arrives on Friday. Can't wait! That's all from

:00:00.:00:00.

Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson ` and

:00:00.:00:09.

Annabel Tiffin. Our top story: Operators of a coach which crashed

:00:10.:00:12.

killing three people have today lost their licence, the second time in

:00:13.:00:16.

ten years. The company's been criticised by one of the victim s

:00:17.:00:18.

mothers. Also tonight: Seven day service `

:00:19.:00:22.

the GPs offering us better care and saving millions of pounds in the

:00:23.:00:27.

process. Lessons in togetherness ` the pupils

:00:28.:00:30.

back under one roof after fire wrecked their school. I can equate

:00:31.:00:41.

it to when the children come home for Christmas. They are all in the

:00:42.:00:48.

right place. The unsung hero award goes to Maggie and Joe Forber. The

:00:49.:00:52.

humble heroes on a night of stars. Winning ways for a Cheshire couple

:00:53.:00:55.

at the glitzy Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

:00:56.:00:58.

And magic moments ` the help and kindness of our latest Christmas

:00:59.:00:59.

star. The operator of a coach which

:01:00.:01:16.

crashed on the way back from a music festival last year killing three

:01:17.:01:20.

people today lost its license. MerseyPride Travel was prosecuted

:01:21.:01:23.

back in August after a court heard a tyre which was nearly 20`years`old

:01:24.:01:30.

had blown out. But today it emerged the company had lost its license

:01:31.:01:33.

before after safety concerns This was a journey home from a music

:01:34.:01:38.

festival which ended in tragedy This was a journey home from a music

:01:39.:01:41.

festival which ended in tragedy The driver Colin Daulby and passengers

:01:42.:01:44.

Kerry Ogden and Michael Malloy didn't make it back to Merseyside

:01:45.:01:48.

after a crashed caused by the blow out of a 19`year`old tyre. Today at

:01:49.:01:51.

a public inquiry friends and family of those killed came to hear whether

:01:52.:01:55.

MerseyPride Travel would be able to operate again. They also heard that

:01:56.:01:59.

the company had a questionable record. In 2003 MerseyPride Travel

:02:00.:02:02.

had its license revoked because of unsatisfactory maintenance of

:02:03.:02:07.

vehicles. Over a five year period checks on the companies vehicles

:02:08.:02:10.

lead to notices being issued in 71% of inspections for inadequate

:02:11.:02:14.

maintenance. This is compared to the national average of 19%. Today

:02:15.:02:18.

Merseypride Travel had its licenses was revoked. I would like to see

:02:19.:02:45.

MerseyPride Travel and other unscrupulous companies taken off the

:02:46.:02:48.

road. The company did not attend the public hearing. In August

:02:49.:02:51.

Merseypride was fined ?4000. The tyre which casued the crash was old

:02:52.:02:59.

but not illegal. To lose a child over a tie that was illegal, it is

:03:00.:03:06.

excruciating. It is outrageous that that is still allowed to go on.

:03:07.:03:12.

After three deaths, we still have laws in this country that allowed

:03:13.:03:17.

tires of any age to be transporting hundreds of thousands of people

:03:18.:03:20.

every year. The families of those who died say they will continue to

:03:21.:03:24.

fight for a change in the law. The Granada weather presenter Fred

:03:25.:03:26.

Talbot has been re`arrested over allegations of historical sex abuse

:03:27.:03:29.

at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys during the 1970s and 80s. The

:03:30.:03:33.

arrests relate to five allegations of indecent assault on former pupils

:03:34.:03:37.

and one other allegation. No action has been taken in relation to the

:03:38.:03:41.

alleged offences for which he was originally arrested but he remains

:03:42.:03:44.

on police bail in relation to one indecency.

:03:45.:03:47.

The Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell says she's appalled she been

:03:48.:03:51.

named on a list of top ten laziest MPs. The list, published in The Sun

:03:52.:04:00.

Newspaper, was based on the 39`year olds voting record while she was on

:04:01.:04:03.

maternity leave. The paper has since issued an apology. The father of

:04:04.:04:15.

Gary and Phil Neville appeared before Bolton Crown Court today

:04:16.:04:20.

accused of sexually assaulting a 46`year`old woman in very early this

:04:21.:04:25.

year. He denies the charges. A man has been arrested on suspicion

:04:26.:04:29.

of murder after woman's body was found at a house in greater manager.

