Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Ranvir Singh and Roger | :00:03. | :00:07.
Johnson. Our top story. The doctor accused of lying over a baby's | :00:07. | :00:10.
death - Calum's family tell a hearing he didn't bother to examine | :00:10. | :00:17.
their son. A disciplinary panel is told Dr Nair should be struck off. | :00:17. | :00:27.
Also in the programme: we are top of the lead! Blue moon rising. City | :00:27. | :00:30.
celebrate as United are left red faced in the mega Manchester derby. | :00:30. | :00:32.
Causing ripples around Windermere - the multi-million pound convention | :00:32. | :00:42.
:00:42. | :00:43. | ||
centre planned for the Lake District. Major problem? Not for | :00:43. | :00:50.
these majorettes. A local company says they can keep marching. And | :00:50. | :00:55.
Help! We need somebody - the budding Beatles hoping to hit the | :00:55. | :01:05.
:01:05. | :01:11. | ||
A Preston family say they had no choice but to make a secret | :01:11. | :01:14.
recording of a meeting with their former GP, claiming he lied to an | :01:14. | :01:23.
inquest over their baby's death. Calum Smith died from a heart | :01:23. | :01:27.
condition at 18 days old. Dr Renjith Nair faces being struck off | :01:27. | :01:34.
for failing to assess him properly and then lying over his treatment. | :01:35. | :01:38.
He is expected to give evidence over the next fortnight. Our Health | :01:38. | :01:41.
Correspondent Nina Warhurst has the story. The parents who claim their | :01:41. | :01:44.
GP failed not only to properly assess their poorly boy but then | :01:44. | :01:47.
later misled an inquest after Calum died of myocarditis - an | :01:47. | :01:51.
inflammation of the heart muscle. Calum Smith lived for fewer than 3 | :01:51. | :01:55.
weeks - he'd been in and out of Preston Royal Hospital - before his | :01:55. | :01:58.
Mum took him to his local clinic in Ashton on Ribble where she saw Dr | :01:58. | :02:01.
Renjith Nair. Today she told the panel of experts, "I was worried | :02:01. | :02:04.
because his symptoms had changed. He was cold and sweaty and hadn't | :02:04. | :02:08.
eaten for 15 hours." When asked how Dr Nair responded she said, "he | :02:08. | :02:12.
didn't even get off his chair. Calum wasn't even touched. I knew | :02:12. | :02:16.
he wasn't right. But I allowed Dr Nair to reassure me, because I | :02:16. | :02:18.
wanted to believe a doctor." What happened here at the Docklands | :02:18. | :02:21.
surgery will come under close expert scrutiny - not only because | :02:21. | :02:24.
Calum died soon after being sent home from here but because his | :02:24. | :02:28.
parents say the version of events given by Dr Nair at the inquest was | :02:28. | :02:33.
dishonest. So convinced were they that he had lied that they secretly | :02:33. | :02:36.
tape recorded a later meeting with Dr Nair which will be considered | :02:36. | :02:45.
later at the enquiry. The the panel will hear from a second family who | :02:45. | :02:48.
allege Dr Renjith Nair fell to make the correct assessments, referrals | :02:48. | :02:55.
and medical notes. The hearing will conclude in two weeks' time. | :02:55. | :02:57.
Thousands of people have joined a class law action against Merseyside | :02:57. | :03:03.
factory Sonae. The Health and Safety Executive is already | :03:03. | :03:06.
investigating the chipboard plant in Kirkby over the deaths of three | :03:06. | :03:10.
people and a serious fire there last June. Solicitors say they | :03:10. | :03:13.
believe people could have suffered a whole range of respiratory | :03:13. | :03:19.
problems because of fires and fumes from the factory. Sonae says the | :03:19. | :03:23.
claims have no substantial supporting evidence. Laura Yates | :03:23. | :03:33.
reports. After its height, 45 firefighters tried to put up the | :03:33. | :03:41.
blaze. It burnt the days. An example of a difficult history at | :03:41. | :03:46.
