Good evening and welcome to Look North.

:00:00.:00:08.

Tonight: Did doctors fail to spot the signs? Vicky Liggatt died of

:00:09.:00:11.

breast cancer last week, despite seeking help from GPs at least five

:00:12.:00:15.

times. Now her family want answers. Also tonight: We have all the highs

:00:16.:00:18.

and lows of a Sheffield teenager's Olympic medal attempts.

:00:19.:00:30.

And why 30 years after the Miners' Strike, Brassed Off is still pulling

:00:31.:00:37.

in the crowds in Yorkshire. A very disturbed 24 hours to come

:00:38.:00:40.

with the risk of snow showers tonight and heavy rain tomorrow but

:00:41.:00:42.

the main focus is the severe gales. Welcome to the programme. The family

:00:43.:00:57.

of a woman who died last week say she was let down by doctors who

:00:58.:01:00.

failed to spot that her breast cancer had returned. Vicky Liggatt

:01:01.:01:03.

sought help from her local surgery at least five times but her parents

:01:04.:01:07.

say they didn't realise how unwell she was.

:01:08.:01:11.

Last year the same surgery in Staveley near Chesterfield was

:01:12.:01:13.

criticised by the Care Quality Commission after a number of

:01:14.:01:17.

complaints. Now NHS England is investigating Vicky's death. Our

:01:18.:01:20.

Health Correspondent Jamie Coulson reports.

:01:21.:01:29.

Vicky Liggatt died last Wednesday. The breast cancer she thought she

:01:30.:01:33.

had beaten in 2012 had returned, spreading to every part of her body.

:01:34.:01:38.

Her family believes you was let down by doctors who should have spotted

:01:39.:01:42.

it had returned. I had to watch my daughter tell her

:01:43.:01:51.

son that she was dying within two weeks. Then I had got to go and tell

:01:52.:01:58.

my grandson that his mother had died.

:01:59.:02:05.

This video was taken in the days before Becky did. She can be seen

:02:06.:02:10.

talking about the preparations for her funeral.

:02:11.:02:18.

I want to say goodbye and everything.

:02:19.:02:26.

Becky was diagnosed in 2011 but was given the all clear in 2012. ``

:02:27.:02:30.

Vicky. It was only following a routine

:02:31.:02:46.

checkup in January that it became clear the cancer had returned.

:02:47.:02:53.

The GP should have spotted that things were seriously wrong. They

:02:54.:02:59.

can't have checked back on her records.

:03:00.:03:06.

Last year, the GP practice was criticised by the Care Quality

:03:07.:03:08.

Commission about the standards of care.

:03:09.:03:13.

I am very concerned about the care that people in Staveley are

:03:14.:03:19.

receiving and this is the most serious in a number of examples. I

:03:20.:03:27.

want to see services improving in Staveley and the wider NHS community

:03:28.:03:36.

improving. The medical group were Vicky went

:03:37.:03:41.

say they cannot comment at the moment. The hospital that treated

:03:42.:03:47.

her seedy treated her symptoms and referred her back to her GP.

:03:48.:03:56.

Vicky's funeral will take place next week, he funeral her family believe

:03:57.:04:03.

should have been years away. Next tonight: Why are Yorkshire's

:04:04.:04:07.

schools bottom of the league? Teachers and education officials

:04:08.:04:10.

came together for the first ever Yorkshire Education Summit today,

:04:11.:04:13.

after the region emerged as the worst in the country in some Ofsted

:04:14.:04:19.

league tables. Joe Inwood reports. What is education for? That is the

:04:20.:04:24.

question being asked in the conference in Leeds. But it is also

:04:25.:04:28.

being considered in schools like this one in Huddersfield where they

:04:29.:04:34.

need to pass tests is balanced against a more varied approach to

:04:35.:04:38.

learning. As well as the basic skills, children have the

:04:39.:04:44.

opportunity to do her in, wrote their own vegetables and have a

:04:45.:04:49.

sense of purpose within the community.

:04:50.:04:53.

The results of that approach have worked but many of our region's

:04:54.:04:59.

schools have not been performing. In Barnsley, only 22% of schools are

:05:00.:05:09.

rated good `` 22% of children go to schools rated good.