:04:30.:04:33.

Glennis Brierley was found outside Littleborough yesterday. . A

:04:34.:04:41.

45`year`old man, thought to be her son, is being held by police. Stuart

:04:42.:04:45.

Flinders is there for us now ` Stuart what more can you tell us?

:04:46.:04:53.

The call went into Greater Manchester Police on Saturday from a

:04:54.:04:57.

public call box and somebody saying that there had been a killing at

:04:58.:05:01.

this house behind me. A patrol were sent to investigate and the police

:05:02.:05:05.

found the body of a 64 year macro woman. She had been stabbed. ``

:05:06.:05:11.

64`year`old woman. They arrested a man on suspicion of murder and we

:05:12.:05:20.

believe him to be her son. What do we know about Glennis Brierley? She

:05:21.:05:27.

has been named by the police tonight. She was a well`known member

:05:28.:05:33.

of this community. It is a little hamlet above little brother. One man

:05:34.:05:37.

said he moved in here 30 years ago and has been firm friends with her

:05:38.:05:44.

ever since. She was a psychotherapist and on her website

:05:45.:05:52.

she describes her worst as being album many people with problems She

:05:53.:05:59.

had hobbies in drawing, painting and embroidery. I have spoken to a pub

:06:00.:06:04.

landlord and he was telling me she was a keen member of their weekly

:06:05.:06:09.

quiz and that tomorrow night, when they begin their regular quiz, they

:06:10.:06:14.

will start with two minutes silence in her memory. She will be very much

:06:15.:06:21.

missed in this area. BAE Systems in Cumbria has been

:06:22.:06:24.

awarded two new contracts totalling nearly ?80 million to build the next

:06:25.:06:27.

generation of nuclear deterrent submarines. The Barrow`based firm

:06:28.:06:30.

are to begin the ordering process to secure castings and forgings for the

:06:31.:06:36.

submarines. The new vessels are due to enter service by 2028.

:06:37.:06:39.

Anti`fracking campaigners used a giant wind turbine blade to blockade

:06:40.:06:41.

the entrance to an exploratory drilling site in Salford earlier

:06:42.:06:45.

today. Protestors at Barton Moss assembled the 17`metre blade in

:06:46.:06:51.

symbolic action early this morning. Police later moved it.

:06:52.:06:55.

Liverpool actor Ricky Tomlinson helped deliver a 100,000 signature

:06:56.:06:59.

petition to Downing Street today in an effort to quash the convictions

:07:00.:07:02.

of 24 picketers, accused of intimidating workers 40 years ago.

:07:03.:07:10.

The petition was handed over by the Royle Family actor and union

:07:11.:07:12.

leaders, who were also accused of violent picketing during the 19 2

:07:13.:07:21.

strike. How many times have you tried to see

:07:22.:07:26.

your GP to be told the soonest appointment is days or weeks away?

:07:27.:07:30.

Back in October the Prime Minister said he wanted doctors to keep their

:07:31.:07:33.

surgeries open seven days a week. Now a group of practices in Greater

:07:34.:07:37.

Manchester have started doing just that. They say it will improve care

:07:38.:07:40.

and could save millions of pounds in the long run. Our Health

:07:41.:07:43.

Correspondent Nina Warhurst has been at a busy surgery in Radcliffe.

:07:44.:07:53.

Sunday lunchtime and the family are squeezing an appointment into their

:07:54.:07:57.

hectic lifestyle. I have my business and family and can never get in in

:07:58.:08:05.

the week. It is really convenient here. This practice a few miles

:08:06.:08:11.

north of Manchester is one of six in the area staying open until 8pm in

:08:12.:08:16.

the week and until 6pm at weekends. This is about improving access for

:08:17.:08:20.

busy patients with busy lives but it is no secret that the NHS is under

:08:21.:08:25.

enormous financial pressure. This is also about saving money. How? It is

:08:26.:08:31.

thought across England more than ?200 million is spent every year on

:08:32.:08:35.

people turning up to A who don't need to be there. In greater

:08:36.:08:38.

