Tonight: for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
After 80 years, the Ritz Ballroom in Brighouse closes its doors | :00:00. | :00:07.
as a result of a legal row with its London namesake. | :00:08. | :00:20.
And Yorkshire's triple Olympic champion Andy Triggs Hodge | :00:21. | :00:24.
Cold and unsettled over the next few days as we head into March. | :00:25. | :00:28.
Join me for the live, updated weekend forecast. | :00:29. | :00:34.
A Yorkshire MP has taken up the case of the Ritz Ballroom in Brighouse, | :00:35. | :00:41.
which has closed its doors as a result of a legal row | :00:42. | :00:45.
Despite trading as The Ritz for 80 years, the Yorkshire venue was told | :00:46. | :00:49.
A band due to play there has also waded into the legal row, | :00:50. | :00:55.
as our business correspondent Danni Hewson explains. | :00:56. | :00:58.
# I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle...# | :00:59. | :01:04.
The lyrics to say one thing, but Yorkshire band the Rozzers used | :01:05. | :01:07.
a traditional envelope to send their message | :01:08. | :01:08.
to the Ritz Hotel in London - as well as a tongue-in-cheek invoice | :01:09. | :01:11.
for lost earnings, the Police tribute band wondered if it | :01:12. | :01:15.
The general public keep confusing the police, law enforcers, | :01:16. | :01:21.
with the Police, '80s punk and reggae band, | :01:22. | :01:24.
and it's having a detrimental affect on our brand. | :01:25. | :01:27.
The letter has become a social media hit, but, all joking aside, | :01:28. | :01:30.
the band is one of many left out of pocket. | :01:31. | :01:33.
They had been due to perform at the Brighouse Ritz next month, | :01:34. | :01:37.
but a threat of legal action by the London hotel has forced | :01:38. | :01:39.
It just struck us as being farcical, really. | :01:40. | :01:44.
There's probably about 300 miles between the two venues, | :01:45. | :01:48.
and I can't believe anybody has ever mistaken a ballroom in west | :01:49. | :01:52.
Yorkshire for one of the most famous hotels in the world in London. | :01:53. | :01:58.
But that was what prompted us to write the letter, | :01:59. | :02:02.
It's been the Ritz for 80 years, so the new owners, who never | :02:03. | :02:09.
expected a row over the name, could potentially call time. | :02:10. | :02:13.
As we know, there's lots of Ritzes all over the UK, | :02:14. | :02:16.
whether it's cinemas, cafes, ballrooms as in Brighouse, | :02:17. | :02:20.
so I am a little bit perturbed, and I can't quite understand why | :02:21. | :02:25.
they would want to attack the Ritz in Brighouse. | :02:26. | :02:27.
But we have asked the owners to supply us with the documents | :02:28. | :02:31.
they have been provided from the Ritz, | :02:32. | :02:33.
and I am happy to speak to them direct here in London. | :02:34. | :02:38.
From the roadside it looks like it's all over. | :02:39. | :02:40.
The sign is down and the venue has stopped trading, | :02:41. | :02:43.
but, behind the scenes, the owners say they are | :02:44. | :02:45.
Though they did not want to speak on camera today, they did tell me | :02:46. | :02:51.
they haven't given up the fight just yet. | :02:52. | :02:55.
It may seem like a David and Goliath battle, but one legal expert says | :02:56. | :02:58.
People are really terrified about legal costs. | :02:59. | :03:03.
They are worried that they are going to lose the roof over their head | :03:04. | :03:08.
by paying lawyers to defend them in court, and so sometimes | :03:09. | :03:10.
they will just roll over, even when there is | :03:11. | :03:13.
a pretty lousy case advanced against them. | :03:14. | :03:16.
The other Ritz has so far declined to comment on the situation, | :03:17. | :03:19.
but thousands of people have signed a petition to save | :03:20. | :03:22.
It's ten years since 75-year-old Bill Hendry was killed | :03:23. | :03:30.
by a hit-and-run driver while he was out walking his dog. | :03:31. | :03:36.
Despite an extensive investigation, the person responsible | :03:37. | :03:38.
Today, Bill's family said they hoped his killer would finally | :03:39. | :03:44.
have the courage to come forward, as Emma Glasbey reports. | :03:45. | :03:49.
