Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Roger Johnson and | :00:02. | :00:09.
Ranvir Singh. Our top story: An expensive night out. Plans to | :00:09. | :00:11.
charge for alcohol-related hospital treatment are considered. It's one | :00:11. | :00:16.
of several suggestions to tackle the booze culture. Also tonight. | :00:16. | :00:19.
Racist attack: Police hunt this man after a mother was badly burned by | :00:19. | :00:29.
a liquid while walking with her baby. Could this be the resort of | :00:29. | :00:34.
seeing airbrushed images of celebrities? A petition's launched | :00:34. | :00:36.
to ban airbrushed images of thin celebrities being targeted at | :00:37. | :00:41.
children. I would set, I will not have an apple this morning, I will | :00:41. | :00:45.
have half of one Apple because I will get to where they are, lot | :00:45. | :00:51.
quicker. Singing the praises. How residents in one town have recorded | :00:51. | :00:56.
their lives in song. And soaking up the sun. The region swelters as | :00:56. | :01:06.
:01:06. | :01:13. | ||
temperatures top 21 Celsius. But will the good weather last? Ask any | :01:13. | :01:17.
frontline medic - working in an A&E unit on a Saturday evening here in | :01:17. | :01:22.
the North West - and they would probably use the following words to | :01:22. | :01:25.
chaos - with the staff themselves in fear of being injured. Many - if | :01:25. | :01:28.
not all - of the problems will be alcohol-related. So, is it time to | :01:28. | :01:31.
fine hospital drunks? 50,000 alcohol-related injuries are | :01:31. | :01:33.
treated in Greater Manchester alone every year. Manchester Council | :01:33. | :01:36.
certainly think it's time to consider fines, but would it work? | :01:36. | :01:46.
:01:46. | :01:47. | ||
Stuart Flinders reports. More of us are drinking too much, more are | :01:47. | :01:51.
binge drinking, and booze is putting more of us in hospital. | :01:51. | :01:56.
accident and emergency departments they can be quite destructive, | :01:56. | :02:02.
patients can be violent and abusive towards staff and it makes it | :02:02. | :02:07.
difficult to manage other patients who have other problems, than | :02:07. | :02:12.
alcohol problems. A conference of health workers, the council and the | :02:12. | :02:15.
police in Manchester today asked what's to be done. The conference | :02:15. | :02:20.
was told that every year, 50,000 people arrive at an accident and | :02:20. | :02:26.
emergency unit in Manchester with an alcohol-related injury. Should | :02:26. | :02:35.
they face being fined? We should be able to find people for anti-social | :02:35. | :02:39.
behaviour and make them think about them clogging up NHS resources. | :02:39. | :02:46.
That is a power that we should be able to use. At weekends in Nice | :02:46. | :02:51.
and and emergency, 80% of cases are alcohol-related. We need to try and | :02:51. | :03:01.
:03:01. | :03:03. | ||
recovery or college says that it would not work. The people who get | :03:03. | :03:08.
themselves into that situation do not care and the possibility of | :03:08. | :03:12.
being fined, I don't think it would bother them. One of the region's | :03:12. | :03:22.
:03:22. | :03:22. | ||
alcohol says the weekend drunk example, somebody comes in with his | :03:22. | :03:26.
facial injury and a nurse of Dr mentions it and the patient says | :03:26. | :03:32.
yes that alcohol is related to it, and they can say, you can see a | :03:32. | :03:36.
specialist nurse, and then the patient can engage with that that | :03:36. | :03:38.
night and that can be very effective in reducing consumption. | :03:38. | :03:45.
The drinking has doubled since the 1960s. The question is, how can we | :03:45. | :03:52.
deal with the consequences? Police have described it as an "appalling" | :03:52. | :03:59.
racially abused and then doused with a corrosive liquid in broad | :03:59. | :04:01.
daylight. The black victim suffered burns to her chest and back. | :04:01. | :04:06.
Detectives are treating it as a help to find her attacker. Abbie | :04:06. | :04:16.
:04:16. | :04:16. | ||
Jones reports. It is a busy street, a quick rictus of a shopping city. | :04:16. | :04:19.
But as the 29-year-old mother, originally from Cameroon, walked | :04:19. | :04:22.
along this subway off Broad Street on Thursday afternoon, she was | :04:22. | :04:25.
viciously attacked. A white man in his 40s threw what police say was a | :04:25. | :04:29.
making a racist comment. She was with her baby daughter at the time. | :04:29. | :04:35.