Manchester, they think they can cut the number of those cases by 40 by

:08:39.:08:45.

offering better access to GPs. I was playing golf and I felt a pain in my

:08:46.:08:50.

leg. Howard had to come off the golf course after nine holes and his wife

:08:51.:08:53.

made him an appointment. If Christine had told you the surgery

:08:54.:08:57.

was opened today, what would you have done? We have come back from

:08:58.:09:01.

holiday and I was concerned it could be a thrombosis. I would have gone

:09:02.:09:08.

to A And you won't find many patients complaining about that

:09:09.:09:12.

access to care but what about the people providing it? This can't be

:09:13.:09:17.

much fun for you coming in on a Sunday. It is not the most ideal

:09:18.:09:21.

situation but we have to give the patient is better access, better

:09:22.:09:26.

continuity of care. We have to do it once in awhile. Not all GPs will be

:09:27.:09:31.

quite so keen but if the savings make sense it might be a pill they

:09:32.:09:37.

will all have to swallow. Dr Rob Barnett is a family doctor in

:09:38.:09:41.

Liverpool and he speaks for the British Medical Association. He

:09:42.:09:44.

joins us now live from our Merseyside studio. What do you think

:09:45.:09:52.

of this idea? It will be interesting to see how it works. It sounds a

:09:53.:09:56.

good idea but there are questions we still need to have answered. The

:09:57.:10:03.

fact is that there is a member of `` a number of doctors and if we have

:10:04.:10:09.

to have GPs working until 8pm in the evening and weekends, we will have

:10:10.:10:15.

to take them from somewhere. We may have to find more doctors. This is

:10:16.:10:22.

going to cost money. They think they will be `` there will be savings

:10:23.:10:25.

elsewhere in the NHS. A lot of patients who go to A do need to be

:10:26.:10:30.

there. While we may get some shift, I don't think it will release the

:10:31.:10:34.

savings that are being talked about. We also need to take into what

:10:35.:10:38.

account the fact that it is not just about GPs, it is about having nurses

:10:39.:10:41.

who are working these hours and practice staff. It will be

:10:42.:10:45.

interesting to see whether these pilots are properly evaluated to see

:10:46.:10:55.

what the costs are. We hear about A services being tied up when

:10:56.:10:57.

people should be going to their GP. It is not always convenient for

:10:58.:11:13.

people to go to their GP. I am not averse to seeing it up or providing

:11:14.:11:17.

that we probably evaluate the pilot systems. There is an issue whether

:11:18.:11:23.

we have got the workforce to be able to do what is being suggested in

:11:24.:11:28.

these pilots. In principle, you are saying GPs are happy to make it

:11:29.:11:34.

work? It is not a case of them being work`shy? Not wanting to work

:11:35.:11:40.

weekends. GPs have always tried to find ways of making things easier

:11:41.:11:44.

for patients but we have to accept the fact that there is a finite

:11:45.:11:49.

number of GPs and resources. If you take me away from seeing patients at

:11:50.:11:55.

9pm `` 9am on a Sunday morning to see patterns on a Sunday evening,

:11:56.:11:59.

patients that want to see me during the day on Monday will not be able

:12:00.:12:02.

to. We have to understand that and see how it is going to work. Lots of

:12:03.:12:12.

people have been in touch. We will read your comments out late in the

:12:13.:12:17.

programme. Still to come on North West Tonight: The play is starring

:12:18.:12:31.

in a weekend sports fest. Colleagues helping out in their hour of need. I

:12:32.:12:36.

didn't think I am anything special but people have made me feel special

:12:37.:12:41.

today. Now to a heart warming tale of

:12:42.:12:45.

Christmas reunion. Ever since a huge fire devastated their school this

:12:46.:12:48.

Summer, pupils at Leyland St Mary's Roman Catholic Technology College

:12:49.:12:51.

have been separated from each other. But not anymore. Years eight and

:12:52.:12:55.

nine have finally returned to the fire`damaged site so that all pupils

:12:56.:12:58.

are again under one roof. Peter Marshall reports.

:12:59.:13:03.

The halls and corridors are once more, just like any normal school.

:13:04.:13:05.

