And from John Lennon's sunglasses to Jimi Hendrix's velvet jacket - | :00:10. | :00:12.

A bright and breezy day to come tomorrow, | :00:17. | :00:21.
just a small chance of catching a shower. | :00:22. | :00:23.
Join me for the live updated forecast. | :00:24. | :00:34.
It's been announced today that millions of pounds is to go | :00:35. | :00:38.
towards helping cancer patients in South Yorkshire. | :00:39. | :00:40.
The charity, Yorkshire Cancer Research, has announced | :00:41. | :00:43.
a ?4.5 million investment in Sheffield to finance | :00:44. | :00:45.
This aims to find new ways of treating and caring for patients. | :00:46. | :00:51.
It's estimated that more than 18,000 people in Sheffield are currently | :00:52. | :00:54.
And this number is expected to increase to over | :00:55. | :01:00.
Our health correspondent Jamie Coulson reports. | :01:01. | :01:06.
The treatment I've received coming here, I'll be quite honest, | :01:07. | :01:09.
Keith Scurrah was diagnosed with prostate cancer last October. | :01:10. | :01:16.
The 74-year-old has been undergoing chemotherapy | :01:17. | :01:19.
and other standard treatments, but has also chosen to be | :01:20. | :01:22.
part of a clinical trial at Weston Park Hospital | :01:23. | :01:25.
in Sheffield, because he understands the vital role research can play. | :01:26. | :01:33.
If it helps me, and it controls it, and it gives you extra life, | :01:34. | :01:37.
an extra couple of three years of whatever, I'm all for it. | :01:38. | :01:41.
I can go on for another few years and, at the moment, | :01:42. | :01:45.
We know the ability to run clinical trials... | :01:46. | :01:52.
Today, Yorkshire Cancer Research announced it would be making | :01:53. | :01:54.
an investment of ?4.5 million in new research, | :01:55. | :01:58.
working in partnership with the University of Sheffield | :01:59. | :02:01.
The charity say the money will be used to develop new ways | :02:02. | :02:07.
of diagnosing and assessing lung cancer, carrying out clinical | :02:08. | :02:10.
trials, improving the health and well-being of patients | :02:11. | :02:13.
There's a huge unmet need in Yorkshire | :02:14. | :02:20.
certainly in things like lung cancer, where outcomes are worse | :02:21. | :02:23.
So there's a lot we can do for the people here in Sheffield. | :02:24. | :02:27.
Over the next three years, ten cancer specialists will be | :02:28. | :02:31.
recruited and the research that follows is expected | :02:32. | :02:33.
from across the South Yorkshire area. | :02:34. | :02:39.
It is hoped today's funding will serve to attract even more | :02:40. | :02:42.
investment into Sheffield, meaning patients like Keith can | :02:43. | :02:45.
expect to see more trials and better treatments being developed. | :02:46. | :02:49.
Jamie Coulson, BBC Look North, Sheffield. | :02:50. | :02:54.
Well, earlier, I spoke to Professor Robert Coleman | :02:55. | :02:56.
and I asked him what kind of work the money would fund. | :02:57. | :03:02.
Yeah, this is an investment from Yorkshire Cancer Research | :03:03. | :03:04.
to allow us to greatly expand our clinical cancer | :03:05. | :03:08.
research programmes, both in terms of the early | :03:09. | :03:10.
diagnosis, but also clinical trials and allowing patients to live more | :03:11. | :03:15.
complete and better lives after a cancer treatment. | :03:16. | :03:21.
Now, the figures really are stark, aren't they? | :03:22. | :03:24.
One in two of us will be affected by cancer. | :03:25. | :03:27.
Well, it is a very common condition, that's right. | :03:28. | :03:34.
Thankfully, outcomes are improving very rapidly and we're at a very | :03:35. | :03:36.
This investment is to speed up that development even more and bring | :03:37. | :03:44.
those exciting new treatments - many of which don't | :03:45. | :03:48.
have the horrible side effects of chemotherapy - | :03:49. | :03:52.
to our patients before they can become available | :03:53. | :03:54.
Now, ?4.5 million sounds like an awful lot of money, | :03:55. | :04:02.
but in reality, it's probably just a drop in the ocean, isn't it? | :04:03. | :04:07.