Sonae. People like Jane Dalton who live half a mile away, she tells me | :03:46. | :03:49.
there is always dust and she believes it could be why her 11- | :03:50. | :03:55.
year-old son had such bad asthma. When he is running about, he cannot | :03:55. | :04:01.
read very well. He has to run in for an inhaler. It is not very safe | :04:01. | :04:08.
to play out with that stuff. There have been 21 major incidents at | :04:08. | :04:15.
Sonae. The company has already been prosecuted four times and the | :04:15. | :04:17.
Health and Safety Executive is investigating three more incidents. | :04:17. | :04:21.
The deaths of Thomas Elmore and James Bibby he would drive into | :04:21. | :04:26.
machinery, a serious fire and a death of a contract there and they | :04:26. | :04:31.
face legal action from thousands of residents. We have had roads and | :04:32. | :04:35.
communities approaching this. This solicitor is representing local | :04:35. | :04:45.
people. Respiratory problems, soreness of the skin and the ayes, | :04:45. | :04:50.
watering of the eyes, nose bleeds, we are making investigations. We | :04:50. | :04:55.
are trying to link different things to different things. Sonae said it | :04:55. | :04:59.
is being dealt with by the insurance company and solicitors | :04:59. | :05:04.
and would defend themselves against the claims made without any | :05:04. | :05:11.
substantial supporting evidence. All forty riders who took part in | :05:11. | :05:13.
this year's Grand National have been criticised by the British | :05:13. | :05:16.
Racing Authority. The authority has written to them expressing its | :05:16. | :05:21.
disappointment at their conduct at the start of the big race. There | :05:21. | :05:25.
were two false starts at Aintree. The BRA also said it couldn't have | :05:25. | :05:32.
foreseen or prevented the deaths of two horses. Peel Energy has lodged | :05:32. | :05:35.
an appeal against a council decision to reject plans for a | :05:35. | :05:41.
renewable energy plant close to the Trafford Centre. If it gets the go- | :05:41. | :05:43.
ahead, the biomass incinerator in Davyhulme will create electricity | :05:43. | :05:46.
for up to 37,000 homes. Opponents say it could affect the health of | :05:46. | :05:52.
local people. Children who attend faith schools will no longer | :05:52. | :05:56.
receive free transport in parts of Cheshire. To save one and a half | :05:56. | :05:59.
million pounds, Cheshire East Council is stopping home to school | :05:59. | :06:04.
transport and halving the travel subsidy for over 16s. Pupils with | :06:04. | :06:07.
special needs who use a taxi will be re-assessed to find out whether | :06:07. | :06:17.
:06:17. | :06:20. | ||
they could use a cheaper mode of transport. The Bolton player will | :06:20. | :06:23.
be at the Reebok Stadium to watch his team play Tottenham tomorrow. | :06:23. | :06:28.
He collapsed on a pitch against spares during an FA Cup tie and | :06:28. | :06:34.
doctors described his recovery as a miracle. A The jury has retired to | :06:34. | :06:37.
consider its verdicts in the trial of eleven men accused of sexually | :06:37. | :06:40.
abusing and trafficking schoolgirls. The men deny all the charges | :06:40. | :06:43.
against them. A little earlier I spoke to Our Chief Reporter Dave | :06:43. | :06:51.
Guest who was outside Liverpool Crown Court. It is a lengthy and | :06:51. | :06:57.
complicated. The case is in its 10th week, not surprising when it | :06:57. | :07:02.
there were 11 defendants facing more than 20 between them, ranging | :07:02. | :07:07.
between conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child, rape | :07:07. | :07:14.
and trafficking. The prosecution's case is these men aged between 22 | :07:14. | :07:18.
and 59 groomed five girls aged between 13 and 15 and gave them | :07:19. | :07:23.
free drinks and food and cigarettes in return for sex. The men deny the | :07:23. | :07:30.
charges against them, lawyers say they were -- there were | :07:30. | :07:34.
inconsistencies from the girls and the stories are not true. The case | :07:34. | :07:40.
has attracted widespread attention. Yes, it has had high-profile | :07:40. | :07:46.
security, early today there was a large police presence and there has | :07:46. | :07:50.
been in during the trial because it has attracted attention from the | :07:50. | :07:55.
public and media but also far right groups who have latched onto the | :07:55. | :08:02.
fact the defendants in the case are Asian and the girls are white. | :08:02. | :08:05.
