An interpreter from Afghanistan, who served with British forces,

:00:00.:00:09.

says the Government has committed a great injustice by not

:00:10.:00:12.

Javed Hotak, who's living illegally in the Midlands,

:00:13.:00:17.

says he's received death threats from the Taliban, and fears

:00:18.:00:20.

for his life if the Home Office send him back.

:00:21.:00:22.

Last year, another war translator living in West Bromwich,

:00:23.:00:26.

apparently killed himself, rather than face deportation.

:00:27.:00:28.

Audrey Dias has this exclusive report.

:00:29.:00:32.

Now I feel ashamed and I regret my time with them.

:00:33.:00:42.

This was not the life that Javed Hotak imagined after spending

:00:43.:00:45.

two years fighting alongside British Armed Forces in Afghanistan.

:00:46.:00:49.

I was working as a soldier and interpreter as well

:00:50.:00:54.

Javed also worked for the Afghan special narcotics force, disrupting

:00:55.:01:03.

His reward - death threats from the Taliban.

:01:04.:01:08.

So he fled to Britain in 2008, hoping to find asylum in return

:01:09.:01:11.

Javed handed in the death threats he received from the Taliban

:01:12.:01:18.

In this one, for example, it says, "you will be in hell very soon."

:01:19.:01:24.

Here, they accuse him of being a "spy for the Crusaders"

:01:25.:01:28.

and sentence him and his family to the death penalty.

:01:29.:01:34.

Now, the Home Office refused to accept that these letters

:01:35.:01:37.

were genuine and they turned down his claim for asylum.

:01:38.:01:39.

Last week, the Commons Defence Select Committee heard

:01:40.:01:41.

The perception all over the country for them is that they have

:01:42.:01:47.

served the infidel forces, they are the eyes and ears

:01:48.:01:49.

Something dreadful will happen and we have no

:01:50.:01:53.

Now, if he is sent back, that would be an appalling act

:01:54.:01:58.

by our government and there would be one person to blame,

:01:59.:02:01.

that would be the ministers of the Crown and government

:02:02.:02:05.

in what is I think an act that is as shameful

:02:06.:02:08.

as any I can remember the British government taking.

:02:09.:02:11.

We have referred to the fact that all these other foreign governments

:02:12.:02:13.

have changed their opinion, they have lifted their interpreters

:02:14.:02:16.

out of Afghanistan and giving them leave to remain.

:02:17.:02:18.

Javed is making a renewed asylum application later this month

:02:19.:02:20.

I think it is really unimaginable to put yourself

:02:21.:02:26.

in a position like him, being let down

:02:27.:02:33.

by a government after working in the most dangerous circumstances.

:02:34.:02:36.

For now he finds himself working illegally in the West Midlands,

:02:37.:02:38.

relying on friends for a roof over his head.

:02:39.:02:41.

If you can't take the responsibility,

:02:42.:02:51.

don't send your troops, maybe if we worked for somebody else,

:02:52.:02:53.

Audrey Dias, BBC Midlands Today, Birmingham.

:02:54.:02:56.

In a statement the Home Office said...

:02:57.:03:05.

Charities supporting vulnerable people in Birmingham,

:03:06.:03:06.

have staged a protest over the threat of proposed

:03:07.:03:09.

Birmingham City Council says it needs to save ?170 million over

:03:10.:03:13.

the next four years and blames the Government for the

:03:14.:03:15.

Charities are concerned that carers, victims of domestic abuse,

:03:16.:03:29.

the homeless and people with disabilities will suffer

:03:30.:03:32.

greatly if the proposed budget cuts go ahead.

:03:33.:03:35.

They are going to have to pay more if they make these cuts.

:03:36.:03:41.

They will pay more in their homelessness applications,

:03:42.:03:45.

in their anti-social behaviour, in their policing,

:03:46.:03:50.

in their care costs, residential care costs,

:03:51.:03:52.

you know, we have clearly articulated to the council that this

:03:53.:03:55.

The City Council says following a recent public

:03:56.:04:00.

consultation it has made some changes in the supporting people

:04:01.:04:03.

budget to ?3.2 million in the new financial year.

:04:04.:04:08.

But it's blaming the government for not providing enough money.

:04:09.:04:14.

