the war interpreter from Afghanistan seeking asylum in Birmingham. | :00:08. | :00:12.
If the UK Government are not able to take the responsibilities | :00:13. | :00:18.
for those people who worked, who served for them in Afghanistan, | :00:19. | :00:22.
why do you send your troops to Afghanistan? | :00:23. | :00:24.

An Afghan interpreter who served with British forces | :01:05. | :01:21.
says the Government has committed a great injustice by not | :01:22. | :01:23.
Javed Hotak, who's living illegally in the Midlands, | :01:24. | :01:28.
says he's received death threats from the Taliban, and fears | :01:29. | :01:30.
for his life if the Home Office send him back to Afghanistan. | :01:31. | :01:34.
Last year, another war translator living in West Bromwich, | :01:35. | :01:36.
apparently killed himself rather than face deportation. | :01:37. | :01:38.
Audrey Dias has this exclusive report. | :01:39. | :01:45.
Now I feel ashamed and I regret my time with them. | :01:46. | :01:54.
This was not the life that Javed Hotak imagined after spending | :01:55. | :01:57.
two years fighting alongside British Armed Forces in Afghanistan. | :01:58. | :02:02.
I was working as a soldier and interpreter as well | :02:03. | :02:05.
Javed also worked for the Afghan special narcotics force, disrupting | :02:06. | :02:15.
His reward - death threats from the Taliban. | :02:16. | :02:21.
So he fled to Britain in 2008, hoping to find asylum in return | :02:22. | :02:25.
Javed handed in the death threats he received from the Taliban | :02:26. | :02:30.
In this one, for example, it says, "you will be in hell very soon." | :02:31. | :02:38.
Here, they accuse him of being a "spy for the Crusaders" | :02:39. | :02:41.
and sentence him and his family to the death penalty. | :02:42. | :02:44.
Now, the Home Office refused to accept that these letters | :02:45. | :02:48.
were genuine and they turned down his claim for asylum. | :02:49. | :02:51.
Last week, the Commons Defence Select Committee heard | :02:52. | :02:53.
The perception all over the country for them is that they have | :02:54. | :03:00.
served the infidel forces, they are the eyes and ears | :03:01. | :03:02.
Something dreadful will happen and we have no | :03:03. | :03:05.
Now, if he is sent back, that would be an appalling act | :03:06. | :03:11.
by our government and there would be one person to blame, | :03:12. | :03:13.
that would be the ministers of the Crown and government | :03:14. | :03:17.
in what is I think and act that is as shameful | :03:18. | :03:19.
as any I can remember the British government taking. | :03:20. | :03:22.
We have referred to the fact that all these other foreign governments | :03:23. | :03:24.
have changed their opinion, they have lifted their interpreters | :03:25. | :03:27.
out of Afghanistan and giving them leave to remain. | :03:28. | :03:30.
Javed is making a renewed asylum application later this month | :03:31. | :03:33.
I think it is really unimaginable to put yourself | :03:34. | :03:38.
in a position like him, freeing really lead down | :03:39. | :03:49.
in a position like him, being let down | :03:50. | :03:51.
by government after working in the most dangerous circumstances. | :03:52. | :03:53.
For now he finds himself working illegally in the West Midlands, | :03:54. | :03:55.
relying on friends for a roof over his head. | :03:56. | :03:58.
If you can't take the responsibility, | :03:59. | :04:02.
don't send your troops, maybe for work somebody else, | :04:03. | :04:04.
don't send your troops, maybe we work somebody else, | :04:05. | :04:06.
Audrey Dias, BBC Midlands Today, Birmingham. | :04:07. | :04:09.
In a statement the Home Office said, "all asylum cases are carefully | :04:10. | :04:12.
considered on their individual merits and based on evidence | :04:13. | :04:15.
Joining me now is Professor Scott Lucas from the University of | :04:16. | :04:18.
How vital is the role of interpreter? | :04:19. | :04:26.
Oh, these interpreters have been essential to British forces, | :04:27. | :04:34.
American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan for more than a decade. | :04:35. | :04:38.