11:35am at the jury said it was time to retire to consider the | :08:05. | :08:15.
:08:15. | :08:18. | ||
verdict. The verdicts are now in the hands of the jury. The still to | :08:18. | :08:24.
come. A Jordon-Lee on Windermere where there are plans for a | :08:24. | :08:30.
conference centre behind me. -- join me on Windermere. And getting | :08:30. | :08:33.
the locals in a spin, the majorettes hitting the wrong notes | :08:33. | :08:43.
:08:43. | :08:45. | ||
with the neighbours. You got home for the big match. And I listened | :08:45. | :08:49.
to the first half on the radio. On our journeys home, the roads were | :08:49. | :08:54.
empty! You do get that with an England game but it was incredible. | :08:54. | :08:59.
We were travelling out of the north-west. Everywhere was quiet. | :08:59. | :09:03.
It is no surprise, it was billed as the biggest game in Premier League | :09:03. | :09:11.
history. Today, after his team's 1- 0 win took them top, Manchester | :09:11. | :09:14.
City's manager is refusing to accept that his side are favourites | :09:14. | :09:17.
for the title. Roberto Mancini says it changes nothing but some City | :09:17. | :09:20.
fans left feeling that the name on the trophy is about to. United will | :09:20. | :09:23.
hope there's another twist still to come after last night's huge derby. | :09:23. | :09:32.
Richard Askam was there for us. Ecstasy for Manchester's blues | :09:32. | :09:42.
after a night of tension. For fans players and the managers. Won by a | :09:42. | :09:50.
single goal that took the roof off the Etihad Stadium. It is the | :09:50. | :09:56.
captain's goal! We are going to win the Premiership. Believe it! | :09:56. | :10:05.
have seen history here. It was the sweetest thing. Manchester City no | :10:05. | :10:10.
it isn't there's quite yet. Their team is in pole position with a | :10:10. | :10:15.
real belief the long wait for the title could soon be over. Billed as | :10:15. | :10:17.
the biggest Manchester derby ever it was certainly out of the | :10:17. | :10:20.
ordinary. City striker Sergio Aguerro's father in-law made an | :10:20. | :10:24.
appearance. He just happens to be a certain Diego Maradonna. So too pop | :10:24. | :10:27.
star Liam Gallagher in the stand and then more surprisingly in the | :10:27. | :10:33.
post match press conference. Where despite watching his side driven on | :10:33. | :10:36.
the by the outstanding Yaya Toure, City's manager refused to accept | :10:36. | :10:46.
:10:46. | :10:46. | ||
that they are now in the driving seat. We are happy, we are happy. | :10:46. | :10:55.
Big changes nothing. We were up against it. Supporters were hoping | :10:55. | :11:02.
they slip up in the last two matches. Never say never. I hope | :11:02. | :11:10.
Newcastle play well. I think city have won it now. A difficult game | :11:10. | :11:17.
against Newcastle. I do not think it will be a straightforward. | :11:17. | :11:20.
City keep their nerve united know it will probably mean they lose | :11:20. | :11:30.
their title. The it was all drama. One man got his money's worth. | :11:30. | :11:40.
:11:40. | :11:43. | ||
travelled from Los Angeles first class. It was a fantastic night. Is | :11:43. | :11:48.
it cities to lose, it is not over yet? But I have to say after the | :11:48. | :11:52.
final whistle last night at the Etihad Stadium, they were | :11:52. | :11:58.
celebrating as if they had won. It is not over. Let's look at how it | :11:58. | :12:04.
has changed. This was the table before kick-off. City are top on | :12:04. | :12:09.
goal difference. A goal difference of eight. With two games to play, | :12:09. | :12:15.
equal points, City in charge but we have seen United come back so many | :12:15. | :12:19.
times from seemingly impossible situations. And it comes down to | :12:19. | :12:24.
the final two games. The fixtures are key and City have do -- have a | :12:24. | :12:31.
tricky one. Yes, it could come down to this Sunday, away at Newcastle. | :12:31. | :12:36.
Newcastle got a battering at Wigan. And Wigan were overshadowed on | :12:36. | :12:41.
