Good evening.

0:00:130:00:14

More than ?185,000 has been raised for the children of a couple

0:00:140:00:17

from Wirral who had cancer and died within days of each other.

0:00:170:00:20

The family of Julie and Mike Bennet shared a picture on social media

0:00:200:00:24

of the couple in their last moments at St John's Hospice.

0:00:240:00:26

Their dying wish was that their three children should

0:00:260:00:29

continue their education.

0:00:290:00:30

The poignant photograph that they posted and that was shared

0:00:300:00:33

around the world has helped make sure that will happen,

0:00:330:00:35

as Andy Gill explains.

0:00:350:00:37

Mike and Julie Bennet with their children Luke,

0:00:370:00:39

who's 21, 18-year-old Hannah and Oliver, who's 13.

0:00:390:00:41

Three children who lost both parents within a week.

0:00:410:00:47

They're coming to terms.

0:00:470:00:49

It's Monday morning and they are facing the reality

0:00:490:00:52

of what has to be done and they are in doing mode,

0:00:520:00:55

so they are getting all the affairs in order and they are making

0:00:550:00:58

their plans for mum and dad to say their farewells.

0:00:580:01:01

Mike Bennet had been diagnosed with cancer three years ago.

0:01:010:01:04

His wife's diagnosis came last May.

0:01:040:01:06

Their children shared a photograph of their parents'

0:01:060:01:09

last moment together at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral.

0:01:090:01:13

When the couple were admitted earlier this month, staff

0:01:130:01:15

realised both were nearing the end of their lives,

0:01:150:01:19

so arranged for them to be put in a side room together.

0:01:190:01:23

I am really proud of the staff on the ward realising

0:01:230:01:26

they needed to do something and quite quickly.

0:01:260:01:28

They took their own initiative, they made those plans themselves,

0:01:280:01:31

they knew I'd agree with that, we do everything we can to make

0:01:310:01:34

the best care for our patients but also in this case

0:01:340:01:37

for the three children.

0:01:370:01:38

Shortly after the photo was taken, Mr and Mrs Bennet were moved

0:01:380:01:40

to a local hospice.

0:01:400:01:41

He died a week ago.

0:01:410:01:43

Mrs Bennet died on Saturday.

0:01:430:01:44

The hospice says it's unusual to have two members of the same

0:01:440:01:48

family pass away within such a short space of time, but all patients

0:01:480:01:51

are offered the same level of care.

0:01:510:01:55

For certain families it might be

0:01:550:01:57

things to do with the environment that really matter to them,

0:01:570:02:00

so replicating a home environment for them,

0:02:000:02:04

music that might be really important to them, photos on the walls,

0:02:040:02:07

looking after patients' spirituality and so what keeps them going,

0:02:070:02:11

what's important to them as a person.

0:02:110:02:15

The couple's final wish was for their children to stay

0:02:150:02:17

together at their home in Irby and complete their education.

0:02:170:02:21

People have donated to an online fundraising page

0:02:210:02:24

to allow them to do that.

0:02:240:02:26

Well-wishers have raised more than three times

0:02:260:02:28

the original target.

0:02:280:02:30

Andy Gill, BBC North West Tonight, Wirral.

0:02:300:02:36

Manchester gangster Stephen Akinyemi died

0:02:360:02:38

after he was shot through the head.

0:02:380:02:40

The man who did it Arran Coghlan said he acted in self defence

0:02:400:02:43

after Akinyemi attacked him in his Cheshire home.

0:02:430:02:48

Today, a second inquest opened into the killing

0:02:480:02:50

after Mr Coghlan said he was unhappy with the original

0:02:500:02:52

inquest's open verdict.

0:02:520:02:53

Dave Guest reports.

0:02:530:02:56

Violence was part and parcel Stephen Akinyemi's life

0:02:560:02:59

and he met a violent death.

0:02:590:03:01

He was shot and killed during a fight at this luxury home

0:03:010:03:03

in Alderley Edge in January 2010.

0:03:030:03:05

Arran Coghlan lived there.

0:03:050:03:07

He has always insisted Akinyemi was trying to kill him and says

0:03:070:03:11

he acted in self defence.

0:03:120:03:13

Mr Coghlan was initially charged with the murder

0:03:130:03:16

but the charge was later dropped.

0:03:160:03:18

He's no stranger to court proceedings.

0:03:180:03:20

He's twice faced courts accused of murder.

0:03:200:03:23

In 1996 he was cleared of shooting dead Chris Little and seven years

0:03:230:03:27

later was cleared of murdering drug dealer David Barnshaw.

0:03:270:03:31

In 2011, in an inquest into the death of Stephen Akinyemi,

0:03:310:03:35

a coroner recorded an open verdict and expressed doubts

0:03:350:03:39

over Arran Coghlan's account of what happened.

0:03:390:03:41

Mr Coghlan was not happy.

0:03:410:03:43

He launched a legal fight to get a new inquest.