:05:10.:05:17.

The response to that criticism from the region as the first ever

:05:18.:05:21.

Yorkshire Education Summit. Hundreds of leading figures getting together

:05:22.:05:26.

to tackle a problem they do not deny.

:05:27.:05:30.

On a whole series of indicators going back quite a few years, this

:05:31.:05:35.

region does poorly compared with other areas of the country. It is a

:05:36.:05:40.

big challenge but there are tremendous is going on. We have some

:05:41.:05:46.

tremendous teachers and the aim is to use that expertise by moving

:05:47.:05:52.

knowledge around. We want to make the best practice available to as

:05:53.:05:56.

many young people as possible. While there are no easy solutions,

:05:57.:06:02.

they hope today's conference will bring some answers.

:06:03.:06:11.

Later on Look North: Recognising the signs ` the Yorkshire school

:06:12.:06:14.

children getting lessons in how to avoid cyber bullying.

:06:15.:06:20.

Next tonight to the Winter Olympics and for a while this morning it

:06:21.:06:24.

looked as if Yorkshire might be about to get its first medal of the

:06:25.:06:27.

Sochi Games. Our hopes were pinned on teenager Katie Summerhayes from

:06:28.:06:32.

Sheffield. She started well in qualifying for the slopestyle event

:06:33.:06:36.

but, when it came to the final, things began to go downhill to the

:06:37.:06:39.

disappointment of her family watching back home. Olivia Richwald

:06:40.:06:45.

reports. Have the nerves dissipated?

:06:46.:06:51.

Katie Summerhayes is one of Britain's best riders. But at home

:06:52.:06:57.

aunt, uncle and cousins could barely watch. Katie's qualifying heats on

:06:58.:07:04.

the Russian snow went well. She puts it down.

:07:05.:07:09.

The girl from Sheffield was showing the world she was a leading

:07:10.:07:13.

contender. She was through to the finals.

:07:14.:07:19.

Come on! For Great Britain and Yorkshire.

:07:20.:07:22.

Under pressure and in tricky landing conditions, lots of the finalists

:07:23.:07:28.

fell, including Katie. Oh no!

:07:29.:07:34.

Then she had one final run. It had to count.

:07:35.:07:38.

It is all on this last kicker. Nice and simple.

:07:39.:07:44.

It was fabulous but not quite good enough to win a medal.

:07:45.:07:49.

Obviously gutted. I skied really well in qualification which made me

:07:50.:07:53.

feel good but didn't get the end result. It happens, everyone falls

:07:54.:07:59.

and I made two massive mistakes. Just want to give her big hugs now

:08:00.:08:03.

and let her know how well she did. We're so proud of her.

:08:04.:08:08.

She trains is Sheffield. There is no snow so to go out there and compete

:08:09.:08:12.

against people who live on snow it is amazing. She has done us all so

:08:13.:08:18.

proud. Today was disappointing but the girl

:08:19.:08:22.

who learned to ski on dry slopes at the age of six has already tweeted

:08:23.:08:36.

that she is so excited for 2018. Well done, Katie. And we'll have

:08:37.:08:39.

more sport a little later in the programme.

:08:40.:08:53.

Police have charged a man with the death of Andrew Federer. He died

:08:54.:08:58.

after being punched in a club in the early hours of Sunday morning.

:08:59.:09:08.

Traders at Wakefield Market Hall are to be consulted over plans to knock

:09:09.:09:12.

it down. The idea is to replace the market, which only opened in 2008,

:09:13.:09:16.

with a cinema, restaurants and cafes. The plans were expected to be

:09:17.:09:19.

approved this afternoon but instead councillors agreed to an eight`week

:09:20.:09:21.

consultation period. Traders have already told Look North they'll

:09:22.:09:24.

fight against the proposals. A Leeds bus operator is promoting

:09:25.:09:27.

plans for what it claims to be a cheaper alternative to the proposed

:09:28.:09:30.

multimillion pound trolleybus scheme for the city. First Bus says its

:09:31.:09:35.

"new bus for Leeds" project could also be introduced in less time. The

:09:36.:09:39.

council claims the electric bus would cut congestion and improve

:09:40.:09:43.

journey times. A public consultation into the project will begin in

:09:44.:09:47.

