Good evening and welcome to the late Look North.

:00:09.:00:10.

Tonight - Hundreds of former coking plant workers

:00:11.:00:12.

and their relatives sue British Steel, claiming they were

:00:13.:00:15.

Returning to the era of new council houses.

:00:16.:00:17.

The first in 30 years are built in Sheffield,

:00:18.:00:19.

The weather is set to get colder over the next few days. I will be

:00:20.:00:30.

back later with the details. A High Court action is to be taken

:00:31.:00:37.

by lawyers on behalf of hundreds of former steel workers

:00:38.:00:42.

including more than It's claimed their job exposed them

:00:43.:00:44.

to toxic substances in British Steel coking plants dating back

:00:45.:00:48.

to the Second World War. For years, Terry worked in the

:00:49.:00:54.

coking works. His family are adamant it was

:00:55.:01:09.

the exposure to dust and fumes which were responsible

:01:10.:01:12.

for Terry's death years later. You plan everything and then it

:01:13.:01:15.

stops dead instantly. These conditions they were exposed

:01:16.:01:27.

to four decades until more Lawyer David Johnson

:01:28.:01:30.

who is representing his widow and 325

:01:31.:01:39.

other coke workers. I've met a number of individuals

:01:40.:01:41.

that have passed away. One individual I met

:01:42.:01:51.

three days before These individuals go to work,

:01:52.:01:53.

they expect to be healthy. They go there to earn money and

:01:54.:02:03.

these individuals have conditions There is a lot of

:02:04.:02:08.

people out there and they need to know that

:02:09.:02:16.

they can put a claim in. You can get justice if you have

:02:17.:02:20.

lost your husband and they are ill and have not been able

:02:21.:02:22.

to work for how many years. Lives change through

:02:23.:02:36.

a job like that. He was on good money but look

:02:37.:02:42.

what happened at the British Steel told us

:02:43.:02:45.

they are aware of the claims made against them but say while legal

:02:46.:02:49.

action continues, they cannot This is a group action -

:02:50.:02:51.

how significant is that? It is the first step in the court

:02:52.:03:04.

process but an important one. It is a group litigation order which can

:03:05.:03:07.

be approved. Those steelworkers feel they have a case on behalf of heard

:03:08.:03:12.

as a group rather than individuals. In the long term it will be cheaper

:03:13.:03:15.

but will avoid the claimants having to go through the same process on

:03:16.:03:21.

their own. There are currently 325 people in that group but the

:03:22.:03:26.

register is not yet closed. Lawyers suspect there are hundreds more

:03:27.:03:28.

steelworkers out there who could still be added to that register. Is

:03:29.:03:33.

there any indication on how strong the case will be? Lung cancer was a

:03:34.:03:44.

serious disease back in 2012. They admitted that Coke fumes do cause

:03:45.:03:52.

lung cancer. They dispute whether they got lung cancer from working on

:03:53.:03:57.

these plants and got enough exposure to cause these diseases. The case

:03:58.:04:01.

could take two to three years to reach a conclusion and that it is

:04:02.:04:05.

time that some of these claimants may not have. Thank you.

:04:06.:04:09.

A Scarborough man has avoided jail after being convicted

:04:10.:04:12.

of using a speed camera jamming device on his car.

:04:13.:04:15.

Ben Kitto, seen here in the grey suit,

:04:16.:04:16.

had the laser blocker fitted beneath his number plate

:04:17.:04:18.

so he could travel at up to 90 miles per hour

:04:19.:04:21.

The devices which are sold legally as parking sensors,

:04:22.:04:25.

prevent police from taking an accurate reading.

:04:26.:04:29.

Campaigners feel the suspended jail sentence given

:04:30.:04:31.

The legal system is getting far too fond of giving out lenient sentences

:04:32.:04:44.

which mean families are being let down on criminals are let off the

:04:45.:04:48.

hook and this isn't acceptable. Norma members of the public do not

:04:49.:04:54.

have this device. -- normal. You must be aware of using it on the

:04:55.:05:00.

road and you may have to face higher penalties than a speeding matter.

:05:01.:05:03.

Sheffield City Council is to put up council tax

:05:04.:05:05.

by nearly 5%, an increase which includes a 3%

:05:06.:05:07.

rise specifically to pay for social care.

:05:08.:05:09.

This equates to an extra 87 pence per week

:05:10.:05:11.

The council said around 225 jobs will be lost

:05:12.:05:14.

as it tries to find extra savings of ?40 million next year.

:05:15.:05:19.

A man who used his car as a weapon to run down a petrol station

:05:20.:05:24.

attendant as he attempted to drive away with ?120

:05:25.:05:28.

worth of diesel has been jailed for 17 months.

:05:29.:05:31.

30-year-old Scott Dearing drove into Michelle Carr

:05:32.:05:34.