0:03:430:03:46

He says the police could have arrested Mr Akinyemi before he went

0:03:460:03:50

to his home on that fateful night because they had evidence he'd

0:03:500:03:53

committed a violent rape.

0:03:530:03:54

Mr Coghlan says they chose not to, even though they knew

0:03:540:03:58

there was potential for trouble between the two men.

0:03:580:04:01

Arran Coghlan has now got that new inquest.

0:04:010:04:05

He arrived in London this morning for the start of what's likely

0:04:050:04:07

to be a two week hearing.

0:04:080:04:09

Here we are, seven years down the line, two judicial reviews

0:04:090:04:13

I have had to fight, we are on our third coroner,

0:04:130:04:16

the's see if we can get some truth.

0:04:160:04:26

-- let's see if we can get some truth.

0:04:260:04:28

The coroner, Bernard Richmond QC, has said that he will consider

0:04:280:04:31

whether the police had any prior knowledge or suspicion that events

0:04:310:04:34

were going to unfold in the way that they did.

0:04:340:04:36

This afternoon, he heard from Stephen Akinyemi's brother, John.

0:04:360:04:38

He said his brother routinely wore body armour because he'd

0:04:380:04:41

been shot in the past.

0:04:410:04:42

But he said he did not know whether his brother

0:04:420:04:44

could easily access weapons or whether he carried

0:04:440:04:46

them routinely.

0:04:460:04:47

could easily access weapons or whether he carried

0:04:470:04:49

them routinely.

0:04:490:04:50

When asked directly whether his brother was a member

0:04:500:04:52

of a gang in Cheetham Hill, he said simply, "he lived

0:04:520:04:55

in Cheetham Hill."

0:04:550:04:56

Dave Guest, BBC North West Tonight, London.

0:04:560:04:58

A police investigation is underway after a suspected arson attack

0:04:580:05:00

destroyed a Grade Two listed church in Salford.

0:05:000:05:03

The Church of the Ascension had just undergone a refurbishment costing

0:05:030:05:06

?250,000 before fire broke out late yesterday evening,

0:05:060:05:11

devastating the building.

0:05:110:05:12

Parts of the church will now have to be demolished.

0:05:120:05:15

Police have released CCTV footage showing a man leaving the scene

0:05:150:05:17

around the time the fire broke out and are appealing for information.

0:05:170:05:24

So many people's lives are enmeshed in the story of this Church

0:05:240:05:30

Church of the Ascension, where they have been

0:05:300:05:32

christened, where they have

0:05:320:05:34

been married and where funerals have taken place and it has served this

0:05:340:05:37

community for nearly 150 years and to lose it in this way

0:05:370:05:40

is tragic beyond words.

0:05:400:05:46

Meanwhile, officers investigating a fatal house fire

0:05:460:05:48

in Withington have found there were no suspicious

0:05:480:05:52

circumstances.

0:05:520:05:53

Police were called to the house on Parsonage road in the early

0:05:530:05:56

hours of Friday morning.

0:05:560:05:57

A man and woman, Mohammed and Hasma Awad, sadly died at the scene.

0:05:570:06:00

Their children, three girls and a boy all aged under 17,

0:06:000:06:02

and a man, remain in hospital in a stable condition.

0:06:020:06:08

Overuse of one of our most common medicines is killing thousands

0:06:080:06:11

of people in the country every year.

0:06:110:06:14

That's the warning from doctors as a new campaign is

0:06:140:06:16

launched about antibiotics.

0:06:160:06:18

And more of them are prescribed here than anywhere else.

0:06:180:06:22

It's claimed around 5,000 people die each year in England

0:06:220:06:25

because antibiotics no longer work for some infections.

0:06:250:06:29

Earlier, I talked to Dr Rob Barnett, who represents Liverpool GPs,

0:06:290:06:32

and asked him what are the dangers of taking antibiotics

0:06:320:06:35

when you don't need them?

0:06:350:06:38

People use antibiotics for coughs and colds,

0:06:380:06:40

which are basically viral infections when they're not needed.

0:06:400:06:45

We are going to end up with resistance to antibiotics

0:06:450:06:47

and as you have already reported, we are seeing more and more strains

0:06:470:06:50

of infection, bacteria, that don't respond to antibiotics

0:06:500:06:53

and that is going to cause us problems in the years to come.

0:06:530:06:56

So is it too much to say that it is killing people,

0:06:560:07:01

this resistance to antibiotics?

0:07:010:07:04

Well, the report seems to suggest that we are now seeing something

0:07:040:07:08

in the region of about 5,000 deaths a year from antibiotic resistance

0:07:080:07:15

and what we really need to do is try and make sure that people

0:07:150:07:25

and what we really need to do is try and make sure that people only take

0:07:260:07:30

them when it is appropriate and they are the for

0:07:300:07:32

the length of time they have been described and doses

0:07:320:07:35

they have been prescribed.

0:07:350:07:36

We are seeing too many patients who take antibiotics

0:07:360:07:38

for only two or three days.