We believe that we have done some considerable movement in terms

:04:15.:04:17.

of the level of those cuts but the reality is that these

:04:18.:04:20.

are cuts that aren't decided here in the Council House

:04:21.:04:22.

where people will be protesting, these are decisions that are made

:04:23.:04:25.

in number ten and number 11 Downing Street.

:04:26.:04:29.

The proposed budget will be taken to a full council meeting

:04:30.:04:32.

It's also worth just mentioning that earlier today,

:04:33.:04:38.

the City Council announced that it was going to invest

:04:39.:04:41.

?183 million into council housing to improve 20,000 properties over

:04:42.:04:45.

Amy Cole, BBC Midlands Today, Birmingham.

:04:46.:04:52.

A Birmingham student who went paintballing to train for battle

:04:53.:04:54.

has been jailed for trying to travel to Syria to join

:04:55.:04:57.

20-year-old Humza Ali, from Ward End, was today sentenced

:04:58.:05:04.

to nine years after being found guilty of terror

:05:05.:05:06.

Two West Midlands Police officers have been arrested in connection

:05:07.:05:22.

with conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office, conspiracy

:05:23.:05:24.

The two officers, aged 47 and 35, who are based at Perry Barr

:05:25.:05:29.

in Birmingham, were arrested at their homes during early morning

:05:30.:05:32.

raids by the force's counter corruption unit.

:05:33.:05:34.

Five other men and a woman were also arrested.

:05:35.:05:39.

A man has gone on trial accused of murdering

:05:40.:05:41.

16-year-old Michael Warham was found collapsed with stab wounds,

:05:42.:05:46.

on Wayford Close on the Meole estate last August.

:05:47.:05:49.

Declan Graves, who's 19 and from Speke in Liverpool,

:05:50.:05:53.

The availability of hospital beds for patients is a recurring issue,

:05:54.:06:01.

but now doctors in Birmingham are piloting a scheme

:06:02.:06:05.

Some Leukaemia patients will be sent home immediately

:06:06.:06:08.

They usually have to spend around two weeks in hospital.

:06:09.:06:12.

Specialists also hope this could cut down on infections.

:06:13.:06:14.

Here's our Health Correspondent, Michele Paduano.

:06:15.:06:16.

So, we are probably about ten minutes away from starting.

:06:17.:06:19.

John Wyartt had high dose chemotherapy yesterday

:06:20.:06:21.

to destroy his blood cancer, but it's brutal and also

:06:22.:06:25.

His own stem cells were frozen before treatment.

:06:26.:06:29.

They are now being thawed and put back into his body.

:06:30.:06:32.

These are gel packs and they have been pre-warmed

:06:33.:06:35.

And these will help with the thawing process.

:06:36.:06:40.

Patients normally spend two weeks in hospital, but tonight,

:06:41.:06:42.

She has been cleaning the house for the last week solid and yes,

:06:43.:06:48.

the place has got antibacterial wipes everywhere and just every room

:06:49.:06:51.

has got them in and washes for your hands and it's

:06:52.:06:57.

Hey Ho, it's all for the best, isn't it?

:06:58.:07:05.

Patients are prone to infection and it can be fatal,

:07:06.:07:08.

but this small pilot study wants to see if some can be

:07:09.:07:11.

They stay in their own environment, they try to stay away

:07:12.:07:16.

from the hospital acquired infections, they have their own food

:07:17.:07:18.

and most of the patients would say that hospital food is not great,

:07:19.:07:21.

but it is something that when they have such an intensive

:07:22.:07:24.

This unit has 25 beds and serves a population of 1.4 million.

:07:25.:07:30.

There is always pressure on NHS beds, so if people can go home,

:07:31.:07:33.

then more cancer patients can be treated more quickly.

:07:34.:07:36.

Four days after transplant and John is visited by nurses.

:07:37.:07:39.

They take blood and check how the treatment is affecting him.

:07:40.:07:44.

It's just so nice to be able to sleep, go to your own bed,

:07:45.:07:47.

watch your own telly and just generally relax.

:07:48.:07:51.

It's better for John, but more pressure for his wife?

:07:52.:07:55.

Yeah, I do feel a sense of responsibility, it has to be

:07:56.:07:58.

said, being completely honest, but I think overall I think

:07:59.:08:03.

it is definitely, I do probably prefer it because I know that it's

:08:04.:08:10.

But John is hoping for a cure that will keep him out

:08:11.:08:17.