It is appalling, it is a young lady with a child, entirely unprovoked | :04:35. | :04:43.
incident, and it is being treated very seriously. The woman was found | :04:43. | :04:47.
slumped on the floor inside the subway by a man who works nearby, | :04:47. | :04:52.
who called an ambulance. She had burns on her chest and back and | :04:52. | :04:58.
were -- was taken to hospital. Police say that it was incredibly | :04:58. | :05:02.
lucky that she was not burned on the face and that the child was not | :05:02. | :05:05.
injured. She did not know the attacker and it seems to have been | :05:05. | :05:08.
a one-off incident. People using the subway today were shocked by | :05:08. | :05:18.
:05:18. | :05:26. | ||
what happened. It is terrible, especially if it is, like, racial. | :05:26. | :05:28.
The subway plays loud music to discourage people hanging around | :05:28. | :05:31.
but has no CCTV cameras. Police hope someone will recognise the man | :05:31. | :05:40.
and have increased patrols. Three people are still being questioned | :05:40. | :05:43.
on suspicion of murder after a man's body was found in a wheelie | :05:43. | :05:47.
bin on woodland in Wigan. The discovery was made yesterday by | :05:47. | :05:50.
walkers in the Bickershaw area. The dead man hasn't yet been named. The | :05:50. | :05:54.
leader of Rochdale Council wants to stop extremist groups holding | :05:54. | :06:01.
demonstrations in Greater Manchester. There was another | :06:01. | :06:04.
protest in Heywood at the weekend similar to this, held last month. | :06:04. | :06:06.
Some local businesses closed early again because of the demonstrations. | :06:06. | :06:09.
This week, the council leader will ask the other nine authorities in | :06:09. | :06:14.
Greater Manchester to back his call for a ban. Air accident | :06:14. | :06:16.
investigators have found a mechanical failure caused a plane | :06:16. | :06:20.
to crash land at the Isle of Man's airport. The aircraft skidded off | :06:21. | :06:22.
the runway at Ronaldsway earlier this month. No passengers or crew | :06:22. | :06:26.
were injured. The report released today says a corrosion crack caused | :06:26. | :06:31.
the landing gear to collapse. Cumbria's smallest school - which | :06:31. | :06:35.
is threatened with closure - has unveiled plans to become an academy. | :06:35. | :06:39.
Captain Shaw's school in Bootle near Millom has just 16 pupils. | :06:39. | :06:42.
It's expected to shut this summer unless it can persuade the | :06:42. | :06:51.
Government to take it out of local authority control. Next, the tragic | :06:51. | :07:00.
tale of Stanley and Peggy Wilson from Pendle. Stanley Wilson was | :07:00. | :07:02.
suffering from paranoia but was allowed home from hospital before | :07:03. | :07:06.
his condition was fully under control. He stabbed his wife peggy | :07:07. | :07:09.
to death within hours of getting there. Our Chief reporter Dave | :07:09. | :07:16.
Guest has the story. Stanley and Peggy Wilson met and married late | :07:16. | :07:20.
in life and were blissfully happy, a devoted and loving couple. Then | :07:20. | :07:26.
last year, in February, 92 year old Stanley turned on his 89 year old | :07:26. | :07:32.
wife, stabbing her to death, before turning the knife on himself. | :07:32. | :07:36.
a tragic end to two very happy people and the family are | :07:36. | :07:42.
devastated. A inquest heard that Stanley's behaviour began to change | :07:42. | :07:50.
convinced his wife and family was not trying to poison him, and was | :07:50. | :07:53.
taken to hospital where his paranoia was recognised but doctors | :07:53. | :07:58.
allowed him home before it was fully under control. Within hours | :07:58. | :08:04.
of getting on, him and his wife were dead. The coroner returned a | :08:04. | :08:08.
verdict of unlawful killing on Mrs Wilson and that Mr Wilson had | :08:08. | :08:14.
killed himself because of acute mental illness. The coroner said | :08:14. | :08:17.
that the hospital's discharge procedures had not been robust | :08:17. | :08:27.
:08:27. | :08:46. | ||
case and telling them to review lessons that can be learned, so | :08:46. | :08:51.
that this does not happen again. All concerned hope that lessons | :08:51. | :09:00.
really will be learned. Young people are constantly exposed to | :09:00. | :09:02.
glossy images of impossibly glamorous men and women. On TV, | :09:02. | :09:12.