0:07:380:07:39

They feel better, stop taking antibiotics and that is

0:07:390:07:41

when the bacteria will end up developing a resistance

0:07:410:07:44

to antibiotics, so when they are needed they won't work.

0:07:440:07:46

This new campaign is saying, you know, don't use them

0:07:460:07:48

when you should not use them, but presumably they are being

0:07:480:07:51

prescribed antibiotics, so do some doctors need to be

0:07:510:07:53

educated about when to prescribe them as well?

0:07:530:07:55

I think it is partly about reminding doctors when and when they should

0:07:550:07:58

not prescribe antibiotics but it is also about

0:07:580:08:00

people's expectations.

0:08:000:08:02

A lot of people come to see their doctor expecting

0:08:020:08:05

antibiotics and get quite upset if they are not prescribed.

0:08:050:08:08

They actually think they are being done out of medication that would do

0:08:080:08:12

them some good and the campaign is about reminding people that

0:08:120:08:15

for simple viruses, for coughs, colds, flu like symptoms,

0:08:150:08:17

antibiotics have no part to play, they just do not work.

0:08:170:08:27

An announcement is expected tomorrow on the future of a planned nuclear

0:08:270:08:30

power plant next to the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.

0:08:300:08:34

The Financial Times reports that Toshiba will explain how much money

0:08:340:08:37

it is likely to loseon its US nuclear business and the future

0:08:370:08:42

it is likely to lose on its US nuclear business and the future

0:08:420:08:45

of its overseas investments.

0:08:450:08:46

It could lead to the company withdrawing from the

0:08:460:08:48

partnership behind Moorside.

0:08:480:08:49

A passenger ferry which collided with a pier in strong

0:08:490:08:52

winds on the Isle of Man has resumed service.

0:08:520:08:54

The Ben MyChree crashed as it came into Douglas Harbour

0:08:540:08:57

yesterday evening.

0:08:570:08:58

It escaped with minor damage and will sail

0:08:580:09:00

to to Heysham at 8.30am.

0:09:000:09:10

-- and set sail at 8.30pm.

0:09:110:09:13

In the harbour there was a very strong, prolonged burst of wind

0:09:130:09:16

which was way in excess of what was forecast.

0:09:160:09:18

There is superficial damage to the vessel.

0:09:180:09:20

The railings along deck five, which is the upper car deck,

0:09:200:09:22

were damaged and also fire main bursts, which I think is the sort

0:09:220:09:25

of spectacular plume of water that everybody is talking

0:09:250:09:28

about on the video that was posted.

0:09:280:09:29

Manchester City are up to second in the Premier League after a 2-0

0:09:290:09:32

win at Bournemouth tonight.

0:09:320:09:33

Raheem Sterling put City ahead just before the half hour mark,

0:09:330:09:36

then turned provider for substitute Sergio Aguero, whose touch

0:09:360:09:38

was deflected into his own net by Bournemouth defender Tyrone

0:09:380:09:41

Tyrone Mings.

0:09:410:09:47

That's all the news and sport, but a reminder the Super League Show

0:09:470:09:50

is tonight at 11.30pm.

0:09:500:09:51

That's it from me now here's Dianne with the weather.

0:09:510:09:54

Good evening to you.

0:09:540:09:55

Well, it was a bitterly cold, raw day-to-day but there

0:09:550:10:00

Well, it was a bitterly cold, raw day today but there

0:10:000:10:03

was plenty of sunshine around.

0:10:030:10:04

Our weather Watchers pictures really do show the region at its best.

0:10:040:10:07

Tonnes of blue sky.

0:10:070:10:08

We do see some changes as we head through the next couple of days.

0:10:080:10:11

The wind is changing direction pretty much every single day.

0:10:110:10:14

It allows much, much milder conditions to come in but I think

0:10:140:10:17

from time to time we will see quite a bit of cloud cover.

0:10:170:10:20

And that's the story right now.

0:10:200:10:21

It is a bit of a 50-50 split.

0:10:210:10:23

If you have got clear skies, you will hang onto them for a short

0:10:230:10:26

while, but the clouds rolls in rolls out.

0:10:260:10:28

Over the highest level routes we could see a little bit of mist,

0:10:280:10:31

potentially a little bit of fog.

0:10:320:10:33

But the success story tonight, temperatures.

0:10:330:10:34

Two and three Celsius rather than anything to much lower

0:10:340:10:37

than that I think rurally maybe down to a one or a zero here or there.

0:10:370:10:41

Tomorrow morning, some sunshine to start the day.

0:10:410:10:43

I don't think it is going to last but here and there

0:10:430:10:45

you will see some blue sky.

0:10:450:10:47

Not the blue sky that we saw today, you won't see anywhere near as much,

0:10:470:10:50

but is still not a bad picture.

0:10:500:10:52

However, going through the afternoon, the cloud will build

0:10:520:10:54

and towards the tail end of the day one of two places will

0:10:540:10:57

will see some light rain.

0:10:570:10:59

The temperature is getting better, seven and a Celsius.
