Thank you. Good evening. It's 70 years this weekend since an American | :00:11. | :00:16.
fighter aircraft crashed in a park in Sheffield during the Second World | :00:17. | :00:19.
War. The B17 bomber, nicknamed Mi Amigo, was on its way back to | :00:20. | :00:23.
Britain from bombing Nazi targets in Denmark when it crashed in woodland | :00:24. | :00:26.
in Endcliffe Park. Today people in Sheffield have been remembering the | :00:27. | :00:29.
ten aircrew who were killed. Here's Mark Ansell. | :00:30. | :00:34.
American B`17 bomber crews based in Britain during the Second World War | :00:35. | :00:38.
had to fly 25 missions before being allowed home. But many were killed | :00:39. | :00:43.
in action. Among them were the ten man crew of Mi Amigo. This plane was | :00:44. | :00:51.
coming back from a bombing raid in Denmark and as it limped over the | :00:52. | :00:55.
house is behind me, the pilot lost control and ended up crashing in the | :00:56. | :01:00.
trees over their in Sheffield. The plane narrowly missed the children | :01:01. | :01:06.
playing in Endcliffe Park, and there are some people that have vivid | :01:07. | :01:11.
memories of that day. It was mangled metal and explosions going off with | :01:12. | :01:17.
what munitions were left on it. It came over here and suddenly it went | :01:18. | :01:23.
into a spin and into these trees just at the back, and it burst into | :01:24. | :01:28.
flames. I remember my mother picking me up in her arms and running | :01:29. | :01:33.
outside with me towards the park railings and seeing people running | :01:34. | :01:37.
madly across the grass towards the area to see if they could help. | :01:38. | :01:41.
Unfortunately, they couldn't, because the poor men had perished. | :01:42. | :01:46.
Today, in Sheffield, they have been remembering the young men who died | :01:47. | :01:50.
in the crash. It is a significant day for the American service men | :01:51. | :01:57.
from Harrogate. We have come here to remember ten Americans. Their fellow | :01:58. | :02:02.
generations are wondering does anybody care about them? We do. You | :02:03. | :02:05.
do. And we appreciate that very much. For the Americans and the | :02:06. | :02:10.
people of Sheffield alike, it is important to pay tributes to former | :02:11. | :02:16.
comrades that died for our freedom 70 years ago. | :02:17. | :02:20.
The search is continuing for a prisoner, jailed for the murder of a | :02:21. | :02:23.
West Yorkshire pensioner, who absconded while on day release from | :02:24. | :02:26.
jail. Paul Maxwell escaped while he was on a visit to Rochdale town | :02:27. | :02:30.
centre. He's serving life for the murder of 85`year`old Joe Smailes, | :02:31. | :02:33.
seen here on the left, in Wakefield in 1996. He was robbed and severely | :02:34. | :02:37.
beaten in his home leaving him with a broken neck. | :02:38. | :02:41.
Next tonight, earlier this week we brought you the story of a group of | :02:42. | :02:45.
people starting on a new project to build a brand new steam engine. The | :02:46. | :02:48.
mighty P2 first rolled out of the Plant Works in Doncaster eight | :02:49. | :02:52.
decades ago. It was one of the largest locomotives they ever built | :02:53. | :02:55.
there. To build the very first part for the new one, television | :02:56. | :02:58.
personality James May offered his services. We were invited along. | :02:59. | :03:05.
You will often see him behind the wheel, but maybe not the wheel of a | :03:06. | :03:12.
locomotive. James May is a self`confessed engineering | :03:13. | :03:15.
enthusiast, the ideal choice to join forces with a group of people that | :03:16. | :03:21.
wants to build a brand`new steam engine. Nothing to worry about | :03:22. | :03:25.
there. Disengage. Here we go. The aim is to recreate a class P2, six | :03:26. | :03:32.
were built with the first running out of the plant were at 80 years | :03:33. | :03:37.
ago. The new one will be called the Prince of Wales. I like this stuff. | :03:38. | :03:42.
