The family of a man killed because of health

:00:13.:00:18.

and safety failures at work say the prison sentences given

:00:19.:00:20.

Benjamin Edge from Bury died after falling from a shed

:00:21.:00:25.

The company then tried to cover it up, as our Social Affairs

:00:26.:00:29.

When Ben Edge died it was needless and avoidable.

:00:30.:00:39.

Not an accident but the result of a total disregard of

:00:40.:00:42.

Leaving a two-year-old without her father and a family

:00:43.:00:45.

Bem was the most fun loving and hard working man.

:00:46.:00:56.

The sentence given for those responsible for Ben's death

:00:57.:01:02.

and there abhorrent actions is nothing compared to

:01:03.:01:11.

the life sentence my family and I got on the 10th of September 2014.

:01:12.:01:15.

That was the day when he went to work and did not return

:01:16.:01:18.

He fell from the roof of a shed whilst working at a site near

:01:19.:01:26.

Arriving at the court hearing this morning, the Brothers

:01:27.:01:33.

Christopher and Robert Brown were jailed for 20 months

:01:34.:01:35.

after they admitted safety failings and perverting the course

:01:36.:01:37.

This man, the boss of the company which

:01:38.:01:45.

contracted out the work was sentenced to a year in prison.

:01:46.:01:52.

Handing down the sentences, the judge went through the list of

:01:53.:01:59.

safety failings that led to the death of Ben Edge.

:02:00.:02:01.

Not only was there a failure to keep him safe, it

:02:02.:02:04.

was the attempt to cover up what happened.

:02:05.:02:06.

Another worker was told to go and get harnesses so they look

:02:07.:02:09.

like safety equipment was there and he had

:02:10.:02:11.

Anything to say about what happened that day?

:02:12.:02:14.

He too was on the roof from which his colleague fell.

:02:15.:02:18.

He tried to help by giving first aid but then

:02:19.:02:20.

followed orders designed to shift the blame.

:02:21.:02:22.

Why was it that you covered up what happened, Mr Heap?

:02:23.:02:24.

Among those in court today for the sentencing,

:02:25.:02:26.

some who grew up with the friend they will not grow old

:02:27.:02:29.

There are still two years gone and it is hard.

:02:30.:02:34.

His parents told me the regard what happened

:02:35.:02:36.

and the attempt to cover it

:02:37.:02:37.

They will have the rest of their lives with their

:02:38.:02:42.

They are probabaly still in their early 30s.

:02:43.:02:45.

Ten months, that is all our Ben's life was

:02:46.:02:48.

As in, they will only serve ten months?

:02:49.:02:51.

Yes, ten months is nothing, is it, for what they've

:02:52.:02:56.

They say they will never forgive but they

:02:57.:02:59.

Hilda Parker is an expert on health and safety at work.

:03:00.:03:07.

Earlier, I asked her how many people die every year -

:03:08.:03:10.

through failings in this and other welfare issues.

:03:11.:03:14.

It is many more than most people think.

:03:15.:03:20.

About 144 deaths are reported to the HSC and that will

:03:21.:03:23.

In addition to that, there are workers

:03:24.:03:26.

who are killed when they are driving on the roads,

:03:27.:03:30.

which are not reported in their figures.

:03:31.:03:34.

If you add all the members of the public who are killed by

:03:35.:03:39.

work-related activities and about 300 people a year who kill

:03:40.:03:42.

themselves because they are so stressed by work, that comes to

:03:43.:03:45.

Is the notion of health and safety gone mad completely

:03:46.:03:49.

There is not too much health and safety, there is too little.

:03:50.:03:58.

What advice would you give to somebody who goes to work

:03:59.:04:02.

and goes to work every day, went to work this morning and does not

:04:03.:04:05.

It is really important that people do not do things

:04:06.:04:08.

that they do not think are safe, that they report them.

:04:09.:04:11.

We all have the right to refuse work that

:04:12.:04:13.

It is not easy and it may mean you will risk

:04:14.:04:20.

You could try and reported it to the HSC or to the local

:04:21.:04:25.

authority but that is difficult.

:04:26.:04:27.

You have to weigh it up if you really feel unsafe, you

:04:28.:04:29.

really need to protect your life over keeping your job.

:04:30.:04:54.

They said it considered the evidence in detail before deciding to

:04:55.:05:02.

prosecute but the RMT union says the case should never have gone to

:05:03.:05:08.

trial. The transport police have got serious questions to answer. We will

:05:09.:05:11.

be taking those matters up with those bodies in due course. This

:05:12.:05:16.

case is one that should never have been in court.

:05:17.:05:27.

Firefighters say they've managed to save parts of a historic

:05:28.:05:29.

Grade Two listed building in Lancashire -

:05:30.:05:31.

75 firefighters tackled the blaze at Alston Hall

:05:32.:05:34.

Crews have spent the day trying to make some parts

:05:35.:05:38.

of the building safe - so investigators can go in.

:05:39.:05:41.

Greater Manchester Police has sent a file about the Conservatives'

:05:42.:05:43.

spending during the last General Election to the Crown

:05:44.:05:45.

One of those investigated, Bury North MP David Nuttall,

:05:46.:05:48.

says Tory Central Office told candidates spending on the party's

:05:49.:05:51.

battle bus was part of national - not local campaign expenditure.

:05:52.:05:54.

The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was campaigning in Lancashire today -

:05:55.:05:57.

ahead of the County Council elections in May.

:05:58.:05:59.