They could never have imagined they would still be trying to get | :03:50. | :03:53.
justice ten years on, but today the family | :03:54. | :03:56.
of Bill Hendry returned to the spot where he was knocked down and killed | :03:57. | :03:59.
The driver didn't stop and left him in the road. | :04:00. | :04:05.
We are not seeking revenge or anything like that, | :04:06. | :04:11.
we just want a bit of justice, and somebody to have the courage to | :04:12. | :04:16.
either say, I know who's done it, or the person who's done it. | :04:17. | :04:20.
I have lived in Knaresborough since 1968, | :04:21. | :04:23.
and I walk around knowing that somebody's done it, | :04:24. | :04:26.
Bill's beloved dog Abby ran home after he was hit and was found | :04:27. | :04:35.
waiting on the doorstep of their house. | :04:36. | :04:38.
Bill died in hospital a short time later. | :04:39. | :04:41.
Can I just give you one of these, please? | :04:42. | :04:43.
I'm just appealing for some fresh information... | :04:44. | :04:45.
Police admit there are no new lines of investigation, so this morning | :04:46. | :04:49.
officers were stopping motorists to try to get fresh information. | :04:50. | :04:54.
Bill Hendry had just been to the post office. | :04:55. | :04:57.
He was crossing Stockwell Lane here with his dog Abby when he was hit. | :04:58. | :05:01.
Now, it was just after 9.30am in the morning. | :05:02. | :05:04.
But, although people nearby told police they heard | :05:05. | :05:09.
the collision, no-one saw the vehicle involved. | :05:10. | :05:13.
Does the family have confidence that you will get | :05:14. | :05:16.
If they hadn't had the courage then, will they have the courage now? | :05:17. | :05:25.
knows who's done it to do the decent thing. | :05:26. | :05:33.
Police say the person who hit Bill Hendry was | :05:34. | :05:36.
driving a car or small van, and was travelling at speed. | :05:37. | :05:40.
They will have known exactly what happened and the vehicle | :05:41. | :05:43.
Detectives believe this is their last chance to catch them. | :05:44. | :05:49.
Emma Glasbey, BBC Look North, Knaresborough. | :05:50. | :05:55.
A brief look at some of the day's other stories: | :05:56. | :05:57.
Two further arrests have been made after a man | :05:58. | :06:00.
23-year-old Aseel Al-Essaie was attacked in the Upperthorpe area | :06:01. | :06:03.
Two people were arrested earlier today after armed police stopped | :06:04. | :06:09.
Five people who were previously arrested have been released on bail. | :06:10. | :06:17.
Meanwhile, detectives investigating the murder of a Maltby pensioner | :06:18. | :06:20.
have made an appeal for information in Crimewatch tonight. | :06:21. | :06:22.
80-year-old Tommy Ward was robbed and beaten at his home last October. | :06:23. | :06:27.
He died four months later from his injuries. | :06:28. | :06:31.
This cash box was stolen - it was later found dumped but around | :06:32. | :06:34.
Detectives are trying to trace the driver of a Saab 9-3 car seen | :06:35. | :06:40.
in the area at the time of the attack. | :06:41. | :06:45.
Independent traders in Rotherham are warning that shoppers could be | :06:46. | :06:47.
driven away from the town, if the local Tesco starts | :06:48. | :06:50.
The store wants people who shop with them to spend at least ?5 | :06:51. | :06:57.
The council says any decision on changes to the original planning | :06:58. | :07:02.
consent would need go to public consultation. | :07:03. | :07:07.
And tributes have been paid to the Leeds-born MP | :07:08. | :07:10.
Sir Gerald Kaufman, who's died at the age of 86. | :07:11. | :07:12.
He was educated at Leeds Grammar School and worked as a journalist, | :07:13. | :07:15.
before being elected to parliament in 1970. | :07:16. | :07:19.
He became Britain's longest-serving Labour MP. | :07:20. | :07:22.
Jeremy Corbyn said he was an "iconic and irascible figure" | :07:23. | :07:27.
within the party, while Tony Blair described him as passionate | :07:28. | :07:30.
Yorkshire's triple Olympic rowing champion Andy Triggs Hodge has | :07:31. | :07:37.
The 37-year-old from Hebden has won gold for Great Britain at the last | :07:38. | :07:42.
three Olympic Games, along with four world titles | :07:43. | :07:45.