Well, it is a lot of money and, with that money, we plan to appoint | :04:08. | :04:10.
ten senior researchers and provide them some infrastructure, | :04:11. | :04:15.
so that they'll have five years to get their research activities up | :04:16. | :04:19.
and running and we would expect, at the end of that time, | :04:20. | :04:22.
that they are bringing in investment from industry and grant | :04:23. | :04:25.
bodies into Sheffield, into Yorkshire and also that they've | :04:26. | :04:29.
got an international reputation in their areas of expertise, | :04:30. | :04:34.
so it's the beginning of a snowball, really. | :04:35. | :04:37.
Now, Sheffield has higher than average rates of both lung cancer | :04:38. | :04:40.
and premature cancer. Why is this? | :04:41. | :04:45.
High cancer frequencies go with a certain amount | :04:46. | :04:52.
Obviously, in lung cancer, smoking is the biggest cause | :04:53. | :04:58.
and we still have too many people smoking in this area of the country. | :04:59. | :05:02.
And sometimes, compared to other centres, the diagnosis is made | :05:03. | :05:06.
later than we would like, which makes it more difficult | :05:07. | :05:09.
to provide successful treatment outcomes. | :05:10. | :05:11.
Professor Robert Coleman, thank you for joining us this evening. | :05:12. | :05:14.
Floods Minister Therese Coffey visited Mytholmroyd today to look | :05:15. | :05:23.
at how designs are shaping up for a ?15 million | :05:24. | :05:25.
Her visit comes as the Environment Agency has begun knocking down homes | :05:26. | :05:31.
to widen the River Calder - a move some local residents | :05:32. | :05:33.
The Minister says the agency needs to continue producing | :05:34. | :05:37.
schemes which will protect homes and businesses. | :05:38. | :05:51.
The government has been sent a "final warning" | :05:52. | :05:53.
by the European Commission for failing to address repeated | :05:54. | :05:55.
breaches of legal air pollution limits in Leeds | :05:56. | :05:57.
Air pollution is linked to the early deaths of about | :05:58. | :06:01.
The Commission has said it may take the matter to the European Court | :06:02. | :06:06.
Sheffield lad Joe Root was today unveiled as England's new test | :06:07. | :06:10.
cricket captain at his home ground of Headingley. | :06:11. | :06:12.
Root, who's 26 and has just become a dad, will be on England duties | :06:13. | :06:15.
next week for the short one-day international tour | :06:16. | :06:17.
But he'll not need to begin planning his Test captaincy just yet - | :06:18. | :06:21.
his first match in charge will be against South Africa | :06:22. | :06:23.
As a very small kid, you dream of being England captain, | :06:24. | :06:28.
you always want to, you know, get right to the top | :06:29. | :06:32.
of your profession or, when you're dreaming as a kid, | :06:33. | :06:34.
I think more recent times have just been about being the best player | :06:35. | :06:38.
I could be within the team and helping support and, | :06:39. | :06:42.
now I've got this opportunity, it's a huge honour and I'm just | :06:43. | :06:45.
really looking forward to hopefully putting my stamp on things. | :06:46. | :06:51.
Now, a trip to an auction in Ryedale might get you thinking | :06:52. | :06:55.
about furniture or cattle, but this Friday, they've got | :06:56. | :06:57.
something very different going under the hammer. | :06:58. | :06:59.
Items belonging to some of the most famous names | :07:00. | :07:01.
in music are up for grabs, including John Lennon's | :07:02. | :07:06.
sunglasses or a velvet jacket worn by Jimi Hendrix. | :07:07. | :07:08.
Charlotte Leeming's had a sneak preview. | :07:09. | :07:10.
At Ryedale Auctioneers in Kirby Moorside, there's the usual | :07:11. | :07:12.
antiques and furniture you'd expect to find. | :07:13. | :07:16.
But in one corner of the room, there's a special collection | :07:17. | :07:18.
which will have music lovers absolutely drooling. | :07:19. | :07:22.
It's a rock and pop memorabilia treasure trove, with items from some | :07:23. | :07:25.
of the most famous artists of the '60s and '70s, | :07:26. | :07:28.
including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, | :07:29. | :07:30.
So, Angus, amongst the album covers, there are some quirky items, | :07:31. | :07:37.
like this wooden spoon - what's this? | :07:38. | :07:39.
That spoon has been signed by John Lennon and Yoko. | :07:40. | :07:44.
Lennon's signature has pretty much faded all away, | :07:45. | :07:46.
Do we know if they used that to make pasta at night? | :07:47. | :07:54.