Labour has four more councillors than the Conservatives at the moment

:06:00.:06:01.

but both believe they can win an outright majority -

:06:02.:06:04.

Here's our Political Editor Nina Warhurst.

:06:05.:06:12.

He chose to come to Lancashire because there is a county council

:06:13.:06:16.

election coming, but possibly didn't choose the venue.

:06:17.:06:26.

Jeremy Corbyn thinks Lancashire leader

:06:27.:06:28.

has handled council cuts well, well enough to put the party in the frame

:06:29.:06:31.

Labour has stood up for the people of Lancashire,

:06:32.:06:37.

an innovative council suffering the most terrible cuts from

:06:38.:06:42.

a Tory Government underfunding people in desperate need.

:06:43.:06:48.

The latest poll suggests a 19 point lead for

:06:49.:06:51.

Some people suggest the only way that Labour can secure places like

:06:52.:06:56.

here in Lancashire is under a new leader.

:06:57.:06:58.

I am leading the party because I was elected to lead the

:06:59.:07:01.

I am determined that we will take the challenge to the Tories on

:07:02.:07:10.

Familiar battle cries from Jeremy Corbyn

:07:11.:07:13.

but the red Rose county is on

:07:14.:07:15.

Conservatives say this is their chance to turn it blue.

:07:16.:07:19.

Because people recognise this Administration has left the council

:07:20.:07:22.

in a mess, financially and in terms of the services they provide.

:07:23.:07:25.

We recognise there needs to be a change

:07:26.:07:27.

and they recognise we are the ones to be able to do it and put things

:07:28.:07:38.

right and hopefully they will vote for us on May 4th.

:07:39.:07:58.

away from the Conservatives in 2013, but four years earlier it was Labour

:07:59.:08:01.

There are significant numbers of swing

:08:02.:08:15.

voters here and across the country, and traditional party loyalties are

:08:16.:08:18.

Whatever happens here in Lancashire, will be watched closely from

:08:19.:08:22.

Lancashire reflects the national picture.

:08:23.:08:24.

The problem for Labour in recent years has been to inspire the

:08:25.:08:28.

voters enough to come out and actually show their support

:08:29.:08:31.

Mr Corbyn's job is to reach those parts that are clearly

:08:32.:08:35.

Jeremy Corbyn will say there is nothing outrageous for his ambitions

:08:36.:08:39.

In seven weeks, the voters will decide.

:08:40.:08:42.

Football and Manchester United are through to the quarter-finals

:08:43.:08:44.

But they made heavy weather of beating Russian side

:08:45.:08:47.

Juan Mata got the only goal at Old Trafford tonight -

:08:48.:08:51.

as United go through 2-1 on aggregate.

:08:52.:08:53.

Bryn the rescue dog was awarded a special medal today -

:08:54.:09:09.

in honour of years of dedicated service.

:09:10.:09:11.

The 13-year-old Cheshire Fire and Rescue dog has risked his own

:09:12.:09:13.

life to save others in disasters across the world -

:09:14.:09:15.

from the earthquake in Nepal to the Japanese Tsunami.

:09:16.:09:21.

Today he received the Order of Merit from the animal charity the PDSA.

:09:22.:09:24.

He's now retired after eleven years service.

:09:25.:09:30.

We wish him well. Now for the weather. I think there is rain on

:09:31.:09:40.

the way. There is a small chance you could have frost tonight over the

:09:41.:09:42.

highest ground. Very short lived. highest ground. Very short lived.

:09:43.:09:46.

The day started off well enough but it is all about the rain. You have

:09:47.:09:51.

had some over the last couple of hours. Rain tomorrow and outbreaks

:09:52.:09:55.

of rain on Saturday and the same on Sunday. It will not pour down all

:09:56.:09:59.

the way through, despite what the picture looks like. There's going to

:10:00.:10:08.

be some wet stuff around. Over the last couple of hours, those showers

:10:09.:10:10.

have left us. Can you see the map darkening? That is where you can see

:10:11.:10:14.

your frost. The crowd starts to push in and one or two outbreaks of

:10:15.:10:20.

showery rain they are. -- cloud. We talk about six Celsius. Into

:10:21.:10:27.

tomorrow, not a great picture. The best of the sunshine will be around

:10:28.:10:31.

in the morning into parts of the Wirral and Cheshire again. You comes

:10:32.:10:35.

the rain from ten o'clock on words. The windows gusty as well. Wet and

:10:36.:10:41.

windy is the short story. Overly high ground, outbreaks are heavily

:10:42.:10:45.

from time to time and if you have been watching the timeline, staying

:10:46.:10:52.

all the way through daylight hours. If anything, it gets cooler. Very

:10:53.:10:58.

cheerily tonight but tomorrow the best temperature is eight Celsius.

:10:59.:11:00.

-- chilly. The outlet, wet at times. there will be rain around, most

:11:01.:11:02.

occurring overnight. Good evening, quite a range of

:11:03.:11:11.

whether an offer earlier today in the north and north-west of the UK

:11:12.:11:15.

quite a lot of showers around, lively ones, little bit of sunshine

:11:16.:11:18.

in between. The best of the sunshine to be found at the other end of the

:11:19.:11:21.

country towards the south-east in Kent, lovely picture here from one

:11:22.:11:26.

of our weather watchers. A range of temperatures, too. 17 degrees for a

:11:27.:11:30.

few, on the other side of the weather front, only seven or 8

:11:31.:11:33.

degrees. Showers in the north and west. The fresh air will win out

:11:34.:11:38.

over tonight coming in behind the cold front, which

:11:39.:11:40.