Hectic, lively, at times noisy. But this is not just a normal

:13:06.:13:20.

school. What you have achieved year eight and nine has been

:13:21.:13:24.

extraordinary. Extraordinary. Both Pupils and teachers `have endured a

:13:25.:13:28.

traumatic term. In September a devastating fire destroyed many of

:13:29.:13:33.

its buildings. The damage was immense. Since then, the school

:13:34.:13:36.

community has been split into separate schools. Until today. Now

:13:37.:13:45.

everyone is back under one roof I can equate it to a mother when the

:13:46.:13:50.

children come home for Christmas. They are all in the right place We

:13:51.:13:55.

are back together again. Years eight and nine are the last to return to

:13:56.:13:58.

Leyland from alternate premises in Preston. This is like our home and

:13:59.:14:07.

it is a lot better to be back here. It is a family reunion in a way It

:14:08.:14:17.

is nice that everyone is back here together and we are not having to go

:14:18.:14:22.

on a bus which was a bit annoying. You will really tired a threat.

:14:23.:14:25.

Temporary classrooms are being used. Parts of the school remain a

:14:26.:14:28.

building site. It's hoped building work on new permanent buildings will

:14:29.:14:30.

start next summer. Happy to be back at school! Well

:14:31.:14:42.

Richard is here now with Monday s sport and very differing fortunes

:14:43.:14:44.

for our Champions League representatives.

:14:45.:14:48.

Yes, the draw for the last 16 was made in Switzerland earlier today

:14:49.:14:51.

and makes great reading for Manchester United but has given

:14:52.:14:54.

neighbours City the toughest of tasks. United will take on Greek

:14:55.:14:56.

club Olympiakos while it's City`Barcelona in a tie that really

:14:57.:15:05.

is the talk of Europe already. It shows just how crucial it is to

:15:06.:15:09.

win your first round group in the Champions League That's right, group

:15:10.:15:12.

winners get a second place finisher in the last 16.

:15:13.:15:15.

United duly won their's, City would have had they scored one more goal

:15:16.:15:19.

away to Bayern Munich last week a goal which we now know would have

:15:20.:15:22.

meant they avoided the likes of Barcelona at this stage. The ties

:15:23.:15:26.

will be played next February and March.

:15:27.:15:33.

Sergio Aguero will miss out after a calf injury. The Northwest for top

:15:34.:15:40.

teams racked up a total of 18 goals. For United, there were plenty of

:15:41.:15:58.

positives. Danny Welbeck scored twice against Aston Villa. Perhaps

:15:59.:16:04.

best of all was the return fare action of Darren Fletcher. He was

:16:05.:16:10.

back in the United States `` shirt after bowel surgery.

:16:11.:16:16.

Four goals from Everton might have flattened the blues a little bit but

:16:17.:16:22.

it was another result that marks them out as a growing force in the

:16:23.:16:24.

battle for the top four. Five goals for Liverpool at White

:16:25.:16:39.

Hart Lane could have been seven or eight. A couple from Luis Suarez

:16:40.:16:45.

made it 17 for the season for him. In the absence of Steven Gerrard

:16:46.:16:48.

through injury, he captained the side. Jordan Henderson stepped up

:16:49.:16:56.

for a man of the match display. It is our place to come. We knew we

:16:57.:17:01.

wanted to be at our best to get a good results and we were fantastic

:17:02.:17:07.

today. Manchester City's home record is enough to strike fear into any

:17:08.:17:13.

defence. They conceded three against Arsenal but at the other end with

:17:14.:17:16.

they banged in half a dozen with the sort of attacking football that

:17:17.:17:22.

Manchester City getting used to It is 35 goals in eight Premier League

:17:23.:17:29.

matches. It doesn't matter how many we concede, we are going to score

:17:30.:17:33.

goals. Every team is fearful of that. I was stuck for words. First

:17:34.:17:42.

time ever. Is there any team to fear any more? Liverpool on Boxing Day

:17:43.:17:46.

will be the next side trying to crack the fortress that is the

:17:47.:17:58.

Etihad Stadium. Uwe Rosler's first League game in

:17:59.:18:01.

charge of Wigan Athletic ended in victory, but only after a topsy

:18:02.:18:05.

turvy derby at home to Bolton. The Latics went two up thanks to Ben

:18:06.:18:08.

Watson's penalty and then this spectacular effort from Manchester

:18:09.:18:10.

