | :02:09.
and repeated dishonesty. There was 90 invoices he sent in into bars and | :02:10. | :02:15.
five and 2008 were supposed to be for research and translation | :02:16. | :02:20.
services from a think tank. In actual account, he owned that think | :02:21. | :02:25.
tank and owned and wrote those invoices themselves. There are those | :02:26. | :02:29.
in the room who saved this follows on from Mr McShane's cavalier | :02:30. | :02:35.
approach to his expenses. This garage tacked onto a semidetached | :02:36. | :02:39.
house in Rotherham was the start of betrayal that led to the downfall of | :02:40. | :02:42.
Denis MacShane. He said this was his constituency office. Look at the | :02:43. | :02:48.
place. He spent ?125,000 on the garage in just a few years. He | :02:49. | :02:53.
claimed for gas even though there is no gas heating. He claimed Fred | :02:54. | :03:06.
television. Marlene Guest also had her suspicions about excessive | :03:07. | :03:10.
claims. It was the laptop. How can anyone get through that many | :03:11. | :03:18.
laptops? Then numerous complaints for years were dismissed. Former | :03:19. | :03:22.
Labour councillor Peter Thirlwell said it was sour grapes because he | :03:23. | :03:26.
wanted a bid of MP himself. Marlene Guest says she is a local raiser of | :03:27. | :03:35.
the far right party. By 2010 their persistent sore Denis MacShane | :03:36. | :03:39.
ordered to repay 4005 and a pounding overpaid amount by the Parliamentary | :03:40. | :03:44.
authority. But the legal inquiry appeared to stall for lack of | :03:45. | :03:47.
evidence. It is not surprising as it was hard to believe he was anything | :03:48. | :03:51.
other than above board. Parachuted into a by`election, he was marked | :03:52. | :03:56.
out for high office. He became a minister in Jack Straw's Foreign | :03:57. | :04:05.
Office. He had fallen out of favour and returned to the backbenches that | :04:06. | :04:08.
continue to travel the world, he says as an unofficial government | :04:09. | :04:14.
adviser. He continued to travel the world. He says an unofficial | :04:15. | :04:18.
government adviser. There were some who wondered how he could afford it | :04:19. | :04:23.
on just a basic MP salary. In November last year, he answered that | :04:24. | :04:30.
question in a Parliamentary report. If our report contains new material | :04:31. | :04:35.
then the police can use it. Denis MacShane admitted he submitted bogus | :04:36. | :04:43.
invoices. That led to a new police inquiry and eventually a court case. | :04:44. | :04:51.
He pleaded guilty to false accounting. He must be now counting | :04:52. | :04:59.
the cost. He has lost his career, his reputation and his future. The | :05:00. | :05:06.
trial judge said sentence had been reduced because of previous good | :05:07. | :05:09.
conduct but he will be imprisoned for Christmas and New Year and must | :05:10. | :05:15.
serve at least three months. Also, Mr McShane had decided he was going | :05:16. | :05:18.
to plead guilty at the very last minute, and for that reason he must | :05:19. | :05:23.
serve at least three months of that six`month sentence. | :05:24. | :05:29.
Tomorrow will mark a year since church organist Alan Greaves was | :05:30. | :05:32.
attacked on his way to midnight mass in Sheffield. He later died in | :05:33. | :05:36.
hospital. Now, Alan's daughter Alison has spoken publicly for the | :05:37. | :05:39.
first time about the loss of her father. The mother of two lives in | :05:40. | :05:43.