Miss Carr suffered bumps and bruises,

:05:35.:05:39.

Dearing was jailed having previously pleaded guilty to eight offences,

:05:40.:05:44.

Protestors in Sheffield were out for a second day to try and prevent

:05:45.:05:58.

contractors from felling two trees in Nether Edge.

:05:59.:06:02.

But this afternoon were unable to prevent a third from being

:06:03.:06:04.

chopped down after protestors were threatened with arrest.

:06:05.:06:06.

The first new council houses for 30 years have been built in Sheffield,

:06:07.:06:10.

and they'll provide a thousand homes in the city.

:06:11.:06:14.

Back in 1980 almost a third of people in England

:06:15.:06:21.

lived in a council house but today that figure

:06:22.:06:24.

In Sheffield the number of council houses has halved.

:06:25.:06:35.

now the local authority owns 40,000 homes.

:06:36.:06:48.

The 1950s and 60s saw hundreds of thousands of

:06:49.:06:57.

Families were introduced to brand-new housing

:06:58.:07:03.

estates with gardens and indoor toilets.

:07:04.:07:08.

But since the 80s, the number being built has fallen

:07:09.:07:10.

Margaret Thatcher's right to buy policy saw an

:07:11.:07:15.

explosion in the number of people buying their homes from local

:07:16.:07:19.

Today, there are more than 1 million people on waiting lists

:07:20.:07:26.

That's why here in Sheffield they are now taking

:07:27.:07:29.

These are the first new council houses to be built in

:07:30.:07:36.

The plan is for the council to provide an extra

:07:37.:07:39.

Almost 500 of them will be brand-new.

:07:40.:07:45.

Most have already been let and some of the families have already

:07:46.:07:50.

Dean and Sarah have four children all with disabilities or

:07:51.:07:55.

Dean has osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

:07:56.:08:02.

They got the keys to their new home two weeks ago.

:08:03.:08:06.

We were in a smaller three bedroomed house before.

:08:07.:08:11.

Three boys with various difficulties and

:08:12.:08:13.

Once the adaptations are in, we will be well on our way.

:08:14.:08:32.

Around 40,000 people are registered as wanting a

:08:33.:08:35.

council house in Sheffield so new homes are vital.

:08:36.:08:37.

The need for social housing has never been greater.

:08:38.:08:40.

There was a great need for two and four bedroomed homes.

:08:41.:08:44.

Presumably the people that movie will have the right

:08:45.:08:47.

In 15 years, they might not be council

:08:48.:08:52.

That is true but not everyone wants to own a home.

:08:53.:08:59.

Sheffield's brand-new council houses are now complete.

:09:00.:09:04.

They are putting the finishing touches to the

:09:05.:09:07.

brand-new street before the final families moving.

:09:08.:09:22.

It will get colder over the next few days. Tomorrow will be cool and it

:09:23.:09:38.

will cool down for Thursday, Friday and the weekend. A cold day to come

:09:39.:09:43.

tomorrow. There will be some patchy rain and drizzle which will fizzle

:09:44.:09:47.

out as we have through the afternoon. The front we will get

:09:48.:09:50.

tomorrow will bring the patchy rain and it will open its doors to cooler

:09:51.:09:55.

air from the east. Getting cooler towards the end of the week and into

:09:56.:10:01.

the weekend. Out there at the moment, we have some mist and fog

:10:02.:10:05.

which will be replaced by thick cloud spreading westwards overnight.

:10:06.:10:12.

Perhaps the odd slogan flurry -- snow flurry to the hills. Tomorrow,

:10:13.:10:17.

a grey morning. Cloud producing patchy drizzle and the odd slow --

:10:18.:10:28.

snow flurry is possible. The cloud bases will lift as the afternoon

:10:29.:10:31.

goes on and it will appear brighter with temperatures only getting up to

:10:32.:10:37.

five Celsius. Cooler as we get to Thursday and Friday. We are looking

:10:38.:10:41.

at the risk of temperatures drop below freezing. Only getting a

:10:42.:10:45.

couple of degrees above freezing by day. A lot of cloud around to

:10:46.:10:49.

Thursday, Friday and the weekend. There will be a few light showers

:10:50.:10:53.

around Thursday and Friday. There could be some snow mixed in there

:10:54.:10:58.

and increasingly so as we have through the course of the weekend.

:10:59.:11:00.

That is it from the late A cold snap is looming. Not here

:11:01.:11:14.

just yet. Probably tomorrow night on with it. To get properly colder.

:11:15.:11:21.

Cold easterly winds, going to turn cloudy as well and we've got some

:11:22.:11:25.

snow showers on the way. Seems like this not out of the question. In the

:11:26.:11:32.

short term, some cold weather around, certainly across western

:11:33.:11:37.

areas of the UK. Skies clearing and temperatures dipping away in western

:11:38.:11:38.