:09:12. | :09:12. | ||
usually they're told that slimmer is better. Now the mother of a | :09:13. | :09:14.
former anorexia sufferer from Warrington has launched an e- | :09:14. | :09:21.
petition, aimed at getting the thinner than they really are. Andy | :09:21. | :09:24.
her Mum Lynne enjoy the sunshine with family pet Dylan this | :09:24. | :09:30.
afternoon. Rachael is healthy now. But this is what Rachael looked | :09:30. | :09:33.
like five years ago when she was in the grip of anorexia. Her illness | :09:33. | :09:39.
was driven in large part by what She cut out magazine pictures of | :09:39. | :09:47.
celebrities she wanted to emulate. My thinking was that I will wait | :09:47. | :09:51.
half when Apple, instead of an apple, because I will get to where | :09:51. | :10:01.
they are, quicker. At one stage Rachel was 48 hours away from die. | :10:01. | :10:07.
No, her mother has launched a new petition aimed at banning images of | :10:07. | :10:16.
unnaturally than celebrities aimed at children aged under 16. She says | :10:16. | :10:20.
what children think of as being desirable is actually unattainable | :10:20. | :10:30.
:10:30. | :10:33. | ||
and unhealthy. Rachael has a job with a local charity where she | :10:33. | :10:36.
talks to schoolchildren about body image. Even if it is helping just | :10:36. | :10:42.
one person, then that is one more person that I will have helped. | :10:42. | :10:49.
all media images are digitally changed. But there have been high- | :10:49. | :10:52.
profile examples of some which were. Actress Kate Winslet allowed a | :10:52. | :10:54.
magazine to make her legs longer. Tonight, the Periodical Publishers | :10:54. | :10:56.
Association, a trade body representing many glossy magazine, | :10:56. | :11:06.
:11:06. | :11:07. | ||
declined to comment on Lynne's Tony joins us for the sport now. | :11:07. | :11:11.
Manchester United in action tonight, but off the field a fanzine being | :11:11. | :11:19.
sold outside the ground is causing controversy. The front cover of the | :11:19. | :11:22.
latest Red Issue has a picture of the Bolton player Fabrice Muamba | :11:22. | :11:25.
being treated on the pitch after his heart attack and there are | :11:25. | :11:29.
cartoon speech bubbles from the crowd mocking what the fanzine says | :11:29. | :11:36.
are fake sentiments from what they Essentially they're having a dig at | :11:36. | :11:39.
the public response to Muamba's condition which they say was like a | :11:39. | :11:45.
"circus". They say that credit should go to the paramedics on the | :11:45. | :11:49.
pitch and the authorities. Some fans have taken umbrage, to be | :11:49. | :11:58.
honest. Not their player, not their team, nothing to do with them. On | :11:58. | :12:02.
the field though, United have a real chance of making headway in | :12:02. | :12:05.
the title race tonight. Yes, three points will separate the two | :12:05. | :12:07.
Manchester clubs at the top of the Premier League if United manage to | :12:08. | :12:17.
:12:18. | :12:20. | ||
beat Fulham at Old Trafford this this weekend with a 1-1 draw at | :12:20. | :12:21.
Stoke - Peter Crouch's unstoppable volley for the Potters cancelled | :12:21. | :12:28.
out by a long-range deflected effort from Yaya Toure. That draw | :12:28. | :12:32.
was more good news for Sir Alex, who says that his side are in the | :12:32. | :12:35.
right place at the right time, having been behind City in the | :12:35. | :12:45.
league for most of the season. We've mentioned him already but | :12:45. | :12:47.
more savoury news now about Bolton's Fabrice Muamba. He's | :12:47. | :12:50.
continuing to make "encouraging progress" in his recovery from that | :12:50. | :12:52.
cardiac arrest. He's still in intensive care but he's started to | :12:52. | :12:55.
eat again and even watched highlights of his team mates | :12:55. | :12:58.
beating Blackburn on Match of the Day. That result lifted Wanderers | :12:58. | :13:00.
out of the bottom three in what is an increasingly tight relegation | :13:00. | :13:04.
scrap. Not least because of Wigan's first-ever win at Anfield. Here's | :13:04. | :13:13.