April. A footbridge over a main road in

:09:48.:09:50.

Doncaster has been destroyed by a crane on the back of a lorry. The

:09:51.:09:54.

driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the crash at

:09:55.:09:57.

11am this morning. Cleveland Street will remain closed in both

:09:58.:10:00.

directions tonight while the bridge is removed. Diversions are in place

:10:01.:10:03.

and drivers have been warned to expect disruption.

:10:04.:10:18.

Many of us grew up at a time before Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were

:10:19.:10:20.

even heard of. Nowadays social networking sites are

:10:21.:10:23.

part of everyday life but like any parent I am concerned about what to

:10:24.:10:27.

allow and what not to. We hear so much, don't we, about cyber bullying

:10:28.:10:29.

and grooming. Today is Safer Internet Day, created

:10:30.:10:33.

to highlight the issue and to encourage young people to take care

:10:34.:10:36.

when using the internet. Here's what a group of teenagers from Calder

:10:37.:10:39.

High School in Mytholmroyd told us about their internet use.

:10:40.:10:53.

Sometimes I don't really care. But I think I should.

:10:54.:11:05.

I just stay away from people who I don't know.

:11:06.:11:11.

Don't talk to strangers because you might meet some weird people.

:11:12.:11:16.

The fact that it can be manipulated in the way it has been used by a lot

:11:17.:11:22.

of ad people, that worries media play.

:11:23.:11:27.

Sometimes I get a friend request from people I don't know so I

:11:28.:11:35.

decline it but it is freaky how they phoned my profile.

:11:36.:11:43.

I've heard of people being bullied online but I don't get involved

:11:44.:11:47.

because it will get me into trouble. It is an ever present thing and many

:11:48.:11:53.

of my friends have been affected by it.

:11:54.:11:55.

I think it is quite depressing that someone would do that, it shows they

:11:56.:12:01.

are a coward. They let me on whenever because they

:12:02.:12:07.

know I want do stuff they don't want me to do.

:12:08.:12:11.

They know I'm not the sort of person who would go on dodgy things.

:12:12.:12:22.

Tink Palmer from North Yorkshire is one of the country's leading experts

:12:23.:12:27.

on internet safety. So does she think most teenagers are as clued`up

:12:28.:12:33.

as the youngsters we spoke to? I think they are increasingly more

:12:34.:12:38.

aware and they are pretty clued up about knowing about it but when it

:12:39.:12:43.

actually comes to being online and caught up in that situation it is

:12:44.:12:49.

different things. You might know and understand about it but it is still

:12:50.:12:53.

very easy to get caught up with people who are really intent on

:12:54.:13:00.

targeting young people. How safe are we online?

:13:01.:13:05.

What a question! I would say we are as safe as our

:13:06.:13:11.

knowledge is about how to keep safe. It is not just one person's

:13:12.:13:17.

responsibility. The people around young people have responsibility.

:13:18.:13:25.

What is safe Internet use? Talking to your children or your

:13:26.:13:30.

grandchildren about what they have been doing online since the minute

:13:31.:13:35.

they have started. Just as when my children were younger and went to

:13:36.:13:41.

the cinema or the theatre I would ask them how it was. You start the

:13:42.:13:46.

dialogue as soon as possible. How common is it for it to spiral

:13:47.:13:56.

from seemingly harmless sites like Facebook and Twitter?

:13:57.:14:02.

That is where they will meet them but then they encourage them to go

:14:03.:14:10.

to more private sites. The try and get them away from other influences.

:14:11.:14:16.

Children who are sexually harmed off`line think it very difficult to

:14:17.:14:23.

talk about it but online doubly so because if the tell someone about

:14:24.:14:26.

the images they may have sent then someone may finds the images and

:14:27.:14:37.

then see what has been going on. I would advise young people always to

:14:38.:14:45.

tell someone if they are approached.

:14:46.:14:49.

If you're a young person, parent or carer who wants to learn more about

:14:50.:14:52.

staying safe online there's lots of advice on the Safer Internet Day

:14:53.:14:55.

website. Before 7pm: Is it all in a name?

:14:56.:14:59.

Will Yorkshire Carnegie encourage more investment for rugby union?