United loanee Nick Powell. Wanderers fought back and equalised through a

:18:11.:18:15.

spot kick of their own and this goal from Neil Danns. But Wigan were back

:18:16.:18:18.

in for good shortly afterwards when Callum McManaman stroked home.

:18:19.:18:20.

Oldham Athletic winger Cristian Montano has been sacked by the club

:18:21.:18:23.

following his arrest in a spot`fixing investigation. The

:18:24.:18:26.

22`year`old was one of six players arrested and bailed as part of an

:18:27.:18:29.

inquiry by the National Crime Agency. The player had been

:18:30.:18:32.

suspended without pay since the allegations were made last week

:18:33.:18:36.

Something for Rugby League fans here on BBC One tonight. There's a

:18:37.:18:39.

special edition of The Super League Show looking back at the season and

:18:40.:18:42.

at the issues affecting our clubs over the close season. You'll hear

:18:43.:18:46.

from Salford owner Marwan Koukash and Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane

:18:47.:18:50.

among others. That's the Super League Show, tonight at 11.20 on BBC

:18:51.:18:52.

One. Last night was a poignant one for

:18:53.:19:02.

the region. The main TV event last night was the BBC's Sports

:19:03.:19:05.

Personality of the Year awards. As well as that recognition for

:19:06.:19:07.

Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams, there was more north west

:19:08.:19:10.

involvement with mention of Trophy Town Wigan and a special award for

:19:11.:19:14.

Sir Alex Ferguson to mark the show's 60th anniversary. The honour was

:19:15.:19:18.

accepted by her husband and children. She spent years calling

:19:19.:19:32.

for the accidental death verdict for the Hillsborough victims to be

:19:33.:19:40.

overturned. It was a big night for the

:19:41.:19:45.

Northwest. Alex Ferguson got the Diamond award for his achievements.

:19:46.:19:49.

One of the best awards went to a couple from Wilmslow. Earlier I went

:19:50.:20:01.

to meet them. I asked them how they felt when they got the award. They

:20:02.:20:06.

are incredible, the Unsung Hero award goes to Maggie and Joe Forber.

:20:07.:20:21.

They were so lovely and had such a nice time. It was completely

:20:22.:20:27.

overwhelming because we have spent the day with all the other winners

:20:28.:20:31.

from all the other regions and there were so many wonderful people there

:20:32.:20:41.

dealing with disabled children, people playing rugby with down

:20:42.:20:47.

syndrome children. When the basketball came on the screen, my

:20:48.:20:53.

heart and my stomach was churning. It was overwhelming. It must feel

:20:54.:20:59.

like you are rewarded every day through the work that you do. We

:21:00.:21:04.

deal with children and we have always dealt with children. We have

:21:05.:21:07.

been schoolteachers most of our lives and it is an extension of this

:21:08.:21:14.

school teaching. We help the kids to grow up in many ways, not just

:21:15.:21:19.

basketball, in other schools as well. That is why we do it because

:21:20.:21:26.

we get a lot of satisfaction from that. Have you had much reaction

:21:27.:21:30.

from friends and relatives and people you have helped? When we got

:21:31.:21:40.

back home, 100 e`mails, another 50 this afternoon. We have had text

:21:41.:21:45.

messages from all over the world. People that have been with us for

:21:46.:21:51.

many, many years and have appreciated everything that Joe has

:21:52.:22:01.

done for them. Basketball and other things. Joe, you are not going to

:22:02.:22:06.

Leicester on your laurels? I think while we have got our health, we

:22:07.:22:11.

will carry on. We may just come away a little bit but we have no

:22:12.:22:16.

intention of retiring completely. I am not sure what we would do if we

:22:17.:22:20.

did retire. I don't fancy sitting on this couch all day long watching TV.

:22:21.:22:25.

We will carry on. Congratulations to both of you.

:22:26.:22:32.

This is the season of goodwill and every day in the run`up to Christmas

:22:33.:22:37.

we've been highlighting viewers whose extraordinary spirit of

:22:38.:22:40.

kindness and generosity sets them apart.

:22:41.:22:44.

