An investigation's underway after an eight year old boy died

:00:10.:00:14.

just hours after being discharged from hospital.

:00:15.:00:15.

Health campaigners say it raises questions about safety. I can't help

:00:16.:00:22.

thinking my local hospital can't save my child if they really ill.

:00:23.:00:25.

We'll be speaking live to Worcestershire hospital's interim

It's, like, scary and exciting and, like, just... I get really hyped up

this would never happen Now, I just can't help thinking

if they're really, really ill. West Midlands Ambulance

Service arrived on scene Having done advanced life support,

:02:28.:02:30.

at 3:42pm, they left for Worcester. 23 minutes later, at

:02:31.:02:36.

4:05pm, they arrived. The Ambulance Service

:02:37.:02:37.

said it did everything Callum Cartlidge's family live just

was put in to bring him So paramedics spent

:02:48.:02:50.

23 minutes, at speed performing chest

:02:57.:02:59.

voiced his concerns that this If I had a child in cardiac arrest,

:03:00.:03:01.

I would want to get I wouldn't want to drive past

:03:16.:03:20.

at the Alexandra Hospital said the changes in Worcestershire

:03:21.:03:25.

did put lives at risk. There will be cases cropping up

:03:26.:03:29.

where there will be a question of whether the delay could have

:03:30.:03:32.

contributed to a problem, Sometimes, it might be the case,

:03:33.:03:34.

sometimes it might not be the case. But it does seem a pity

:03:35.:03:41.

to have the availability of an A department, and it doesn't

:03:42.:03:47.

take a lot more to be able to take children,

:03:48.:03:49.

if you like. And you need the services anyway,

:03:50.:03:51.

because there isn't enough capacity elsewhere, even

:03:52.:03:53.

for children's services. A postmortem is being carried out

:03:54.:03:54.

to find the cause of Callum's death. Michele Paduano, BBC

Mids Today, Redditch. Joining us now from the

:03:59.:04:07.

Worcestershire NHS Hospitals Trust is Chief Interim Medical Officer Dr.

:04:08.:04:17.

Andrew Short good evening. Such a tragic case, what can you

:04:18.:04:25.

tell us about what happened? The first thing I would like to say is

:04:26.:04:30.

any death of a child is a tragedy. My sincerest condolences go to the

:04:31.:04:32.

family and our thoughts are with them. And also with the members of

:04:33.:04:37.

our staff and other NHS staff who were involved in the events of last

:04:38.:04:44.

Friday. We know that Callum was being treated by his GP and he was

:04:45.:04:48.

referred into our services to be assessed on Thursday evening. He was

:04:49.:04:55.

seen by our trained children's nurses and doctors. He was observed

:04:56.:04:58.

for several hours and thought to be well enough to be discharged home on

:04:59.:05:04.

the Thursday evening. Tragically, on the Friday afternoon, a cardiac

:05:05.:05:10.

arrest call went out for the ambulance crew and rapid response

:05:11.:05:13.

team. They responded very quickly. They commenced resuscitation. They

:05:14.:05:23.

transferred Callum over to A where the full team of anaesthetists and

:05:24.:05:29.

consultants and paediatricians were on stand-by. Resuscitation continued

:05:30.:05:32.

but despite everyone's efforts, sadly, Callum didn't response. --

:05:33.:05:37.

didn't respond. The fact that he couldn't go to Redditch seems crazy,

:05:38.:05:44.

two minutes away. The evidence is very clear that what is important is

:05:45.:05:48.

that you get highly trained paramedics onto the scene to

:05:49.:05:51.

commenced resuscitation as soon as possible. You then need to take the

:05:52.:05:55.

patient to where they have the greatest chance of survival. That is

:05:56.:05:58.

the hospital where you have the expertise present on-site. As a

:05:59.:06:04.

result of staff shortages, we have made the decision to centralise

:06:05.:06:08.

paediatric services on the Worcestershire Royal site and we

:06:09.:06:10.

have done that in the interest the interest of our patients. To provide

:06:11.:06:16.

the safest possible care for them. Save the Alex campaigners and

:06:17.:06:20.

paramedics had warned last September that lives could be at risk under

:06:21.:06:24.

the new arrangements. Do you feel their worst fears have now been

:06:25.:06:30.

realised? I don't. It is absolutely wrong to link Callum Cartlidge's

:06:31.:06:35.

death to the centralisation of services. As with any unexpected

:06:36.:06:40.

death in children, there will be a full investigation. We will do an

:06:41.:06:44.

internal investigation. We have reported this death externally to

:06:45.:06:48.

the corner. When we find more information, we will share that with

:06:49.:06:51.

the family and make it clear to them exactly what has happened. Are there

:06:52.:06:56.

enough beds in Worcester for children? There are enough beds.