:15:00.:15:02.

And we ask if the boom in recreational cycling is leading to

:15:03.:15:05.

more accidents on Yorkshire's rural roads?

:15:06.:15:16.

Let's have a bit of sport for a change.

:15:17.:15:22.

First tonight, the continuing Leeds United takeover saga. Leeds play at

:15:23.:15:26.

Brighton tonight but there will be as much attention on what's

:15:27.:15:28.

happening in the directors' box as there will be on events on the

:15:29.:15:32.

pitch. Prospective new owner Massimo Cellino may turn up to watch the

:15:33.:15:35.

team he wants to take over. Our reporter Ian Bucknell joins us now

:15:36.:15:39.

from the Amex stadium. Ian, have there been any sightings?

:15:40.:15:52.

Not yet, no. It is a chilly night here. We are expecting a crowd of

:15:53.:16:03.

around 25,000, around 2000 them from Leeds. They have sold their entire

:16:04.:16:11.

allocation which is good going for a cold night. We have had differing

:16:12.:16:20.

reports as to whether he will be here tonight.

:16:21.:16:25.

Why the interest in this particular match?

:16:26.:16:32.

He is over in England at the moment for a very important hearing. He has

:16:33.:16:38.

to pass the fit and proper person 's test in order to be able to take

:16:39.:16:43.

over at Leeds United. It is very much in the balance as he has a

:16:44.:16:49.

previous conviction for fraud, although that is ten years ago so

:16:50.:16:56.

might be seen as spent. He also has an overhanging allegation of

:16:57.:16:59.

embezzlement. Away from events in the directors'

:17:00.:17:06.

box, what about the match itself? It is easy to forget at times that

:17:07.:17:12.

Leeds United are a football club. Despite all their problems, they are

:17:13.:17:16.

not that far of the play of lasers. There is a lot to play for. Good

:17:17.:17:26.

luck trying to spot him. Leeds Carnegie will become Yorkshire

:17:27.:17:29.

Carnegie next season in a bid to bring in new investment and

:17:30.:17:31.

ultimately create a sustainable top flight rugby union side in the

:17:32.:17:35.

county. They're adamant this isn't just a re`branding exercise but a

:17:36.:17:38.

whole re`modelling of the sport here for the future.

:17:39.:17:49.

From one Yorkshireman to another. The score for England. Both came

:17:50.:17:59.

through the system but ply their trade elsewhere.

:18:00.:18:07.

What has been missing is having someone at the top, that proven

:18:08.:18:18.

side. If we get it right, and it has to be Yorkshire`wide, it will

:18:19.:18:30.

benefit the whole of Yorkshire. They will continue to play here but

:18:31.:18:34.

this isn't just eerie branding exercise, it is a remodelling of

:18:35.:18:42.

rugby union here in Yorkshire. But they need investment.

:18:43.:18:50.

This does give us the opportunity to create a sustainable and successful

:18:51.:18:54.

premiership club. We will have to wait and see if the county grasps

:18:55.:18:59.

it. Discussions have taken place with

:19:00.:19:05.

other clubs in the area and some have told us they are behind the

:19:06.:19:06.

idea. But not all fans agree. The hope is that one day local

:19:07.:19:31.

players will play in the county. But they will have to convince fans and

:19:32.:19:34.

sponsors that this is the way forward.

:19:35.:19:38.

It will be really interesting to see if that takes off because many

:19:39.:19:45.

Premiership clubs have players from their area.

:19:46.:19:54.

Lots of clubs are jumping on the bandwagon.

:19:55.:20:04.

Yorkshire as a name in young break `` Rugby union have a name and they

:20:05.:20:09.

want to build on that. We reported yesterday about safety

:20:10.:20:17.

concerns on Yorkshire's roads. We have had a big reaction to our piece

:20:18.:20:21.

last night on our big towns and cities. Are they putting people off

:20:22.:20:24.

riding to work or school? But cycling for fitness or fun in our

:20:25.:20:28.

rural areas is booming. Our Tour de France correspondent Matt Slater has

:20:29.:20:32.

been out on his bike in the Pennine town of Holmfirth to ask if

:20:33.:20:35.

Yorkshire's back roads are any safer.