Richard Askam. The question of which sit of players would cope | :13:13. | :13:17.
better in a emotional encounter at the Reebok Stadium was quickly | :13:17. | :13:24.
answered. Both sets of fans played their part, but it was own goal's | :13:24. | :13:34.
:13:34. | :13:35. | ||
Bolton who had the spring in their step. David Wheater with both goals. | :13:35. | :13:42.
There was more emotion with more fans leaving messages of support | :13:42. | :13:49.
for Fabrice Muamba. Many Bolton fans left with renewed hope that | :13:49. | :13:54.
their team can avoid relegation. The victory today puts us back and | :13:54. | :13:59.
the mix, doesn't it? Both sets of fans would have been hoping that | :13:59. | :14:05.
Liverpool could see off Wigan Athletic at Anfield, but Roberto | :14:05. | :14:09.
Martinez's side came away with the result of the weekend, 2-1 victory | :14:09. | :14:14.
that lifted spirits for Wigan Athletic that they could defy the | :14:14. | :14:21.
odds and stay up. We have had few opportunities of the season to | :14:21. | :14:29.
celebrate, and now our fans have got something to celebrate. | :14:29. | :14:34.
Liverpool have won just two of the last 11 games in the league, and | :14:34. | :14:38.
just five out of 15 at Anfield this season. Lots of mixed emotions | :14:38. | :14:42.
between fans at the moment. Some of them calling for the head of Kenny | :14:42. | :14:49.
Dalglish. It can only get better. I think it will improve. Wigan will | :14:49. | :14:53.
hope that Gary Caldwell's winning goal proves to be a pivotal moment | :14:53. | :15:00.
as they tried to avoid the drop. I don't think top and bottom has ever | :15:00. | :15:08.
been as exciting for this region. Now a reminder for later, I'm back | :15:08. | :15:10.
with Late Kick Off tonight. Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston | :15:10. | :15:13.
talks agents and the controversial 11 million payment to his dad's | :15:13. | :15:15.
company from the Seasiders' Premier League income. Macclesfield's Brian | :15:15. | :15:19.
Horton joins us in the studio. All our clubs feature along with Neil | :15:19. | :15:21.
Eardley and Brett Ormerod, auditioning unsuccessfully for | :15:21. | :15:31.
:15:31. | :15:44. | ||
Countdown. What is 72 divided by two? Haven't a clue. Erm... Lets | :15:44. | :15:47.
hope they can at least tell the time! That's Late Kick Off, BBC 1, | :15:47. | :15:53.
11.35pm tonight. Rugby League now. Warrington are on top of Super | :15:53. | :15:56.
League after Friday's 22-20 win at Wigan. This breakaway Lee Briers | :15:56. | :15:59.
try and two late penalties sealing the win for the Wolves. St Helens' | :15:59. | :16:02.
temporary coaching staff got off to a winning start against Leeds | :16:02. | :16:04.
yesterday. Jonny Lomax scoring 22 points in their 46-6 victory. | :16:04. | :16:09.
Salford are up to seventh after winning 38-18 away to Bradford. | :16:09. | :16:12.
Joel Moon scoring two of their seven tries. And Widnes picked up | :16:12. | :16:22.
their second win of the season, beating London Broncos 38-30. And | :16:22. | :16:25.
you can see all the tries from those matches on tonight's Super | :16:25. | :16:32.
League Show tonight at five past midnight. Bobby Union, and Sale | :16:32. | :16:38.
Sharks are looking for a new head coach after dismissing Tony Haynes, | :16:38. | :16:43.
after a 4-5-9 defeat to Saracens. The chief executive of the club has | :16:43. | :16:50.
promised changes. I felt sorry for them. The players have been keen to | :16:50. | :16:55.
get involved and they are setting themselves up. We believe them when | :16:55. | :17:04.
they say they know their general knowledge. Have a look at them | :17:04. | :17:12.
tonight. Across Greater Manchester, there are places which provide a | :17:12. | :17:15.
function which is far greater than the bricks which make up the | :17:15. | :17:19.
building itself. Community centres provide a focal point for many | :17:19. | :17:22.
people, and nowhere more so than in Hattersley. And people from the | :17:22. | :17:25.
town have been telling their stories in a new BBC film called | :17:25. | :17:32.
"Songs from Hattersley". Five slices of life from the Tameside | :17:32. | :17:35.