Mozambique, where she works as a missionary. Kate Bradbrook has been | :05:44. | :05:46.
finding out how she, Alan's widow Maureen, and his friends plan to | :05:47. | :05:54.
mark the anniversary of his death. A happy family picture, but beneath | :05:55. | :05:57.
the surface Maureen Greaves and her family are still dealing with the | :05:58. | :06:03.
loss of her husband, Alan. Tomorrow maeks exactly a year since he was | :06:04. | :06:07.
randomly attacked on his way to midnight mass. He never regained | :06:08. | :06:15.
consciousness. It has been an incredibly lonely journey, in the | :06:16. | :06:18.
fact that I've been conscious of Alan's absence everyday, and I still | :06:19. | :06:25.
cry for the loss of him. But also it has been a year of meeting some | :06:26. | :06:29.
incredible people and, not only have they been enquiring about how I've | :06:30. | :06:32.
got on with my journey, but they have wanted to express some things | :06:33. | :06:37.
they have been going through. Despite being a close family, | :06:38. | :06:40.
daughter Alison and her two children live in Mozambique, something which | :06:41. | :06:43.
was particularly hard in the weeks and months after Alan's death. There | :06:44. | :06:53.
is not really anybody there who knew my dad, so it was difficult to not | :06:54. | :06:56.
have somebody there who I could remember him with, talk about him | :06:57. | :07:00.
with. It was a very difficult year being so far away from everybody. | :07:01. | :07:05.
This Christmas I think was always going to be very special to me, in | :07:06. | :07:09.
that it was going to be that time of remembering my dad again, and being | :07:10. | :07:13.
with my family and being able to do that freely. So there is definitely | :07:14. | :07:17.
going to be moments of sadness and of reflection. I am going to miss my | :07:18. | :07:21.
dad not being here for sure. But I have two small children and there is | :07:22. | :07:25.
always a celebration involved with kids at Christmas, and there's lots | :07:26. | :07:28.
of things to look forward to as well. | :07:29. | :07:36.
For Alan's friends at this church, it is a time to reflect and | :07:37. | :07:44.
remember. We supported each other in our own grief because we have missed | :07:45. | :07:48.
Alan, not only in the music group, but as a personal friend as well. It | :07:49. | :07:52.
has been really difficult for everybody in the church and in the | :07:53. | :07:55.
community. It has had a ripple effect on the community, but I think | :07:56. | :08:00.
we are all pulling together. We have seen the media interest which has | :08:01. | :08:04.
gone absolutely around the world. His memory will last for ever. | :08:05. | :08:12.
Tomorrow night, a special service called A Celebration of Light will | :08:13. | :08:16.
be held at the spot where Alan was attacked. A fitting tribute for a | :08:17. | :08:29.
man who brightened so many lives. Such a tragic loss. ?? new line | :08:30. | :08:33.
Later on Look North: We'll be live at York station to see what impact | :08:34. | :08:37.
the terrible weather is having on the Christmas getaway. | :08:38. | :08:45.
Other news from around Yorkshire now, and police in Sheffield are | :08:46. | :08:49.
going back to the scene of a murder exactly a week after it happened to | :08:50. | :08:52.
appeal for more information. 36`year`old Simon Holdsworth was | :08:53. | :08:55.
killed as he walked home late on Monday night in the Hackenthorpe | :08:56. | :08:58.
area of the city. Tonight officers will be handing out leaflets, | :08:59. | :09:01.
putting up posters and speaking to members of the public as they | :09:02. | :09:03.
continue their investigation. Mr Holdsworth died from head injuries, | :09:04. | :09:07.
but as yet the police have not found the murder weapon. | :09:08. | :09:10.
Councils in North Yorkshire have collected more than ?12 million this | :09:11. | :09:13.
year in car parking charges and fines. The figures from the motoring | :09:14. | :09:18.
organisation the RAC also show that York has made almost ?5 million from | :09:19. | :09:25.
charges and Leeds over ?6 million. The RAC is calling for more of the | :09:26. | :09:29.
money generated in charges to be spent on improving Yorkshire's | :09:30. | :09:38.
roads. A pensioner from Leeds who was well | :09:39. | :09:41.
known for campaigning on various causes has died. Ivy Needham was | :09:42. | :09:44.
awarded an MBE for leading the fight for the Maxwell pensioners in the | :09:45. | :09:48.
1990s. She was part of a group of pensioners who fought a long running | :09:49. | :09:52.
battle for compensation against the former owner of Mirror Group | :09:53. | :09:54.
newspapers. The 88`year`old died at her nursing home on Thursday. | :09:55. | :09:57.
