Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Yorkshire's politicians tells us how they were caught up | :00:08. | :00:10.
And convictions for three brothers, a woman and another man for a string | :00:11. | :00:14.
of sexual offences against teenage girls in South Yorkshire. | :00:15. | :00:19.
After a miserable day for some us, it looks set to improve | :00:20. | :00:22.
Join me for a live, updated forecast shortly. | :00:23. | :00:35.
Tonight, the lockdown which has kept politicians incarcerated | :00:36. | :00:38.
in the Houses of Parliament is over, but a Yorkshire MP has described how | :00:39. | :00:41.
she witnessed at close hand today's terror attack. | :00:42. | :00:43.
Mary Creagh, the MP for Wakefield, told how events unfolded in front | :00:44. | :00:47.
of her before she ran to warn staff at the local tube station. | :00:48. | :00:50.
The incident also affected groups of schoolchildren | :00:51. | :00:52.
Our political editor Len Tingle has this report. | :00:53. | :01:03.
Virtually all our MPs were in Westminster today. | :01:04. | :01:07.
Mary Creagh, the Wakefield MP was on her way to vote | :01:08. | :01:09.
as shots were fired, we now know by the police. | :01:10. | :01:12.
She was in a tunnel leading to the voting chamber, | :01:13. | :01:14.
I saw people running towards me and I was kind of like why | :01:15. | :01:19.
are they coming this way when I'm going that way? | :01:20. | :01:24.
Penny Mordaunt, just ran up and said their shots | :01:25. | :01:31.
Penny Mordaunt, just ran up and said there's shots | :01:32. | :01:33.
being fired, we need to get out of this place now. | :01:34. | :01:36.
I turned round, the escalators were on the down, we | :01:37. | :01:38.
So we had no choice but to go out of the revolving doors one at a time | :01:39. | :01:43.
and that's when I sort of shouted to the security guard, | :01:44. | :01:46.
you've got to open these doors, we've got to get out | :01:47. | :01:49.
I'm now going to suspend the sitting of the House. | :01:50. | :01:52.
This House is now suspended, but please wait here. | :01:53. | :01:54.
MPs already in the chamber, found themselves locked | :01:55. | :01:56.
in for their own safety, including Huddersfield's | :01:57. | :01:58.
I've sent out some pictures just to reassure people know one's hurt, | :01:59. | :02:05.
Parliament has been totally disrupted by this terrorist incident | :02:06. | :02:11.
and we have got to make sure that we find out what | :02:12. | :02:16.
But it wasn't just MPs, there were at least two large groups | :02:17. | :02:23.
85 from Herring Thorpe Junior in Rotherham and another party from | :02:24. | :02:29.
They put on social media that all were safe and well. | :02:30. | :02:34.
Another party from Sheffield University found themselves locked | :02:35. | :02:36.
into the neighbouring MPs' office complex. | :02:37. | :02:40.
I'm not sure we're right in the middle of it, | :02:41. | :02:42.
there are hundreds, probably thousands, we don't really know how | :02:43. | :02:45.
The reaction of our students has been the reaction | :02:46. | :02:48.
of everybody down here, to respond calmly and carefully | :02:49. | :02:52.
to the excellent advice we have been receiving from all the security | :02:53. | :02:56.
staff down here in the parliamentary estate about where to go, | :02:57. | :03:00.
The security measures are still going on. | :03:01. | :03:07.
MPs, all determined to get back to business as soon as possible. | :03:08. | :03:10.
Protecting Parliament and MPs appears to have largely worked. | :03:11. | :03:14.
But that's no comfort for the tragic casualties among the many thousands | :03:15. | :03:20.
who come to see this historic building every single day. | :03:21. | :03:25.
Well our reporter Heidi Tomlinson joins me now. | :03:26. | :03:29.
We now know that five people died in this attack this afternoon. That | :03:30. | :03:42.
includes the police officer on duty outside the houses of parliament, | :03:43. | :03:47.
trying to protect the politicians. The number of people injured has | :03:48. | :03:52.
gone up from 20 to 40. Some are in hospital critically injured, some | :03:53. | :03:56.
are in a more stable condition. Quite a few of our political and is | :03:57. | :04:00.
where in London today. They were released from the lockdown a couple | :04:01. | :04:04.
of hours ago. They are all OK. We have had from a liberal back -- | :04:05. | :04:10.
Liberal Democrat peer. Right from me hearing | :04:11. | :04:13.
the shouting and the gunshots, knowing there was something wrong, | :04:14. | :04:16.
through to the police appearing and we were told to stay | :04:17. | :04:18.
in our rooms and the armed police arrived, opened the doors and said | :04:19. | :04:22.
we had to go to the Central Lobby where the police kept us | :04:23. | :04:25.
safe and calm. It was eerie and it was a little bit | :04:26. | :04:29.
surreal, but we did feel the police were keeping us safe | :04:30. | :04:33.
and doing their jobs. What are the security forces | :04:34. | :04:46.
focusing on the night? Extra alarmed officers are being deployed across | :04:47. | :04:50.
London to reassure and protect people. An attack like this was | :04:51. | :04:58.
anticipated and we are all aware of the threat to MPs, after Jo Cox was | :04:59. | :05:09.
attacked and killed last year. My husband has treated saying, people | :05:10. | :05:19.
will be wanting us to be frightened and fear, let's be neither. | :05:20. | :05:21.
There's almost certainly a link to Isis group, we can't be sure, | :05:22. | :05:24.
but they're determined to bring the war against them, | :05:25. | :05:27.
which is being fought in Iraq and Syria, back to countries | :05:28. | :05:29.