:06:57.:07:02.

That was absolutely nothing to do with the decision to send Callum

:07:03.:07:07.

home on Thursday evening. He was assessed in the assessment unit. Had

:07:08.:07:10.

he needed to have been admitted there were beds available. We have

:07:11.:07:13.

had beds available since the decision to centralise, in autumn

:07:14.:07:19.

last year. Thank you for talking to us.

:07:20.:07:25.

And there'll be more on this on BBC Hereford and Worcester's breakfast

:07:26.:07:28.

A "Walter Mitty character" who poisoned his wife with laxatives

:07:29.:07:34.

has been jailed for three and a half years.

:07:35.:07:37.

David Smith from Telford, who was described as a fantasist

:07:38.:07:40.

and claimed he was an ex-SAS hero, made Elizabeth Smith so ill

:07:41.:07:43.

Elizabeth Smith left court shaken, but satisfied.

:07:44.:07:55.

She had just seen her husband jailed.

:07:56.:07:58.

This man, David Smith, claimed to be an SAS war hero and a

:07:59.:08:01.

In reality, he was a poisoner, a liar and a thief.

:08:02.:08:10.

When I first met Dave, he was the kindest...

:08:11.:08:13.

They were married, but he lived in England.

:08:14.:08:18.

They saw each other every couple of weeks.

:08:19.:08:20.

The plan was to buy a place together, eventually.

:08:21.:08:24.

He told her he'd been in the SAS and involved in the siege

:08:25.:08:28.

He seemed loving and attentive, making spaghetti

:08:29.:08:31.

One day, while at work at her hairdressing business,

:08:32.:08:36.

I would be working away and chatting and all of a sudden I would feel

:08:37.:08:44.

really dizzy and think, "oh no, God", thinking it was my head.

:08:45.:08:47.

This will supposedly him with cancer.

:08:48.:08:57.

He was finally caught after faking a break-in at Elizabeth's home.

:08:58.:09:00.

Thousands of pounds of her money was found in his car.

:09:01.:09:03.

For me, there were no signs of anything.

:09:04.:09:06.

I mean, even about the SAS, and everything, that part

:09:07.:09:08.

of his life, the only time at one point I did say to him,

:09:09.:09:12.

"Dave, I haven't seen anything about your past"...

:09:13.:09:16.

On sentencing him to three and a half years in prison,

:09:17.:09:20.

Sheriff Montgomery told David Smith he'd embarked on a prolonged,

:09:21.:09:22.

That caused mental and physical anguish to his victim.

:09:23.:09:32.

Suzanne Allen, BBC Midlands Today, Ayr.

:09:33.:09:33.

A man accused of murdering his ex partner and hiding her body today

:09:34.:09:37.

told a jury he didn't kill the mother of his two children.

:09:38.:09:39.

Osmond Bell claimed he'd been assaulted and racially abused

:09:40.:09:42.

by the police when questioned about the killing in 1981.

:09:43.:09:45.

Nova Welsh was 24 years old when she went

:09:46.:09:47.

Her body was eventually discovered in a cupboard

:09:48.:09:50.

Her former partner said he felt broken and numb

:09:51.:09:54.

Police are treating the death of a man who fell

:09:55.:09:59.

from the window of a flat in Birmingham as unexplained.

:10:00.:10:01.

Emergency services were called to an address on the Stratford Road,

:10:02.:10:04.

in Sparkbrook, last night, but the man, who was in his 50s,

:10:05.:10:07.

Officers are examining CCTV footage and carrying out house-to-house

:10:08.:10:11.

enquiries to try to work out what happened.

:10:12.:10:24.

Investigation are underway after the recovery of a man's body

:10:25.:10:26.

