Good evening. Our top story: 72 arrests and add-

on crackdown on suspected drug dealers. And the locals are invited

to towards. We will be on the frontline of

Operation Audacious. And how multi-million pound

investment will help create private sector jobs in the north-west.

a moving story, of a couple whose lives have been changed forever.

Dressing the stars. A Rochdale boutique has become one of the best

in Britain. And she did not have the X Factor,

but she has still become a star. 1,000 officers raiding 100

addresses simultaneously. Hardly surprising that greater Manchester

police say that today's drug raids across Manchester and Salford were

there be August operation in a single day.

They arrested more than 70 suspected of dealers.

And they did it all under the watchful eye of local people they

had taken. The media were also invited to watch the watchers

watching the police. Was it useful, or was it just a PR stunt? It is a

question that her chief reporter had been asking.

This is one of 100 addresses that received a visit from the police

this morning. The operation, codenamed Audacious

involved drowned in a suspected drug dealers and parts of

Manchester and Salford. 1,000 officers were involved,

joined by 130 local people who had been invited to witness what had

happened. It was interesting to be given the

opportunity to come on board and see what the police do.

Today was about the police addressing public concerns, and

more importantly being seen to address the concerns. There were

reports that drug dealing had taken place here, so addresses in the

neighbourhood were among those visited today.

Did this have more to do with PR than policing?

PR is a cynical term. It was about reassurance, and there is nothing

more reassuring than knowing that when you ask the police to do

something that they do it. But you cannot carry out this level of

operation normally, so will it make a difference in the long-term?

with drug dealing every day. Some of those who went along for

the right seemed convinced it was worthwhile. We were made to feel

really involved. We were actually part of the operation, but not

actively part of its. Will this make a long-term difference to the

neighbourhood? What they have demonstrated is working with the

police, we can affect change as much as the police can. The police

have made more than 70 arrests, and seized more is -- considerable

It is voyeurism and intrusion into other people's private lives and

moments of anguish. I hope this practice is abolish.

know where the drug dealers are, but it might put off others from

getting involved. Of course, they are only suspect the drug dealers.

Almost a year ago the Government set out plans to cut spending on

local government. Ministers say spending is a -- cuts are necessary

to balance the books. But people lost their jobs and

services disappear. Now councils are preparing to go through the

process again. Local government is actually going

through a four year period of cuts, and councils are setting their

budgets for the second year. Those figures are beginning to

emerge. Last night the leadership of Oldham council voted through

of Oldham council voted through cuts of �25 million, and claimed

that 400 jobs could go. This evening, Trafford Council said it

needs to cut �16 million, putting 100 jobs at risk. The reality is

that some councils are coping better than others. I have been

comparing two of them, Lancashire County Council and Blackpool

He is one of the council leaders who does not complain about the

cuts, partly because he is conservative and partly because

Lancashire County Council is coping. It's going very well, and we are

run a better position than we thought possible, because as you

know, we started off doing a three- year budgets so we could introduce

any reductions and expenditure in a considered way, rather than having

to panic through the different years. Having done that, it meant

we know what savings we have to make and when.

In February, people campaigned against proposed cuts to social

care. The council says it is closing some facilities and

refurbishing others. John Pearson got his son James into residential

care, but says the council made it very difficult.

The priority is the money, not the individual and the individual's

needs. Everything is always driven by money. Do you think of it had

been left up to the county council, James would not be where he has?

losses announced for the public sector today, but there was also a

boost for the private sector. Nick Clegg was in the region to confirm

the Government will invest money in the Stobart Group was marred

million has already been raised to fund the project. The Stobart Group

insists it is vital money for. The final �9 million as a small

part, but it is vital. We would start the project a lot sooner with

having a fit -- the kick-start. It allows us to get on with the

process. Phase two is expected to be

finished by spring 2013. In other news: The family of the

mother and daughter murdered in Southport say they are bewildered

and devastated by what has happened. Jim Huyton is said to be -- said to

be distraught at the loss of his wife Alice. They had been married

for 55 years. The family says they were cogs in a close-knit family.