They make this place work. screening of the musical in the | :22:11. | :22:16.

everything, and that was difficult, but there is worse things happening | :22:30. | :22:39.
:22:40. | :22:42. | ||
than that in other people's lives. I thought it was absolutely | :22:42. | :22:52.
:22:52. | :22:55. | ||
brilliant. It made me cry. It was so true-to-life. And it is lovely. | :22:55. | :23:02.
Shuffling on words... The five films will be shown every night | :23:02. | :23:12.
:23:12. | :23:13. | ||
this week. Pubs with beer gardens have been overwhelmed. Lightweight | :23:13. | :23:16.
clothes have come out of storage and charcoal suddenly appeared on | :23:16. | :23:19.
supermarket shelves. Yes, it may be only March, but it feels like | :23:19. | :23:24.
summer. And why not? With temperatures hitting 20 Celsius for | :23:24. | :23:30.
many of us. In a moment, Dianne will be here with the forecast but | :23:30. | :23:33.
in the meantime, let's just enjoy the sunshine. Here's Colin Sykes. | :23:33. | :23:39.
As the clocks went forward, so did the pictures. Ride Hidden | :23:39. | :23:44.
Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester, it is 19 Celsius, double the normal | :23:44. | :23:48.
temperature for March. Sunnier than San Francisco. The only place to be | :23:48. | :23:56.
seems to be outdoors. Temperatures over the weekend have been similar | :23:56. | :23:59.
to Madrid, bringing life to our open spaces and putting a smile on | :23:59. | :24:03.
people's faces. Essentials - a cold drink, a good spot in the sun and a | :24:03. | :24:05.
camera. Taking the kids out, because it is warm. I am happy as | :24:05. | :24:10.
you can tell from my facial expression. Everybody likes the | :24:10. | :24:20.

# Here comes summer... # Gonna grab my girl and run away. The good news | :24:39. | :24:43.
is that the hot weather seems set to stay, but the question is, just | :24:43. | :24:53.
:24:53. | :24:55. | ||
for her long? It is a scorcher. He should have taken off his jacket! | :24:55. | :25:01.
It is unbelievable. We're lucky to work in this location. It is | :25:01. | :25:05.
picture-perfect no matter what the weather is doing. It is a complete | :25:05. | :25:10.
wind tunnel, you're on the Manchester Ship Canal. It is flat | :25:10. | :25:16.
calm, even at this time of night. It is so warm out and about. The | :25:16. | :25:22.
only question people have for me at the moment is, will it continue? | :25:22. | :25:28.
High pressure is drifting ever-so- slightly but if you're looking for | :25:28. | :25:32.
rain, we will not see it from Monday through to Friday, not a | :25:32. | :25:37.
drop. It is not an ideal situation but let us enjoy the fine weather | :25:37. | :25:44.
while it is with us. As we progress through this week, whilst that fine | :25:44. | :25:48.
weather sticks around, the windows changing, so temperatures will fall, | :25:48. | :25:52.
so instead of being in the low twenties, it will cool down to the | :25:52. | :26:02.
:26:02. | :26:07. | ||
mid- teens. Let's look at the top . Overnight tonight there will be a | :26:07. | :26:15.
touch of frost and rural areas. The important thing is for most of was, | :26:15. | :26:21.
it is a dry night per night, cloudless skies, pounds and cities, | :26:21. | :26:28.
between 5 and 6, and seven Celsius along the coast. It will not last | :26:28. | :26:31.
tomorrow morning very long, that Frost and that morning temperature | :26:31. | :26:39.
should be back up into double figures, wherever Iraq. Get -- | :26:39. | :26:43.
wherever you are. Winds are light, coming from the south, less than 10 | :26:43. | :26:51.
miles an hour for most of us. The course will be as warm as anywhere | :26:51. | :26:59.
else -- the coast. The outlook for the next couple of days, yes, the | :26:59. | :27:05.
fine weather stays, but temperatures will fall a little bit. | :27:05. | :27:10.
We will start to drag in a little bit of cloud as we head through to | :27:10. | :27:14.
Friday, but let's just enjoy it while it lasts, but, as you know, | :27:14. | :27:22.
nothing lasts for ever. It looks great. Only last month, I was | :27:22. | :27:27.
sledging in the Lake District, there was snow on the ground. I was | :27:27. | :27:33. |