Emergency services went to Spring Lane around seven-thirty

:10:27.:10:29.

after a passer-by reported seeing a body in the water.

:10:30.:10:32.

West Mercia Police are asking anyone who saw anything

:10:33.:10:34.

More than a dozen sheds have been destroyed by arsonists

:10:35.:10:38.

Police say they're planning extra patrols in the area after the spate

:10:39.:10:42.

of attacks on the Brownshill Green allotments in the Kersley

:10:43.:10:45.

Some people have started dismantling their sheds to avoid

:10:46.:10:49.

attacks and others say they're considering moving.

:10:50.:11:00.

You come up here, you, sort of, work for five years and get it

:11:01.:11:06.

for some idiots to come and do this is...

:11:07.:11:09.

Beggars, cyclists, buskers and street traders escaped

:11:10.:11:12.

an outright ban today, as Coventry City Council

:11:13.:11:14.

try to make the city centre a better place for shoppers.

:11:15.:11:16.

But they'll have to watch their step as officials can punish

:11:17.:11:19.

More than 300,000 people live in Coventry.

:11:20.:11:29.

Now, the city centre has become one of the first areas in the

:11:30.:11:32.

region to introduce a public spaces protection order, designed to

:11:33.:11:34.

encourage all of us to share the streets respectfully with each

:11:35.:11:37.

It's an answer to issues that residents and shoppers have raised

:11:38.:11:41.

with cyclists going too fast, skateboarders causing problems and

:11:42.:11:43.

making a lot of noise by residential properties within the ring road.

:11:44.:11:46.

Not leaving people alone, standing at car park payment machines,

:11:47.:12:00.

demanding money. Begging is already a punishable

:12:01.:12:02.

offence in the law but now The council say they'll ask people

:12:03.:12:05.

to move on and offer them help rather than fine them immediately

:12:06.:12:13.

but for some forced to beg it's I got a fine two weeks ago. I was in

:12:14.:12:27.

court. It's nothing new, really. Yeah, how much was that fine for? 30

:12:28.:12:34.

quid. I paid it that why they find me...

:12:35.:12:38.

Council officials and police will enforce the order

:12:39.:12:40.

which includes asking speeding cyclists and skateboarders to show

:12:41.:12:42.

consideration to those around them before they're issued with a fine

:12:43.:12:44.

but today there was a mixed response to the changes.

:12:45.:12:53.

If they are begging for food Wall a bit of money, how are they going to

:12:54.:12:59.

pay the fine? -- or a bit of money. They were back at fines. The council

:13:00.:13:03.

are trying to make the city a better place. The council say they don't

:13:04.:13:07.

want to criminalise people and say cyclists are welcome in the city

:13:08.:13:11.

centre but what they are asking for is a little bit of respect for all

:13:12.:13:12.

members of the community. Joan Cummins, BBC

:13:13.:13:17.

Midlands Today, Coventry. Well this has certainly got you

:13:18.:13:19.

talking on our facebook page today Yes, it's a pain being hassled

:13:20.:13:23.

for cash, but it's worse when you're starving and people turn their nose

:13:24.:13:28.

up because they think they're Rea Verdon asked "Will

:13:29.:13:31.

:13:32.:13:34.

out of town?" And Jacqueline Johnson points out

:13:35.:13:36.

that London licensed buskers many years ago and now the Underground

:13:37.:13:41.

is alive with talented Thanks to all of you for getting in

:13:42.:13:49.

touch, we always like to hear from you.

:13:50.:13:50.

Four people have been arrested in simultaneous raids in London this

:13:51.:13:52.

morning in connection with the supply of class A drugs

:13:53.:13:55.

The arrests, in Lewisham and Peckham, were part

:13:56.:13:58.

of an operation to target dangerous drugs networks working

:13:59.:14:00.

This is the culmination of a long investigation.

:14:01.:14:06.

30 police officers from Gloucestershire carry out

:14:07.:14:14.

simultaneous strikes on four buildings, to arrest four people

:14:15.:14:16.

they believe are heavily involved in supplying drugs into the county.

:14:17.:14:22.

Within minutes, all four targets are arrested,

:14:23.:14:25.

all on suspicion of supplying class A drugs.