I am not into pretending that I do things, I just do things that I | :03:43. | :03:47.
like, I like metalwork, machinery, I like the smells, all of that. I like | :03:48. | :03:52.
it. Some people think it is all very anal, but it is no different from | :03:53. | :03:57.
liking cooking or whatever. Two years ago, a few people build | :03:58. | :04:02.
tornado which has gone on to become a star train on the line. James has | :04:03. | :04:07.
been here from the start, and he is building the very first component. | :04:08. | :04:13.
It becomes tangible, the project has begun to take shape. Until now, it | :04:14. | :04:18.
has been fundraising, but now we're starting construction. 12 hours | :04:19. | :04:24.
later, it was finished. The rest of the locomotive should be done in | :04:25. | :04:28.
another seven years. All of that lovely turning and none of us will | :04:29. | :04:35.
ever see it. But when it comes towards you, you will know that you | :04:36. | :04:40.
made it. Yes, I would be quite boring about it! If I am with anyone | :04:41. | :04:44.
and it is coming towards us, or if it appears in the newspaper, I would | :04:45. | :04:50.
be like, I have done that! The Sheffield boxer and former | :04:51. | :04:52.
Sheffield United footballer Curtis Woodhouse is to retire after winning | :04:53. | :04:55.
the British light`welterweight title. | :04:56. | :04:57.
The 33`year`old went into his bout as an underdog against defending | :04:58. | :05:00.
champion Darren Hamilton. But in a close contest he grew in belief as | :05:01. | :05:03.
his jab caused Hamilton problems. He improved his record to 22 wins from | :05:04. | :05:06.
28 fights. Onto rugby league and two results | :05:07. | :05:08.
this afternoon. Huddersfield Giants 24, Hull KR 24. Castleford Tigers | :05:09. | :05:13.
32, Catalan Dragons six. Now, the weather. | :05:14. | :05:18.
Good evening, it is been a windy day for many of us and this evening, the | :05:19. | :05:25.
wind continues to be strong from the south`west. This rain which has been | :05:26. | :05:29.
edging into parts of the Dales will retreat for a part tonight, so | :05:30. | :05:33.
mainly cloudy for many of us and mild with temperatures falling to | :05:34. | :05:39.
seven or eight Celsius. For Monday, staying windy, that rain will start | :05:40. | :05:43.
to edge to the east and it would break up to leave a fairly dry, | :05:44. | :05:49.
sunny afternoon with temperatures of around nine or 10 degrees. Then, as | :05:50. | :05:53.
we go through to Tuesday, it turns wet and clearing into sunshine and | :05:54. | :05:58.
showers with highs of nine Celsius. The late bulletin is at 10:15pm, | :05:59. | :06:00.
from the tea`time team, good died. Hello. Still no sign of the weather | :06:01. | :06:10.
really settling down next week. There should be an improvement for | :06:11. | :06:14.
most of us tomorrow. It will not be as windy as it has been today, and | :06:15. | :06:17.
the band of rain will slowly peter out. We still have some rain to come | :06:18. | :06:21.
through the night. This band of rain is quite slow moving, it will wander | :06:22. | :06:25.
northwards into Dumfries and Galloway. Close to Northern Ireland, | :06:26. | :06:28.
heavy rain in Cumbria and later in the night it will turn whether in | :06:29. | :06:31.
Wales and the south-west. Southerly wind, quite strong at the moment, | :06:32. | :06:35.
that will ease as the night goes on but it should be pretty mild, six or | :06:36. | :06:39.
seven degrees, typically. Tomorrow, we start with heavy rain, especially | :06:40. | :06:43.
over the hills, as it slips slowly eastwards so the rain tends to | :06:44. | :06:47.
become light and patchy. Buying it, we get some sunshine and maybe a few | :06:48. | :06:53.
showers. A good day in Scotland especially northern Scotland. In | :06:54. | :06:57.
Northern Ireland we will see the showers increasing later in the | :06:58. | :07:01.
afternoon. By three o'clock, that is left of the band of cloud and rain, | :07:02. | :07:10.
not lifting at all. Sunny spells in the West Midlands and Wales. A few | :07:11. | :07:14.
showers, possibly. Temperatures double figures. Very quickly in the | :07:15. | :07:16.
evening it will | :07:17. | :07:17. |