But only do you need them to be able to communicate with local units, but | :04:39. | :04:42.
if you are going to get hearts and minds of the villagers, you need | :04:43. | :04:45.
someone there who translates in many different managers used. What might | :04:46. | :04:49.
be the risk if he did return to Afghanistan? The Taliban have a | :04:50. | :04:54.
record of threatening people who have worked with the American and | :04:55. | :04:59.
British forces, sending out letters. Javed Hotek claims he has received | :05:00. | :05:03.
these. The Home Office still do not believe him. What happens with | :05:04. | :05:08.
interpreters in other countries, in America for example? In America they | :05:09. | :05:13.
make special cases especially for Iraq interpreters. The cause of | :05:14. | :05:17.
issues over immigration, these rules are tightening and is not guaranteed | :05:18. | :05:22.
that interpreters will continue to receive this type of treatment. So, | :05:23. | :05:27.
to say it is complex is an understatement, isn't it? It is | :05:28. | :05:32.
complex. The important thing here is the niece to be transparency full | :05:33. | :05:34.
stop Home Office are saying he does not have leave to remain. Let it be | :05:35. | :05:40.
clear, that there is a threat to him if he goes back to Afghanistan. We | :05:41. | :05:42.
appreciate your time thinking. And you've been reacting to this | :05:43. | :05:45.
on our Facebook page. Julie Rathbone says, | :05:46. | :05:47.
"This is the sort of person who should undoubtedly be allowed | :05:48. | :05:51.
to stay in our country.' Norma Robinson wrote, | :05:52. | :05:54.
"He is a hero too and put himself The pressure on the number | :05:55. | :06:20.
of hospital beds is well known, but now doctors in Birmingham | :06:21. | :06:24.
are piloting a scheme Some patients will be sent home | :06:25. | :06:26.
immediately after stem-cell They usually have to spend around | :06:27. | :06:30.
two weeks in hospital. Specialists also hope this | :06:31. | :06:34.
could cut down on infections. Here's our Health Correspondent, | :06:35. | :06:37.
Michele Paduano. So, we are probably about ten | :06:38. | :06:42.
minutes away from starting. John Wyartt had high dose | :06:43. | :06:46.
chemotherapy yesterday to destroy his blood cancer, | :06:47. | :06:48.
but it's brutal and also His own stem cells were | :06:49. | :06:51.
frozen before treatment. They are now being thawed | :06:52. | :06:58.
and put back into his body. These are gel packs | :06:59. | :07:00.
and they have been pre-warmed And these will help | :07:01. | :07:03.
with the thawing process. Patients normally spend two weeks | :07:04. | :07:06.
in hospital, but tonight, She has been cleaning the house | :07:07. | :07:08.
for the last week solid and yes, the place has got antibacterial | :07:09. | :07:19.
wipes everywhere and just every room has got them in and washes | :07:20. | :07:21.
for your hands and it's Hey Ho, it's or for | :07:22. | :07:24.
the best, isn't it? Patients are prone to infection | :07:25. | :07:29.
and it can be fatal, but this small pilot study wants | :07:30. | :07:31.
to see if some can be They stay in their own environment, | :07:32. | :07:34.
they try to stay away from the hospital acquired | :07:35. | :07:42.

that hospital food is not great, but it is something that | :07:46. | :07:48.
when they have such an intensive This unit has 25 beds and serves | :07:49. | :07:51.
a population of 1.4 million. There is always pressure on NHS | :07:52. | :07:55.

and just generally relax. It's better for John, | :08:14. | :08:18.
but more pressure for his wife? Yeah, I do feel a sense | :08:19. | :08:20.
of responsibility, it has to be said, being completely honest, | :08:21. | :08:24.
but I think overall I think it is definitely, I do probably | :08:25. | :08:28.
prefer it because I know that it's But John is hoping for a cure | :08:29. | :08:32.
that will keep him out Two West Midlands Police officers | :08:33. | :08:45.