Monday. Overall, Newcastle have had a great season chasing a Champions | :12:41. | :12:46.
League place. United host Swansea on the same day and the last game | :12:46. | :12:50.
of the season, City host keepy are fighting relegation. United are | :12:51. | :12:58.
away at Sunderland. Perhaps another twist. It is all on City's game by | :12:58. | :13:07.
the looks of it. Feel sorry for Swansea. If it gets approval, it'll | :13:07. | :13:10.
be the most striking building the Lake District has seen in years. | :13:10. | :13:13.
But a proposed four million pound glass and steel conference centre | :13:13. | :13:16.
on the shores of Windermere has divided opinion. Some say it's just | :13:16. | :13:19.
too modern for the tranquillity of the lake. Business leaders say it's | :13:19. | :13:21.
just what the area needs. Our Environment Correspondent Colin | :13:21. | :13:28.
Sykes reports. It is one of the best-known views in the Lake | :13:28. | :13:33.
District, winded me with Langdales in the background. This would be | :13:33. | :13:36.
the view from the proposed convention centre at the water | :13:36. | :13:41.
sports centre which would be locked -- knocked down. This area has no | :13:41. | :13:47.
building like that. We are hoping that these large one-off events, it | :13:47. | :13:53.
will put it on the map. The design is based on Morecambe's 1930s | :13:53. | :13:58.
Midland Hotel which the group owns. The centre will be behind me why | :13:58. | :14:03.
you can see the trees, the boats were a big feature and still are | :14:03. | :14:09.
but the speed limit has changed life on Windermere. Watersports are | :14:09. | :14:13.
still popular on Windermere but the speed ban has left businesses | :14:13. | :14:17.
looking for other openings. It is the building's design which is | :14:17. | :14:23.
polarising opinion. You should be able to see the lake. We need | :14:23. | :14:28.
something modern otherwise you don't keep up with the times. | :14:28. | :14:33.
scenery should be left as it is. Local environment groups say it | :14:33. | :14:38.
should not be built. This is the Lake District, visitors come up for | :14:38. | :14:44.
the magnificent lakes and beautiful fells and woodland. It is really | :14:44. | :14:48.
important we protect that asset. decision will be made tomorrow by | :14:48. | :14:56.
the planning board. And there'll be more on that on BBC Radio Cumbria's | :14:56. | :15:05.
breakfast show after eight o'clock tomorrow morning. Some of you have | :15:05. | :15:12.
been in touch about the sea Odyssey programme. It was broadcast last | :15:12. | :15:18.
night on BBC One, it was changed last week. Liverpool's a titanic | :15:18. | :15:26.
girl is available on the BBC On Thursday people across the | :15:26. | :15:29.
region can vote in the local elections. And the most high | :15:29. | :15:32.
profile vote will be for the new mayor of Liverpool - the man chosen | :15:32. | :15:37.
to run the city council. Well there's no doubt that the biggest | :15:37. | :15:41.
issue in the campaign has been jobs and the local economy. Our | :15:41. | :15:43.
political editor Arif Ansari has been finding out what the | :15:43. | :15:51.
candidates are offering. The new mayor of Liverpool is supposed to | :15:51. | :15:57.
raise the city's profile. The town hall has attracted some big | :15:57. | :16:04.
international visitors. The Giants came from Nantes in France. Nantes | :16:04. | :16:10.
is an old port city. But we have a future. It is not finished. The | :16:10. | :16:14.
history is not finished, it's a new beginning. Joe Anderson, the | :16:14. | :16:19.
current leader, says his record is one of economic regeneration. | :16:19. | :16:25.
here, we're talking about bringing cruise liners back again to help | :16:25. | :16:30.
business and create jobs. In a way, you have done what you could as | :16:30. | :16:34.
council leader, can you do more? can speak on behalf of the city | :16:34. | :16:39.
with a mandate and we can guarantee things will get done faster and | :16:39. | :16:44.
quicker. But could include the multi-million pound redevelopment | :16:44. | :16:48.
of the waterfront led by the property company Peel Holdings but | :16:48. | :16:55.
not everyone is so keen. Unlike Anderson, I do not believe World | :16:55. | :16:59.