Police are still trying to find Angela Holgate's lodger, who was

last seen in France. The Lancashire schoolboys have been

taken to hospital after their school bus hit a building in the

centre of Whalley this afternoon. They were sitting at the front of

the double-decker bus, returning home from St a gusting's Roman

Catholic High School. The man in charge of a Cumbrian

maternity unit at the centre of a police inquiry will face questions

from county councillors next week. Police have been investigating

several deaths at Furness General Hospital. The head of the trust

will appear at a special meeting of the Kinsey count -- the county

council on Monday. The funeral of the former Bolton

and Everton footballer Gary Speed will be held later this week. He

was found hanged at his Cheshire home last month. A private funeral

will take place in Wales on Friday, and a public memorial service is

being planned for the new year. The number of people with TB in the

north-west has reached its highest in more than 10 years, according to

the Health Protection Agency. There were more than 800 cases last year.

Blackburn had the most new cases per head of population, with 80

recorded. This week we are looking at

dementia. Into the disease and the issues surrounding it. Today we

meet a couple from Liverpool. Doug has Alzheimer's, one form of

dementia. His wife Rose is his carer.

For one week, we asked her to keep a video diary for us, detailing

what it is like to live with It has been a very exhausting day

has had see real. Now I've got to make sure that his lunch is ready.

I've got to leave him a mid-morning snack, and then I have my breakfast

and try to get out. I have checked everywhere. You know where your

lunches. And you mid-morning snacks. I will bring you when I go to work

-- I will phone you when I get to work, and then I will phone and

tell you when to have lunch. We came home and I asked him to

take his coat off, and because I asked him to do it, he did not want

to do it. So he sat with his coat on. He wants to be in control of

himself, but if you do not tell him, he will not do it.

We're off to bed. He has been upstairs and decided to get himself

ready for bed. As you can see, everything he is wearing his inside

out. I will settle him down and see that

he has his medication, and then see On a day like this, things seem

better. We can have good days and we can have bad days. When they are

bad, the a really bad. Sometimes when they are good, they can be

quite fun at times. We laugh because we don't want to cry,

though, really. That looks exhausting. It must be

devastating to see the man you have been married to for 30 years slide

their own car or maybe even their own home. But one man has gone a

step further with his grand design. Graham Bayliss from the Isle of Man

has spent the last two years making his own submarine! He hopes to

pilot it to the bottom of the Irish Sea. But there's still a little

more work to do before it makes its maiden voyage, as Kelly Foran has

And he told us of his life in the land of submarines.

This man is building his own at submarine from scratch. I have

wanted to do this for many years. I have always been interested in a

sea. The joiner started building small models as a hobby. His

friends could not believe it when he said he was building one that

was 16 ft long. They thought and is being silly at first. But now they

have jumped on the bandwagon. They want to know when it will be

launched. It stands out from all of the other vessels in the harbour in

Douglas, raising some eyebrows. looks slightly dodgy. If they put

graffiti on the side and made it look pretty, that would be all

right. If it goes to plan, it will go 350 ft below the surface. It is

hopeful it will only take a couple of months to get out the inside and

then it will be ready to go into the Irish Sea. I don't want to rush

it and make a mistake. It is my life on the line. I am positive

that it will work. Well, I hope he is right and it

perhaps Rochdale doesn't spring to mind. But a boutique in the town

has made it onto a prestigious list of the country's top 100 fashion

influences. Bond Street it might not be, but hidden among the

bakeries and charity shops is 25 Ten on Yorkshire Street. It's made

its name by dressing celebrities - but is sticking to its Rochdale

roots. Nothing has caught my eye yet! But

I was quite surprised when we got the news. It was a great

achievement for me personally and for the shop and for the town. Also

for independent retailers across the land for. The judges noted that

you had been firm to your roots. How important has that been to you?

Well, myself and the other owner are so passionate about Rochdale,

fashion and this town centre, so it is natural that these days year and

continue to deliver a first class service delivering wonderful brands.

Michelle Keegan helped put you on the map when she wore that stress

and was floated Briton's sexiest Female. She is lovely. It was

fabulous to see her on the tabloid front pages in a dress that she got

from year. Probably the biggest endorsement you can get and you

It is exciting. I am now back to normality and realising how big it

was. How much my life has changed. For me, it has been dream to
