Death threats from the Taliban and fearing for his life -

:00:00.:00:07.

the war interpreter from Afghanistan seeking asylum in Birmingham.

:00:08.:00:12.

If the UK Government are not able to take the responsibilities

:00:13.:00:18.

for those people who worked, who served for them in Afghanistan,

:00:19.:00:22.

why do you send your troops to Afghanistan?

:00:23.:00:24.

Javed Hotak served with the British forces and is facing deportation.

:00:25.:00:28.

Easing the pressure on hospital beds - the Leukaemia patients

:00:29.:00:32.

being sent home immediately after stem-cell treatment.

:00:33.:00:36.

It's just so nice to be able to sleep, go to your own bed,

:00:37.:00:40.

watch your own telly and just generally relax.

:00:41.:00:45.

Mending Molly's heart on Valentine's day -

:00:46.:00:47.

the rescue dog having a pacemaker fitted thanks to public donations.

:00:48.:00:51.

A long way from Wimbledon - Marcus Willis on his fight to climb

:00:52.:00:55.

And from the tomorrow the cold gradually eases.

:00:56.:01:00.

Foggy starts but milder days ahead with a little rain for the farmers.

:01:01.:01:04.

An Afghan interpreter who served with British forces

:01:05.:01:21.

says the Government has committed a great injustice by not

:01:22.:01:23.

Javed Hotak, who's living illegally in the Midlands,

:01:24.:01:28.

says he's received death threats from the Taliban, and fears

:01:29.:01:30.

for his life if the Home Office send him back to Afghanistan.

:01:31.:01:34.

Last year, another war translator living in West Bromwich,

:01:35.:01:36.

apparently killed himself rather than face deportation.

:01:37.:01:38.

Audrey Dias has this exclusive report.

:01:39.:01:45.

Now I feel ashamed and I regret my time with them.

:01:46.:01:54.

This was not the life that Javed Hotak imagined after spending

:01:55.:01:57.

two years fighting alongside British Armed Forces in Afghanistan.

:01:58.:02:02.

I was working as a soldier and interpreter as well

:02:03.:02:05.

Javed also worked for the Afghan special narcotics force, disrupting

:02:06.:02:15.

His reward - death threats from the Taliban.

:02:16.:02:21.

So he fled to Britain in 2008, hoping to find asylum in return

:02:22.:02:25.

Javed handed in the death threats he received from the Taliban

:02:26.:02:30.

In this one, for example, it says, "you will be in hell very soon."

:02:31.:02:38.

Here, they accuse him of being a "spy for the Crusaders"

:02:39.:02:41.

and sentence him and his family to the death penalty.

:02:42.:02:44.

Now, the Home Office refused to accept that these letters

:02:45.:02:48.

were genuine and they turned down his claim for asylum.

:02:49.:02:51.

Last week, the Commons Defence Select Committee heard

:02:52.:02:53.

The perception all over the country for them is that they have

:02:54.:03:00.

served the infidel forces, they are the eyes and ears

:03:01.:03:02.

Something dreadful will happen and we have no

:03:03.:03:05.

Now, if he is sent back, that would be an appalling act

:03:06.:03:11.

by our government and there would be one person to blame,

:03:12.:03:13.

that would be the ministers of the Crown and government

:03:14.:03:17.

in what is I think and act that is as shameful

:03:18.:03:19.

as any I can remember the British government taking.

:03:20.:03:22.

We have referred to the fact that all these other foreign governments

:03:23.:03:24.

have changed their opinion, they have lifted their interpreters

:03:25.:03:27.

out of Afghanistan and giving them leave to remain.

:03:28.:03:30.

Javed is making a renewed asylum application later this month

:03:31.:03:33.

I think it is really unimaginable to put yourself

:03:34.:03:38.

in a position like him, freeing really lead down

:03:39.:03:49.

in a position like him, being let down

:03:50.:03:51.

by government after working in the most dangerous circumstances.

:03:52.:03:53.

For now he finds himself working illegally in the West Midlands,

:03:54.:03:55.

relying on friends for a roof over his head.

:03:56.:03:58.

If you can't take the responsibility,

:03:59.:04:02.

don't send your troops, maybe for work somebody else,

:04:03.:04:04.

don't send your troops, maybe we work somebody else,

:04:05.:04:06.

Audrey Dias, BBC Midlands Today, Birmingham.

:04:07.:04:09.

In a statement the Home Office said, "all asylum cases are carefully

:04:10.:04:12.

considered on their individual merits and based on evidence

:04:13.:04:15.

Joining me now is Professor Scott Lucas from the University of

:04:16.:04:18.

How vital is the role of interpreter?

:04:19.:04:26.

Oh, these interpreters have been essential to British forces,

:04:27.:04:34.

American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan for more than a decade.

:04:35.:04:38.

But only do you need them to be able to communicate with local units, but

:04:39.:04:42.

if you are going to get hearts and minds of the villagers, you need

:04:43.:04:45.

someone there who translates in many different managers used. What might

:04:46.:04:49.

be the risk if he did return to Afghanistan? The Taliban have a

:04:50.:04:54.

record of threatening people who have worked with the American and

:04:55.:04:59.