Heritage status is a plaque on the wall. High-value tourists come | :16:59. | :17:04.
because they have been two other sites. We have a blueprint, some | :17:04. | :17:08.
think extremely sketchy and I did think we could be bending over | :17:08. | :17:13.
backwards every time Peel Holdings, a private company, ask us to do | :17:13. | :17:21.
something. Peel Holdings is trying to attracts Chinese investment. | :17:21. | :17:25.
would increase trade through the ports and South America, the | :17:26. | :17:30.
Commonwealth countries and China. We are twinned with Shanghai and | :17:30. | :17:34.
need more trade. Next time you buy something, look inside the jacket | :17:34. | :17:39.
and trousers and see where it is manufactured. If it is not in | :17:39. | :17:42.
Britain and you buy it, looking should be doing to the downfall of | :17:42. | :17:47.
the economy. We need to be more adventurous using links through | :17:47. | :17:54.
colleges and universities and some communities in the city. We need to | :17:54. | :18:00.
look outwards, not inwards. One of the candidates is doing both. Tony | :18:00. | :18:05.
has his own factory on Merseyside and another in China. I have been | :18:05. | :18:09.
creating jobs for 20 years, my business started on a market stall | :18:09. | :18:15.
and that created hundreds of jobs in Liverpool and Merseyside. All of | :18:15. | :18:18.
the candidates have debated the issues offering voters a range of | :18:19. | :18:23.
policies. The council's priorities must be focused on frontline | :18:23. | :18:30.
services, the elderly, children and the sick. Not on PCTs projects | :18:30. | :18:39.
pandering to minorities. We must clean up the air to make small | :18:39. | :18:44.
businesses want to locate and thrive. We have been heartened to | :18:44. | :18:50.
come across many young people in their mid-twenties he had started | :18:50. | :18:55.
businesses in this harsh climate. I pledge to help them. The inner city | :18:55. | :19:01.
has big problems. More than one in five of people are not working, | :19:01. | :19:04.
twice the average -- national average. The sun, it is a modern | :19:04. | :19:08.
tale of two cities. I would commence a campaign to oppose | :19:08. | :19:15.
further cuts and to draw money back into the city which has been cut | :19:15. | :19:21.
from Liverpool's budget by this government. Joe Anderson is | :19:21. | :19:25.
implementing it without any challenge. It is a reminder that | :19:25. | :19:28.
whoever becomes the city's first elected mayor would have a great | :19:28. | :19:36.
deal to do. We did invite the National Front candidate to take | :19:36. | :19:39.
part but he refused to be interviewed. And there's a full | :19:39. | :19:42.
list of all the candidates standing for Mayor of Liverpool on the | :19:42. | :19:43.
website, that's www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool. And voting | :19:43. | :19:51.
takes place on Thursday. They've been entertaining Wirral for around | :19:51. | :19:54.
20 years but Radio Merseyside listeners will have heard this | :19:54. | :19:57.
morning that a Rockferry majorette club was facing eviction from its | :19:57. | :20:01.
home for making too much noise. The Bethany Starlights troupe practices | :20:01. | :20:04.
in a church hall on Old Chester Road but some neighbours said they | :20:04. | :20:10.
were causing a disturbance. Well in the last couple of hours there's | :20:10. | :20:19.
been some developments and Kate Simms is with the troupe now. What | :20:19. | :20:24.
has happened? These are the Bethany Starlights majorettes. They are a | :20:24. | :20:31.
bit noisy, usually they are nausea. They usually have it a lot louder, | :20:31. | :20:36.
the music. It has caused problems for the people in the flats. They | :20:36. | :20:40.
complained to the council, the council agreed yes, the noise was | :20:40. | :20:48.
causing noise pollution. The future looked bleak. We were told by the | :20:48. | :20:54.
council to soundproof the windows. We could not afford to pay for that. | :20:55. | :21:00.
