Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Tonight: Researchers in Yorkshire find evidence that poor air quality | :00:00. | :00:07.
doesn't just increase the risk of asthma , but can cause it. | :00:08. | :00:12.
The murdered MP's family gather for an event in Yorkshire. | :00:13. | :00:19.
Changeable week to come across Yorkshire, but there will be | :00:20. | :00:21.
some decent days Tuesday and Thursday, for example. | :00:22. | :00:23.
Join me for that week-ahead forecast. | :00:24. | :00:34.
Scientists from the University of Leeds have found emissions | :00:35. | :00:37.
from diesel vehicles don't just aggravate asthma, | :00:38. | :00:39.
It's been revealed as the BBC launches "so I can breathe" - | :00:40. | :00:46.
It's worrying for residents living in a number of our cities | :00:47. | :00:52.
where pollution levels are particularly high. | :00:53. | :00:53.
Our health correspondent, Jamie Coulson, reports. | :00:54. | :00:59.
You can barely see it, but polluted air may be | :01:00. | :01:01.
That's why scientists from Leeds and Barcelona are in Bradford, | :01:02. | :01:07.
looking at the link between childhood asthma | :01:08. | :01:09.
and the kind of pollution levels they've been measuring | :01:10. | :01:11.
When you see it there, over 100,000, is that bad for us? | :01:12. | :01:18.
That is bad for us because these are the particles that kind of go | :01:19. | :01:21.
The other thing I notice about this is you only need a bus to go | :01:22. | :01:29.
past and look at that - it jumps right up. | :01:30. | :01:33.
Isaac has had asthma since he was two. | :01:34. | :01:35.
You just think asthma is brought on by something else, | :01:36. | :01:37.
Nobody's ever said to me that his asthma is linked to pollution. | :01:38. | :01:42.
If somebody did tell me that, obviously I would be up in arms. | :01:43. | :01:49.
At Leeds University, a researcher has fed | :01:50. | :01:50.
This is an air pollution map in Bradford that shows the red | :01:51. | :01:59.
as the highest and the blue as the lowest. | :02:00. | :02:02.
You can overlay these maps with locations of interest, | :02:03. | :02:04.
like all residents' addresses for children you have | :02:05. | :02:06.
Effectively show how much risk someone is exposed to. | :02:07. | :02:09.
The project is not yet complete, but early findings suggest emissions | :02:10. | :02:16.
Nitrogen dioxide and black carbon are significantly linked. | :02:17. | :02:24.
A child could not have got asthma if they were not | :02:25. | :02:27.
exposed, and that has a lot of implications, obviously. | :02:28. | :02:34.
The research is already proving useful. | :02:35. | :02:35.
Bradford, along with West Yorkshire's other councils, | :02:36. | :02:37.
have agreed a low emissions strategy and it includes turning some | :02:38. | :02:40.
of the county's most polluted hotspots into clean air zones. | :02:41. | :02:50.
And this bit makes particularly interesting reading. | :02:51. | :02:52.
There's a commitment to convert the entire fleet | :02:53. | :02:54.
of West Yorkshire buses to meet low emissions standards. | :02:55. | :02:56.
The research from here in Bradford suggests that could prevent around | :02:57. | :02:58.
No consolation for those already affected. | :02:59. | :03:05.
If something could be done about it, that would be fantastic. | :03:06. | :03:08.
The man charged with thwarting terrorist activity here in Yorkshire | :03:09. | :03:17.
has called on people to act on their instincts and report | :03:18. | :03:20.
anything they believe could be linked with a terror plot. | :03:21. | :03:24.
This government video has been released to advise people | :03:25. | :03:27.
on what to do if they suspect an attack is imminent. | :03:28. | :03:31.
The head of the North East Counter Terror Unit told Look North he wants | :03:32. | :03:34.
to root out all forms of radicalisation that | :03:35. | :03:37.
could lead to an individual or a group carrying an attack. | :03:38. | :03:43.
It is about the general public acting on their suspicions on things | :03:44. | :03:48.
Is there a danger we create a climate of fear where everyone | :03:49. | :03:54.
That's certainly not what we intend to do. | :03:55. | :03:57.
There is a balance to be struck between the two. | :03:58. | :04:00.
We would always welcome a call, well intended, from the public. | :04:01. | :04:05.
Dr Afshin Shahi is a terrorism expert at Bradford University. | :04:06. | :04:09.
I asked him if this type of campaign was necessary. | :04:10. | :04:13.
There are less terrorism activities taking place in 2017 | :04:14. | :04:17.
But that doesn't mean terrorism is more irrelevant. | :04:18. | :04:25.
When you think about it, actually, the number one security issue | :04:26. | :04:27.
that is really facing everybody, not just Yorkshire but in the rest | :04:28. | :04:30.
of the world, is environment, food security, water security. | :04:31. | :04:37.
Although terrorism is very important and we all have | :04:38. | :04:39.
to be vigilant about it, we should refrain from panicking. | :04:40. | :04:43.
I don't see any harm to ask people to be vigilant, | :04:44. | :04:50.
but we're dealing with a very multifaceted and | :04:51. | :04:54.
Radicalisation is a very, very complex process. | :04:55. | :04:59.
It requires a complex and multifaceted and more | :05:00. | :05:01.
In my opinion, it would be very simplistic to only rely | :05:02. | :05:07.
on the security establishment to resolve this problem. | :05:08. | :05:11.
This is a sociological, cultural, economic and political problem | :05:12. | :05:15.
and requires a more comprehensive approach if you really | :05:16. | :05:17.