Well, possibly, but I couldn't guarantee that! | :07:55. | :07:56.
No prizes for guessing who these belong to. | :07:57. | :07:57.
John Lennon's, but there's a bit of a story behind these? | :07:58. | :08:00.
Yes, the back story of those is that John lost his temper on the phone | :08:01. | :08:04.
to somebody in London - a producer or an agent or somebody - | :08:05. | :08:07.
smashed them on the floor and they got thrown in the bin, | :08:08. | :08:10.
So they have had some repair work and a few new parts, | :08:11. | :08:16.
but principally, they were rescued out of the bin. | :08:17. | :08:18.
And what might they go for? The estimate is 3,000-5,000. | :08:19. | :08:22.
Something that is just amazing is this picture here behind us. | :08:23. | :08:25.
A Rolling Stones fan will love Keith Richards here. | :08:26. | :08:28.
I think this has got to be one of my favourite lots in the sale. | :08:29. | :08:32.
It'd look fantastic in a music bar, something like that. | :08:33. | :08:36.
I've 50 got quid for that? Any good? | :08:37. | :08:39.
Put a couple of noughts on and we'll be there. | :08:40. | :08:44.
Anything connected to such giants of the music world remains hugely | :08:45. | :08:48.
Most items in this auction come from a private | :08:49. | :08:55.
One of the priciest will be a black jacket owned by John Lennon. | :08:56. | :09:01.
It's one of Ryedale Auctioneers most exciting sales and could make that | :09:02. | :09:09.
private collector a fair bit of money on Friday. | :09:10. | :09:13.
Charlotte Leeming, BBC Look North, Kirby Moorside. | :09:14. | :09:21.
I know someone who could do with that jacket to upgrade his wardrobe | :09:22. | :09:29.
but would you pay ten grand? Certainly not. I would get one of | :09:30. | :09:33.
the all-weather jacket out. Let me show you this picture from | :09:34. | :09:36.
Ribblehead yesterday, an absolutely magnificent shot, don't forget to | :09:37. | :09:42.
keep the pictures coming in. And the forecast for the next 24 | :09:43. | :09:46.
hours is not looking too bad, variable cloud, quite breezy | :09:47. | :09:51.
tomorrow, sunshine and one or two showers, high pressure on Friday | :09:52. | :09:55.
will ensure a nice day, this week cold and bringing some drizzle on | :09:56. | :10:01.
Saturday, Sunday with an east and west split, cloudy in the West, | :10:02. | :10:05.
brightly in the east. 6 degrees possible on Monday, a touch of | :10:06. | :10:10.
spring to come. The rain is leaving because, some showers could follow | :10:11. | :10:15.
from the West, but many will be dry tonight with clear spells and we | :10:16. | :10:19.
will see temperatures no lower than five Celsius. Tomorrow could cloud | :10:20. | :10:24.
over in the morning, that bringing some showers but breaking up in the | :10:25. | :10:28.
afternoon, looking bright but windy with sunny spells and one or two | :10:29. | :10:35.
showers. Top tether coming in at 50 Fahrenheit. Through Thursday evening | :10:36. | :10:41.
and night, some rain developing, mainly across the Pennines, eastern | :10:42. | :10:47.
areas staying dry. First light on Friday looks quite cloudy and damp | :10:48. | :10:52.
in the West, further east it will be brighter. Fine on Friday, a lot of | :10:53. | :10:55.
dry weather over the weekend, perhaps patchy rain in the West. | :10:56. | :10:59.
That is it from us, I the weekend. Wouldn't promise you | :11:00. | :11:03.
two dry days but you never know, here is Nick with the national | :11:04. | :11:05.
picture. Hello. We put that cold weekend well | :11:06. | :11:10.
behind us now. Temperatures edging upwards and our weather watchers are | :11:11. | :11:14.
seeing plenty of signs of spring. Spending more time looking down than | :11:15. | :11:17.
looking up at the skies, we see these early blooms. They are set to | :11:18. | :11:21.
continue as we are set to stay mild for several more days to come. | :11:22. | :11:25.
Average daytime temperature this time of year around eight, but | :11:26. | :11:28.
getting into double figures all the way through the weekend. The start | :11:29. | :11:34.
of next week into the mid-teens potentially, very mild indeed. It | :11:35. | :11:37.
was 14 in Lincolnshire | :11:38. | :11:39. |