It is so expensive to do it. There was no arouse to go. There is no | :21:00. | :21:05.
way to go. We needed to sort the wind is up. So you faced eviction | :21:05. | :21:11.
until these guys stepped in. were impressed with the work they | :21:11. | :21:17.
do here. We were only too happy to come and help out. What have you | :21:17. | :21:23.
done? We have measured up for acoustic glass and we will put new | :21:23. | :21:29.
double-glazed units in. That will solve the problem. So, the dancing | :21:29. | :21:35.
can continue. No one is more delighted than The Gulls. You must | :21:35. | :21:43.
be delighted. I am really made up. We are really happy. We can keep | :21:43. | :21:47.
training. The girls have been saying this place is more than just | :21:47. | :21:54.
a hall. Tell me why this place is so important. It is called Bethany | :21:54. | :21:59.
Starlights after a girl the died four years ago. So, it would be | :21:59. | :22:05.
like leaving memories of her. it holds a lot of memories. To lose | :22:05. | :22:12.
the hall, we would be losing part of her. Now, they get to stay. That | :22:12. | :22:16.
is one hurdle overcome. They have to win back their championship at | :22:16. | :22:26.
pontoons this season. Let's look at the rehearsal. They are brave to do | :22:26. | :22:36.
:22:36. | :22:37. | ||
it on camera and live. A happy ending. Hard to believe, but this | :22:37. | :22:40.
year's the fiftieth anniversary of the Beatles' first hit single. But | :22:40. | :22:43.
there's no sign of Beatlemania wearing off. Later this year, a new | :22:43. | :22:46.
tribute to the group opens in London. And today, the producers | :22:46. | :22:50.
were in Liverpool trying to find a new Fab Four. Stuart Flinders was | :22:50. | :22:59.
Alex wants to be Paul. Sean would like to be Lennon. The auditions | :22:59. | :23:08.
are about to begin. The show is called Let It Be. It opens in | :23:08. | :23:12.
London in September, 50 years after the Beatles' first hit single, Love | :23:12. | :23:22.
:23:22. | :23:29. | ||
Me do. Downstairs they're warming up. You can't be shy, this is an | :23:29. | :23:39.
:23:39. | :23:40. | ||
audition! Argue too old to play a Beatle? They are older than me. | :23:40. | :23:43.
They are now! For some it's a family affair. Sean's one of the | :23:43. | :23:47.
first in. Next up is Alex. Will he have what the producers are looking | :23:47. | :23:57.
:23:57. | :24:00. | ||
for? # Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. # The producers | :24:00. | :24:05.
want guys who can hit every nuance and play in the right to eat and | :24:05. | :24:10.
have the feel and essence of John Lennon or Paul McCartney. How did | :24:10. | :24:18.
he go? It was all right. It seems to go well. You do three songs. | :24:18. | :24:22.
it was all right. It is hard to tell with auditions. Alex has been | :24:22. | :24:25.
asked to London for a second audition. Maybe it's one Beatle | :24:25. | :24:35.
:24:35. | :24:37. | ||
It could be live changing. It is hard to follow in their footsteps. | :24:37. | :24:44.
Let's look at the weather. Are you sure you want to?! Today did not | :24:44. | :24:49.
sure you want to?! Today did not seem too bad but this week it will | :24:49. | :24:53.
turn colder. As you head through Friday, temperatures start to fall | :24:53. | :24:59.
away. Today, this weather front has moved north, a ragged affair. | :24:59. | :25:03.
Tomorrow, it moves south. The weather tomorrow will not be | :25:03. | :25:08.
different from today. There was patchy rain around. We anticipated | :25:08. | :25:13.
more, it was a slightly better day than we thought. The temperatures | :25:13. | :25:18.
for this time of year have not been wonderful under the cloud cover. | :25:18. | :25:22.
The temperatures have struggled between 11 and 13. This evening, | :25:22. | :25:32.
there is still showery stuff around. Most of us hang onto cloud cover. | :25:32. | :25:37.
The cloud cover keeps temperatures up, as does the wind. It has been | :25:37. | :25:43.
gusty all day. Temperatures in rural areas are four or five. In | :25:43. | :25:50.
towns and cities, six or seven. We start the day with a line of rain | :25:50. | :25:57.
working salver as the date is on. Most of us we Cup with cloud cover. | :25:57. | :26:01.
It will look better than a today, the wind is slightly lighter so it | :26:02. | :26:06.
will feel better. Do not expect anything radically difficult -- | :26:06. | :26:13. |