British forces, sending out letters. Javed Hotek claims he has received

:05:00.:05:03.

these. The Home Office still do not believe him. What happens with

:05:04.:05:08.

interpreters in other countries, in America for example? In America they

:05:09.:05:13.

make special cases especially for Iraq interpreters. The cause of

:05:14.:05:17.

issues over immigration, these rules are tightening and is not guaranteed

:05:18.:05:22.

that interpreters will continue to receive this type of treatment. So,

:05:23.:05:27.

to say it is complex is an understatement, isn't it? It is

:05:28.:05:32.

complex. The important thing here is the niece to be transparency full

:05:33.:05:34.

stop Home Office are saying he does not have leave to remain. Let it be

:05:35.:05:40.

clear, that there is a threat to him if he goes back to Afghanistan. We

:05:41.:05:42.

appreciate your time thinking. And you've been reacting to this

:05:43.:05:45.

on our Facebook page. Julie Rathbone says,

:05:46.:05:47.

"This is the sort of person who should undoubtedly be allowed

:05:48.:05:51.

to stay in our country.' Norma Robinson wrote,

:05:52.:05:54.

by the proposed cuts. "Save Our Support" was their

you know, we have clearly articulated to the council that this

I know this is a story many of you will have been waiting for today.

A rescue dog is getting the ultimate Valentine's present today.

Molly, the terrier cross has undergone heart surgery after more

:15:59.:16:02.

?3000 was raised to pay for the operation.

:16:03.:16:04.

Trish Adudu has spent the day with Molly in Solihull

:16:05.:16:06.

and joins us now, Trish - how is she?

:16:07.:16:12.

She is looking pretty well! She is indeed. We are here in intensive

:16:13.:16:19.

care at the Willows that very centre in Solihull. She is a little bit

:16:20.:16:24.

groggy, which is understandable because she has had a very long

:16:25.:16:27.

operation but she has got her favourite teddy bear with her, which

:16:28.:16:31.

has been with her since she has been a rescue dog. We will speak to Chris

:16:32.:16:36.

and get the latest on her. They say Valentine's Day is a day of emotion.

:16:37.:16:40.

It has been a real roller-coaster of emotions here today, it really has.

:16:41.:16:46.

It's D-Day on Valentine's Day for Molly the cross terrier

:16:47.:16:49.

here at Willows Veterinary Centre in Solihull.

:16:50.:16:50.

The 5-year-old is preparing to have an important operation that

:16:51.:16:53.

Abandoned and neglected, Molly arrived at the Coventry branch

:16:54.:16:57.

of the RSPCA one year ago, underweight with hair loss

:16:58.:16:59.

It was whilst treating this that that's discovered that she had

:17:00.:17:08.

It was whilst treating this that vets discovered that she had

:17:09.:17:11.

a third-degree heart block that threaten to shorten her life.

:17:12.:17:13.

But after Molly's story went viral, people across the Midlands raised

:17:14.:17:16.

the ?3000 to pay for her private operation in just three hours.

:17:17.:17:19.

It was quite incredible, you know, the support that we have had

:17:20.:17:21.

and we are extremely grateful for it because it's helping give Molly

:17:22.:17:24.

I think it's really, really important for a nice little

:17:25.:17:28.

animal like that to be loved and looked after and hopefully

:17:29.:17:31.

she'll get a nice home at the end of it and so will all the dogs here.

:17:32.:17:35.

So, it's just under one hour to go before the operation and Molly's

:17:36.:17:38.

here with her lucky teddy, a teddy that's followed

:17:39.:17:42.

her throughout her life as an abandoned rescue dog.

:17:43.:17:46.

About 20 operations like this happen every year but it

:17:47.:17:50.

This afternoon we will be placing a pacemaker for Molly.

:17:51.:17:56.

It is a fairly straightforward procedure but there are some

:17:57.:18:00.

convocations that we can encounter during the operation.

:18:01.:18:01.

We see a lot of patients come through.

:18:02.:18:05.

Molly has got a great character in her.

:18:06.:18:07.

It is a two-hour operation with two surgeons and a team to fit

:18:08.:18:11.

a pacemaker to permanently regulate Molly's heartbeat.

:18:12.:18:13.

It's just over an hour gone in the operation and so far

:18:14.:18:16.

Here's hoping to a happy Valentine's ending for Molly.

:18:17.:18:31.

Let's get the very latest on Molly's condition. The head of cardiology

:18:32.:18:38.

here, how is she doing? She's doing great. She came through the surgery

:18:39.:18:42.

really well stop she had great surgery. Everything went according

:18:43.:18:46.

to plan in the end. We had a few cup occasions as I mentioned earlier but

:18:47.:18:51.

everything has worked out well. Her heart is beating about four times

:18:52.:18:58.

faster. She is doing great. Will she make a full recovery? We expect her

:18:59.:19:02.

to make a full recovery. Surgery was about two hours, so shooters waking

:19:03.:19:05.

up from the anaesthetic that by this evening she will be up on her feet

:19:06.:19:09.

and ready to go. -- Sochi is just waking up. There are dozens of

:19:10.:19:15.

people standing by to give Molly a new home and all the staff here have

:19:16.:19:21.

been buzzing since she came out. You are all happy, aren't you? Yes! And

:19:22.:19:28.

Molly is, too. It has been an amazing journey and it wasn't for

:19:29.:19:31.

the fundraisers who made it happen, it wouldn't have happened, would it?

:19:32.:19:35.