paid a private visit to the Alexandra Hospital | :09:45. | :09:47.
in Redditch this afternoon. The Department of Health has refused | :09:48. | :09:51.
to confirm the details, but it's believed he met | :09:52. | :09:54.
with senior staff. His visit comes just days | :09:55. | :09:56.
after a whistle-blower claimed staff at the hospital had been | :09:57. | :09:59.
transferring patients to a nonexistent ward, | :10:00. | :10:02.
on paper, to make it look as if they were meeting | :10:03. | :10:05.
Government targets. Charities supporting vulnerable | :10:06. | :10:11.
people in Birmingham staged a huge protest this afternoon, | :10:12. | :10:14.
over the threat of proposed funding cuts to services | :10:15. | :10:16.
which support some of the city's Birmingham City Council says it | :10:17. | :10:19.
needs to save ?170 million over the next four years - | :10:20. | :10:24.
it says the Government Our reporter Amy Cole is outside | :10:25. | :10:27.
the City Council offices. What have the charities | :10:28. | :10:31.
been telling you? They are deeply upset | :10:32. | :10:36.
by the proposed cuts. "Save Our Support" was their | :10:37. | :10:39.
rallying cry their rallying They're concerned that carers, | :10:40. | :10:41.
victims of domestic abuse, the homeless and people | :10:42. | :10:46.
with disabilities The city council is proposing | :10:47. | :10:49.
to spend ?3.2 million on its 'supporting people budget' | :10:50. | :10:56.
in the new financial year but charities says it's not enough | :10:57. | :10:58.
and is a false economy because in the long run it | :10:59. | :11:01.
could lead to more people becoming They're going to have to pay more | :11:02. | :11:04.
if they make these cuts. They will pay more in their | :11:05. | :11:12.
homelessness applications, in their anti-social behaviour, | :11:13. | :11:13.
in their policing, in the care costs, residential care costs, | :11:14. | :11:16.
you know, we have clearly articulated to the council that this | :11:17. | :11:18.
makes no economic sense and so we really cannot understand | :11:19. | :11:23.
why the council is wanting to go ahead with the cuts, | :11:24. | :11:26.
albeit that they have reduced it The City Council has had | :11:27. | :11:29.
a public consultation, The council says it engaged | :11:30. | :11:38.
with around 100,000 people and following the consultation it | :11:39. | :11:43.
made some changes which includes scrapping the cuts it was going | :11:44. | :11:47.
to make to Birmingham's museums and reducing the amount | :11:48. | :11:50.
it was planning to cut for Parks. But while the charities blame | :11:51. | :11:56.
the Council for not supporting them, the council is blaming | :11:57. | :12:02.
the government for not I totally accept that people | :12:03. | :12:04.
will continue, quite rightly, to make their voices heard | :12:05. | :12:08.
about the fact that local councils are having to cut considerably | :12:09. | :12:11.
back on social care. Yes, we believe that we have done | :12:12. | :12:17.
some considerable movement in terms of the latter of those cuts | :12:18. | :12:22.
but the reality is that these are not cuts that are decided | :12:23. | :12:26.
here in council house, where people will be protesting, | :12:27. | :12:28.
these are decisions that are made in number ten and and number 11 | :12:29. | :12:31.
Downing St. The proposed budget will be | :12:32. | :12:36.
taken to a full council It's worth just mentioning | :12:37. | :12:51.
that the City Council has announced today that it's planning to invest | :12:52. | :12:54.

A rescue dog is getting the ultimate Valentine's present today. | :15:57. | :15:58.
Molly, the terrier cross has undergone heart surgery after more | :15:59. | :16:02.
?3000 was raised to pay for the operation. | :16:03. | :16:04.
Trish Adudu has spent the day with Molly in Solihull | :16:05. | :16:06.
and joins us now, Trish - how is she? | :16:07. | :16:12.
She is looking pretty well! She is indeed. We are here in intensive | :16:13. | :16:19.
care at the Willows that very centre in Solihull. She is a little bit | :16:20. | :16:24.
groggy, which is understandable because she has had a very long | :16:25. | :16:27.
operation but she has got her favourite teddy bear with her, which | :16:28. | :16:31.
has been with her since she has been a rescue dog. We will speak to Chris | :16:32. | :16:36.
and get the latest on her. They say Valentine's Day is a day of emotion. | :16:37. | :16:40.