Bad weather, last minute shopping and the start of the Christmas | :09:58. | :10:01.
getaway ` it's all leading up to serious disruption for commuters | :10:02. | :10:03.
this evening. There are already cancellations on the railways and | :10:04. | :10:09.
severe delays on the roads. Our reporter Phil Bodmer is at York | :10:10. | :10:20.
railway station for us now. Well traditionally this is the busiest | :10:21. | :10:24.
day, then the busiest days of the critters period, with thousands of | :10:25. | :10:27.
people taking to the road. However, those journeys have been somewhat | :10:28. | :10:31.
disrupted because of that act there's weather. Let's get the | :10:32. | :10:34.
latest on how it is affecting East Coast Trains at York station. John, | :10:35. | :10:40.
what is the latest picture? You have had a number of issues. Many people | :10:41. | :10:46.
have taken our advice trouble early. We have lifted all ticket | :10:47. | :10:49.
restriction for the rest of the date and tomorrow, and also made our wide | :10:50. | :10:58.
free that Wi`Fi free. How come the rail network grinds to a halt? I | :10:59. | :11:05.
think everything job is difficult. The roads around North Yorkshire are | :11:06. | :11:08.
difficult, and the flight as well thought we are no difficult anyone | :11:09. | :11:11.
else. We are working hard and doing everything we can to get people back | :11:12. | :11:15.
of the Yorkshire the Christmas time. What Nokia backs on the people who | :11:16. | :11:19.
have not taken that advice? They be out tomorrow. Restrictions in place | :11:20. | :11:26.
or will they remain lifted? They are restricted for tomorrow. They are | :11:27. | :11:31.
advised to listen to your local radio station for the latest | :11:32. | :11:34.
information on trains, and also check our website. Many banks | :11:35. | :11:41.
denied. We will have a final update later on. Other train operators do | :11:42. | :11:47.
have restriction. Trans`Pennine express have disruption affecting | :11:48. | :11:51.
routes between York, Leeds and across the Manchester. If your child | :11:52. | :11:56.
of them, please do check them out. East Midlands Trains have delays | :11:57. | :11:59.
from Sheffield to London because weather. Cross`country services have | :12:00. | :12:03.
been disrupted right across a network, between the lobbies of | :12:04. | :12:07.
England and heading down through Leeds and Chesterfield `` | :12:08. | :12:16.
north`east. Issues on the roads. But as in particular are having problems | :12:17. | :12:20.
because of the sheer volume of traffic and heavy rain. In North | :12:21. | :12:32.
Derbyshire, the A57 is closed. Many shopping centre outlets are closed. | :12:33. | :12:44.
Don't forget to check out your local radio station throughout the night, | :12:45. | :12:51.
and they will be on air tomorrow morning. From York station, back to | :12:52. | :12:55.
you. Coming up before 7pm: The trip of a | :12:56. | :13:00.
lifetime ` as five`year`old Beatrice gets to meet the real Father | :13:01. | :13:11.
Christmas in Lapland. And we'll see Barnsley Youth Choir | :13:12. | :13:14.
sing their hearts out to bring you some Christmas cheer. | :13:15. | :13:23.
Onto the football and possibly the most significant result for our | :13:24. | :13:26.
teams at the weekend was Sheffield Wednesday's defeat. The manner of it | :13:27. | :13:29.
could put pay to Stuarts Gray's chances of getting the manager's job | :13:30. | :13:42.
long term. Here's Tanya. The Sheffield Wednesday fans made | :13:43. | :13:45.
their feelings clear. Then watch their side slumped to defeat to | :13:46. | :13:51.
Bournemouth. When you get beat by home, we knew it we would we do get | :13:52. | :13:56.
at the bottom three. Unfortunately have not done. We have not defended | :13:57. | :14:00.
whelps Tapia conceded to sloppy goals sub at the end of the day, the | :14:01. | :14:09.
chairman has a to make. . This game marked the launch of | :14:10. | :14:11.
anti`discrimination campaign headed by former Leeds striker Robbie | :14:12. | :14:16.