Is there a bigger risk of terrorism here in Yorkshire compared | :05:18. | :05:22.
When you do look at the terrorism map of Britain, if I can use such | :05:23. | :05:34.
a term, Yorkshire is not basically listed as a number one destination. | :05:35. | :05:37.
There are more problematic areas in this country than Yorkshire. | :05:38. | :05:41.
They are quite keen to stress that it's not just | :05:42. | :05:45.
That's a change of course for them, isn't it? | :05:46. | :05:50.
Islamic terrorism constitutes only a fraction of terrorism, | :05:51. | :05:54.
the type of terrorism we are facing in the 21st century. | :05:55. | :05:57.
If you genuinely want to address extremism, if you genuinely | :05:58. | :06:01.
want to address terrorism, you need to have the wider picture | :06:02. | :06:05.
and I think it's extremely unhelpful to only focus on one | :06:06. | :06:07.
A man is being questioned for a second time over the murder | :06:08. | :06:18.
of a West Yorkshire schoolgirl more than 50 years ago. | :06:19. | :06:22.
14-year-old Elsie Frost was discovered stabbed to death | :06:23. | :06:27.
confirmed they've re-arrested a 79-year-old man in Berkshire | :06:28. | :06:31.
He's also being questioned about a separate offence | :06:32. | :06:40.
Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a body | :06:41. | :06:44.
Officers were called to York railway station in the early hours of this | :06:45. | :06:49.
morning following reports of a man acting strangely, | :06:50. | :06:51.
A body of a man in his 50s was discovered later | :06:52. | :06:55.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident | :06:56. | :06:59.
A fundraising event has been held in Cleckheaton in memory of Jo Cox, | :07:00. | :07:04.
the Batley Spen MP who was murdered in her | :07:05. | :07:06.
The Jo Cox Foundation was set up to raise funds | :07:07. | :07:12.
Harry was there - he spoke to the chairman | :07:13. | :07:16.
of Huddersfield Town, Dean Hoyle, and Jo's mum. | :07:17. | :07:19.
We always ask ourselves, "What would Jo do?" | :07:20. | :07:23.
Whatever we attend, whatever we go to, we say, | :07:24. | :07:25.
And to look around tonight, see the lovely people | :07:26. | :07:33.
from all sides of the community, she would have absolutely loved it. | :07:34. | :07:39.
And hopefully we're carrying on Jo's legacy of more in common. | :07:40. | :07:45.
That's what she truly believed, that we have more in common | :07:46. | :07:48.
And hopefully we'll do Jo proud tonight. | :07:49. | :07:55.
Dean, from your point of view, chairman of Huddersfield Town, | :07:56. | :07:57.
why did you want to get yourself involved? | :07:58. | :08:00.
But also with the football club being in the centre | :08:01. | :08:06.
of the community, to bring cohesion together, we want to play our part. | :08:07. | :08:11.
Football is a sport everybody likes and as a football club we can really | :08:12. | :08:16.
We want to support a wonderful thing, but it's more a case | :08:17. | :08:21.
of we know the family really well and we'd like to be a part of this. | :08:22. | :08:25.
We've coped, I think, Harry, because as Kim has always said, | :08:26. | :08:35.
you can shut yourself away and be miserable. | :08:36. | :08:39.
Like I said before, what would Jo want us to do? | :08:40. | :08:44.
And whatever we've done, we've done in Jo's name and we just | :08:45. | :08:48.
hope she'd be proud of us, and I'm sure she will. | :08:49. | :08:51.
You've done something right, lass, I'll tell you that. | :08:52. | :08:58.
You've got a special challenge for our weather | :08:59. | :09:01.
If Paul will wear this piece of art tonight, | :09:02. | :09:09.
we'll make a big donation to the charity. | :09:10. | :09:14.
If Paul wears this tonight, we'll make a big donation and happy days. | :09:15. | :09:19.
Lovely to talk to you, enjoy the evening, thank you very | :09:20. | :09:21.
As a big Bradford City fan, that would hurt. | :09:22. | :09:37.
Did you do it? Have a look at this. Well done, you look slightly | :09:38. | :09:40.
traumatised, but you're a good sport. I wore it for 30 seconds and | :09:41. | :09:48.
to let Bradford City fans know, it's now in | :09:49. | :09:48.
cool, it will be windy at times as well and still rather unsettled with | :09:49. | :11:06.
some blustery showers around. That's the London forecast and now for the | :11:07. | :11:09.
National forecast, over to Nick Miller. | :11:10. | :11:18.
North-west France and Plymouth were miles apart weather-wise. This | :11:19. | :11:25.
southern flank in north-west France there was a wind gusts of 120 mph | :11:26. | :11:30.
which we just dodged. That area of low pressure continues to move | :11:31. | :11:33.
quickly south-eastwards so that by tomorrow it is in Italy on its | :11:34. | :11:37.
southern flank, stormy in Sardinia and around it strong winds blowing | :11:38. | :11:42.
through south-east France. We've got a little bump in the ice bars with | :11:43. | :11:46.
lighter winds, a brief ridge of high pressure, things briefly settled | :11:47. | :11:49.
going into tomorrow, overnight there are some showers around moving | :11:50. | :11:53.
through western Scotland and north-west England and the Midlands, | :11:54. | :11:57.
clearing Wales, one or two in the east, the North Sea tip of high | :11:58. | :11:59.
pressure, things briefly settled | :12:00. | :12:00. |