It has been a real roller-coaster of emotions here today, it really has. | :16:41. | :16:46.
It's D-Day on Valentine's Day for Molly the cross terrier | :16:47. | :16:49.
here at Willows Veterinary Centre in Solihull. | :16:50. | :16:50.
The 5-year-old is preparing to have an important operation that | :16:51. | :16:53.
Abandoned and neglected, Molly arrived at the Coventry branch | :16:54. | :16:57.
of the RSPCA one year ago, underweight with hair loss | :16:58. | :16:59.
It was whilst treating this that that's discovered that she had | :17:00. | :17:08.
It was whilst treating this that vets discovered that she had | :17:09. | :17:11.
a third-degree heart block that threaten to shorten her life. | :17:12. | :17:13.
But after Molly's story went viral, people across the Midlands raised | :17:14. | :17:16.
the ?3000 to pay for her private operation in just three hours. | :17:17. | :17:19.
It was quite incredible, you know, the support that we have had | :17:20. | :17:21.
and we are extremely grateful for it because it's helping give Molly | :17:22. | :17:24.
I think it's really, really important for a nice little | :17:25. | :17:28.
animal like that to be loved and looked after and hopefully | :17:29. | :17:31.
she'll get a nice home at the end of it and so will all the dogs here. | :17:32. | :17:35.
So, it's just under one hour to go before the operation and Molly's | :17:36. | :17:38.
here with her lucky teddy, a teddy that's followed | :17:39. | :17:42.
her throughout her life as an abandoned rescue dog. | :17:43. | :17:46.
About 20 operations like this happen every year but it | :17:47. | :17:50.
This afternoon we will be placing a pacemaker for Molly. | :17:51. | :17:56.
It is a fairly straightforward procedure but there are some | :17:57. | :18:00.
convocations that we can encounter during the operation. | :18:01. | :18:01.
We see a lot of patients come through. | :18:02. | :18:05.
Molly has got a great character in her. | :18:06. | :18:07.
It is a two-hour operation with two surgeons and a team to fit | :18:08. | :18:11.
a pacemaker to permanently regulate Molly's heartbeat. | :18:12. | :18:13.
It's just over an hour gone in the operation and so far | :18:14. | :18:16.
Here's hoping to a happy Valentine's ending for Molly. | :18:17. | :18:31.
Let's get the very latest on Molly's condition. The head of cardiology | :18:32. | :18:38.
here, how is she doing? She's doing great. She came through the surgery | :18:39. | :18:42.
really well stop she had great surgery. Everything went according | :18:43. | :18:46.
to plan in the end. We had a few cup occasions as I mentioned earlier but | :18:47. | :18:51.
everything has worked out well. Her heart is beating about four times | :18:52. | :18:58.
faster. She is doing great. Will she make a full recovery? We expect her | :18:59. | :19:02.
to make a full recovery. Surgery was about two hours, so shooters waking | :19:03. | :19:05.
up from the anaesthetic that by this evening she will be up on her feet | :19:06. | :19:09.
and ready to go. -- Sochi is just waking up. There are dozens of | :19:10. | :19:15.
people standing by to give Molly a new home and all the staff here have | :19:16. | :19:21.
been buzzing since she came out. You are all happy, aren't you? Yes! And | :19:22. | :19:28.
Molly is, too. It has been an amazing journey and it wasn't for | :19:29. | :19:31.
the fundraisers who made it happen, it wouldn't have happened, would it? | :19:32. | :19:35.
These operations are not to be taken lightly, there are financial in with | :19:36. | :19:39.
them and it is a big operation for the dogs, too. She has done smashing | :19:40. | :19:43.
and a great job raising the money for her. Back to you, Mary. I know | :19:44. | :19:48.
where I will be tonight. Hot warming stuff stop difficult to tell who is | :19:49. | :19:51.
the dog and who is the Teddy! Racegoers at next month's | :19:52. | :19:55.