Rogers, who revealed a division he is gay. It is a very personal | :14:17. | :14:22.
thing. Part of me was I need to take time. Part of me was it was a huge | :14:23. | :14:29.
problem and I need to make that statement and do something about it. | :14:30. | :14:40.
It will change. I hope things will change. Match of the Dane was | :14:41. | :14:43.
Rotherham versus Wolverhampton. Rob went up with two goals. Bad news | :14:44. | :14:51.
today is that the play has been recalled by Wigan. Steve Evans was | :14:52. | :14:54.
fear is that the referee gave a penalty for handball. He scored and | :14:55. | :15:06.
went to square the match 3`3. Hats off to the fans of Chesterfield who | :15:07. | :15:09.
went to Exeter and Friday night. Bank of this they got a win. It took | :15:10. | :15:15.
them top and they stayed there after a jaw `` bank God. | :15:16. | :15:26.
Now, Christmas stories don't get much more heart`warming than this. A | :15:27. | :15:32.
five`year`old girl from Whitley near Selby with a genetic muscular | :15:33. | :15:35.
disease has been to Lapland on a dream trip to meet the Real Father | :15:36. | :15:38.
Christmas. Beatrice Howden was selected for the special holiday by | :15:39. | :15:41.
Martin House Children's Hospice. It's part of BBC Radio York's good | :15:42. | :15:45.
night's sleep appeal. We'll hear from Beatrice and her dad in a | :15:46. | :15:48.
moment but first Heidi Tomlinson reports from Lapland in Finland. | :15:49. | :15:57.
I'd like to welcome to welcome you one more time to the special flights | :15:58. | :16:03.
to Santa Claus' home. Leeds Bradford to Lapland, a child's dream | :16:04. | :16:07.
destination. The excitement was palpable, not least for the Howden | :16:08. | :16:13.
family from Whitley, near Selby. We're going to Lapland to see the | :16:14. | :16:24.
real Father Christmas, the real one. What is that green on your eyes? All | :16:25. | :16:30.
elves have green eyes. Five`year`old Beatrice has spinal muscular | :16:31. | :16:33.
atrophy. She was treated to this trip by Leeds Bradford Airport, | :16:34. | :16:36.
which supports Martin House Children's Hospice. A sleigh ride | :16:37. | :16:39.
over a frozen river is a magical way to find Santa's home. Beatrice then | :16:40. | :16:43.
decides she would like to throw snowballs at his elves. You want me | :16:44. | :16:52.
to throw it at an elf? A girl. A girl elf? On your behalf. That was a | :16:53. | :16:59.
good shot. Finally, it is time for Beatrice and her brother Henry to | :17:00. | :17:05.
meet the man himself. You are all covered in snow. What would you like | :17:06. | :17:17.
for Christmas? Oh yes, this is a magical one. A frozen cheese | :17:18. | :17:24.
sandwich. This is a dragon. Did you bring this dragon with you? It is | :17:25. | :17:31.
not a dragon. It is my brother. Is it? I thought it was a dragon. | :17:32. | :17:37.
Captivated by Santa, but the moment had to end, and what better way than | :17:38. | :17:41.
with a kiss goodbye and a message for everyone back home? My elves | :17:42. | :17:45.
know where Yorkshire is and we will be there. A final treat awaits. The | :17:46. | :17:52.
Huskies are raring to go. That is one happy little girl. The real | :17:53. | :17:56.
Santa and the husky ride all in the space of a few hours, and I must | :17:57. | :18:00.
admit it has been a real privilege to be part of it. Beatrice and | :18:01. | :18:11.