:14:26.:14:31.

All, apart from one of them, are also suspected

:14:32.:14:33.

With suspects in custody, specialist search teams and scenes

:14:34.:14:42.

of crimes officers then moved in, looking in every nook

:14:43.:14:45.

At the moment, we've seized a quantity of cash

:14:46.:14:48.

various mobile phones, documentation regarding

:14:49.:14:49.

We will arrest them and we will search...

:14:50.:14:57.

These arrests were part of Operation Side Swipe,

:14:58.:14:59.

aimed at targeting so-called Dangerous Drugs Networks.

:15:00.:15:00.

Effectively, gangs who prey on vulnerable users

:15:01.:15:02.

They'll often take over someone's house to deal from,

:15:03.:15:05.

so called cuckooing, all under threat

:15:06.:15:07.

This is one of the most significant operations launched

:15:08.:15:11.

by Gloucestershire constabulary in recent years.

:15:12.:15:14.

It's the result of many months of gathering intelligence

:15:15.:15:16.

and analysing that intelligence and detectives say it

:15:17.:15:18.

proves their determination to show that Gloucestershire isn't an easy

:15:19.:15:20.

target for those who want to deal drugs, wherever they come from.

:15:21.:15:23.

These people think they can come in to Gloucester and commit

:15:24.:15:26.

the crimes they're doing, selling drugs to our

:15:27.:15:28.

young vulnerable people, and exploiting people,

:15:29.:15:29.

you know, there's a consequence in that.

:15:30.:15:34.

This is why it's important that we do take the fight back to them.

:15:35.:15:38.

So, we're not anonymous, they know who we are,

:15:39.:15:40.

and we look at arresting them and seizing their assets that

:15:41.:15:42.

are obtained through their criminal activity.

:15:43.:15:46.

All four arrested today are still in custody

:15:47.:15:48.

as the investigation into serious drug dealing in Gloucestershire

:15:49.:15:50.

continues in and away from the county.

:15:51.:15:53.

Thanks for joining us on Midlands Today.

:15:54.:16:02.

Another sunny day across the region and I'm getting to like it.

:16:03.:16:05.

Shefali here shortly with the forecast.

:16:06.:16:09.

Also in tonight's programme: We meet the Sky Blue's latest

:16:10.:16:13.

manager Mark Robbins, can he turn the tide

:16:14.:16:17.

And back on home turf as a rising star: 12-year-old Lewis

:16:18.:16:21.

from West Bromwich takes the lead in Billy Elliott the Musical.

:16:22.:16:28.

When you think of reducing air pollution, you probably think

:16:29.:16:30.

of electric cars and energy efficient light bulbs, but academics

:16:31.:16:33.

at Birmingham University believe pigeons are the answer.

:16:34.:16:38.

City Flocks is a new project which sends pigeons

:16:39.:16:40.

with sensors strapped to their backs off into the sky to record more

:16:41.:16:43.

Graham Satchell went to watch their maiden flight.

:16:44.:16:54.

Can pigeons help us in the battle against air pollution?

:16:55.:16:57.

Brilliant, I think this is going to work really well, today.

:16:58.:17:00.

It sounds far-fetched, but academics from Birmingham University

:17:01.:17:02.

It's sort of, first given me the look that maybe you're

:17:03.:17:15.

giving me where, sort of, "is this real, is this

:17:16.:17:17.

We have a superfast temperature sensor.

:17:18.:17:21.

Climate specialist Rick Thomas is planning to strap

:17:22.:17:23.

these tiny sensor packs to the backs of pigeons.

:17:24.:17:25.

If we know the temperature above the rooftops, then we can test

:17:26.:17:28.

Fitting the sensors is a delicate operation.

:17:29.:17:41.

They are tiny, just 5% of the pigeon's weight,

:17:42.:17:47.

We didn't see the devices fall off when they flew off,

:17:48.:18:03.

They looked happy enough, they looked like pigeons flying to me.

:18:04.:18:07.

The pigeons will fly just over a mile.

:18:08.:18:13.

This, the rather disorientating view from pigeon-cam but what exactly

:18:14.:18:15.

is it the scientists are trying to discover?

:18:16.:18:20.