And this is the terrible result we are seeing this | :05:30. | :05:33.
afternoon with people killed and people injured. | :05:34. | :05:35.
The Metropolitan Police said the response will be ongoing for some | :05:36. | :05:40.
time and it is important for them to gather the information and evidence | :05:41. | :05:43.
they need and public safety is their top priority. Thank you very much. | :05:44. | :05:49.
In other news, a shocking story of abuse. | :05:50. | :05:51.
Young teenage girls in Sheffield were groomed by three brothers | :05:52. | :05:53.
They were offered drink and drugs but then forced to have sex. | :05:54. | :05:58.
Tonight four men and one woman have been convicted. | :05:59. | :06:00.
South Yorkshire Police have praised the young people who were abused | :06:01. | :06:03.
Four men and a woman, they are the latest faces | :06:04. | :06:10.
In some cases their harrowing crimes date back more than a decade. | :06:11. | :06:15.
Shane Whiteley, 30 years old, guilty of conspiracy to rape. | :06:16. | :06:18.
His younger brother Matthew, guilty of the same charge. | :06:19. | :06:22.
And another brother, Christopher, just 23 years old and convicted | :06:23. | :06:26.
of three rapes of young people, sexual assault and | :06:27. | :06:30.
And Amanda Spencer, a woman in her 20s, convicted of four counts | :06:31. | :06:38.
She was already serving 12 years in prison after being convicted | :06:39. | :06:46.
We want them to put their trust in us and they've done that. | :06:47. | :06:54.
These very, very brave nine vulnerable women have come forward. | :06:55. | :06:56.
They've given their evidence, they've told their very | :06:57. | :07:01.
Not only that, the supporting family. | :07:02. | :07:04.
We can't forget the effect on the family, mums, | :07:05. | :07:07.
dads, their siblings, they've all come forward and told | :07:08. | :07:10.
the story and that's what we'd encourage all victims | :07:11. | :07:12.
Sentencing of those convicted is expected to take place | :07:13. | :07:16.
Tom Ingall, BBC Look North, Sheffield. | :07:17. | :07:21.
Headteachers in Yorkshire are warning that schools are facing | :07:22. | :07:23.
huge cuts to their budgets, even though the government | :07:24. | :07:26.
A consultation closes today on a new funding formula, | :07:27. | :07:31.
which ministers say will distribute money in a fairer way | :07:32. | :07:34.
Spending on Yorkshire schools will increase by nearly | :07:35. | :07:40.
?30 million a year but, as Dave Edwards reports, teachers | :07:41. | :07:43.
Across the region schools are struggling to make the sums add up. | :07:44. | :07:52.
York high school is one of the winners under the government's | :07:53. | :07:59.
It'll get about ?120,000 a year more, but that's | :08:00. | :08:03.
There are more young people in school than there | :08:04. | :08:07.
The costs of salaries and so on are higher | :08:08. | :08:12.
than they've ever been before, so in real terms, a school like mine | :08:13. | :08:16.
facing a court of between eight and 9% year on year, | :08:17. | :08:18.
Here are just some of the things that Yorkshire schools have | :08:19. | :08:22.
told me they have done or are considering | :08:23. | :08:24.
Cutting jobs, increasing class sizes, asking parents to give money, | :08:25. | :08:30.
shortening the school day or even introducing a four-day week. | :08:31. | :08:36.
What type of character is he going to be? | :08:37. | :08:39.
One part of the problem is that schools are having to pay more | :08:40. | :08:42.
than ever for teachers' pensions and National Insurance out | :08:43. | :08:45.
But another part of the problem is, in a sense, our fault. | :08:46. | :08:50.
The increase we've seen throughout the 2000s is due quite largely | :08:51. | :08:56.
So, women that were born in the 1960s and 1970s are having | :08:57. | :09:03.
Where as in the past they would have been having those | :09:04. | :09:09.
The government says schools are receiving more money than ever | :09:10. | :09:13.
and the new formula will end inconsistencies between different | :09:14. | :09:15.
But it doesn't matter how you divide up the cash, | :09:16. | :09:20.
if, as teachers say, there isn't enough | :09:21. | :09:21.
After dark day, thank goodness there is some good news with the weather. | :09:22. | :09:40.
Increasingly sunny after what could be a cloudy, damp start. It will be | :09:41. | :09:46.
windy as well. Low pressure in charge at the moment but a build of | :09:47. | :09:51.
high pressure tomorrow and through the weekend. The sunshine will be | :09:52. | :09:58.
pretty warm during Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. | :09:59. | :10:02.
Chance of a bit of frost by night. Rain across northern areas. The | :10:03. | :10:05.
weather front that brought the rain today will be pushed back westwards | :10:06. | :10:09.
and we will be left with the odd spot of brain towards dawn with | :10:10. | :10:13.
temperatures down to four or 5 degrees. Thursday, damp in places | :10:14. | :10:18.
with an overhang of cloud but the cloud breaks up quickly and it will | :10:19. | :10:25.
be sunny into Thursday afternoon with very little in the wake of | :10:26. | :10:30.
cloud. A windy day, especially along the coast, top temperatures coming | :10:31. | :10:40.
in at 11 or 12 degrees. A fine and sunny end to Thursday, Thursday | :10:41. | :10:44.
night looks dry and clear. Might be patchy, low cloud towards the end of | :10:45. | :10:50.
the night and first like Friday morning, but that will clear and | :10:51. | :10:54.
Friday looks lovely day as the Saturday and Sunday. Some strong, | :10:55. | :10:59.
Spring sunshine with Frost at night. That is it, I will leave you with | :11:00. | :11:01.
the summary of tomorrow's | :11:02. | :11:03. |