Cheltenham Festival will face restrictions on the number | :19:56. | :19:57.

a maximum of four drinks at a time and there will be water points | :19:59. | :20:03.

at The Jockey Club's other courses, including Aintree and Epsom | :20:07. | :20:09.

in our late bulletin at 10.30pm. Last year's surprise package | :20:18. | :20:21.
at Wimbledon, Marcus Willis, has been in action in Shrewsbury | :20:22. | :20:23.
today, as he tries to make his way The 26-year-old from Warwick | :20:24. | :20:27.
is playing in the Aegon Pro Series. And he's through to the second | :20:28. | :20:34.
round after beating Ronan Joncour of France in straight | :20:35. | :20:37.
sets, 6-2 6-4. Unlike Wimbledon, there | :20:38. | :20:39.
are no queues to get in. Just a polite notice to say | :20:40. | :20:43.
spectators are welcome. But the Shrewsbury club hosted | :20:44. | :20:49.
a star Wimbledon 2016 today. Marcus Willis was today's | :20:50. | :20:53.
main attraction at the It was a very, very big story | :20:54. | :20:55.
and I've got a lot of support, which is awesome, but ultimately | :20:56. | :21:05.
I have got to go out there and win tennis matches and I want to make | :21:06. | :21:08.
Wimbledon more frequent, At Wimbledon last year, | :21:09. | :21:11.
ranked 772 in the world, Willis created headlines by coming | :21:12. | :21:17.
through qualifying to play Today, his wife Jenny | :21:18. | :21:23.
was watching on. They're expecting a baby daughter | :21:24. | :21:36.
in four weeks' time. That drives me more | :21:37. | :21:39.
and I think through the year I've got a lot of belief in myself, | :21:40. | :21:43.
you know, this leave my wife I have a great group of people | :21:44. | :21:48.
around me supporting me, so in that sense I'm happy | :21:49. | :21:52.
and of course, I have At this level of tennis, every pound | :21:53. | :21:55.
of prize-money is hard earned. This is the other side of tennis, | :21:56. | :22:02.
far from Wimbledon. The total prize money | :22:03. | :22:07.
this week is $15,000. 26-year-old Willis was always | :22:08. | :22:10.
in control of today's match This wasn't Wimbledon but a small | :22:11. | :22:18.
step in the right direction. Dan Pallett, BBC Midlands | :22:19. | :22:30.
Today, Shrewsbury. Hopefully we will see him at the | :22:31. | :22:39.
championships again this year. February 14th - an opportunity | :22:40. | :22:42.
for florists and restaurants to boost profits or the chance | :22:43. | :22:44.
to tell someone how Whichever way you look at it, | :22:45. | :22:46.
New Street Station probably wouldn't be most people's idea | :22:47. | :22:50.
of a romantic venue. But that's where more | :22:51. | :22:53.
than 30 couples gathered to renew their wedding vows, | :22:54. | :22:56.
in a ceremony organised Joan Cummins was also | :22:57. | :22:58.
there, reporting. They came with family, | :22:59. | :23:04.
they came dressed in their finest, but without exception, | :23:05. | :23:06.
they made the journey to New Street Station with love | :23:07. | :23:09.
in their hearts prepared to promise The first time we got married | :23:10. | :23:13.
it was like more arranged. After 22 years, we | :23:14. | :23:20.
are actually in love. Ken and Irene tied | :23:21. | :23:22.
the knot 50 years ago. Five row-free decades later, | :23:23. | :23:28.
the couple couldn't resist declaring their continuing love | :23:29. | :23:32.
for each other. We tell each other every day | :23:33. | :23:35.
that we love each other, Don't be ashamed, don't be afraid, | :23:36. | :23:38.
just say it and mean it. Organised by BBC Radio | :23:39. | :23:45.