:20:36.:20:37.

It is 9:30 on Sunday and it is wet but not wet enough to put off

:20:38.:20:41.

Holmfirth's new cycling club. The town serves as base camp for the

:20:42.:20:45.

climb up Holme Moss so these are the roads Tour de France fans will flock

:20:46.:20:49.

to this summer. Roads that many fans want to ride for themselves and

:20:50.:20:51.

could be much safer. You do see it regularly. Even on

:20:52.:20:56.

quiet roads even on a Sunday morning you will see someone in a car with

:20:57.:21:00.

the blinkers on, not looking at bikes and cyclists. All they want to

:21:01.:21:05.

do is get from A to B as quickly as they can. They see cyclists as a

:21:06.:21:09.

hindrance. There has been a big focus on the

:21:10.:21:12.

economic benefit of Yorkshire hosting the Tour but if there is to

:21:13.:21:16.

be a health or transport legacy as well, cycling clubs like this one

:21:17.:21:20.

have a huge role to play in cycling that is fun, friendly and safe. On

:21:21.:21:24.

Sunday it wasn't just the hot drinks that were steaming. While Jim Brown

:21:25.:21:29.

and his dad defrosted, I asked them if they ever felt scared riding in

:21:30.:21:32.

Yorkshire's lanes. Sometimes. When you are in a group

:21:33.:21:36.

it doesn't affect you but more when you are on your own at rush hour.

:21:37.:21:42.

Normally it is fine. We tend to ride at the weekends on

:21:43.:21:46.

quiet roads as much as we can but even on those roads, on narrow roads

:21:47.:21:50.

there are issues as cars try to pass and are impatient. We all need to

:21:51.:22:01.

respect each other. The youthful antics of men old

:22:02.:22:04.

enough to know better. It sounds like the pitch for Last Of The

:22:05.:22:08.

Summer Wine but cycling could be a home`spun hit.

:22:09.:22:22.

We are going to be going up that nice little hill on a tandem.

:22:23.:22:30.

Lots of people contacted us saying we want a much more positive

:22:31.:22:35.

attitude about cycling. We will see if we can try to do that.

:22:36.:22:39.

Can you believe it's nearly 18 years since the film Brassed Off was made

:22:40.:22:42.

right here in Yorkshire? It's never lost its popularity and has been

:22:43.:22:46.

adapted for the stage and performed all over the country.

:22:47.:22:49.

I remember one of the great lines from the film. What do you do? I am

:22:50.:22:53.

a miner. A miner? Yes, dodo, dinosaur, miner, remember them?

:22:54.:22:59.

Lost your calling. It explores the decline of the

:23:00.:23:02.

mining industry in Yorkshire and, 30 years after the miners' strike, York

:23:03.:23:05.

Theatre Royal is putting it on stage.

:23:06.:23:13.

It is just a few days till opening night so rehearsals are intense.

:23:14.:23:19.

Brassed Off resonates with audiences round here. It shone a light on a

:23:20.:23:25.

community riven by the miners strike and then destroyed when the pits

:23:26.:23:29.

closed. She is also named after a pit

:23:30.:23:54.

village and appreciates the play's portrayal of mining life. It gets

:23:55.:23:57.

right to the heart of communities. It has got real political and social

:23:58.:24:04.

integrity about it and a beautiful heart and comedy to it. These are

:24:05.:24:08.

real funny Yorkshire people. For the lead actor, the show is a revival.

:24:09.:24:17.

He last played his part here ten years ago. It doesn't seem like ten

:24:18.:24:22.

years but I forgot about what an enjoyable piece it was to do.

:24:23.:24:28.

The whole piece, what it represents and of course the brass band music

:24:29.:24:32.

is fantastic. After opening in York on Friday, the

:24:33.:24:39.

short goes on tour. You can also catch it in Bradford and Sheffield.

:24:40.:24:45.

That looks great. We are going cycling tomorrow. We

:24:46.:24:53.

are starting off where there might be snow!

:24:54.:25:00.

Can I have a picture? I'd like to see the state of your here.

:25:01.:25:26.

There has been some lively showers around this evening. Reports of

:25:27.:25:32.

thunderstorms as well. Keep those pictures coming in. The main morning