Angela are here. Theatres, what was like a meet in Father Christmas? It | :18:12. | :18:17.
was awesome. Was he funny? Did you feel nervous? I can't imagine you | :18:18. | :18:23.
getting nervous. What did you ask for? This was a remarkable trip. It | :18:24. | :18:37.
was assured of a lifetime. But Beatrice Father Christmas, it was | :18:38. | :18:42.
great. If the imagine what it is like to meet Father Christmas, then | :18:43. | :18:46.
it happened exactly as you would imagine it. Everything from Rudolph | :18:47. | :18:51.
to Father Christmas, the elves, the snow. It was picture perfect. What | :18:52. | :19:02.
was the best part? Seeing Father Christmas. You were a bit naughty to | :19:03. | :19:08.
those els. You are throwing snowballs at them. What did they | :19:09. | :19:16.
say? It was fun. Your brother went as well. Andrew, tell us about the | :19:17. | :19:24.
appeal. The appeal is with BBC Radio York, and it is to help raise | :19:25. | :19:30.
?120,000 to help families like ours who use the services. Sorry about | :19:31. | :19:40.
that. One of the things with our family is that there is a high cost | :19:41. | :19:45.
with sleep deprivation, and Martin house health of that and gives us a | :19:46. | :19:51.
good night 's sleep. It just shows the kindness of people listening to | :19:52. | :19:56.
the station. Animals blown away by the kindness of people in Yorkshire. | :19:57. | :20:02.
It is a fantastic county `` I am always blown away. Have you enjoyed | :20:03. | :20:15.
yourself Beatrice? The whole thing takes some beating. It'll take | :20:16. | :20:23.
some. Daddy being told to be quiet. Thank you for coming in. Happy New | :20:24. | :20:28.
Year. Thank you. And you can find out more about the | :20:29. | :20:32.
Good Night's Sleep campaign by going online. Just go to bbc.co.uk forward | :20:33. | :20:39.
slash Radio York. I think we have a star of the future. We went to film | :20:40. | :20:49.
the Christmas special and it was memorable. The memories will stay | :20:50. | :20:52.
with us forever. Beatrice had a fantastic time. We saw the | :20:53. | :21:02.
reindeers. Was brilliant. The plane landed in snow and took off. Can I | :21:03. | :21:04.
show you the pictures. landed in snow and took off. Can I | :21:05. | :21:12.
This is the river use in Yorkshire. That is quite high. I'm sure the | :21:13. | :21:19.
environmental agency will look at the catchments with interest. The | :21:20. | :21:26.
second picture came in today from Sheffield, luck and wet and | :21:27. | :21:33.
uninspired. This is very nice. This is Castle Howard looking | :21:34. | :21:35.
Christmassy. Keep the pictures coming in. We start with a warning. | :21:36. | :21:54.
Widespread gales across Yorkshire. It is a pretty strong winds of 50 to | :21:55. | :22:00.
60 miles an hour. Deep low pressure. The good news is that conditions | :22:01. | :22:04.
will settle down for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but then we have | :22:05. | :22:09.
another dark border coming in Thursday night. There is a swirl of | :22:10. | :22:14.
cloud which brought in the rain. It is clearing but we have a wave on | :22:15. | :22:17.
that weather front which will bring more rain from the south`west | :22:18. | :22:21.
through the course of the night. A bit of a respite over the next few | :22:22. | :22:24.
hours, but a watch from the south`west, the rain purchasing. | :22:25. | :22:30.
That in turn will clear later tonight. The wind will pick up, and | :22:31. | :22:34.
we will see the lowest temperatures down to two Celsius. There is a | :22:35. | :22:39.
chance of icy patches. The sun rises in the morning at 8:30am. It is very | :22:40. | :22:49.
windy tomorrow. There are scattered showers and sunshine on Christmas | :22:50. | :22:53.
Eve. Though showers could be wintry, especially of the hills weather | :22:54. | :22:56.
could be snow by the end of the day. Eastern areas are seeing a lot | :22:57. | :22:59.
of dry and sunny weather. The main feature of the weather tomorrow will | :23:00. | :23:04.
be the widespread south`westerly gales. Tim Butcher is just slightly | :23:05. | :23:08.
below the late December average at six Celsius `` the temperature. On | :23:09. | :23:19.

the Pennines it could be a white Christmas. The gales and heavy rain | :23:27. | :23:30.