West Midlands, the true romantics at heart gathered | :23:46. | :23:52.
and re-dedicated their wedding vows. It is not only marrying | :23:53. | :23:57.
the right partner, I think I've fallen | :23:58. | :23:59.
in love with her more now We've just grown up together | :24:00. | :24:06.
and nothing's change, really. We never fall out, never had | :24:07. | :24:10.
an argument in 60 years. Just simple, having a laugh I think | :24:11. | :24:15.
is the best way to get it. Couldn't think of being | :24:16. | :24:23.
with anybody else. And for those of you who didn't find | :24:24. | :24:31.
love this year, don't worry, Joan Cummins, BBC | :24:32. | :24:38.
Midlands Today, Birmingham. She's finally found a job that suits | :24:39. | :24:53.
her! Now, five decades without a row? Are we believing that? I am not | :24:54. | :24:55.
sure! Not much love for the weather - | :24:56. | :24:56.
we're hoping for the grey skies to lift, what are the chances | :24:57. | :24:59.
Shefali? Loving the colour of your dress! | :25:00. | :25:08.
Like a lot of relationships, it started off well but slowly | :25:09. | :25:11.
deteriorated! Lovely photograph from one of our Weather Watchers. You can | :25:12. | :25:15.
see, it is a love heart. We had quite a bit of cloud developing | :25:16. | :25:21.
through the day the stop it was moving from the south-west. A bit of | :25:22. | :25:25.
mist as well there and that is a trend that continues as the week | :25:26. | :25:29.
goes on. We take a look at it from our pressure chart point of view. We | :25:30. | :25:33.
have clear skies at the moment. There is this system pushing in from | :25:34. | :25:37.
the south-west and then we have a respite on Thursday before we see | :25:38. | :25:40.
the next band of rain starting to move in from the west. At it will be | :25:41. | :25:44.
a lot milder later this week. From tomorrow onwards, that is because | :25:45. | :25:48.
the winds are becoming southerly and south-westerly. A bit of rain on the | :25:49. | :25:54.
cards at least for the far east. Cloudy with some rain on the next | :25:55. | :25:59.
few days. Then a bit of rightness poking through for Thursday. Dry | :26:00. | :26:04.
weather for a time, too. Mild and murky, that Merck and mixture of | :26:05. | :26:10.
mist and fog patches. We seeing that through this evening and tonight. We | :26:11. | :26:16.
have this front from the south-west bringing some polite and patchy | :26:17. | :26:20.
rain. That will clear away leaving a trail of cloud, mist and fog | :26:21. | :26:24.
patches, particularly in the rural valleys where we have a lot of | :26:25. | :26:28.
moisture. The temperatures, six or seven Celsius, much milder than last | :26:29. | :26:33.
night. No question of frost. Misty, murky, foggy tomorrow morning. That | :26:34. | :26:38.
will start to slowly clear but some places it may linger. More cloud | :26:39. | :26:43.
pushing from the south-west and that will bring in some rain, heavy in | :26:44. | :26:48.
places, particularly in the eastern half of the region. Tebbutt is into | :26:49. | :26:52.
double figures in many places. Up to 10 Celsius with southerly winds. -- | :26:53. | :26:57.
temperatures into double figures. There could be a touch of frost in | :26:58. | :26:59.
the south-west. Thank you. On tomorrow's programme | :27:00. | :27:02.
we'll be on the trail of a nationally important fossil | :27:03. | :27:04.
collectiong from Staffordshire. Biddulph Grange Geological Gallery | :27:05. | :27:06.
had been neglected for years, but a project to restore | :27:07. | :27:08.
it is gathering pace. We'll see how collections | :27:09. | :27:10.
from different museums around the country are helping bring this | :27:11. | :27:12.
historical project up to date The originals of these | :27:13. | :27:16.
fossils were collected in the 1800s and so we know | :27:17. | :27:18.
that they are from the right sort of site, they were found | :27:19. | :27:21.
about the right sort of time for Bateman using similar fossils | :27:22. | :27:24.
and there's then the scientific accuracy that this is from a very | :27:25. | :27:26.
particular rock deposit. # I knew you were trouble | :27:27. | :27:33.
when you walked in # Now I'm lying | :27:34. | :28:19.
on the cold, hard ground | :28:20. | :28:23. |