He has said tonight he'll focus more time on helping others to row. | :07:46. | :07:52.
Carla Fowler looks back at his career. | :07:53. | :07:55.
And it is Great Britain in the men's at the Olympics... | :07:56. | :07:57.
A crowning moment in a glittering career - | :07:58. | :07:59.
Andrew Triggs Hodge here, part of the eight-man rowing team | :08:00. | :08:03.
to take gold at last year's Rio Olympics. | :08:04. | :08:05.
It was actually his third gold, having previously also won the top | :08:06. | :08:09.
spot for Great Britain in the London and Beijing games. | :08:10. | :08:13.
On top of this, he's won four world titles, | :08:14. | :08:18.
and the European Championships at Belgrade two years ago - | :08:19. | :08:21.
not bad for a Yorkshire lad from Hebden. | :08:22. | :08:23.
There is not much rowing in Yorkshire, | :08:24. | :08:25.
But, no, I vowed when I left school, I said, I'm never going to get a job | :08:26. | :08:31.
that takes over my life, and I will never move to London. | :08:32. | :08:34.
And, unfortunately, rowing represents breaking | :08:35. | :08:35.
Today, Andrew Triggs Hodge announced at the end | :08:36. | :08:42.
As a husband and father of two young children, | :08:43. | :08:51.
he'll be very much in demand, but, as to his new job, | :08:52. | :08:54.
well, he told Look North about that last year. | :08:55. | :08:56.
I studied water management for my degree, so I'm going to help | :08:57. | :09:02.
with building a massive sewer down in London. | :09:03. | :09:04.
Oh, really? Yeah! | :09:05. | :09:05.
As well as building London's new super sewer, Andy Triggs Hodge | :09:06. | :09:08.
says he hopes to support more rowing start-ups in the north to give more | :09:09. | :09:13.
young people the chance to participate in the sport | :09:14. | :09:15.
Now let's take a look at the weather. | :09:16. | :09:27.
You are fully up-to-date with the news but here is the forecast. What | :09:28. | :09:34.
is in store, birthday boy? Looking unsettled and cold this | :09:35. | :09:38.
week, some rain on Thursday and Friday. This week, unsettled weather | :09:39. | :09:43.
rain or showers and some sunshine. Chance of snow over hills as we head | :09:44. | :09:51.
into spring. Low pressure in charge, bands of rain and showers working in | :09:52. | :09:55.
from the south-west. This feature interesting with some hill snow on | :09:56. | :09:59.
the highest ground, it may well become stuck across as through | :10:00. | :10:03.
Thursday and Friday, but some uncertainty for the second half of | :10:04. | :10:07.
the week. Temperatures dropping away nicely right now. Some wintry | :10:08. | :10:12.
showers and icy patches will be an issue, particularly later at night. | :10:13. | :10:16.
The Met Office have a warning for that. Temperatures close to freezing | :10:17. | :10:21.
point in rural areas, 32 Fahrenheit. Tomorrow a bright morning in the | :10:22. | :10:26.
east with sunshine and some wintry showers in the penning areas of West | :10:27. | :10:28.
and South Yorkshire. Otherwise a fine morning. Then showers pushing | :10:29. | :10:34.
back in from the West, becoming longer outbreaks of rain, some Hells | :10:35. | :10:38.
no break-up of the tops across the Pennines. Further east not bad. Dry | :10:39. | :10:43.
with some sunshine and temperatures around seven Celsius. This rain and | :10:44. | :10:48.
sleet with some snow over the top, a band pushing east words, gradually | :10:49. | :10:52.
into early Wednesday becomes dry, and another issue with ice are | :10:53. | :10:58.
slight Wednesday morning. Further ahead, Thursday and Friday could | :10:59. | :11:01.
potentially be quite wet at times. That's it from us. Here is a summary | :11:02. | :11:04.
and the John Hammond has the weather for the | :11:05. | :11:04.
rest of the country. According to one man-made | :11:05. | :11:16.
definition, spring begins in a couple of days, but in reality | :11:17. | :11:21.
weather does it own thing at its own pace. This was taken in Midlothian, | :11:22. | :11:28.
a funny old day, some lovely rainbows, downpours, burst of | :11:29. | :11:31.
sunshine, and out of the breeze | :11:32. | :11:32. |