They already know that nitrous oxide, the pollution that comes

:18:21.:18:24.

out of diesel engines, rises with the heat coming

:18:25.:18:26.

from roads and buildings to rooftop level.

:18:27.:18:31.

But what happens to the pollution next?

:18:32.:18:32.

To model it, they need accurate temperature measurements

:18:33.:18:37.

I kind of thought, well, birds, they fly everywhere.

:18:38.:18:51.

If they could carry our sensors and they could be tiny

:18:52.:18:53.

and accurate enough, we could start to understand

:18:54.:18:55.

the dispersion of air pollution around the city.

:18:56.:18:57.

Just six minutes after taking off, the pigeons are back.

:18:58.:19:00.

There is an anxious wait as the sensor is retrieved.

:19:01.:19:04.

This is what the data shows, the route taken by the pigeons

:19:05.:19:21.

and critically the temperature just above the rooftops.

:19:22.:19:23.

It's not a particularly heroic name but pigeon number 80,

:19:24.:19:35.

we salute you and your contribution to the fight against air pollution.

:19:36.:19:38.

Graham Satchell BBC Midlands Today, near Tewkesbury.

:19:39.:19:47.

And now the team you saw there want to fit pollution monitors

:19:48.:19:55.

So if you own racing pigeons and think you could help,

:19:56.:19:58.

then the researchers would love to hear from you.

:19:59.:20:01.

You can find all the contact details on our facebook page at

:20:02.:20:04.

The new Coventry City manager Mark Robins has admitted today

:20:05.:20:07.

he faces a much tougher task in his second spell at the club.

:20:08.:20:11.

Robins first joined Coventry in September 2012 and steered them

:20:12.:20:13.

This time he finds the Sky Blues bottom,

:20:14.:20:16.

they're 13 points from safety with just 11 games to play.

:20:17.:20:19.

And plenty of managers have tried and failed to stop the slide.

:20:20.:20:22.

Think you've seen this before? I reckon you're right. And I don't

:20:23.:20:38.

just mean Mark Robins. There's been a sky-blue sliding door under the

:20:39.:20:43.

current owners. Chris Coleman was their first managerial appointment

:20:44.:20:47.

in February 2008 and there's been a steady stream since. In the nine

:20:48.:20:53.

years and three months since SISU bought the club, they've given the

:20:54.:20:56.

job to nine different managers and now Mark Robins is coming back for

:20:57.:21:00.

more. It wasn't a case of desperation to come back at any

:21:01.:21:03.

cost, it was desperate to come and help this club. Having seen what's

:21:04.:21:07.

been going on for the length of time it has been going on, we've got to

:21:08.:21:10.

try to turn it round. If they sign of how much was the plight is for

:21:11.:21:14.

Mark Robins this time that today's press conference at the training

:21:15.:21:18.

ground. At least, last time the first one was in the Ricoh Arena.

:21:19.:21:23.

The stadium is now four match days only. In 15 months' time, they must

:21:24.:21:28.

find somewhere else. No plush office like last time and no plan for the

:21:29.:21:33.

future. This has happened really quickly so I've had brief, sort of,

:21:34.:21:39.

dialogue. My primary concern and interest was the fact that I have

:21:40.:21:42.

been given the tools to be able to do the job. There remains one source

:21:43.:21:46.

of comfort for sky blues' fans, next month they play at Wembley for just

:21:47.:21:51.

the first time in their history. There are 12 cup finals for us. One

:21:52.:21:55.

of those happens to be at Wembley. It is a day out for everybody to try

:21:56.:22:00.

and enjoy. The key focus for me is trying to get things right on the

:22:01.:22:04.

pitch. Have a real good go at staying in League 1.

:22:05.:22:07.

Pressley to Slade - they've all tried to turn

:22:08.:22:10.

We wish him well. Coventry not playing tonight although a lot of

:22:11.:22:21.

games on. And Mark Robbins first match

:22:22.:22:24.

in charge is on Saturday, when the Sky Blues take

:22:25.:22:26.

on Bradford City at the Ricoh. Gloucestershire's double

:22:27.:22:29.