Today we meet a member of staff from a school in Prescot who's helped two

:22:45.:22:47.

colleagues cope with the grief of losing their mum. Lindsey Prosser

:22:48.:22:51.

reports. We wanted you to have this. I don't

:22:52.:23:16.

think I am anything special but people have made me feel special

:23:17.:23:21.

today. They nominated their colleagues are supporting them

:23:22.:23:26.

during a very difficult time. And fortunately we lost our mum this

:23:27.:23:32.

year and it was the worst time of our life. At points we thought we

:23:33.:23:35.

couldn't get through. It was people like gene that helped us to see that

:23:36.:23:46.

we can carry on. She is a true person and is just lovely. This

:23:47.:23:54.

sister says she is the backbone of the school. Can I say I come to work

:23:55.:24:06.

because I love all of you. You are always kind to me. Thanks to

:24:07.:24:17.

everyone and you make me feel about 20!

:24:18.:24:25.

Well done. Now for the weather. We have had two weeks of settled

:24:26.:24:30.

weather with lots of cloud. The week ahead is going to be different. This

:24:31.:24:36.

is what tomorrow looks like. This is what Wednesday could look like. It

:24:37.:24:39.

is going to turn wet and very windy on Thursday `` Wednesday and we

:24:40.:24:47.

could see severe gales at times Tonight, it is a quiet night. There

:24:48.:24:53.

are occasional showers but you are in for a dry night. It is going to

:24:54.:24:58.

be a chilly night with some frost. Temperatures will fall as low as low

:24:59.:25:06.

as three Celsius in rural areas Tomorrow, it is going to be colder

:25:07.:25:10.

and the temperatures will struggle after the overnight dip. We start of

:25:11.:25:16.

dry and bright. Plenty of sunshine in the forecast through the

:25:17.:25:20.

afternoon and light winds. Maybe some fog patches beginning to form

:25:21.:25:22.

by late afternoon. The temperatures, for Celsius at best in

:25:23.:25:29.

one or two spots. Very cold indeed but I is of eight Celsius. Into

:25:30.:25:35.

Wednesday, here comes the rain. Some heavy rain coming in from the

:25:36.:25:40.

Atlantic. Very windy all so late on Wednesday into Thursday. Thursday

:25:41.:25:45.

looks mostly dry but Wednesday is not looking good. We could see winds

:25:46.:25:51.

of up to 70 or 80 mph in one or two spots. The only plus about Wednesday

:25:52.:25:57.

is the temperatures. We could see ten or 11 Celsius. As the cold front

:25:58.:26:01.

appears on Thursday, it is dry but colder. You've heard the saying

:26:02.:26:05.

coals to Newcastle. How about baubles to Bethlehem? It's

:26:06.:26:09.

a similar thing. Tomorrow night we join the Liverpool firm who've been

:26:10.:26:12.

asked to decorate and light the Christmas Tree in the town where the

:26:13.:26:17.

Christmas story began. So from tomorrow we hit the road, all the

:26:18.:26:20.

way to Palestine, with the boys taking the baubles to Bethlehem An

:26:21.:26:26.

adventure that has it all. Scousers. Falafels. The Israeli Security

:26:27.:26:30.

Service. And a dinner date with the Palestinian Prime Minister.

:26:31.:26:37.

You can't ask for more. Earlier we asked for your

:26:38.:26:45.

experiences of booking an appointment at the doctors ` after

:26:46.:26:49.

the decision to open six in Manchester until 8pm seven`days a

:26:50.:26:52.

week. Liz Baxter posted on our Facebook page. This has been coming.

:26:53.:26:56.

A doctor will expect to shop and do other things at the weekend ` why

:26:57.:26:59.

shouldn't we have access to the NHS at weekends.

:27:00.:27:02.

SA on Twitter posted ` My husband is a GP. My kids don't get to see him

:27:03.:27:06.

now. If the surgery is open until 8pm, he won't be home until after

:27:07.:27:10.

9pm ` there goes whatever little family life we have!

:27:11.:27:15.

While Bernadette Phillips e`mailed to say ` If GPs were available even

:27:16.:27:19.

one day at the weekend it would make a huge difference. They could still

:27:20.:27:23.

have the other day free ` and those who can't come Monday to Friday

:27:24.:27:26.

would have an alternative. It's better than using locums or A

:27:27.:27:35.

Thank you for your comments. We are back tomorrow and on Thursday we are

:27:36.:27:40.

going behind the scenes on the programme. Goodbye.