A busy night of football fixtures to take you through.

:08:18.:08:24.

In the Championship, a bad night for our clubs.

:08:25.:08:27.

Aston Villa's defence have questions to answer

:08:28.:08:29.

Birmingham City lost 2-1 at Preston, Craig Gardner

:08:30.:08:34.

And Wolves were beaten 1-0 at home by relegation threatened Wigan.

:08:35.:08:42.

In League One, Coventry City denied all three points by a late equaliser

:08:43.:08:45.

Port Vale lost 2-0 to Millwall, Shrewsbury also beaten

:08:46.:08:50.

2-1 by Peterborough, and Walsall took a point,

:08:51.:08:52.

In League Two, defeat at Stevenage for Cheltenham Town, beaten 2-1.

:08:53.:08:58.

And in National League, to complete a poor night for our clubs,

:08:59.:09:02.

Solihull Moors were beaten 2-1 by Woking.

:09:03.:09:07.

A rescue dog who captured hearts across the Midlands,

:09:08.:09:10.

got the ultimate Valentines present today by having having

:09:11.:09:12.

Molly the terrier cross was rescued by the RSPCA in Coventry.

:09:13.:09:18.

She underwent heart surgery, after well-wishers pledged more

:09:19.:09:21.

than ?3,000 to pay for the operation.

:09:22.:09:25.

Earlier, the medical team in Solihull told us Molly

:09:26.:09:27.

She came through the surgery really well.

:09:28.:09:31.

Everything went according to plan in the end.

:09:32.:09:35.

We had a few complications as we mentioned earlier

:09:36.:09:37.

but everything has worked out very well for her so she now has

:09:38.:09:40.

a heart that's beating about four times faster

:09:41.:09:42.

That's all from me for now, have a good night.

:09:43.:09:47.

I'll leave you with Shefali, who has the forecast.

:09:48.:09:52.

Hello, good evening to you. It all started off so well for Valentine's

:09:53.:09:59.

day with two lovebirds on the river in Warwick and some lovely sunshine

:10:00.:10:03.

in Staffordshire. Then the cloud started to thicken up, leaving these

:10:04.:10:13.

sheep curious. They were probably wondering what is going to happen in

:10:14.:10:17.

the next few day. I can tell you, we have some rain coming along tomorrow

:10:18.:10:20.

and then again on Friday was all coming from the West. There will be

:10:21.:10:25.

ready for farmers and anyone needing it. Then we have a rest on Thursday.

:10:26.:10:30.

Crucially these winds draw in much milder conditions. We will see mist,

:10:31.:10:36.

fog and cloud as well on the way. We have quite a bit developing right

:10:37.:10:40.

now. Some hill fog, quite right spread, quite extensive. A lot of

:10:41.:10:47.

cloud there. Ten bridges five or six else's, so a fairly mild at murky

:10:48.:10:51.

start to the day tomorrow full stop gradually through the day we will

:10:52.:10:54.

start to see the cloud thickening again from the south-west,

:10:55.:10:57.

introducing some rain, perhaps some hail and Thunder packed in drink

:10:58.:11:02.

because of the day. Top temperature 10 Celsius. The National is next.

:11:03.:11:03.

Good night. fog around to watch out for. Jon

:11:04.:11:05.

Hammond with the national forecast now.

:11:06.:11:09.

Good evening. There is some rain in the forecast but not a lot. Plenty

:11:10.:11:14.

of dry weather to look forward to as we head to the weekend. Cloud

:11:15.:11:19.

delivering some rain but plenty of spaces in between, hence my

:11:20.:11:25.

optimism. One of these blobs of cloud is producing dampness right

:11:26.:11:29.

now. We could see a glancing blow across the far south-east through

:11:30.:11:33.

the early hours and later some rain arriving across the far south-west.

:11:34.:11:37.

In between some hill fog overnight, not desperately cold, for most a

:11:38.:11:41.

touch of frost across the northern Glens of Scotland. At the other end

:11:42.:11:46.

of the UK some wet weather first thing for breakfast, pushing through

:11:47.:11:49.

Devon and Cornwall into South Wales. It won't hang around. Things will

:11:50.:11:53.

brighten up later in the day. Ahead of that a lot of low cloud around, a

:11:54.:11:56.

rather grey start to the day.

:11:57.:11:58.