Olympic dressage champion Charlotte Dujardin has picked up

:22:30.:22:30.

another glittering medal. The Newent-based rider

:22:31.:22:33.

was at Buckingham Palace today to receive her CBE from the Queen

:22:34.:22:35.

for services to equestrianism. Miss Dujardin, with her horse,

:22:36.:22:40.

Valegro, won two gold medals at the 2012 Olympics in London

:22:41.:22:42.

and retained her individual title in Rio last year,

:22:43.:22:45.

to add to the eight gold medals It's a massive honour and a huge

:22:46.:22:59.

privilege to be receiving this award, today. And to be here amongst

:23:00.:23:02.

so many other incredible people as well. It's a really amazing day.

:23:03.:23:10.

Even though Valegro's retired, it's not the end of me. I have 11 up and

:23:11.:23:14.

coming horses. I'm currently really busy training and seeing which one I

:23:15.:23:18.

can have as another future star. Congratulations, Charlotte.

:23:19.:23:22.

Billy Elliot, the hit film which told the story of young boy's

:23:23.:23:25.

fight to become a ballet dancer, against the backdrop

:23:26.:23:27.

of the miners strike, made a star of actor Jamie Bell.

:23:28.:23:30.

Now the stage musical is on tour and local lad Lewis Smallman

:23:31.:23:32.

from West Bromwich is bringing Billy Elliot to the Midlands.

:23:33.:23:35.

Our Arts Reporter Satnam Rana has been to meet him.

:23:36.:23:41.

It's 16 years since Billy Elliot the film was released

:23:42.:23:43.

and on the back of that success came the musical version.

:23:44.:23:48.

Dancing his way onto stage as Billy Elliot, local lad

:23:49.:23:58.

Sometimes get butterflies if, like, there is, like,

:23:59.:24:08.

a new step in the dance or new notes or something.

:24:09.:24:12.

But it's, like, scary and exciting, like, I get really

:24:13.:24:16.

hyped up and get loads of energy inside.

:24:17.:24:18.

And then just release it all in the dance.

:24:19.:24:20.

At the hippodrome in Birmingham today, his former dance teacher

:24:21.:24:23.

A woman he says encouraged him to audition for this role.

:24:24.:24:29.

He does credit you as an inspiration, so, you're

:24:30.:24:31.

It's very flattering, but he's done all the hard work.

:24:32.:24:37.

But, yeah, it's wonderful, absolutely wonderful.

:24:38.:24:40.

Lewis is one of four child actors taking on the role, but for him,

:24:41.:24:43.

this part of the tour is extra special.

:24:44.:24:46.

I feel, like, a bit more, like, energetic.

:24:47.:24:53.

Because, like, in the other places I wasn't really near to home.

:24:54.:24:56.

I was a bit, like, people can't really get to see me

:24:57.:24:59.

but in Birmingham, loads of people are coming to see me.

:25:00.:25:02.

This is one 12-year-old who is flying high and loving

:25:03.:25:04.

Another beautiful sunny morning and another good walk today.

:25:05.:25:13.

Felt like a breath of fresh air - in fact,

:25:14.:25:16.

There is indeed not immediately. I'm glad you took my advice didn't

:25:17.:25:24.

wasted. Keeping up these sorts

:25:25.:25:30.

of standards is not easy when you have a number of weather

fronts But for much of the region,

there was no shortage of sunshine perfect weather for ramblers

:26:29.:26:34.

Some early morning sunshine. In the afternoon, that rain will move away

:26:35.:26:38.

to the east and we will see much drier conditions. Sunshine to the

:26:39.:26:42.

north, cloudy conditions to the south and central parts.

:26:43.:26:44.

Temperatures in the warmer air mass will rise to around 10-12 tomorrow.

:26:45.:26:51.

Tomorrow evening and overnight, we will see the cloudy conditions

persist. More cloud starting to gather from the west with a new bout

:26:56.:26:58.

of rain heading into that direction. It doesn't amount to much, just a

sprinkling. A dry end to the night. Temperatures are rising even

further, falling just to seven, eight Celsius. Further ahead,

:27:08.:27:14.

Thursday is a decent day. One for ramblers. Sunny spells, dry weather

and highs of 13 Celsius. Still mild for Friday but cloudy with outbreaks

of light rain. Tomorrow on Midlands Today,

with your late update, including
